The River Barge Cruising Experience

Luxury barge cruising is unlike any typical cruise you’ve ever experienced.  Instead of seeking out experiences, you’ll find that many of your favorite moments will simply come to you.  You’ll savor every second as you explore the local food, wine and history of each region all at a leisurely pace.  To better understand the experience, please take a moment to explore a typical day on board our luxury barges below.

  • AWAKE & NOURISH
  • MORNING IMMERSION
  • AFTERNOON EXCURSIONS
  • A PERFECT ENDING

Breakfast

After a peaceful night of sleep in your luxurious accommodations, awake refreshed and ready to start your day. Breakfast is typically light, though bursting with flavor, and will include a variety of fresh fruits, croissants, preserves, yogurts, and beverages. We source ingredients from local villages, so by the time you wake, the crew has already pedaled into town for fresh croissants and baguettes for the day, and fresh orange juice is being pressed for a bright morning refreshment. This is your morning, and additional breakfast items can be prepared by the chef upon your request.

luxury french barge cruises

Each morning, we cruise along the waterways traversing the beautiful countryside.  This is truly one of the most magnificent times of the day. It’s the perfect time to sip a cappuccino and relax as you glide through the beautiful, rich scenery. At each lock, you can take the opportunity to walk or bike alongside the waterway and explore the local villages. Barge cruising is all about taking things at a leisurely pace, so you don’t need to worry about getting left behind if you decide to take a stroll. The next lock is always just a short distance ahead!  If you’re looking for more adventure, the crew can always provide you with suggestions for longer cycling routes.

luxury french barge cruises

Lunch is intentionally light and is a sumptuous mix of fresh local ingredients paired with the brilliant wines of the region you’re traveling through. No meal in France would be complete without a tasting of 2-3 French wines and cheeses, and you’ll get to taste a wide variety during your week with us! Most of your lunches will be served onboard your luxury barge and prepared by your private chef for you to enjoy alongside the beautiful scenery.

luxury french barge cruises

There are so many things to see and do in France and each day we typically spend the afternoon exploring and visiting local points of interest. The itinerary for each barge and region vary, but they’re all thoughtfully planned to immerse you in the most rewarding experiences of the regions. You’ll have the opportunity to visit iconic châteaux, enjoy wine tastings in local vineyards and explore medieval villages.  Some experiences are within walking distance but we also have a vehicle that will transport you to excursions located farther away from the waterways.

luxury french barge cruises

Upon returning from your afternoon excursions, the crew will welcome you back on board to rest and relax as you please. You’re free to return to your room for a nap, read a book, take a stroll, or steal a snack from the kitchen. Our chefs are true masters of crafting the perfect afternoon cocktails to compliment the end of an exciting day. For a taste of true indulgence, pop the top on a delightful sparkling wine from the region and make a toast to the last moments of your afternoon. Why not? This time is yours to spend as you please!

After dinner and dessert, take your conversation into the saloon to enjoy a leisurely nightcap or coffee while you reflect upon your day. Evenings are all about relaxation. Many guests choose to take one last visit topside to breathe in the fresh evening air and gaze at the stars before retiring to their comfy suites for the night.

Thank you for the wonderful week! We will long remember the food, the wine, the cruising, the tours, the walks, the lounging on the deck, the conversation and just plain fun!

Ultimate Guide to Luxury Barge Cruises in France: Routes & Experiences

by Judith Eve | Mar 10, 2024 | Destination Guides & Ports

luxury french barge cruises

Imagine drifting along the tranquil waterways of France, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and historic villages. Luxury barge cruises offer an intimate and lavish way to explore the heart of France, promising an unforgettable journey through its picturesque canals and rivers.

These floating boutique hotels provide a unique perspective on French culture, cuisine, and countryside. With gourmet meals, fine wines, and personalized excursions, guests experience the epitome of relaxation and indulgence. Whether it's the sun-drenched vineyards of Burgundy or the storybook scenery of the Loire Valley, a luxury barge cruise in France is an extraordinary adventure waiting to happen.

Benefits of Luxury Barge Cruises

Luxury barge cruises in France are not just about the journey or the destination—they're about experiencing a unique blend of relaxation, culture, and exclusive services that stand apart from traditional cruising options. The benefits of choosing this mode of travel are abundant, catering not only to the needs of those seeking peaceful retreats but also to the desires of adventure-seekers and culinary enthusiasts.

One of the most compelling perks is the personalized experience . With a limited number of guests aboard, typically ranging from six to twelve, the crew can provide individualized attention, tailoring activities, meals, and excursions to meet the specific interests and preferences of each traveler. This high level of personalization ensures that everyone aboard feels uniquely catered to and valued.

Moreover, the intimacy of a luxury barge cruise fosters a sense of camaraderie among passengers, making it ideal for those who appreciate socializing in smaller, more meaningful groups. Unlike massive ocean liners, the cozy atmosphere of a barge encourages interactions amongst guests, potentially leading to lasting friendships.

The slow pace of travel is another significant benefit, allowing travelers to truly unwind and soak in the breathtaking landscapes at a leisurely rate. This pace is conducive to deep relaxation and offers ample opportunity for guests to engage with their surroundings, whether through admiring the scenery, participating in leisurely walks, bike rides along towpaths, or exploring quaint villages.

Lastly, the cuisine onboard luxury barge cruises deserves a special mention. Passengers are treated to gourmet meals prepared by skilled chefs, often using local ingredients sourced from the regions through which they travel. Each meal becomes an adventure in itself, accompanied by a selection of fine wines and cheeses, providing an immersive experience into French culinary traditions.

Top Destinations in France

luxury french barge cruises

France's waterways meander through its heart, offering unparalleled views of some of the country's most splendid destinations. Luxury barge cruises take advantage of these routes, providing guests with exclusive access to areas often untouched by the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourism.

One must-see destination is Burgundy , renowned for its idyllic landscapes, world-class vineyards, and historic towns. The region's canals, such as the Canal de Bourgogne, offer a serene passage through rolling hills and medieval villages, making it a favorite among wine enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

The Loire Valley , with its iconic châteaux and lush vineyards, is another gem on the luxury barge cruise map. Often referred to as the 'Garden of France', its gentle rivers allow travelers to soak in the opulent Renaissance castles and sweeping gardens at a leisurely pace. This area is not just a feast for the eyes but also a haven for those keen to explore France's aristocratic past.

Provence and the Canal du Midi stand out for their distinctive landscapes and cultural heritage. Cruising through Provence offers a tapestry of lavender fields, ancient towns, and vibrant markets. The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, connects the Mediterranean with the Atlantic and is lined with centuries-old plane trees, making it a picturesque route for those interested in the tranquility of southern France.

Each destination boasts a unique charm, promising an intimate and enriching cruising experience. Whether it's the gourmet food, the storied locales, or the tranquil pace of travel, luxury barge cruises in these French regions cater to a variety of interests and tastes, ensuring that their guests always have something marvelous to look forward to.

Exquisite Dining Experience

luxury french barge cruises

As one journeys through the heart of France aboard a luxury barge, the culinary experiences unfold as a key highlight, promising to engage the senses as profoundly as the surrounding scenery. The chefs aboard these barges are artisans of flavor, often utilizing fresh, local ingredients sourced from the regions the vessels navigate through. This farm-to-table approach not only supports local agriculture but ensures that every meal is a reflection of the area's culinary heritage.

Dining on a luxury barge is an intimate affair, set in beautifully appointed salons or sometimes on the open deck under the starlit sky. The menus are thoughtfully crafted, offering a blend of traditional French cuisine and innovative dishes that showcase the chefs' creativity. Guests can expect to indulge in a selection of fine wines , perfectly paired with each course to enhance the flavors and elevate the dining experience.

For those interested in culinary arts, some barges offer cooking classes with the onboard chef. These sessions provide insight into the techniques and traditions of French cooking, making the dining experience even more engaging. Guests leave not only with memorable flavors but also with knowledge that they can take home.

Exploring the rich tapestry of French cuisine becomes an integral part of the journey, turning each meal into an adventure in itself. Beyond just eating, it's about discovering the soul of each region through its food. Whether it's a delicate pastry, a hearty coq au vin, or a refreshing sorbet made with local fruits, the exquisite dining experience on a luxury barge cruise in France is an unmissable part of the adventure.

Onboard Activities and Excursions

Luxury barge cruises in France offer more than just sensational dining experiences; they immerse passengers in a wealth of onboard activities and excursions that capture the essence of French culture and landscapes. Whether guests want to relax on deck with a book or delve into the rich history and natural beauty of the regions they visit, there's something to cater to every interest.

Onboard activities are thoughtfully designed to enhance the cruising experience. Guests might find themselves participating in wine tasting sessions, where expert sommeliers introduce them to the finest local wines. For those keen on learning, some barges host French language workshops or culinary classes led by the onboard chefs, providing a hands-on approach to the country's culinary traditions.

Excursions are a highlight of these cruises, offering intimate glimpses into local life, history, and nature. Tours are often guided, ensuring guests receive insightful commentary and access to hidden gems they might otherwise miss. Options might include:

  • Visiting local markets with the chef to select fresh ingredients
  • Historical tours of medieval towns and châteaux
  • Biking or hiking along picturesque trails beside the canals
  • Hot air balloon rides providing aerial views of the stunning landscapes

Cultural immersion is at the heart of these journeys, and the excursions are designed to connect passengers with the local people, traditions, and sights. Whether it's exploring a family-run vineyard, attending a classical music concert in a historic setting, or participating in a local festival, guests come away with a deeper understanding of the region.

The emphasis on personalized experiences means that the pace and nature of the activities and excursions can often be tailored to the guests' preferences, ensuring that everyone aboard can find their own perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural exploration.

Choosing the Right Luxury Barge Cruise

When deciding on the perfect luxury barge cruise in France, potential travelers should consider several key factors to ensure their experience is nothing short of magical. The vast array of options caters to diverse interests and preferences, making it essential to weigh these elements carefully.

Firstly, route and region play a pivotal role in the selection process. France's waterways navigate through various landscapes and historical settings. Some cruises focus on the lush, vineyard-strewn valleys of Burgundy, while others explore the sun-drenched Provence or the picturesque Loire Valley. Each region offers unique experiences, from wine tastings in world-renowned vineyards to exploring medieval castles and markets. It's vital to choose a route that aligns with one's cultural and scenic interests.

The size and amenities of the barge are also crucial. Smaller barges offer a more intimate atmosphere, potentially housing as few as four passengers, which allows for a personalized service that larger vessels cannot match. However, larger barges might offer more amenities, such as onboard spas or fitness centers. Understanding the type of experience one desires—whether it's cozy and intimate or slightly more lavish with additional facilities—is a significant deciding factor.

Activity level is another area to consider. Although luxury barge cruises generally emphasize relaxation and cultural immersion, some provide more active options like biking or hiking along canal paths. For those seeking adventure alongside luxury, it's worthwhile to look into the specific activities offered on different barges.

Lastly, the cuisine and dining experiences on board can vary. While all luxury barges pride themselves on offering exceptional meals that highlight French culinary excellence, some might specialize in gourmet experiences with onboard chefs who use locally-sourced ingredients to craft exquisite dishes. For food enthusiasts, selecting a barge that focuses on culinary exploration could enhance the overall journey.

Each of these aspects contributes to the overall experience of a luxury barge cruise in France. By carefully considering what's most important to them, travelers can select a cruise that not only meets but exceeds their expectations, ensuring an unforgettable journey through the heart of France.

Luxury French Barge Cruise

Cruising france's nivernais canal aboard the “luciole”.

Cruising between the city of Auxerre and the medieval town of Clamecy, this week-long itinerary aboard the “Luciole” takes in some of the most majestic scenery along the Nivernais Canal. It combines leisurely cruising with daily excursions to explore the centuries-old churches, chateaux, and wine cellars along the route.

By day, your captain will expertly pilot the barge along the 18th-century waterway before mooring each evening alongside charming towns and villages. Our knowledgeable guides will immerse you in the region’s history and culture, with plenty of time for wine tasting and shopping along the way. In addition to delicious meals served by our culinary team, you will be treated to a shore-based lunch in a classic French restaurant.

Please note that “Luciole’s” direction of travel alternates each week. If you have specific interests (wine tasting, biking, etc.), special itineraries can be arranged.

The Luciole Luxury Barge

The “Luciole" began her working life in 1926 as the “Ponctuel”, a mule-drawn freight vessel that transported coal along the French canals. Eventually, she was equipped with an engine and would carry cargo loads weighing up to 180 tonnes.

An entrepreneur, Richard Parsons, purchased the vessel in 1966 and had her converted into the first hotel-barge in the French port of Dunkirk. Renamed “Palinurus”, she transported holidaymakers along the waterways of France, with guests including the American author Emily Kimbrough. During her 1968 trip, she conceived her novel “Floating Island”, which recounted her days spent cruising the Burgundy Canal.

In 1985, the “Palinurus” was purchased by Inland Voyages Limited and renamed “Luciole” (“Firefly”) before undergoing a complete refit. Aside from doing away with the bunk-bed cabins and shared bathrooms, the vessel was redesigned with spacious ensuite cabins and the saloon roof was raised. However, vestiges of her cargo-carrying days have been retained, such as the curved cargo hatch cover on the front bow deck.

Over the years, the “Luciole” has been continually upgraded, with a new engine and generators installed in 2000. Ten years later, she was “stretched” in a Parisian shipyard, which involved slicing the barge in two and adding an additional 17-foot section. While updates and improvements to the interior of the “Luciole” have been made, it’s a point of pride that the spirit of her early years as a cargo vessel and as a pioneer in the hotel barging industry are retained.

Transport to Auxerre, Board the Luciole

Your journey begins at 2:15 pm at the Hotel Mansart in Paris where you will be welcomed by a representative of the “Luciole”. Aboard a private bus, you will be transported to the riverside city of Auxerre, which is roughly two hours away. Watched over by the Cathedral St. Etienne and the 13th-century Abbey of St Germain, you will get your first glimpse of the “Luciole”. A champagne reception featuring mouth-watering canapes awaits after you have settled into your cabin.

ACCOMMODATION : Luciole

MEALS INCLUDED : Dinner

Cruise Nivernais Canal, Wine Tour, Moor at Vincelles

This morning, we will cruise through the breathtaking countryside that lines the banks of the River Yonne and pass by the historic town of Bailly. In 1972, local winemakers began producing sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne in the region’s limestone caves and reignited interest in its ancient vineyards. Admire the charming villages of St Bris and Irancy before we moor on the banks of Vincelles.

In the afternoon, we will visit a wine cellar in the vineyards of Chablis, which is located to the east of Auxerre. Only wines produced within a strictly defined area can be labeled “Chablis”, with some of the most prestigious grown in the vineyards of Grand Cru Hill.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Cruise to Accolay, Walking Tour

Our morning cruise will take us from Vincelles to the village of Accolay as we head towards the Vermenton Arm of the River Cure. It’s then time to stretch our legs with a walking tour of Auxerre to visit its magnificent cathedral and centuries-old abbey. Marvel at the 15th-century clock tower in the pedestrianized Old Town and photograph the iconic statue of “Cadet Rousselle". Originally a Roman camp, Auxelle became a pilgrimage center in the Middle Ages and was declared a holy city in the 11th century. Today, Auxelle boasts one of the most attractive river fronts in France and is the perfect place for soaking up the atmosphere of French provincial life.

Noyers-sur-Serein, Walking Tours

This morning, we will travel from Accolay to charming Noyers-sur-Serein, which is clustered with half-timbered houses and turreted ramparts. Watched over by a medieval castle, it is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful towns in France and is renowned for its friendly market stalls. In May and June, the town is particularly attractive when the orchids are in bloom.

After lunch, we will continue cruising south to moor beneath the centuries-old walls of Mailly-le-Château. If the mood takes you, you can follow the steep path that leads from the Bourg d’en Bas to Mailly-le-Château’s terrace, which offers superb views across the Yonne Valley.

Vézelay Tour, Cruise from Mailly-le-Château to Chatel Censoir

We’ll begin the day with a visit to the steep-sided hill town of Vézelay, which is dominated by an 11th-century basilica. Once a gathering point for the Crusaders en route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, it was here that Saint Bernard preached in the presence of Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Vézelay is renowned for holding the relics of Saint Mary Magdalene and is clustered with local handicraft stores. After exploring the atmospheric streets, why not take some time out to watch the world go by from one of Vézelay’s charming cafes.

In the afternoon, we will cruise from Mailly-le-Château to Chatel Censoir along a stretch of the canal that’s framed by dramatic cliffs. Ducks and geese have made their home along the banks while rock climbers challenge themselves on the famous Rocher du Parc.

Clamecy, Tour Château of Bazoches

On our final morning of cruising, we will head to the medieval town of Clamecy, which centers around the 12th-century Church of St. Martin. Overlooking the river is the Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem, which is dedicated to the bishops who (unable to preside in Bethlehem) were resident in Clamecy between 1225 and the late 18th century.

Also on the itinerary for today is a tour of the Château of Bazoches, an imposing castle that perches on a hillside surrounded by spectacular countryside. It was home to the famous French military engineer, Marquis de Vauban, in the 17th century and he was steadfastly loyal to his roots in the region. Aside from developing a network of fortifications to protect the kingdom of France, he was also a prolific writer.

Goodbye Breakfast, Retrun to Paris

After breakfast on board the “Luciole”, it’s time to say goodbye to your crew and board the bus for Paris’ Place Vendôme. Our expected arrival time is around 1:00 pm. Taxis will be available here for onward travel to your hotel of choice or Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. If you want to travel elsewhere in France by train or to pick up a hire car, we can make an additional stop in Auxerre on our way to Paris.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast

On some of the ultra deluxe barges, there are wines served for the serious wine enthusiasts - featuring premier and grand cru.

These cruise rates include gourmet meals, wine and cheese of the region with lunch and dinner, open bar with alcoholic beverages and all the sightseeing.  For a different experience, some barges offer a night out at a typical French restaurant for a meal.  No matter what level of barge cruise is selected, you will always find a great crew that will go out of their way to provide top level service and go the extra effort to make sure you cruise is truly memorable.  The crew on board will have knowledge of the areas and love to impart known and little known facts to interested passengers.  The food will always be top quality and prepared with a emphasis on the combining wonderful food with special wines of the regions.

Enjoy Barge Cruising in Burgundy with European Waterways

W e are big cruise fans. We enjoy ocean cruising , river cruising , and earlier this summer we fell in love with barge cruising. We cruised the Burgundy canals, drank fabulous wines, met wonderful people, and enjoyed the history, culture, and cuisine of the area.

Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) is located about three and a half hours southeast of Paris and is probably best known for its pinot noir and chardonnay grapes. This was a wine region we wanted to learn more about and the reason we selected the Classic Northern Burgundy itinerary. We were also familiar with the food from this region of France (delicious cheeses, beef bourguignon, coq au vin) and some of the history. This was a perfect itinerary for first-time barge cruisers who are food, wine, and history lovers!

We’re excited to review our hotel barge, the itinerary, as well as share our tips with you. Discover Classic Northern Burgundy barge cruising on La Belle Epoque with us. And European Waterways.

Is a European Barge Cruise Right for You?

Like all vacations, the decision to take a barge cruise is a big one. You’ll want to research thoroughly to see if the experience and itinerary fit your cruise style. While we believe that there’s a cruise experience for everyone, we’re realistic enough to know that some cruise lines and itineraries match up better than others. A barge cruise was something that had been on my bucket list for quite some time and it was exciting to have a good experience and check this off.

We think the following are important considerations in deciding if a Burgundy barge cruise is right for you.

Barge cruising is small and intimate

I’m not going to lie – at first, we were a little worried about the small size of hotel barges. There were six cabins on our barge, a maximum of 12 people, and for a few moments, the thought of being crammed together with a bunch of people with whom we have nothing in common caused us to pause. Since we’re pretty easy-going travelers, it was just a momentary pause, but it’s something that needs to be addressed for a lot of potential barge cruise travelers.

The indoor public areas include the dining area and a salon with a bar. Outdoors, there are additional tables with chairs and some loungers. There is also a hot tub, although I don’t think anyone used it on our barge cruise. While you can hop off the barge when you transit the locks, when you’re on board and not in your cabin, these public areas are shared by all the passengers.

Rather than getting lost finding our way to the dining room, or worrying about a “saved seat” by the pool, this intimate setting provided sufficient room and amenities for everyone.

The pace is slow, you’re gently gliding through canals in Burgundy without a care in the world, and while the itinerary is important, I think it’s more about the experience.

You’ll get to know the other passengers

There were six other people on our sailing, a total of eight passengers on board, and they were some of the most interesting people we’ve ever met on a cruise.

One couple was from Australia and we enjoyed talking about their life in Melbourne, the husband’s emigration from the U.K. to Australia, Australian politics, and travel. Another couple was Londoners who had been living and working in Hong Kong for around 25 years. We had a fascinating conversation with them about the changes in Hong Kong after the change-over, what is was like working and living there, and their travels around Asia. The other two passengers were the 20-something son and daughter of the Hong Kong couple. We talked to them about attending university in the U.K., their return to England from Hong Kong, and Brexit. And all six of them schooled us in tradition and nuance of cricket.

These were seriously interesting passengers! Since we’re fairly introverted, the first day was fairly subdued, but after that, it was lively conversations at every meal.

Funny coincidence: The Australian couple expressed concern about being on the barge with boorish Americans. It’s sad to have that reputation associated with our travels, but we were glad to show them another side of American travelers.

You’ll make your own entertainment onboard

Barge cruising doesn’t have casinos, theaters, pools (although many have hot tubs), or spas. The experience isn’t about keeping you busy 24/7, it’s about providing you with the time and space to experience what is of interest to you.

The hotel barge travels very slowly through the canals, around 2-3 miles per hours at max, and only travels during the day when the canal lockmasters are available. You can easily hop off at one lock to walk or bike along the towpath adjacent to the canal, catching up to the barge when it was convenient.

At one lock, Tony helped the lockmaster open and close the lock. While they didn’t do any of the technical stuff, the lockmaster wasn’t opposed to a little extra hands-on labor. We loved the flexibility to hop on and off the barge to explore and experience on our own.

When we were on board the barge, we lounge outside and read a book, marveling at the Burgundy countryside and enjoying the experience of going through these very small locks. There were only a few inches between the side of the barge and the locks and I’m still amazed at the precision it takes to navigate these small passageways. Other times we’d sit out on the deck for conversation or pop inside when we needed a break from the sun.

You’ll visit historic and culturally interesting destinations

There are stops and excursions on the barge cruise and, as you would expect from the Burgundy canals, food, wine, and history play an important part in the barge cruise experience.

The itinerary covered small towns and villages that we had never heard of, a visit to a UNESCO World Heritage site, private tours of wineries, and privileged visits with a Baron and Baronness and a tour conducted by a Count. We learned about everyday life in the country, what it takes to run and manage a large estate, and heard family stories from WWII. Sometimes it felt like history coming to life and doing so in an up-close-and-personal kind of way. We would never have chosen to visit some of these cities and towns on our own, making me appreciative of the opportunity to see some of these destinations.

With only eight passengers, the excursions didn’t feel like we were getting herded around. It was just a few friends enjoying a French barge holiday.

Barge cruising is generation-friendly

On our cruise, we had an age span from the early 20s to late 60s and everyone got along fabulously. Barge cruising attracts passengers who are genuinely curious about the world and want a slower-paced experiential vacation. Teens are welcome on European Waterways barge cruises, and if you have curious teens, I think it’s a great vacation experience.

Younger children are permitted onboard only for full barge charters. When we tied up in Auxerre the barge next to us was a full charter for a multi-generational family that included a baby. They looked like they were having the time of their lives and I think it would make a great family vacation . I would love to find a group of friends and charter the entire barge.

Barge cruising is casual

For once in our many European travels, we didn’t overpack! We studied up on the itinerary, talked with other friends who have been on barge cruises in Europe, and ruthlessly pared down what we packed to fit everything into a standard-sized roller bag which we checked . We each had a carry-on with electronics and camera gear and that could be used as a day bag on our excursions.

It was easy to condense everything because barge cruising is very casual, no need for a suit and tie or formal dress. The majority of the time we were in shorts, whether onboard or out exploring. France was experiencing a heatwave with unseasonably hot weather (many days were over 100 degrees), so casual wear was a must. I tucked in a couple of sundresses, which were often more comfortable than shorts, some walking shoes, and also a sweater which I never wore except on the plane.

The casual approach goes for all the itineraries, but I’d recommend checking to see if there are any visits to locations where something more akin to business casual is appropriate.

Barge cruising is life unplugged

While there was wifi onboard, we found it inconsistent due to our remote locations. The signal strength would get us coverage in the salon area of the barge when we were in larger towns, but that was about it. We traveled with a mi-fi device from Skyroam and found that we could get broader coverage – all spots on the barge and some of the mid-sized towns – but for much of the cruise, we were in areas with very spotty coverage. Passengers with local phone and data coverage experienced better connectivity, but they, too, had areas of spotty coverage.

I still managed to add some photos to Instagram and Facebook, but the spotty coverage forced me to break away from the daily grind (dare I say addiction) of screen time. If you really MUST be connected, I’d recommend a back-up option like a mi-fi device, but why not enjoy a week of life unplugged.

Barge cruising really is all-inclusive

If you’ve cruised before, you’re probably familiar with the creeping costs of cruising once you’re on board the ship. A cocktail here, a special meal there, add in a couple of excursions and a photo and those extras become big-ticket expenses.

The barge cruise price included your stateroom, activities, meals, beverages (including alcohol), taxes, and fees. There wasn’t a bill at the end of the week. In fact, they didn’t even ask for our credit card. The barge cruise price might seem higher upfront, but it really is all-inclusive allowing you to pre-pay the cost and then not worry about money once you arrive onboard.

Not included are airfare, gratuities, and a hotel room before or after the cruise (if you want to come in early or stay longer).

Life Onboard La Belle Epoque

Built in 1930, La Belle Epoque’s previous life was carrying logs from Burgundy to Paris and Amsterdam. It was the commerce of the canals. Today it’s owned by European Waterways and operates as a luxury hotel barge in the Burgundy region of France.

La Belle Epoque sailed from Tonnerre, France, on a 7-day itinerary ending in Auxerre. We spent the seven days cruising the Burgundy canals on a slightly modified itinerary due to many of the canals being low on water. The barges have the ability to switch from one canal to another, it’s a veritable labyrinth in the Burgundy region, with only minimal disruption to an itinerary. In fact, had we not been alerted to some changes, we wouldn’t have known it – that’s how seamless European Waterways can zig and zag to deliver a quality barge experience.

The pick-up point for the Classic Burgundy cruise is the Hotel Westminster in Paris. Located on the rue de la Paix, home to some of the most expensive jewelry stores, shops, and hotels in the heart of Paris, it’s also the most expensive property in the French version of Monopoly. You can read my review of the Hotel Westminster here .

We came in a day early so as not to worry if we had a flight delay or cancellation and stayed at the Hotel Westminster. The hotel serves as cruise central (there were a few other cruise groups departing from there as well) and choosing to stay there was convenient and easy. I never recommend cutting it close for your departure, the last thing you want to do is start off stressed over your schedule or worse, miss the sailing.

All eight passengers loaded into a comfortable van for transport to the barge in Tonnerre. Luke, our van driver and La Belle Epoque’s captain, immediately made us feel like we were welcomed family, setting the mood for the entire week. Our drive to Tonnerre was a little over three and a half hours, with a stop for a bathroom and refreshment break.

Arriving at La Belle Epoque, we met the crew, toasted our arrival with a glass of wine (the first of many we’d have throughout the week), and settled in for the week.

The public areas

Outdoors, there are additional tables with chairs, some with a canopy above to provide a little shade, and some loungers. There is also a hot tub, although I don’t think anyone used it on our cruise. Bikes are stowed on deck and when the barge reaches a lock, they can be offloaded so that you can ride the towpath adjacent to the canal.

The indoor public areas include the dining area and a salon with a bar. The bar was fully stocked and always open. Alongside the bar was a refrigerator with wine, soft drinks, and ice, also on a help-yourself availability.

The bridge is always open, so I’m considering it part of the public areas. We spent some time on the bridge, enjoying that view of the boat and the canals.

The boat has 12 cabins, named around a wine theme, all on the lower deck. This includes two junior suites and four staterooms, suitable for double occupancy. Half the cabins can be configured with a double or two single beds, so make sure you request when you book.

We stayed in the Satenay cabin, named for an appellation of Burgundy wine, configured with a double bed. With eight passengers and six crew members, this felt very much like a private sailing.

The cabin was spacious enough that you didn’t feel cooped up, and came with an ensuite bathroom with shower, bathroom amenities, robes and slippers, hairdryer, and re-usable water bottles. The cabin was spacious enough that we didn’t feel on top of one another, but with so many wonderful spots on the barge to hang out, we spent little time in it.

Food and beverage

With only one seating for meals, with times that adjust for the itinerary, there’s not a whole lot of advance choices to make.

Life onboard doesn’t revolve around getting up early, something that Tony was thankful for. I tend to be an early(ier) riser, so I’d grab a cup of coffee or tea in the salon, then head out to the deck to read and enjoy some quiet time watching the day come to life.

Breakfast cereal was offered on a sideboard and the dining table was set with fruit, pastries, yogurt, meat and cheese, juices, and breads. It was a fairly typical European spread with a variety of sweet and savory items. Hot breakfast items were cooked to order and included options like omelets, pancakes, french toast, eggs benedict, and more.

Although breakfast was served individually whenever you arrived at the table, we found that the majority of the time we waited for everyone to gather for the meal. There was something special about starting the day together, talking about where we were going and what we were doing, and getting to know one another better.

Lunch and dinner times varied based on whether we were cruising on the canals or on an excursion. With the heat, we often asked if we could eat later in the evening, a more typical French dinner time than an American one, and we were happily accommodated. A chalkboard posted in the salon listed the multi-course menus for both lunch and dinner. I admit to being a little more excited than I probably should have been when I checked out the menus for the day.

Lunch consisted of a starter, entree, and dessert, and dinner added an additional cheese course. Both lunch and dinner were accompanied by a selection of French wines paired for the course. The hostesses explained the wines at each meal. Entrees included fish, seafood, beef, chicken, and pork, in traditional French country dishes. One evening when I just couldn’t bear the thought of a heavy meal, I requested something lighter – just a plate of vegetables. It was a great lighter option – still leaving me room for wine and dessert – and served quietly without calling attention to my requested change.

European Waterways can accommodate dietary restrictions, although it’s important to let them know at the time of booking. We all have dietary preferences, and sometimes want to eat lighter than at other times, and those are easily handled onboard.

Mealtimes vary based on the cruising and activity schedule. In general, though it’s more of an American standard rather than the typical late-night dinners found in much of France. The food is good, creative, and makes use of local ingredients and dishes. Combined with great wine and conversations, mealtime was something we looked forward to.

A few standout meals include:

  • Our arrival meal. We’d traveled from Seattle to Paris for the cruise, had read and researched everything about the Burgundy region and its food and wine, dismissed any hesitations about the intimate setting, and were finally – FINALLY – onboard. That first meal we were all pretty quiet and reserved, the first and last time that happened.
  • Beef Bourguignon – When we were asked if we wanted a cooking demonstration, I quickly raised my hand. There was one other taker and we gathered in the galley (kitchen) with the chef to learn how he makes this classic French dish. Beef bourguignon is hearty fare, braised beef and vegetables cooked all day in red wine and beef stock, and although not originally a Burgundian recipe has now become synonymous with the region. Having a glass of wine and watching the Chef make the dish, then later enjoying it with fellow passengers, was a real treat. Now that the cooler weather is coming in Seattle, this is a dish that I’ll try to replicate at home.
  • Our departure meal. We’d been together all week – with the passengers and crew – and this was our farewell meal. The farewell dinner was also the Captain’s dinner, which meant that Luke joined us for the meal. He carefully explained the various wines and cheeses for the evening (schooled, I believe, by our two hostesses). It was bittersweet, as we shared memories of the week, talked about future travels, enjoyed our last dinner before heading out to the deck for music, singing, and – of course – more wine.

In France, meals are just as much about the people and conversation as it is about the food. That was definitely true on La Belle Epoque.

Tipping is a sensitive subject, especially when traveling with passengers from different parts of the world. In some cultures, tipping doesn’t exist. In others, it’s added on automatically as a service charge, and there’s the U.S., where tipping exists to help service staff make a living wage.

In a perfect world, tipping wouldn’t be needed. All service staff would be paid a good wage, the cost would be rolled into the price of our services, and no one is left figuring out if tipping is appropriate and, if so, how much and how to deliver it.

In cruising, tips are part of the expectation, and on European Waterways, it’s the only thing that isn’t included in your cruise price. The information and booking sheet sent out indicates the average tip is 5% of the cruise price. Note that is the average tip. We opted for the high side and rounded up a bit. I’d guess some on our cruise were on the low side. Tips are shared equally among the entire crew and since everything else is included, you’re not covering tips on anything else.

Our staff worked hard round the clock, this is a time for generosity. We put the money (you will need cash) in an envelope and handed it to Luke on the last evening of the cruise.

Disembarkation

We disembarked in Auxerre and made the trip back to Paris in reverse. We noticed that the trip was much quieter, with a few people napping and others checking things on their phone. Whether everyone was worn out from the late evening before, or just the usual winding down and getting ready to leave vacation mode, I think we all felt exhausted.

Since flights back to Seattle leave fairly Paris fairly early in the morning, we stayed another night in Paris. This was both a chance to rest up before hopping on a flight to head home and a practical necessity. As luck would have it, we found out via social media that some friends from Tampa were going to be in Paris at that same time. We scheduled dinner with friends and had a great last evening in France – just another example of what a small world this is.

Classic Northern Burgundy Itinerary

We selected this barge cruise itinerary for its focus – the food, wine, and history of the Burgundy region. We wanted to explore more in the area, get into the countryside that we hadn’t visited, and slow things down as we savored all that Burgundy has to offer visitors. If Burgundy doesn’t interest you, you can find a list of other European Waterways destinations and itineraries and pricing here .

One of the questions about cruising that we are asked most frequently is about what there is to do on a cruise. While cruise lines have definite personality types, and there are some obvious answers to this question when looking at the itinerary, we’ve found that many non-cruisers have stereotypes about cruise activity. We try to break down those stereotypes while proving specific information and tips. With our day-by-day cruise information, you’ll get information about what there is to see and do on this specific cruise.

Here’s a day-by-day look at the Classic Northern Burgundy itinerary giving you some ideas of what there is to see and do on this luxury French barge cruise, along with a few tips on how to maximize the experience. Our cruise took us through the Burgundy canals to the River Yonne. Note that the specifics on the towns where we stopped vary from the original itinerary, some detouring was necessary due to the low water in the canals. We saw some different towns, but the main excursions were the same.

Day 1 – Tonnerre

We were rested and ready to go after our transatlantic flight and in the afternoon we transferred to La Belle Epoque where we were met with a champagne and canape welcome. After enjoying some time on deck, we settled into our cabins and then it was time for dinner and our introduction to life on board our hotel barge.

Tip : Try to arrive a day early and overnight in Paris. You’ll avoid jet lag and will be ready to jump right into the barge experience.

Day 2 – Tonnerre to Flogny-la-Chapelle

Cruising is now underway as we discover our first canals. This area is known for its Bourgogne Epineuil wine appellation and the countryside is rife with grapevines. It’s also our first look at the chateaux that dot the countryside.

Once we arrived in Flogny-la-Chapelle, Captain Luke drove us to the town of Chablis for a private tour and wine tasting at Domaine Laroche. Chablis is the northernmost wine region in Burgundy and what we drank there was nothing like what passes for Chablis at home. We tasted Chablis, the Chablis Grand Crus, and the Chablis Premier Cru. Although I enjoy red wine more than white, this was an opportunity to sample the variety of tastes Chablis offers. No surprise that both Tony and I liked the Chablis Premier Cru best.

We had some free time to walk around the town and then took a scenic ride back to the barge. We had a chance to view the Chablis countryside and rows – and rows – of grapes.

Tip : Get off the barge and enjoy the towpath. You can bike or walk, and don’t worry, the barge won’t leave without you!

Day 3 – Flogny-la-Chapelle to Saint-Florentin

We cruised in the morning and by now we were really into the pace of things.

Today’s excursion was a trip to Joigny, a small town on the banks of the Yonne river. Luke gave us a tour through the winding streets of this medieval town, and we learned about the half-timbered houses, architecture, and 1000-year old town gate. The barge re-positioned while we were exploring, then it was back on board for dinner and conversation.

Tip : GO! It might be tempting to beg off the “tour” of the town and that would be a mistake. We were a small group and didn’t have to remain stuck together as we wandered. We would have missed so many details of the architecture and history of the town without a little bit of commentary to point things out to us. The tour doesn’t offer non-stop patter, it’s more of a conversation that leads where questions take it.

Day 4 – Saint-Florentin to Migennes

After breakfast, we headed to Les Riceys, a wine area in Champagne that has three appellations. We had a private tour of Maison Alexandre Bonnet, a family-owned Champagne house that is known for its Pinot Noir vintages. Following the tour, we enjoyed some tasting time and it was fun to talk with the other passengers and discover which were their favorites.

This ticked off another bucket list item for me – drink Champagne in Champagne. And, as a bonus, we learned the proper way to open a bottle of champagne. Turns out, you don’t take off the wire basket, just untwist it and leave it on the bottle, then twist the bottle to remove the cork. The wire basket helps keep the cork from going flying.

Next, we headed off to Chateau de Ricey-Bas, a 12th-century rural estate, for lunch with Baroness Segolene de Taisne. Seriously – we hung out with a real Baron and Baroness!  We started the afternoon off with some estate champagne and canapes, getting to know the Baron and Baroness (the former had a wicked dry sense of humor).

From there we moved to the dining room for a gourmet lunch. Over lunch, the Baron and Baroness explained a little about the history of the estate, how their family survived during WWII, and some personal stories about what’s involved in restoring and maintaining the historic chateau. Like many chateaux in France, it’s now owned by the French government and managed by the family, due to the burdensome death tax issues.

After lunch we had a short tour of the estate, giving us a glimpse at what life in a chateau is like. It’s not as glamorous as it looks on Downtown Abbey.

This was my favorite day in Burgundy, with two great experiences that are only available through the cruise.

Tip : Buy some champagne to take home. Maison Alexandre Bonnet packaged up champagne for easy travel home. Of course, if you’re packing champagne, you’ll need to check your bags.

Day 5 – Joigny to Gurgy

We now moved from cruising the canals to cruising on the River Yonne. We made an afternoon trip to the medieval town of Auxerre, originally the capital of Lower Burgundy. Auxerre is a reasonably large city, about 100,000 residents, and is a commercial and industrial hub.

We did a brief group walk around the town, enjoying the Renaissance architecture, visiting the church of St. Pierre en Valle (dating back to the 17th century), the Church of St. Eusebe (founded in the 7th century), and the Cathedral of St. Etienne (dating back to the 12th century). Auxerre is also a modern city, as we discovered in our free time. We wandered around the city taking note of the fashion in clothing, housewares, and home decor, then found a corner cafe for a cold beer. Returning to the barge, we continued on to Gurgy.

Tip : If you want to purchase a souvenir that isn’t wine or wine-related, Auxerre will offer the most options. You can find some lovely scarves and accessories, reasonably priced jewelry, perfume, or cosmetic items. Auxerre is also a source for something you may have forgotten at home. My back had started to act up (a chronic problem with occasional flare-ups) and I found Biofreeze (my go-to for flare-ups) at a local pharmacy for the same price as back home.

Day 6 – Gurgy Back to Auxerre

This was another of our favorite activity days. After breakfast, we headed for the Chateau de Commarin, a moat-encircled chateau that is currently the home of Count Bertrand de Vogue.

The chateau has been in the Count’s family for 26 generations, they have been continuously occupying the chateau since the 13th century, and he gave us a guided tour of the grounds. The count has been living there since 2001. We later had a private tour of some limited quarters inside the chateau as well as some of the outbuildings.

The highlight of the visit, however, was the private falconry demonstration. Falconry is the sport of using trained birds of prey to hunt small wild animals in their natural state. While it’s not without current controversy, falconry dates back to approximately 700 BC.

For the demonstration, we met up with another European Waterways’ cruise group and sat in a shaded area on the grounds. Two handlers introduced us to various birds, allowing us close-up views of majestic owls, hawks, and falcons. We saw them perch, spread their wings, and fly. The handlers asked for volunteers to hold out their gloved for one of the birds.

Tony volunteered! He said being up close and personal with a falcon made him a little nervous, at first, but watching the bird fly from one handler to his outstretched arm was an amazing opportunity. While the birds may look small in the sky, when they’re perched on your arm you realize how large and strong they really are.

While the day tasting champagne and having lunch with the Baroness was my favorite day of the cruise, the day at Chateau de Commarin and the falconry demonstration was Tony’s favorite.

We returned to the barge for a late lunch (it would have been nice to have had a box lunch arranged so that we could have stayed at the chateau and enjoyed the gardens) and got packed and ready for our final evening and the Captain’s Farewell Dinner.

We moored up next to another European Waterways barge and there was music, sing-a-long, and wine long into the night.

Tip : Volunteer! These are impressive creatures.

Day 7 – Return to Paris

Time to go home. One last breakfast on La Belle Epoque and we headed back to Paris.

Know Before You Go on Your French Barge Cruise

A cruise vacation isn’t for everyone. And even if you love cruising, a barge cruise may not be the best choice for you, even though we loved it. Here is some additional information that you should know to help make you make a decision about a luxury barge cruise with European Waterways and specifically, the Classing Northern Burgundy itinerary.

  • There is no assigned seating for meals and the dining room, nor is there room service on board La Belle Epoque. Guests are accommodated at a single seating. I supposed that if you weren’t feeling well and needed to remain in your cabin that a meal could be taken to you, but this wouldn’t be the norm or expected.
  • La Belle Epoque is not wheelchair accessible. There is a narrow gangplank to get on board and stairs within the barge. Wheelchairs cannot be used onboard. They may be used to assist on excursions, however cobblestone streets and rough ground may make it difficult.
  • Safes are provided in each cabin onboard La Belle Epoque but cabin doors are not locked. At first, this was difficult to wrap our head around. After a couple of days, it seemed normal.
  • You’ll need a passport to travel to France. U.S. passport holders do not need a visa. France is in the Schengen area.
  • The official currency of France is the Euro. Currently, one Euro equals $1.12 U.S. dollars and $1.48 Canadian dollars. This is the best valuation I’ve seen in quite some time. Since we visit Europe at least once a year, we always have Euros at home and never exchange them back (too much of a loss on the transaction). The easiest way to get Euros is using an ATM and withdrawing from your bank account. ATMs are everywhere in Paris and we also saw them in Auxerre and a couple of other smaller cities. Be aware of any charges that your home bank might impose.
  • Credit cards are widely accepted except in very small shops and markets. Always have things charged in Euros (the local currency) to minimize fees and get the best exchange rate.
  • Don’t overpack. This is casual cruising and that really does mean that shorts and t-shirts are fine, especially in the hot summer. Check the weather forecast for your sailing date and plan accordingly. There aren’t laundry facilities onboard the barge and you aren’t in any city long enough to send it out for cleaning.
  • European Waterways has a loyal customer base. On our sailing, one couple had sailed on them twice before (in different locations) and specifically sought it out for this vacation. The family traveling together was looking for a food and wine-focused cruise and their research and the reviews led them to European Waterways.
  • Pricing is based on high and low season sailing dates. You can also charter the entire barge and personalize your experience for your group.
  • European Waterways doesn’t provide a travel department to book your airfare or pre- or post- hotel room. We’re comfortable figuring this out on our own. If you need help with these bookings, contact a reputable travel agent.
  • European Waterways offers itineraries in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Scotland, England, Ireland, and other destinations around France.

We use Pinterest often when dreaming about or planning travel. We create boards for the destinations we are interested in and pin everything we see that might be of interest. Then, when we’re ready to get down to planning, we pull up those boards and start researching. If you’re thinking about whether a barge cruise might be right for you, pin this to your favorite Pinterest boards.

Disclosure : Our cruise was hosted by European Waterways. We appreciate the invitation and opportunity to try out luxury barge cruising.

We are big cruise fans. We enjoy ocean cruising, river cruising, and earlier this summer we fell in love with barge cruising. We’re excited to review our hotel barge, the itinerary, […]

The Renaissance: Tours and Activities On a French Luxury Barge Cruise

Leisurely mornings and afternoons are often enjoyed aboard the Renaissance . Life moves ever so slowly on a luxury french barge cruise, so sitting back and taking it all in is one of the most relaxing parts of the journey.   Whilst many would enjoy doing this all the time, the Loire Valley day tours and activities available as part of the planned program liven it all up, get the blood flowing, and take us on a cultural and learning experience in one of the most picturesque parts of France .

Loire Valley Tours on Our Luxury French Barge Cruise

The Renaissance cruise takes place in the canals of the Upper Loire and Burgundy regions, running down the border of two of the most well-known areas in France.   They are, of course, known widely for two things; t he first is wine.   Both Burgundy and the Loire regions are at the heart of French wine regions. Their unique soil and other climatic conditions gives rise to some incredible, and very different, tasting wines.  The Loire, is without a doubt, one of the more beautiful areas in all of France.   Known for its château, there’s barely a moment that goes by where an incredibly ornate, and very old castle can’t be seen.

Whilst Loire Valley wine tours and châteaux tours form a strong part of the week-long adventures off the barge, there’s also a great array of other Loire day trips and activities to keep everyone interested.

Travel to and from all excursions are via the European Waterways private vehicle.   It mirrors the cleanliness of the barge and provides transit in a spacious and comfortable manner.   The air-conditioned vehicle has large windows allowing all guests to have a view and water is always supplied during and after the trips.

A Private Tour Guide

All of our visits are guided by crew member, Matthew, an easy-going fellow with a penchant for history and telling stories.   He has a manner in which he shares information of interest, without being boring, and without feeling as though we need to find a speedy exit for the closest door.  His love for the role clearly shows, and it’s hard not to hold onto his every word.   He gives everyone enough time to stop and take photos, to admire a painting or to read a signboard.   He moved us along when he had too without being overbearing or pushy.   Overall, his style meant that we enjoyed every single place we visited, and everything we heard.

He was also happy to stop for a few “surprise” visits to some of his latest finds, like a 10th-century church in a town boasting a population of around 300 people, or taking the back road to check out yet another glorious château.

chateau tours

The incredible Château de Fontainebleau was one of a handful of chateau tours we took during our barge cruise. Image © Kerri McConnel

Château de Fontainebleau

Our week starts off with a visit to Fontainebleau, a city about 68 kilometres south of Paris and home to not one but two areas of interest.   The Forêt de Fontainebleau, a huge forest once the playground of royalty, is now a key attraction for rock climbers, hikers and those who love the great outdoors.   Its 280 square kilometres of greenery completely surrounds one of the most prestigious castles, the Château de Fontainebleau.

The Château de Fontainebleau is equally impressive, with rich history and yet it receives only a portion of the annual visitors the more widely known Palace of Versailles receives.   This is to our advantage, with smaller crowds, there’s more time to move about the palace admiring as much as you can.  Dating back to at least 1137, the first recorded reference to the château, it is the only château to have been continuously occupied by members of the royal family for eight centuries.  Through the Renaissance years in the 1500’s through to the 18th century, kings, queens and other members of French royalty lived here, making their own changes to a building that began as a hunting lodge and became an ever-growing palace.

The years were tough on the château at Fontainebleau and   during the French Revolution, the furniture was removed and sold.  Having been bought and sold many times, including by the French military, and occupied by the Germans during World War Two, the mainstream restoration was undertaken by President Charles de Gaulle in the mid to late 1960’s.   The château was included as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981 .  Despite the furniture being removed in the late 1700’s, the furniture seen here today is still hundreds of years old.   Its opulence is a sight to behold, particularly in an age where this type of excess and richness is rarely on display outside of such unique properties.

To see this château in its entirety would take days.   We were fortunate to be able to spend a little time here, looking through some of the more important rooms of the house, and getting a taste of what life would have been within its walls.

A Colonel French military waiting for guests at the French Military School of Horse Riding. Image © Kerri McConnel

French Military School of Horse Riding

Close by the gates of the Fontainebleau, a very special tour had been prepared for us.   A colonel in the French Army waited for us.   A passionate horseman he was to be our guide as we made our way around the French Military School of Horse Riding.

Whilst this tour is available once a month, it is little-known to most visitors to the area.   The crew of the Renaissance work in and around these local areas, building relationships with people and businesses, which in turn provide special access to the guests on board the barge.   It’s not the first time we will see this happen during the week, and we are grateful for the unique opportunities European Waterways provides.

Looking almost like a second-hand store or the back of a farmer’s shed, we visited the museum with all manner of horse memorabilia, much of it from the war years.   Dummies wear the uniforms of old, whilst saddles of various kinds compete for space with horseshoes and even an entire horse skeleton.  As the Colonel takes us through this and other areas like the blacksmith’s foundry, and the medical quarters, his passion is obvious.   He is particularly keen for us to learn how they repatriate and provide jobs for war-wounded soldiers.  When he talks about the high number of women employed “because they have such an understanding of horses” and of the French team, including soldiers,   winning medals in the equestrian events at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, his pride is palpable.  When he takes us to the stables, where his personal horse “Estella” and others live, his love for the horses is immediately tangible.   We can see they love him too.

The tour of the military school is unusual but totally unique. It’s the type of travel experience that we regularly seek out and to have it provided as part of a barge cruise was unexpected.

Château de La Bussiere

The gorgeous Château de La Bussiere in the Loire Valley, France. Image © Kerri McConnel

Château La Bussiere

Not every château can reach the heights of those like Fontainebleau. In fact, many of them scattered throughout France and Europe, lie in private hands.   Those who live within the ancient walls, have usually inherited them, as they pass down through the generations, or buy them in private treaties.  Whichever the case, government funding does not apply, leaving those who own them to do so at entirely their own cost.  Privately owned or otherwise, though often aesthetically different, their similarity lies in their history.

Château de La Bussiere has been continuously inhabited for nine centuries, a stunning fact when you consider the more famous Fontainebleau was only eight.  Originally a fortress, this smaller castle is surrounded by a lake that once upon a time would have fed into the moat, one of the castle’s security strongholds.   In 1814, the Chasseval family owned the castle and have handed it down to their descendants ever since.  Access to ten furnished rooms is provided to the public.   This lesser known location often sees more school children than the likes of us, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting.   In fact, it makes it more so.

The kitchen is my favourite part of the castle, with the old auger stove that once would have provided heating for many of the surrounding rooms.   I could easily imagine the shiny copper pots hanging on the wall being used to prepare the meals and generous lashings of it all being served on the crockery that now adorns the central wooden table.  Most unusually, the castle is home to a strange collection of fishing items and eccentric art pieces, like the fish suspended from the ceiling over a staircase.  The grounds are also home to an extensive vegetable garden known as one of the most beautiful in France.

Visiting the Gien Crockery  F actory

This was such a great visit, despite it being something that we normally wouldn’t consider.   This is the beauty of the barge holiday once again.   The excursions are planned to offer variety, fun and a unique experience, catering to a broad group of people with varied interests.

The Gien crockery factory was founded in 1821.   The location was chosen due to the proximity to three of the key ingredients for making pottery: sand, water and wood.   All of which could be found in the nearby Loire River or forest.   As we also know from our time on the canals, the Loire River and canals were an integral part of the transportation network.

Today, all the history of over 200 years of making vases, dinnerware and incredible collections is continued.   Products and designs are used that reflect the current trends of the day, taking inspiration from those around, whilst keeping the processes of making them true to its origins.

Here we saw how the crockery is made from a piece of clay, through the production lines, quality checking and the most amazing of all, the hand painting.   The Gien crockery is now a mix of both hand painted and stencilled artwork. To the human eye, there is little to tell the two apart, save for a signature under the pieces that are hand painted.

It’s an expensive product to buy, but when you see the process and effort that goes into making these pieces, it’s easy to attribute such value.

The Gien Markets

Every French village has a local market of some kind.   The market business is culturally strong here, with locals making regular pilgrimages either daily, bi-weekly or weekly to buy their fresh produce, cheese, meats and fish.

For the guests onboard the Renaissance, we stop by the Gien local markets, tagging along with the barge’s chef, Hannah.   Hannah takes us on a tour of her favourite vendors, stopping to pick up products to be used back on the barge for our meals.   In between orders, she provides us with samples of local sausage, cheese, seafood and fresh fruit.

It wouldn’t be a food market in France if we didn’t get to taste and the vendors here are more than willing to cut you off a slice of something in order to convince you to buy it.   Oftentimes, they are such lovers of food that they are happy just to see your reaction as you bite on a piece of smelly blue cheese, or swallow down a sea-snail.  The highlight of our personal visit to the market was seeing the food Hannah bought on our plates on the lunch buffet.

Eglise de Montbouy

We moored near this church overnight, so our first stop in the morning before things got underway was a visit here with our Captain, Hadrien.   In a way that only small villages in France can operate, he first got the key off the local village Mayor, allowing us private entry into the church.  The various building styles (Roman, Gothic)   support the fact that is was built, and added to, over many centuries.   Inside, incredible stained glass windows, built during two distinct eras is immediately evident.

Château de Ratilly

Châteaude Ratilly rounded out our visits to castles and it couldn’t have been any further away from the glitz and glamour of the first at Fontainebleau.   As much as I loved visiting all of them, it was the simple Château de Ratilly   that I adored.

Built in the late 1200’s, it was lived in, bought and sold by families of nobility until notably, in 1951, the castle is bought by private owners Jeanne and Norbert Pierlot.   Together they formed a pottery enclave, complete with workshop, where they made practised their own craft and developed it as a cultural hub for others to do the same.

This is a château that most wouldn’t get to see.   It’s in its most raw form; with bedrooms put together in a somewhat mangled configuration, basic bedding, and many of them having to share a bathroom down the hall.

A bedroom, in an almost secret hiding place in the attic, would be the place to be on a dark stormy night as lightning dances about on the castle’s tower visible from the room’s only window.

It’s been retrofitted with electricity, so at least the days of finding your way up flights of spiral staircases with only a candle to light your way now behind them.

We were delighted to meet Nathalie, one of the Pierlot’s daughters, who has carried on the pottery tradition.   In a heartbeat, she pulled out some clay and created first a vase, then a jug in front of our ever watchful gaze.   Another masterpiece to add to a growing storage area of pottery.

The family has a strong community spirit, running exhibitions and music workshops at the château during the year.

Wine Tasting in the Loire Valley

Wine tastings can be fantastic. They can also be a bit ho-hum, especially if you’ve been to a few.   Fortunately, the winery we visited has been carefully selected to ensure both enjoyment of the winery tour and the tasting. As the corks were taken out of no less than 11 bottles of Henri Bourgeois’ finest, employee Jean-Michel told us how the terroir (soil) in the Sancerre area had a significant impact on the flavour and cellaring times of their pinot noir and Sauvignon blanc wines.  In the 1950’s Henri Bourgeois started in this area with only a few vines, growing and producing as “it was cheaper than drinking water”. Today, they are the biggest family winery in the area.  Our visit to the winery ended with a trip into the town of Sancerre.

Cycling in the Loire Valley

Good quality bicycles are provided to allow guests to ride alongside the barge on the towpath, or to go for a jaunt into the smaller villages that we pass during cruising.   The rides are easy and the barge doesn’t go very fast so it’s virtually impossible to get lost or left behind.

Entertainment in the form of a saxophone player and singer provided an evening of difference.   The saxophone player considered himself to be a bit of a dancer, actively encouraging the guests to get up and dance with him.  I obliged, whilst others did their best to look busy with their phones.   It was a little tricky doing ballroom type dancing that I am not at all accustomed to, nor good at, but it was a chance to have a laugh and some fun.

It doesn’t get much more decadent than to have a hot tub at your ready.   During summer it’s a little warm to be jumping into 37 degrees Celsius.   In reality, it’s probably not much better getting into it in the evening when it is only marginally cooler.  However, with a hot tub on board, there was every chance you’d find me in it at some stage. With a (plastic) glass of French sparkling in our hands, we indulged on several evenings. It was a great way to finish off the day.

Cooking Lesson

Activities don’t just occur off the boat, they can happen onboard also.   Midway through the week, Chef Hannah invited the guests into her kitchen, so give us a lesson on how to prepare artichokes.

Most of the guests had either previously eaten them out of a can, or frozen, or not at all.   They are a vegetable that no-one ever seems to know a lot about.   Many find them difficult to cook with.   Hannah’s plan was to take the mystique away from this weird-looking vegetable.  Through a series of steps, she showed us how to trim the hard leaves from the outside, squeeze it so we could differentiate between the hard and soft parts of the centre, take the heart out and get it ready to bake.  The filling was a savoury farci and topped with cheese and then baked slowly in an oven.   It was served with an aioli   and a chilli, tomato sauce.

“It’s Australia vs France”, the barge’s captain, Hadrien calls out to us.   We’d just come off the boat and into the local park alongside our mooring spot for the night    We’d challenged Hadrien and our trusty tour guide Matthew to a game of pétanque.

The crew had mentioned to us that Hadrien took his pétanque very seriously, and judging by his call, it seemed like he meant business.  He explained that pétanque, a game loved by the French, was usually played with a glass of pastis in your hand, and a lot of yelling.   With a drink in our hand and a reputation for being quite loud and quite competitive, it appeared as though the scene was well and truly set.  The race to seven was hard-fought, to-ing and fro-ing, until I’m pleased to say, the Aussies won.  That aside, it’s a great way to relax and a great example of the types of activities that can be done even though you are holidaying on the water.

Like anything on board the Renaissance, the daily activities are purely optional.   Guests can go to all or opt in and out as they please.   If you are looking for a holiday that provides both the opportunity to relax with a great mix of activities then a week aboard this luxury barge is a perfect choice.
