“If you’re looking to expand your business, connect with high-quality travel and tourism partners, and get up to speed on the latest product developments and market trends, ATW is the place to be in 2024. As we celebrate our 10th birthday, this year’s events promise to be especially vibrant and packed with opportunities” says Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director at Africa Travel Week.

Free to enter, WTM Africa will run from 10 – 12 April at the CTICC with exhibitors, hosted buyers, Buyers’ Club members, the media, and travel trade professionals in attendance. Held annually as part of WTM Africa, the three-day event is jam-packed with interactive workshops, expert panel discussions, and networking events.

“If you want a prime spot on the show floor or want to pre-schedule meetings with sought-after buyers and suppliers before your competitors do, register early to avoid disappointment,” adds De Jager. “As our ten-year anniversary, next year’s show promises to be our biggest and best one yet!”

For those in the business of luxury tourism, ILTM Africa is scheduled from 7 – 9 April at Kirstenbosch Gardens. As an exclusive boutique event, it offers direct access to top-tier travel experience providers and vetted international buyers with high buying power.  As an invite-only event it is advised that you register your interest early.

Attendees at WTM Africa 2024 can further explore a series of bolt-on events running concurrently at the CTICC at no extra charge. These include Incentives, Business Travel & Meetings (IBTM Africa) , EQUAL Africa powered by IGLTA, Tourism Investment, Travel Tech, Responsible Tourism and Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE).

“As much as WTM Africa attracts those high-profile tourism brands, it’s also a springboard for smaller SMMEs and industry newcomers,” De Jager adds. “So, if you’re eager to expand your business, discover something new and exciting, or simply get a foot in the industry door, this is your chance,” De Jager concludes.

Africa Travel Week unveils 2021 roadmap to reignite travel and tourism in Africa

  • WTM Africa and suite of sister shows to run as a virtual event from 07-09 April 2021 with a live element from 01-03 September during Tourism Month.
  • The virtual and live events form part of a 365-day plan to offer a significant ROI for exhibitors and international buyers .

Cape Town, 26 January 2021  – Africa Travel Week (ATW) has unveiled an audacious plan for its 2021 suite of shows, which includes several value-add opportunities, in addition to WTM Africa, which will run as a 100% virtual exhibition from 07-09 April 2021.

“The plan for WTM Africa has always been about offering value beyond the show floor. This year, we’re focussing heavily on that, with a robust plan that offers significant ROI across 365 days, instead of three,” says  Megan Oberholzer , Portfolio Director: Travel, Tourism and Creative Industries at Reed Exhibitions Africa.

In addition to the virtual show in April, which consists of 1-to-1 meetings, content sessions and speed networking, ATW has lined up a collection of additional events throughout the year, which include:

  • Educational content webinars from May to August.
  • Africa Travel Week: Connect in the City Live from 1-3 September, including on-site experiences in the official Host City of Cape Town.
  • A series of virtual masterclasses from September to November.

Said Oberholzer: “Our plan takes on a blended approach where travel trade professionals benefit from connecting with their industry peers at face-to-face meetings later on in the year. Safety and wellbeing remain our number one priority and we will adjust this element of our offering accordingly.”

The three-day Africa Travel Week Live which coincides with Tourism Month, will comprise:

  • Familiarisation tours. ATW will host international travel media and buyers in the City of Cape Town to experience tourism products first-hand.
  • A dedicated travel and tourism conference with a top-notch speaker programme of industry thought leaders and experts.
  • Destination training sessions for Hosted Buyers
  • Our ever-popular speed networking sessions where buyers are split according to region and product interests.
  • A networking evening for attendees to meet and reconnect with industry friends and peers face-to-face.
  • The African Travel & Tourism Awards, honouring industry pioneers.

The blended format of WTM Africa throughout 2021 will also apply to its suite of sister shows including International Luxury Market Africa (ILTMA), International Business Tourism Market Africa (IBTMA), The Sports & Tourism Exchange (SETE), Africa Tourism Investment Summit (ATIS), Travel Forward and EQUAL Africa.

Attendees and industry professionals may remain connected and informed throughout 2021 via atwconnect.com, ATW’s dedicated resource hub jam-packed with free digital tools, industry news and updates.

“Our industry is inspired to make travel happen again and we want to be a part of that journey to rebuild the travel and tourism industry in 2021 by being active with initiatives that help our industry connect throughout the year,” said Oberholzer. “We need to keep the momentum up to ensure travel to Africa remains top of mind, which is one of the reasons why I’m delighted that we’re able to create a 365-day initiative.”

The 10th-anniversary program of WTM Africa will highlight discussion-based ‘Brain Box’ sessions designed to foster collaboration and networking. Content sessions will be led and facilitated by global experts, emphasizing tourism news, trends, and business expansion.

“2024 is a milestone growth year for our industry and WTM Africa, as we mark a decade of hosting Africa’s top B2B inbound and outbound tourism trade event. We wanted our content programme to champion this, which is why we’ve worked hard in raising the bar in what we offer and how,” says  Olivia Gradidge , Marketing Manager, Africa Travel Week.

The current edition of the event highlights numerous sought-after industry and business themes, encompassing responsible tourism, MICE and corporate travel, travel technology and artificial intelligence (AI), social media marketing, inclusivity, and sports tourism. Furthermore, alongside presentations and panels led by experts, Gradidge emphasizes the launch of their Brain Box concept, intended to stimulate collaborative discussions driven by attendees.

“The theme for this year’s content programme is ‘Step Inside’, which we invite you to do during each Brain Box session. These interactive sessions, encourage tourism players from all levels to come together and join the conversation in finding solutions to shared challenges.”

Emphasizing sustainability as a central theme at WTM Africa, the organizers have meticulously chosen official show partners who are integrated into the content program. One such partner is Fair Trade Tourism, slated to conduct a hands-on Brain Box workshop. This workshop will delve into strategies for responsible destinations and initiatives to penetrate the global marketplace effectively.

“There’s something for everyone in our three-day content programme, but to take full advantage, you will need to register and step inside to join us. You are guaranteed to walk away feeling more informed, connected, and confident to drive your business forward,” Gradidge concludes.

Africa Travel Week Trends Report Reveals Tourism Drivers For 2023

From adventure tourism in Africa and green-hushing to faith-based tours and why pronouns matter, these trends are what are driving travel decision making and behaviour, as well as how we as experience providers are hitting the sweet spot of consumer demands.

Leisure travel, and particularly safari, is driving the recovery of travel and tourism in Africa. This according to the Africa Travel Week Trends report released this week at World Travel Market Africa, being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre this week.

Date released by research firm ForwardKeys highlighted in the report reveals that all the top destinations on the continent are showing a marked improvement in Q1 2023, from 2022, with the improvement continuing into 2023.

What is noticeable is that four out of the top 10 destinations are in East Africa and Tanzania are on track to exceed pre-pandemic levels in Q1 2023, illustrating the critical role that East Africa will play in the recovery of travel in Africa.

Look at flight searches, the presence of South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya in the top half of the list suggests interest in safari holidays heading into Q2. This is further supported by the increase in the share of searches for South Africa and Kenya.

africa travel week

Further highlights revealed in the trends report include:

  • The rise of Adventure Tourism : Namibia is a top performer in this regard, with Germany, France and Spain being key drivers of inbound tourism. For adventure tourists, it’s not just about taking risks but also about connecting with new cultures and landscapes while being physically active.
  • Netflix to promote tourism and travel : After exposure to South African content on Netflix, viewers were 3.1 times more likely to consider it as their top travel destination. The exposure has sparked niche tourism offerings like “marine safaris,” including Kelp Forest Snorkelling.
  • Travelling light: According to World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Trip.com Group: 69% of travellers are looking for sustainable travel options in 2023. In response to this trend, eco-conscious travellers are now choosing to travel almost luggage-free to reduce CO2 emissions, with many purchasing holiday clothing and essentials from local suppliers and donating these items to charities and communities in need before their return flight.
  • Accessible travel: The untapped market of accessible travel and tourism has the potential to expand significantly given that 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the world’s population, live with disabilities. Safaris and other travel experiences are becoming more accessible to people with disabilities, with a multisensory approach that capitalises on other senses like hearing, smelling, and tasting.
  • Greenwashing vs Green-hushing: The opposite of greenwashing, the term green-hushing refers to the fact that fewer companies are publicising their eco goals and accomplishments. This leads to a lack of accountability, missed opportunities, and lack of knowledge sharing.
  • The luxury traveller is young: The 2023 luxury traveller is significantly younger than in previous years, looking for a more immersive travel experience, connecting with the local community, and want to stay longer in one place.
  • Faith-based tourism : One of the trends identified in the report is the potential for marketing faith-based tours or experiences, which has proven popular among committed pilgrims or the culturally curious. Countries such as Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, and Egypt have popular religious sites, and South Africa’s faith-based tourism market has a 2-4% share in the global market. The Muslim travel market also shows tremendous potential, with the number of international Muslim travellers set to grow from 160 million to 230 million by 2028.
  • The rise of digital nomads : While Namibia has already introduced a Digital Nomad Visa, other countries like Mauritius and South Africa are still in the process of developing similar programmes. Digital nomads seek a sense of community and want to fully immerse themselves in local cultures.
  • LGBTQ+ and inclusivity : The LGBTQ+ market has been instrumental in leading the global tourism recovery after the pandemic. This travel market has significant purchasing power, and Africa is looking to attract this market. However, while progress is being made, there are still misconceptions and challenges that need to be addressed.

The Africa Travel Week Trends Report was released at the official opening of World Travel Market in the City of Cape Town this week and can be downloaded at: https://atwconnect.com/atw-trend-report-2023-3/

The three-day live event – being planned to include in-person and virtual events  – will include all the highlights delegates have come to expect from previous events, including a robust speaker programme and associated events like International Business Market Africa, EQUAL Africa, Travel Forward, Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) and the Africa Tourism Investment Summit (ATIS).

EQUAL Africa will bring together travel suppliers and buyers as well as lifestyle brands targeting the LGBTQ+ community. For the meetings, incentives, conferences and events industry, there’s IBTM Africa and stakeholders working in the sports, events and tourism industries won’t want to miss SETE.

Lastly, Travel Forward is the leading travel technology show where travel executives and innovative solution providers gain access to cutting-edge insights, open debate and unrivalled networking opportunities.

Tourism investments across the continent will also be in the spotlight at the Africa Tourism Investment Summit, which WTM Africa will be co-hosting with the International Tourism and Investment Summit (ITIC).

“Our 2021 event was a resounding success, virtually bringing together investors and development projects to unlock a diversity of investment and business opportunities in tourism and travel destinations around the world that can be aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda – Sustainable Development Goals,” said  Megan Oberholzer , Reed Exhibitions Africa portfolio director travel, tourism & creative industries.

For the 2022 event, Africa Travel Week will renew its partnerships with organisations like the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, the Africa Tourism Association and Africa Travel and Tourism Association to ensure that the themes addressed at the event will reflect those pressing issues for tourism stakeholders seeking to reignite tourism to the continent.

“Our partnership with the City of Cape Town is particularly noteworthy. We are privileged to be able to host a world-class event in a world-class city and can’t wait to welcome back all delegates to experience the best of Cape Town,” said Megan.

Executive Mayor  Dan Plato , said the South African vaccination programme was gaining momentum, bringing the city a step closer to hosting large-scale events.

“We are pleased that Africa Travel Week 2022 will be part of those events. The City of Cape Town has worked with the tourism industry and other government counterparts to put together health and safety protocols to ensure we can safely welcome international visitors to our shores.

“Africa Travel Week is the perfect platform for us to showcase, to the international market, how our tourism sector has adapted to the times and improved on our already world-class offerings,” said Dan.

ATW buyers have indicated their commitment to and excitement about attending a live event in April 2022. “We saw the pent-up demand from buyers with our virtual event in 2021, which saw over 5 000 successful 1-on-1 meetings held, 4 300 minutes of speed networking and 4 000 views of content sessions. Bringing the live and virtual together for 2022, we’re expecting even greater engagement, so watch this space,” concluded Megan.
