10 Best Float Trips in Missouri for Beautiful Views and Clear Waters

These scenic float trips in Missouri are perfect for a serene day trip or a days-long excursion.

st louis float trip

When it comes to choosing an outdoor adventure in their home state, Missourians are especially lucky. The Show-Me State is brimming with natural beauty — from caverns and mountains to rivers and waterfalls — and one of the best ways to get amongst it on a hot summer's day is with a float trip, a classic Midwestern warm-weather pastime.

A float trip is exactly as it sounds: You float down a river atop a tube, raft, kayak, or canoe, enjoying the scenery and perhaps knocking back a few beverages along the way (make sure you familiarize yourself with the law before bringing booze onboard, though). There are group float trips — generally alcohol-free — facilitated by outfitters that provide guidance and materials, or you can opt to do it yourself if you're willing to do some planning (the route, plus entry and exit points). Whichever way you decide to float, you won't want to put in without a swimsuit and water shoes, plenty of sun protection (including sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats), a quality life jacket, and a cooler loaded with water and snacks.

With countless miles of waterways across Missouri, there are options for any kind of outing, from easy day trips from St. Louis, Springfield, and Kansas City to more out-of-the-way rivers and streams. Here are 10 of the best destinations for a Missouri float trip.

1. Meramec River

The Meramec River snakes around Central Missouri, running along the outskirts of the Mark Twain National Forest and through Meramec State Park , flowing towards St. Louis, around where it joins the Mississippi River. There are a number of outfitters offering float trips on this scenic, forest-flanked waterway — Ozark Outdoors Resort , Meramec Caverns , and Old Cove Canoe and Kayak , among others — and some are just an hour's drive from St. Louis. Known for its "river resorts," Meramec is also perfect for groups in the market for a weekend-long float party. Camp out in the state park or consider reserving a cozy cabin right on the river.

2. Niangua River

scgerding/Getty Images

Though it's best known as a fishing hotspot teeming with trout, bass, and catfish, the Niangua River in south and central Missouri is highly float-worthy and bursting with the natural splendor of the Ozarks. Tour companies like Riverfront Campground and Canoe , Niangua River Oasis , and Adventures Float Trips rent out equipment and facilitate trips of varying lengths on the Niangua. Along the river is nothing but untouched nature, so make sure to bring everything you need and go with a plan. The cabins and camping at Riverfront Campground, an hour outside of Springfield, make it possible to plan a whole weekend around floating.

3. Big Piney River

yourmap/Getty Images

The 110-mile-long Big Piney River runs through the Mark Twain National Forest, a vast (1.5 million-acre) patch of protected land stretching across the Ozark Highlands and beyond. Its central location makes it easily accessible from any part of the state, and floaters are guaranteed not to be disappointed by the wild scenery. If you plan to float the national forest section, however, you'll be going it alone as outfitters are not authorized to operate there. The U.S. Forest Service recommends entry and exit at the following access points: Bookers Bend, Crossroads Access, East Gate, and the Slabtown Recreation Area. If you're more interested in an organized trip, you can find that on other parts of the river. BSC Outdoors runs float trips on the Big Piney and conjoined Gasconade rivers from Dixon.

4. Beaver Creek

This quiet and gentle tributary of the White River is great for longer excursions due to its gentle and consistent gradient. Like Big Piney, Beaver Creek also runs through part of the Mark Twain National Forest and is popular for fishing. Self-organized float trips "should start in the Bradleyville area or below," the Missouri Canoe and Floaters Association says, "unless you want to wade or fish." Beaver Creek Campground , a seven-minute drive from Bradleyville, offers rentals and a shuttle service that will take you and your equipment anywhere along the creek.

5. James River

eyecrave productions/Getty Images

The James River is a close option for those in Springfield. Although it once had a reputation for being dirty, the James River Basin Partnership has worked in recent years to clean up the waterway and make it a solid option for float trips again. Start your float at the Joe Crighton Access and follow the James River Water Trail to the Lake Springfield Park and Boathouse. Otherwise, go further south to rent equipment from James River Outfitters in Galena, which offers boats, shuttles, and camping accommodations.

6. Current River

The National Rivers Project , part of the River Management Society, calls Current River and Jacks Fork "two of the finest floating rivers you'll find anywhere." The Current flows from Montauk State Park and terminates in northeastern Arkansas. Paddlers can put in at The Landing in Van Buren, a lodge and raft outfitter that burned down in 2021 but has continued to facilitate floats along the Current River. The Landing will even kit you out for a multi-day expedition lasting up to five nights.

7. Jacks Fork River

Eifel Kreutz/Getty Images

This Missouri river is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways system. Its clear waters are surrounded by cliffs, making for a picturesque trip, but water levels vary depending on the time of year. One outfitter, Two Rivers Canoe Rental , recommends the 14-mile float from Alley Springs to Two Rivers as a year-round option. Anything above Alley Springs, it says, is for the more experienced. You can use Two Rivers for everything you need — rentals, shuttles, camping, groceries — on a Jacks Fork River float.

8. Gasconade River

Robert Charity/Getty Images

This central Missouri river is hundreds of miles long, making it optimal both for a short day trip or a multi-day journey. You can even do a link-up of the Gasconade River and Big Piney — the two join together north of Devils Elbow — with BSC Outdoors ' three- to eight-mile excursions. For longer trips on the Gasconade only, the outfitter offers a multi-day, 14-mile float from the Riddle Bridge access point. The route goes past the Gasconade Hills Conservation Area.

9. North Fork of the White River

Another great option for a Missouri float trip, the North Fork of the White River has mostly calm waters — and its abundance of trout also makes it an ideal spot for fishing. The Missouri Canoe and Floaters Association says the stretch from Dora to Norfork Lake (across the Arkansas border) is almost always floatable. Some of the lower reaches, however, can get "sporty." Sunburst Ranch offers camping and a range of float trips along this picturesque river, the most popular being the five- to seven-hour float from Hammond Mill.

10. Huzzah and Courtois Creeks

These two creeks flow nearly side-by-side in the same region before joining the larger Meramec River. Both Huzzah and Courtois are beautiful and popular among the local paddlers, but their depths (and temperatures) can change drastically depending on the season, so be sure to check the conditions with a local outfitter before you go. Ozark Outdoors Resort in Leasburg is a trusted tour company running five- and 10-mile trips on Courtois Creek and four-, 10-, and 14-milers on Huzzah Creek. After a long day on the water, you can relax with a beverage and live music (Fridays and Saturdays) at the on-site Paddlers Bar and Grill.

Best STL Float Trip Destinations

The heat has officially arrived in St. Louis. This weekend I was out and about in the sun and all I could think about was being in the water. Of course I love a good pool, but nothing is better than a group of friends in a giant raft floating down one of the many rivers of Missouri. If you haven’t yet experienced a float trip, or are new to St. Louis, here are the top places for float trips in Missouri:

Bass River Resort : This resort in Steelville, the “Missouri Floating Capital,” offers you a variety of camping and floating options. If you’re not quite up for the real camping experience with tents and sleeping bags, they offer cabins for sleeping. They also offer all floating options: kayaks, canoes, tubes and rafts. Float trip options range from 3 hours to 6 hours along the Courtois, Huzzah or Meramec River. Check out their monthly specials  which usually include a discount of some kind and holiday specials include BBQ dinner or buffet breakfast.

Huzzah Valley Resort : Huzzah Valley Resort also offers cabins for those not interested in the typical camping style. They also offer RV sites that stay open year round. They have canoes, rafts, tubes and kayaks with 1 day float-trip packages that include lunch. They even offer tandem kayaks. Check out their  special packages  which include fun events  at the Event Barn, breakfast buffets, BBQ dinners and more.

Ozark Outdoors Riverfront Resort : This resort in Leasburg is probably the most widely known. You have the option to float along the Courtois Creek, Meramec River or Huzzah River. This resort is more of a party resort with large groups partying late into the night and then getting up early on Saturday morning to join the masses in an all-day float trip. They offer rafts that fit up to 10 people, which is great because everyone can be in the same float with their coolers tied to the outside. This resort is where the annual Bull Float Trip happens.

Bear Cat Getaway : This resort in Lesterville also offers both camping sites and cabins. They offer rafts for up to 8 people and canoes to float along the Black River in the Ozarks. Every weekend starting Memorial Weekend, they have live music under the stars. Check out the entertainment schedule . They also offer packages which include dinner plus a general store and food bar if you’re not up for fending for yourself all weekend.

Twin Rivers Landing : If you’re looking for a more relaxed, family-oriented float trip style, Twin Rivers, also in Lesterville, offers floating on the Black River. They have canoes, kayaks, tubes, and rafts for 4, 6, or 8 people. Pets are allowed on the river, but only in canoes. They are more family/quiet time oriented  with but do also have a game barn, sand volleyball court, softball field, playground, and horseshoe courts.

Bird’s Nest Lodge : Another popular resort in Steelville, MO that offers float trips down the Upper Meramec River. They have rafts for up to 12 people, canoes, kayaks, tubes and Johnboats. There are camp sites and cabins with bluff views and hot tubs. They also offer dining facilities for breakfast and dinner so you could just bring your own beer and snacks and be good to go.

Lay Z Day Canoes and Camping : Just 35 miles past Steelville on The Big Piney River, is Lay Z Day Canoes and Camping in St. Robert. The Big Piney River is great for fishing. Lay Z Days offers canoes, tubes, kayaks, rafts, and jon boats. They have an annual Haunted River Float that sounds both terrifying and awesome!

One Eyed Willy’s : The place for primitive camping. Located in Lebanon, MO, floating is on the Niangua River. They offer cabins, RV sites and camping. They have canoes, kayaks, tubes and rafts that hold up to 4 people. They are known for their gravel-bar Pete’s Place. They also offer entertainment with live bands on the weekends.

And if you want to join a float trip, but don’t have friends…that want to join you, check out these great trips where you can just bring yourself and join in the fun:

#1: The Bull 93.7 Float Trip : Every year, 93.7 The Bull hosts a huge weekend float extravaganza complete with country music concerts with big names like Hunter Hayes, Gloriana, Joe Nichols, Montgomery Gentry and more. The float trip takes place at Ozarks Riverfront Resort each year in August. Tickets sell out quickly so book your float early.

#2. Missouri Float Trips : A Meetup sponsored by FloatMissouri.com, they plan tons of float trips throughout the Summer for anyone to join. The group is free and you just pay for your float trip. They have all kinds of trips from the Dogs Days Float and a Back To School Float to End of Summer trips in September. They’re a little more low-key than The Bull Float trip, but sound like a lot of fun.

If you have never been on a float trip, here are some important tips from someone who has some experience:

1. Bag everything. If you float down the river in a canoe or kayak, you’re more than likely going to tip over at some point. If all of your items are tightly concealed in ziplock bags, nothing gets wet. And bring some bungee cords to tie floats and coolers together so nothing “floats away.”

3. Water shoes or Tom’s: To get in and out of the float, you have to climb onto rocks, or if you stop along the way at any sand islands, you’ll need them if you don’t want to end up with glass or some other sharp object piercing your foot. And tennis shoes get pretty heavy once they’re wet and sometimes fall off.

4. If you’re making a weekend out of it, then you need camping gear. Plenty of water is a must, food that doesn’t spoil, a tent and sleeping bag, toilet paper, toilet paper, toilet paper (yes, I’m a girl and I know what is necessary), wet wipes, deodorant, bug spray, sunscreen, quarters for the showers, and towels. All of these items are a must. And if you’re not a big fan of tent life, several of the float trip resorts have room for glampers. What’s a glamper, you ask? Check out the glamping life here .

5. Sunglasses and Sunblock: Of course with sunglasses, it’s a good idea to put them on a string or something to tie around your neck so you don’t lose them in the water. And of course, without sunblock, this could be you:

Here are some more tips on what to bring to your float trip.

However, one day when she is married and has a family to cook for, she would love to take cooking classes and learn awesome skills like the chefs on Iron Chef America...as long as she doesn't have to clean the dishes afterwards.

Lower Meramec River – Section III

  • January 30, 2021
  • Get in a great paddle on a beautiful river without a big time commitment
  • Easy drive, generally less than, or right around, an hour.
  • Unique, natural beauty with interesting rock formations, forested hill sides, large gravel bars, and bottomland forest and fields
  • Nice sections of fun but easy rapids interspersed among more flat-water like sections.
  • Easy to self-support with many public access points with large parking lots where you can leave a car while you float
  • I’m amazed by how little civilization you see in many sections – no houses, no roads, no wires or noise. You really can get away from it all without going very far.
  • You’ll generally have the river largely to yourself. While there are two outfitters that run this section, they aren’t nearly as popular as the floats near Steeleville. While we’ve seen fishermen, speedboaters, and kayakers in this section, most of the time, you’ve got the river to yourselves.
  • A fair number of motor boats cruise along this section. Most are friendly and courteous but they may break up your peaceful solitude a bit.
  • The water can get a bit murky particularly in the sections below the confluence with the Bourbeuse river and the Big river. The upper parts of this section are quite clear or a beautiful green depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions.
  • Our coverage of Section 2 of the Meramec River
  • Sections of the Meramec River from MissouriCanoe.org. Detailed maps of the 3 sections of the Meramec with all access points and landmarks along the way with the specific river mileage listed for each. Essential for planning your trip.
  • Ozark Anglers – Meramec River Sections – Excellent page that provides gradients, access points, river gauges, navigability levels, fish stocks, descriptions, and lots more.
  • Directions to Pacific Palisades Boat Ramp, Missouri
  • Directions to Allenton Access
  • River ‘Round Conservation Area
  • Pacific Palisades Conservation Area
  • Old Cove Canoe and Kayak – Offers canoe, raft, and kayak rentals with options for 9-mile float and 4.5 mile float
  • FFLOG-MeramecRiver – A great blog that tracks the paddles of two folks that have paddled most of the rivers in Missouri. This link has just the Meramec sections but the site has lots more rivers with nice pics and info.

st louis float trip

Lots of folks do float trips on the upper Meramec River up near Steeleville, Missouri or the mid-Meramec near Meramec Carverns, but not nearly as many people have paddled the much closer lower Meramec River (aka Section III) which winds its way from near St. Clair, through Pacific (i.e. just past Six Flags), Fenton and Kirkwood and then down to Arnold where it joins with the Mississippi.

I had always been curious what it’d be like to paddle the Meramec closer to St. Louis. In October of 2020, I finally decided to try it out on a beautiful fall day. I enjoyed it so much I decided I wanted to explore and share my thoughts on the best (and worst) sections.

I’ve done parts of this after work in less than 2 hours including my drive from U. City. Those did involve paddling upstream and then floating back downstream. My favorite one-way sections can be done in 5 or 6 hours including driving and shuttling.

Rather than order them in a rational and contiguous fashion, I’m going to attempt to order them from my most favorite to least favorite. I’m guessing that’s going to be hard to do though since I’ll likely thoroughly enjoy most of them and mood, water level, weather, and company can play a role in perception. But here goes…

Lower Meramec River – Ordered From Favorite to Least Favorite

Pacific palisades to allenton access – 7.9 miles, section ratings.

A spectacular 7.9-mile float on a beautiful Ozark river where you get to be fully immersed in nature, with almost no signs of civilization yet, an easy drive, merely a few minutes south of Six Flags. Beautiful scenery, great rock formations, lots of nice Class I rapids, nice gravel/sand beaches, clean water, and a perfect length. This section takes us about 2 hours and 45 minutes to paddle at a fairly leisurely pace with a couple short breaks.

We’ve paddled this section 3 times in the last year. It’s combination of convenience, beauty, and fun is hard to beat. The first couple miles of this section are fairly flat. The middle 3-mile section has lots of fun Class I rapids and beautiful rock formations. The last couple miles are flatter and fairly developed with lots of cottages along the banks. There were a couple spots with strainers where inexperienced paddlers might struggle a bit but I would guess most folks could safely make it down this section at normal flow without much of a problem. There were also a lot of flatwater sections where, if you weren’t paddling, you would barely move but the surrounding scenery made them all enjoyable.

Despite being so close to St. Louis, the area was really pristine. No trash. Very little road noise. Very few signs of civilization at all for most of the route. In the beginning we did hear gun-fire from a nearby gun range but that quickly faded as we got downstream. About halfway in, there’s a bunch of historic dumped cars, apparently put there to stabilize the banks of the river there. I found that more intriguing than disturbing. But mostly, it is undisturbed natural beauty.

The effort to reward ratio on this trip is really ideal. The put-in and pull-out spots are about 10 minutes from the Six Flags exit. The whole trip, from doorstep to doorstep took about 5.5 hours.

You’ll need two vehicles to self-support this trip. Drive to the Six Flags exit off 44. Head South to Allenton Access first to drop off the vehicle w/o boats. Then, head back towards Six Flags the way you came but just before 44, turn left on Route 66 (aka Business Loop 44) to “ Pacific Palisades Boat Ramp, Missouri “. Make sure to specify “Pacific Palisades Boat Ramp, Missouri” or Google might try to take you to California or a parking lot in the right park but far from the river.

Times Beach Access to Sherman Beach – 8 Miles Times Beach Access to Castlewood State Park – 10 Miles

I’ve consistently seen a lot of wildlife in this section and it has some of the best easy but fun Class-I rapids on the Meramec, there’s a cool abandoned gravel dredge towards the end but, from a scenery standpoint, it doesn’t have much in the way cool rock formations and there’s just one big bluff so it isn’t as scenic as other segments.

This section starts off strong with a nice, relatively long (~ 250 yards) Class-I rapid right under the I-44 bridge and has occasional rapids throughout the next 8 miles to keep it fun. Based on looking at the map, I had expected this section to be mostly flatwater with lots of development but that wasn’t the case. It seems there was quite a bit of vertical fall for the first 8 miles of this float. Along the Al Foster trail section, one spot had a rapid with a nice 100-yard train of 9-inch waves with some serious flow to it. It is a fun place for some light play-boating (wave surfing, eddie turns, ferries) if the water is high-enough (which it generally is). I would have played more in the rapid but I didn’t have my kayak skirt for the whitewater play-boat I was paddling and the waves were big enough that I was taking on a good bit of water in the little playing I did do. Because of the size of rapids, I would not recommend this section for complete beginners. If you keep going past Sherman Beach on to Castlewood, it gets quite flat but is quite scenic. Because of that, Castlewood is a pretty good spot if you just want to paddle upstream and back down to your car and not deal with shuttling cars and boats (but see the note below on lot closure).

Other than several bridges, there’s very little to indicate that you are so close to St. Louis in terms of development. There are a few scenic bluffs along the way and we’ve seen lots of wildlife in this section: muskrats, wild turkeys, green herons, great blue herons, king fishers, deer, eagles, and more.

On one trip here, the access at Castlewood was a big hassle. They had closed the Lincoln Beach parking lot near the river and so we had to portage the boats about a half mile to the parking lot on the other side of the train tracks. Not bad, but we’ve been spoiled by the convenience of all the other access points. At Sherman Beach, the pull out is at a big beach just passed some train tracks. The parking lot is only 50 feet from the water so, super-convenient. But the drive to Sherman Beach takes some small, but pretty, roads that are quite out of the way.

River ‘Round Conservation Area to Robertsville State Park – 11.8 Miles

The top half had a nice flow to it with a few easy rapids to keep it fun. The Bourbeuse river joins in about 5 miles into this one and the river gets noticeably wider, deeper, a bit murkier, and slower at that point. You do still get some more nice rapid sections but they are fewer and further between with longer and deeper pools in between. I’ve done this section twice so far and both times, we had the river mostly to ourselves. There are some really nice stretches that have no development with beautiful bottomland forests teaming with birds. Other stretches are more developed with some cottages but overall, it is a beautiful section. About half way in, there was a really fun (though challenging) rope swing as of 6/4/2023.

One downside of this section is the 14-mile (23 minute) drive between the put-in and take-out is longer than other sections but it was a beautiful drive. Old Cove Canoe and Kayak does provide Canoe, raft, and kayak rentals and transportation for part of this section, River ‘Round to Old Cove, a 4.5 mile trip. We had a nice conversation with one of their folks and he said they offer the cheapest kayak rentals available.

Robertsville State Park to Pacific Pallisades – 11 miles

This section is certainly beautiful but I didn’t like it nearly as much as the Pacific Pallisades to Allenton Access section because it is mostly wide, deep, and flat so the water flow is slower and, it just doesn’t have enough rapids and excitement for my taste. This section is a great workout though if you are looking to very actively paddle for 11 miles. It also has some great views of the Pacific Pallisades (which I didn’t capture because we were racing to get off the water before it got completely dark) and a variety of other interesting sites. While not my favorite section, I still loved it.

st louis float trip

Allenton Access to Route 66 State Park / Times Beach Access – 7 miles

This is a very calm, fairly pretty, beginner-friendly section of the Meramec that is easy to access. The river tends to be fairly deep and slow-flowing for much of this section That makes it popular for motor boats who want to cruise along the Meramec River. There have been a fair number of motor boats all three times we have paddled this section though everyone was friendly and most of us enjoyed the little bit of excitement the waves of the wake provider in this otherwise very calm section.

The 1st half of the float down from Allenton Access has a few simple class I rapids but this would be a great spot for beginners to try paddling a river as they were all very easily navigated. The Big River flows into the Meramac about half way into this section. Also, I was surprised to learn there actually is an outfitter, Brookdale Farms, that puts people out on this section of the river. There were about 8, 8-man rafts out when we paddled on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Most of our group would have preferred a bit more action in terms of rapids but one person said it was her favorite she’s done on the Meramec so far as it was relaxing and not at all crowded.

NOTE: If you are looking for a pretty, easy-to-get-to spot to just paddle upstream for a ways and then float back down to your car (aka, an out and back paddle) without having to shuttle cars, Route 66 is a great place to do that. The river is quite wide and deep for several miles upstream of Route 66 State Park so you don’t have to battle the current too much. I was able to do a 4 mile paddle (2 upstream, 2 downstream) in about an hour of paddling. Was an excellent workout. I could hear the Highway 44 road noise but otherwise it was peaceful paddle with lots of great nature sounds (birds, bugs, frogs).

st louis float trip

Red Horse Access to River Round – 15 miles

I had high hopes for fun rapids on this section based on its twistiness and reading through some blogs prior to going. That didn’t pan out. It seems there is very little vertical drop for most of this section. So, while it is indeed twisty, it is mostly deep and wide pools with fairly rare, very tame, class I rapids. I’d say there are no more than 15 very mild through the 15 miles.

My other beef with this section was, despite it being quite far from St. Louis, it was quite developed with lots of houses, private camp sites, and other development along the route, likely due to its proximity to St. Clair and Highway 30. On the Sunday we visited, there were lots of people out in boats (rafts, canoes, kayaks, power boats) out enjoying the river particularly in the upper sections. Everyone was friendly but I rather enjoy having the river more to myself.

It did have big majestic bluffs, very clear water (during a fairly dry spell, late August 2021), wildflowers, and lots of other natural beauty so it was certainly a wonderful day on the river but, for my personal tastes, there are nicer sections that are closer with faster moving water and more engaging rapids.

Logistically, it is a 10-mile, 20-minute drive between the put-in at Redhorse Access and pull-out at River ‘Round Conservation Area. Both spots have large parking lots with ramps in good shape. Both spots were easy to get to from 44.

Valley Park

While this section is close and easy to get to, it gave off much more of a Mississippi backwater / industrial runoff / drainage ditch vibe than the pristine Ozark stream vibe that many of the upstream sections offer. Lots of broken up concrete, dumped stuff, power lines, engineered river banks, … It was unappealing enough to me that I’m not sure I’ll explore the other parts downstream from here as I expect it’ll be more of the same.

I did an out and back paddle with some friends who were training for the MR340 (a 370 mile race on the Missouri River from Kansas City to St. Louis). We paddled about 5 miles in all just before and during sunset. I’m glad I did it but I definitely prefer other areas.

Canoe and Camp on Missouri’s Big River at Cherokee Landing!

NOTICE: Due to limited capacity reservations are highly recommended.

Why the Big River?

You will avoid the crowds of many of Missouri’s float rivers, while enjoying the relaxing natural surroundings of this Northern Ozarks stream. Big River’s name is quite a misnomer. Early French settlers named the river Grande due to its beauty and during translation to English the name “Big” evolved. Big River is a tributary of the Meramec River, flowing north to the confluence.

Float through the forested ridges and cool hollows of St. Francois State Park.

st louis float trip

Cherokee Landing is a small outfitter and the only one on this portion of the Big River, so you will not find the over-crowded condition of other rivers.

cherokee landing big river mo

Cherokee Landing is centrally located with easy highway access and is within an hour of St. Louis. Float trips start upstream and end at Cherokee Landing.

Water Levels

Because of our location on the upper portion of the river, the water level around Cherokee Landing can rise and fall very quickly. Very often, when the St. Louis or Steelville areas have floods, Cherokee Landing has an excellent float. Please call ahead to check the river condition. Click here to view USGS water level data for the Big River. Please be aware that during low-water levels (3.5 feet or less) the suggested maximum weight of floaters and gear is 400 lbs. for a 4-person raft and 600 lbs for a 6 person raft.

We are open:

Friday & Saturday for camping • Saturday & Sunday for float trips

Reservations are not required but recommended as availability cannot be guaranteed without it.

Weekday floats and camping are only available with a prearranged appointment.

We request that all floats end before dusk.

FLOATING FAQ's

It is a six mile float, and takes on average between 3-5 hours to complete. Time may vary due to the amount of stops taken, watercraft rented, as well as amount of paddling.

You must be at least 3 years old to be in a raft. Our two person canoes and tandem kayaks minimum age is 10 years old, while accompanied by an adult. Single kayaks minimum age is 13 years old.

Please check both our website pricing , as well as our FareHarbor reservation system, to see our most up to date pricing. All rafts are priced at a discounted rate when raft capacity is 1 person under capacity or more. Once a raft is filled to capacity (exe. 6 people in a 6 person raft), there is an additional $35 charge.

No. We do not shuttle personal watercraft. Meramec Caverns and Caveman Floating is private property, and does NOT allow any type of personal watercraft on the property for putting in, or taking out. If you choose to bring your own watercraft, you will need to shuttle it to a public access put in and you would need to take out at another public access (not the Caveman Floating take out, or Meramec Caverns property).

In order to receive a full refund, you must call at least 7 days in advance in order to receive a refund for your reservation.

If there is no lighting or heavy rain, we will still be floating. In the event of severe weather conditions where we do not feel it is safe to float, we will push back floats until the severe weather passes.

We ask all floaters to be back to our take out by 7pm in order to avoid late fees of $35 per person, per hour. Our late time is liable to change due to time of the year, river conditions, etc., and this time will be made known several times by our bus drivers.

If CFC does cancel floats for the day of your reservation, we do not offer refunds, but offer rainchecks. This allows you to come back anytime within a year of your reservation date, to use your reserved watercraft.

Pets are welcomed in canoes and kayaks. Pets are NOT allowed in rafts.

No. Reservations are not required, but highly recommended to guarantee the watercraft and departure time you desire.

No. We do not offer vehicle shuttles.

No. We do not offer overnight float trips.

We ask everyone to be here at least 30 minutes early at our Campstore, the brown building with a porch on the front, located in our campground in order to check in, fill out waivers if not done so already, and to prepare for your afternoon on the river. Our buses leave promptly for each float trip, so in order to avoid missing your float trip time, please arrive 30 minutes early.

Depending on your cell phone provider, cell service is available in some areas. If taking cell phones, we ask that you have your cell phone in a water-proof/water-tight container.

No. At this time we only offer our 6 mile float trip.

We recommend coolers no larger than 50qt in rafts. Coolers any larger could potentially cause your watercraft to drag if you have several people in your boat. For canoes, we recommend no larger than 30qtz, and for kayaks no larger than 20qtz. There are no styrofoam coolers allowed.

No. You cannot bring glass containers on the river.

What is floating.

….A Journey into The Void. Floating, also known as sensory deprivation, is a transformative practice, where the floater effortlessly floats in a solution of water and Epsom salt in a sensory controlled environment to achieve intentional solitude. Frequent floaters have described their escapes into the void as an integrative life-hack, an adventure which provides a vast spectrum of benefits and solutions, such as increased creativity and productivity, emotional regulation, pain relief, reduced inflammation, and increased self-awareness.

It's beautiful inside, and they've thought of everything, from sights, to sound, to smell. The float itself helps me clear my mind and relax, and because my body doesn't have to do anything to support me, most of my aches and pains float away."

"What a wonderful experience. I admit I was completely nervous at first. The staff made me at ease with explaining the process. My body and mind are so relaxed. I absolutely loved it and will be back for sure. Thank you!"

"My entire experience at float stl was absolutely amazing! The atmosphere as soon as you walk in relaxes you right away! The Big River, like its sister tributary of the Meramec, the Bourbeuse, is slow. It differs mainly in that it flows through a more heavily populated area, yet there are many pleasant places along it. Upper sections near the “lead belt” are subject to many of the effects of urban population and are not recommended even when there is enough water to float there. Sections both above and below Washington State Park are more attractive, and the park makes an excellent base of operations for base camped floats. Old mills and mill sites add interest. The area is so close to St. Louis that it can be reached in little more than an hour’s driving from that city.

Difficulty: I Gradients: General — 2.4; Hwy. E to Hwy. 21 — 3.6; to Pine Ford Bridge — 2.2; to Byrnesville — 1.9; to Meramec River –1.5. Counties: St. Francois, Washington, Jefferson.

The Elk River is one of our favorite places to go on a float trip in Missouri. We live in St. Louis, and one of our favorite things to do in the summer is to go on a float trip.

Floating on the Elk River is a great choice for a float trip. It’s an absolutely gorgeous river and there are a lot of options for places to stay, camp, and rent float trip equipment.

This article is going to tell you all about the best Elk River outfitters, the best cabins on the Elk River, awesome campgrounds, and more.

Where is the Elk River?

st louis float trip

The Elk River Missouri is located in McDonald county which is the furthest most southwest county of Missouri.

The easiest way to reach the area is to take I-44 West from Springfield Missouri until you get to Joplin and then get on I-49 South for another 30 minutes or so.

The most popular area for Elk River float trips is the section of the river between Pineville Mo and Noel Mo. This section of the river is all Class I or Class II which means that it’s Moderate to Easy. This makes floating the Elk River a great choice even for beginners.

Best Time of Year for Noel MO Float Trips

a man on a float noel mo while fishing

Technically you can float the Elk River all year, especially if you have your own equipment. But if you plan on getting in the water then we recommend going any time between late Spring and early Fall.

The most popular months for floating the Elk River are June, July, and August . If you’re going to go on an Elk River float trip in the summer months, it’s best to avoid the weekend if possible. This is the most popular time for all Missouri float trips , and rivers can get VERY crowded especially around holidays like the 4th of July.

You’ll also want to make sure you pack the right things for a float trip and the season you’re going in.

If you’re more interested in fishing then going early in the spring or later in the fall are good options because you won’t be getting in the water and there will be fewer tubes in the way of your fishing.

Elk River Float Trip Outfitters

There are several outfitters that offer Elk River Floats. Picking the best one normally comes down to price and where exactly you’ll be staying. Here’s a short list of the outfitters that offer float trips on the Elk River.

Shady Beach Campground

➡️ Looking for the best campground & outfitter on the Elk River? ⬅️ Shady Beach Campground is by far our favorite campground and place to go on an Elk River float trip. Make reservations by calling 800.745.6481 or visiting the Shady Beach website for more info!

Shady Beach Offers:

  • Canoes (plastic and aluminum)
  • Kayaks (single and tandem)
  • 4, 6, 8, or 12-Person Rafts

Shady Beach Campground & Outfitters is, in our opinion, the best place you can go on an Elk River float trip . One of our favorite parts about Shady Beach is that you can be shuttled upriver and float back to the campground, making it super easy when you’re tired at the end of a big float trip day.

Another awesome thing about Shady Beach is that almost all the campsites are right next to the river , making it super easy to just hang out in the water for the day! They also offer 30&50amp RV sites as well as shaded tent sites.

For those of you wanting to go on a float trip but aren’t so sure about camping, they also have a variety of cabins to choose from that range from camping-style cabins all the way to large vacation rental cabins that sleep up to 22 people.

Shady Beach is a family-run business with exceptional hospitality; they will make sure you are happy and having a great time when you come to stay with them!

Two Sons Floating and Camping

  • 6 or 8 Person Raft

Two Sons is located between Noel Mo and Shady Beach campground making them a great option if you want to float the lower portion of the Elk River.

They have canoes, rafts, and tubes so no matter how you want to float the Elk River they have you covered.

River Ranch Resort

  • Night Floats
  • 4, 6 or 8-Person Rafts

River Ranch Resort is even further downriver past Two Sons just north of Noel Mo. Floating this section of the river can be really convenient since it’s pretty close to town.

In addition to all of the normal kayak, raft, tube, and canoe options, River Ranch Resort also offers a “Glow Float” which is a 1-mile float trip at night!

Elk River Floats

  • 4, 6, 8 or 10-Person Rafts

Elk River Floats is located on the other side of the river from River Ranch Resort which means they are also right in Noel Missouri. Elk River Floats offers all of the same rental equipment options that other outfitters do.

Elk River Floats is a good option if you want to do some overnight floating on the Elk River. They have a 12-mile float option where you can camp overnight halfway through your float.

Big Elk Floats and Camping

  • Largest Variety of Equipment
  • Vehicle Shuttles
  • Private Boat Shuttles
  • Fishing Services

Big Elk Floats offer probably the largest variety in terms of rentals. They of course have your typical canoes, kayaks, tubes, and rafts. But they also have some REALLY big rafts, tandem kayaks, paddle boards, and more.

They’re located further upriver in Pineville Missouri so if you’re looking for an option outside of Noel then Big Elk is a good choice.

They also offer private shuttles for either you, your vehicle, or your boat if you have your own equipment and are just looking for a ride. We prefer to bring our own kayak as they are a lot more comfortable.

  • Private Shuttles

Kozy Kamp is located in Pineville Missouri so they’re another good option if you would like to float the upper portion of the Elk River Mo.

They also offer private shuttles so if you have your own equipment and you just need a ride they have you covered. This isn’t a service that all float trip outfitters offer so it’s good to know who’s willing to take you if you need a ride.

How Much Does it Cost to Float the Elk River?

floating noel mo with a kayak on a blue sky day

How much it’ll cost you for either a Noel float trip or a Pineville float trip on the Elk River will vary depending on a few things. Here’s a short list of the things that will affect how much river floating is going to end up costing you.

Do you have your own equipment?

This is the biggest part of the expense. If you have your own equipment then all you’ll need to pay for is a shuttle ride. Not all outfitters offer this so check the list above to see who does.

If you need to rent your equipment then it will include a ride both to the river and back when you’re done but it’s going to be a lot more expensive in general.

If you plan to go on any other float trips in the area such as the Niangua River or the Current River , it’s probably a good idea to invest in your own equipment.

How would you like to float?

When you rent equipment you’ll notice that there is a big difference in price depending on what you would like to rent.

  • Tubes are often the cheapest option and are generally speaking about $30-$50 per person.
  • Rafts are usually the most expensive option ranging from about $150 to almost $400 per raft depending on how big of a raft you want.
  • Kayaks and Canoes often range from about $40 – $70 per person.

How long would you like to float?

When you pick out what equipment you would like to rent you’ll also be asked which float you would like to go on. Most outfitters will offer more than one option. Your equipment and float will be all rolled together into one price.

Campground or Cabin?

The last thing to consider would be your accommodation, where are you going to stay? Lots of people choose to camp, but there are other options in both Pineville and Noel.

Now I know what you’re thinking, camping is definitely going to be cheaper, but you might be surprised.

Since camping is such a popular option for both Pineville and Noel Missouri floating the campgrounds are far from cheap. Sites are often also limited to a certain number of people. So a hotel or VRBO can actually be a cheaper option at times, especially if you’re sharing with a large group.

Since there are a lot of great VRBOs to stay in along the Elk River (unlike on the Illinois River ) we definitely recommend checking them out.

How Long is a Float on the Elk River?

girl kayak elk river with the sun peaking through the trees

Each outfitter has designated floats that they offer. This is because they have to put in and take you back out of the river somewhere they have access directly to the shore. Most of the shoreline along the Elk River is private property so they can’t operate just anywhere.

There are two main factors that will determine how long an Elk River float trip will take:

How Many Miles Will Float?

  • Most float trip outfitters on the Elk River have options that are anywhere from 4 to 12 miles. A 4-hour float trip will take you 3-4 hours and a 12-mile float trip will take closer to 7 or 8 hours.
  • There are a couple of outfitters who offer 12-mile float trips that you can do in two days. You will need a raft or a canoe for this since you’ll need to bring a tent and the rest of your camping equipment along with you.

How Many Times Will You Stop?

  • Can a 4-mile float trip on the Elk River take all day? Yes, it absolutely can! There are tons of great spots along the Elk River to stop and hang out for a while and you’re definitely going to want to do that at least a few times.
  • Stopping on the shore is part of the fun! You can go for a dip to cool down, eat lunch, and just hang out in the water. If you stop frequently this will make your float take a lot longer.
  • Your outfitter will tell you what time you have to be at the take-out point. They might charge you an extra fee if you’re not back in time.
  • We made the mistake of passing the takeout point on the Current River one time and it cost us both time and money.

Where to Stay for Noel Missouri Float Trips

Staying in a cabin with a group can be a ton of fun and can work out to be pretty cost-effective depending on how many people are staying.

Here are our top two picks for Elk River float trip cabins.

Best Place to Stay on the Elk River Noel Missouri

Elk River Cabin That Sleeps Up To 18

noel missouri river cabin to stay in

  • Great for Big Groups
  • Right on the Elk River
  • Less than 5 Minutes to Outfitters

This cabin will definitely save you some money if you’re planning on floating with a big group. It’s conveniently located right in Noel Missouri so some of the best outfitters are less than 5 minutes away.

The cabin is also right on the river so you’ll still be able to hang out on the river after your float. You just don’t have to sleep on the ground to do it.

✅ Book Your Cabin Here Now! These cabins get booked up quickly in the summer, so make sure to book in advance.

Best Place to Stay in Pineville Missouri

The Farmhouse at Mimosa Riverside Ranch

noel river missouri cabin with deck

  • Right on the River
  • Sleeps up to 8
  • Great Views of the River

If you plan on staying upriver closer to Pineville Missouri then this is definitely the best place to stay . It sleeps up to 8 people which is just about perfect for most float trip groups. It sits right on the Elk River and has an amazing giant deck that looks out over the water.

You can actually start your float upriver and float past the house which makes it perfect for stopping for lunch. There really aren’t many options for Noel Mo float trips where you can make a stop at your accommodation which makes this house pretty unique.

Best Noel Missouri Float Trip Campgrounds

camping on the elk river with a tent one of the best missouri float trips

Camping is one of the most popular options for Noel MO float trips. Most of the outfitters that I mentioned above are also campgrounds which can make planning your trip a little easier.

If you plan your float trip through the campground they will often pick you up right from your campsite, which makes getting out on the river a little easier. Be sure to also ask the campground where each of the float trips they offer ends.

More often than not they will have an option that ends at the campground. We’ve been on a ton of float trips at this point and ending our float at the campground is our favorite. You don’t need to get back on the bus after you’ve been out on the river all day you can simply walk back to your site and relax.

Here are some great spots for camping on the Elk River in both Noel and Pineville.

Elk River Campgrounds in Noel Mo

River Ranch Resort Noel Missouri

  • Cabins on the Elk River
  • Primitive, Electric, and RV Campsite
  • Offers Float Trips
  • Pet Friendly

If you are planning on camping River Ranch is a great option. Not only does River Ranch have campsites they also have cabins on the Elk River, glamping options and so much more.

Having so much variety in one place is great because more often than not people end up floating the Missouri Elk River in groups and let’s be honest not everyone is cool with sleeping in a tent on the ground. (You know who you are).

Wayside Campground

  • Campsites right on the Elk River
  • Tent Camping and RV Sites
  • Rental Cabins at other Locations

Wayside Campground is another great elk River Campground. Just like the River Ranch campsites most of the Wayside campsites are right on the banks of the Elk River.

They don’t have quite as many options right on the river, but they do have several locations so they have more options in total.

Two Sons Floats and Camping

  • Primitive, Electric, and RV Sites
  • Great Reviews

If you’re looking for an elk river camping option that’s close to Noel but not right in town the Two Sons is the perfect spot. They’re only two miles north of Noel but trust me when I say it makes all the difference.

While River Ranch and Wayside can be nice because they’re close to other things, being out in nature is what camping is all about.

Elk River Campsites near Pineville Mo

Lazy Days Resort & Campground

  • Required to Rent Float Equipment to Camp Here
  • Tent Camping, RV Spots, and Cabins

While it is still very close to Pineville Missouri Lazy Days is another good campground option if you don’t want to be right in a town. It’s only two miles down the road but even a couple of miles can make a big difference.

One thing that we haven’t run into before is that you are required to rent floating equipment if you’re planning on camping there. While many of the campgrounds in the area offer float trips this is honestly the first time we have run into one that requires it.

Big Elk Floats & Camping

  • Lots of Float Trip Options
  • Primitive Camping, Electric Sites, and RV Sites
  • Volleyball Court

Big Elk Floats and Camping is probably the biggest outfitter/campground in Pineville so plan on making reservations early. They’re also a really good choice if you plan on kayaking the Elk River. While most outfitters will have some kayaks available Big Elk Float and Camping has a pretty big variety of kayaks.

They also have a lot of other amenities like a volleyball court and a general store. So if you’re looking for a place where you can camp and not have to leave for anything other than your float, Big Elk is a great choice.

Noel Mo Float Trips Wrap-Up

We hope this article helps you plan your Noel, MO float trip. Remember to make your reservations early if you’re planning on floating in the summer.

If you’re planning on going even further south be sure to check out the best float trips in Arkansas . The Buffalo River is our favorite, but honestly, there are a ton of great rivers in the area.

There are also a lot of great rivers close to St. Louis like the Black River and the Meramec River if you’re from St. Louis and don’t want to drive too far for a Missouri float trip.
