Best concert that I’ve been in my entire life. The vibe is so amazing. You can really feel the synergy between all the musicians and the lights, the music, everything. Out of this world experience. I highly recommend seeing Tom Misch’s show at least once in your life

It was awesome. The logistics, the sound, the lights, the artists. The place was normal, but appropriate for the show. The location of Terminal 5 was good to me because is a quiet area so after the show you can walk and look for transport.

Tom was amazing. His voice sounded great with the natural acoustics of the theater. The band was great and he even brought out Braxton Cook for a few songs. I was thoroughly impressed with the performance

Presidents Cup: Five International Team pairings we’d love to watch

A combination of both art and science, the pairings process is the most debated aspect of any team event.

There are numbers to crunch, personalities to mesh and matchups to consider. The Presidents Cup highlights that more than most. Unique to the event, the pairings for the two Foursomes and Four-ball sessions are announced one by one, allowing each team to counter with the exact matchup they’d like.

Ahead of Wednesday’s opening pairings press conference, here are five possible pairings for the International Team that PGATOUR.COM hopes to see at this week’s Presidents Cup.

Adam Scott/Jason Day

The Australians are stalwarts of the International Team but have hardly played together. In four Presidents Cups with both on the roster, they’ve paired together once – a Four-ball session in 2015. The Aussie duo halved their match against Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson.

At Quail Hollow in 2022, Scott played all four team sessions, pairing with Hideki Matsuyama in the Foursomes sessions and with Cam Davis in Four-ball. International Team Captain Mike Weir could go back to the Matsuyama-Scott pairing in Foursomes, which went 1-1-0, but those are arguably the Internationals' two hottest players. Trying to spread that good form across two pairings might be more conducive to success. Even if they remain a duo in Foursomes, Davis is not on the team to pair with Scott in Four-ball. That opens the door for Day to slide in and solidify an outstanding Aussie duo.

Perhaps their individual experience will compel Weir to pair them with some of his more inexperienced players. Scott could play the mentor role with Australian Presidents Cup rookie Min Woo Lee, for example. That would be in line with how the Internationals have deployed Scott in the past.

But let’s be honest: regardless of statistics or circumstance, the Day-Scott pairing is one we deserve to see more than once in their careers.

Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith

Weir has a dilemma with his trio of Canadians: spread them out to maximize crowd support of each group, or pair two together and create a singular super-group for Canadians to rally behind.

Both have merit, but seeing the atmosphere that would foster from an all-Canadian pairing was too good to pass up.

Conners and Pendrith’s struggles at Quail Hollow are well known by now. Both went 0-4-0 in their Presidents Cup debuts, disappointing results that held the Internationals back. That included one match together, a 1-down loss to Max Homa and Billy Horschel in Friday Four-ball. The match is remembered for Homa’s heroics down the stretch, birdieing 17 and 18 to secure the match. But it was also the Canadians' closest match of the week, and Pendrith rose to the occasion with a gutsy birdie on the 18th that forced Homa to make his putt.

The two Canadians have a tight bond – each was best man in the other’s wedding – and they play off each other well. At their best, Conners is an elite ball striker and Pendrith is a top-five putter on TOUR. Put those two skills together, combined with their connection and their heritage and you have the makings of a formidable pairing.

Tom Kim/Si Woo Kim

There’s not much the Internationals would want to repeat from 2022 but the Tom Kim-Si Woo Kim pairing might be something.

There was no hotter duo than Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay at Quail Hollow, who beat Scott-Matsuyama, 6 and 5, and Matsuyama-Tom Kim, 3 and 2, in Friday’s first two sessions. The Americans sent them back out as the first pairing of Saturday’s afternoon Four-ball and the Internationals countered with Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim, who rattled off an impressive, emotional 1-up victory to anchor the Internationals’ only winning session.

The duo’s energy was infectious, with Si Woo Kim playing the role of agitator and Tom Kim soaking up his first Presidents Cup. Si Woo Kim does not enter in good form, but pairing him back with Tom Kim might be just the thing Si Woo Kim needs to return to form.

Hideki Matsuyama/Sungae Im

No member of the International team has a better record over the last two Presidents Cups than Sungjae Im. The Korean is 5-3-2 in his two appearances, with a 3-0-1 record in Four-ball and a 2-0–0 record in Singles.

Pair Im with Matsuyama, who is playing as well as anyone across the two teams, and this duo has the potential to be the best of any we see at Royal Montreal.

Im is an ideal Four-ball player again this year. He ranked second on TOUR in total birdies and eighth in birdie average. That could help buoy Matsuyama in his weakest format, allowing Im to go flag hunting with Matsuyama sticks to his consistent game plan.

The Internationals have often tried to pair Matsuyama with a fellow Asian player for at least one session every Presidents Cup. He played with Tom Kim in 2022 and both Byeong Hun An and C.T. Pan in 2019.

They’re also just two of the most fun players to watch swing a golf club. Putting them together is a ball-striker's dream.

Min Woo Lee/Tom Kim

This would be one of the more exciting, high-upside pairings the Internationals could trot out. Kim was the breakout star for the Internationals two years ago, and Lee, is the favorite for a similar breakout this go around.

Kim is looking for a Foursomes partner after he played both with K.H. Lee in 2022. Pairing Kim with Lee offers a similar upside to his pairing with Si Woo Kim, putting two high-energy, talented and youthful players together.

Kim is known best for his wedge game, which could shine in Foursomes with Lee, who ranked in the top 10 in driving distance and Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. Letting Lee cook off the tee and Kim stuff it close seems like a pretty solid combo.

I guess my sound is uplifting, soulful, funky — and happy more than it is sad.” It’s a perfect description of his debut album, due in 2018, which brings together low-slung hip-hop...

For someone with a cohesive and sprawling body of mellow beats behind him, he seems mildly bewildered that this is the case. “I try so many genres that it’s hard sometimes to pinpoint. I guess my sound is uplifting, soulful, funky — and happy more than it is sad.” It’s a perfect description of his debut album, due in 2018, which brings together low-slung hip-hop beats, glittering disco, and noodling jazz instrumentation in a way only Misch can. If Misch seems surprised, it’s because his fanbase has developed naturally. He never set out with any grand plan when he began making beats, and uploading roughly three tracks a week to Soundcloud at 16. “ I prefer a more organic approach to making music, but also to building a fanbase,” he reflects. “I don’t want a big push on my music as I don’t want to be as big as possible.” And yet, he’s rapidly become one of the U.K.’s most exciting emerging new artists, gaining 1.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify and playing a sold-out tour of the U.K., U.S. and Europe in 2016. Collaborating with a clutch of fellow trailblazers like Novelist, Loyle Carner, and Zak Abel, he’s accumulated a total of 75 million streams across all platforms to date — and it all started in his bedroom. Misch’s earliest introduction to music came via his artistic family, including his psychiatrist father, a passionate violinist, who would take him to concerts and the opera as a child. He sang in a choir at school, and picked up the violin himself at the age of four. When one of his older sisters took up guitar and later abandoned it, nine-year-old Misch inherited the instrument, and taught himself to play Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Nirvana songs. Today, he also plays bass, banjo, and a smattering of keys. It was one of his sister’s boyfriends who introduced him to the music of J Dilla at 15, and from then on, Misch was hooked. He took up Music Technology at school the following year, and began learning how to create his own “really chilled out, boom-bap kind of ‘90s hip-hop” on Logic Pro. “When I wasn’t at school, I’d be making beats,” he says. “It was just what I did.” As he began sharing his tunes on Soundcloud, he found the response was overwhelming. “You put songs out and you build a fanbase — it’s kind of addictive.” A collaboration with his sister Laura, on the jazz-inflected “Follow,” was a major turning point for both siblings after it was uploaded to influencer YouTube channel Majestic Casual. The track features Laura on sax and Tom on beats and vocals, intertwined to mesmeric effect. “That was the point where I was like, okay, maybe I could do this as a career,” Misch reflects. “Suddenly it had 100,000 plays.” Shortly afterward, Soulection co-founder Joe Kay commented on one of Misch’s productions on Soundcloud, asking the teenage prodigy to guest on his radio show. Soon afterward, in 2014, Misch contributed to Soulection’s White Label series, weaving together obscure jazz samples, guitar, and vocals to create the perfect summer listen (including the dreamy fan favourite “The Journey”). His Beat Tape series collected the best of his hip-hop instrumentals, the 5 Day Mischon project featured collaborations with grime MC Novelist and singer-songwriter Zak Abel, and his 2016 Reverie EP brought the official release of Misch’s most sophisticated songs to date. As well as soulful singers Carmody and Jordan Rakei, he struck up a collaborative relationship with fellow south Londoner Loyle Carner, whose mellow bars flow over Misch’s productions like a breeze on a hot day. Both artists form part of the much-hyped scene of singer-songwriters emerging from south east London, including King Krule and Cosmo Pyke. Each has a DIY mindset and a brooding, poetic approach to lyricism that weaves them loosely together. “There’s definitely a certain sound,” reflects Misch. “Everyone’s music in south London is really chilled. It reflects the vibe of this part of London — it’s laid back.” Misch has lived in south London all his life, and he loves it so much that his new single, “South of the River,” is dedicated to it. “I much prefer the general vibe of south London,” he says. “I love this area, Peckham, Dulwich, Forest Hill. Singing that line — You should come south of the river — it just felt really good.” With its string arrangements mirroring disco synth stabs and a funky bassline, it’s an irresistible bop that nods clearly to Misch’s danceable new direction. One of the biggest influences on Misch’s sound has long been jazz. With a degree in jazz guitar, Misch is an avid listener of Robert Glasper, Roy Hargrove, Cory Henry, and jazz-influenced songwriters like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu. “It’s kind of a warm feeling, when you hear a certain chord progression,” he explains. In the making of his debut album, he’s also been drawing on inspiration from disco, house, and techno, discovered through the portal of producers like Kaytranada and Motor City Drum Ensemble. The euphoric feel of 1970s and ‘80s disco (think Earth Wind and Fire or Gwen McCrae), and the thump of nightclubs like Fabric or Corsica, inspired him to bring more movement into his songs. “I want people to dance at my live shows, I want to bring more energy,” he says. “When you’re in a club and you can feel the bass...I want people to have that experience.” Misch’s sound is true to its roots — he still makes his tracks in the same bedroom studio in his parents’ house, and his mum produces his artwork. (“Her work is very DIY, just like my music, and feels homespun,” he explains.) But he’s never afraid to explore new territory. “I think it’s really important to make music that hasn’t been made before,” he says. “I’m trying to work out what my sound is, and pursuing that.” Fans might think they know his style, but Misch is a restless experimentalist, keen to spend endless hours honing his craft. One of his favorite new songs is a “Brazilian-sounding” jam that reflects how deeply he feels about his work. As he puts it: “It’s about how you can’t take away my love for music. I’ll always have that.”
