'I wanted to end his suffering': Capitol Hill suspect brutally stabs victim in front witnesses, docs

Man killed in seattle stabbing.

Seattle police are investigating a deadly stabbing Tuesday morning in the Capitol Hill neighborhood

SEATTLE - Newly obtained court documents reveal that the suspect who stabbed another man to death in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood on July 4 had no discernible reason behind the brutal attack.

The suspect, 53-year-old Sana Ceesay, was charged on Friday with first-degree murder and is currently being held in the King County Jail on a $2 million dollar bond.

On Tuesday at around 3:38 a.m., officers with the Seattle Police Department (SPD) responded to reports of a stabbing at the 76 Gas Station near the corner of E Pike St. and Broadway.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a man with multiple stab wounds . They attempted life-saving measures, but the victim, 45-year-old Fontaine Devon Jackson, died at the scene.

According to court documents, Ceesay chased down the victim and stabbed him 13 times in the back, neck and chest. After the victim initially fell to the ground, Ceesay continued stabbing the victim. Witnesses told police that the suspect then began cutting the victim's neck in a ‘sawing motion’.

Authorities say one witness approached officers at the scene and was able to clearly identify the suspect by pointing and shouting, ‘that’s him, that's him." While being interviewed by police, the witness said he struck the suspect with a rock. They also pointed out the knife that was used to police, which was collected and submitted into evidence.

Ceesay was arrested, and brought to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

Bail was set at $2 million for the man accused of stabbing another man to death in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Another witness interviewed by police said that he was loading work supplies into his van when the incident happened.

He told officers that he saw the suspect chase and then stab the victim with a large knife. The witness, armed with pepper spray, then ran up to the suspect and sprayed him in the face. This caused the suspect to take off running.

According to court documents, two more witnesses were parked at the gas station when the incident occurred. They told police that they heard the victim say something to the effect of, "why are you doing this, I don't even know you."

At around 12:05 p.m., Ceesay was transferred from the hospital to the SPD Headquarters.

When being interviewed, Ceesay told police that he had been in the area near the 76 station for around four to five hours before stabbing the victim. When asked why he did it, Ceesay said, "I wanted to end his suffering". Near the end of the interview, Ceesay accused the victim of stealing the charging cord to his cellphone.

Detectives immediately reviewed surveillance footage after the homicide, which according to court documents, clearly lined up with witness accounts.

Autopsy results from the King County Medical Examiner's Office showed that the victim was stabbed 13 times, once in the chest, six times in the neck and six times in the back.

It was determined that Ceesay's actions establish that he is a clear threat to the community, and justify his $2 million bail amount.

The prosecuting attorney also indicates how Ceesay's criminal history is concerning. In 2022, he was convicted for felony harassment after admitting to swinging an ax at a Plymouth Housing caseworker's head. In 2023, he was also convicted for misdemeanor harassment and assault for hitting a victim in the head with a rubber mallet.

Double stabbing in downtown Seattle leaves man with critical wounds

Seattle Police are investigating a double stabbing in an area that is a hot spot for crime.

Officers were called to the intersection of Third Avenue and Pike Street at around 3 a.m. after a Metro bus driver called 911.

Police arrived to find a 29-year-old man with non-life-threatening stab wounds. A short time later, a second victim, a 48-year-old man, was found. His stab wounds were critical.

Both men were taken to Harborview.

Police said an argument or physical fight led up to the stabbings. It is not known if others were involved.

A knife was found in a nearby parking garage.

Seattle Police Department spokesperson Judinna Gulpan said the Third Avenue and Pike Street corridor has been a problem area for crime.

Anyone with information about the stabbings is asked to call Seattle Police at 206-223-5000.

Seattle light rail stabbing seen on video as passengers confront attacker

Sound Transit surveillance video shows suspect Ishmail Brown attacking a fellow Seattle light rail passenger in what prosecutors call a "random and incredibly violent" attack. (Source: Kind County Prosecutor's Office)

Video shows an ex-convict stabbing a fellow Seattle light rail passenger more than a dozen times in what prosecutors deemed a "random and incredibly violent" attack.

The footage, first obtained by the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH, shows multiple light rail passengers step in to confront the attacker, possibly preventing a murder.

Ishmail Brown is now charged with first- and second-degree assault in connection to July 21 knife attack on Tin Vi Pham, according to documents filed in the Superior Court of Washington for King County. The state has requested bail be set at $1.5 million based on the likelihood that the defendant may commit a violent offense. Court documents dated July 25 reflect that while a probable cause hearing was held on the matter, Brown refused to appear, and therefore bail had not been set at that time.

"The defendant is a serious danger to the community," Brynn Jacobson, King County Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, wrote in the court filing. "The victim happened to be on the light rail at the same time as the defendant, sitting towards the back of the train. The defendant got up and attempted to open the doors, as if he missed his stop. He then turned back around, approached the victim and began to stab him without any provocation."

SEATTLE WOMAN KIDNAPPED, ESCAPES MAKESHIFT CELL IN OREGON HOME AS FBI SEEKS OTHER POSSIBLE VICTIMS

"The victim was essentially trapped in his seat as the defendant plunged the knife down from above, over and over again," the prosecutor continued. "The other passengers scrambled to find a way to help the victim once they realized what was happening. One passenger resorted to using his bag as a shield as others helped the victim escape while another threw his shoes at the defendant."

"Thanks to the bravery of the other passengers on the train, the victim was able to escape, though he still suffered 18 stab wounds and required emergency medical care," Jacobson concluded. "This attack was both random and incredibly violent."

Prosecutors note that Brown has felony convictions from 2008 for second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and from 2016 for second-degree arson. He also has misdemeanor convictions for reckless driving in 2002, reckless driving/racing in 2004 and misdemeanor DV no contact order violation in 2014.

Court documents say Brown would not speak with officers on scene but was advised of his Miranda Rights and brought to King County Jail.

The Vietnamese victim, brought to the same hospital, suffered ten stabs/cuts on the left leg, one stab/cut on the right leg, three stabs/cuts on the left hand, two stabs/cuts on the right hand and one stab/cut to the left of the face, according to court documents.

Rantz noted how Sound Transit announced in May that it was increasing light rail security by 300 guards. No guards were depicted on the attack video.

Seattle Police detectives and SWAT operators arrested the 48-year-old Madison Valley homicide suspect near his residence in Capitol Hill this morning.

Following latent fingerprint evidence recovered at Brighton Playfield, homicide detectives located the suspect’s residence not far from where the victim was killed. Multiple detectives conducted surveillance in the area and tracked the man as he was walking outside.

At about 10:30 a.m., the SWAT team was deployed to take the suspect into custody.

He was transported to Seattle Police Headquarters and interviewed by detectives. Police recovered a knife with blood on it and keys to the stolen vehicle. They have been collected as evidence.

The suspect was booked into King County Jail for Investigation of Homicide and Investigation of Animal Cruelty.

Homicide detectives requested charges for Murder in the 1st Degree under the felony murder rule, Assault in the 2nd Degree, and Animal Cruelty in the 1st Degree.

At 3:05 Seattle Police responded to a report from Seattle Animal Control that the deceased woman’s dog was located in a recycling bin within Brighton Playfield near the 3900 block of South Juneau Street. The dog had been stabbed to death with a knife.

Responding officers located the victim’s unoccupied blue Subaru Forester nearby that was stolen during the earlier carjacking and homicide in the Madison Valley neighborhood.

The suspect fled the area and was not located.

Patrol officers cordoned off the area. Detectives with the Homicide and Crime Scene Investigation Units responded to process the crime scene. The vehicle was taken to the Vehicle Processing Room for further evidence collection.

Seattle Police detectives are investigating a homicide in the Madison Valley neighborhood this morning.

At 9:55 a.m., patrol officers responded to reports of a carjacking near Martin Luther King Junior Way East and East Harrison Street. When officers arrived, they located an adult woman in the middle of the street. A bystander was performing CPR on the victim.

The Seattle Fire Department arrived on scene and continued medical treatment. Despite all life-saving efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police determined that the woman was a neighborhood dog walker. During the carjacking and struggle, she was dragged by her car and mortally wounded.

Multiple bystanders attempted to intervene, but they were unsuccessful.

The suspect fled the area in her stolen vehicle and was not located. Seattle Police are actively searching for him. No arrests have been made at this time.

Officers cordoned off the area until detectives with the Homicide, Crime Scene Investigation, and Traffic Collision Investigation Units arrived to process the crime scene.

Detectives with the Homicide Unit have been assigned to this investigation.

Coworkers mourn Seattle restaurant worker fatally stabbed at Capitol Hill station

SEATTLE - The bustling Capitol Hill neighborhood was rocked by tragedy on Saturday evening when a man was stabbed to death at a Seattle light rail station.

Authorities shut down the station as they investigated the attack, which claimed the life of a 37-year-old man.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was a beloved member of the community and worked at a popular Capitol Hill restaurant, Harry’s Fine Foods.

Following the deadly attack, the restaurant closed its doors on Sunday, Mother’s Day, and remained closed on Monday to allow time for mourning among its staff and patrons.

The owners of Harry’s Fine Foods told FOX 13 Seattle in a statement that their thoughts and love were with the victim and his family.

Details surrounding the murder remain scarce. Seattle police said the killer was a man and fled the scene after the stabbing, but officers said they had no further information to release. No description of the attacker has been released either, despite numerous surveillance cameras at the light rail station.

The lack of information has left residents unsettled, especially considering this is the second murder involving a light rail station in less than three months.

In late February, Seattle Police responded to a deadly shooting on one of the trains between Pioneer Square and University Street stations. In that case, a 26-year-old man was shot and died at the scene. A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault.

As the investigation continues, the community has rallied behind Harry’s Fine Foods, with plans underway for an event this upcoming Sunday to raise funds for the victim’s family.

Sound Transit provided the following statement to FOX 13 Seattle when asked about rider safety:

"The safety of our passengers and staff is Sound Transit’s top priority. We take any event that threatens the safety of our passengers and staff very seriously.

"The stabbing at Capitol Hill station  was horrifying and tragic, and we mourn the loss of this person’s life. We also know this alarming and tragic act understandably raises very real safety concerns. Even though violence around and on our system is exceedingly rare, passengers and staff want to know that they are safe when they are riding our trains.

"Over the past year, we have significantly increased the security levels in our system. In 2023, the Board voted to approve four new security contracts, totaling $250 million over six years.  On-site security presence across our system is now more than twice as large as it was in 2022. There are nearly 500 Transit Security officers in total. This is in addition to more than 65 King County Sheriff’s officers who serve as the agency’s transit police. This is part of a comprehensive effort to make riders feel more comfortable and safe riding on our system.

"To reassure riders about the safety of the system, they can expect to see an increased security presence in the coming days. We encourage anyone who feels unsafe or needs  security support, we to text Sound Transit Security at 206-398-5268."

This is a developing story; check back for updates.

Suspect sought after man stabbed in Seattle's Chinatown-International District

by KOMO News Staff

Seattle police investigate a stabbing Wednesday morning.

SEATTLE — Police were searching for a suspect after a man was stabbed and critically injured Wednesday morning in the Chinatown-International District, authorities said.

A 50-year-old man, was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment after being stabbed in the neck around 9:15 a.m. near the 1000 block of S. Jackson Street, police said in a written statement.

Police found the unidentified victim near 8th Avenue S., and S. Jackson Street with a stab wound to his neck, according to police.

Police said the suspect fled from the scene before officers arrived. It was not immediately clear if the victim knew the suspect or what led to the attack.

Investigators searched a nearby encampment for a possible scene of the crime but did not find one.

80-year-old dog walker killed in carjacking, man arrested: Police

The suspect has eight prior felony convictions.

A man has been arrested after he allegedly carjacked an 80-year-old dog walker, leaving her with fatal injuries before stabbing her dog to death, according to police.

James K. Hayes, a 48-year-old Seattle resident, was found and arrested Thursday morning in the murder of 80-year-old Ruth Dalton.

Police expect he will be charged with first-degree murder, murder during the commission of a robbery and first-degree animal cruelty. He has eight prior felony convictions -- including a vehicular homicide conviction from 1993 -- and a history of mental health concerns.

Police said he had a knife on him with blood on it when he was arrested.

Police were able to identify the suspect after they received a 911 call reporting that an individual was hurting a dog. An animal control officer then responded to the scene and found a dog that was stabbed to death. The dog was wearing a tag identifying the victim as its owner and the victim's car was found nearby.

Crime scene investigators were able to lift fingerprints from the victim's phone, which was in the car, and identify the suspect.

Seattle Police responded to a report of a carjacking on Wednesday and found a citizen giving aid to a woman who was down on the road.

Officers took over life-saving efforts until Seattle Fire Department officials showed up and took over. The victim died of her injuries Wednesday, police said.

Witnesses then told investigators that they had seen a struggle between the woman and the suspect inside the vehicle while the vehicle was moving. The vehicle then drove off the road and a struggle between them continued with the suspect trying to push the victim out of the vehicle as she resisted, according to police.

A witness then stopped their car in the road and came to assist her and the suspect took out a knife. The witness then backed away and retrieved a stick or bat and came back to try and help the woman, according to police.

PHOTO: During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Seattle Police Department Deputy Chief Eric Barden said Seattle Police detectives and SWAT operators arrested the 48-year-old Madison Valley homicide suspect near his residence in Capitol Hill.

The car then began to move across the road and crashed into two parked vehicles and the woman was struck during the crash. The suspect drove away from the scene and the victim was left on the street.

Police believe the suspect then drove to a park, stabbed the dog and fled on foot.

"We want to thank the community for the heroic actions of passers-by who just happened to see something like this happening and tried to intervene," Eric Barden, the deputy chief of the Seattle Police Department said during a press conference.

Police said they are unsure how the suspect got into the car before the carjacking and said that is under investigation. Police do not believe the suspect and the victim knew each other -- they think it is a random incident.

There were at least two dogs in the car, one of which escaped the car.

"This is a tragic and horrific incident where a wonderful member of our community was active and participating vibrantly in her community at 80 years old and that was snatched from her and from her family and friends and the community by virtue of this senseless violent act," Barden said.

Man held on $5 million bail in fatal stabbing on I-5 near Federal Way

A 44-year-old man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in King County Superior Court after prosecutors accused him of stabbing three people inside a car on Interstate 5 near Federal Way in June, killing the 19-year-old driver.

Judge Johanna Bender ordered Jeffery Scott, who was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree assault, to be held on $5 million bail. In a bail request, prosecutors described him as an “extreme threat to the public.”

On June 26, a Washington State Patrol trooper found Patriot LeMay dead in the driver’s seat with a large knife wound to his neck. Two of Scott’s fellow passengers, a 30-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, were taken to nearby hospitals with severe knife injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Family and friends of LeMay did not respond to a reporter’s requests for interviews.

After Scott allegedly stabbed LeMay, the teenager grabbed a gun and fired several times at Scott, then pulled over to the right side of the road and died from his injury, the affidavit states. An ambulance took Scott to a hospital after a deputy found him bleeding and with gunshot wounds on the ground next to the car.

Scott and the two surviving passengers have since been released from the hospital.

Days after the alleged attack, both Scott and the female passenger told detectives the group had smoked methamphetamine and fentanyl for hours in a Tacoma apartment before getting in the car, which police later determined was a stolen BMW, the affidavit states.

But Scott and the two surviving passengers shared different stories of what happened next, court records show.

As they drove north on the interstate, the woman reported Scott — “without warning” — cut LeMay’s throat with a large knife and stabbed her and the other man. She heard gunfire, got out of the car and ran south toward a weigh station for help, according to the affidavit.

The 32-year-old man told a detective he was in the back seat when Scott waved a 5-inch, double-sided knife and said, “‘I’m going to kill both you guys.’” The man said Scott then stabbed him in the back of the neck before stabbing LeMay and the woman. As LeMay grabbed a gun and started shooting at Scott, the man told detectives he jumped from the moving car and ran south, according to the affidavit.

Scott, however, told a detective that the other passengers tried to rob him at gunpoint, according to the affidavit. He said he felt forced to choose between jumping out of the car or stabbing LeMay to survive. He admitted to stabbing LeMay and the two other passengers and said a gold knife, which investigators found inside the BMW covered in blood, was his, according to the affidavit.

Scott told detectives he was from Florida and had lived in Washington for 11 years, but had not had a stable address in months, court records show.

Investigators found seven .40-caliber shell casings, two bullets and devices for smoking drugs inside the car, along with a bloodstained knife.
