Backpack Review Quechua Forclaz + Comparisons with all 50-80L Quechua Backpacks!

Posted on Last updated: March 25, 2022

As a backpacker, you always have a bit of a love-hate relationship with your backpack, right? You have to log it along on planes, buses, through customs and re-pack it a gazillion times. But at the same time, if you have a backpack that is of good quality, it can mean a world of difference in how you experience your life on the road.

I’ve only ever had two backpacks in my life, the first was a heavy beige, brand-less pack that I got for my very first solo trip (to Tokyo and Australia) in 2006 and the second, the Quechua Forclaz 60 Backpack I got for my second world trip in 2008, that ended up during 7 months through various countries in Asia and Oceania. After that, I ended up bringing the same backpack back to Australia when me and Nick move there to live in Sydney for two years.

Me and my backpack have been through a lot. It has seen music festivals, hiked through the Annapurna mountain region in Nepal, got lost in India and lost in Fiji, survived many border securities and got shampoo all over it on the way back from Australia to Holland. But, without this bag, I couldn’t have made all these amazing trips!

Backpack Review Quechua Forclaz + Comparisons with all 50-80L Quechua Backpacks! || The Travel Tester

Back in Europe, we started taking more weekend breaks rather than long-haul trips and I’ve been using a trolley and recently my Standard luggage 3-in-1 carry-on backpack . But every now and then, I make a bigger trip and out the good old Quechua backpack 60L comes. And I’m still happy with it!

In this review, I tell you all about the features of this backpack. While the exact model doesn’t exist anymore, I love the quality of the brand Quechua (we also have their tent) and this review should give you a good guide on what to look for in a backpack if you’re considering buying one for your travels.

Let’s have a look!

Backpack Review Quechua Forclaz + Comparisons with all 50-80L Quechua Backpacks! || The Travel Tester

Backpack Review Quechua Forclaz 60

(+ answering questions you’ll probably have when buying your own backpack).

What size of backpack to buy?

As I said, I bought the Quechua Forclaz 60 for my second world trip, as my old backpack was too heavy, too small and just not very practical in general. I bought the bag for around 75 Euro’s at Decathlon in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

While prize was definitely a factor, I really looked for a backpack that had a minimum of 60 Liters, as my previous backpack was a lot smaller (I think around 50 liters) and I just needed more space. When you go out in search for a backpack, I recommend looking for something between 60-70 liters as well, except perhaps if you’re either a small person (then maybe 50-60 would be enough), or big and strong (then 70-80 should be enough). There are also 90 liter packs, but I really think that’s a crazy amount of space that you don’t really need unless you go serious trekking and need to fit a tent, etc.

Be aware that the bigger bag you buy, the more (unnecessary) crap you will carry around. Even with this 60 liter bag, I sometime managed to get about 20-25 kilo’s worth of stuff in. That’s NOT fun to have to carry on your back! Stay around 15 kilo’s and you’ll really enjoy your trip more. And probably won’t even miss those things you leave behind!

mochila travel 100 60l

I Japan, I had the backpack Quechua with clothing strapped to the top, a day bag AND another camera bag. What the WHAT?

No wonder my smile here is a bit forced (and my hair has exploded)

What type of backpack to buy?

Another reason I picked this backpack, was because it was designed specifically for woman . That means the frame is set on our type of torso and straps are padded to suit our body type. Another BIG plus of this pack is that you can adjust the frame and belt yourself, which means you can really make sure that when it’s fully loaded, the pressure of the straps falls in all the right places. This can mean a world of different in how the backpack feels on your back.

As I learned from my previous backpack, I knew that a backpack that you can only load from the top is a bit of a nightmare, as you have to basically take everything out when you’re looking for something on the bottom, so I also looked specifically for a ‘ front loader ’ backpack. The Forclaz 60 as I bought has a zipper running over the full-length of the pack, so I can open it all the way and easily look inside. This way, I can also make use of all the space inside, because if there is a mini-hole, I can use the zipper (which opens both top to bottom as the other way around) to get somewhere and stuff in another piece of clothing. And believe me, I do this a LOT, as I can never decide on what to pack :) Looking at later bags though, I think I would in future prefer a zipper that goes  around  the bag (instead of through the middle), so you can open it like you would a  suitcase.

Finally, fabric was important to me, because my first backpack was really quite stiff, so when packing, I wasted a lot of space because the material just didn’t give much. The Quechua bags are made of flexible Polyester, so enough wiggle room.

Backpack Review Quechua Forclaz 60 || The Travel Tester

My backpack is currently covered in country flags.. still missing quite a few thought!

What else should I be looking for in a backpack?

As I’m a serious over-packer AND I have a terrible back, wearing comfort is very important to me and luckily the Quechua Forclaz fits my body well. It has a thick, padded waist belt that gives me a lot of support (always try to pack the heaviest things in your bag closest to your waist and lower back for support), the (adjustable) shoulder straps are padded and broad enough to make sure they don’t cut me in the arms, even when the bag is heavy.

I really like the ‘ thumb loops ‘ at the the shoulder straps. These are little ‘handles’ hanging from the shoulder straps, which you can stick your thumb or hands in and pull a bit down. I’m not quite sure how it works, but as it releases some of the weight of the bag, walking becomes a bit easier! You really pull yourself up, so to say.

mochila travel 100 60l

The bottom part of the backpack can be ‘closed off’ from the larger top compartment of the bag with a zipper, which means you could use this part to keep your dirty shoes or laundry in, or anything else you’d like to keep separate. I like that the big compartment also has a flat pocket against the bag, where you can keep documents, books and magazines, and I use this a lot for that! It runs all the way to the bottom, so good for hiding things as well as it’s not easy to get to. And finally *takes a deep breath*… there is a secret zipper pocket inside the hood of the bag, which is hard to see, so perfect for storing spare money and other important things you don’t want easy access to.

Other Quechua Backpack Types:

While the exact backpack I bought in 2008 doesn’t exist anymore (the name exists, but many improvements have been made), I had a look at all the other Quechua backpacks out there and decided to make an overview for you, so you can do your own Quechua review.

Here are all the similar packs, ranging from 50 Liters to 80 (70+10) Liters:

Quechua Backpack Comparison:

All of the Quechua travel backpacks below have Side Pockets on the outside, Compression Straps (to press your pack together), Load Adjuster Straps (on top of the shoulder straps, to move the pack closer to your body and make it lighter), Foam Straps (Shoulder Straps), a Chest Strap (to prevent the bag from moving when you walk,  Thumb loops (so you can hold this for easy walking) and Pole Loops (to tie your walking poles to).

Thank for your review! I’m still torn between Forclaz 50 or 60l. I would prefer them to fit carry on size without overpacking but wanted something big enough so I can carry extra stuff while on foot like my hiking boots etc. What do you think?

Nienke Krook

Hi Noorhidayah, the 60L is probably too big for carry on, so would go for the 50L in that case, check the dimensions of the bag with your airline to be sure!

Tuesday 15th of August 2017

Great review, many thanks! Question: does your bag have that kind of small pocket with a waterproof cover stored in it? Or should I buy a separate waterproof cover? Or, to put it differently, how do you take your bag when it's raining?

Friday 16th of June 2017

Hey Marit, yes, this bag does have a raincover in a little pocket at the bottom of the bag, very handy!

Fala galera, tudo bem??

https://www.decathlon.com.br/mochila-masculina-de-trekking-trek100-50-litros/p?aSku=Cor:cinza-carbono&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc-search&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhf2MBhDNARIsAKXU5GQwfWWzEhBSawiX7B3r81L_PPPo4B4UNdDlFpgRquScKfp8pBKFYeQaApJLEALw_wcB

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

Nightlife, arts and culture listings for moscow.

The Moscow Times english-language newspaper publishes a weekly listing of events, also available on their website: www.themoscowtimes.com/arts_n_ideas/calendar/

Another good English-language resource is A-A-AH  – www.a-a-ah.com/events-in-moscow – which has a good clubs listings and publishes interesting cultural events.

Your best way, though, is to go on Facebook pages of the places we recommend in our Moscow Guide and check out what's on there. We post the most interesting events on our Way to Russia Facebook Page as well, so check it out occasionally!

A great listing of public lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences happening in Moscow is available on Theory and Practice portal – www.tandp.ru – even though it's in Russian you can find really interesting talks on Russian cinema, software development, literary studies and anything else you want on there.

Among the Russian listings, Afisha (www. afisha.ru ) magazine is the most popular one.  While being slightly pretentious, it provides a lot of information and has good nightlife and art listings.

Another interesting newspaper is Bolshoy Gorod – www.bg.ru – which is distributed for free and has extensive listings. They also have a blog for each area of Moscow (in Russian).

Finally, Look At Me - www.lookatme.ru – is a sure source to find some party or exhibition you like.

Newspapers & Magazines

In english language,   in russian language.

The weekly Komsomolka is the local version of the UK Sun, but intelligentsia (smart people) prefer the free Bolshoy Gorod, which is a bit like the local version of The Village Voice, but not as big.

The "mainstream" fashion is determined by bi-weekly Afisha ( www.afisha.ru ) magazine.

The weekly Expert ( www.expert.ru ) and Itogi ( www.itogi.ru ) magazines provide comprehensive business, finance, and politics analysis.

The monthly magazines are anything from Playboy to Forbes, and from Cosmopolitan to The Rolling Stone.

Foreign Press

You can buy foreign magazines and newspapers in Moscow. Usually, they are sold in 5-star hotels, but the prices there are much too high. Also, you can try some newstands in the city (especially on Tverskaya St.), but the prices are high also, and the selection is poor.

However, there's a couple of places in Moscow, where you can get almost any magazine or newspaper, in English and in other languages. 1. Maxim's News Stand. They have everything, if they don't -- you can order. Prices are lower than on the cover. Also, they sell books and movies in English. Metro: Savyolovskaya (grey line, north center), Address: Nizhnyaya Maslovska, #2 (an underground pass near Savyolovskaya metro). Open hours: Mon-Sat 11.00 to 19.30 2. Arbat Supermarket. Just next to the entrance they sell some English-language magazines and fresh newspapers. Metro: Arbatskaya. Address: Novy Arbat st, Novoarbatsky supermarket - grocery store (there's only one, the entrance is on the street side). 3. Bookberry. The new Moscow book supermarket has an extensive section of foreign magazines and newspapers at moderate prices. Metro: Arbatskaya, Tverskaya (blue, purple line). Address: Boulevard Ring (walk from Novy Arbat towards Pushkinskaya square along Zubovsky boulevard and the shop will be to your left). Open hours: Mon-Sun 10.00-20.00

4. Gorbushka. The famous Moscow pirate CD, DVD, Software and official electronics market specializes in foreign music and DJ magazines. Address: metro Bagrationovskaya (Moscow west), a large building outside the exit - the crowds walks in its direction. Open hours: Mon-Sun 10.00-20.00 If for some reason you can't buy the thing you need in any of the shops above, try to go to some European or American medical or dental center - they have a great selection of magazines in their reception areas.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

mochila travel 100 60l

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

mochila travel 100 60l

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

mochila travel 100 60l

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

mochila travel 100 60l

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

mochila travel 100 60l

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

mochila travel 100 60l

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

mochila travel 100 60l

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

mochila travel 100 60l

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

mochila travel 100 60l

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

mochila travel 100 60l

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

mochila travel 100 60l

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

mochila travel 100 60l

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

mochila travel 100 60l

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

mochila travel 100 60l

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

mochila travel 100 60l

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

mochila travel 100 60l

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

mochila travel 100 60l

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

mochila travel 100 60l

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

mochila travel 100 60l

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
