2010 Dodge Journey random horn honking please help!

  • Add to quote

We bought a 2010 Journey about 4 months ago and just a few weeks ago, the horn/alarm started to randomly go off. Even if you dont arm the alarm, no matter what we try it keeps doing it. we have taken it in to 2 different shops now and all they can do is reset the software in the vehicle. they said there are no error codes coming up. and resetting it helps for a few days then it starts up again. and it is not operator error lol. its not us accidently hitting the panic button or anything. tried moving it to different parking spaces to see if maybe there was some kind of interference. no help. my wife and I are stationed in Germany so its kind of hard to just run down to the dealer, but there are a couple of Dodge certified shops here, due to the amount of soldiers being able to purchase american made cars through the exchange. so i've had to resort to removing the negative battery cable to get it to shut up and not piss off the neighbors. that helps too...... for a little bit. ANY HELP would be appreciated!! Thank you

This might not help much, but it might be another cause. On Allpar I read where a poster's wife forgot where she parked her car so she hit the panic button. The only problem was it set off about 10 cars' alarms (including hers). Needless to say, she never did that again.

ive actually had that experience with certain gm products. It happens a lot when i get rental cars and you do the unlock door scan and click method to try and find you car. id say 50% of the time it winds up setting off another car's alarm somewhere in the garage. my guess is someone with electronic key seems to be sending the alarm code to your car when they unlock/lock their car. try asking the dealer if they can change the code on your car. or I guess you could just disable the whole system and then leave it alone or add an engine immobilizer instead. I figure you're on a military base so I assume car theft is a pretty rare occurrence so you'll probably be fine without the alarm

I also did some poking around on the net for you and it seems if your battery starts to die in the car or in the remote the alarm could go off. try replacing both another possibility is if someone did a bad job of installing an immobilizer on your car (i know i suggest one earlier) then that could also cause a problem. One guy suggested something to do with sensors getting tripped. It seems that the best answer overall is to just have your alarm system reprogrammed

I'm still working with the dealer to address this issue and hoping the fix will work. From what I understand, the issue is with the fuse cluster under the hood and may be a 200ish dollar fix.

Horn honks randomly, all hours of the day and night. Mechanic has tried multiple fixes but no luck. Doesnt matter what's fixed or replaced it keeps doing it. Dealer says they have no idea whats with the horn blowing randomly, so I've resorted to removing the 2 fuses that power the horn. But issue now is I have no horn to alert other drivers of my driving intentions or to warn them of their driving intentions for example their backing out and I'm in their blind area, merging traffic to signal your letting them in etc. Its dangerous to not have a working horn (pretty sure car can't be safetied without working horn) yet the dealer doesn't have an incling what causes this problem. This car needs multiple recalls to fix multiple problems. I've always been a huge Disge fan, but after this car I feel I would not invest in Dodge again, unfortunately they should listen to the customers before they loose all loyal brand customers.

I have read a lot of complaints about this issue. Will not purchase another Dodge product - there have been plenty of other issues that I can't even list. It's a good thing I have friends that are mechanics - they all say the same thing - the Dodge Journey is one vehicle they see a lot.

My wife has a 2010 Dodge Journey that has developed a rather annoying problem as of late. The car horn will randomly start honking, anytime of day or night. Sometimes it will just chirp a little, few seconds maybe. Other times it's an all out lay on your horn type of experience. It seems to have a mind of it's own. At first when it would happen it would do it's thing and then not happen again for some time, weeks even months sometimes. Lately though it is happening several times each day( we're becoming a big hit in our new neighborhood!). After reading other post on various sites I decided to pull the two 10 amp fuses designated for the horn, Was reluctant due to safety, but was willing to risk to keep our sanity. Apparently Dodge does have a serious problem on their hands with this TPIM thing. Hope they will find it in themselves to address it.

This is a major safety hazard and there should be a recall. I can't drive without a horn but with the crazy world that we live in I can't have it going off in traffic and people think i'm blowing it at them. If Dodge doesn't step up and fix this problem, I will never buy another and make sure others know about this problem.

Had it towed to the dealer, they said the reason the horn was blaring like that was because the rear brake lamp went out and it needed replaced. $200 later, the problem is not fixed. It even effects the hazard lights from time to time. Still can't put the horn fuses back in, but the battery doesn't drain with them out. Very irritating. Definitely ready to trade this sucker in.

bought 2010 Dodge Journey in Dec 2015, and exactly May 28, 2016 I start having issued with stupid horn! it goes off randomly whether its parked, driving, or not even turned on! Went online to see what the problem was, and found zero solutions so I had to disconnect the horn and drive around like that. NOT SAFE BY THE WAY!! finally a guy at autozone recommended checking the battery, we did, and even got a new one. Seemed to work until today, June 4, now my horn keeps going off,. UGH

The horn was going off randomly while both driving and turned off and parked in the driveway overnight. The car has also turned off while driving and forced me to pull over on a busy highway and restart. This problem makes the check engine light stay on which means I cannot use my command start. You would think something like this would warrant a recall as it could have huge ramifications if it were to happen in dense traffic.

After reading online, this appears to be a problem with many of Chryslers' vehicle 2007-2014, WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL? Right now, this is just annoying, but it could lead to other issues from what I understand!

I have read many other complaints from people with the same problem on the Dodge Journey! The Dealer said it will cost $105 for Diagnostic Testing and another $500 for repairs if it is the Horn Assembly Module. It will be more if the car also needs a Computer Update! This is not right!! There is a definite problem, and it should be addressed by the Manufacturer!

The horn on my vehicle just started to go off out of nowhere. I read about a lot of complaints on this vehicle, yet no recall. I called my local Chrysler dealership and set up a future appointment to get it diagnosed, which will cost me $105 to get it just diagnosed. They did give me the phone number to file a complaint with Chrysler so that it could potential be issued for a recall. EVERYONE THAT HAS THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO CALL 1 800 992 1997 and file a complaint. I spoke to a women named Elizabeth who was wonderful and said that there hasn't been any complaints filed. I find that hard to believe but it makes sense because I had a difficult time trying to find a number to contact them to file my complaint. Please everyone call the number above and have your vin number and mileage on your vehicle when making the complaint. The more we get, hopefully they will recall it. Also if you removed the fuses in your car so your horn won't go off, it might be illegal in some states to not have a working horn, just something to keep in mind. Thank you.

2010 Journey randomly honks

  • Add to quote

I got a 2010 Journey and the last few months it starts randomly honking, doesn’t matter if it’s sitting or driving. The radio and back up camera started working when it wasn’t too, not sure if they are related. Idk where to start

2010 journey horn goes off

It randomly honks like my 4 year old playing with it, haven’t seen the lights flash or anything to make me think it’s security related. I’ll have to check the radio code when I get home

If it was the security (VTS)-related, the honks would be rhythmic. If they are sporadic and intermittent, it may be a shorting horn pad switch (short to ground)? I had cars that would sit in the sun and begin blowing the horn. If they were parked in the shade, it was cool or overcast, it wouldn't happen. The plastic would distort enough because of the temperature change. Temporarily unplugging the horn pad would help prove this.

berg621 said: I’ll try that, we have all sorts of crazy weather in Michigan right now. Got a picture of the radio View attachment 81281 Click to expand...

Journey's Horn randomly honks

Horn button would be my first thought for a culprit. Might be worth a look to see if any harnesses are shorting to ground under the carpet. Had this (and few other weird things) happen on a Grand Caravan from the same era. The harness under the cargo area floor had rubbed through and a few wires were shorting to ground.

Thanks guys for all your help, I can’t wait for a day off so I can get it figured out for sure

I also own a '10 Journey with the same issue, and am also a Michigander. Started out with horn randomly honking, then months later the headlights and tail lights would come on and go out in conjunction with wipers turning on and off only while running or parked with key in run position. Then new battery started dying. Finally I started hearing the built in relays in the TIPM clicking on and off with everything off- no key, nobody in the vehicle. As a master mechanic, I have come to the conclusion that the TIPM (otherwise known as underhood fuse box) is shorting internally, a known common problem with Chryslers.

2010 Dodge Journey horn randomly beeps

my horn randomly beeps

Most likely horn switch, or the wires from the horn button are shorting out in the steering column clock-spring.

Horn Assembly problems of the 2010 Dodge Journey - part 1

166 problems related to horn assembly have been reported for the 2010 Dodge Journey. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2010 Dodge Journey based on all problems reported for the 2010 Journey.

1 Horn Assembly problem

We purchased our 2010 Dodge Journey from an auction. Right away there were all sorts of electronic issues with various bells & whistles. Most of these were solved once we purchased a new fob & had it programmed. However, most importantly, the horn will blow without touching the steering wheel. It will blow while the vehicle is running and when the vehicle is off, does not matter. My husband had to disconnect the horn under the hood in order to get it to stop. We have taken it to an independent service center and the mechanic could not find why the horn will not stop blowing. I discussed this issue with the dealership and they indicated the vehicle needs an update, however, after much researching on the web many many people have had the update completed at the dealership and the horn issues started again 2 weeks later, many much sooner. Our vehicle has not been inspected by anyone else. Also, there are no warning lamps in regards to the horn that have come on. We are looking into having a separate horn installed on the vehicle, due to the safety issue. Dodge needs to have a recall in regards to this horn issue that could cost someone their life, it's quite unbelievable they have not done so. (see below- "approximate date this incident occurred", our issue is ongoing, we bought the vehicle on 08-14-2021. ).

2 Horn Assembly problem

Horn randomly started going off while while stationary/off. No one touching keys or vehicle. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

3 Horn Assembly problem

The horn is beeping when not in vehicle. Also when driving it randomly beeps.

4 Horn Assembly problem

On our way to the coast my headlight went out completely and had to use only to day lights and fog light no headlight would come on they would only flicker. I was still a hour from the coast and 3 hours from home in the middle of the night. The horn goes off randomly and is annoying same with the wind shield wipers. They go at random and are not needed. The horn is when I am stationary. The wipers go at anytime moving or stopped. The car acts possessed. I am scared to drive at night due to the headlights functionality I had my nephew with me when I had the headlights stop working and I will not put him in danger again. This needs fixed.

5 Horn Assembly problem

The horn begins to sound on its own and at short and/or long burts and a combination of both while driving or parked all hours of the day. There is no way to stop this. This can cause severe accidents!.

6 Horn Assembly problem

The horn on our 2010 Dodge Journey just started going off all by itself while my wife was stopped at a light. The driver in front of her proceeded to get out of their vehicle and point their finger and use some foul language towards my wife. To us this is a huge safety issue and upon doing some research our car is not the only one that this has happened to. We contacted fca and their answer was it's out of warranty. Really my wife could of been injured or even shot at. Please help us get this resolved before it's too late and someone gets hurt or even killed. Right now we have to drive around in this car without a horn because I had to take the fuses out and if that isn't a safety issue I don't know what is. This is going to be about a $500. 00 fix which we do not have.

7 Horn Assembly problem

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle horn randomly start to honk while on and off independently. The air bag and tire warning lights illuminated. The contact concerned for her safety. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately. 171,000. Aw.

8 Horn Assembly problem

Horn honks randomly 24 hours a day regardless of weather temperature and/or vehicle on or off.

9 Horn Assembly problem

I was driving down the highway and my car stalled completely. I had to coast to the side of the highway and try to restart my car. Also, have issues with battery being drained of all power, had to replace battery. My horn randomly beeps whether driving or not. Alarm system will sound all hours of night, had to pull fuse. Since then the hazard lights randomly blink off and on. The day after the engine stalled on me, now have a check engine light on and code is throwing out its the erg valve system and gasket. . . These are big issues and need to be repaired. I'm not happy with these issues and Dodge needs to do something about it.

10 Horn Assembly problem

Started with random horn blowing. I had to take fuses out of tipm to stop this. About 1 year later the battery died. Rwould not take a jump. Had car towed to a garage and eplaced the battery, it was dead again 3 weeks later. It would not take a jump. Had car towed to a different garage, they said I needed a new battery. The garage managed to jump start the car and I drove it home with many dash lights blinking and the power/engine limping along. This is apparently a widespread problem with the tipm. This should be a recall.

11 Horn Assembly problem

Vehicles horn goes off randomly; while driving, stationary, while it's on or off, hot or cold. Relays are in good condition.

12 Horn Assembly problem

I just bought a 2010 Dodge Journey and I had to take the 2 fusses out bc the horn keeped going off by its self.

13 Horn Assembly problem

For a a few years now I have dealing with horn honking on its own. In the middle of the night, while driving, while parked randomly. I've been trying to solve the issue and nothing works. I read lots of complaint with the same issue on Dodgeforum. Com but again no solution. On 2/17/20 I nearly had a bad accident because I dont have a horn, I've been taking out the fuse because of the random honking while driving. This has happened to me more than once almost getting into accidents because if horn issue. I commute 2 hours a day for work sometimes more and do not feel safe using car but have no choice. For so many years no solution to problem by Dodge.

14 Horn Assembly problem

For no reason the car battery discharges the horn sounds by itself.

15 Horn Assembly problem

When u turn key in ignition it doesn't always start you have to keep trying,,,it will go days without starting then start for several days have had to tow unit twice windows come down by themselves when vehicle not running when u go to put it in drive it won't move out of park unless you turn off engine and restart vehicle horn goes off whenever it wants too car doesn't always unlock when you use remote or relock itself.

16 Horn Assembly problem

Horn blew intermittently at first when shutting doors, and occasionally for no reason. Windows would go down part way when doors were shut. Ignition would sometimes just click click when key is turned, wipers would move when not engaged to be on. Battery would go complexly dead for no reason and then be ok for a month or two and then do it again. Had to disconnect the horn a few years ago as it would not stop going off. Has been in to kayer Chrysler, Dodge service several times and they could not find issue. They just called and said they founsd. Short in the main electrical component and it will cost $1100plus for part and up to $200 to install. We have had these issues since we bought it. Oh yeh heat and air on passenger side quit working a few winters ago, and the doors fill with water in every rain storm. Park on a hill after a rain and doors will drain for hours. We have friends that have bought Journeys and say they have no problems really. Can't believe there s not a recall for such a mess. Oh yes and occasionally it will not shift all gears and I need to pull ver on highway, turn off ignition and restart and it usually works. Wish I weren't retired on limited income, I would get rid of it before I get killed. Iyt only has 1000,000 miles. Hopefully it matures soon,1.

17 Horn Assembly problem

When turning one day my horn honked by itself. I thought my hand slipped and accidentally honked the horn then a few days later while driving straight I heard it again. It honked twice by itself, causing the person in front of me to slam on their brakes and almost caused a crash. That same day I heard it while the vehicle was off. I was I side and my horn honked at least 15 times by itself. I knew it wasn't my keys because my key fob had been disconnected from my car.

18 Horn Assembly problem

My 1010 Dodge Journey horn intermittently honks non-stop. No pattern to the honking. Does it when engine is off, on, or when driving. Chrysler/Dodge dealership had car from 8 am to 5:30 pm. Removed steering wheel, rerouted wome wires. Envoice said said 'referred to star case s150800292. Checked key fobs, one tested good, the other was intermittent at times'. They found no problem. Said for he to advise them if it happens again. Paid $116. 13 for diagnosis, but found no problem as to why horn would honk randomly. Drove home, parked car in garage, no honking. Next morning went into garage & horn started blasting on & off intermittently. Had to pull left & right horn relays (once again) from fuse box. Still no answers, still no horn. With road rage the way it is today, I find this to be a major safety issue, that should have been addressed years ago. I've found many frustrated 2010 Dodge Journey owners on a Dodge forum, with same problem, and no answers. Paying a lot of money to Dodge dealers, with no results or answers.

19 Horn Assembly problem

As I was driving I tired to turn the wheel to go around a small curve on a city street and it wouldn't turn. I could feel the car staring to die. As I put the car in park to turn the ignition off the break pedal would not work. I was able to turn the car off and restart without any issues. Later my horn started honking on its own. And continues to honk randomly. Also the alarm randomly went off once yesterday. Today it has randomly honked all afternoon.

20 Horn Assembly problem

Horn starts beeping when parked. This is not happening all the time but occasionally at night when parked in our driveway or garage when we are sleeping and the horn chirping wakes us up. When I check on it it is silent. When parked in parking lot I was told my horn was going off and when I went out to check it was no longer making any noise. This past week while parked in my driveway, it started honking constantly to the point I had to remove the 2 fuses for it to stop.

21 Horn Assembly problem

When u turn key in ignition it doesn't always start you have to keep trying,,, windows come down by themselves when vehicle not running when u go to put it in drive it won't move out of park unless you turn off engine and restart vehicle horn goes off whenever it wants too car doesn't always unlock when you use remote or relock itself all these things happen when not in motion this all happens at different times in the last few months we have paid to get it reprogrammed.

22 Horn Assembly problem

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle horn began to operate independently without warning. The horn eventually stopped ceased to blow; however, the failure would continue to occur intermittently. The contact decided to unplug the horn for 8 months, as of recent, he reactivated the horn and the failure returned. The vehicle had not been taken to a dealer to be serviced and the manufacturer had not been notified. The failure mileage was unknown. Jo.

23 Horn Assembly problem

The vehicle continuously stalls while I'm driving. I have not driven on the highway because it's a major safety issue. The horn goes off crazily sometimes while parked. And, recently while driving locally in my neighborhood the car over heated. The engine light comes on off , and sometimes I have to wait a while before I can get the car to start. I have brought it to a private mechanic on numerous occasions and he's unsure of what's going on and questions recall. I have spent thousands of dollars and it's been a frustrating Journey with this Journey.

24 Horn Assembly problem

Electrical issues: first occurrence: alarm system kept going off even when the key was in ignition, only way to solve issue was to unhook horn. Second occurrence: passenger side window will not roll down with power buttons on passenger side, however will roll down from driver side. Although every once in a while it will out of the blue work. Third occurrence: without pressing on the key fob if anything rubs up against the key fob it unlocks car just lightly brushing skin against it but pressing the unlock will not unlock it. Fourth occurrence windows are rolling down on their own. At least once a day I will look outside and the windows are rolled down half way and its been 22 degree temps outside so I know for a fact they are not being rolled down intentionally, ive witnessed on one occasion them actually rolling down on their own.

25 Horn Assembly problem

While driving the horn started honking on it's own. Stopped for a few hours then started blaring on it's own while car was parked and off for a solid hour. Had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop until I can find the fuses. Remove the fuses for a while and it stops. Replace fuses and it starts doing it again. Battery went dead because of not being able to hear the alarm going off when the door handle was pulled while car was locked.

26 Horn Assembly problem

The horn just randomly sounds off without any warning or the car is on. It does it all night long. It will beep while driving, in park, turned off, or on. Not justification reason as to why. Had to remove fuses to shut it off. It started Sunday, June 23rd and has continued daily up until removing fuses this morning.

27 Horn Assembly problem

The horn blows on its own at any time. It does not matter if I am driving or if the car is turned off. It does this at all hours of the day/night. Pushing the car alarm button or panic button does not stop it from blowing. I have my local mechanic check and he states the wiring is fine so the problem must be coming from the steering column area where you push to blow the horn. The only way to make it stop was to remove the two fuses for the horn.

28 Horn Assembly problem

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the horn was sounding off intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The dealer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

29 Horn Assembly problem

Takata recall I am making a complaint on my 2010 Dodge Journey my horn goes off several times a day for no apparent reason it's been doing this for a few months. I also had to replace 2 actuators within 6 months and now its making the same clicking noise as before. These cars need to be recalled.

31 Horn Assembly problem

2010 Dodge Journey with 20k miles, horn goes off randomly, sitting in garage or driveway, idle, not running. Key fobs are on the kitchen counter. Horn beeps 1 - 3 times, not steady or uniform. I've had it at the dealership 5x, they can't find anything wrong and of course it doesn't happen there. They've replaced the wiring harness from door to dash on drivers side and put a heat shrink tube on a wire + diagnostics for $1,000. I find similar complaints on the web but no resolutions. The Dodge "star" team and their customer care line have not been able to help at all. (zeigler Dodge in downers grove, IL. ).

32 Horn Assembly problem

My vehicle was parked outside my home and the horn started blowing all by itself. This continued no matter what I tried (pressing the key fob buttons, pressing the horn manually, and starting the vehicle). We finally had to take the fuse out to get it to stop. The horn blew so much the neighbors called the police thinking that something was wrong.

So, I am a Technician at a Chevrolet dealer who used to be a Mopar dealer. We had a customer come in with a 2010 Dodge Journey SXT and they had a complaint of the horn sounding when they turn the left turn signal on and proceed to turn and the horn sounds. We are starting with putting a clock spring in it and see if that fixes it. On another note, I as well have a 2010 Dodge Journey SXT and our alarm starting sounding at 2 am. At first i thought it was the neighborhood we lived in, because honestly its not all flowers and rainbows. Then we stayed with my mother for some of her health issues, and we noticed that the car did it again, and there are rarely ever any break ins out in the country because, hey who wants to get shot and thrown in the woods to fed the wildlife. About a month or two later, it did it again, in the same area. So I know nobody is trying to break in. I have been reading on the forms for a couple of days now and i have not seen any recent posts about this issue for a while, I'm just trying to figure out what the deal is, and it will make my wife happy if there is a fix for this common Journey issue.
