Masantol: The next top tourism destination in Pampanga

Masantol town , recognized as one of the most historic and religious municipality located at the Southmost part of province, continue to progress and boast its potential as pride of Pampanga.

Known for its rich seafood industry, Masantol has been a famed exporter of various aquatic delicacies such as shrimps, prawns, crabs, crablets, clams, tilapia and other kinds of fish.

Second termer Mayor Danilo Guintu even created the Seafoods Festival celebrated during summer season to highlight its affluent market.

“It is our way of promoting our products as we are recognized with the highest supply of seafoods not only in Pampanga but the whole of Central Luzon,” he stressed.

The municipality is also batting to be the next tourism destination in Pampanga as it is set to showcase the beauty of Pampanga River through a river cruise.

Inspired by the floating restaurants in Loboc River in Bohol, Guintu said that environmental cruise will feature the almost five kilometer rio de grande leading to the mouth of Manila Bay.

During the cruise, visitors will be able to experience touring along the river while enjoying native food on board small a bancas or floating restaurant.

“Home-grown foods and delicacies like our seafoods, crab paste and the well-known buro or fermented fish will be served on our floating restaurants,” he said.

The local government is also eyeing a conduct of cultural shows which will showcase some of the ethnic dances and activies of Kapampangans, he added.

And aside from its aquatic treasures, Masantol is also becoming a home for thousands of migratory birds which visit the town’s coastal line.

During summer season, different kinds of migratory birds are seen flocking along the harbors of Masantol, which is considered the borderline of Pampanga River and Manila Bay.

To explore such beauty, the local government here will also soon offer bird watching tours alongside the river cruise during specific times.

A platform of the perfect spot to view the migratory birds is also planned to be installed for the pleasure of bird enthusiasts and tourists.

“ We are currently developing and enriching our river in preparation for our biggest tourism project yet, ” he said.

The Municipality of Masantol is a 2 nd class municipality in the coastal province of Pampanga located in Region III or Central Luzon. 

The Municipality of Masantol is nearly bounded by the town of Macabebe (Which used to be a former part of the municipality). It is widely known to be in the southmost town in the province of Pampanga. It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Macabebe; to the east by the metropolises of Calumpit and Hagonoy in Bulacan; to the west by Macabebe; and to the south by some areas of Macabebe and Manila Bay.

The Municipality of Masantol was named “Masantol” because of the abundant santol fruits and santol trees that used to grow in the area.

The municipality was named after a fruit tree ‘Santol’, because there was a production of santol trees in the area, or because the town of Masantol was where santol fruits were being traded massively. 

A myth about how the town acquired its name ‘Masantol’ goes like this: Once, there was a Spanish missionary who arrived in the town of Masantol for the first time around.  Upon his arrival at a corner store on a roadside, he halted while driving his horse-driven vehicle, and asked the storekeeper what’s the place called. A middle-aged woman who was a merchant heard the Spanish missionary.  However, the merchant assumed that the missionary was inquiring about the name of the fruit she was selling, she immediately answered while speaking in a broken Spanish language, “Padre, todos dulce Masantol.”

The Spanish missionary brought out a pencil and a small diary from his pocket and wrote down the word ‘Mas santol, ’  about the name of the area he visited. Then, the area flourished with santol trees, and santol fruits were in season when the priest visited the place.’

Tarik Sulayman rejected to join forces with the Spaniards and consequently carried out an attack opposing the Spanish troops of Miguel López de Legazpi during the Battle of Bankusay Channel on June 3, 1571, was a native ruler from the area of Masantol.

However, the troops of the Macabebes were beaten, and the Masantol native leader, Tarik Sulayman was killed in the battle. Therefore, this conquest empowered the Spaniards to introduce themselves throughout the city and its neighboring towns.

San Miguel de Masantol was the original name of the town and was once included in the town of Macabebe, 3 of the town’s leading founders- Manuel Fajardo, Gregorio Bautista, and Juan Lacap – filed a preposition on June 26, 1877, to split-up the barrios of Bebe, Bulacus, Caingin, and Nigui from Macabebe thus establishing a new Spanish pueblo named San Miguel. 

The new Spanish pueblo was launched on the 1 st of May 1878-, and permitted by Spanish Governor-General Domingo Moriones y Murillo. On November 30, 1893, under a Royal Decree, the Catholic Parish of San Miguel was officially recognized. Momentarily, it came to be identified as San Miguel Masantol, until common usage returned it to the original name.

The town of Masantol once again became a constituent of Macabebe on July 26, 1904. Nevertheless, Masantol was once more reinstated as a separate independent municipality in 1907, and this continued up to the present day. 

The Municipality of Masantol is subdivided into 26 barangays and 2 independent sitio.

Festivals 

Seafood festival .

The celebration is held every 1 st of May and aims to promote the seafood industry of Masantol. 

Palapat Festival

The celebration is held every 11 th of October at Barangay Bulacus. The festival is a celebration of abundant mangroves or palapat in Masantol.

Batalla San Miguel Arkangel (Apung Igue)

Celebration of all Masantoleños honoring Saint Michael the Archangel on May 8 th . 

Battalla Santo Niño 

Festival held every last Sunday of January honoring Santo Niño at Barangay Santo Niño .

Batalla Santa Monica

Festival held at Barangay Santa Monica (Caingin) every 4 th of May.

Batalla San Roque de Montpelier (Apung Duque)

The festival is held 15th ,16th, and 17th of August at Barangay Bebe Matua honoring Saint Roch de Montpelier.

Batalla San Roque (Apung Duque)

The festival held every 3 rd or 4 th Sunday of April at Sittio Bebe Arabia, Barangay Bebe Anac, and Barangay Bebe Matua. 

Fiesta de San Nicolas (Apung Culas) 

 The festival is held every 12 th of May and the 10 th of September at Barangay San Nicolas honoring St Nicholas.

Feast of the Holy Rosary 

The festival is held every 2 nd Saturday of October in Barangay Bulacus. 

Batalla de Santa Lucia (Apung Lucia) 

 The festival is held every 13 th of December at Barangay Santa Lucia Wakas, Santa Lucia Matua, and Santa Lucia Anac.

Batalla de San Agustin (Apung Gustin)

The festivity is held every 28 th of August at Barangay San Agustin (Caingin) honoring St. Augustine of Hippo, 

Limbun at Libad or Labas Larawan (Celebration of the Saints) 

The festival is held in each barrio/barangay celebrating their patron saint once a week in January.

Landmark and Attraction

Widely known as “Masantol Church” was the last parish church established buy the Augustinians Friars. The Masantol Church was founded in 1894.

Masantol, (Kapampangan :Balen ning Masantol) officially the Municipality of Masantol, is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Pampanga, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 57,063 people.

The town is named after the santol trees that used to grow abundantly in the area.

Masantol is almost surrounded by the municipality of Macabebe (For it was once a former part of the town). It is known to be the southernmost town in the province of Pampanga. It is bounded to the north by the municipality of Macabebe; to the east by the municipalities of Calumpit and Hagonoy in Bulacan; to the west by Macabebe; and to the south by some parts of Macabebe and Manila Bay.

The town got its name from the fruit tree, either because there was a proliferation of santol trees in the area, or because the town was where santol fruits were heavily bartered (Kapampangans being fond of ‘sinigang’ dish).

A legend of how the town got its name goes like this: ‘A Spanish missionary came to the town for the first time. Upon reaching a roadside corner store, he parked his horse-driven vehicle and inquired from the store keeper the name of the place. A middle-aged woman vendor, believing that the Spanish priest was asking for the name of the fruits she was selling, readily responded in broken Spanish language, Padre, todos dulce Masantol. The priest took from his pocket a pencil and a small diary and wrote down the word mas santol, referring to the name of the place he has visited. At the time, the locality abounded with santol trees, and santol fruits were in season when the priest visited the place.’

Tarik Sulayman was an indigenous leader from the Masantol area who refused to ally with the Spaniards and therefore mounted an attack against the Spanish forces of Miguel López de Legazpi during the Battle of Bangkusay Channel on June 3, 1571. The Macabebe forces were defeated, and Tarik Sulayman himself was killed. Consequently, this victory enabled the Spaniards to establish themselves throughout the city and its neighboring towns.

Originally named San Miguel de Masantol and a part of the town of Macabebe, three of the town’s leading patriarchs – Manuel Fajardo, Gregorio Bautista, and Juan Lacap – filed a motion on June 26, 1877, to separate the barrios of Bebe, Bulacus, Caingin and Nigui from Macabebe thereby creating a new Spanish pueblo called San Miguel. This new pueblo was approved by Spanish Governor General Domingo Moriones y Murillo and was inaugurated on May 1, 1878. On November 30, 1893, the Catholic Parish of San Miguel was formally acknowledged through a Royal Decree.[5] For a while it came to be known San Miguel Masantol, until popular usage reverted it to the original name.

On July 26, 1904, Masantol once more became part of Macabebe. However, in 1907, Masantol was again reinstated as a separate independent municipality and this lasted up to the present.

On January 7, 2008, one person drowned, another missing and 40 others were injured due to electric shocks, when a live cable hit the floating pagoda boat in the fluvial festival of Virgen La Purisima Concepcion at Barangay Alauli.

Masantol is politically subdivided into 26  barangays  and 2 independent/dependent  barrios .

Masantol , Province of Pampanga

Masantol is a landlocked municipality in the coastal province of Pampanga .

The municipality has a land area of 48.25 square kilometers or 18.63 square miles which constitutes 2.41% of Pampanga's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 57,990. This represented 2.38% of the total population of Pampanga province, or 0.47% of the overall population of the Central Luzon region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 1,202 inhabitants per square kilometer or 3,113 inhabitants per square mile.

Masantol has 26 barangays as shown in the following table.

The annual regular revenue of Masantol for the fiscal year of 2016 was ₱ 111,730,819.71.

Demographics

The household population of Masantol in the 2015 Census was 57,061 broken down into 11,946 households or an average of 4.78 members per household.

Population by age group

According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in Masantol is 15 to 19 , with 6,302 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is 75 to 79 , with 568 individuals.

Historical population

The population of Masantol grew from 7,076 in 1903 to 57,990 in 2020, an increase of 50,914 people over the course of 117 years. The latest census figures in 2020 denote a positive growth rate of 0.34%, or an increase of 927 people, from the previous population of 57,063 in 2015.

The total number of registered voters or electorate in Masantol for the year 2019 was 39,748, broken down into 19,869 males and 19,879 females.

The municipal center of Masantol is situated at approximately 14° 53' North, 120° 43' East, in the island of Luzon . Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 6.0 meters or 19.7 feet above mean sea level.

There are other activities in Zoocobia as well. Enjoy a camel ride up a hill, go on a thrilling ATV ride, feel the wind on your face while on the zip line, and go on a downhill drive with the gravity car!

Its galleries contain well-preserved memorabilia, dioramas, murals, and interactive displays that will definitely interest the history buff in you.

You don’t need to travel far if you want to learn wakeboarding, just head to the Deca Wakeboard Park in Clark or Pradera Verde in Lubao.

Both wakeboard parks feature various jumps and obstacles that cater to both beginners and expert wakeboarders.

For those without equipment, they offer boards, helmets, and other equipment you can rent, so all you need to do is show up, go on the board, and get soaked!

Museo Ning Angeles used to be the Municipio del Pueblo or the Town Hall of Angeles City until 1998. 

Constructed in 1922, the two-story building stood guard over Angeles City, witnessing its growth and development throughout the decades.

The museum, which opened in 1999, gives a glimpse of Angeles City’s history through its memorabilia display. 

The museum also serves as a venue for art classes, cultural performances, and exhibits of local artists.

The Pamintuan Mansion is a Spanish-era colonial home that has a beautifully preserved architecture and design. 

It is where the first Philippine President, Emilio Aguinaldo, stood to celebrate the first anniversary of Philippine independence from Spain.

Now open to tourists as a museum, the Pamintuan Mansion offers a view of what life was like for one of the influential families in the province.

Wash away your stress by taking a dip at Miyamit Falls in Porac, Pampanga. Reaching this hidden gem at the heart of the province involves a long trek, but the view is worth the sweat.

It’s easy to be mesmerized by the stunning nature view and the sound of the water hitting the rocks as it makes its way down to the pool.

There is no entrance fee to the Miyamit Falls, but you need to secure a permit from the Porac municipal hall.

If you want to try a 3- to 4-hour, 12-course menu of the best of Kapampangan cooking, get reservations at Bale Dutung in Angeles City, one of the best Pampanga restaurants  and tasting menu restaurants near Manila .

Run by Chef Claude Tayag and his wife, Mary Ann, the private dining restaurant offers a perfect venue for quiet, intimate family gatherings.

Due to popular demand, they now also have an Anthony Bourdain menu, inspired by the late chef/travel host/writer’s visit to the restaurant.

As Bale Dutung also serves as the Tayags’ home, the restaurant only opens occasionally to diners. It’s best to check their website for the latest restaurant schedule and call for reservations.

For sightseeing in Pampanga, visit the Candaba Swamp where you see white egrets, Philippine ducks, white-breasted herons, streaked reed-warbler, and other birds.

The swamp has about 32,000 hectares of wetland, which includes freshwater pools, marshes, and grasslands.

Migratory birds usually make the trip to the Candaba Swamp from October to February to escape the harsh winter conditions in China and Russia.

16. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Razon’s Halo-Halo

It’s a simple dessert made with shaved ice, creamy milk, leche flan, macapuno, and saging na saba, but hands down, halo-halo is one of the best desserts in the Philippines.

Razon’s of Guagua shops can be found all over Pampanga, so you can get your halo-halo fix at any time during your trip.

As the terminus of the tragic Bataan Death March in 1942, this train station ruins served as a silent witness to the suffering of Filipino and American soldiers under the Japanese forces right after the fall of Bataan.

Thousands of exhausted and dying prisoners-of-war were loaded into box carts at this station to be sent to Camp O’Donnell in nearby Capas, Tarlac.

Fondly called by locals as Pisambang Maragul (“Big Church”), the Holy Rosary Parish Church is a living church and a national historical site in Angeles, Pampanga.

Construction of the church began in 1877 and was built under the “polo y servicio” labor system, the forced, unpaid labor system for Filipino native men imposed by the Spanish colonial government.
