My husband and I have been debating bringing the kids to Universal Studios for a while. I’d never been and my husband had been many years ago.

Since our kids are 4 years old and 1 year old, I had a feeling they might not be able to do most of the rides.

So, when my Mom offered to fly up to watch the boys, my husband and I decided to live it up in Los Angeles for the weekend! And top on our list was a day at Universal Studios in Hollywood !

Find amazing Universal Studios Hollywood deals here .

We spent a lot of time comparing the ticket options. I read a lot of blog posts about what people recommend. Friends gave me their advice.

But, my husband is the one who convinced me to get the VIP Experience .

I’m a movie and TV nut and the Universal Studios VIP tour gives guests a more in-depth studio tour. Plus, guests jump to the front of all the ride lines (even after the VIP tour ends.)

My husband was really stoked about the free breakfast, gourmet lunch, and valet Universal Studios Hollywood parking. And they gave us ponchos and little amenity kits. Oh and all the bottled water we could drink!

Since we only had one day to explore Universal Studios without kids, we decided this was the way to go!

Don’t miss these Universal Studios Hollywood tips

VIP breakfast at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California

Checking In

So when you drive into Universal Studios, head to the Frankenstein Parking Lot. It’s the one closest to the park entrance. Pull into the Valet area and then simply walk up the stairs to get to the park.

After security, head to your right and you’ll see a door marked VIP. That’s where you want to go.

After checking you in, you’ll be sent upstairs to their VIP Lounge . We had about 20 minutes to eat breakfast. They had juices, tea, and coffee. I was also impressed at an assortment of pastries, croissant sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal, etc.

After we ate, our guide Chris came over to talk about our schedule for the day. He also gave us ponchos for Jurassic Park and an amenity kit that had mints, wipes, lip balm etc.

Insider tip: Don’t eat TOO much because the first things you will do are rides!

Universal Studios Hollywood Rides

Hogsmeade at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in California

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The first place we went at Universal Studios Hollywood was to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter . In preparation for this trip, we binge-watched all the Harry Potter movies !

I’m so glad we did because walking through Hogsmeade was incredible! There are so many things to do at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter !

Since we were on a tour, we quickly walked past the amazing shops in Hogsmeade to get closer to Hogwarts. Our guide Chris positioned us in the best place to get photos in front of Hogwarts. Then, we hit the ground running!

FLIGHT OF THE HIPPOGRIFF

First up was Flight of the Hippogriff . It’s touted as a family-friendly roller coaster. The ride is about 21 seconds long. I’m a total chicken when it comes to rides, and it made my stomach a bit wonky. I’m glad I ate a very light breakfast!

HARRY POTTER AND THE FORBIDDEN JOURNEY

Then, we headed straight to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey . The ride line takes you through the inside of Hogwarts, which lives up to the hype!

We watched the paintings of founders of each house talk to each other! I assumed it would look like a projection or video, but it seriously looked like the images in the cracked paintings were moving on their own! So cool!

Once we got through Hogwarts, we handed our bags to Chris. You can’t have anything loose around you.

Trust me: we got kicked off because my husband had a camera around his neck. Thankfully, we were able to get right back on. For those not doing the VIP tour, there are lockers for you to store your stuff.

The ride itself is pretty cool! You sit in line and you get to fly around Hogwarts. I started to feel a bit dizzy about half-way through, so I just closed my eyes on and off.

The ride is a bit longer than I expected, but a must-do ride for Harry Potter fans!

Lower Lot at Universal Studios

Jurassic Park The Ride at Universal Studios California

When they say “Lower Lot” they really mean that you’ll be going down countless escalators to the valley below! I was shocked we were still at Universal Studios!

After doing the previous rides, even the escalators felt a bit intense! But, I’m not really a ride person I guess! I took a time-out from rides in the Lower Lot, but my husband did them all!

JURASSIC PARK—THE RIDE

This is a boat ride that ends in an 84-foot plunge. Our guide Chris helped guests get into their ponchos. I walked all the way to the entrance with the group and then Chris walked me out so I could take photos.

My husband enjoyed the ride and thought the plunge was fantastic! His shorts got pretty wet in the front row (he failed to wear his poncho.) And it made him want to rewatch Jurassic Park and Jurassic World .

REVENGE OF THE MUMMY—THE RIDE

Revenge Of The Mummy—The Ride is just a few yards away from Jurassic Park—The Ride . This time, a few other guests opted to sit the ride out.

We spent the time taking photos of the dinosaur character hanging around. My husband again had a great time because he’d seen The Mummy ! And he told me I definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed it!

TRANSFORMERS: THE RIDE 3-D

I opted to take photos with Bumblebee instead of the ride. I had a blast dancing with Bumblebee! My husband is a huge Transformers fan and he thought the ride lived up to his expectations.

He got to fight alongside his idol Optimus Prime in an epic battle of war.

Waterworld Show

We headed back up the endless stream of escalators to make our way to catch the 12:15pm Waterworld show.

The last time I saw Waterworld , I was in middle school. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was kind of thinking how weird it is when movies become live-action musicals. I was wondering how they’d pull this off.

The Waterworld Show at Universal Studios Hollywood was very exciting!

What’s awesome about this show is that they set the stage with a bit of backstory. So, if you haven’t seen the movie, it doesn’t really matter. The show starts even before everyone is seated. Actors start spraying water at late guests and joking with the crowd.

Then, the show starts with jaw-dropping special effects! There are jet skis, water skiers, motor boats, etc. And lots of fire! You’ll see actors swinging from ropes and little gondolas.

Oh and a plane lands in the water at the end of the show! It was insanely cool! And the actors in the show are also characters in well-known TV shows.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

My 4-year-old is a HUGE Minions fan, so I felt a little guilty going on this ride without him.

We went in a little room to watch a video to set the scene. Then, we headed into our row, put on our 3-D glasses and started the ride.

Our scene was where little Agnes was trying to give a present to Gru to celebrate the anniversary of their adoption. Super cute story, but I did have to close my eyes a few times with all the simulated drops.

Minion Mayhem at Universal Studios Hollywood, California

Insider tip: I heard from other guests that the story changes throughout the day, so it might be worth doing this Universal Studios ride twice.

VIP Lunch in Private Dining Room

Universal Studios Hollywood has a whole restaurant dedicated to serving VIP guests lunch .

It’s a buffet lunch featuring sushi, seafood, meat, salad, soup, and just about every other type of food. Lots of options for kids, vegetarians, carnivores, picky eaters and everyone in between.

Plus, they had an array of desserts! The food was delicious and it was nice to sit outside in the undercover patio and rest a bit.

Insider tip: Use the restrooms here. They are HUGE!

These kids from Despicable Me were a hoot to take photos with at this character meet and greet at Universal Studios Hollywood

During lunch, the character of Lucille Ball was walking around chatting to the guests. She was super fun to talk to and to eavesdrop on while she was talking to other guests!

Apparently, she travels to Lucille Ball’s hometown of Jameston, NY for their annual Lucy Comedy Fest.

Our guide Chris gave us a full hour for lunch, which was plenty of time to leisurely enjoy our meal and use the restroom. And we had extra time to check out the Minions merchandise in a gift shop and take photos with the kids from Despicable Me .

Universal Studios VIP Studio Tour

Ok, so this was the part of Universal Studios I’d been waiting for!

Instead of riding in a huge 4-car tram like the regular studio tour, we got to ride in a private open-air trolley. We teamed up with another VIP group, so I think there were 20 of us in total.

Since our trolley was small, we were able to squeeze through narrow alleys and get a lot closer than the trams. Plus, we were able to load and unload quickly, maximizing our time!

Champions Set

Champions is a new show by Mindy Kaling filmed at Univeral Studios Hollywood

The first place we explored was the set of the upcoming TV Show called Champions . It’s produced by Mindy Kaling and premieres March 8 on NBC!

The set we toured was a boxing gym that seems to be the main set of the show. They had filmed earlier in the day and were going to film later that evening, so we had to be extra careful not to touch anything. It was AMAZING!

I love Mindy Kaling and we knew we’d be watching this show, so it was really exciting to get a sneak peak! The only downside to exploring this set is that we couldn’t take any photos. Or touch anything.

My husband and I used every morsel of self-control to keep from taking a Jolly Rancher from the dish on the counter!

Courthouse from Back to the Future

Courthouse from Back to the Future on VIP Experiene at Universal Studios Hollywood

Next, we got to walk around the courthouse featured in Back to the Future . It was right next to a street used in Hairspray Live !

The clock part was up just for tourists to take photos. I guess it’s such a recognizable set that they usually have to take down the clock if they want to film there.

New York Street

Another cool area we got to walk around was New York Street. It’s also decorated to look like London, Chicago, and countless other cities. The ends of the streets curve so they can connect it to other streets when editing.

As we were walking around, I kept wondering how many times I must have seen this street in TV, movies, and commercials!

Prop Warehouse

Prop Warehouse at Universal Studios in Hollywood, CA

One of the coolest places we stopped on the tour was the prop warehouse. It looks like a thrift store warehouse filled with all kinds of knick-knacks, furniture, and memorabilia.

It would take hundreds of hours to really look at each item and we didn’t have that long. So we did a quick walkthrough and our guide Chris pointed out some cool items.

Prop cart for This is Us at Universal Studios Hollywood

I spent most of the time looking down the narrow aisles seeing what kinds of treasures I could find. I also started reading as many tags as I could.

As we were heading out, I noticed a lady just standing in front of a cart. I was a little annoyed since I maybe wanted to take a photo and she was in my way. After all, I’m a tourist and my job is to take photos of everything!

But, then I realized she was standing in front of a cart marked This is Us and she was pulling items for it! Like most people in their 30s, This is Us is one of my favorite shows!

It brought me back down to realizing this was a working prop warehouse and all this stuff has been used (and will be used) for television and films.

The Good Place and Little Europe Sets

My husband and I are borderline obsessed with Kristen Bell’s show The Good Place . So, when we saw a set filled with yogurt shops, I squealed!

We got to get out and explore the set, which was amazing! Each shop sign was funny and smart! And they had the train station. I could have spent 30 minutes wandering around here taking photos.

VIP Studio tour of The Good Place set at Universal Studios Hollywood

That set is also used to replicate Europe. They just swap out the signs for ones in another language. With all the little alleys and nooks, it has a European feel. The set definitely felt like we were walking through a side street in Paris.

It made me think a lot about our trip to Paris last spring !

King Kong 360 3-D

So by now you know I’m a total ride junkie, right? NOT the case. So, when I was told King Kong 360 3-D was the most intense 3-D ride in the world, I was a bit nervous.

But, I actually kept my eyes open for the whole ride. You are kind of in a tunnel and there are screens on both sides. You’ll see dinosaurs and King Kong and he will move from one screen to the other. You wear 3-D glasses and it’s pretty cool.

Earthquake: The Big One Ride

Our trolley drove into a subway area used in an episode of Bones .

Inside, our trolley shook as we experienced an “Earthquake” and flood situation. It was pretty incredible to see how they did it for the show! We even got a bit wet when the water gushed in.

Had it been a real earthquake, I would have panicked over being sprayed with “subway water,” but this felt pretty clean.

Flood Scene from Big Fat Liar

We drove through the set of a Mexican town and got to see how they simulate rain. We saw the sprinklers, water on rooftops, simulated lightning and a flood!

Afterward, we watched the clip from Big Fat Liar (starring Frankie Muniz and Amanda Bynes) to show the scene that featured the flood.

I was surprised how realistic the rain looked. And I’m a Seattle girl, so I KNOW rain!

Fast & Furious—Supercharged

Another ride is this 3-D experience featuring the cast from Fast & Furious . The video was really incredible because it looked like the actors were outside our trolley.

The ride was mostly us chasing bad guys. The trolley shook a bit, but not too bad. It was cool, even if you aren’t a big Fast & Furious fan.

One of the last rides we experienced was Amity Island on the set of Jaws . The town sits on a man-made lake. We watched a guy get eaten by a shark and then the shark came right up to our trolley and sprayed us with water.

The Bates Motel

I’m not a Psycho fan, but I’ve heard of Norman and The Bates Motel. It’s an actor who is shown putting a body into the trunk of his car and then he notices us. Naturally, he comes toward us with a knife.

Nothing too scary, but very cool to see an actor on this tour.

War of the Worlds Set

Something really cool for my husband was exploring the War of The Worlds set. He’s a Boeing engineer so it was interesting for him to see how they destroyed the Boeing aircraft for the movie.

It was crazy to see all the destruction and we thought the set was eerie.

End of VIP Experience

The simpsons ride.

After the Studio Tour concluded, we headed to The Simpsons land. We were able to get a quick photo with Krusty the Clown before heading into The Simpsons Ride.

Our guide Chris was able to get us into Car 6, which put us right in the middle of the screen. Super helpful since this was a virtual reality roller coaster ride. I used to love The Simpsons , so I did this right.

However, I had my eyes closed during a lot of it.

Photo op with Krusty the Clown in Springfield before The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood

The Walking Dead

This experience uses real actors and they take 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off. I knew The Walking Dead wouldn’t be up my alley. So, I went to the entrance and Chris walked me to the exit.

It’s a super quick walk though experience.

By the time I got to the exit, our group came out about 30 seconds later. Half the people exiting looked freaked out while the other half laughed.

VIP Experience Finale

After The Walking Dead , our Universal Studios VIP Tour was officially over. Chris reminded us that we could still use our passes to go to the front of the line for any other rides until the park closed.

The whole VIP experience lasted more than 6 hours.

Hogsmeade at Night

My husband and I had thought the Hosgmeade looked a bit funky in the bright California sunshine. So, we opted to head back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as the sun was going down.

This gave us the opportunity to get a quick photo with the train conductor.

We loved this photo op with the train conductor of the Hogwarts Express at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood

I always rave about how people should experience Cars Land at Disney California Adventure at night. Hogsmeade takes the cake! It was magical and felt so true to the movies!

We sipped a Butterbeer and just soaked in the ambiance. It was the ultimate way for us to end a whirlwind day at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Final Thoughts on the VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood

In the end, we thought the VIP tour at Universal Studios Hollywood was definitely worth the money.

There’s no way we would have been able to do all the rides we did without that VIP pass. We also would have wasted valuable time looking at maps and trying to figure out where to go.

And the in-depth studio tour lived up to my high expectations! It was exactly the type of Hollywood experience I wanted for our kid-free getaway.

We were also very appreciative of the valet service to pick up our car on the way out. We had our car 2 minutes after leaving the park exit.

Insider tip: Ask for Chris to be your tour guide. He guides all the celebrities around Universal Studios and EVERYONE knows him. You’ll really feel like a VIP!

I am struggling if I go for VIP. They are expensive. After reading your review I think it must be a good choice. I will go with my parents in law who are 85+, first time traveling out from San Francisco, two young kids 7 and 12. Do they have a VIP expert guide only us ? Or do we combine into another family? Does VIP experience including parking that means we don’t need pay extra? Thank you for your in/depth and lively review.

marciecheung

Great question! They keep the tour group pretty small. I think we ended up with 9 people and the maximum is 12 people, I believe. Yes, VIP includes valet parking, so you won't have that additional cost. I'm so glad this post helped! Please reach out with any additional questions. Thanks!

Thursday 12th of April 2018

We're heading to SoCal this July for 6 nights and 5 days. We were thinking of doing a 3 day hopper for Disneyland, 1 day for Knott's Berry, and 1 day at Universal. Oddly and funny enough, we also have a 1 year old and a 4 year old (well, soon to be 5 in a couple of months). But, unlike you, we're bringing them.

If I'm reading the online stuff correctly, under 5 is not allowed for the VIP experience at Universal. Do you know if this is true? If not, would you still recommend a VIP experience for a 5 year old (and the baby)? I know mom and dad would enjoy it :)

Also, does that sound good to you -- 3 days Disney, 1 Knott's, and 1 Universal?

Any other thoughts, comments, feedback, and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, under 5 is unfortunately not allowed for the VIP experience at Universal. That's part of the reason we decided to do it when we were kid-free because it would be 4 years until both kids are old enough. My neighbor took her 5yo daughter and they had a blast! You might look into the Universal Express tickets for your family. It will allow you to jump ahead in line. Summer is a busy season, so that would save you hours and keep spirits high. And indulge in the Butterbeer :) They also have a rider switch option (just like Disneyland) that will be helpful since your 1yo won't be able to go on most of the rides. And Universal is much larger than I anticipated, so I'd suggest doing one area at a time. The upper and lower lots are really far apart.

I think your plan sounds great! Will you have any down days during your trip? Your kids might have sensory overload (and you might be exhausted) and need a day to rest in between the theme parks. It took me a few years to realize how helpful it is to lay low every few days to let the kids refuel.

Have an incredible trip! I have a few posts about Disneyland with babies, toddlers and preschoolers and feel free to ask any other questions you have. I'm here to help!

I have annual passes and I've never thought about buying VIP tickets! Sounds like you had a lot of fun! I should think about it for sure!

VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood

VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood

VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood vca_maps_losangeles

Feel like a film star yourself when you book the VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood . First there’s that valet parking —not bad. Then there’s that private entrance leading you to an exclusive lounge, where you can relax with snacks and refreshments, in your own A-lister’s inner sanctum. Next, you meet your expert guide for the day, who will go out of his or her way to find out what kind of insider tips and film facts you’d like to know more about as you tour the back lot and soundstages. They’re also very helpful when the urge to take a group photo in front of your favourite film set strikes.

Unlike the standard back-lot tour, this tour lets you get out of your group’s private trolley and walk around. You’ll be able to wander around and get up-close looks at sets, learn about lighting and camera angles, and see where current TV shows and films are being shot. Pose for a selfie on the steps of Norman Bates’ house from Psycho , or wander through the Bravermans’ living room from the long-running TV series Parenthood . A popular stop is the massive prop warehouse, which houses an impressive collection of film paraphernalia, from vintage bowling bags to full suits of armour. The tour includes a gourmet lunch prepared by the studio’s executive chef and served in a private dining room, as well as queue-jump privileges for all rides throughout the day, prime seats secured by your guide for all shows, and meet-and-greets with featured performers.

Movie magic, mega attractions—if Hollywood is the land of make-believe, then Universal Studios Hollywood is your chance to step into that fantasy world. On a sprawling site on the eastern side of the Hollywood Hills, this film-studio-meets-theme-park blends a studio tour with rides that swoosh, swoop and dive through film-and-TV-themed worlds.

Step inside the park’s front gates, for instance, and you can choose from the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride, the zombie-filled Walking Dead Attraction or the popular WaterWorld show, which features real-life stunt actors. Head to the right from the box office at the centre, and you’ll soon arrive at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, complete with a re-creation of the village of Hogsmeade. Towards the back of the park, you’ll find the Springfield of Simpsons fame, including an irreverent simulator ride and branches of Moe’s Tavern and Krusty Burger .

Take the escalator to the park’s lower area and you’ll encounter rides based on Revenge of the Mummy and Transformers . The  Jurassic World is now open.

Look out for the digital signs in the park that highlight the current waiting times for all of the rides, as well as the schedule for daily shows. Want to skip most queues? Upgrade to a Universal Express ticket that lets you bypass them, or at least buy your ticket online, which gives you access to the park an hour earlier. To plan your whole day, download the Universal Studios Hollywood Mobile App , which helps you track ride waiting times (and pings you when your favourite ride reaches an ideal queuing time), reminds you about show times, and even takes you back to your car in the car park at the end of the day. Staying the night is easy, too: see the list of preferred hotels located near the park.

Make sure you save time, though, for Universal CityWalk . The park’s adjacent, neon-lit complex offers a wide range of shops and dining options, such as branches of Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs , Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and the first California VooDoo Donuts .

Read on to map out your exploration of the theme park.

The Walking Dead Attraction

The Walking Dead Attraction

Die-hard fans of The Walking Dead —or simply those who love a good scare—can now live through a zombie apocalypse at Universal Studios Hollywood . The theme park’s Walking Dead Attraction was once a seasonal event during the park’s annual Halloween Horror Nights , but it has now received a major upgrade and a permanent year-round location near the park's entrance.

The aim of the attraction is to make the TV show come to life for park visitors, who will have to 'fight for survival' as they navigate through the post-apocalyptic world. To achieve a realistic feel, Universal Studios Hollywood partnered with the show’s creative team, executive producer and director Greg Nicotero, and his special effects company, KNB EFX. They worked to 'make the attraction as 100 per cent authentic as possible,' Nicotero said in a behind-the-scenes video from Universal.

That meant using original moulds from familiar Walking Dead characters (such as 'Bicycle Girl', seen in the pilot episode) and designing sets to replicate some of the show’s most famous scenes. Guests unfamiliar with the series will love the intense, haunted-house-like adventure, while dedicated Walking Dead fans will feel like they’re getting an exclusive tour of the set.

The hungry walkers are a mix of real-life actors in elaborate makeup and animatronic zombies made from moulds and hours of detailed work—down to their flesh-tearing silicone teeth and the broken capillaries in their acrylic eyeballs.

'We’re getting a chance to do animatronic characters that we’ve never done before,' Nicotero said. 'We’re utilising moulds that were created specifically for the show and translating them into parts of the attraction. It’s one-of-a-kind and state-of-the-art.'

The effect is so vivid—and perhaps even shocking—that it’s best for children to skip this attraction: Universal Studios Hollywood does not recommend it for visitors younger than 13.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The idea of 'Hollywood magic' takes many forms at Universal Studios Hollywood , but it seems especially apt in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter . With rides, shops and no shortage of Butterbeer, fans will find themselves transported into the world of the beloved boy wizard.

Even if you don’t know all of the nuances of the bespectacled kid with a lightning-bolt-shaped scar, there is an abundance of whimsy and fun in the six-acre attraction . The village-style setting has, as its focus, the iconic Hogwarts Castle, home to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Inside, underneath its soaring ceilings, you can wander the hallowed halls lined with portraits that—just like in the books and film—talk. Peruse the office of headmaster Albus Dumbledore, look around the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and visit the Gryffindor Common Room, where Harry and his fellow housemates have been known to complain about those sullen Slytherin students.

Ride your own broomstick for thrills that combine robotics, elaborate action sequences and immersive visceral effects.

The signature attraction, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, lets you ride your own broomstick for a set of thrills that combines a robotics system, elaborate filmed action sequences and immersive visceral effects. Outside the castle, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is also home to the first outdoor rollercoaster at Universal Studios Hollywood, the family-friendly 'Flight of the Hippogriff'.

The rest of the attractions focus on the wizarding village of Hogsmeade , with its cobblestone streets, snowcapped roofs and electic locals, from the train conductor welcoming arrivals to the merchants offering various wizarding wares (including wands at Ollivanders, screaming yo-yos at Zonko’s and chocolate frogs at Honeydukes).

Don’t miss the Owl Post, where resident owls hoot as you pass by. Children can learn about the old days, when people actually used to send snail-mail messages to one another (or, in Harry’s case, owl-mail messages). Send a postcard from this location (written with actual pen, or quill, and paper) and it will get a Hogsmeade postmark.

The immersive wizard experience extends well into dining , too. The Three Broomsticks restaurant in Hogsmeade offers hearty English fare such as fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, and bangers and mash, as well as classic desserts like sticky toffee pudding. You’ll be tempted to start your Wizarding World of Harry Potter day right here: the Three Broomsticks does a proper full English breakfast, featuring eggs, sausage, bacon, baked beans and even black pudding. (American staples are available too.)

And here’s good news for Muggles over the age of 21: the adjoining Hog’s Head pub has original draught beers and spirits created exclusively for the attraction, including Dragon Scale, Wizard’s Brew and Firewhisky. At the pub, and all around Hogsmeade, you can also order an all-ages-friendly Butterbeer (think cream soda, with a twist), along with Pumpkin Juice, Pumpkin Fizz and gently flavoured Gilly Water. After all, fending off the Dark Arts works up quite a thirst.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

This colourful section of Universal Studio Hollywood is an instant hit with kids—and anyone else who has a soft spot for the banana-coloured stars of the Despicable Me films. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem is a motion-simulator ride: you sit, buckled into your seat, while the floor lifts and tilts and you seemingly hurtle about inside a 3-D film. The ride lets you into the home of the seemingly villainous (but otherwise hapless) Gru, where you bounce, plunge and plummet through a Minion training mission. And all that excitement ends with a wild dance party. Even waiting to board the ride is entertaining, with multiple screens showing bits of wisdom from Gru and his right-hand Minions Dave, Stuart and Lance.

Keep the Minion theme going by visiting the adjacent Super Silly Fun Land , which brings alive the carnival from the first film with fountains, wet and dry play areas, and the classic-style Silly Swirly Fun Ride, which gives you a full view of all of the high jinks below. Try to win one of the film’s famous stuffed unicorns in a game, or shop for them—along with character dolls and a 'fart-gun' that really smells like bananas—in the Minion Mayhem gift shop.

Studio Tour

Studio Tour

With a behind-the-scenes look at film-making magic, plus blockbuster-themed detours along the way, the world-famous Studio Tour that snakes you through the back lots at Universal Studios Hollywood ranks as a must-do ride in California. Yes, it’s primarily a theme park ride, so you’re probably not going to see Brad Pitt strolling past, but you really do get to see the sets and learn about classics ranging from Frankenstein to Jaws . Then slip on 3D glasses as you drive into wraparound action, especially the technologically advanced Fast & Furious—Supercharged thrill ride—where make believe becomes reality as you’re placed into the action during a high-octane scene. The ground-breaking attraction, presented as the grand finale to the Studio Tour, catapults you into the high-stakes underground world of street racing at perceived speeds of more than 120 miles per hour.

Another detour takes you into a 360-degree, 3D jungle that feels startlingly real, especially when King Kong emerges to battle dinosaurs—with your tram car rocking and rolling in the middle of the brawl. Mellower sections of the tour wind through the real sets of the make-believe towns, cities and suburban neighbourhoods used in hundreds of films and TV shows, as well as the original sets from major films such as Psycho, Jaws and War of the Worlds. Live guides and onboard videos featuring late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon add entertaining insights along the way.

Insider tip: queues can be long here, but don’t worry—the trams depart almost non-stop, so they move fairly quickly.

Universal CityWalk

For a concentrated dose of nightlife, dining and oh-I-want-that shopping, make sure you visit the bustling, pedestrian-only Universal CityWalk complex. Actually, you can’t really miss it—walking routes from Universal Studios Hollywood ’s main car park take you right through CityWalk. Plus, there’s no admission, so you can visit CityWalk even if you don’t have tickets to the theme park. Don’t miss the dancing water-fountain display at its centre, designed by the same people who created the Bellagio's fountains in Las Vegas. And keep an eye out for the camera crews and hosts of the TV show Extra , who regularly film segments around the theme park and CityWalk.

Not surprisingly, films are well represented here: grab one of the plush recliner seats at Universal Cinema , a 18-screen multiplex, or at the IMAX cinema, which projects films seven storeys high. And for thrills of a different kind, experience the sensation of free-falling while skydiving in a vertical wind tunnel at iFLY Hollywood . Free outdoor concerts feature light shows and plenty of room for dancing—though you might have to find someone to hold all the shopping bags you’ll be carrying with stores like Abercrombie & Fitch , Fossil and Billabong lining the squares and avenues.

You won’t go hungry either. Choose from LA icons, such as the branches of Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs , Vivo Italian Kitchen and LudoBird (the Provencale fried chicken created by celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre), or have a craft beer at San Diego-born Karl Strauss Brewing Company . CityWalk is also home to some notable transplants from outside the Golden State too, such as Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville , Dongpo Kitchen (an offshoot of China’s popular Meizhou Dongpo) and the first California branch of Portland’s VooDoo Doughnut .

Springfield

Step into the fantasy world of America’s loudest cartoon dad, Homer Simpson, in this crayon-bright recreation of Springfield, which now fronts the popular The Simpsons ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. Designed to make you feel as if you’ve stepped through your TV into the re-created hometown of the witty Simpsons clan, the outdoor experience gives you the chance to visit Bart's favourite places. Call in at Moe’s Tavern, Lard Lad Donuts or Duff Brewery, all in the shadow of show-inspired landmarks, such Stu’s Disco, where the marquee reads, 'Closed until disco comes back'. Other familiar Springfield restaurants come to life here too, so you can get a 'Genuine Clown-Endorsed Meal' at Krusty Burger or order a cheesy delight at Luigi’s Pizza, all while Homer’s workplace, Mr. Burns’ Nuclear Power Plant, lets loose with a (whoops, did someone push the wrong button?) make-believe meltdown.

The Simpsons Ride

Step into   Universal Studios Hollywood   ’s crayon-bright recreation of the cartoon town of Springfield, then board   The Simpsons Ride   , a simulator ride that celebrates the bizarre animated world of Homer, Bart, Lisa and the other motley characters from   The Simpsons .

Designed to make you feel as if you’ve stepped through your TV into the long-running series, this section of Universal Studios Hollywood invites you to visit many of Homer’s regular haunts—which also make up a good portion of Universal Studios Hollywood’s inside-the-park dining options .

Then board the ride, which takes the experience to another level. Technically, the Simpsons scenes are just projected around you while your car lifts and tilts, but the feeling is all real—as if you are zooming through a psychedelic animated universe. You star in a carnival mid-way through, then rocket through Krustyland, the fantasy amusement park created by creepy-and-cranky Krusty the Clown. With the show’s real actors voicing the characters and offering plenty of subversive humour, the ride effectively captures the unique essence of the show—so if you’re a fan, it’s a must-ride experience.

Live Shows at Universal Studios Hollywood

For all of the movie magic and animation at Universal Studios Hollywood , you can also catch plenty of live shows, which offer their own behind-the-scenes explorations. If you see one of these shows you’ll get a nice reminder that, beyond the theme park rides, this is still a vibrant working studio.

At the Special Effects Show , for instance, you’ll see live demonstrations of how digital and 3-D technology—as well as old-fashioned pyrotechnics—creates vivid illusions for films. Or, watch jet-ski stunts, perilous plunges and a simulated seaplane crash at WaterWorld (the top-rated live show may now be more popular than the 1995 film that inspired it). Children and animal lovers, meanwhile, won’t want to miss the Universal’s Animal Actors show, which highlights the talents and charms of a variety of dogs, cats and birds who have starred in Universal films—including a few of the owls who have winged their way into Harry Potter films.

Download the Universal Studios Hollywood Mobile App to track the times for the various shows during your visit. Or, ask staff about character meet-and-greets around the park, offering the chance to pose for a pic with the Minions, Shrek, the Simpsons and Scooby Doo, among others.

More Rides at Universal Studios Hollywood

What are you in the mood for? Heart-pounding adventure? Light-hearted fun? From warring extraterrestrial robotic life-forms and lurching mummies to the big, lovable Panda named Po, rides at Universal Studios Hollywood transport you to a wide range of film-themed worlds. Get swept up in the jaw-dropping, multi-sensory adventure that is the Dreamworks Theatre featuring the Kung Fu Panda attraction, which uses state-of-the-art visual effects and the first-ever interior projection mapping to place you smack-bang in the middle of the action. On Revenge of the Mummy–The Ride , rocket through impenetrable darkness and fiery pyrotechnics as an eerie, ancient world unfolds in front of you, and get heckled by particularly disgusting (were they actually hissing?) mummies. On Transformers: The Ride-3D , flight simulation technology blasts you into the future to battle for the survival of humanity against towering Decepticons. With Optimus Prime by your side, you might just stand a chance.

But not all of the giants on Universal’s rides are so likely to make your heart skip a beat from the intense adrenaline surge. Little children will love Super Silly Fun Land , inspired by the whimsical seaside theme park in the first Despicable Me film. Let them run around and cool off among the 80 water playground features, ride the old-fashioned (and not too intense) Silly Swirly Fun Ride, or test their water marksmanship at the Super Silly Space Killer arcade game—if only for the chance to win one of the soft-toy unicorns and shout the film’s famous line, 'It’s so fluffy!'

Special Events

From the heart-warming to the heart-stopping, events at Universal Studios Hollywood jazz up seasonal celebrations throughout the year.

The theme park does some serious celebrating in September and October with its Halloween Horror Nights , a scare fest that’s not for the squeamish (nor the little ones—too scary for them!). Follow creepy mazes that bring classic horror films and TV series to life, taking you through gloomy spaces and set re-creations—you never know when werewolves, vampires and zombies might jump out at you. Even the clowns are psychotic, and the whole thing is set to awesome music by guitarist Slash. Be terrorised by Jason, Freddy and Leatherface, and experience The Shining , The Walking Dead and The Purge , to name just a few of the attractions featured. And the 2018 addition? A Halloween Horror Nights maze inspired by the first season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things . Oh, and the signature back lot tram ride? Get ready for an apocalyptic journey with yes, more zombies. (The seasonal festival is so successful that it has inspired the year-round Walking Dead Attraction .)

Winter holidays are another big draw, with Cindy Lou and her Who friends reading the Dr Seuss classic book during Grinchmas . There’s also a nightly tree-lighting ceremony complete with a picturesque evening snowfall—and Hogsmeade will offer holiday-themed foods as well as a yuletide version of the summer light show across Hogwarts Castle . Universal CityWalk marks the Christmas season with concerts, nightly snowfall of its own and a giant tree during CityWalk Holiday Season .

Guide to the Studio Tour 60th Anniversary Celebration at Universal Studios Hollywood

A candy-striped Glamor Tram in front of the Psycho House on the Studio Tour.

Happy 60th Anniversary to the World-Famous Studio Tour! This beloved attraction isn’t just a fan favorite; it kicked off a series of innovations that completely reshaped the themed entertainment industry. To honor this game-changing tram tour, Universal Studio Hollywood has a whole bunch of vintage-inspired fun in store from April 26 to August 11, 2024 .

A (very) quick history lesson: The Studio Tour began in 1964 as Universal Studios’ humble effort to get tourists onto the lot to pay for lunch at the commissary. Guests paid $2.50, hopped aboard a candy-striped “GlamorTram,” and got to peek at film sets, a stunt show, a makeup demonstration and a costume show. In doing so, Universal effectively demystified the movie-making process, as film sets had until then been largely closed off to the public. But beyond that, the Universal Studio Tour birthed a series of innovations that changed entertainment forever. Showcasing practical effects on the Studio Tour led to creating thrill rides based on beloved movies, which led to…well, what Universal Studios Hollywood is today.

Six decades and over 200 million guests later, the Studio Tour basically invented the modern theme park. So how could Universal not throw a party for it? Here’s everything you need to know about the celebrations for the 60 th Anniversary of the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood .

A Special Edition Studio Tour

A tram drives by the Flash Flood on the Universal Studio Tour.

Even if you’ve been on the Studio Tour before, you’ve definitely never experienced what the 60 th Anniversary of the Studio Tour has to offer. Naturally, the biggest Studio Tour celebrations are happening on the attraction itself. The whole tour is getting a makeover for its anniversary, including updated decor, new scripts for the tour guides, and new media content (featuring new celebrity cameos) you’ll watch on the tour.

The trams themselves are getting in on the fun, too: several will be made up to look like old school, candy-striped Glamor Trams, just like those from the 1960s. Plus, new (and oh-so quiet) electric trams will take guests cruising through the past in modern style.

Step Onto an Iconic Movie Set

Guests stepping off the Studio Tour tram for the 60th Anniversary celebration.

The 60th Anniversary Studio Tour is so much more than a makeover. For the first time in decades, guests will get to step off the Studio Tour trams and experience the studio backlot by foot! Once the tram reaches a certain well-known movie set, you’ll get to deboard for some extra special photo ops. Not only will you get an opportunity to get up close and personal with an old-school Glamor Tram, but you’ll get unique photo ops inspired by some of Universal’s most adored blockbusters. Some of those include special, cinematic AR filters, but we’ll keep that as a fun surprise.

And, just a heads up, you are on one of the creepiest sets in movie history. Keep an eye out for a certain someone lurking around the set. He just might be amenable to a selfie — if you’re lucky.

Experience Historic Studio Tour Moments

An archival photo of the Runaway Train attraction from the Studio Tour.

The World-Famous Studio Tour is always a fun history lesson, but this special version will really relish in the legacy of this iconic attraction. Several iterations of the Studio Tour have traversed the studio backlot. That means celebrated experiences have come and gone, including the Parting of the Red Sea, the Ice Tunnel, and so many more. This year’s gussied-up tour will give you a taste of those retired moments: as you pass the location of an erstwhile Studio Tour moment, the tram screens will display what Classic Moment used to be there. For history nerds like me, this is huge.

Even better, though: one of those Classic Moments is returning to the World-Famous Studio Tour for this celebratory event! The Runaway Train , which originally ran from 1974-1985, is back in action for the 60 th Anniversary of the Studio Tour. (An archival photo of the original is shown above.) If you want to see an old-school attraction up and running again, you’ll definitely need to take a spin on the Studio Tour this summer.

A New Look For a Beloved Classic

One beloved Studio Tour moment has a whole new look for 2024. “Earthquake – The Big One” which replicates an 8.3 Richter scale seismic shift inside a 1989 San Francisco BART station, has been revamped as a modern subway stop, complete with electric bikes and sleek white tiles. Don’t worry, “Earthquake – The Big One” hasn’t lost any of the thrills its namesake promises. Complete with a fire, a ceiling crashing in, a gas tank sliding into the station, a flood — all fabricated with practical effects, of course – the 21st century spin on the crowd favorite won’t disappoint.

Celebratory Food and Beverage Offerings

Two blue donuts shaped like 6 and 0, menu items for the Studio Tour 60th Anniversary celebration.

What’s a celebration without party food, right? Throughout the festivities, Universal will have special, retro-inspired eats, drinks and desserts available throughout the park. Here’s what you can expect on the food and beverage front:

Special Edition Popcorn Bucket

The Glamor Tram popcorn bucket celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Studio Tour.

Great news for collectors: for the 60 th Anniversary of the Studio Tour, Universal Studios Hollywood is rolling out one of its more adorable popcorn buckets ever. Classic Universal cartoon character Woody Woodpecker helms the Studio Tour on this delightful snack vessel. Woody might not actually drive the Glamor Tram in real life, but let us dream, OK?

Festive Drinks

The park has two celebratory drinks on tap to honor the 60th. And they are both, in a word, extra — in the very best way. First is the non-alcoholic Lava Lamp , a swirl of Sprite, alcohol-free blue Curaçao, grenadine and sparkling cranberry juice, topped with blue raspberry Pop Rocks.

For the 21+ crowd, there’s the Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend , a vodka hibiscus lemonade; the Shark Bite , a tequila-based drink with tropical vibes and a shark lollipop; the Old Hollywood , with whiskey, a root beer liqueur and cream soda; and the rum-based Kong Tiki which, appropriately, uses banana and other fruit flavors. When I said extra , I meant it.

Celebratory Snacks

Two guests holding pretzels in the shape of "60", menu items for the 60th Anniversary of the Studio Tour.

Guests can enjoy 60th Anniversary snacks on-the-go, too. City Snack Shop , a to-go stand flanking Production Plaza on the Upper Lot, is offering giant pretzels shaped like the number 60, special edition Banana Breath Popcorn (that’s caramel + banana chips), and a whole lineup of commemorative sugar cookies — including one shaped like a candy-striped Glamor Tram. Just don’t forget to Instagram it before you take a bite!

Nostalgic Meals

Three friends enjoying retro burgers and shakes as part of the 60th Anniversary of the Studio Tour.

You’ll find the bulk of the Studio Tour 60th Anniversary offerings at Hollywood & Dine and Mel’s , two eateries located on the Upper Lot. Hollywood & Dine will boast a drool-worthy slate of sandwiches — smoked brisket, BBQ cheeseburger, BBQ pulled pork, and BBQ grilled chicken — all on adorable Woody Woodpecker buns. Over at Mel’s, guests will nosh on fried chicken and meatloaf served on throwback combo trays. It’s just so charmingly ‘60s, isn’t it?

Delightful Desserts

Two Chilly Willy snowballs, part of the 60th Anniversary of the Studio Tour celebration.

If you’re a can’t-skip-dessert person like me, you’ll be particularly amped for the Studio Tour 60th anniversary. Over at Hollywood & Dine, guests can dig into sweets inspired by Woody Woodpecker’s pal Chilly Willy: the Chilly Willy Funnel Cake, and the Chilly Willy snowball. Film Reel Cookie Sandwich, which is a sugar cookie with cream filling shaped, yes, like a film reel. Lights! Camera! Dig in!

Down on the Lower Lot, Studio Scoop has whipped up some throwback treats for the festivities, too. You might need a buddy to dig into Kong’s Ice Cream Sundae, a gigantic banana split topped with strawberry, chocolate, waffle cone chunks, candy bananas, whipped cream, banana chips and a 60th Anniversary cookie. If you don’t have a Kong-sized appetite, try the Glam Tram Cone: vanilla soft serve with a strawberry flavor swirl, also topped with a 60th Anniversary cookie.

And don’t miss out on the big daddy of ‘em all: the 60th Donut. It’s technically two donuts covered in blue icing and candy pearls, because we’re just that serious about celebrating.

PRO TIP: In-between sundaes and donuts, keep your eyes peeled for blue signs reading HERE BACK THEN all throughout the theme park. When you scan the QR code, you’ll get a look at the retired attractions or shows that used to stand in that same spot.

Limited-Edition Throwback Merch

Three guests wearing Studio Tour 60th Anniversary merchandise.

The Studio Tour 60th aesthetic is looking cute . Inspired by the red and white stripes on the original Glamor Trams, these shirts, jackets, hats, mugs, cups and so much more will be available at Universal Studio Store at CityWalk , Universal Studio Store (inside the theme park) and Production Central (also inside the theme park) all celebration long. Because we all want a piece of history all to ourselves, right?

That’s what’s on the docket for the Studio Tour 60th Anniversary celebration at Universal Studios Hollywood! What’s your favorite part of the backlot tour? Let us know in the comments below.

Must be 21 years and older with valid identification to purchase or drink alcoholic beverages.

The Studio Tour has always been mine and my husbands favorite ride! It’s so much fun, with so must nostalgia and love for the movies. I absolutely love the back lot tour, the king kong ride, the jaws drive-through, the old Western flooding sequence, and the war of the worlds set. The fact that you can get on with food and drinks too is such a great bonus! I hope they repurpose the fast and furious section (due to making it a ride in the park) into something else. I also which there was more to the “Nope” attraction. Overall – it’s always a highlight of our days in the park and a must-see ride everytime we’re there.

We love to hear about how much you enjoy The World-Famous Studio Tour, Elise! Can’t wait to see you again!

We’ve been to Universal Hollywood before, but I never went on the Studio Tour that time (I was in a different section of the park while the rest of my family went on it). I hope to check it out for the 1st time when we go there again in June. Of course I also hope the “Fast & Furious” section of the tour becomes something different by then.

Not to mention I’ll most likely buy one of the limited merchandise, considering that I’m a fan of Woody Woodpecker.

Awe we will be there April 25th and miss it by a day. Is there a chance the current studio tour will be closed at all in preparation for this event?

Does the special 60th tour come with the tram lot tour or is this an extra price?

Hi Jamie! The 60th Anniversary celebration is included with valid theme park admission.

Universal Studios is our, husband and my, favorite amusement park! We often have annual tickets. We always go on the tram tour. Each time it’s different. Each time it’s awesome. The most fun is bringing others along to enjoy what we love. Sharing is caring. I’m not going to miss this event. See you soon!

We can’t wait to see you!

That’s excellent as coming from Australia and when I got my tickets was yet to be announced. Something to look forward to that’s for sure. See you guys there from the 3rd of May. Will be my 8th visit.

We can’t wait to see you there, Brett!
