Brief history of the Appian Way

The origins of the appian way (via appia antica).

The Appian Way was created in 312 BC at the request the censor (= Roman magistrate) Appius Claudius Caecus, after whom it was named.

Originally linking Rome to Capua (in Campania), the Appian Way was gradually extended and eventually reached Brindisi, in Apulia (in the heel of the Italian boot).

Why build the Appian Way? To link the capital to the south of Italy in order to strengthen its influence in the region and facilitate the transport of soldiers and goods.

Paved with large slabs, the Appian Way was 4.10 metres / 13.1 ft wide, allowing two chariots to pass each other without hindrance. It was bordered by dirt paths reserved for pedestrians.

The catacombs and mausoleums of the Appian Way

In Ancient Rome, burying the dead within the city walls was forbidden. The cemeteries, burial grounds and catacombs were therefore all located “outside the walls”. This explains why the Appian Way is lined with funerary monuments and catacombs, some of which are still open to visitors today.

The Appian Way since antiquity

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Appian Way gradually fell into disuse. In the Middle Ages, it was used only by pilgrims travelling to southern Italy to reach the Holy Land.

In the 18 th century, Pope Pius VI ordered its restoration, particularly because many Christians – including popes – were buried along the Appian Way (in funerary monuments or catacombs).

Today, the Via Appia Antica is part of a protected national park covering 3500 hectares at the gates of Rome. Lined with pine trees, cypresses and historical monuments, the ancient Roman road has all the makings of a picture-postcard landscape.

Visiting the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)

Follow Captain Ulysses on a tour of the main sites and points of interest along the Appian Way!

🚲 Exploring the Appian Way 🚲

The sites and monuments of the Appian Way can be somewhat distant from each other. Many visitors therefore choose to rent bikes (traditional or electric) in order to explore this ancient route.

You’ll find all the Captain’s recommendations (bike rental, guided tour…) a little further down in the article.

Porta San Sebastiano

Located in Rome and incorporated into the Aurelian Wall – a fortified enclosure built to protect the city during antiquity – the Porta San Sebastiano (or Porta Appia) marks the beginning of the Appian Way.

The catacomb of Saint Callixtus

Further along the Via Appia Antica, the catacombs of San Calixtus are some of the largest and most emblematic catacombs in Rome.

Founded in the 2 nd century AD, they spread on no less than 15 hectares / 40 acres, on four levels (of which only a small part is open to visitors). Sixteen popes and many Christian martyrs were buried there.

Visitors cannot explore the site freely and must join a guided tour if they want to visit the catacombs of St Callixtus.

The catacombs of St. Callixtus - Appian Way

The Basilica of San Sebastiano Fuori le Mura and the Catacombs of San Sebastiano

The construction of the catacombs (3 rd century AD) preceded the construction of the church in the 4 th century.

The remains of Saint Sebastian were deposited in the catacombs in 350 where they remained until the 9 th century, when they were transferred to the Vatican for protection as the Saracen army was closing in on the city.

According to legend, the remains of St. Peter and St. Paul were also briefly kept in the catacombs before being respectively transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Paul’s Basilica .

The Basilica of San Sebastiano was completely rebuilt in the 17 th century by the architects Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio.

The Basilica of St Sebastiano Fuori le Mura is one of the seven churches where the traditional Jubilee pilgrimage is held.

The entrance to the catacombs is located in the basilica.

🎟️ Book your tickets in advance 🎟️

If you’re visiting Rome during the high season (summer and school holidays), Captain Ulysses definitely recommends booking your guided tour in advance to avoid wasting time in the queue.

The Circus of Maxentius

Constructed in the 4 th th century by Emperor Maxentius, the Circus of Maxentius was a sprawling horse and chariot racing arena. Despite its size, it could only hold 10,000 spectators, which pales in comparison to the Circus Maximus, which could seat up to 150,000).

Although only remnants remain today, the Circus of Maxentius was once part of a grand complex that included a palace and a memorial for the Emperor’s son, Romulus.

Circus of Mexentius - Appian Way

The Tomb of Cæcilia Metella

Built in the 1 st century AD, the Mausoleum of Cæcilia Metella is probably the best preserved funerary monument on the Appian Way.

It was built to protect the remains of Cæcilia Metella, daughter-in-law of Crassus (member of the Triumvirate alongside Julius Caesar and Pompey).

The mausoleum is cylindrical in shape and impressive in its dimensions: almost 30 metres (100 ft) in diameter and 11 metres (36 ft) high. It was turned into a fortress in the Middle Ages.

Villa Quintili

Situated a little further along the Appian Way, the Villa Quintili is an ancient residence built by the Quintilius brothers in the 2 nd century AD. The latter were condemned to death by the Emperor Commodus who confiscated the villa before being assassinated… in this very villa.

The Appian Way in Rome

Visitors have two options to explore the Appian Way:

  • Opting for a guided tour
  • Visiting the Appian Way on their own (Captain Ulysses recommends renting bicycles)

Guided tours of the Appian Way (on foot or by bike)

If you don’t want to miss any of the points of interest of the Appian Way, Captain Ulysses recommends two guided tours:

  • Ancient Appian Way E-Bike Tour
  • Roman Catacombs Semi-Private Tour

Visiting the Via Appia Antica on your own

Getting to the appian way.

Unless you love to walk, Captain Ulysses recommends taking the bus (lines 118 or 218 near Piazza Venezia). You’ll arrive directly at the catacombs of San Calixtus. The first part of the Appian Way (before the catacombs) is not pedestrianised and is of little tourist interest.

From there, you’ll be easily able to rent bikes.

Unlimited access to public transport is included in the Roma Pass and Omnia Card.

👉 More info: Roma Pass/Omnia Card

Bike rental on the Appian Way

Want to rent bikes to explore the Appian Way? You can get your bikes here: Via Appia Antica bike rental (electric, mountain, or city bikes available).

The staff speaks English as well as several other languages.

How long will it take to explore the Appian Way?

Captain Ulysses recommends that you allow at least ½ day if not a full day to visit the Via Appia Antica.

Tour Description

Take a break from Rome’s historic center by exploring the surrounding countryside . Just south of the Circus Maximus marks the beginning of the Appian Way  or as the Romans call it, the Via Appia Antica . All roads lead to Rome, but this was the one you took when you left it for good – for the Appian Way is lined with the tombs and catacombs of the ancients whose burial inside the city was forbidden.

Your private Appian Way and Roman Aqueduct Tour takes you on a scenic drive along the long surviving section of the Appian Way. Started in 312 BC , this impressive road once spanned the Italian peninsula, connecting Rome with Brindisi in the south. Today, flourishing with greenery, this tree-lined country road is considered one of the most picturesque landscapes in Rome.

Marvel at the Tomb of Cecilia Metella

On our journey along the Appian Way, we’ll pass the towering Tomb of Cecilia Metella . Built for an aristocratic woman from a powerful Roman family, it more closely resembles a castle than a burial structure. The artworks on its outside are breathtakingly immersize.

Pay a special visit to the Aqueduct Park

Spanning 240 hectares of the countryside outside Rome, the Park of the Aqueducts truly is one of Rome’s hidden gems. It’s the home of two aqueducts, one from the 16th century, the other from the 1st. Both survive remarkably intact , paying testimony to the durability of Roman engineering .

Movie makers appreciate the Park of the Aqueducts’ beauty. Federico Fellini included it in the opening fly-over scene of his masterful  La Dolce Vita . More recently, Paolo Sorrentino’s recent Great Beauty  featured a memorable performance-art scene here.

Visit the monumental Baths of Caracalla

The Baths of Caracalla were one of the few positive contributions of an otherwise horrible emperor . Towering above the Circus Maximus , they still provide an awesome sense of their original size.

You can visit the public baths’ many rooms and mosaics inside. And your guide will vividly reconstruct the hustle and bustle of the place to bring the Baths of Caracalla to life.

Your final stop is the Circus Maximus

Not much of the original Circus Maximus has survived the roughly 2,500 years since its inception. But from the structure that does , your expert guide will reconstruct the entire arena .

Leaving you to envisage the ferocious chariot races , bizarre wild-animal spectacles, and roars from the Circus Maximus’ thousands of spectators .

Customize the tour to cover the Christian Catacombs

We’re happy to extend this tour to include a visit to one of the Appian Way’s Christian Catacombs. Or if you want to focus mainly on the catacombs, we offer a Catacombs and Appian Way Private Tour .

Both include a private car with driver so you can relax away from the hustle and bustle of the Eternal City .

Appian Way Tour & Roman Aqueducts

Visiting the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)

Short walk visiting the via appia antica from rome.

Typical stretch of Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) near Rome

The Via Appia Antica is the old Roman Appian Way, one of the oldest and most important roads from Rome. During ancient Roman times, the road was essential in transporting troops down to the port of Brindisi in southeast Italy.

Tourist attractions along the Appian Way include the Catacombs of San Callisto and Catacombs of San Sebastiano as well as various basilicas and tombs.

The stretch close to Rome of the Via Appia Antica is now part of a nature and archaeological park, the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica. It makes a lovely day out, particularly on Sundays when the area is closed to traffic.

It is quite easy to visit the Appian Way at any time either by public bus or the Big Bus hop on, hop off Archeobus service, and of course there are tours as well. We have a dedicated page on how to visit the Appian Way from Rome .

Walking along the Via Appia Antica

Map of northern section of Appian Way nearest Rome

Walking along the Via Appia Antica is a refreshing change from the city, you can also hire bikes from the visitor centre. The road is attractive and atmospheric, with plenty of grassy spots where you can picnic.

You could easily spend a whole day here, but with so much else to see in Rome most visitors spend two hours or less. The Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica is a big place, you can even go on long bike rides of over 30km within the park.

On this page we cover the most popular section of the park for those visiting on foot between the visitor centre and Cecilia Metella.

What to expect - walk along Via Appia Antica between Visitor Centre and Cecilia Metella

We have picked one of the most popular sections of the Appian Way to visit, with something to see every few hundred yards or so. The Visitor Centre is the starting point, you can get maps and leaflets chronicling what there is to see within the park. You can even hire bikes here.

Most traffic turns off the Via Appia Antica including the 118 bus as the Via Appia Antica beyond here has sections where only a 4-wheel drive vehicle can negotiate.

Catacombs of rome along appian way.

Catacomb San Callisto Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) near Rome

In ancient Roman times, no one was allowed to be buried within the walls of the city. While pagan Romans were into cremation, Christians preferred to be buried.

The Catacombs of San Callisto is the most sacred and important of all the Roman catacombs and are next to the Via Appia Antica, not far from the visitor centre.

There are three catacombs you can visit off the Appian Way.

We have a dedicated page devoted to Rome's catacombs

Visitor Information Centre (Sede Del Parco)

Visitor Information Centre Via Appia Antica, Rome

Information can be found at the visitor centre for the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica), but this can be easily missed if you don't know what you're looking for.

A big "I" sign on the front is just about the sole clue that this is a visitor centre and not a small bar.

You can pick up maps and some leaflets of the attractions along the way here and it is also one of the most convenient places to rent a bike (see below).

The 118 and 218 buses stop outside the information centre from Rome at the position of the bus in the image right.

Once the bus passes through the city walls the bus descends under a railway bridge and the tourist centre follows very shortly after.

Our what to expect walking the Via Appia Antica page is written up using the visitor centre as the starting point.

Hiring bike to visit Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)

Cycling The Appian Way, Rome

The Appia Antica Park is a very large area, far too big to cover on foot in one day.

The alternative to walking is to hire a bike. There are several places where you can hire bikes, perhaps the most convenient being the visitor centre.

There are five formal bike routes you can get leaflets from the visitor centre or download from their web site. The lengths range from 5 to 32 km and allow you to cover some other attractions like the water viaducts.

A popular tour is the Catacombs and Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) E-bike Tour

Attractions at the Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)

Big Bus Sightseeing Rome Hop On Hop Off Open Top Sightseeing Bus

Attractions are plenty at the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica. From the visitor centre you can pick up a handout/map listing 54 attractions. Clearly you can only hope to visit a fraction of these in one day, even if you hire a bike from the Visitor Centre.

The hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus and Rome's public buses give you direct access to the section of the Via Appia Antica between the visitor centre and Cecilia Metella. This is the section most visitors will walk along as a result, Only 10 of the listed 54 attractions are along this section, but for most this is more than enough.

Along the way are an assortment of places you can visit, villas, basilicas, tombs and such like. Some have free access, some have small charges of a few Euro. Some are closed on Mondays, some have information boards and leaflets some don't.

The lasting memory for most though will be the Via Appia Antica itself at one of its most unspoilt sections where it is easy to imagine the road as it was 2,000 years ago.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

This section will focus on information that will help you plan your trip down Appian Way.

We will cover details such as the best time to visit, how to get here, and what to expect while walking on this ancient road.

How to Get Here

The first 16 kilometres (9.9 miles) of the Appian Way, teh segment that most tourists explore, runs through the Appia Antica Regional Park.

Appian Way Visitor Center

You can easily get to the Visitor Center by public transport. Use this Google Map link for exact directions from anywhere in Rome.

There are two bus lines (#118 and #218) that service the visitor center at the Appia Antica Regional Park. It's just 13 minutes from the Colosseum on the #118.

If you don’t feel like taking the bus, you can also hop on the metro and get off at the Colli Albani/Parco Appia Antica metro stop, though will be on the far end of the park.

Read our post on using the Roman metro system for more details on both services.

If neither the metro nor the bus sounds good to you, you may want to consider using a hop-on-hop-off tour bus instead.

Big Bus Tours offers stops at Appia Antica Regional Park and even drives down Appian Way.

For more information on this service, check out our post about Roman bus tours .

Best Time to Visit

Since this is a public road, you can visit it at any time. But some days and times are better than others.

There are a few details to keep in mind when choosing the right time to walk down Appian Way.

Visitor Center Appian Way

If you plan on going to the visitor center or walking through Appia Antica Regional Park, keep their open hours in mind.

At the visitors center, you can rent bike rentals and get brochures to help you find your way around Via Appia.

Appia Antica Visitor Centre

  • Daily 9:30 am - 18:00 (6 pm)

Appia Antica Regional Park

  • Weekdays: 9:30 am - 13:00 (1 pm) | 14:00 (2 pm) - 18:30 (6:30 pm)
  • Weekend: 9:30 am - 21:00 (7 pm)

Most people will make their trip either in the late morning or the early afternoon, giving them plenty of time to see everything and enjoy the walk.

A sunrise or sunset experience can be equally as rewarding.

If you plan to see Appian Way at sunrise, keep in mind that the park won’t be open.

When is Appian Way the most crowded

Even at its busiest, Appian Way rarely gets very crowded.

Most people report that this is a great place to get away from the typical tourist crowds, and there’s plenty of space for even larger groups to enjoy the area without getting in anyone’s way.

If you really want the ancient road to yourself, consider arriving either early in the morning at 9:30 am - 11 am or later in the evening at 5 pm - 6:30 pm ( 7 pm on weekends).

Another important detail to note is that Appian Way is closed to private vehicles on Sunday .

This will be your best opportunity to experience it as the ancient Romans did, without the sound of vehicles whooshing by.

Appian Way Sunday

Visitors hoping for a more quiet experience should definitely consider a Sunday outing, but they can also expect more people on the road during this time as well.

What to Expect

Depending on how long you plan to spend walking down Appian Way, you can expect to be there for at least 1-2 hours in the area.

Some people go even further than usual, and longer trips can last 3 hours or more.

If you plan to walk down Via Appia, it will be important to wear comfortable shoes and prepare for the journey.

You can rent a bicycle , e-bike, or an electric car (golf cart) to travel along the ancient road more comfortably.

Additionally, you can also take a tour that will provide detailed information about both Via Appia and the many sites you will see along the way.

Some tours include bike rentals as part of the service.

THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE APPIAN WAY

There are many historical sites to see along the Appian Way.

Some locations are more popular than others, but you’re bound to see at least a few notable landmarks along any stretch of this ancient road.

With that said, let’s talk about some of the more interesting things to see on Via Appia.

Tomb of Priscilla

appian line tours

This ancient Roman tomb dates back to the 1st century when it was erected by a man named Titus Flavius Abascanto for his wife Priscilla.

In the 11th century and beyond, the tomb would go on to be used as a fortress.

You’ll find this site situated between two buildings across the street from the Appia Antica visitor center. Here is a video describing the tomb .

If you're interested in seeing more of this attraction, consider taking a tour of the Tomb of Priscilla .

Church of Domine Quo Vadis

appian line tours

Although this church isn’t exactly ancient, it’ll probably stick out as you begin your walk down Appian Way.

The building itself was constructed in 1637, but there has been a sanctuary on this spot since the 9th century.

It is said that the Apostle Peter used to live in this area, and there is evidence from the Catacombs of St. Sebastian which supports this claim.

It is also believed that this is where Jesus Christ met St. Peter. This church is across the street from the Sepolcro di Priscilla and the Appia Antica visitor center.

Chapel of Reginald Pole

appian line tours

You’ll find this chapel just down the road from the visitor center. It was built in 1539 by Cardinal Reginald Pole.

There are a few different theories for why the cappella was built, but one possibility is that the cardinal thought the Church of Domine Quo Vadis was not where Christ had met St. Peter.

Sadly, the building was abandoned in the 20th century and has been closed off to the public.

Colombario dei Liberti di Augusto

appian line tours

This ancient cemetery was used to house the graves of slaves freed by Emperor Augustus.

It was uncovered and studied in the 1700s, revealing around 3,000 niches built to store human remains.

Oddly enough, despite its original purpose, this location has since become a restaurant.

If you don’t find it too creepy, consider grabbing a bite at the Hostaria Antica Roma!

Catacombs of St. Callixtus

appian line tours

As you travel down Appian Way, chances are that you’ll notice a few signs directing you to notable locations.

Some of the first signs you’ll see will point you in the direction of these catacombs where several martyrs, early popes and early Christians were buried.

Although it’s not free to enter, tickets are pretty affordable and they are open on almost every day except Wednesday.

If you're interested in seeing or learning more about this site, consider taking a tour of the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus .

Catacombs of St. Sebastian

appian line tours

This is the next big cemetery on Via Appia and it is notable for being the only Christian burial site that has always been accessible.

Named after one of the three martyrs who is thought to be inside, the Catacombs of St. Sebastian are a popular destination for both the faithful and tourists.

Sadly, this site is not open on Sundays and you will have to pay for admission.

If you want to learn or see more about this attraction, consider taking a tour of the Catacombs of St. Sebastian .

Mausoleum of Romulus

appian line tours

Found on the land of former Emperor Maxentius, this mausoleum was erected in honor of his son Romulus.

Even though the structure has been deteriorating for many years, the walls surrounding this site are still as imposing as ever.

Circus of Maxentius

appian line tours

Although it might not be as impressive as the nearby mausoleum, both the circus and palace found here are definitely a sight to behold.

This land and the buildings on it once belonged to Emperor Maxentius. Each structure was originally erected at some point between AD 306-312.

Anyone walking down Via Appia should be able to get a good look at this historic landmark.

Mausoleum of Caecilia Detella

appian line tours

You’ll find this popular destination approximately three miles down Appian Way.

Built during the 1st century, this mausoleum was erected in honor of Caecelia Detella, wife of Marcus Licinius Crassus.

Marcus was himself the son of Marcus Crassus, who served under none other than Julius Caesar.

As with most of the impressive ancient structures on this road, it will be difficult to miss this one.

TOURS OF THE APPIAN WAY

There are a variety of different tour companies in Rome that provide tours of the Appian Way.

Some companies offer walking tours, but others will make things easier with bicycles, e-bikes, or Vespas.

Although there aren’t any audio tours of Appian Way, there is a brochure that you can use as a self-guided tour.

This guide provides a plethora of information about various different historic sites in the area, touching on both big landmarks and smaller locations.

The brochure is available at the Appia Antica visitor center, but you can also download information from their website, including this PDF map .

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

There are a lot of significant monuments and historic sites near Appian Way.

Many of them are situated right alongside the ancient road, but a few of them are off the beaten path.

If you don’t mind a little extra walking (or extending a bike ride), consider heading to these notable locations.

Baths of Caracalla

This historic location was once used as a public bath that was capable of serving hundreds of visitors at a time.

Unfortunately, the building eventually fell into disuse and even became a burial site at one point.

With a history that stretches back over a thousand years, this is one landmark you don’t want to miss.

To learn more about this site, visit our post about the Baths of Caracalla .

Circus Maximus

What was once an area used for chariot racing has since become what is essentially a public park.

Romans today will use this area to walk their dog or get some exercise, but all it takes is a little imagination to envision this arena as it once was.

This landmark is free to visit, so you may want to add it to your itinerary as a low-cost attraction.

The Colosseum, the Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

It’s difficult to miss this popular attraction, but you’d be remiss to avoid it.

Located just north of Appian Way, the Colosseum is yet another major arena where ancient Romans would congregate to watch various events.

Although there are free days, this site can get popular enough that you should consider paying for admission.

Alternatively, you’ll also find this landmark on several tourist passes . If you want to know more, make sure to read our post about visiting the Colosseum .

Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

Admission to both of these nearby sites is actually included for free when you purchase tickets for the Colosseum.

While the Roman Forum was once the heart of government in Rome, Palatine Hill remains one of the best views of ancient architecture in the city.

Museum of the Walls

This archaeological museum is housed in the historic building of Porta San Sebastiano.

Although it was once used as a gateway to the city, the structure now contains exhibits about the walls of Rome and how they were built.

Chances are that you’ll see a lot of these ancient walls while walking down Appian Way, so it actually makes a lot of sense to visit this location.

The Museum of the Walls is included on both the Turbo Pass and the Roma Pass. Read our post about Roman tourist passes for additional information.

HISTORY OF ANCIENT APPIAN WAY

This ancient stretch of road was named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the man who led the construction of the first section in 312 BC.

Like most Roman roads, construction was planned to start just outside of the city.

As a result of this decision to begin at the city and build outward, the term “all roads lead to Rome” was eventually coined.

At first, it connected Rome with Capua, near Naples. It was extended over time, to nearly 400 miles to Brindisi in Southern Italy from where ships departed for Egypt and Greece.

The Appian Way came to be known as the Regina Viarum (Queen of Roads).

It was strategically placed for military purposes during the Samnite Wars and was first used to bring military supplies to Rome.

Appian Way successfully aided the Roman Empire during the Samnite Wars, giving it the edge necessary to keep its forces well-supplied and capable of defeating its enemies.

Since then, the road has been used for several purposes that have become historically relevant.

In 71 BC, thousands of ex-slaves led by Spartacus were crucified along the Appian Way.

Centuries later during WWII, Via Appia would again be used as a major strategic point used by the Allies to try and take Rome.

The ancient road would also be used for part of the men’s marathon course in the 1960 Summer Olympics.

These are just a few of the notable events that have taken place alongside Appian Way, but there are many more that you can learn about by taking a guided or self-guided tour.

Check our tour section  above for more information.

While this storied roadway of ancient Rome sits less than 2 miles (3 km) from the Colosseum, it remains off the main tourist path and offers a more serene experience. Its cobblestones have been trodden by legions, merchants, and historical figures for centuries, and as you glide along the iconic route, your guide will share fascinating stories and facts, bringing the road's rich history to life.

Experience Appian Way’s Iconic Sights

A must-see along the Appian Way is the remarkable Domine Quo Vadis Church. This modest yet historically significant church is famed for the legendary encounter between Saint Peter and Jesus. According to Christian tradition, it was here that Peter, fleeing persecution in Rome, met the risen Christ and asked Him, "Domine, quo vadis?" (Lord, where are you going?). Today, you can witness the stone with the alleged imprints of Christ’s feet, a sight that has inspired pilgrims and travelers for centuries.

Further along the Appian Way, you'll discover the grandeur of the Villa and Circus of Emperor Maxentius. This site was once the heart of a magnificent complex, including a luxurious villa and a massive circus, built by the emperor in the early 4th century. Although the circus was never used to its full potential, its sheer size and layout are still evident today.

Nearby, the perplexing Tomb of Metella stands tall, a mausoleum for Cecilia Metella, whose family was intertwined with the highest echelons of Roman society. Your guide will also lead the way to Quintili's Villa, a sprawling estate that belonged to the Quintili brothers and is known for its luxurious baths and extensive grounds. Here, it's easy to picture the opulence that once defined the lifestyle of Rome's upper crust and the dramatic history that led to its eventual downfall under Emperor Commodus.

Explore the San Callisto Catacombs

Perhaps the most well-known landmark along the Appian Way is the eerie catacombs. These underground burial sites, dating back to the 2nd century, provide a fascinating glimpse into the burial customs of the early Christian and Jewish communities. As you descend the 50 irregular steps, a sense of mystery envelops you, leading into dimly lit passageways lined with tombs. Yet, as your guide enlightens you with insights into the lives and beliefs of those laid to rest here, the mystery will clear, and you'll be left with a well-rounded introduction to this historical gem of Rome.

After your catacombs tour, you’ll tick off any remaining Appian Way stops before being dropped off at the initial meeting point in via Appia Antica. Before departing, remember to ask your guide for local recommendations. Whether you're looking to uncover more of Rome's hidden gems, seeking the best nearby restaurants for a delicious lunch or dinner, or simply curious about other must-visit spots in the city, their insider tips will undoubtedly make the rest of your stay in Rome even better.

Is there a dress code for this Catacombs and Appian Way Golf Cart tour?

How comprehensive is the golf cart tour portion of this tour?

In the spirit of seeing as much of Rome’s Appian Way as possible, we will not be stopping at every site. You'll still get to admire the Domine Quo Vadis church, enter the catacombs, admire the Villa and Circus of the Emperor, the Tomb of Metella, and more, from the outside.

No, food is not included in the price of this tour, and we recommend enjoying breakfast or lunch before joining. Your guide will be happy to recommend one of their favorite restaurants for after the tour.

A small bottle of water per person is included in the price of this tour, but all other drinks will need to be purchased. Our guides are also happy to recommend a good spot to grab a drink after the tour.

VATICAN GARDENS “NEW” MONOLINGUAL TOUR ENGLISH

The tour initiates at the Esquilino Square, continuing towards the Vatican City. An official Vatican Guide will take through the famous Vatican Gardens. The tour is unique, besides the natural beauty of the gardens, the Vatican City is rich in monument and precious works of art. The Vatican Gardens cover about 50 acres (23 hectares) of the Vatican City. These lush gardens are closed the general public and can only be visited by reserving a tour. A visit to the Vatican Gardens is highly recommend for those who want to see the lovely corners of the Vatican away from the usual crowds or for anyone who is particularly interested in horticulture as the gardens contain vegetation from many countries worldwide includinf Brasil, China, Japan and Australia. These exotic plants live in harmony with typical Italian plants and trees such as boxwood hedges, pines, cypresses, chestnuts and palms. This wide variety of plants makes for an eclectic collection of cultures and botanical specimen. The highly-manicured gardens are embellished with many important sculptures, fountains and grottoes. Beautiful and unique views of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican City re offered from the Vatican Gardens. Booking is compulsory 74 hours before, the ticket includes admission to the Museums (without guided tour).

Some opinions from our clients 7 June, 2011

“I did the Illuminated Rome tour with Appian Line. It was very good and we had a great time at the end of the tour at Opera Restaurant where we dined and were entertained by a lovely local opera band. Though some people on the tour had not read the description / information about this tour and so they had thought that the bus would stop at each sight. which was not the case – but that was clear on their brochure – if you had read it. Also their Mini Art Tour was a great one; a group of 14 people on a 4 days escorted tour to Siena, Assisi, Florence, Venice and back to Rome. We enjoyed the tour. Our tour leader – Lucy, was very good. I definitely recommend Appian Line tours.”

24 October 2010

“I had the experience to take your “Rome in One Day Tour” with my wife.  It was a very nice experience discovering Rome.  We saw both the Vatican and the Colosseum among other sites.  I must say that one tour guide to the Colosseum “or Colosseo” stood out and was intellectually gifted her name was Martha, or “Marta” as she announced it.   She was very considerate, knowledgeable and passionate about her work and it showed throughout tour.

She was very well informed and gave a lot of useful information relevant to sites that we visited.  She gave examples related to the sites and made us not only experience history but live it.  It is people like her that made our visit to Rome exceptional.  Myself and my wife enjoyed her company and wish her the best in her future endeavor.”

2024 Appian Innovation Award Winners Demonstrate Significant Business Results with Next-Gen AI Process Automation

WASHINGTON , April 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Appian (Nasdaq: APPN) today announced the winners of the 2024 Appian Innovation Awards at its annual global conference, Appian World . Each year, the Innovation Awards recognize customers for creating impactful solutions on the Appian Platform . This year's finalists have successfully implemented AI process automation to deliver significant business value.

The judging panel included Pavel Zamudio , Chief Customer Officer at Appian; Neil Ward-Dutton , VP of AI, Automation and Analytics at IDC Europe; and Juan Carlos Crespo Zaragoza , Deputy General Manager and Executive VP at Inetum, a global IT services company. By leveraging d ata f abric  and AI technology, these winners have shown the art of the possible with next-generation process orchestration.

Winners in North America

The Carlyle Group :  Carlyle utilized the Appian Platform to streamline enterprise accounting, achieving a notable decrease in manual processes through automation and integration with legacy systems across areas, including accounting, compliance, tax, legal, and other corporate functions. This effort significantly enhanced operational efficiency and enterprise-wide process transparency. Additionally, Carlyle experienced a marked reduction in the time needed for call and distribution processing, along with quicker financial reporting and real-time accounting.

Oscar Health :  Oscar Health, a leading healthcare technology company, Oscar Health, reorients healthcare around consumers through its full technology stack. In 2023, the company successfully migrated multiple processes to Appian to further improve member and provider experiences, and drive affordability. Oscar integrated Appian's Data Fabric capability into multiple internal systems and applications. The integration improved claim processing and provider contracting workflows. The result: Oscar's claim processing team now handles ~6,500 new claim holds and inquiries per day in Appian, and after just 6 months, have processed over 750,000 requests – decreasing handle time by as much as 30%. The provider contracting team also leverages Appian AI  for intelligent document processing to reduce human errors and enhance process efficiency within the provider contracting process. The AI capability integration directly improved the contracting experience of bringing more healthcare providers in-network within member plans.

Winners in the US Public Sector

The US Army : The agency needed to modernize its outdated legacy contract writing system . Building from the successful implementation at US Air Force, the Army deployed its new application to 400 users across a dozen states and locations outside of the continental US in just 23 weeks. The Army has subsequently issued 123 contract awards through the system with total obligations of $41 million and has plans to expand application use to 2,800 users. Ultimately, the long-term vision is to enroll around 10,000 Army contracting professionals to use the system across 300 sites.

Winners in Europe and the Middle East

NatWest Group : The UK's largest business bank faced challenges in navigating multiple layers of internal governance processes and approvals. Previously, a policy change could take up to three to four weeks to complete. Time from idea to value could take three to four months to go through all the change and risk assessment requirements. The NatWest team successfully condensed change and risk governance cycle time by automating 46% of data in their governance processes, halving over 800 triage questions, and streamlining multiple assessments. As an example, product governance time dropped from 4.5 days to less than 20 minutes, marking a key milestone in their ultimate goal of reducing cycle time from 73 days to 73 minutes.

Comune di Milano : The Municipality of Milan uses Appian to automate and digitize key processes to transform the citizen experience and innovate service delivery for more  1.3 million inhabitants in its jurisdiction. Developed in less than two months, the parking and disability pass request and delivery process compressed from three weeks to 13 hours, delivering an improved experience and speedy service to its citizens. Starting with just one digital application, Milan now enables its citizens to initiate 23 types of requests online for residential services, welfare and health support, building and land permits, procurement, ticket management, and more. In addition to improving the citizen experience , the Appian Platform integrates with 90 existing systems to automate and simplify back-office operations for municipality workers.

Leroy Merlin : The third-largest global home improvement retailer has a vast presence spanning 13 countries and a workforce of approximately 100,000 employees. Leroy Merlin has been expanding its operations digitally while facing new challenges due to increasing e-commerce and in-store orders. Burdened by a lengthy manual refund and returns process due to data silos and slow approvals, Leroy Merlin sought a more efficient solution. By choosing Appian and utilizing its automation capabilities, the refund and returns process, which once took 10–12 days, now takes about 1.5 to 2 days, significantly reducing backlog and enhancing customer satisfaction. Notably, the implementation resulted in a 90% automation of manual tasks, a 20% increase in Net Promoter Score, a 55% improvement in refund processing efficiency, and a 15% enhancement in order preparation efficiency and quality, showcasing Leroy Merlin's commitment to innovation and customer-centricity.

Winners in Asia-Pacific

RMBL :  A leading first mortgage investment company in Australia with more than $2 billion of funds under management selected Appian for its transformation journey. RMBL successfully developed online portfolio management portals for investors and borrowers on the Appian Platform. Besides process automation and data fabric, RMBL also deployed Appian AI Skills to sort and classify legacy portfolio documents, gaining efficiency for AI-driven document management . The initial rollout saw a 42% adoption rate and only 6% of users sought assistance in the inaugural week. RMBL also noted a 23% reduction in client inquiries related to investment and tax reports, which saves the company about 35 hours per week for the front-line team, allowing them to  elevate their service offerings and spend more time proactively engaging with their clients.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in New South Wales (NSW), Australia : The ODPP prosecutes serious offenses under NSW laws with 950 staff members. They were looking to replace an outdated, on-premise bespoke matter management system with a new web-based solution to handle approximately 16,000 matters every year. Built on the Appian Platform, the new solution provided improved access and performance from remote court locations, a simplified UI, and enhanced process automation to reduce manual paper-based processes. The Appian Platform is at the center of the ODPP Digital Ways of Working Strategy, focused on improving automation and information access. It supports an agile development approach for rapid system changes along with the development of new digital tools, and improved data analytics capabilities. Changes that used to take 4 to 6 months to implement can now be delivered within weeks enabling the ODPP to quickly respond to changes in legislation and court processes.
