Extra information.

magnetic fields european tour

The Magnetic Fields return to Europe in November, 2023, with a continuation of a "retrospective" tour of songs spanning their three-decade career. Performing in several new markets and returning to some of their favorites, the band will bring intimate, orchestral arrangements, including material from their iconic triple-album 69 Love Songs . Lead singer/songwriter Stephin Merritt will be joined by Magnetic Fields’ members Sam Davol, Shirley Simms, Chris Ewen, and Anthony Kazynski.

This tour also celebrates the Covid-era release of the band’s 12th album, Quickies, in May 2020 on Nonesuch records. Quickies is a beautifully crafted album of 28 sly, funny, miniature songs, each of which is between 0:17 and 2:35 in length. Merritt states that the idea for Quickies developed while he was in the studio recording his multi-disc autobiographical record, 50 Song Memoir: “I didn’t have anything to do at night, so I doodled essentially and wrote a lot of short things that seemed complete on their own.” The result is a perfect sampler, as Michael Hill writes: “bursts of melody and lyrics sketching in dreams and desires, erotic reveries, and wishful thinking”.

To date, Stephin Merritt has written and recorded twelve Magnetic Fields albums, including 1999’s beloved 69 Love Songs and 2017’s critically acclaimed Nonesuch box set, 50 Song Memoir , which chronicled the first fifty years of the songwriter’s life with one song per year. New York magazine called the box set “a celebration of Merritt’s sky-high range as a writer and a player … a delightful flip through the untold back pages of one of rock’s most singular voices.”

Merritt’s song "The Book of Love" was covered by Peter Gabriel in 2010, was placed into numerous films and TV shows, singing and dancing competition shows, and has also become a wedding favourite. Merritt has composed original music and lyrics for several music theater pieces, including an off-Broadway stage musical of Neil Gaiman's novel Coraline , for which he received an Obie Award. Stephin Merritt also releases albums under the band names the 6ths, the Gothic Archies, and Future Bible Heroes.

CONCHÚR WHITE

Allusive but intimate, surreal but accessible, White’s silky and singular songs always approach their subjects sideways on: sometimes dreamy and theatrical, sometimes grounded and sumptuously melodic, his work beguiles by stealth and contains multitudes. A sense of freedom colours Conchúr’s music. On the Bikini Crops and Dreamers EPs, he filtered the influences of acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Father John Misty into songs at once playfully referential and dipped in authentic experience.

The Magnetic Fields Return To Europe For Tour Dates

The Magnetic Fields

The Magnetic Fields return to Europe in August and September for tour dates in UK, Ireland, Portugal, Netherlands, France, and Germany, beginning in London on 31 August at the Eventim Apollo.

The dates follow The Magnetic Fields’ previous tours of North America and Europe earlier this year. You can see all of the currently announced shows below.

The band’s latest album, Quickies – released in 2020 to critical acclaim – is 28 short songs by Stephin Merritt, ranging in length from 13 seconds to two minutes and 35 seconds, performed by Merritt and band members Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms, and John Woo, along with longtime friends and collaborators Chris Ewen, Daniel Handler, and Pinky Weitzman.

To date, Stephin Merritt has written and recorded twelve Magnetic Fields albums, including the beloved 69 Love Songs and the 2017 critically acclaimed Nonesuch box set, 50 Song Memoir , which chronicled the first fifty years of the songwriter’s life with one song per year. New York magazine called the box set “a celebration of Merritt’s sky-high range as a writer and a player, through the exploration of the circumstances that helped cultivate it … a delightful flip through the untold back pages of one of rock’s most singular voices, and, all in all, the best damned Magnetic Fields album in the last ten years.”

Merritt has also composed original music and lyrics for several music theatre pieces, including an off-Broadway stage musical of Neil Gaiman’s novel Coraline , for which he received an Obie Award. In 2014, Merritt composed songs and background music for the first musical episode of public radio’s This American Life . Stephin Merritt also releases albums under the band names the 6ths, the Gothic Archies, and Future Bible Heroes.

We had no idea what to expect going into this show. Neither of us were familiar with the Magnetic Fields before hearing them mentioned on NPR a few weeks ago. What we ended up with was fun, interesting, and well worth a night out. The memoir approach to the performance was fascinating. The music was diverse and engaging. The discussion between songs was thought provoking. We are glad we had the chance to see the show, even if we could only attend one night.

Merritt was great! I loved the stage set up and the visual screen to complement the songs. The other performers were fun to watch all the strange and unique instruments.

fightoned’s profile image

What makes The Magnetic Fields so interesting is their ability to allow their listeners to form such a deep attachment to their emotive songs, while they perform them in such a nonchalant fashion.

During a concert by The Magnetic Fields, it is not unusual to see the performers sitting on chairs, strumming on their acoustic instruments like they are playing at a campfire, although the songs they are playing are far from being campfire songs. Main songwriter and singer, Stephin Merritt usually tackles dark subject matters in his lyrics such as depression and how to deal with love, but he often expresses these themes in bitter, quirky ways. It is hard to know if Stephin Merritt wants to be taken seriously. He writes about serious themes and sings in a low, somber voice, but his lyrics are often tongue-in-cheek. He has also been known to perform stage antics, which seems to go directly against his subdued personality. When I saw The Magnetic Fields at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Stephen Merritt was dressed as a boy scout leader, which is ironic because the boy scouts are a group that represents a type of conformity that would directly clash against Stephen Merritt’s personality. The Magnetic Fields have a rich, ornate sound when they perform live due to their extensive use of acoustic instruments. They often play with such instruments as classical guitars, a cello, a ukulele, an autoharp, a banjo, and a grand piano. They also add a modern twist to their sound by using synthesizers to create atmospheric layers to the music. The Magnetic Fields also switch up their dynamics on stage with there being times when Stephen Merritt alternates his deep, macabre voice with Claudia Gonson angelic, soprano voice. Sam Davol’s grandiose cello playing and John Woo’s pleasant guitar strumming appropriately adds great depths to the music. A Magnetic Fields concert is quite a pleasing experience, creating lush, beautiful sounds for the ears. The performance of their music is also an experience that might make you laugh, cry, or put you in a deep state of thought.

The Magnetic Fields’ Quickies  five 7" vinyl box set is twenty-eight new short songs by Stephin Merritt, ranging in length from thirteen seconds to two minutes and thirty-five seconds, performed by Merritt and band members Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms, and John Woo, along with longtime friends and collaborators Chris Ewen, Daniel Handler, and Pinky Weitzman. Also available on a single CD.

The Magnetic Fields’ Quickies will be released on Nonesuch Records on May 15, 2020. The five 7" vinyl box set features twenty-eight new short songs by Stephin Merritt, ranging in length from thirteen seconds to two minutes and thirty-five seconds. Preorders of the vinyl box set, also on a single CD, are available now in the Nonesuch Store with an instant download of "The Day the Politicians Died," the video for which can be seen below. The song is also available to stream at Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services. Nonesuch Store pre-orders also include an exclusive, limited-edition print autographed by Merritt.

Merritt explains his thinking behind the Quickies concept: “I’ve been reading a lot of very short fiction, and I enjoyed writing 101 Two-Letter Words , the poetry book about the shortest words you can use in Scrabble. And I’ve been listening to a lot of French baroque harpsichord music. Harpsichord doesn’t lend itself to languor. So I’ve been thinking about one instrument at a time, playing for about a minute or so and then stopping, and I’ve been thinking of narratives that are only a few lines long.

“Also, I had been using a lot of small notebooks, so when I reach the bottom of the page, I’ve only gone a short way. Now that I’m working on a different album, I’m enforcing a large notebook rule so that I don’t do Quickies twice in a row.”

Quickies features Merritt and other Magnetic Fields band members Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms, and John Woo. They are joined by longtime friends and collaborators Chris Ewen, Daniel Handler, and Pinky Weitzman.

New York magazine called the box set “a celebration of Merritt’s sky-high range as a writer and a player, through the exploration of the circumstances that helped cultivate it … a delightful flip through the untold back pages of one of rock’s most singular voices, and, all in all, the best damned Magnetic Fields album in the last ten years.” Merritt has also composed original music and lyrics for several music theater pieces, including an off-Broadway stage musical of Neil Gaiman’s novel Coraline , for which he received an Obie Award. In 2014, Merritt composed songs and background music for the first musical episode of public radio’s This American Life . Stephin Merritt also releases albums under the band names the 6ths, the Gothic Archies, and Future Bible Heroes.

Field announced for the 2024 Volvo China Open

Excitement builds as the 2024 Volvo China Open makes its highly anticipated return to the DP World Tour schedule. China’s premier open golf tournament is set to unfold from May 2-5 at the pristine Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen.

Picture1

After a five-year hiatus from the DP World Tour, the 29th edition of the Volvo China Open has drawn a formidable international field, captivating golf enthusiasts from across China and around the globe. Boasting an impressive total prize fund of $2.25 million, the event guarantees high stakes and thrilling competition.

Organized by the China Golf Association and co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the China Tour, the 2024 Volvo China Open will showcase a diverse field of accomplished and rising stars from around the world of golf. Among them are Jordan Smith, Yannik Paul, and Zander Lombard, alongside defending champion Sarit Suwannarut. Notably, previous Volvo China Open champions Nicolas Colsaerts (2011), Alexander Levy (2014, 2017), Ashun Wu (2015), Haotong Li (2016), Huilin Zhang (2020), and Zhang Jin (2021) will also tee it up in this year’s tournament. This blend of international heavy hitters and homegrown heroes promises a riveting display of talent and competition, sure to captivate the thousands of fans expected to attend.

England’s Jordan Smith has a total of seven professional victories to his credit including two wins on the DP World Tour. His last campaign at Hidden Grace Golf Club in 2019 saw him finish tied for fifth.

Smith expresses his anticipation for the Volvo China Open, stating, “I haven’t played in Shenzhen since 2019 and I like the course and I think it suits my game. I’ve had good results there in the past and so it’s been on my schedule for a while.”

He also shares his excitement about reconnecting with Chinese fans, noting, “Golf is such a massive sport there and I am looking forward to seeing thousands of passionate fans, who have a great knowledge and respect for the game.”

“I’m hoping we can put on a good show,” Smith added.

Also returning to Hidden Grace Golf Club is the winner of the 2023 Volvo China Open and defending champion, Sarit Suwannarut. The 26-year-old Thai golfer secured victory last year with impressive scores of 65 and 64 in the third and fourth rounds, marking his second win on the Asian Tour following his first-place finish at the Indonesian Masters in 2022.

Suwannarut credited his success last year to his mindset, emphasizing, “I felt like I knew what to do in tough situations, which combined with both consistent hitting and putting.”

Reflecting on his experience, Suwannarut feels confident about navigating the course but is equally enthusiastic about competing on the DP World Tour this year. He stated, “I’ll be focusing on the process and what I can control and hopefully it pays off. I’m looking forward to winning and playing alongside the top players in the world.”

Yannik Paul of Germany is set to make his debut appearance at the China Volvo Open. In 2022 he claimed his first European Tour victory and this season is building on strong performances including a fourth place finish at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in January.

Expressing his anticipation for the tournament and the course, Paul shares, “I haven’t been to China before, but my caddy Oliver has previously caddied at the course in Shenzhen. He spoke highly of the event and emphasized how impressed he was with the course conditions during the last edition.”

“I hope a lot of local fans will come out to support us and hopefully watch some great golf. I’ll do my best to be in the mix come Sunday afternoon," said Paul.

Zander Lombard, a DP World Tour favorite from South Africa, is eager to make his mark on the course. The 29-year-old golfer has enjoyed a strong start to the season, clinching a second-place finish at the Bahrain Championship in February.

Though still in pursuit of his first DP World Tour victory, Lombard arrives at the tournament feeling prepared and rejuvenated. “I'm super excited to see the golf course and the challenges that it has in store for us. It fits great into my season, as I have had a few weeks off and we'll be in Asia for a couple of weeks - it is a really nice way to start off the spring stretch,” he stated.

He acknowledges the significance of the tournament's return to the European Tour, stating, “The DP World Tour is really looking forward to getting back to China to compete in the Volvo China Open, and it is a great opportunity for locals, of all ages, to get out and support some of the world's best golfers and witness some fantastic golf shots!”

Certainly, Haotong Li is anticipated to be a local favorite in the tournament, given his victory in the 2016 Volvo China Open. With three DP World Tour victories, he is recognized as one of he is one of the leading names in Chinese golf. As he returns to compete once again, spectators will be eagerly following his performance to see if he can return to the top of the leaderboard.

Cosmic rays streamed through Earth's atmosphere 41,000 years ago: New findings on the Laschamps excursion

E arth's magnetic field protects us from the dangerous radiation of space, but it is not as permanent as we might believe. Scientists at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly present new information about an 'excursion' 41,000 years ago where our planet's magnetic field waned, and harmful space rays bombarded the planet.

Earth's magnetic field cocoons our planet from the onslaught of cosmic radiation streaming through space while also shielding us from charged particles hurled outward by the sun. But the geomagnetic field is not stationary. Not only does magnetic north wobble, straying from true north (a geographically defined location), but occasionally, it flips. During these reversals, north becomes south, south becomes north, and in the process, the intensity of the magnetic field wanes.

But there's also something called magnetic field excursions, brief periods in which the intensity of the magnetic field wanes and the dipole (or two magnetic poles) that we're familiar with can disappear, replaced with multiple magnetic poles. The Laschamps excursion that occurred around 41,000 years ago is among the best studied. It features a low magnetic field intensity that implies less protection for Earth's surface from harmful space rays. Periods of low magnetic field intensity could correlate to major upheavals in the biosphere.

To see when cosmic rays were heavily bombarding Earth's surface, scientists can measure cosmogenic radionuclides in cores from both ice and marine sediment. These special isotopes are produced by the interaction between cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere; they are born of cosmic rays, hence they are cosmogenic.

Times of lower paleomagnetic field intensity—less shielding—should correlate to higher rates of cosmogenic radionuclide production in the atmosphere. Sanja Panovska, a researcher at GFZ Potsdam, Germany will present her findings about the relationship between paleomagnetic field intensity and cosmogenic nuclides during the Laschamps excursion, with a focus on space climate, next week during the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2024.

Variations in cosmogenic radionuclides like beryllium-10 provide an independent proxy of how Earth's paleomagnetic intensity changed. Indeed, Panovska found that the average production rate of beryllium-10 during the Laschamps excursion was two times higher than present-day production, implying very low magnetic field intensity and lots of cosmic rays reaching Earth's atmosphere.

To wring more information from both cosmogenic radionuclide and paleomagnetic data, Panovska reconstructed the geomagnetic field using both datasets. Her reconstructions show that during the Laschamps excursion, the magnetosphere shrank when the field dramatically decreased, "thus reducing the shielding of our planet," she said.

"Understanding these extreme events is important for their occurrence in the future, space climate predictions, and assessing the effects on the environment and on the Earth system."

Her reconstructions show that during the Laschamps excursion, the magnetosphere shrank when the field dramatically decreased, “thus reducing the shielding of our planet,” she said. “Understanding these extreme events is important for their occurrence in the future, space climate predictions, and assessing the effects on the environment and on the Earth system.”

To learn more about this work, Panovska will give an oral presentation during session EMRP3.3 at EGU 2024 on Friday, 19 April, 14:05-14:15 CEST, Room -2.20
