Hard rockers Kix have enjoyed a career that has lasted over three decades, having broken out of their hometown of Hagerstown, Maryland, US with their debut album in 1981.

Starting life in 1977, the band tested several different names, from Shooze to The Generators, before deciding upon Kix. Performing regularly in Baltimore, they established themselves’ as one of the city’s most popular hard rock bands, attracting the attention of Atlantic Records, with whom they signed with in 1981. Featuring frontman Steve Whitman, drummer Kimmy Chalfont, bassist Donnie Purnell (the creative force of the band) and guitarists Ronnie Younkins and Brian Jay Forsythe. Their self-titled debut came out that same year, following which the band toured the east coast extensively. Their second, “Cool Kids,” in 1983, displayed a more mainstream, commercial sound, appearing as an attempt to appease their label.

Kid effectively had their entire stage act stolen from them by the younger band, Poison, who emulated Kix’s glam metal, with their frontman Brett Michaels mimicking the style of Whiteman. Witnessing this younger, more popular act copy their signature sound shocked Kix, although they remained undeterred, returning to the studio in 1988 for “Blow My Fuse.” The album was to be their breakthrough hit, featuring the massively successful single, “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band moved from small venues to arena performances, gaining support slots for the likes of AC/DC, Aerosmith and David Lee Roth. Despite this success, financially, Kix had made no one off the record, finding themselves in debt to Atlantic Records. Returning with their fifth album, “Hot Wire,” in 1991, Kix also found themselves with an ever decreasing audience, due the explosion of grunge and alt. rock dominating the mainstream rock charts. Their brand of hard-rocking glam metal was consigned to antiquity as new acts like Mudhoney, Sonic Youth and Nirvana moved in.

Kid continued to tour and make releases. However, these records continuously failed to live up to expectations, with mediocre sales and decreasing audience sizes. Enthusiasm for the band waned and members embarked on various side projects between 1996 and 2002. Yet in 2003, a new version of Kix returned, albeit without band leader Donnie Purnell. After persistent touring, Kix eventually gained a new recording contract with Frontiers Records in 2012, releasing a live CD/DVD, “Live in Baltimore.” They then returned to the studio for their first full-length album in almost twenty years, releasing “Rock Your Face Off” in 2014.

Live reviews

This band doesn't call themselves the dirty boys of the underground for nothing. Kix may be the name of a cereal, but this Kix isn't for kids. They have a sharp rock sound and after all these years, they have not lost a single step. Their guitars shred and front man Steve Whiteman's vocals have only gotten better with age.

They have some great hits such as "Cold Blood", "Girl Money, "Midnite Dynamite", and their biggest hit "Don't Close Your Eyes". They always put on a great show and have a tremendous rapport with their fans. They like to rock hard and they want you to scream and sing your heart out right along with them. If you like to party with a bit of an edge, then I highly recommend Kix.

Absolutely kickass show! The sound & atmosphere was great & electric, but most of all the band was absolutely awesome! They had all the energy & enthusiasm you saw from them 20 years ago & could tell they were not just going through the motions but were happy to be here putting on the show. Kix rocks!

Show was great! Sound was off a bit being front row but if you knew the songs it didn't really matter. Wish they'd come out this way more often. The venue is a bit odd in it's layout; a pool in the middle of the patio make for some lost standing room and difficult viewing angles. Come early.

Kix Bids Emotional Farewell at Final Show: Set List and Videos

Kix put a bow on a 45-plus-year career on Sunday with their final concert at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. You can see the set list and videos below.

Vocalist Steve Whiteman previously stated that the rockers wanted to end things on a high note. "I don't want to go out sucking — I want to go out being pretty good," he explained on a recent episode of SiriusXM's  Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk  (via  Blabbermouth ). "But age takes its toll."

Kix hit their mark at their farewell show, blazing through an epic 18-song set that dug deep into their catalog and offered an impressive time capsule of career highlights. The performance touched on many of their albums, particularly their 1981 self-titled debut and 1988's platinum-certified  Blow My Fuse .

Special Moments From Kix's Farewell Show

Kix was well represented by both past and present members during their final show. Drummer Jimmy Chalfant was back in the fold this year after suffering a heart attack onstage in 2021.

Guitarist Brad Divens, who played on 1983’s Cool Kids , and longtime guitarist Ronnie Younkins, who exited the lineup in late 2020 due to personal issues , also made appearances, joining the group onstage for several songs. Both six-stringers teamed up on the closing one-two punch of "Tear Down the Walls / Walkin' Away" and "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah."

At the end of the performance, Whiteman took the time to thank every member of Kix's behind-the-scenes team, from stage managers to merchandise sellers. He then shared his appreciation for the fans.

“You guys have been incredible," the singer told the hometown crowd. "For 45 years we’ve been doing this, and anytime we played in this area, you people came out in droves. You went crazy. We love you, you’re the best, we will miss you! Thank you all very much for all these years of rock 'n' roll, for being the best fans ever. We love you. Goodnight!”

The Future of Kix

Although plenty of bands have retired and continued to work on new material, Whiteman said in a 2023 interview that likely won't be the case for Kix.

"Nobody was interested in any of the material I had for a new Kix record, which is why I did that solo record [2021's You're Welcome ] in the first place," he explained. "But I'm ready to move on. My wife is retiring in December, and we want to go out and do things. Because for the last 20 years, she's been working all week for a school district, and then I'm gone on weekends. So, I would say a new Kix album is probably a no."

Watch: KIX Plays One Of Its Last-Ever Concerts At 2023 YORK STATE FAIR

Fan-filmed video of KIX 's entire July 24 concert at the York State Fair in York, Pennsylvania can be seen below.

Two months ago, KIX vocalist Steve Whiteman opened up about the band's announcement that it will retire after more than 45 years, telling Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station in an interview: "I came to the conclusion probably over a year ago, and I went to the guys and I told them. I said, 'Guys, at the end of 2023, I think I'm done.' I'm sick to death of the travel and the hotels and the waiting in green rooms. It takes three days to do a show anymore because it's all 'fly dates,' one-offs. So I just to the point where I'm 66 and my wife is ready to retire. And we just wanna enjoy life."

Asked whether he has thought about what it will be like to walk off the stage for the final time, Steve said: "Yeah, I have. And I'm ready for it. And the other thing is when [ KIX drummer] Jimmy Chalfant collapsed on stage in November, when he went down with a near-death heart attack, it just changed the whole perspective of what we're doing in our later years. Jimmy decided that he was gonna stop this September. And we were actually originally gonna stop in Hinckley, Minnesota. I just wanted to just kind of fade away; I didn't wanna make a big announcement or do a 'whore tour' or anything like that. But the guys talked me into doing one big final splash in our hometown area. So we're gonna do Merriweather Post in Columbia, Maryland. It holds about 15, 16 thousand people. And it's already up to, like, eight thousand sold. So it's gonna be a hoot."

This past May, Whiteman confirmed to Metal Edge that Chalfant 's recent health scare — he collapsed onstage nine months ago after suffering a cardiac arrest — expedited his decision to stop playing shows. "For sure," he said. "When Jimmy collapsed in November, that put a whole new perspective on things. It was the sort of thing that got me thinking, 'How much longer do we want to do this?' And if I'm being honest, I was ready to give up and go home then and there. But everybody rallied and pushed me to keep going and finish the dates we had booked. That's when we decided to go until this coming September. We knew we had these summer days, and Jimmy — once he felt good enough to get onstage — put his foot down and said, 'September is it for me.'"

On the topic of whether KIX guitarist Ronnie Younkins — who has been unable to tour with the group for the past couple of years after repeatedly getting in trouble with the police due to his battle with alcoholism — will be part of the final show ( Ronnie is being replaced in KIX by Bob Paré ), Steve said: " Bob is definitely going to be part of the show. The hope is that Ronnie will be there as a guest player. We're hoping and assuming he'll come up and do a couple of songs with us. We hope he does because it would be amazing for our fans. I also think we'll call up Brad Divens , who played on the 'Cool Kids' album."

For its recent live appearances, including the Monsters Of Rock cruise, KIX had been using drummer Matt Starr , who has previously played with Ace Frehley , MR. BIG and BLACK SWAN , among others. Asked if Jimmy 's heart is healthy enough to wrap this up, or if Starr will remain on standby, Whiteman told Metal Edge : " Matt 's on standby, but Jimmy feels pretty confident he can do this. He was on the recent cruise with us and came up and did a few songs at the end of the set. He feels great, has been practicing at home, and is ready to do these final summer shows we've planned. We love Matt , but having Jimmy is so important to us. But the thing with that is Jimmy will not be able to do background vocals. He feels that if he plays drums and sings simultaneously, his heart rate increases to a point that makes him nervous. So, we'll miss that a lot, but we'll get Bob to sing more."

KIX 's last-ever concert will take place on September 17 at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.

The Baltimore-based act, which formed in 1977, announced its plan to call it quits during an appearance on May 7 at the M3 Rock Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Chalfant rejoined his KIX bandmates on stage for two songs — "Cold Blood" and "Blow My Fuse" — during the band's set on April 30 aboard this year's Monsters Of Rock cruise. It marked his first live appearance with KIX since he collapsed onstage. Chalfant also performed with KIX at the M3 Rock Festival .

On November 18, 2022, Chalfant suffered a cardiac arrest during KIX 's concert at the Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg, Virginia. Chalfant was unconscious and carried offstage before performing the last song of the show.

Paré is an accomplished musician who studied at the Music Institute in Los Angeles and taught music theory and guitar at several institutions, including Western Maryland College and Maryland Institute of Music.

Bob was a session musician for several independent label releases, and has spent most of his long career performing live in the Maryland and Washington, D.C. area with various bands, including FORCER , EVER RISE , PROJECT: EUPHORIA and, most recently, the RUSH tribute band SUN DOGS with KIX bassist Mark Schenker .

KIX was founded in 1977 and released its first, self-titled album on Atlantic Records more than 40 years ago. Their breakthrough came with 1988's "Blow My Fuse" , which sold nearly a million copies, thanks to "Don't Close Your Eyes" . The band continued to ride the hard-rock wave until 1995, when KIX took a hiatus. Nearly 10 years later, KIX reunited and started touring regionally. A 2008 performance at the Rocklahoma festival led to more gigs and the release of a live DVD/CD called "Live In Baltimore" in 2012. In 2014, KIX released its seventh full-length album, "Rock Your Face Off" , the band's first studio effort since 1995's "Show Business" . The album debuted at No. 1 on Amazon's Hard Rock and Metal chart, in the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 chart, No. 5 on the Independent Albums chart, No. 11 on the Top Internet chart, No. 17 on the Top Rock Albums chart, No. 27 on the Indie/Small Chain Core Stores chart and No. 33 on the Physical chart.

KIX released "Can't Stop The Show: The Return Of KIX" in October 2016, a two-disc DVD/CD set that entered the Billboard Top Music Video Sales chart at No. 3 and rose to the No. 1 position, the band's highest-charting debut and first No. 1 ever in their 35-year history. The 71-minute film offered an in-depth look into KIX 's decision to record their first new album, in almost 20 years.

In 2018, KIX celebrated the 30th anniversary of their biggest album, "Blow My Fuse" , with "Blow My Fuse Re-Blown" , a two-disc set with a remixed/remastered version of the album, along with the original demo recordings for all 10 songs. The reunion with longtime collaborator Beau Hill for this remix sparked the initiative to revisit "Midnite Dynamite" and take a similar approach to updating KIX 's legacy.

On the 35th anniversary of the release of "Midnite Dynamite" , KIX released "Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit" in November 2020. For "Midnite Dynamite Re-Lit" , KIX partnered with Hill for a blistering update of the fan-favorite album.

Veteran Rockers Kix to Call It Quits After Final Maryland Concert in September

The long-running hard rock act is playing its last show in its home state

Veteran Rockers Kix to Call It Quits After Final Maryland Concert in September

Hard rock veterans Kix have announced their retirement following one final concert on September 17th at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. It will be a hometown sendoff for the band, which formed in Maryland in 1977.

Frontman Steve Whiteman revealed the news while performing onstage at that very venue on Sunday (May 7th) at part of the M3 Rock Festival. Tickets for the final show go on sale Tuesday (May 9th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . If the concert sells out, fans can also look for tickets via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

“We’ve decided that after 45 years of doing this, I think we’re gonna call it a career,” Whiteman told the audience [as transcribed by Blabbermouth ]. “Not tonight. We’re gonna do a show here September 17th. It’s been a long, long, long road. And my health is failing. [Kix drummer] Jimmy [Chalfant’s] health is definitely failing. And we just decided we’re gonna finish up these dates through the summer. And we were gonna end in Hinckley, Minnesota. And we thought, ‘Who the fuck wants to end a career in Hickley, Minnesota?'”

Whiteman continued: “So we brainstormed, and we said, ‘We wanna do one big final rock and roll show in the area,’ because you guys deserve it. No offense, Hinckley, but fuck that. So September 17th will be our final show, and we’re lucky enough to be doing it here [at the Merriweather Post Pavilion], so we hope you all will come join us. Will you come join us for our final show? We’re countin’ on you. So, it’s sad, but it’s just time. You know when it’s time. It’s like an athlete. You know when it’s time. And I think it’s time. I’m tired. I can’t fucking do this anymore.”

Whiteman later told Metal Edge that the decision to retire was made about a year ago, before Chalfant collapsed onstage during a Kix show seven months ago after suffering cardiac arrest. Whiteman said Chalfant’s health scare “put a whole new perspective on things” and he also cited his own health ailments as a main reason for calling it quits.

“It might seem sudden, but this is a decision that I made around a year ago,” Whiteman said. “I gave it a lot of thought, decided, and announced it to the guys in the band and our booking agents. I knew at that point that I was probably going to be done by the of 2023. It’s been 45 years of nonstop rock ‘n’ roll, travel, and hanging out, and I don’t have the time to commit to it anymore. I’m 66. I’ve got neuropathy in my feet. I’m tired.”

Kix originally formed as a heavy power-pop band and were based in Baltimore for much of their career, garnering a dedicated regional following throughout the 1980s.

The band’s biggest brush with fame came via 1988’s Blow My Fuse . Produced by Beau Hill, the major-label release saw Kix embrace the hard rock/glam metal that was popular at the time, notching MTV staples with singles “Cold Blood” and “Don’t Close Your Eyes” — the latter becoming the band’s biggest hit.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
