A Backroads Route Through New York's Catskill Mountains

New York State's storied Catskill Mountains are a must-see, so head out on this scenic backroads drive to experience the natural and man-made wonders of this region.

Driving Directions: From Catskill, New York, follow New York State Route 23 West to Prattsville. Backtrack on Route 23 East to State Route 23A East through the Catskill Park. When Route 23A East ends, follow U.S. Route 9W North to Route 23 East. Proceed across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge (toll), then turn right on State Route 9G South to the left-hand entrance for Olana State Historic Site.

"Welcome to the land of Rip Van Winkle," reads a sign that greets motorists headed west on Route 23 toward the looming mountain skyline. It was in these ancient, gray sandstone peaks, of course, that Washington Irving's likable character observed strange beings playing at ninepins, quaffed their liquor, and then slept for a night that lasted 20 years. Storytellers and artists elevated these misty hills sheathed in boreal forests to mythological status long before the region became an accessible and popular vacationland. The legendary scenes captured on canvas and recorded in fables spring to life as you follow the curvy path of this skyward drive.

In East Windham, be sure to pull off Route 23 at Point Lookout. On clear days, this overlook beside the dramatically situated Captain's Inn Point Lookout (formerly Point Lookout Mountain Inn) affords views of five states. As Route 23 continues to climb, you'll enter the Catskill Park, a 700,000-acre area (almost as large as Rhode Island) composed of private and public lands in four counties. Since the park was created in 1885, the state's holdings, protected within the Catskill Forest Preserve, have expanded from 34,000 to nearly 300,000 acres. With ninety-eight peaks surpassing three thousand feet, the Catskills are one of New York's most popular winter destinations; Windham, home to the Windham Mountain ski area , is the first of several cheery ski towns you'll encounter.

As you approach Prattsville, you'll see Pratt Rock , one of the state's quirkiest attractions. It's a stretch to call this New York's Mount Rushmore, but that nickname hints at what to expect. Zadock Pratt, who came to the Catskills as a small boy, labored and scrimped until he could afford to open a tannery on the Schoharie Creek, taking advantage of the abundance of hemlock bark, essential to the leather-making process. Within twenty years, he'd amassed a fortune, built an entire town, opened a bank where he minted his own money, and won a seat in Congress. According to local lore, when a panhandling stonecutter wandered through in 1843, Pratt gave him fifty cents to carve his profile on a mountain ledge. Pleased with the result, he commissioned his entire life story chiseled into the cliff face. Visitors who climb the serpentine inclines at Pratt Rock will see a horse, a hemlock and other symbols, including Pratt's coat of arms and motto: "Do Well and Doubt Not."

What began as a monument to vanity became a memorial to Pratt's only son, George, a Civil War colonel, whose bust was added to the five-hundred-foot rock wall after he died at the Battle of Manassas. Without an heir to his empire, Pratt isn't remembered far beyond the boundaries of the town he transformed, but in Prattsville, where his 1829 home is now the Zadock Pratt Museum , he remains a legend.

You'll pass public fishing areas as you follow Route 23A East along the trout-filled Schoharie Creek toward Hunter and Tannersville, two charming mountain towns that bustle with visitors during the winter ski, spring fly-fishing, summer festival and fall leaf-peeping seasons at Hunter Mountain .

The eye-catching, cedar log complex you'll see on the left before you reach Hunter is St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church . The 1962 basilica and other structures were built without nails, in traditional Ukrainian architectural style. Visitors can sample Ukrainian cuisine at the congregation's summer Sunday buffet brunches. The complex is also home to Grazhda Hall , where concerts and cultural events held each summer are open to the public.

As Route 23A descends into Haines Falls, watch for a left onto North Lake Road/County Road 18, where you'll find the entrance to North-South Lake : a state beach, campground and preserve. Hikers who follow the Escarpment Trail to landmark points like Artist's Rock and the site of the once-grand Catskill Mountain House—which counted three presidents among its elite guests between 1824 and 1941—will enjoy views committed to canvas by Hudson River School painters including Thomas Cole, father of this first American school of landscape painting.

Kaaterskill Falls , New York's highest two-tiered waterfall and another oft-painted scene, can be reached via a trail that diverges from the Escarpment Trail, or you can continue 1.3 miles past North Lake Road on Route 23A to a right-hand-side parking area. Exercise caution when you make your way along the road's slender shoulder to smaller Bastion Falls, located at the trailhead for the rocky and rooty, moderate half-mile climb to Kaaterskill Falls. The 260-foot double cascade is at its most awe-inspiring in the spring, when melting snow and ice increase the rush of water spilling over rocky ledges.

Route 23A takes some exhilarating S-turns as you continue your descent toward Catskill. Before you follow Route 23 East across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, turn left onto Spring Street/Route 385. Tours of Cole's home and studio at the Thomas Cole National Historic Site offer insight into the remarkable career of this largely self-taught Englishman, whose first depictions of the Catskills, painted in 1825, took the New York City art world by storm. More than seventy other artists would follow Cole's lead, creating luminous and highly detailed paintings that engendered reverence for the beauty of uniquely American scenes.

After you cross to the east bank of the Hudson, visit the home of Frederic Edwin Church, Cole's student and one of the school's most accomplished painters. Known for his colossal canvases, Church's largest work was Olana , the estate he created with the help of designer Calvert Vaux. Influenced by the Moorish architecture he'd seen in the Middle East, Church fashioned a home rich in texture and color, and he constructed and expanded it between 1870 and 1890. He also devoted considerable energy to designing the property's roads so that spectacular scenes of the Hudson and Catskills were calculatingly revealed.

As you savor these vistas, blissfully little altered by the passage of time, you'll realize that even if old Rip had slumbered for one hundred years, he still would have descended from the mountains, stroking his beard in bewilderment, yet secure in the knowledge that "there stood the Kaatskill Mountains—there ran the silver Hudson."

Race raging rivers, scale panoramic plateaus, fly through farmland and meander past mountain towns. It only takes two hours to drive from New York City’s traffic-packed streets to the Catskills’ bucolic backroads, and exploring these paths makes for an enchanting urban escape.

Choose between state-designated scenic byways and short backwoods excursions to see the best of the Catskills through your windshield. Whether you’re peeping fall foliage, touring a vibrant village or taking a cinematic camper-van vacation, these Catskills road trips do not disappoint.

Tip for driving in the Catskills: While you won’t contend with much traffic, it’s still important to remain alert. Animal crossings are common – particularly at dawn and dusk - and cops are known to set speed traps at the entrance to small towns. Roads are generally well-maintained and easy to navigate, but winter can create slick driving conditions; the best time to plan a road trip is between spring and autumn .

Catskills getaway

Shawangunk Scenic Byway

Best for fall foliage.

Start and end in New Paltz; Distance – 88 miles; allow half a day

The Shawangunk Scenic Byway links a collection of backroads together like a giant charm bracelet. Historic towns, expansive parks and sweeping vistas shine along the circuitous path as it slinks up the Shawangunk Ridge and descends into verdant valleys. The drive itself is best during autumn’s leaf-peeping season, but travelers can enjoy treasures hidden just beyond the byway year-round.

There are four distinct sections of the byway : The Northern Loop, Route 44/55, the Southern Route and the Wallkill Valley Loop. Each section leads to unique experiences, but the Northern Loop offers the most action-packed drive.

This loop starts in New Paltz, a hippie college haven, then snakes toward the Mohonk Preserve on Route 299, where outdoor adventures abound. Turn right on Route 55 and crawl around a tight hairpin turn before entering Minnewaska State Park’s chestnut oak forests.

Expect to share the road with bikers in summer - cliff-top pull-outs make this an epic pedal-palooza. Upon reaching Route 209, take a right, and you’ll pass a series of local farms, including Kelder’s – a you-pick produce paradise that’s home to the third-largest gnome in the world.

Make your way to Route 213 and drive along the Roundout Creek toward Rosendale, a 19th-century cement industry town, then follow the Wallkill River on Route 7 as it curls back to New Paltz. Without stops, the entire trip takes roughly one hour.

The Catskill’s best swimming holes and lakes for a relaxing dip

Upper Delaware Scenic Byway

Best for cinematic scenery.

Start – Hancock, End – Port Jervis; Distance – 70 miles; allow half a day

If cruising along the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway (Route 97) conjures images of fancy car commercials, you’re right on track: companies from BMW to Porsche often use a section of the road known as the Hawk’s Nest in their ads.

Navigating the cement squiggle between the Poconos and the Catskills might be the stuff of motorcycle fantasies, but you don’t have to be a backroad desperado to enjoy the journey. Charming towns dot the byway as it traces the Delaware River, giving road trippers myriad reasons to hit the breaks and explore.

Narrowsburg, with its chic boutiques and Americana Main Street allure, is a must-see. Grab a bite at the Tusten Cup and step outside to soak up the scenery. Callicoon, located 20 minutes north of Narrowsburg, is equally attractive thanks to its quirky shops, tasty restaurants and seasonal Sunday farmers’ market.

Several points along the byway offer river access, but the most popular is Skinner’s Falls , where white rapids attract daring kayakers and tubers on summer’s hottest days. If you want unobstructed river views for the entire drive, start in Hancock and travel south to Port Jervis along the Delaware’s eastern banks.

A winding country road in the Catskills mountains. The edges of the paved road are covered in snow.

Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway

The quintessential catskills experience.

Start – Shokan; End – Andes; Distance – 52 miles; allow half a day

The Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway (Route 28) is the region’s “best of” list in road form: it breezes along babbling brooks, old-growth forests and mountain passes while gliding through cozy hamlets. Without stopping, the drive takes roughly one hour, but adventurous travelers should allow ample time to enjoy the hikes, farm-to-table dining and scenic photo-ops along the way.

Start in Shokan, a tiny town north of the Ashokan Reservoir’s cobalt shoreline, and drive west. Keep your eyes peeled for quirky folk art tucked into the Brunel Sculpture Garden and the world’s largest kaleidoscope at Emerson Resort and Spa.

Grab a bite at Phoenicia Diner , where hipster flavor meets greasy spoon favorites, before driving past Slide Mountain Wilderness, home to the Catskills’ highest peak. Stretch your legs on the Panther Mountain Trail, located close to the byway or plan a day trip to Belleayre Mountain for a snowy ski outing. As the road climbs north toward Andes, pause at the Palmer Hill Trail parking lot, and you’ll see the Catskill Mountains rolling toward the south like waves in the ocean.

The Ultimate Catskills road trip itinerary

Best for long weekend vacations .

Start and end in Kingston; Distance – 192 miles; allow 2-3 days

Make the most of a Catskills weekend by planning a road trip that rings the entire region. This itinerary connects three scenic byways with trendy towns and Edenic diversions. The drive takes roughly 4.5 hours without stops, but it’s best to break up the trip into two or three days.

Start in Kingston – New York’s first capital city – and follow Route 28 as it heads past the Ashokan Reservoir and along the Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway. Pause in Big Indian, home to farm-to-table favorite Peekamoose and the bohemian Urban Cowboy Lodge .

Next, follow Oliverea Road (Route 47) into the Big Indian Wilderness toward Livingston Manor – an ex-Brooklynite enclave with boutique hotels and breweries aplenty. Continue on Route 52 toward Narrowsburg, the artsy darling of the Delaware River, and follow the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway south toward Port Jervis.

The rest of the road trip is a straight shot along Route 209, which skirts the Bashakill Wildlife Refuge and becomes the Shawangunk Scenic Byway before returning to Kingston.

The 8 best hiking trails in the Catskills for every fitness level

A woman stands next to the Kaaterskill Falls on a fall day

Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway

Best for natural wonders and epic hikes.

Start – Palenville; End – Hunter; Distance – 41 miles; allow half a day

Cloves, a distinctive geographic feature of the Catskills, are clefts cut by waterfalls and rivers as they zigzag through mountains. Thomas Cole, the 19th-century landscape painter and founder of the Hudson River School, immortalized their sublime beauty in his artwork, beckoning future generations to follow in his footsteps.

Today, the Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway follows the most dramatic of these clefts as they wind from creeks to peaks. Whiz past the byway’s earthly delights, and it’s easy to understand why Cole devoted his life’s work to the region.

Route 23A is the byway’s main artery, but it also veers onto State Route 214 and County Routes 16, 18, 23C, and 25. To make the most of the trip, consider the most exciting stops throughout the region and plan accordingly.

For a tour of tiny mountain towns, start in Palenville, considered America’s first art colony, then head toward Tannersville – known as the Painted Village in the Sky for its colorful Main Street facades. Finish the trip in Hunter, a year-round outdoor recreation destination. Hike-happy travelers should consider detours to Kaaterskill Falls , New York’s highest two-tier cascade, and the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower, where it’s possible to see Vermont’s peaks on clear days.

Swinging Bridge Reservoir Road Trip

Best backroad adventure with little traffic.

Start – Mongaup Valley; End – Sparrow Bush; Distance – 20 miles; allow 1-2 hours

Find your inner Robert Frost by taking the road less traveled in Sullivan County. This trip, which links Mongaup Valley to Sparrow Bush, follows a chain of residential backroads that pass the Swinging Bridge Reservoir, the Rio Reservoir and the Mongaup River.

Plan to drive the road in summer, when sun-dappled cement sparkles under leafy trees and you can roll down your windows to luxuriate in the country air.

The journey begins on Starlight Road, near Papa Luke’s pizzeria. Head south toward Swinging Bridge , a lake lined with palatial summer homes and continue onto Plank Road until you spot the quilt of lily pads atop McAuley’s Lake.

Bear right to stay on Plank Road, also labeled Route 44, and drive along an ambling stream for roughly four miles as it dives into the Rio Reservoir. Make a sharp right on Rio Dam Road and pause for a bird’s eye view of the reservoir tumbling into the Mongaup River. Take a left on Knight Road, another left on Upper Mongaup Road, and within minutes, you’ll run into the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.

Cap off the trip by hiking along Mongaup River Trail , a two-mile adventure through hemlock forests. In this neck of the woods, white-tailed deer outnumber people, and if you look up, you might see a bald eagle soaring above the landscape.

How to plan the perfect Catskills weekend getaway

Farmer Stand in Catskills

Windham and the Durham Valley Scenic Byway

Best for visiting local farms.

Start and end in Windham; Distance – 21 miles; alow 1-2 hours

If you ask a Catskills local for directions to the Irish Alps, they won’t send you to the Emerald Isle – they’ll send you to Durham. This pastoral region earned its nickname in the mid-20th century when folks with Erin-go-bragh gall started traveling here en masse for summer vacations.

Today, the Durham Valley Scenic Byway explores the Irish Alps as they descend from Mount Pisgah into valleys with rolling farmland and a fair share of Irish flags.

The byway doesn’t make for a straightforward road trip, so instead, follow a loop that starts and ends in nearby Windham, a winter ski destination. This easy half-hour drive is most splendid between summer and autumn when farmers sell in-season produce from street-side stands.

Begin by heading north on Mitchell Hollow Road (Route 21) to Cunningham Farm. Make a right on Cunningham Road and pause at Hull-O Farms for a meet-and-greet with livestock worthy of an Old McDonald sing-along.

Then, follow Route 20 as it carves its way to Cornwallville, a hamlet of Durham, and detour to the Five State Lookout , located off Route 23. When the sky is clear, it’s possible to see the Hudson River Valley, the Helderberg Mountains, New Hampshire’s White Mountains , Vermont’s Green Mountains , Massachusetts’ Berkshires and the Connecticut Valley. Head back to Windham via Route 23, and you’ll pass the Elm Ridge Wild Forest , a 1,355-acre preserve with over 25 miles of multi-use trails.

I would suggest that you don't follow all their recommendations. We went to the Fish Market in Paia for dinner as suggested by this app. It was not a great place to eat and I would not go there again. The service was rude, the food was cold and the fish tacos were not very good and the tables were dirty. I would not take this apps suggestions again. Read more Written April 11, 2024

  • dianacG4551WQ 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Marriage and Vacation Saver! The best money you'll spend if you're on a budget but want a local guide. The Road to Hana has a reputation of being scary, difficult, and long. With my husband driving, we were able to enjoy the twists, turns, views and the kids were thoroughly entertained by the narrator. Using your GPS, it will let you know when a turn is coming up with a point of interest. It tells you local history, describes towns and neighborhoods, and picks up where you left off if you get out of the car and explore one of the many suggested stopping spots. For a few dollars, this was the best buy we could have purchased for a self guided tour that created no stress, was on our time table, and made our first time visiting Maui and conquering The Road to Hana a do-able feat. It is exciting to note that the narrator is an actual resident of Maui, so local knowledge was shared throughout. There are many stops that you won't know about, even if you had a guide book. You can skip a "point of interest" and the audio will move on based on your GPS location. The narrator/guide will even say, "Ok, you can come back and visit this on your way out". Worth every penny--and the best part is my husband and I didn't fight on navigation issues. Marriage and vacation saver! Hahaha. Read more Written April 3, 2024
  • ChitownSuburbanMom66 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Experience This was a wonderful way to explore the Outer Banks on our own. The audio began exactly where we started our journey and would pick up when we returned to the car. (Note: We began our trip at the Wright Brothers National Park since it was closest to where we were staying.) The audio provided interesting facts about the locations we were visiting and pointed out items to look out for. We used Bluetooth and played the audio through our car. We had audio for about 10 minutes. We stopped to purchase water and lost all audio from that point on. Only screenshots and static descriptions. We stopped at a local visitor center and received fantastic descriptions and great maps. The NO REFUND cancellation policy should have been enough to avoid this junk but they hide it well. If you’re hungry for a gorgeous, driver-friendly supercar that’s quick-as-lightning, the new release update to the incredible R8 delivers, and then some. Consider your wish granted.

With a dauntingly low driving position, way back over the rear axle, the devastatingly handsome GT R draws heavily on the lauded SLS. An agile yet comfortable grand tourer.

Hailed by critics and fans alike as one of the finest 911s of the modern era, the 991 GT3 features the legendary 4.0L flat-six capable of singing far beyond 8,000 rpm for a truly exceptional driving experience.

The successor to the adored 458 sees the eager-revving and naturally aspirated V8 retired in favour of a turbocharged powerplant. This supercar will propel you from 0 - 100 in just three seconds.

The Huracan is a fantastic combination of fast, loud, and sharp. With an ingenious 4WD system, the Performante offers impressive technical specs and performance to boot.

Be warned: while there are many fast cars out there, few have the performance capabilities that require drivers to up their game so profoundly. Are you ready for this beast?

GloRilla Arrested and Charged With DUI Ahead of Hot Girl Summer Tour: Report

By Kory Grow

Police in Gwinnett County, Georgia, arrested GloRilla early Tuesday morning and charged her with driving under the influence, according to multiple reports.

Fox 5 Atlanta reports that an officer from the Suwanne Police Department spotted the rapper, real name is Gloria Woods, making a U-turn against a red light at around four in the morning. Her passenger was her brother. She reportedly told the cop that she was on her way home from an Atlanta venue.

Mountain Clove Scenic Byway

The Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway bisects the northern Catskills region featuring some of the mountains and open spaces of the Catskill high peaks. It highlights scenic vistas and the vast recreational offerings in the communities and region. Winding through the heart of the Catskill Mountains, travelers experience mountain scenery, clear waterways, and rolling farmland complemented by historic hamlets.

The byway's story connects the threads of history in the Catskill Region, bringing together the natural resources of the reservoirs and mountains, the past and present artistic colonies and communities, the historical railroads and the early settlers, and the recreational opportunities for residents and visitors afforded by the widespread publicly protected lands.

The Mountain Cloves Scenic Byway provides a profound travel experience within the northern high peaks of the Catskill Mountains. For centuries, tourists have been inspired by the Mountain Cloves' panoramic views of rugged mountains, valleys and rushing streams. This same Catskill aura influenced the Hudson River School of landscape painters of the mid-19th Century American art movement. The byway offers natural tranquility and diverse recreational and cultural offerings in and around the Town of Hunter and a deeper awareness of the history and diverse attractions of the region.

Tiger Woods had a helpful hand on the Augusta National driving range Sunday morning.

Woods’ 15-year-old son Charlie was at the five-time Masters winner’s side as the elder Woods prepared for his early final round. Charlie stood with Woods’ caddie Lance Bennett, chatted with his father during the warm-up and helped Woods work through some drills.

Charlie has followed his father throughout this year’s Masters, but it was the first time he was seen inside the practice grounds. Woods revealed earlier this week that he hasn’t played Augusta National with Charlie in “a couple of years.”

“I would like to, obviously, play a little bit more up here with him and to share the experiences,” Woods said during his pre-tournament press conference. “Especially now that he's got a little bit longer so he hits it past me. So I think that the days of playing from the members tees are over. He's got to come back there with us.”

It’s hard to forget the moment just after Woods won the Masters in 2019, as he walked off the 18th green and shared an emotional hug with Charlie. Sunday marked another special memory on the Augusta National grounds for Woods and his son to share.
