The latest user agents for Safari

Apple's Safari web browser runs on mobile devices (iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches) and macOS computers. Depending on which platform you're using (or want to pretend you're using!) the user agent will be a bit different.

Here we have the latest user agents for Safari on mobile and computer platforms.

Unlike some other popular browsers and platforms, we've noticed that Safari definitely seems to have less "extra" stuff in its user agent - standard Safari will never announce the exact model number of the device being used, and there's generally much less additional fragments added by installed addons/apps - toolbars and so on.

You may have already noticed, but Safari on the latest version of iOS (version 13) no longer includes fragments to indicate that Safari's running on iOS... instead the user agent is indistinguishable from the desktop version of macOS.

As such, it's not possible to provide valid sample user agents for them any more.

Browser detection using the user agent

Serving different Web pages or services to different browsers is usually a bad idea. The Web is meant to be accessible to everyone, regardless of which browser or device they're using. There are ways to develop your website to progressively enhance itself based on the availability of features rather than by targeting specific browsers.

But browsers and standards are not perfect, and there are still some edge cases where detecting the browser is needed. Using the user agent to detect the browser looks simple, but doing it well is, in fact, a very hard problem. This document will guide you in doing this as correctly as possible.

Note: It's worth re-iterating: it's very rarely a good idea to use user agent sniffing. You can almost always find a better, more broadly compatible way to solve your problem!

Considerations before using browser detection

When considering using the user agent string to detect which browser is being used, your first step is to try to avoid it if possible. Start by trying to identify why you want to do it.

Look, or ask, in specialized forums: you're unlikely to be the first to hit this problem. Also, experts, or people with another point of view, can give you ideas for working around the bug. If the problem seems uncommon, it's worth checking if this bug has been reported to the browser vendor via their bug tracking system ( Mozilla ; WebKit ; Blink ; Opera ). Browser makers do pay attention to bug reports, and the analysis may hint about other workarounds for the bug.

Your site needs to use a specific Web feature that some browsers don't yet support, and you want to send those users to an older website with fewer features but that you know will work. This is the worst reason to use user agent detection because odds are eventually all the other browsers will catch up. In addition, it is not practical to test every one of the less popular browsers and test for those Web features. You should never do user agent sniffing. There is always the alternative of doing feature detection instead.

This is usually a bad practice, but there are some cases in which this is necessary. In these cases, you should first analyze your situation to be sure it's really necessary. Can you prevent it by adding some non-semantic <div> or <span> elements? The difficulty of successfully using user agent detection is worth a few disruptions to the purity of your HTML. Also, rethink your design: can you use progressive enhancement or fluid layouts to help remove the need to do this?

Avoiding user agent detection

If you want to avoid using user agent detection, you have options!

Feature detection is where you don't try to figure out which browser is rendering your page, but instead, you check to see if the specific feature you need is available. If it's not, you use a fallback. In those rare cases where behavior differs between browsers, instead of checking the user agent string, you should instead implement a test to detect how the browser implements the API and determine how to use it from that. An example of feature detection is as follows. In 2017, Chrome unflagged experimental lookbehind support in regular expressions , but no other browser supported it. So, you might have thought to do this:

The above code would have made several incorrect assumptions: First, it assumed that all user agent strings that include the substring "Chrome" are Chrome. UA strings are notoriously misleading. Then, it assumed that the lookbehind feature would always be available if the browser was Chrome. The agent might be an older version of Chrome, from before support was added, or (because the feature was experimental at the time) it could be a later version of Chrome that removed it. Most importantly, it assumed no other browsers would support the feature. Support could have been added to other browsers at any time, but this code would have continued choosing the inferior path.

Problems like these can be avoided by testing for support of the feature itself instead:

As the above code demonstrates, there is always a way to test browser support without user agent sniffing. There is never any reason to check the user agent string for this.

Lastly, the above code snippets bring about a critical issue with cross-browser coding that must always be taken into account. Don't unintentionally use the API you are testing for in unsupported browsers. This may sound obvious and simple, but sometimes it is not. For example, in the above code snippets, using lookbehind in short-regexp notation (for example, /reg/igm) will cause a parser error in unsupported browsers. Thus, in the above example, you would use new RegExp("(?<=look_behind_stuff)"); instead of /(?<=look_behind_stuff)/ , even in the lookbehind supported section of your code.

This design technique involves developing your website in 'layers', using a bottom-up approach, starting with a simpler layer and improving the capabilities of the site in successive layers, each using more features.

This is a top-down approach in which you build the best possible site using all the features you want, then tweak it to make it work on older browsers. This can be harder to do, and less effective, than progressive enhancement, but may be useful in some cases.

Arguably the most common use and misuse of user agent sniffing is to detect if the device is a mobile device. However, people too often overlook what they are really after. People use user agent sniffing to detect if the users' device is touch-friendly and has a small screen so they can optimize their website accordingly. While user agent sniffing can sometimes detect these, not all devices are the same: some mobile devices have big screen sizes, some desktops have a small touchscreen, some people use smart TV's which are an entirely different ballgame altogether, and some people can dynamically change the width and height of their screen by flipping their tablet on its side! So, user agent sniffing is definitely not the way to go. Thankfully, there are much better alternatives. Use Navigator.maxTouchPoints to detect if the user's device has a touchscreen. Then, default back to checking the user agent screen only if (!("maxTouchPoints" in navigator)) { /*Code here*/} . Using this information of whether the device has a touchscreen, do not change the entire layout of the website just for touch devices: you will only create more work and maintenance for yourself. Rather, add in touch conveniences such as bigger, more easily clickable buttons (you can do this using CSS by increasing the font size). Here is an example of code that increases the padding of #exampleButton to 1em on mobile devices.

As for the screen size, use window.innerWidth and window.addEventListener("resize", () => { /*refresh screen size dependent things*/ }). What you want to do for screen size is not slash off information on smaller screens. That will only annoy people because it will force them to use the desktop version. Rather, try to have fewer columns of information in a longer page on smaller screens while having more columns with a shorter page on larger screen sizes. This effect can be easily achieved using CSS flexboxes , sometimes with floats as a partial fallback.

Also try to move less relevant/important information down to the bottom and group the page's content together meaningfully. Although it is off-topic, perhaps the following detailed example might give you insights and ideas that persuade you to forgo user agent sniffing. Let us imagine a page composed of boxes of information; each box is about a different feline breed or canine breed. Each box has an image, an overview, and a historical fun fact. The pictures are kept to a maximum reasonable size even on large screens. For the purposes of grouping the content meaningfully, all the cat boxes are separated from all the dog boxes such that the cat and dog boxes are not intermixed together. On a large screen, it saves space to have multiple columns to reduce the space wasted to the left and to the right of the pictures. The boxes can be separated into multiple columns via two equally fair method. From this point on, we shall assume that all the dog boxes are at the top of the source code, that all the cat boxes are at the bottom of the source code, and that all these boxes have the same parent element. There a single instance of a dog box immediately above a cat box, of course. The first method uses horizontal Flexboxes to group the content such that when the page is displayed to the end user, all the dogs boxes are at the top of the page and all the cat boxes are lower on the page. The second method uses a Column layout and resents all the dogs to the left and all the cats to the right. Only in this particular scenario, it is appropriate to provide no fallback for the flexboxes/multicolumns, resulting in a single column of very wide boxes on old browsers. Also consider the following. If more people visit the webpage to see the cats, then it might be a good idea to put all the cats higher in the source code than the dogs so that more people can find what they are looking for faster on smaller screens where the content collapses down to one column.

Next, always make your code dynamic. The user can flip their mobile device on its side, changing the width and height of the page. Or, there might be some weird flip-phone-like device thing in the future where flipping it out extends the screen. Do not be the developer having a headache over how to deal with the flip-phone-like device thing. Never be satisfied with your webpage until you can open up the dev tools side panel and resize the screen while the webpage looks smooth, fluid, and dynamically resized. The simplest way to do this is to separate all the code that moves content around based on screen size to a single function that is called when the page is loaded and at each resize event thereafter. If there is a lot calculated by this layout function before it determines the new layout of the page, then consider debouncing the event listener such that it is not called as often. Also note that there is a huge difference between the media queries (max-width: 25em) , not all and (min-width: 25em) , and (max-width: 24.99em) : (max-width: 25em) excludes (max-width: 25em) , whereas not all and (min-width: 25em) includes (max-width: 25em) . (max-width: 24.99em) is a poor man's version of not all and (min-width: 25em) : do not use (max-width: 24.99em) because the layout might break on very high font sizes on very high definition devices in the future. Always be very deliberate about choosing the right media query and choosing the right >=, <=, >, or < in any corresponding JavaScript because it is very easy to get these mixed up, resulting in the website looking wonky right at the screen size where the layout changes. Thus, thoroughly test the website at the exact widths/heights where layout changes occur to ensure that the layout changes occur properly.

Making the best of user agent sniffing

After reviewing all of the above better alternatives to user agent sniffing, there are still some potential cases where user agent sniffing is appropriate and justified.

One such case is using user agent sniffing as a fallback when detecting if the device has a touch screen. See the Mobile Device Detection section for more information.

Another such case is for fixing bugs in browsers that do not automatically update. Webkit (on iOS) is a perfect example. Apple forces all of the browsers on IOS to use Webkit internally, thus the user has no way to get a better more updated browser on older devices. Most bugs can be detected, but some bugs take more effort to detect than others. In such cases, it might be beneficial to use user agent sniffing to save on performance. For example, Webkit 6 has a bug whereby when the device orientation changes, the browser might not fire MediaQueryList listeners when it should. To overcome this bug, observe the code below.

Which part of the user agent contains the information you are looking for?

As there is no uniformity of the different part of the user agent string, this is the tricky part.

Browser Name and version

When people say they want "browser detection", often they actually want "rendering engine detection". Do you actually want to detect Firefox, as opposed to SeaMonkey, or Chrome as opposed to Chromium? Or do you actually want to see if the browser is using the Gecko or the WebKit rendering engine? If this is what you need, see further down the page.

Most browsers set the name and version in the format BrowserName/VersionNumber . But as the name is not the only information in a user agent string that is in that format, you can not discover the name of the browser, you can only check if the name you are looking for exists. But note that some browsers are lying: Chrome for example reports both as Chrome and Safari. So to detect Safari you have to check for the Safari string and the absence of the Chrome string, Chromium often reports itself as Chrome too or Seamonkey sometimes reports itself as Firefox.

Also, pay attention not to use a simple regular expression on the BrowserName, user agents also contain strings outside the Keyword/Value syntax. Safari & Chrome contain the string 'like Gecko', for instance.

Of course, there is absolutely no guarantee that another browser will not hijack some of these things (like Chrome hijacked the Safari string in the past). That's why browser detection using the user agent string is unreliable and should be done only with the check of the version number (hijacking of past versions is less likely).

Rendering engine

As seen earlier, in most cases, looking for the rendering engine is a better way to go. This will help to not exclude lesser known browsers. Browsers sharing a common rendering engine will display a page in the same way: it is often a fair assumption that what will work in one will work in the other.

There are three active major rendering engines: Blink, Gecko, and WebKit. As sniffing the rendering engines names is common, a lot of user agents added other rendering names to trigger detection. It is therefore important to pay attention not to trigger false-positives when detecting the rendering engine.

Rendering engine version

Most rendering engines put the version number in the RenderingEngine/VersionNumber token, with the notable exception of Gecko. Gecko puts the Gecko version number in the comment part of the User Agent after the rv: string. From Gecko 14 for the mobile version and Gecko 17 for the desktop version, it also puts this value in the Gecko/version token (previous version put there the build date, then a fixed date called the GeckoTrail).

The Operating System is given in most User Agent strings (although not web-focused platforms like Firefox OS), but the format varies a lot. It is a fixed string between two semicolons, in the comment part of the User Agent. These strings are specific for each browser. They indicate the OS, but also often its version and information on the relying hardware (32 or 64 bits, or Intel/PPC for Mac).

Like in all cases, these strings may change in the future, one should use them only in conjunction with the detection of already released browsers. A technological survey must be in place to adapt the script when new browser versions are coming out.

Mobile, Tablet or Desktop

The most common reason to perform user agent sniffing is to determine which type of device the browser runs on. The goal is to serve different HTML to different device types.

  • Never assume that a browser or a rendering engine only runs on one type of device. Especially don't make different defaults for different browsers or rendering engines.
  • Never use the OS token to define if a browser is on mobile, tablet or desktop. The OS may run on more than one type of device (for example, Android runs on tablets as well as phones).

The following table summarizes the way common browser vendors indicate that their browsers are running on a mobile device:

In summary, we recommend looking for the string Mobi anywhere in the User Agent to detect a mobile device.

Note: If the device is large enough that it's not marked with Mobi , you should serve your desktop site (which, as a best practice, should support touch input anyway, as more desktop machines are appearing with touchscreens).

The User-Agent (UA) string is contained in the HTTP headers and is intended to identify devices requesting online content. The User-Agent tells the server what the visiting device is (among many other things) and this information can be used to determine what content to return. Of course this requires using a device detection solution which translates UAs into understandable software and hardware information.

How many User-Agent strings are there?

There are millions of User-Agent combinations given that UAs change with the software and hardware. For example, a Chrome browser on an iPhone 6 will introduce itself using a different UA than a Safari browser on the same phone.

Every device type, including phones, tablets, desktops, may come with its own UA that makes it possible to detect this device for any purpose. Interestingly bots and crawlers also come with their unique UAs.

Understanding the User-Agent string

These strings hold more insight than you may realize

As we browse the web, we've come to expect a seamlessly smooth experience from the websites we visit. And as website owners, we strive to improve the performance and engagement of our websites by understanding our visitors. We need to understand their different characteristics, from their location to the browser, operating system, and hardware of the device they are using to access our site.

This information supports a multitude of use cases, including website analytics and optimization, security features if your user logs in to your site with a new device, or content adaption tailored specifically to the device used (such as a mobile phone). These use cases all require knowledge of your user's device, browser, or operating system.

One way to gather this information is via the User-Agent – a type of HTTP request header. For nearly thirty years, the User-Agent has been a well-established part of the web experience. However, a new HTTP header has been created by Google to replace the User-Agent: User-Agent Client Hints (UA-CH).

We've got more information on User-Agent Client Hints later in this blog . In the meantime, let's dissect the User-Agent for more detail.

Unpacking the user-agent string, other user-agent strings, why are user-agent strings like this, software/operating systems, the web browser, device hardware, changing your user-agent string, the future of the user-agent string, user-agent device detection.

The information contained within a User-Agent HTTP request header is also known as the User-Agent (UA) string. This string contains information on the device. For example, if you browse the web on your smartphone, your device will send a HTTP request header to the web server, saying that it is a mobile device. The website will then respond and show you the mobile version of the page.

We could just give you a list of User-Agent strings and be done with it. But that’s not particularly good for developing your learning, is it?

Instead, let’s dissect some example User-Agent strings:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 12; Pixel 6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/93.0.4577.62 Mobile Safari/537.36

Mozilla/5.0 appears at the start of most UA strings. It can largely be ignored as it has no relevance to the associated device. Historically, it was used to indicate compatibility with the Mozilla rendering engine, a piece of software that draws text and images on the screen.

Linux; Android 12 tells us details about the operating system. In this case, the device is running the Android operating system, which is based on Linux.

For mobile User-Agent strings, the Pixel 6 section of the string tells us the device name or device model number. In this case, this User-Agent came from a Google Pixel 6 phone. In other instances (such as for a Windows desktop device), this element of the string may define the device architecture.

AppleWebKit/537.36 indicates what browser rendering engine is used. A rendering engine is what transforms HTML into an interactive webpage on the user’s screen. The WebKit browser engine was developed by Apple and is primarily used by Safari, Chromium, and all other WebKit-based browsers.

(KHTML, like Gecko) . This section of the string doesn’t necessarily provide more detail on the device but ensures compatibility for historical reasons. Check out the history of the User Agent string guide from Human Who Codes for more details.

And finally, Chrome/93.0.4577.62 Mobile Safari/537.36 has more detail on the browser and its version number. In this example, the device is using a mobile version of Chrome, version 93.

So, the different sections of this Chrome User-Agent string are:

Let’s look at another example, this time it’s a Firefox User-Agent:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:94.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/94.0

Firefox User Agent strings tend to follow a four-component format, whereas Chrome User Agent strings may include more elements. In the above case, the rendering engine is Gecko, and rv:94.0 is its version number. Win64; x64 indicates that the device is using the 64-bit version of Windows with x64 computer architecture.

The Mozilla/5.0 and (KHTML, like Gecko) parts of a User-Agent string can largely be ignored, but why were they included in the first place?

Originally, the User-Agent string wasn't designed to be confusing, but it was a necessary evil to ensure compatibility between new and old browsers. For new browsers to ensure they got a slice of the browser market share pie, they need to make sure that they're not excluded because they're new.

As an example, there's a new browser on the block called "VeryNewBrowser". Your User-Agent contains information that you are using VeryNewBrowser to access a website. Many sites will (incorrectly!) see that VeryNewBrowser is not PopularBrowser, so will serve you a crappy version of the website.

To counteract this, the User-Agent could contain "PopularBrowser (actually VeryNewBrowser)" which fools the web server into thinking that you are using PopularBrowser.

This addition to the User-Agent string continues for many many years, until eventually you end up where we are today. Everyone claims to be Mozilla 5.0; Android Chrome claims to be Mobile Safari; Mobile Safari claims to be Gecko. It can get very confusing, very quickly. User-Agent strings don't necessarily follow the same format. You may see a string that looks like the following:

Dalvik/2.1.0 (Linux; U; Android 9.0; ZTE BA520 Build/MRA58K)

Looks scary, right? But when you start to look deeper, you can see that this is a ZTE Android phone. To gather more insight, you can run the UA string through our User-Agent parser and it’ll decode the rest!

It’s important to note that it’s not always easy to detect a device. For example, iPad or iPhone User-Agent strings don’t always contain a lot of information on the device. Additionally, with each new Apple device that is released, it gets harder to identify between the latest devices.

With the release of iOS 12.2 , Apple have altered the values returned from WebGL to prevent the precise iPhone or iPad model of an iOS device being obtained in JavaScript.

In the following User-Agent string, we can only identify that this is an iPhone device – we can’t determine the exact device model.

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 12_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/12.1 Mobile/15E148 Safari/604.1

Let’s talk about the operating systems (OS) section of the UA string. Some of the main OS software used by various devices are Android, Windows, and Chrome OS (a Linux-based desktop OS developed by Google).

For Apple devices, we have iOS, iPadOS, macOS (previously Mac OS X and later OS X), tvOS, and watchOS. You could also include Darwin in this list, as it is an open-source Unix-like operating system first released by Apple in 2000. (Fun fact: Darwin forms the core set of components upon which the other Apple OS software are built upon.)

Within a UA string, you might find information on both the operating system and its version number. Each software vendor determines their own numbering system, as well as whether each release is a minor or major increment.

Seems simple, but don’t assume a software vendor will always follow the same pattern for a new release – sometimes conventions can change, or version numbers are skipped. And if that wasn’t enough, the User-Agent doesn’t always present the browser name and version number in a consistent manner.

To keep our User-Agent string database healthy, we regularly map new User-Agents, especially when there are new OS versions that have recently been released. It’s imperative that we provide our customers with the most accurate and up-to-date User-Agent database available.

The UA string also contains information on the type of web browser that is used by the device. Some of the more commonly known web browsers are Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, and Opera.

Like software vendors, each browser vendor (think Google for Chrome, and Mozilla for Firefox) determines their own numbering system. Browser versions can be represented in the string at various stages of the development cycle. For example, a UA string might contain a browser that is in beta, canary, or developer stage.

Again, the browser name and version number aren’t always presented in a consistent manner. For example, let’s look at this common Android User-Agent string:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 10; POT-LX1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/95.0.4621.2 Mobile Safari/537.36

At first glance, you may look at this UA string and assume the browser vendor is Mozilla, or even Safari on mobile (thanks to the Mozilla/5.0’ and Mobile Safari/537.36 portions of the string). In fact, for this string, the browser is Chrome version 95.0.4621.2. It pays to slow down and carefully analyze a UA string!

If you are ever in doubt about what information is contained within a UA string, we recommend referring to our User-Agent tester to do all the hard analysis for you.

Within the UA string, there is a key element present that can be used to detect the device. This element details whether the physical device that is accessing the website is a mobile phone, tablet, e-reader, smart TV, or games console (to name but a few).

For example, the UA string below tells us that the device is a 2018 model Samsung Galaxy J7:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 8.0.0; SAMSUNG SM-J737F ) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) SamsungBrowser/14.0 Chrome/87.0.4280.141 Mobile Safari/537.36

Sometimes, it’s difficult to be certain of a device’s hardware. The biggest reason for this is because the UA string is lacking information, or the device could belong to multiple vendors.

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 9; S20_EEA Build/PPR1.180610.011; wv) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Chrome/95.0.4638.74 Safari/537.36

In this UA string, the only supplied information on the device is ‘S20’. That could refer to any of these hardware vendors:

Samsung Galaxy S20

CONQUEST S20

A User-Agent isn’t always associated with a physical device. Sometimes they represent something called a crawler.

A crawler is a type of web traffic that operates without human interaction. Its purpose is to monitor the availability or performance of a website, retrieving information to be included into search engines or monitoring services.

Crawlers go by many names – bots, robots, spiders, probes, monitors – but they are typically easy to spot and not necessarily harmful to your website.

A good crawler will proudly identify itself as a crawler, often including “bot” at some point within their UA string:

Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; bingbot/2.0; +http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm)

However, bad crawlers may crawl your website to find email addresses to send spam to, or to try and gain access to your website development login page. Since these bad crawlers will actively try to hide their intentions, they may spoof their User-Agent to look like a bog-standard device.

Let’s talk more about User-Agent spoofing, as mentioned above. User-Agent spoofing can be boiled down to replacing characters in your User-Agent string with anything from a few characters to the whole string.

It’s surprisingly easy to change your UA string – you can change your browser User-Agent by pressing F12 on your keyboard to open your browser’s debug tool . Alternatively, most major browsers have plugins that can spoof the UA for you. Search for “User-Agent changer” or “User-Agent switcher” in your browser’s plugins and add-ons to see what’s available.

One benefit of spoofing your User-Agent is that you can test your website for various devices. It’s easy to change the string from a desktop to a mobile. However, there are more reliable ways to test your website for its mobile friendliness (check out our article on mobile emulators to learn more).

The accessibility of User-Agent spoofing is great for the humble user who just wants to test their website on a different device. But in the hands of a malicious crawler, having a fake User-Agent can alter the accuracy of device detection.

When the whole string is changed, it can be near-impossible to detect whether the string belongs to a real device or not. However, when only part of the string is changed, it is still possible to detect the device with a fair level of accuracy.

For example, let’s take this spoofed User-Agent string:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux;Android 3.1ipad 4 Build/AppleWebKit Gecko) Version/4.0 Safari/534

There is conflicting information in this string, as it contains both Android and iPad. An iPad User-Agent tends to follow the format Mozilla/5.0 (iPad... , which isn’t the case here. Therefore, you can deduce that this is an Android device, not iPad.

You can see from this article that we know our onions when it comes to detecting information from a User-Agent HTTP request header.

However, change is on the horizon. Google's alternative to the User-Agent HTTP header, User-Agent Client Hints (UA-CH) , are due to reduce the UA string on all Chrome devices in the first half of 2023.

User-Agent Client Hints dissect device information in a similar way to the User-Agent, but often includes additional information in the response, such as Sec-CH-UA-Platform or Sec-CH-UA-Mobile.

This unilateral change pushed by only the one company has forced others to adapt, regardless of whether they want to or not. Not all the User-Agent Client Hints are sent by default, so website owners will need to undertake extra work to adapt to the change. Some will inevitably drag their heels, which could cause their website to break.

Migrate to User-Agent Client Hints

Strategies to migrate your site from relying on the user-agent string to the new User-Agent Client Hints.

The User-Agent string is a significant passive fingerprinting surface in browsers, as well as being difficult to process. However, there are all kinds of valid reasons for collecting and processing user-agent data, so what's needed is a path to a better solution. User-Agent Client Hints provide both an explicit way to declare your need for user-agent data and methods to return the data in an easy-to-use format.

This article will take you through auditing your access to user-agent data and migrating user-agent string usage to User-Agent Client Hints.

Audit collection and use of user-agent data

As with any form of data collection, you should always understand why you are collecting it. The first step, regardless of whether or not you will be taking any action, is to understand where and why you are using user-agent data.

If you don't know if or where user-agent data is being used, consider searching your front-end code for use of navigator.userAgent and your back-end code for use of the User-Agent HTTP header. You should also check your front-end code for use of already deprecated features, such as navigator.platform and navigator.appVersion .

From a functional point of view, think about anywhere in your code where you are recording or processing:

  • Browser name or version
  • Operating system name or version
  • Device make or model
  • CPU type, architecture, or bitness (for example, 64-bit)

It's also likely that you may be using a third-party library or service to process the user-agent. In this case, check to see if they are updating to support User-Agent Client Hints.

Are you only using basic user-agent data?

The default set of User-Agent Client Hints includes:

  • Sec-CH-UA : browser name and major/significant version
  • Sec-CH-UA-Mobile : boolean value indicating a mobile device
  • Note that this has been updated in the spec and will be reflected in Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers shortly.

The reduced version of the user-agent string that is proposed will also retain this basic information in a backwards-compatible way. For example, instead of Chrome/90.0.4430.85 the string would include Chrome/90.0.0.0 .

If you are only checking the user-agent string for browser name, major version, or operating system, then your code will continue to work though you are likely to see deprecation warnings.

While you can and should migrate to User-Agent Client Hints, you may have legacy code or resource constraints that prevent this. The reduction of information in the user-agent string in this backwards-compatible way is intended to ensure that while existing code will receive less detailed information, it should still retain basic functionality.

Strategy: On-demand client-side JavaScript API

If you are currently using navigator.userAgent you should transition to preferring navigator.userAgentData before falling back to parsing the user-agent string.

If you are checking for mobile or desktop, use the boolean mobile value:

userAgentData.brands is an array of objects with brand and version properties where the browser is able to list its compatibility with those brands. You can access it directly as an array or you may want to use a some() call to check if a specific entry is present:

If you need one of the more detailed, high-entropy user-agent values, you will need to specify it and check for the result in the returned Promise :

You may also want to use this strategy if you would like to move from server-side processing to client-side processing. The JavaScript API does not require access to HTTP request headers, so user-agent values can be requested at any point.

Strategy: Static server-side header

If you are using the User-Agent request header on the server and your needs for that data are relatively consistent across your entire site, then you can specify the desired client hints as a static set in your responses. This is a relatively simple approach since you generally only need to configure it in one location. For example, it may be in your web server configuration if you already add headers there, your hosting configuration, or top-level configuration of the framework or platform you use for your site.

Consider this strategy if you are transforming or customizing the responses served based on the user-agent data.

Browsers or other clients may choose to supply different default hints, so it's good practice to specify everything you need, even if it's generally provided by default.

For example, the current defaults for Chrome would be represented as:

When processing this on the server-side you should first check if the desired Sec-CH-UA header has been sent and then fallback to the User-Agent header parsing if it is not available.

Strategy: Delegating hints to cross-origin requests

If you are requesting cross-origin or cross-site subresources that require User-Agent Client Hints to be sent on their requests then you will need to explicitly specify the desired hints using a Permissions Policy.

For example, let's say that https://blog.site hosts resources on https://cdn.site which can return resources optimized for a specific device. https://blog.site can ask for the Sec-CH-UA-Model hint, but needs to explicitly delegate it to https://cdn.site using the Permissions-Policy header. The list of policy-controlled hints is available in the Clients Hints Infrastructure draft

You can specify multiple hints for multiple origins, and not just from the ch-ua range:

Strategy: Delegating hints to iframes

Cross-origin iframes work in a similar way to cross-origin resources, but you specify the hints you would like to delegate in the allow attribute.

The allow attribute in the iframe will override any Accept-CH header that widget.site may send itself, so make sure you've specified everything the iframe'd site will need.

Strategy: Dynamic server-side hints

If you have specific parts of the user journey where you need a larger selection of hints than across the rest of the site, you may choose to request those hints on demand rather than statically across the entire site. This is more complex to manage, but if you already set different headers on a per route basis it may be feasible.

The important thing to remember here is that each instance of the Accept-CH header will effectively overwrite the existing set. So, if you are dynamically setting the header then each page must request the full set of hints required.

For example, you may have one section on your site where you want to provide icons and controls that match the user's operating system. For this, you may want to additionally pull in Sec-CH-UA-Platform-Version to serve appropriate subresources.

There may be cases where you require more than the default set of hints on the very first request, however this is likely to be rare so make sure you've reviewed the reasoning.

The first request really means the very first top-level request for that origin sent in that browsing session. The default set of hints includes the browser name with major version, the platform, and the mobile indicator. So the question to ask here is, do you require extended data on the initial page load?

For additional hints on the first request there are two options. First, you can make use of the Critical-CH header. This takes the same format as Accept-CH but tells the browser that it should immediately retry the request if the first one was sent without the critical hint.

This will incur the overhead of the retry on the very first request, but the implementation cost is relatively low. Send the extra header and the browser will do the rest.

For situations where you require really do require additional hints on the very first page load, the Client Hints Reliability proposal is laying out a route to specify hints in the connection-level settings. This makes use of the Application-Layer Protocol Settings(ALPS) extension to TLS 1.3 to enable this early passing of hints on HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 connections. This is still at a very early stage, but if you actively manage your own TLS and connection settings then this is an ideal time to contribute.

Strategy: Legacy support

You may have legacy or third-party code on your site that depends on navigator.userAgent , including portions of the user-agent string that will be reduced. Long-term you should plan to move to the equivalent navigator.userAgentData calls, but there is an interim solution.

UA-CH retrofill is a small library that allows you to overwrite navigator.userAgent with a new string built from the requested navigator.userAgentData values.

For example, this code will generate a user-agent string that additionally includes the "model" hint:

The resulting string would show the Pixel 5 model, but still shows the reduced 92.0.0.0 as the uaFullVersion hint was not requested:

What does it do.

UserAgents.io provides a simple way to parse a user agent and get technical information about it. The database is updated daily and easy to navigate.

What is an user-agent?

The User-Agent request-header field contains information about the user agent originating the request.

This is for statistical purposes, the tracing of protocol violations, and automated recognition of user agents for the sake of tailoring responses to avoid particular user agent limitations.

User agents SHOULD include this field with requests. The field can contain multiple product tokens and comments identifying the agent and any subproducts which form a significant part of the user agent. By convention, the product tokens are listed in order of their significance for identifying the application.

What is User-Agent reduction?

User-Agent (UA) reduction minimizes the identifying information shared in the User-Agent string, which may be used for passive fingerprinting . Now that these changes have been rolled out for general availability, all resource requests have a reduced User-Agent header. As a result, the return values from certain Navigator interfaces are reduced, including: navigator.userAgent , navigator.appVersion , and navigator.platform .

Web developers should review their site code for usage of the User-Agent string. If your site relies on parsing the User-Agent string to read the device model, platform version, or full browser version, you'll need to implement the User-Agent Client Hints API .

User-Agent Client Hints (UA-CH)

User-Agent Client Hints allow access to the full set of User-Agent data, but only when servers actively declare an explicit need for specific pieces of data.

By removing passively exposed user data, we better measure and reduce the amount of information that is intentionally exposed by request headers, JavaScript APIs, and other mechanisms.

Why do we need reduced UA and UA-CH?

Historically, the User-Agent string would broadcast a large string of data about a user's browser, operating system, and version with every HTTP request. This was problematic for two reasons:

  • The granularity and abundance of detail can lead to user identification.
  • The default availability of this information can lead to covert tracking.

Reduced UA and UA-CH improve user privacy by sharing only basic information by default.

The reduced User-Agent includes the browser's brand and a significant version, where the request came from (desktop or mobile), and the platform. To access more data, User-Agent Client Hints allow you to request specific information about the user's device or conditions.

Further, over time the User-Agent string grew longer and more complex, which led to error-prone string parsing. UA-CH provides structured and reliable data that is easier to interpret. Existing code that parses the UA string shouldn't break (though it will return less data), and you'll need to migrate to UA-CH if your site needs specific client information .

How does the reduced UA and UA-CH work?

Here is a brief example of how the reduced User-Agent string and UA-CH work. For a more in-depth example, review Improving user privacy and developer experience with User-Agent Client Hints .

A user opens the browser and enters example.com into the address bar:

  • The browser includes the User-Agent header with the reduced User-Agent string. For example: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 10; K) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/98.0.0.0 Mobile Safari/537.36
  • The browser includes that same information in the default User-Agent Client Hint headers. For example: powershell Sec-CH-UA: "Chrome"; v="98" Sec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?1 Sec-CH-UA-Platform: "Android"
  • The server can ask the browser to send additional client hints, such as the device model, with the Accept-CH response header. For example: Accept-CH: Sec-CH-UA, Sec-CH-UA-Mobile, Sec-CH-UA-Platform, Sec-CH-UA-Model
  • The browser applies policies and user configuration to determine what data is allowed to return to the server in subsequent request headers. For example: powershell Sec-CH-UA: "Chrome"; v="93" Sec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?1 Sec-CH-UA-Platform: "Android" Sec-CH-UA-Model: "Pixel 2"

Critical Client Hints

If you need a specific set of Client Hints in your initial request, you can use the Critical-CH response header. Critical-CH values must be a subset of the values requested by Accept-CH .

For example, the initial request may include a request for Device-Memory and Viewport-Width , where Device-Memory is considered critical.

If the browser requires a critical hint ( Critical-CH ) to properly render the webpage, then the server can ask for this additional information with the Accept-CH header. Then, the browser can send a new request for the page, including the critical hint.

In summary, Accept-CH requests all values you'd like for the page, while Critical-CH requests only the subset of values you must have on-load to properly load the page. Refer to the Client Hints Reliability specification for more information.

Detect tablet devices with the UA-CH API

As the line between mobile, tablet, and desktop devices continues to become less distinct and dynamic form factors are more common (folding screens, switching between laptop and tablet mode), it's advisable to use responsive design and feature detection to present an appropriate user interface.

However, information provided by the browser for both the User-Agent string and User-Agent Client Hints comes from the same source, so the same forms of logic should work.

For example, if this pattern is checked on the UA string:

  • Phone pattern: 'Android' + 'Chrome/[.0-9]* Mobile'
  • Tablet pattern: 'Android' + 'Chrome/[.0-9]* (?!Mobile)'

The matching default UA-CH headers interface may be checked:

  • Phone pattern: Sec-CH-UA-Platform: "Android" , Sec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?1
  • Tablet pattern: Sec-CH-UA-Platform: "Android" , Sec-CH-UA-Mobile: ?0

Or the equivalent JavaScript interface:

  • Phone pattern: navigator.userAgentData.platform === 'Android' && navigator.userAgentData.mobile === true
  • Tablet pattern: navigator.userAgentData.platform === 'Android' && navigator.userAgentData.mobile === false

For hardware-specific use cases, the device model name can be requested via the high-entropy Sec-CH-UA-Model hint.

How do I use and test reduced UA?

To begin, review your site code for instances and uses of the User-Agent string. If your site relies on parsing the User-Agent string to read the device model, platform version, or full browser version, you'll need to implement the UA-CH API .

Once you've updated to the UA-CH API, you should test to ensure you get the data you expect from the User-Agent. There are three ways to test, each increasing in complexity.

Scaled availability for User-Agent reduction means the fully reduced UA string shipped on all Chrome devices. Reduction began with a Chrome minor release in Q2 of 2022.

Test custom strings locally

If you want to test your site using custom User-Agent strings to simulate different devices, launch Chrome with the --user-agent="Custom string here" command-line flag. Find more on command-line flags here.

Alternatively, use the device emulator in Chrome DevTools.

Transform the string in your site's code

If you process the existing Chrome user-agent string in your client-side or server-side code, you can transform that string to the new format to test compatibility. You can test by either overriding and replacing the string, or generating the new version and test side by side.

Support for Client Hints and critical hints

There are three default Client Hints returned to the server, including browser name and major version, a boolean that indicates if the browser is on a mobile device, and the operating system name. These are sent after the Transport Layer Security protocol (TLS) handshake. These are already available and supported in your browser.

However, there may be times when you need to retrieve critical information for your site to render.

Optimize critical hints

A TLS handshake is the first step to create a secure connection between the browser and web server. Without an intervention, the Critical-CH response header was designed to tell the browser to immediately retry the request if the first one was sent without a critical hint.

To optimize critical hints ( Critical-CH header ), you must intercept this handshake and provide a model for Client Hints. These steps may be complex, and require advanced knowledge.

The ACCEPT_CH HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 frames , combined with the TLS ALPS extension , is a connection-level optimization to deliver the server's Client Hint preferences in time for the first HTTP request. These require complex configuration, and we recommend only using this for truly critical information.

BoringSSL (a fork of OpenSSL) helps you work with Google's experimental features in Chromium. At this time, ALPS is only implemented in BoringSSL .

How long will hints specified via the Accept-CH header be sent?

Hints specified via the Accept-CH header will be sent for the duration of the browser session or until a different set of hints is specified.

Does UA-CH work with HTTP/2 and HTTP/3?

UA-CH works with both HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 connections.

Do subdomains (and CNAMEs) require a top-level page Permissions-Policy to access high-entropy UA-CH?

High-entropy UA-CH on request headers are restricted on cross-origin requests regardless of how that origin is defined on the DNS side. Delegation must be handled via Permissions-Policy for any cross-origin subresource or obtained via JavaScript that executes in the cross-origin context.

How does User-Agent reduction affect bot detection?

Chrome's change to its User-Agent string does not directly impact the User-Agent string that a bot chooses to send.

Bots may choose to update their own strings to reflect the reduced information Chrome sends, but that is entirely their implementation choice. Chrome is still sending the same User-Agent format, and bots that append their own identifier to the end of a Chrome User-Agent string can continue to do so.

For any concerns with specific bots, it may be worth reaching out directly to the owners to ask if they have any plans to change their User-Agent string.

Reduction Preparation

Phase 1: Warn about accessing navigator.userAgent, navigator.appVersion, and navigator.platform in DevTools, beginning in M92.

Phase 2: Chrome 95 to Chrome 100 Launch an Origin Trial for sites to opt into the final reduced UA string for testing and feedback, for at least 6 months.

Reduction Rollout

Phase 3: Chrome 100 Launch a reverse Origin Trial, for instances where a site may need more time for migration, for at least 6 months.

Phase 4: Chrome 101 Ship reduced Chrome MINOR.BUILD.PATCH version numbers (“0.0.0”). Once rolled-out, the reduced UA string would apply to all page loads on desktop and mobile OSes that do not opt into the reverse Origin Trial.

Phase 5: Chrome 107 Begin roll-out of reduced Desktop UA string and related JS APIs (navigator.userAgent, navigator.appVersion, navigator.platform). Once rolled-out, the reduced UA string would apply to all page loads on desktop OSes that do not opt into the reverse Origin Trial.

Phase 6: Chrome 110 Begin roll-out of reduced Android Mobile (and Tablet) UA string and related JS APIs. Once rolled-out, the reduced UA string would apply to all page loads on Android that do not opt into the reverse Origin Trial.

Reduction Completion Phase 7: Chrome 113 reverse Origin Trial ends and all page loads receive the reduced UA string and related JS APIs.

Alternative: high entropy client hints

All of the information that was contained in the User-Agent string prior to reduction is available through the high entropy client hints, which are available by request through the User-Agent Client Hints request headers, as well as the navigator.userAgentData.getHighEntropyValues Javascript API.

What do I do after the reduction deprecation OT ends in May 2023?

Be sure to prepare and test if you are OK with the default values provided by the reduced UA and if not then migrate to User-Agent Client Hints .

I'm an SSP. How can I be ready for UACH?

Considerations

To continue to get accurate values you will need to call the User-Agent Client Hints API (“UA-CH”) which is accessed via JavaScript or HTTP Headers.

Open RTB 2.6 introduces a new field for Structured UA in section 3.2.29 which standardized how you would pass it into the bidstream after populating from UA-CH.

To minimize disruption for ongoing campaigns, we recommend integrating with UA-CH, passing the data in the bidstream following the OpenRTB 2.6 spec, and notifying your DSP partners of this change ensuring they are looking at device.sua .

If you need more time, you can retain access through late May 2023 via the reduction deprecation trial .

Questions to ask your team

  • Have you already integrated with User-Agent Client Hints and are passing that data into the bidstream?
  • Are you passing UA-CH into the bidstream in line with the OpenRTB 2.6 spec? (see section 3.2.29 which describes capturing structured UA within device.sua).
  • Have you coordinated with your buy-side partners to ensure they are aware of and relying on the new Structured UA fields within your bidstream?

Answered yes to all the above? Great! You are ready and successfully migrated to UA-CH. If you answered no to any of the prior questions please make sure you review "Actions to take" below to ensure you're ready.

  • Companies who need more time to migrate to the UA-CH API can join the reduction deprecation trial that extends access to the legacy User-Agent string through the end of May 2023.
  • Once registered, you will need to update your HTTP Response headers for your production traffic.
  • While this provides access until May 23, 2023, you should still integrate with UA-CH to continue to have access to accurate values.
  • Reach out to your DSP partners and let them know you are passing ua information like device model and OS version in the device.sua of OpenRTB 2.6.
  • If they continue to rely only on the device.ua , they will no longer be able to access information like device model or Android OS version.
