New York's tourism board has launched its 'Halal Guide to New York'. Narisa Ladak/Handout

In May, New York City’s tourism board, NYCgo, launched its “Halal Travel Guide” to New York. It highlights major sights in each of the city’s five boroughs as well as halal dining options, Muslim-friendly hotels and places for prayer, along with recommendations from locals who are part of the city’s Islamic community.

It’s not the first cultural-specific guide NYCgo has issued – the board has content for those specifically interested in the Asian, Black and Latino takes on the city – but the halal guide is the first of its kind published by a U.S. tourism organization. (A spokesperson for Destination Canada, our national tourism organization, said she doesn’t know of any Canadian organizations that have a similar guide.)

CrescentRating, a research and consultant firm for halal travel, worked with NYCgo to compile the guide. “They reached out to us and said, ‘Look, we’re interested in this market,’ ” says Fazal Bahardeen, founder and CEO of Singapore-based CrescentRating. Discussions started simply as advice on how to raise awareness of New York as a destination within this community before culminating in the creation of the guide. The Arabic version will be released this month, he adds.

According to CrescentRating, the Muslim traveller market is a valuable one. By 2028, it’s expected Muslims will spend US$225-billion on travel, led in large part by Gen Zs, millennials and women – the latter making up 45 per cent of Muslim travellers. In other words, this is a tourist the travel industry should be interested in courting.

Zaakirah Karbary is one of them. The 25-year-old, who lives in Mississauga, typically travels once a month. A practising Muslim, she describes herself as a “very spontaneous traveller” – she had just returned from Switzerland a few hours before speaking with The Globe – who opts for destinations that have outdoor options, like hiking or a boat tour. She has a food and travel blog, ieattravelwrite.com , and has published a children’s activity book, Passport to Adventure , to inspire kids to explore the world.

Karbary wears a hijab and has found it to be a way to connect with others, especially with locals, and particularly in destinations that aren’t predominantly Muslim. During a trip to Tahiti with her mother earlier this year, she says she knew she would likely be the only female traveller wearing a scarf. “But I didn’t mind that,” she says. “Surprisingly, on one of the islands we met other Muslims who live there. They were shocked to find a hijabi there.” And on her first cruise, Karbary bonded with crew members from Indonesia who were happy to see a Muslim traveller on board. That pride “is one of the things I try to portray by going to certain destinations,” she says.

After getting requests from some of her readers to travel with her, Karbary is starting to plan group trips for female Muslim travellers, which she’ll host next year.

A 2019 report on Muslim women travellers by Mastercard and CrescentRating showed that the vast majority of the time (71 per cent) women are going on holiday, they’re doing it with family, while roughly a third of trips are taken as part of an all-female group, solo or in a mixed-gender group (29, 28 and 22 per cent respectively). And 90 per cent of them are travelling for leisure, rather than business or other reasons.

But Rafat Ali, founder and CEO of Skift, the travel industry’s leading news source, says that even many Muslim countries don’t have these tourists on their radars. “It is amazing how many Muslim countries don’t think about attracting Muslim family travellers, because the perception of attracting white, Western travellers has more prestige for them, which is a pity,” he says. “Just look at all the MENA [Middle East and North Africa] region countries rushing to open up to tourism, look at their emphasis and marketing. It is obvious what they are hoping versus what is the real long-term market.” On Sept. 2, for instance, Skift published a story indicating that Morocco was likely to be the next popular destination for remote workers.

Part of the problem may be the way travel journalism – a key means of getting a destination in front of potential tourists – is executed. In August, Ali tweeted about a travel story in The Guardian about Albania: “Not a single world about it being a majority Muslim country,” going on to say that it was a missed opportunity to highlight why Albania is worth diving into, for Muslim and non-Muslim travellers alike.

“Very few of these mainstream media writers are non-Western, most of them are white,” he says when asked about what media could be doing better. “Most of these are freelancers these days, poorly paid and poorly edited, so in-depth research, long-term travel to get a deeper sense of the destination and deeper understanding of the complexities of a country like Albania are, well, hoping for too much.”

The needs and wants of these travellers aren’t significantly different from any other. Ideally there’ll be private spaces with running water for women to perform wudhu, a cleansing ritual, as well as female-only facilities, say a changing room at a gym or women-only hours at a hotel pool. But these travellers are also looking for places where they feel safe, welcome and part of a community.

And as the industry increasingly guides tourists to modes of travel that are more culturally sensitive and environmentally responsible, Muslim travellers are already seeking out these kinds of experiences. Bahardeen notes that significant drivers for younger Muslim travellers are social causes and the environment – being able to give back to the communities they’re visiting and embracing eco-friendly tourism practices.

Indeed, these are priorities when Karbary travels. “I try to support as much locally as I can,” she says. “It’s a very humbling experience, but you learn a lot, about yourself and get to see the world from a different perspective.”

Bahardeen says that most of the work CrescentRating does now is with non-Muslim countries, including Hong Kong, Singapore and Spain. “And we are in discussions with a number of European ones,” he says.

The goal is to get these tourism boards to realize the potential of the market. And the gestures matter, even if it’s just a 24-page guide. “It’s a message,” he says. “We are open to welcoming Muslims.”

HalalBooking's Top Travel Trends 2024

2024 promises to be an exciting year for Muslim travellers seeking a trip that caters for their faith and priorities. Whether you're looking for immersive cultural experiences, quality family time, personal rejuvenation or simply to find a bargain, there's something for everyone this year. As pioneers in this space, HalalBooking stays ahead, connects you with the latest trends and helps you book the most sought-after trips.

Here are 8 top Muslim travel trends in 2024:

1.Set-Jetting

Set-jetting refers to the growing travel trend of visiting locations from movies and TV shows . The term originated in the late noughties but has gained popularity recently as PR firms and tourist boards capitalise on the popularity of streaming services.

For Muslim travellers, these cinematic destinations offer cultural and religious familiarity amidst the Hollywood glamour. Classic cinema fans can visit Jordan ’s Wadi Rum , scene of the 1962 epic, Lawrence of Arabia or for more recent cinematic adventures, the ancient city of Petra (also in Jordan ) which features in the escapades of Indiana Jones .

Alternatively, visit the set of the Star Wars hotel , an ancient troglodyte building in the Berber village of Matmata in the Tunisian desert or transport yourself into legendary scripts like Gladiator , which was in part filmed in the historic fortified Moroccan village of Aït Benhaddou .

For those streaming hit Turkish shows, historic sites from Resurrection: Ertuğrul to The Last Emperor have sparked interest. For example, you can check out our dedicated blog article on the Legacy of Ertuğrul and visit the city of Bursa — the warrior's final resting place.

2.Wellness escapes

Wellness holidays have become increasingly popular as travellers seek holidays centred around personal health and rejuvenation . Even among Western travellers, the alcohol-free getaways focused on holistic wellbeing have become a trend.

So, it's no surprise that more people seek to use their precious annual leave to relax, unwind and enjoy the peaceful natural scenery. As 2024 begins, this growing desire to spend holidays nourishing the mind, body and spirit shows no signs of slowing.

Türkiye offers great value options with its long hammam tradition and thermal waters. Find women-only spas at resort hotels such as the Royal Teos Thermal Resort Wellness & Spa , which has a stunning beachfront located and offers ladies-only and family beaches and outdoor pools, as well as extensive ladies-only and men-only thermal spa centres.

3.Go-ccasions

A go-ccasion is a portmanteau of "goal" and "occasion". It refers to a milestone event you celebrate or acknowledge with a trip or holiday .

Go-occasions can be important life moments like a wedding anniversary, having children, getting a new job, reaching retirement or even commemorating going on a pilgrimage. For example, many people mark the moment they perform Hajj by going on Umrah — it reminds them of that once-in-a-lifetime trip and helps with their personal growth and connection to their faith. For inspiration and information on how to organise your Umrah, read our dedicated blog: Our Guide to DIY Umrah: The Most Rewarding Trip .

You can craft customised tours, activities, and accommodation tailored to the occasion, whether you're celebrating new beginnings, midlife reflections, or relationships.

4.Extended family retreats

Spending quality time with family tops the priority list for many when planning holidays. But have you thought about going on holiday with the extended family? In 2024, trips with extended relatives — like grandparents, siblings, nieces and nephews — will gain popularity.

Muslim families have long been renowned for multigenerational living — and everyone going on holiday together is a natural continuation of this tradition. Often, extended family vacations involve venturing to ancestral homelands together. But increasingly, people are breaking from that status quo, wanting new holiday experiences with the broader family elsewhere.

Renting private villas or homes has become a rising trend for Muslim families. This accommodation offers spaciousness, privacy, and a home-like atmosphere that helps create lasting memories. Whether the whole clan decamps for a reunion in Antalya or books a villa in Morocco , Spain or Kalkan , make a family get-together even more special by going on holiday together.

5.Book early to save

The cost-of-living crisis, inflation, and rising travel costs have led many holidaymakers to consider booking trips closer to their departure dates. However, on HalalBooking.com the best deals are always to be found by early bookers . Take advantage of exclusive Early Booking Discounts by booking as soon as possible and looking out for price rise emails.

Even if you’re not completely sure of your holiday plans, you can book early and select free cancellation prices , locking current prices as a hedge against future cost increases from inflation, fuel surcharges or currency fluctuations. If your plans change you can cancel and rebook.

Early booking allows travellers to guarantee prices and manage budgets. Free cancellations mean you can adjust plans if needed, which provides financial peace during the turbulent economic climate. You can also make use of Book now, pay later options to budget for your holiday with little or no deposit required.

6.Affordable alternatives

One way to save money is by visiting budget-friendly destinations that offer experiences similar to those in more expensive locations . These lesser-known locations can provide the same grandeur and excitement for a fraction of the price.

Instead of Maldives , why not check out Tanzania , Zanzibar , Mauritius , Indonesia , Malaysia and Thailand ? And Dubai isn't the only place to take your instagram friendly snaps, try Morocco .

In 2024, travellers will seek affordable yet culturally rich destinations that offer immersive experiences without breaking the bank.

From exploring historic cities in Türkiye or Andalusia , to discovering the natural beauty of destinations like Bosnia and Herzegovina , these locations present opportunities to delve into local culture and explore historical landmarks without compromising on quality experiences.

7.Sun, sea & (halal) sangria

We've all grown up seeing our peers jet off to beach holidays, lazing about all-inclusive resorts for a week of sunbathing and feasting. For practising Muslims, especially Muslim women who require secluded ladies-only spaces, such carefree indulgence was just a mirage until recently. Although sightseeing has its pleasures, sometimes all we crave is to lie on a lounger, sip a mocktail and read a book while the kids play freely in the pool.

halal travel is now gaining popularity

Thankfully, the rise of inclusive halal resorts allows Muslim families to do just that. And with more hotels catering to a Muslim audience , this trend is set to continue in 2024. These destinations feature halal dining, prayer rooms, spas, beaches and pools in women-only areas , enabling women to swim and soak up the rays without compromise. With recreational activities abiding by Islamic ethics, Muslim families can now opt for inclusive resort holidays just like everyone else!

8.Umrah plus

Umrah is always a rewarding experience, but now that the Saudi government has relaxed worldwide visa restrictions, it’s so much easier to plan your own DIY trip and take in other destinations , as well as the holy cities. Jeddah is the historic gateway to Makkah and Madinah , sitting on the beautiful Red Sea coast with its beaches and clear waters. Stay for a few days to enjoy the beach and explore its historic old city with its atmospheric houses and gates, which were so significant for pilgrims of the past, reaching them, often after months of travelling.

Alternatively, plan a stop-over on your way to Umrah - Istanbul or Dubai are great choices each offering a unique blend of culture and relaxation.

Key Factors Driving the Halal Tourism Market

Sustainable Growth is bolstered by the Rising Eco Conscious and Halal Friendly Tourists

One distinct driver of the halal tourism sector is the increased demand for sustainable and ethical travel experiences among environmentally conscious Muslim travelers. These people look for locations and offerings that complement their moral principles, such as eco-friendly activities and lodging with halal certification.

The convergence of ecotourism and halal creates a niche market that spurs innovation in sustainable hospitality and promotes vacation locations that balance environmental stewardship with Islamic values in order to meet the changing needs of Muslim tourists throughout the globe.

Factors that can impede the Market Growth

Growth in Halal Tourism is hampered by Global Uniformity, Cultural Sensitivity, and Competition

The halal tourism sector encounters challenges such as providing similar halal certification standards across the world, since differences in criteria and execution can cause misunderstanding among tourists and companies.

Certain holiday destinations may provide difficulties due to political unrest and cultural sensitivities, which might affect the availability of halal amenities and the quality of the entire trip. The potential of the business cannot be completely realized due to competition from non-halal tourist industries and the need for more knowledge and education regarding halal travel possibilities.

Best Halal Travel Destinations To Visit In 2023

halal travel is now gaining popularity

May 29, 2018 •

3 min reading

Spending by Muslim travelers is expected to rise to US$220 billion by 2020, with the number of Muslim tourists growing to 156 million from 121 million in 2016. That’s according to the Global Muslim Travel Index (GTMI) 2017, which was produced by Mastercard and CrescentRating, a ‘halal-friendly’ travel consultancy.

‘Halal’ tourism is clearly a growing market segment, with Muslim tourists seeking destinations which meet their needs, in terms of diet, dress or rituals. Translated from Arabic, ‘halal’ means permissible in accordance with Islamic teaching. Alcohol, pork, nudity and gambling are off limits.

With a burgeoning middle class and increasing disposable income, many countries – whether Muslim or not – are looking to attract these travelers. Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Turkey are among the leading Muslim destinations. Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom are among the top non-Islamic or OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) destinations.

Despite being a predominantly Buddhist country, albeit with a sizeable Muslim population in the south, Thailand has proved to be a popular destination for Muslims, mainly from Indonesia looking for affordable vacations and Thai food. As for the UK, Muslim spending is expected to rise to US$4.1 billion by 2020 even though there has been a spike in Islamophobic assaults following recent terror attacks in London and Manchester.

Halal_Tourism_Top_Destinations

Adapting to the needs of Muslim travelers

Given the potential of this sector, it’s important for the hospitality industry to adapt to changing halal requirements to meet the needs of Muslim tourists. According to CrescentRating, hotels and restaurants should offer halal food at the very least. A destination is then seen as increasingly attractive for Muslim travelers – as assessed in the GTMI ranking – based on the availability of prayer facilities, Muslim-friendly washrooms and Ramadan-related offerings. While many airports are now offering halal food and prayer rooms, some still lack wash or ablution facilities.

Shaping the future with technology

In addition to more traditional online travel agencies or OTAs such as booking.com or TripAdvisor, Muslim-friendly platforms are springing up. Take for instance Halalbooking.com , a London-based market place for halal tourist accommodation that is expecting to achieve revenues of at least one billion pounds by the end of 2021.

Peer-to-peer platforms are also emerging. Bookhalalhomes.com has become the world’s leading portal for halal accommodation rentals. It differentiates itself from Airbnb by guaranteeing halal-certified services such as halal food and designated prayer rooms.

Smartphone apps are also being developed. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched an app that helps Muslim travelers find halal products and services. It provides information about prayer times, food options and sightseeing tours. Another app, HalalTrip , offers information related to more than 65 destinations worldwide. It generates revenue by selling suitable tour packages, whether it’s experiencing Great White Sharks in South Africa, culture and history in Spain, or shopping in Dubai.

Compared to more established western OTAs though, halal tourism e-commerce is still in its infancy. As we’ve outlined, however, it’s a growing market that needs to be served. Technology will continue to shape the growth of the sector by allowing hoteliers, restaurateurs and others to demonstrate that they are sensitive to halal requirements.

How innovation affects demand

With spending by Muslim travelers on course to reach US$220 billion by 2020, and Islam the fastest-growing religion in the world, Muslim tourists are definitely some of the most important customers in the travel market.

Pull factors such as family-friendly and Muslim-friendly services are important, as is halal awareness. Where safety concerns and basic halal requirements are met, Muslim tourism will continue to grow.

As for technology, halal tech firms appear to have established a first-mover advantage. But it’s only a matter of time before major western OTAs enter and seek to dominate this promising market.

Discovering halal tourism

Liju Cherian

Muscat: Within the realm of diverse culinary preferences, Halal food has gained widespread popularity. However, a burgeoning concept that is gradually gaining momentum is halal tourism.

The Muslim travel market, boasting an estimated value of approximately $250 billion, is undergoing a rapid transformation. At the forefront of this evolution is the Halal Travel Guide (HTG), offering a tailored experience for Muslim travellers worldwide.

With a dedicated following across the UK, US, Europe, Indonesia and Malaysia, HTG boasts over 40,000 followers and subscribers through the HTG Club, establishing itself as a trendsetter in the industry.

Committed to crafting exceptional tours with Muslim travellers in mind, their group tours go beyond traditional sightseeing. Connecting participants with stories from Islamic heritage, breathtaking natural scenery and delectable halal food, HTG aims to foster lifelong memories and friendships.

Their mission is to make travel accessible, enjoyable and fulfilling for all, focusing on breaking down barriers and fostering connections. Collaborating closely with local guides and experts ensures unique and meaningful experiences that delve into local customs and traditions.

HTG founder Soumaya T Hamdi envisions a holistic approach to halal tourism as the market expands. Beyond catering to specific dietary needs and modest swimwear, HTG emphasises tourism that benefits local communities, destinations and travellers.

HTG collaborated with local partner Infinite Tours as they were thrilled to introduce an enchanting trip to Oman, known for preserving its rich heritage. This underscored the importance of working closely with reliable local partners to provide exceptional service.

The budget-friendly adventure through Oman showcased authenticity, excitement and new experiences. From exploring Muscat’s highlights to relaxing at Fins beach and spending a night under the star-filled sky at a Bedouin Desert Camp, the limited-edition trip showcased Oman’s beauty while supporting the local community.

For Muslim travellers seeking a deeper connection with the world, HTG invited enthusiasts to explore the wonders of Oman. The journey combined cultural immersion with breathtaking landscapes.

Soumaya’s personal journey into the world of travel, traversing diverse cultures with her family, led to a profound understanding of the importance of cultural sensitivity. Meeting Saud al Junaidy, Founder and General Manager of Infinite Tours, at World Travel Market in 2022 reinforced the shared values and vision for tourism.

Saud says it was a fulfilling journey partnering with HTG to operate the special Islamic tour of Oman. “Through showcasing Oman’s rich Islamic heritage, history and breathtaking natural sites, we aim to bridge cultural understanding. Interactions with Al Muatasim al Saadi, our guide, and the locals revealed Omanis’ profound religious tolerance, emphasising respect for diverse sects and religions. "This experience reinforced the beauty of unity in diversity, making Oman a beacon of harmony and coexistence,” he adds.

Soumaya further adds that Halal tourism extends beyond pilgrimage and enables Muslim travellers to explore the globe authentically. “Our approach prioritises cultural immersion, from relishing authentic local halal food to ensuring Muslim women can enjoy beach and pool experiences,” she mentions.

The trip was led by Giannisa Novi Budiutami, an Indonesian, and HTG Tour Leader. Others included participants from the UK such as Resham Mirza, Alan Smith, Haroon Jogyat, Aisha Patel, Sarika Khatun, Shamedha Khanom, Fhatama Begum and Hannah Hamid, all first time travellers to Oman.

Aisha Patel shares her experience, “Oman felt safe and welcoming, and the hospitality was second to none. I would recommend Oman as a destination in a heartbeat. The history, food, people and sights were all fascinating, and the attention to detail provided by Infinite Tours was greatly appreciated. Thank you for hosting us in your wonderful country. I’ll be back one day!”

From Niche to Mainstream: The Evolving Landscape of Halal Travel and Its Impact on B2B Players

halal travel is now gaining popularity

The global travel and tourism industry is currently in the midst of a noteworthy transformation, largely propelled by the increasing demand for halal travel . What was once considered a niche market has now evolved into a mainstream force, exerting a considerable influence on the overall landscape of the industry. Halal travel, rooted in adherence to Islamic principles and guidelines, has gained prominence, necessitating a strategic understanding of the needs and preferences of Muslim travelers by B2B players.

In this shifting landscape, businesses involved in business-to-business (B2B) interactions have the opportunity to respond proactively to the changing dynamics. By discerning the specific requirements of Muslim travelers, B2B players can embark on the development of innovative products, services, and experiences tailored to the distinct preferences of this expanding market. This strategic approach is crucial for effectively meeting the evolving demands of the halal travel sector and establishing a competitive edge within the broader travel and tourism industry.

The Rise of Halal Travel

Halal travel is one of the fastest-growing segments of the global travel and tourism industry. According to the latest Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2023 report by CrescentRating and Mastercard, Muslim traveler arrivals are projected to reach a staggering 140 million in 2023, recovering from the pandemic's impact. This represents a significant growth from the 110 million Muslim travelers in 2022. By 2028, Muslim traveler arrivals are expected to reach 230 million, generating an estimated expenditure of USD 225 billion.

The Evolving Landscape of Halal Travel

The halal travel market is currently experiencing a notable transformation, marked by several key trends. One significant shift is the diversification of halal travel destinations. Previously limited to the Middle East and Southeast Asia, Muslim travelers are now broadening their horizons, venturing into new territories such as Europe, North America, and Latin America.

Moreover, there is a growing demand for diverse halal experiences among Muslim travelers. It's no longer solely about securing halal-compliant accommodations and transportation; rather, there is an increasing desire for a comprehensive array of halal experiences. This includes seeking out halal food options, engaging in halal activities, and exploring halal family-friendly attractions .

In tandem with these changes, technology has emerged as a pivotal player in the halal travel industry. Muslim travelers are increasingly relying on various apps and websites to facilitate their journeys. These digital tools not only assist in identifying halal travel options but also streamline the booking process. Additionally, technology serves as a means for Muslim travelers to connect with like-minded individuals, creating a sense of community within the halal travel sphere.

The Strategic Imperative: Compelling Reasons for Businesses to Embrace the Muslim Travel Market

In the wake of the post-COVID growth phase, the Muslim travel market stands as a beacon of opportunity for global destinations and businesses. Beyond the conventional offerings of halal meals and prayer spaces, a strategic approach is imperative to tap into the exponential potential of this burgeoning market segment. According to GMTI 2023 Report, there are six compelling reasons why businesses and destinations should strategically embrace the Muslim travel market

1. Enhancing Destination Appeal

By showcasing inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, destinations can attract a broader range of travelers. This positive perception not only leads to increased tourism but also earns international recognition, benefiting local businesses and the overall economy.

2. Rapidly Growing Market

With the global Muslim population projected to reach 2.3 billion by 2030, representing 27% of the global population, the Muslim travel market is witnessing remarkable growth. This presents an unparalleled opportunity for destinations to cater to the evolving preferences of Muslim travelers seeking new experiences worldwide.

3. High Spending Potential

Muslim travelers, often exploring as families, possess a notable spending capacity, particularly in travel, accommodation, and dining. Businesses stand to benefit by tailoring their services to meet the specific needs of this demographic, capitalizing on their propensity for higher spending.

4. Cultivating Brand Loyalty

Understanding and catering to the cultural and faith-based requirements of Muslim travelers can foster strong brand loyalty. By providing services like halal food options and prayer facilities , businesses can not only ensure repeat visits but also benefit from positive word-of-mouth referrals.

5. Competitive Advantage

Businesses and destinations that proactively cater to the unique needs of Muslim travelers gain a significant competitive edge. Offering tailored services and facilities allows them to differentiate themselves in the market and attract a larger share of this rapidly growing demographic.

6. Socially Responsible Tourism

Demonstrating commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and cultural understanding, businesses can contribute to responsible and sustainable tourism practices. This aligns with the growing trend towards socially responsible tourism, promoting cross-cultural exchange and benefiting the local community.

Strategic focus on the Muslim travel market is not just a business decision, but also a commitment to growth, inclusivity, and responsible tourism practices. By developing thoughtful strategies, businesses can unlock new revenue streams, establish lasting brand loyalty, and position themselves as leaders in the evolving landscape of global travel.

Halal Travel Impacts: Transformative Strategies for B2B Players

The burgeoning halal travel market is not merely a niche trend but a transformative force that is profoundly impacting the strategies and operations of B2B players in the global travel and tourism industry. As the demand for halal travel experiences surges, B2B players are recognizing the immense potential this market holds, prompting a shift in their approach to cater to the specific needs and preferences of Muslim travelers.

The GMTI 2023 report by CrescentRating and Mastercard highlights the exponential growth of the Muslim travel market, with Muslim traveler arrivals projected to reach 230 million by 2028. This surge in demand presents a wealth of opportunities for B2B players to expand their customer base, enhance revenue streams, and establish themselves as leaders in the halal travel sector.

To effectively tap into this growing market, B2B players must adapt their strategies to align with the evolving needs and preferences of Muslim travelers. This involves several comprehensive approaches listed below.

1. Understanding Halal Travel Principles

Gaining a thorough understanding of Islamic principles and guidelines governing halal travel is essential to developing and offering products and services that meet the expectations of Muslim travelers.

2. Developing Halal-compliant Products and Services

B2B players should prioritize the development of halal-compliant products and services across various aspects of the travel experience, including accommodations, transportation, activities, and dining options.

3. Partnerships and Collaborations

Strategic partnerships with halal travel providers, organizations, and influencers can provide valuable insights and expertise in navigating the nuances of the halal travel market.

4. Tailored Marketing and Communication

Effective marketing campaigns that resonate with Muslim travelers' values and aspirations are crucial to reach this audience effectively. Clear and transparent communication about halal offerings is essential to build trust and confidence.

5. Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness

Embracing cultural sensitivity and awareness is paramount to providing a respectful and welcoming experience for Muslim travelers. This includes understanding and accommodating their religious practices, dietary preferences, and cultural norms.

6. Investing in Halal Travel Training

Investing in training and education for employees about halal travel principles and practices ensures that hospitality staff can provide culturally sensitive and respectful service to Muslim guests.

The impact of halal travel extends beyond the mere provision of halal-compliant products and services. It is driving a paradigm shift in the hospitality industry, prompting B2B players to redefine their standards of service and hospitality to cater to the specific needs and preferences of Muslim travelers. This includes:

  • Ensuring Prayer Facilities and Amenities : Providing readily accessible and well-maintained prayer facilities is essential for Muslim travelers.
  • Offering Halal Food Options : A wide range of halal food options, prepared according to Islamic guidelines, should be readily available throughout the travel experience.
  • Respecting Privacy and Modesty : Understanding and respecting Islamic principles of privacy and modesty is crucial to creating a comfortable and culturally sensitive environment for Muslim travelers.
  • Providing Family-Friendly Amenities : Catering to the needs of Muslim families, such as providing family-friendly accommodations, activities, and dining options, is essential to attract this growing segment of travelers.

The impact of halal travel on B2B players extends beyond financial gains and market expansion. It represents a transformative journey that encourages the industry to embrace diversity, cultural sensitivity, and a deeper understanding of Islamic values.

By adapting their strategies and redefining their hospitality standards, B2B players can not only tap into a lucrative market but also contribute to the overall growth and development of the halal travel industry, shaping a more inclusive and respectful travel landscape for Muslim travelers worldwide.

The Future of Halal Travel

The future of halal travel is bright. The Muslim travel market is expected to continue to grow in the years to come, and B2B players that can effectively cater to this market will be well-positioned for success.

In addition to the factors mentioned above, several other trends are expected to shape the future of halal travel, including:

  • Increased personalization : Muslim travelers are increasingly demanding personalized travel experiences. B2B players will need to use data and technology to provide personalized halal travel experiences.
  • Sustainable halal travel : Muslim travelers are increasingly interested in sustainable travel practices. B2B players will need to develop sustainable halal travel products and services.
  • The rise of the Muslim Millennial and Gen Z traveler : Muslim millennials and Gen Zs are a growing segment of the halal travel market. B2B players will need to understand the preferences of these groups and develop products and services that appeal to them.

Halal tourism gaining popularity in middle east.

DUBAI — A fresh concept in exhibitions and travel — Halal Tourism — is gaining ground in the region. Attracting visitors and participants to the exhibitions is big business these days as the demand for Halal products is on the rise.

Halal Islamic Shariah-compliant products and services, with an estimated 1.8 billion world consumers, generating as much as $2.1 trillion annually, is gaining more popularity not only among Muslims but also among non-Muslims, regardless of their ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, according to industry experts who spoke to Khaleej Times .

Introducing a new concept of ‘Halal Tourism’, the Al Jawhara Hospitality Group (JHG) based in Dubai, brought on show the ‘Pure Rooms’ event, the first of its kind in the Middle East that strictly adheres to Islamic hospitality.

Hani Lashin, JHG general manager said the group was following international standards though offering totally Halal services. “No liquor is allowed within our apartments and hotels,” Lashin said adding that the entire foodstuff presented is Halal and contains no pork or unlawfully slaughtered animals.

Observing that some 60 to 70 per cent of the group’s customers are non-Muslims, Lashin said the company follows a strict dress code and does not tolerate allow for men and women to mingle or mix in public places, offering separate cafeterias, restaurants and swimming pools.

The exhibition saw “Cham’ alal”, the first Halal champagne.

“Our product, which is 100 per cent alcohol free, is certified by the Muslim Institute of Meats and Food Processing Industry and manufactured by UK-based Rothwell Drinks Company,” said Gacem Rachid, development director.

The new product, which was very tasty, would be available in the UAE at affordable prices. “We are now looking for distributors for our ideal beverage, which is suitable for small and big occasions,” he added.

Offering the first Halal body care items, Sahfee Care exhibited Shariah-compliant products, including shampoo, conditioners, shower jell and body lotion.

P. Driouech, developer of Sahfee Care, said all the items exhibited were 100 per cent Halal. “Our products, following three years of research, are all free from animal extracts, alcohol and genetically manipulated ingredients,” he stressed, adding that they were looking for distributors in the region.

Joofri’s Group exhibited Halal foodstuff and general items. “All our products, including cleaning items, air fresheners, cosmetics and personal care oils, are totally Halal,” said Muddasir Alam, a salesman, adding that they were exhibiting the first Halal beer. “It is 100 per cent alcohol free. However, it tastes like normal beer,” he noted.

Looking for key players in the Halal Industry, Dr Zeniada, head of Halal Lab in the Philippines, said she was very interested in participating in the exhibition to share ideas and exchange information and experiences.

“Though we are targeting both Muslims and non-Muslims, we cannot compromise on the integrity of Halal products. Halal means the safest, cleanest, healthiest and highest quality products and services,” she said.

Observing that Halal was not only a religious phenomenon, but most importantly scientific. “Scientific applications are necessary for competition in the global market. We need to make our products competitive worldwide,” she added.

Vietnam’s Halal Tourism: A Rising Star in the Global Travel Landscape

Vietnam's Halal Tourism: A Rising Star in the Global Travel Landscape

Vietnam’s tourism sector, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, is now setting its sights on a new horizon: Halal tourism . This burgeoning sector, catering to Muslim travelers, is rapidly gaining traction as a potential goldmine for Vietnam’s tourism industry. Let’s delve into how Vietnam is embracing Halal tourism and why it’s becoming a key player in this global market.

The Growing Promise of Halal Tourism in Vietnam

Halal tourism, as defined by the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), is more than just a niche market. With over 2.1 billion Muslims worldwide, making up about 25% of the global population, the demand for Muslim-friendly travel experiences is surging. The number of Muslim international tourists soared from 108 million in 2013 to an estimated 160 million in 2019, with projections suggesting an 80% increase by 2023. This market’s spending power is formidable, expected to hit a staggering US$341.1 billion annually by 2030.

Vietnam’s Strategy to Attract Muslim Tourists

Vietnam has witnessed a significant uptick in tourists from Muslim-majority countries such as the Middle East, Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Indonesia have also contributed to the rising Muslim tourist arrivals in the country. This influx is no coincidence but the result of Vietnam’s strategic efforts to tap into the Halal market.

Targeted Marketing Efforts

Recognizing the potential, the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) has organized several promotional conferences in key regions like the Middle East and Southeast Asia. These events focus on showcasing Vietnam’s readiness to cater to Muslim travelers. Moreover, VNAT is intensifying its promotion in India, identified as a critical market for future growth.

Tailoring Services for Muslim Travelers

Vietnam’s approach goes beyond mere marketing. Localities like Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Quang Nam, and Kien Giang are actively adapting their offerings to be more Muslim-friendly. This includes the establishment of prayer facilities in public areas, hotels, and entertainment spots, and ensuring the availability of Halal-certified food and beverages.

A Focus on High-End Experiences

While continuing to explore traditional markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, Vietnam is also eyeing the affluent Middle Eastern market. Tourists from this region are known for their willingness to indulge in high-end services, presenting a lucrative opportunity for Vietnam’s luxury tourism segment.

The Path Ahead for Vietnam’s Halal Tourism

Vietnam’s foray into Halal tourism is not just about expanding its market reach; it’s about embracing cultural diversity and inclusivity. By catering to the unique needs of Muslim travelers, Vietnam is setting a benchmark in the global tourism industry.

As Halal tourism continues to grow, Vietnam is poised to become a preferred destination for Muslim travelers, offering a harmonious blend of cultural authenticity, scenic beauty, and Muslim-friendly amenities. With its strategic initiatives and inclusive approach, Vietnam’s tourism sector is well on its way to unlocking the vast potential of the Halal tourism market.
