MSCHF pre-sells living cow that people can buy as burgers or rescue and be given new home

Mschf’s cow ‘angus’ can be eaten, used, or be saved.

MSCHF is pre-selling Angus. He’s a living cow, at least for now, on a farm in upstate New York. In this project, MSCHF puts the power in people’s hands. 404 people can either eat Angus as burgers and buy him as a handbag made of cowhide, or rescue him from being slaughtered and give him a new home. The way it works is that the art collective, which also sells Scout cookies for reselling purposes, has put up Angus as 1,200 burgers in packs of three and four handbags. He’s about two-and-a-half months old at the time of writing, so those who buy him are expected to receive their orders in 2026, the time Angus reaches a typical slaughter age.

Each buyer gets what MSCHF calls physical Angus Tokens with unique codes to identify their pre-order. The buyer has two years to decide whether or not they want to ‘give up’ their pre-order. If they do this, they are not refunded any money but instead give Angus a chance to be rescued and moved to a new home with other cows. In this case, the pool of money is used for the cow’s worry-free retirement living and maintenance. However, if only less than 50 percent of the total pre-orders are given up, meaning the majority of the people want their products, Angus will still face the fate of becoming packs of burgers and handbags.

If 50% give up their pre-orders, MSCHF’s cow angus gets saved

MSCHF has already opened the sale of Angus. As soon as the buyer pre-orders, they receive Angus Tokens, which have tamper-proof seals on them. These covers hide the unique Cow Code, so if the buyer wants to give up their pre-order, they peel them off and see a code. They go on the Remorse Portal, which is the dedicated website for surrendering the orders, and enter the code. MSCHF says this action can only be done once and is permanent. There’s no turning back. They don’t get any refunds because the money they paid is put into Angus’s retirement scheme for his new home, in case he gets saved.

The art collective adds that because there are only four Angus handbags, they have a significantly higher voting share than the burgers do. Each burger pre-order represents a 1 percent stake in Angus, while each bag represents 16.7 percent. A pack of burgers costs 35 USD, while a piece of handbag is priced at 1,200 USD. ‘Fifty percent or more of the total pre-order stake held in Angus must be given up for Angus to be saved,’ says MSCHF. Now, there’s a possibility to bring this percentage higher. That is, if the buyer buys Angus Tokens from other buyers and then gives up their pre-orders. However, this can only happen if those buyers are willing to sell their tokens.

Project where individual actions can make a difference

For MSCHF, Angus the living cow is the middleman who can turn remorse into action. He’s a ‘hyperobject,’ a term used to describe something that may be complex, such as climate change. In the art collective’s project, the focus is on the individuals, the buyers. MSCHF thinks that when people realize how much impact they can have, or when they believe they can’t make a difference, they might feel disillusioned and less likely to take action. In Angus’s case, they can reverse their decisions and make a change.

The living cow represents a vision or hope that individual actions can make a difference. The project suggests that there is a possibility that people can have a meaningful impact on large-scale issues rather than feeling powerless. ‘Angus was destined for slaughter from the moment of his conception. His circumstances are only improved by this project. In this constructed reality, concerned citizens can materially improve an animal’s life,’ says MSCHF.

Chester County 4-H Dairy Show

The Chester County 4-H Dairy Show was held at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County of Route 322 in Honey Brook as part of the 4-H Fair Week on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Fifty dairy animals were exhibited with 34 youth participants. This year, the show was divided by dairy breeds, and Judge Mark Welk did an outstanding job placing the animals and giving the 4-H members constructive feedback.

The day started with our showmanship and fitting contests. In the senior age group of 15 and older, Cody Nolan of Cochranville was Top Showman and Top Fitter. In the intermediate division of youth 12-14 years old, Max Teran of West Chester was the Top Showman and Fitter. In our junior age division of 9-11 year olds, Makayla Smith of Downingtown was the Top Showman and Fitter. In the 1st year members over 15 years old division, congratulations go to Jessica Fatula of Pottstown as Top Showman and Fitter, and in our 1st year members 8-14 years old, top honors go to Josie Hostetter of Oxford.

In the Jersey Breed , Heidi Bramm of Pottstown was the Junior Champion with Pigeon Creek Casino Ivy, and Ellie Harrop of Glenmoore was Reserve Junior Champion. Jacob Pinciotti of Honey Brook was the Senior Champion and Grand Champion with his senior 2-year-old Hillacres Hondo Rosebud, and Max Teran was Reserve Champion and Reserve Senior Champion with his senior 3-year-old cow, PMF Matt Poinsetta.

In the Red and White show, honors go to Sophie Griswold of Chadds Ford with her junior 3-year-old, Preble-Lane Ammo Lilli-Red, who was named Senior Champion and Grand Champion. Emma Dechert of Pottstown was the Reserve Senior Champion and Reserve Grand Champion. Kerri Davis of Christiana was Junior Champion with her winter calf, Towns Edge Rebel, and Baylee Stoltzfus of Cochranville was Reserve Junior Champion with her winter calf, Colt-Steph Rebel-Red Doughnut.

In our Lineback show, Chris Schweitzer of Pottstown was the Grand Champion and also Junior Champion with his fall calf, Pocopson-Meadow Ice Reese. Annsley Frazier was Reserve Grand Champion with her calf Clover, and Hannah Barbosa was the Senior Champion with her Junior 2-year-old, PM Nerve Penelope.

In the Ayrshire Breed , Makayla Smith of Dwningtown was Grand Champion and Senior Champion with her Senior 2-year-old, Dreamnol Reagan Galena, and Bella Smith was Reserve Champion and Reserve Senior Champion with her 4-year-old, Dreamnol Reagan Gabrielle. Makayla Smith's Summer Yearling, Dreamnol Reynolds Baily, was the Junior Champion, Wyatt Nolan's Winter Calf, Dreamnol Reagan Gretchen, was Reserve Junior Champion. Makayla Smith's Dreamnol Reynolds Baily was also the Best Bred and Owned animal of the breed.

In the Brown Swiss breed , honors go to Harleigh Ellingsworth of Cochranville with her Summer Yearling, Lavandula Jukebox Nicoli NP, that was the Grand Champion and the Junior Champion. Jessica Fatula was the Reserve Champion and Reserve Junior Champion with her Spring Calf, Quiet Valley Tanner Sherbert. Ava Kaskela was the Senior Champion with her senior 2-year-old, Udderconfusion SPD Olga NP.

In the Guernsey Breed , Scott Sollenberger was the Grand Champion and Junior Champion with his fall yearling, French Creek Ernie Helen.

In the Holstein Breed , Cody Nolan was the Grand Champion and the Senior Champion with his 5-year-old cow, Kodiak-Creek Bixby Piji. That was also the Best Bred and Owned animal in the Holstein Breed. Melissa Griswold was the Reserve Champion and Reserve Senior Champion with her dry cow. Preble-Lane Cheers Rey. Josie Hostetter was the Junior Champion with her winter calf, MS Hollow-Ridge Ashlyn ET. Reid Umble of Parkseburg was the Reserve Junior Champion with his Spring Calf, Glen Valley Lambda Cadilac. Sophie Griswold's Junior Yearling, Preble-Lane Kingboy Astro, was the best Owned and Bred Junior Holstein.

In the Milking Shorthorn Breed , Cameron Wallace of Coatesville was the Junior Champion and Grand Champion with his Spring Calf, Daring.

The judge selected Jacob Pinciotti's Senior 2-year-old cow, Hillacres Hondo Rosbud, as the Supreme Champion of the show.

The Chester County 4-H Dairy Round-Up was one of the many shows that took place during Chester County 4-H Fair Week, held August 5-10, 2024 at the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County along Route 322 in West Brandywine Township. Studio Silicon Valley leverages the world-class curriculum of Avenues Online while providing an enriching in-person school experience in Silicon Valley for grades 5-12 on our campus at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA.

Core academics will be offered through Avenues Online, which provides an interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum across the humanities, social sciences and STEAM fields taught by an experienced global team of faculty and deans. Since its pilot in 2016, Avenues Online has served more than 700 students in over 40 countries, and students are on their way to a range of outstanding colleges and universities.

Students will have ample time for exceptional in-person coaching and mentoring to dive deeply into passion projects, opportunities to connect and collaborate with fellow students, personalized learning experiences, local community engagement, and individually customized schedules.
