Austin City Limits 2024: Planning Your Trip

Cruise America provides Austin RV rentals for those who want to explore the many sites and attractions of Austin and the surrounding area.

While in the city, there are a myriad of things to see and do. You can park your rental motorhome in one of the many beautiful RV parks in or near the city, and explore what the town has to offer. For instance, you could visit Lady Bird Lake, formerly known as Town Lake. This is a section of the Austin Lake that flows for five miles through the center of Austin. There are boats, paddleboards and kayak rentals available, as well as 10 miles of hiking trails. These trails provide exquisite views of the lake, as well as the Austin Skyline. As a note of interest, the lake was named after former First Lady of the United States, Lady Bird Johnson (a longtime resident of Austin), honoring the time and effort she dedicated to beautifying the lake, and incorporating a recreational trail system around the lake’s shoreline. This is just a small sample of what Austin has to offer, but there is a whole different country outside of the dynamic city.

Just west of Austin there is a large region of broken escarpments and valleys. They are referred to as the Hill Country or Edwards Plateau. This area makes for a great excursion in your Cruise America motorhome.

Here are a few ideas for some of these "Hill Country" day trips from the Austin area:

Lake Travis – This is a picturesque impoundment of the Colorado River, colorized with the aquamarine water against the limestone bluffs that surround it. One of the best routes to see the lake is to take the FM 2769 (off of FM 620) to Volente. Be prepared, as there is some pretty white knuckle mountain driving. While up at the lake, you can watch the sun go down while dining at the Oasis Restaurant, known for the beautiful views of the sunsets. In addition There are several parks along the lake, such as Pace Bend and Mansfield Dam, where you will find great swimming and boating.

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Region – Once you have finished your Lake Travis excursion, you can continue along the scenic FM 1620 to Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. This beautiful 27,500-acre refuge is the habitat of endangered birds, such as the golden checked warbler and the black-capped vireo. You will wind your motorhome around the juniper-covered hills, taking in scenery that can be considered nothing less than breathtaking. If you continue your westward journey, you will come to a beautiful recreational area called Inks Lake State Park. This lake emerges from the Edwards Aquifer, which is why the water is so crystal clear. You will also arrive at another very large Hill Country lake called Buchanan. The public use areas of the refuge (Doeskin Ranch on FM 1174 in Bertram, Warbler Vista 5-miles west of Lago Vista on FM 1431, and the Shin Oak Observation Deck on FM 1869 near Liberty Hill) are open every day from sunrise to sunset, and they are free of charge. You should probably know that pets are not allowed on the refuge grounds.

Llano – Should you travel down highway 29, you will come to a town called Llano, which lays claim to being the "Deer Capital of Texas." Needless to say, you will most likely come across deer in this neck of the woods, especially if you are staying the night in your motorhome. Residents will tell you that there are times when this community, along with neighboring communities, is literally blanketed by the gentle, serene animals. While there, you may want to eat at the well known Cooper's BBQ Restaurant, which, as the name implies, specializes in delicious barbeque. There you are sure to get a tongue-pleaser of a meal. (You should probably know that they are open every day of the year except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.) Before leaving this town, be sure to stop along the river for a great view of the Roy Inks Bridge, an old iron trestle bridge that crosses over the Llano River.

The resurgence of campervans has revamped the American road trip and made “home” wherever you park for the night. One campervan rental company, Cabana , has taken the trend to new heights, remodeling vans so they’re outfitted with all the comforts of home — including real beds, indoor kitchens, showers, toilets, and a kitchen table with a view. The rental company, which has differentiated itself with high-tech van buildouts and trip-planning help , just expanded its fleet to Austin, Texas, where Cabana launched redesigned two-person 2023 Mercedes Sprinter campervans.

“People love the freedom of waking up at the base of a mountain, in the middle of the desert, or alongside the coast — or to pull up to a music festival and have all of your comforts close by,” said Scott Kubly, the CEO and founder of Cabana, in an email to Travel + Leisure . “Outdoor recreation is still at an all-time high — we’re finally learning how much we need connection to the outdoors and to unplug from the grind, and van life is making it easier than ever.” 

Each of Cabana’s modern, high-tech rigs sleeps two people on a real queen-size bed and includes a refrigerator, drinking water, a shower, a toilet, a sink, and a stovetop, along with things like cutlery, pots and pans, towels, and linens. Complimentary coffee, toiletries, and a set of camp chairs elevate the experience, while a cellular Wi-Fi device, a TV, and USB ports make it easier to stay on the road longer. Perhaps most importantly, the vans are equipped with a heater and ceiling fan, making it easy to get out year-round .

In addition to fresh, modern buildouts, Cabana sets itself apart with a trip-planning service that connects travelers with an in-the-know regional itinerary planner who will help plan out the route, book campsites , and offer advice. The add-on service makes road trips simple — even for total newbies — while the vans’ off-grid capabilities expand travelers’ overnight options.

RENTAL QUALIFICATIONS

Renters must be 21 years or older to rent. Rates listed online are for 25 years and older. A valid driver license and valid payment card must be presented at time of pick-up.

International Driver License:  Valid International driver license is required. International renters must provide proof of full coverage insurance valid in the United States. Insurance must be obtained prior to or at the time of rental.

It is our policy to hold reservations up to two hours beyond the scheduled arrival time, subject to published office hours. If you experience delays, please contact the rental office so that they can make their best effort to extend your reservation.

Young Driver Fee:  Minimum Age for any rental is 21. Any renter between the ages of 21-24 will be subject to a $25.00 per day underage fee.

Additional Drivers:

$11.95/day for each additional driver. (Excluding Spouses)

Minimum Age for Additional Drivers:

21-24.All drivers are required to have state minimum liability protection. (Underage fee applies to any driver under the age of 25 no exceptions)

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Credit cards accepts Amex, Discover, MasterCard and Visa Credit card/ Debit card policy:  Debit card must have a Visa or MasterCard logo. Debit card/Credit card and driver’s license must be in same name. Required at time of rental. AVR  will authorize the amount of $200.00 as a security deposit. Unused funds upon return will be credited back to the card. This process may take up to 14 days for a credit to appear back on your account due to bank processing standards

Debit Card Users:

AVR  will authorize an additional $200.00 as a security deposit; and local Renters must provide proof of residency (Current Utility Bill or Pay Stub) . Travelers must provide a copy of their round trip ticket. This process may take up to 14 days for a credit to appear back on your account due to bank processing standards.  Debit cards are not accepted for Full size SUV reservations and rentals.

Prepaid Cards/Personal Checks:

Prepaid cards or personal checks are not accepted as forms of payment.

Cash Users:

We do not accept cash at the locations.

MILEAGE and LOCAL RENTER POLICY

Special mileage restrictions apply to:

Wheel Chair Accessible Vans:  Limited to 150 free miles a day. Additional miles at $0.25/mile per mile.

Cargo Vans: Limited to 100 free miles per day. Additional miles at $0.25/mile

One Way Rentals:   AVR  offers nationwide one way drop offs for a fee. Please contact your renting office for pricing details.

Local Renter Policy:

Local Renters are defined as living within a  120 mile radius  of the renting location.

Credit Card Use Policy: Local Renters will be subject to a $200 deposit in addition to the cost of the rental.

Debit Card Use Policy: Local Renters will be required to provide a utility bill with an address that matches the renters license. Debit Cards will also be subject to a $200 deposit on top of rental charges. If your address has changed or updated, we will accept two bills with your new address that does not match your license.

Local Renter Mileage Policy:

Local renters are subject to a 375 miles per day allowance on all vehicle classes, with a 3,000 mile total mileage cap on the rental.  Miles in excess of 375 per day allowance will be charged at $0.25 per mile. Miles in excess of 3,000 total mileage cap will be charged at  $0.50 cents per mile regardless of length of rental unless authorized in writing by AVR Leadership. 

CANCELLATIONS/DELAYS OR EXTENSIONS

Non-Prepaid Rentals  - Cancellations made more than 48 hours prior to rental are at no charge. Cancellations made within this 48 hour period prior to your rental are subject to a one day rental charge. We ask that you cancel your reservation directly with the rental office and if you reserve on any third party site please be sure to cancel with them to avoid any cancellation fees.

Prepaid Rentals  -  Prepaid Rentals are non refundable , certain exceptions may apply. Please contact customer service. 

Late Returns or Extensions:  Any late returns or extensions will be subject to a higher daily or weekly rate, plus a $25 extension fee. Please check with your renting office if you need to extend your rental.

After Hour Drop Off:  A $20.00-$50.00 one time after hour parking fee will apply if leaving van at rental location after office hours or inside the Airport.

Early Returns 

We don't refund or provide compensation when a vehicle is returned early before their original reservation date. Each reservation rate has a special day requirement for obtaining that rate, therefore we don't offer any refund for the agreed reservation rate. Customers may return the vehicle early at their leisure and will be refunded for any unused coverage or accessory products for the days returned early. 

  INSURANCE AND WAIVER PLANS

Collision Damage Waiver:   CDW  is not insurance and is not mandatory. If you accept  CDW  by your initials on the rental document at the daily rate for each full or partial day that the vehicle is rented to you, and the vehicle is used and operated in accordance with this agreement, we assume responsibility for loss or damage to the rented vehicle, except, if permitted by law, for lost, damaged or stolen keys or remote entry devices, towing or tire service unless related to an accident or recovery of the car if stolen and except for your amount of “responsibility”, if any, specified on the rental document.  CDW  does not cover theft of the vehicle if the keys cannot be produced. Cost of  CDW  depends on the vehicle type and rental location- the exact amount is available at the rental counter.

Deductible Damage Waiver:   DDW  is only available to Renters who carry an existing auto collision policy.  DDW  is not insurance and is not mandatory. If you accept  DDW  by your initials on the rental document at the daily rate for each full or partial day that the vehicle is rented to you, and the vehicle is used and operated in accordance with this agreement, we waive your responsibility for loss or damage to the rented vehicle up to the amount of your applicable primary auto insurance deductible, except, if permitted by law, for lost, damaged or stolen keys or remote entry devices, towing or tire service unless related to an accident or recovery of the car is stolen and except for your amount of “responsibility”, if any, specified on the rental document. In the unfortunate event that you are responsible for damage or collision, In order to validate coverage, you will be required to submit a copy of your primary auto policy’s “declaration” page to  AVR ’s claims department.

Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP) : SLP  is not insurance and is not mandatory. Supplemental Liability Protection ( SLP ) is a secondary protection product that picks up where primary liability (state statutory limits) leaves off… When combined with primary liability coverage,  SLI  provides the renter and any authorized driver up to $300,000 of liability protection for third party claims due to bodily injury or property damage. In order for  SLP  to pay on a claim, however, the state statutory limits must first at least be satisfied. The policy will respond only after all other available insurance has been exhausted.

Exclusions:  SLP  is not available in the State of OR, NV or GA. SLP does not cover damage or injury to the renter, authorized drivers, family or household members, or passengers. This coverage may duplicate coverage already provided by insurance policies applicable to the renter. Airport Van Rental is not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of your existing insurance policies, therefore, please contact your personal agent for assistance. This coverage is voided if: the renter or authorized driver violate the terms of the rental contract, including but not limited to, participation in any speed contest, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or driving the vehicle beyond the geographic limitations stated in the agreement; where the driver of the vehicle at the time of accident is not the renter, or authorized driver specifically authorized by Airport Van Rentals as noted in the rental agreement; where the renter obtains the vehicle by fraud or misrepresentation. Coverage does not apply to accidents that occur in Mexico. Coverage is not provided for uninsured or  underinsured  motorist.

Renters Liability Protection (RLP ): RLP  is not insurance and is not mandatory. Renters Liability Protection ( RLP ) affords the renter with liability protection at the policy limits required by the state. This protection will help protect the renter should the renter injure another person in an accident, or damage the property of another while operating the rental vehicle, up to the policy limits.

Exclusions:  RLP  is not available in the State of OR, NV or GA.  RLP  does not cover damage or injury to the renter, authorized drivers, family or household members, or passengers. Airport Van Rental is not qualified to evaluate the adequacy of your existing insurance policies, therefore, please contact your personal agent for assistance. Mexico Insurance:   AVR  Van Rental offers the purchase of Mexico Insurance, on vehicle rentals. Mexico insurance required to be purchased at the  AVR  location 72 hours prior to travel to Mexico. Rates start at $65.00 per calendar day including tax. Travel is allowed to cities in Mexico close to California and Arizona border. NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA.

RSA:  Roadside Assistance ( RSA ): If you purchase our Roadside Service Assistance ( RSA ) we will waive all, or a portion of, the cost of a roadside assistance service call up to the amount of $400.00 per incident. You may purchase  RSA  at $5.99 per rental day. Benefits include emergency road service towing, winching, jump start, flat tire change, lockout service, and emergency fuel delivery. Some restrictions apply ask for a copy of an  RSA  brochure at the rental counter. Roadside assistance is available to all customers at the renter’s expense should the  RSA  option be declined.  RSA  does not cover the loss or damage to any vehicle or its equipment.

Tolls: TOLLS SERVICE: Under the toll program, customers have several options to not use the OnePass® service. Customers may use their own personal transponder in the vehicle to pay for any tolls. Customers may pay in cash. Customers may avoid toll roads altogether. Customers should know that some toll roads are now cashless, and no longer accept cash payments. Customers accepting the OnePass® Unlimited Plan agree to pay $12.95 per each day of the Rental, for which all tolls will be covered with no additional charges. If customer declines and still incurs a toll not paid by the Customer, then Customer agrees to pay the amount of each toll plus a $15.00 Daily Usage Fee for each day tolls are incurred, up to a maximum of $75.00 per rental agreement. Tolls will be charged at the highest posted, non-discounted cash rate. These charges will typically occur within 3-6 weeks after the rental has been completed and will be charged by our toll administrator GTS (Global Toll Services) with whom we will share your rental information with.

HAND CONTROLS

AVR  will provide hand controls at no additional charge. A 72 Hrs. advanced notice is required and renter needs to contact the location directly by phone prior to rental.

CLEANING FEES

$400 cleaning fee will be added to any vehicle that has been smoked in, pet hair, or excessively dirty.

Bring copy of non-profit organization and Tax exempt Id.

PARKING TICKET AND TOLL VIOLATIONS

• You agree to be responsible for payment of all tolls, fines and violations and authorize  AVR to release my rental and debit/ charge card information to Global Tolls Service (GTS) for the exclusive purpose of processing billing and/or payment of tolls, parking or traffic fines, fees penalties, notices and/or an administrative fee up to $55.00 for EACH infraction or toll, violation or evasion incurred during my rental period.
