Hudson River

Flowing from the scenic Adirondack Mountains and emptying into Upper New York Bay in the heart of New York City, the Hudson River has been immortalized in everything from art history to pop culture. Cruises along this historic waterway glide past famous city spots while offering breathtaking vistas of the state’s landscape.

During the early 19th century, the 315-mile river was the chief way to travel and transport goods through eastern New York State. The region’s lush riverbanks and woodlands served as the home and inspiration of the Hudson River School, a group of 19th century romantic landscape painters that included artists such as Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church.

Port stops may include legendary Sleepy Hollow or Franklin D. Roosevelt’s estate of Springwood. You might also venture to Kingston’s "Millionaire Row," where wealthy New York businessmen bought property during the 1800s, or visit the campus grounds of West Point Military Academy.

These cruises are hassle-free and easy to budget, as so much is included in one price that you pay up front, including riverboat accommodations, most meals and some activities on board and on land.

Hudson River Facts

The Hudson River begins in the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. It flows in a southerly direction for about 315 miles before reaching its mouth at the Upper New York Bay . A natural border is formed by the Hudson River between New York City and New Jersey.

In addition to the Adirondack Mountains, there are a couple of other mountainous regions along the Hudson River. The Catskills and the Taconic Mountains are located on opposite sides of the river in the Hudson Valley. The Taconic Range has an elevation of about 3,800 feet. The mountains are located on the east side of the river and are connected to the Appalachian Mountains. On the west side of the Hudson, the Catskills are nearly 4,200 feet above sea level. This region of the Hudson is about 86 miles south of Albany.

To the south of the Hudson Valley, Bear Mountain is also a pretty area on the west side of the Hudson River. Not quite as tall as the other two mountain ranges, it reaches an elevation of about 1,300 feet.

Essential New York

As the great Al Green (and later David Byrne of the Talking Heads) sang, “take me to the river,” let us head out to the home of some of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Ellis Island National Monument and the Statue of Liberty along the Hudson River. The Hudson River is a 315-mile river that flows from north to south primarily through eastern New York originating in the Adirondack Mountains.  Hudson River boat tours are perfect for families, couples, and friends looking for something fun and exciting to do together without having to leave Manhattan

As a defining natural feature in a major region such as New York, you can drive across its bridges, admire its beauty from parks and historic sites, or enjoy the views from the best spot-the water!

Hudson River Sightseeing Cruises

There are various options for your river cruise, depending on the time of day, year, what you’re celebrating, or if it’s just for a leisurely time on the water. But no matter when you go, you will see the magnificent NYC skyline from the west side and the Jersey City skyline from the east. So you will enjoy views from all directions.

The river flows almost entirely within the state, except for its final segment where it forms the boundary between New York and New Jersey.

And if you check the water periodically, you may see seals and the occasional dolphin playing with a kayaker , just a few of the over seventy creatures that call the Hudson River home. As one news report recently  noted, “The many creatures of the Hudson River may surprise you.” For the full eco-experience, go paddling on the Hudson! You can rent kayaks at Hudson River Park in lower Manhattan.

People cheering on the Bateaux with Fall foliage and New York City skyline in background.

Lunch, Brunch, and Dinner Cruises on the Hudson

If you would rather kick back and drink in the views over a sumptuous meal on the water, dining cruises are available throughout the year.

There is no better way to see the iconic views of New York City than from the climate-controlled glass-enclosed deck inspired by European design. Imagine the beautiful views from a luxurious perspective.

Lunch and brunch cruises are usually two hours, while dinner cruises are typically three hours. Lunch cruises tend to be more casual than dinner cruises, making them ideal for a family or group outing. On the other hand, dinner cruises specialize in accommodating couples and friend groups looking for more of a night out.

Whether it is for brunch, lunch, or dinner, you can expect a freshly prepared meal complete with salads and desserts to please your palate while enjoying curated music and light narration. Some even offer a live pianist to accompany your voyage.

Holiday Cruises on the Hudson River

A holiday harbor river cruise in New York City is a great way to see the city’s world-renowned landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Battery Park. There is something for everyone for all occasions, from Valentine’s Day and Easter to the 4th of July, New Year’s Eve, and Mother’s Day.

You can celebrate virtually any holiday while cruising along to panoramic views.

Take your pick of brunch, lunch, or dinner holiday cruises. But book early–these always sell out.

The Palisades Cliffs

Sometimes, nature is the best tonic—even when visiting NYC. And If you’re in NYC during the fall, there’s no need to take a car to see the leaves change colors. You can simply hop on a boat. So climb aboard a Fall Foliage Cruise that meanders up the Hudson River. Be sure to marvel at the Palisade Cliffs just past the George Washington Bridge. The Palisades are a geological wonder that dates back to 200 million years ago and was almost lost to industry, but luckily you can still appreciate their unique history and explore them today.

And if you go during the Fall or Spring bird migration season, be sure to bring your binoculars! The Hudson River (and all of New York City ) is part of the Atlantic Flyway , so don’t miss this winged spectacle.

The Palisades Cliffs Hudson River New York

Breakneck Ridge in Hudson Highlands State Park

Let’s say you still want to experience the Hudson River—but from a breathtaking vantage point that is outside NYC. Then consider a day trip to Breakneck Ridge, which is about 60 miles north of the city and accessible via Metro North train  (at Grand Central Station). It’s a hiking trail in the Hudson Highlands that winds through scenic forestland and past rocky cliffs. The trail’s name comes from its incline—it’s one of the steepest trails in the United States, with an average grade of about 45 degrees. So wear a sturdy pair of sneakers and watch your step!

Native Americans and European settlers used the area surrounding Breakneck Ridge for centuries as a place to hunt and fish. It was also a significant lookout point during the Revolutionary War called “Beacon Hill.”

Guaranteed: You will enjoy stunning panoramic views from atop Breakneck Ridge. The view is nothing short of spectacular.

In addition to being an excellent hiking destination, Breakneck Ridge also serves as part of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area . This organization works to protect beautiful natural areas throughout New York State.

The Hudson River has something for everyone. It’s where you go to see the grandeur of the NYC skyline or dazzling nature. Again, as a famous song says, “take me to the river.”

The Hudson River’s History

Experience a journey back in time as you cruise the Hudson River. This storied river has been a witness to American history, from the early days of Native American settlements to pivotal Revolutionary War moments. Imagine the river bustling with steamboats during the Industrial Revolution, a testament to America’s growth. Each bend in the river tells a tale, making your cruise not just a scenic excursion, but a voyage through the pages of history.

The Hudson River, a defining feature of New York’s landscape, has played a pivotal role in shaping both the state and the nation’s history. This majestic river, stretching 315 miles from the Adirondack Mountains to the Battery in New York City, has witnessed centuries of transformative events.

A Cruiser’s Guide to Photography

For photography enthusiasts, a Hudson River cruise is a dream come true. With the ever-changing landscapes and the Manhattan skyline as your backdrop, every click of the camera captures a unique story. The golden hour, just before sunset, offers magical lighting for perfect shots. Tips? Focus on contrasts – the tranquil waters against the vibrant cityscape. Whether you’re a pro or just starting, the Hudson offers a canvas for your photography aspirations.

Seasonal Splendors: The Hudson River Through the Year

The Hudson River is a chameleon, changing its hues and moods with the seasons. Summer brings sparkling waters and lively shores, while fall transforms the riverbanks into a tapestry of oranges and reds. Winter coats the landscape in serene whites and silvers, offering a tranquil beauty. Each season on the Hudson has its own charm, making it a year-round destination for those seeking natural beauty and a touch of adventure.

Day vs. Night: Two Faces of the Hudson River Cruise

Experiencing the Hudson River by day and night are two sides of the same coin. Daytime cruises offer clear views of the natural beauty and landmarks along the river, perfect for those who want to soak in every detail. As night falls, the river adopts a new persona – the city lights reflecting on the water create a dazzling spectacle, making evening cruises ideal for a romantic outing or a relaxing end to your day.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly taking a decommissioned New York City fireboat for an overnight cruise on the Hudson River, before becoming stuck, jumping ship and stealing another vessel, police said.

He was charged with two counts of grand larceny, officials said. He had not been arraigned as of Thursday afternoon and it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The man commandeered the fireboat, known as the John J. Harvey, by untying it from its mooring at Pier 66 off the west side of Manhattan, according to authorities. The 130 foot (40 meter) long vessel, which now serves as a museum, earned local acclaim after it was used to evacuate survivors of 9/11.

Once aboard the fireboat, the man was able to drift a short distance into the Hudson River, police said, but quickly got stuck. He leapt overboard, plunging into the frigid waters and later emerging on a second stolen vessel, according to police.

He navigated that sailboat toward Pier 51, roughly 15 blocks south of the original location, police said. The department’s Harbor Unit responded to a 2:30 a.m. call about a stolen boat and arrested the man on the sailboat’s deck.

A spokesperson for the Hudson River Park Trust, which oversees Pier 66, said the fireboat is secure and being assessed for damage.

Built in 1931, the Harvey assisted in several dramatic marine rescues, helping to put out a potentially catastrophic fire aboard the El Estero, a munitions ship docked in the New York Harbor during World War II.

It was retired in 1994, but was called back into service on the morning of 9/11 to help pick up survivors and to pump water onto the site.

The boat’s caretakers offer occasional free public cruises along the Hudson River.

A man has been arrested for allegedly taking a decommissioned New York City fireboat for an overnight cruise on the Hudson River , before becoming stuck, jumping ship and stealing another vessel, police said.

The man was charged on Thursday with two counts of grand larceny, officials said.

He had not been arraigned as of Thursday afternoon and it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The man commandeered the fireboat, known as the John J. Harvey, by untying it from its mooring at Pier 66 off the west side of Manhattan , according to authorities.

When to Watch the Solar Eclipse in New York City

W hile New York City isn’t in the path of totality for this eclipse, a partial eclipse (89%) will be visible starting around 3:25 p.m. That is enough reason to head to the Top of the Rock , a.k.a. the roof of Rockefeller Center, and take in the view of the city and the sky above. One World Observatory , which boasts the highest observation deck in the Western Hemisphere, is also planning an eclipse party.

For those looking to commune with nature during the celestial event, Shirley Chisholm State Park in Brooklyn is hosting a low-key — and free — viewing party on the banks of Jamaica Bay. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is hosting a gathering as well, inviting folks to watch the sky among the flowers. Alternatively, Wave Hill in the Bronx is throwing an eclipse party overlooking the Hudson River. In case of inclement weather, the party moves indoors with a livestream and access to historic Wave Hill House. To watch the eclipse from the water, set sail with Classic Harbor Line for a cruise along the Hudson.

Anyone contemplating their place in the universe can head to Green-Wood Cemetery for a viewing party and sound bath. The scientists at both the New York Hall of Science in Queens and Manhattan’s American Museum of Natural History are hosting astronomy-themed parties.

Note: The times in this simulation might differ from other sources of eclipse data by a minute or two. The discrepancy is most likely a small difference in the precise location of the calculation or a slightly different way of accounting for the time it takes the speed of light to travel from the sun to the Earth.
