Presidents Cup Day 1: Live scoreboard, highlights, updates from pro golf competition
It's U.S. vs. the world ... in Canada.
Follow along with us as some of the best men's golfers in the world square off in the Presidents Cup competition at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal .
In this competition, similar to the Ryder Cup, the PGA Tour pins a team of United States golfers against a team of golfers from all other countries.
Presidents Cup format
The two, 12-man teams will compete in four days of competitions. Thursday is four-ball (best ball), in which five sets of two players per side square off and the best score among the four wins the hole. Friday features foursomes (alternate shot), where five sets of two players per side play the same ball. Saturday is a combination of both four-ball (four matchups) and foursomes (four matchups) and Sunday is 12 singles matches in stroke play.
The winner of each hole earns one point, while a tie on the hole does not move the score. Each match win equals a point toward the final score, and if the match remains square through 18 holes, each side is awarded a half-point.
The team that reaches 15.5 points first will win the 15th edition of the Presidents Cup. The U.S. has won the last nine Presidents Cups and 12 of the 14 matchups overall (with one tie).

What’s in Our Queue? Chucho Valdés and More
By Jenny Gross Sept. 25, 2024
- Share full article
I’m on assignment in Brussels, where I’m covering the European Union. I’m usually reading several books at the same time, and lately, as I get to know the city, I’ve been exploring restaurants, cafes and museums.
Here are five things I’ve been listening to, watching and discovering →
I cannot stop listening to the Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés’s rendition of “Embraceable You.” Maybe it’s something about hearing a different, jazzy take on an old George and Ira Gershwin favorite, as I explore a new city, that feels fitting right now.
Villa Empain, built in Brussels in the 1930s, is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture. It was a private residence, and then an art museum, and then was requisitioned by the German army after Hitler invaded Belgium, before being repurposed into the Soviet Union’s embassy. Today, it hosts exhibitions and is worth visiting for the building alone.
Learn more about the villa here.
I have read Jhumpa Lahiri’s New Yorker article “Teach Yourself Italian” too many times to count. Her memoir, “In Other Words,” explores her love affair with the language. She describes English as a “hairy, smelly teenager” menacing her nascent Italian, which she cradles “like a newborn.” In Brussels, surrounded by French, I can relate.
Brussels empties in the summer, but I spent August in town. I’m a big fan of the French television show “Échappées Belles” (“Beautiful Escapes”), where a guide takes viewers to places around the world, interviewing locals about food, culture and history. It’s the next best thing to being on vacation myself.
Watch the episodes here.
This was the last show I saw in London before moving to Brussels. Going to the Open Air Theater in Regent’s Park is a summer ritual for me. It’s magical. The shows start when it’s light out, the music accompanied by the chirping birds nearby. After sunset, you can just make out the rustling of the trees surrounding the stage.
Here are some more favorites:
Arts and Culture Across Europe
Atri Banerjee, a theater director, has channeled his own experiences into a new production of John Osborne’s groundbreaking 1956 work “Look Back in Anger.”
Answering hatred with glitter is a time-honored drag tradition that France’s answer to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is keeping alive in a new stage spectacle.
The Pompidou Center is creating international outposts, including in Brussels and Seoul, to help fund a renovation of its Paris home. What happens now that Jersey City has pulled out?
In 2023, the British Museum said it had fired a curator for stealing from its supposedly lock-tight storerooms and selling the artifacts online. Ever since, the museum has struggled to deal with the fallout .
Francesca Moody, a British theater producer, has put on some of the Edinburgh Fringe’s biggest breakout hits, including “Baby Reindeer” and “Fleabag.” This year, she has three shows that she’s hoping will go global .

Multi-hyphenate and red carpet showstopper Billy Porter is going on the road in 2023. The Tony winner has announced the first leg of his “Black Mona Lisa Tour,” marking his first proper headlining trek across the US.
Backed by a full band and a video installation, the “Black Mona Lisa Tour” will see Porter tell his life story through song — intermingling tracks from his Broadway performances, the Pose soundtrack, as well as his own solo pop career.
The 25-date tour kicks off on April 29th in Seattle at the Paramount Theatre, before Porter then makes stops in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, as well as his hometown of Pittsburgh. It’ll conclude on June 3rd at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
“It’s really the first time that I’ve been able to fully express myself and who I am through my music,” Porter said in a press release. “Through my mainstream pop music space. It’s like my magnum opus. It’s everything to me. You’ll really get a glimpse into who I am even deeper with this music.”
A ticket pre-sale for the “Black Mona Lisa Tour” begin today, March 9th, at 10:00 a.m. local time (use code OPENER ), with general sale following tomorrow, March 10th at the same time; grab yours at Ticketmaster . Porter has also announced that he’s releasing a new single called “Baby Was a Dancer” on March 24th, which serves as a preview of his upcoming album Black Mona Lisa (release date TBA). Consequence chatted with Porter last year about his directorial debut, Anything’s Possible .

Anthrax + Black Label Society Announce Second Leg of North American Tour Dates With Exodus
Rock on! If you missed out on Anthrax and Black Label Society touring together in 2022, fear not as a second North American tour leg has been booked for early 2023, with special guests Exodus joining the bill as well.
The tour gets underway Jan. 17 in Boise, Idaho, making four stops in Canada along the way as the bands cross the country before wrapping up back out on the West Coast in Oakland, Calif., on Feb. 18. See all of the dates, cities and venues for the run listed below.
Anthrax has spent most of the year celebrating their 40th anniversary as a group and issuing their XL live album over this past year. This comes as the band continues to work toward a new studio album. Meanwhile, Black Label Society last released Doom Crew Inc. in 2021 and have continued to tour in support of the effort. Exodus also have a 2021 release to support, as they mix in tunes from their Persona Non Grata album with their other hits.
Anthrax says of the run, "We are so pumped to be hitting the road again with Black Label Society. We had such a great time when we toured with them earlier this year, that we had talked about doing it again when we were still on the road together. And, having the guys from Exodus on the bill as special guest, will definitely make this a tour not to miss."
Black Label Society's Zakk Wylde adds, "Anthrax is one of the bestest legendary metal/thrash bands of all time. I have been buds with Scotty, Charlie, Frankie and Joey for over 3O years and they are some of the bestest people you will meet. Jon is the bestest new addition Anthrax could ask for. The Anthrax + Black Label Society & Exodus tour is going to be one of the bestest tours ever!!"
Exodus guitarist Gary Holt comments, "Exodus are super stoked to announce that we will be touring with Anthrax and Black Label Society. Touring with our long-time friends in Anthrax is always an epic good time, and now we get to tour with BLS and watch Zakk and company rip it up nightly too! Going to be awesome and we will be bringing our unique brand of audio violence to every city! Let the metal roll!"
Tickets for the run will go on sale to the general public this Friday (Nov. 4) at 10AM local time. VIP packages will also be available. Check Anthrax's website for ticketing info.

Listen: The National Preview ‘Rome’ Live Collection with ‘NTL RM EP I’
While crossing North America with the Zen Diagram Tour, The National have officially announced Rome , a new full-length live collection. Set to release on Dec. 13, the band’s forthcoming concert album chronicles its June 3 performance at Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, capturing the captivating era-spanning program of its recent live appearances with 21 tracks. To preview the project, the band has shared four songs from the show on NTL RM EP I .
The first EP from Rome features four fan favorites unearthed from the band’s deep discography, delivered with gravity and grit honed over two decades at the forefront of alternative rock. The iconic standout hit “I Need My Girl,” drawn from 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me , introduces the album with frontman Matt Berninger’s haunting vocals. This moody atmosphere gets a shot in the arm from the follow-up “Lemonworld,” which opens up the lo-fi interiority of the 2010 High Violet classic for darkly propulsive, arena-suited treatment. “The Geese of Beverly Road” and “Lit Up,” both from 2005’s Alligator , round out the first taste of Rome with a twin testament to the ferocious energy that distinguishes The National onstage from The National on tape.
Rome was mixed without overdubs by the band’s longtime producer and collaborator Peter Katis. Other cuts to be included on the double album include essentials like “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “Don’t Swallow the Cap,” “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness,” “England” and “Fake Empire,” alongside more recent entries like “Eucalyptus,” “New Order T-Shirt,” and “Tropic Morning News.” The album will be released on digital and two-LP vinyl formats, as well as a limited Italian flag-themed three-LP pressing with five bonus songs exclusive to members of the group’s Cherry Tree fan club. Pre-order the album here .
In advance of its album release, The National will continue to make headlines on the Zen Diagram Tour with The War on Drugs and Lucius. The trio of indie mainstays will touch down next at Chicago’s United Center tomorrow, Sept. 24, then keep on for 11 further stops through Oct. 10. For tickets and more information on the tour, visit americanmary.com .

Spanning from Oct. 15, 2022, to June 21, 2023, the trek is set to make stops in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. As of press time, the official Born Pink world tour website reads “and more” at the end of the list of dates, indicating that additional dates may be on the way.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO goes supernova as final tour stops in Boston
It’s a shame, really, that many of Electric Light Orchestra’s gems have been placed in movie soundtracks and TV advertisements ad nauseam, to the point that the opening piano notes of a song like “Mr. Blue Sky” immediately call to mind products from Volkswagen or Adobe . But when presented in its proper form, cheerfully rocketing toward the rafters of TD Garden with Jeff Lynne at the helm, the song’s live performance wipes that commercial slate clean and recalibrates its original, brilliant solar power.
Jeff Lynne’s ELO descended upon the Boston arena Monday night with a supernova of a final showdown, bidding farewell to the project with 90 minutes of rock-spiked orchestral splendor. A decade after reforming the group — and adopting a slightly different moniker — the 76-year-old Lynne led TD Garden through a final, immersive tour of the ELO universe , from 1971′s “10538 Overture” to their newer offering “One More Time.”
While Lynne looked unsure of himself at times, and missed (but quickly recovered from) a few cues to sing, Monday’s date of “The Over and Out Tour” reminded fans of his genius when sculpting and arranging layers of sound. Flanked by a 12-piece band, key stops on Lynne’s solar stroll included the galloping synth grandeur of “Turn to Stone,” operatic groovemaker “Rockaria!,” and trancelike waltz “Strange Magic,” whose magnetic, drifting quality was amplified by Lynne’s still-nimble and emotive vocals. Monday night was a low-energy ordeal for the frontman physically, but not vocally, as he stretched his narrative range between weary, unanswered calls on “Telephone Line” and upbeat pleas during “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” (a little assistance from backup singer Iain Hornal, who periodically filled in Lynne’s lines, didn’t hurt either).
Propelled by Lynne’s lasting sense of wonder and a spirited string section, ELO’s catalog has long boasted an antidepressant effect, which is especially apparent when compared to today’s more cynical pop landscape. The disparity between Lynne’s buoyancy and Top 40′s mainstream malaise helped cuts like “Livin’ Thing” and “Shine a Little Love” ascend to new emotional heights, casting a meteor shower of optimism over fans.
Lynne’s stage presence seemed renewed when he and the band returned for a brief encore, his bolstered confidence shining through the already-radiant “Mr. Blue Sky.” As the song’s lyrics affirm, we’ll remember the maestro this way: operating on his own plane of futuristic rock, miles removed from even his most innovative contemporaries.

Once “The Over and Out Tour” finishes, and Lynne presumably hangs up his guitar, that slice of the stratosphere will likely remain unoccupied for many years to come, awaiting the next great sonic explorer.
