The Best San Francisco Tours

Whether by air, by bike, by boat, by bus or even by vintage Volkswagen, there are so many different ways to take in the beauty of San Francisco and experience its top attractions . To help you decide which method is right for you, U.S. News compiled the city's top tours, considering traveler sentiment and expert opinion. Foodies, history buffs, adventurers and everyone in between will find a tour on this list.

Editor's Pick: Dylan's Tours – Dylan's Famous Tour with Muir Woods

Price: Adults from $99; kids from $79 Duration: 5 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Lili Weigert , an arts and travel writer based in Marin County, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Dylan’s Famous Tour With Muir Woods was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

This half-day minibus excursion takes you from Fisherman's Wharf to Muir Woods and back, and includes a lively tour of some of San Francisco's most iconic neighborhoods and landmarks. Throughout the ride, our guide – a passionate San Francisco native – shared fun and surprising facts and pointed out interesting sights as we wound through North Beach , Pacific Heights, Chinatown and Alamo Square. After a dramatic photo-op at Fort Point (the waves can make a big spray!), we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and drove to Muir Woods, where we spent almost 90 minutes strolling through the trees. After a lunch break in the town of Sausalito, we headed back over the bridge, making a quick stop to admire the Palace of Fine Arts before ending back at Fisherman's Wharf.

Tours operate daily at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Know that if you choose the 8 or 10 a.m. departure, you'll have a slightly higher fee because of the extra stop in Sausalito (the 8 a.m. tour) or the Ferry Building Marketplace (the 10 a.m. tour). Dylan's Tours offers a variety of minibus tours, including a foodie tour and a daylong Sonoma and Napa wine tour.

Dylan's Tour San Francisco

Lili Weigert

Why we love it:

  • Our guide kept us entertained with fascinating historical anecdotes about the Bay Area; he even used visual aids and played music to bring the stories to life.
  • In Muir Woods, our guide explained the different paths we could explore, then left us on our own so everyone could go at their own pace and as far as they wanted.
  • The organization and timing of the entire tour was flawless – there were plenty of stops for photo-ops and our guide was very clear and respectful of everyone's questions and needs. He even had water and energy bars for us.
  • Sausalito is a lovely spot for lunch and there’s enough time for a snack and stroll through town or a waterfront meal at The Spinnaker – just ask for your check when you order!

If you’ve never seen an old-growth redwood forest, prepare for a full sensory experience.

An unforgettable Muir Woods guided tour…

Our redwood tours from San Francisco are just a quick 30 minutes from downtown, so before long you’ll see the trees of Muir Woods that are between 800 and 1,200 years old. You’ll take a full hour and a half to roam through this ‘living museum’ where you can walk among the towering trees that used to dominate the west coast from Santa Barbara to Washington.

After exploring Muir Woods, you’ll have a narrated tour through the beautiful seaside Mediterranean-style town of Sausalito, after which you’ll get a chance to explore the 2.5-mile waterfront (approx 45 minutes total) before returning to the city across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Have a full day to fill? You can also choose to skip the ride back in the mini-shuttle and opt for a picturesque ferry ride back to San Francisco!

Catch the ferry back to San Francisco at the end of your Muir Woods private tour

Taking one of our Sausalito tours means you can explore for longer and take the ferry across the Bay! For only $14 extra, explore this beautiful town at your leisure and take the scenic ride to Fisherman’s Wharf or the San Francisco Ferry Building.

From there, enjoy some more sightseeing and easily reach your hotel via cable car or public transportation. The ferry from Sausalito departs at various times depending on the season.

Why We Love This Tour

“This half-day tour is a great way to spend some time in nature among the ancient redwoods of coastal California, while still being so close to San Francisco. The redwood forest is an amazing site, and there’s plenty of time to stroll around the ancient groves. Grabbing a coffee or pastry in the coastal community of Sausalito is the perfect addition to this trip before you head back to the city.”

Muir Woods Trip Itinerary

*These are sample itineraries for tours of Muir Woods and Sausalito. Please note that due to conditions outside of our control, your itinerary may be altered to best suit the groups’ needs.

While we guarantee that we’ll do our best to provide you with all of our Muir Woods and Sausalito tour highlights (conditions permitting), we do not guarantee them in this specific order.

Depending on passenger numbers and guest needs, your tour may be moved to a larger vehicle or operated by a preferred partner company. In this case, there may be slight differences in the itinerary and times. We will communicate the exact details to you in your confirmation.

Please be advised that during your tour with us, it is possible that your group may be joined by guests from one of our other tours for the return journey to San Francisco. While we strive to provide dedicated transportation for each tour group, occasionally circumstances may require us to combine groups for logistical reasons. Rest assured, we prioritize your comfort and safety throughout the entirety of your experience with us. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

7:15am & 1:30pm:

Our Muir Woods and Sausalito tour begins as you make your way to the pre-arranged pick-up spot at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (333 O’Farrell St).

Make sure to be on the Mason Street side of the hotel to meet your Incredible Adventures guide and vehicle.

Cross the Bridge:

From the cozy vantage of the mini-coach, take in panoramic scenes that span the city skyline, Alcatraz Island, and the boat-speckled bay.

We’ll next make a very brief stop in Sausalito, possibly picking up more guests from our other tours, before continuing our journey. Then, we’ll take the winding coastal mountain path through the Marin Headlands where you’ll see the base of Mt. Tamalpais (the highest point in the North Bay region) before we arrive in the cool, shaded canyon home to these special coastal redwoods.

See the Trees:

Are you ready to feel small beside a redwood? You’ll step off the mini-coach into a wonderland of greenery. On our redwood tours from San Francisco, you’ll have an hour to 90 minutes to wander along the wooden boardwalks through the tallest species of tree in the world.

Due to the thick fog that blankets the west coast in the summer, redwoods only thrive in Northern California and Oregon. In 1908, Senator William Kent and his wife donated their land to the state and President Theodore Roosevelt designated it as a federally protected area.

Muir Woods is the only surviving stand of old-growth forest in the Bay Area. Wandering amongst these towering giants is sure to reconnect you with a natural world that was almost lost forever.

Free Time in Sausalito:

From Muir Woods, it’s a short drive to Sausalito, a picturesque town that starts with hilltop mansions and spills down to boutique shops and cafes along the waterfront.

The pier offers a panoramic view of the San Francisco skyline, the Bay Bridge, and Angel Island. Take it all in on our Sausalito tours with an in-coach narrated tour and 45 minutes to explore. Then, loop around for the return trip to San Francisco.

You can also choose to hop off the coach and linger at one of the sidewalk cafes, shop for one-of-a-kind souvenirs, or sample freshly caught seafood before taking the ferry back to the city on our Sausalito tours. Just choose the PLUS FERRY option at checkout.

Home Again:

We’ll drop you back off at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square just in time for lunch or dinner, depending on the tour you’ve chosen.

Taking the Ferry

Take the ferry back to san francisco* and spend more time exploring sausalito at your own pace.

Sausalito is located to the north of the Golden Gate Bridge and began as a hub for car, ferry, and rail traffic to reach the city. After World War II, its industry focus shifted, transforming it into a wealthy and artistic residential and tourist area.

You can add the ferry tickets to your tour, and the driver will drop you off before heading back to the city. Simply choose the PLUS FERRY tour option during the check-out process, and the tickets will be provided to you on the tour.

Taking the ferry back from Sausalito will afford you amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco city skyline from the north. Don’t forget your jacket, though – it can get chilly out on the bay!

You’ll disembark the ferry in the Fisherman’s Wharf/Embarcadero area where you can easily hail a cab or take the cable car back to your hotel.

* Tickets are an additional $14 for all ages and are not included in the base tour price. Ferry return is subject to availability.

Tips for Booking a Private Tour in San Francisco

bridge covered in fog

  • BE CLEAR ON WHAT IS INCLUDED AND WHAT IS NOT

It’s important to know what isn’t included in a tour before you book, or you may be shocked by the extra costs like meals, wine tasting fees, and park entrance passes.

These extra costs add up quickly and need to be considered in the cost of booking a tour.

The tour usually does not include gratuity for the guide, driver, restaurant servers, and tasting room staff which should be factored into what you will spend.

Make sure to check if they’re picking you up from your hotel in San Francisco so you can plan accordingly.

It’s equally important to know what’s included so that you dress appropriately and show up prepared for any physical requirements like riding a bike for six miles.

  • CHECK THE WEATHER

If you are going to book a special tour for your trip to San Francisco, check the weather first.

There is no point in taking a tour to see the Golden Gate Bridge if you won’t be able to see it because it is socked in with fog .

The same applies to riding in an open-top vehicle on a rainy day.

As most people like to book in advance, you can also look at the seasonal weather for the time of year you plan to visit to determine the chance of getting good weather.

  • Summer – Foggy Season, and it can be chilly.
  • Fall – Dry and sunny to start, followed by colder days and rain
  • Winter – On and off rain and cold weather
  • Spring – Less rain and the days begin to warm up
  • DRESS APPROPRIATELY

san francisco tours with hotel pickup

If you come to San Francisco expecting lots of California sunshine, you may be very surprised by how cold it is.

Summers can be shockingly cold as the fog blows off the ocean with its cold breezes.

Make sure you dress in layers and are prepared for your tour of the city or a visit to the wine country .

This is especially important if your itinerary includes bike riding or crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

Many tours offer open-top vehicles that make it easier to see the sights but also leave you exposed to the elements.

If you are cold and unprepared for the weather on your tour, it’s your fault, and the companies will not refund the cost if you return to your hotel to warm up.

  • DON’T FORGET TO TIP YOUR DRIVER

The cost of the tour does not include a tip for the driver or guide.

These individuals are usually employed by the tour company and rely on the tips they make from travelers to make a decent living.

They pour their hearts into learning everything they can about the destinations to make the tour interesting and work hard to keep you safe simultaneously.

Although cash is used less than ever, ensure you have some on hand to tip at the end of the tour if they do a good job.

A tip of about $10 to $15 is appropriate in most cases unless the tour is an all-day trip, and you should increase this by double.

  • BOOK MULTIPLE TOURS

Most tours only visit a section of the city, so you will still have so much more to see.

Booking multiple tours is not only a great way to experience more of San Francisco, but it will also maximize your stay if your trip is short.

You could book a 2-Hour Private Jeep Tour of San Francisco , then follow it up with a San Francisco Private Food Walking Tour in the Mission District the next day.

If you are on a budget, you can book a Private Walking Tour of San Francisco and then take a Private Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito Bike Tour for less money than many individual tours.

FAQs on Private Tours of San Francisco

What is the best way to tour san francisco.

Touring in one of these vehicles provides the opportunity to zip around the city and see more sights quickly.

How many days do you need to tour San Francisco?

As one California native and frequent travelers to the state, we’ve got all expert and local details about small group tours in San Francisco.

While big bus tours can be convenient and cheap, small group tours are definitely the way to go in San Francisco to access more parts of the city and have a better, more personalized experience.

➡️ Our Top Pick : While many San Francisco tours offer similar itineraries, our top pick for a knowledgeable & friendly guide is the SF Expeditions small group tour with Paul (it’s more like exploring the city with a friend).

🌁 Overview: Best San Francisco Small Group Tours

Our most recent trip to Northern California took us to San Francisco and allowed us to personally take a few small group tours around the city.

👉 Because of our local knowledge and personal experiences, we can share which small group tours are the best for specific interests in San Francisco and why tourists should avoid those big bus tours in this Bay city.

San Francisco can be a walkable city in certain areas and when its not, it has some great public transportation options.

⭐️ 7 Best Small Group Tours In San Francisco

San Francisco gets a lot of negative talk about the city and its safety, but after visiting big cities all over the world, we don’t think San Francisco is that bad at all.

It’s best to always be cautious & aware (especially with transportation ), but San Francisco is a really cool place to visit, and small group tours are a great way to get to know this city .

📍 Pickup Location: Fisherman’s Wharf ⭐️ 5.0 Star Reviews 🤑 Price: $100-130 🚐 Max Number Of People: 6

Paul’s almost private SF Expeditions small group tour was the best tour we went on in San Francisco because of his extensive knowledge of the city and his kind, friend-like attitude on the tour.

2. San Francisco Love Tours

One of the most unique small group tours in San Francisco is the Love Tour not because of where you go but what you go in.

📍 Pickup Location: Fisherman’s Wharf ⭐️ 5.0 Star Reviews 🤑 Price: $85 🚐 Max Number Of People: 7

The San Francisco Love Tour is most unique not for the places it visits, but the way they’re visited . Since the Summer of Love & hippie “revolution” started in San Francisco, riding in a painted 70s-era VW and listening to 60s-70s music is a fun way to explore the city.

  • Battery East (Golden Gate Viewpoint)
  • Walt Disney Museum

  • van is decorated but tour guides aren’t dressed in hippie wear

*️⃣ Tips: Sit next to a window that opens or in the front for the best views & pictures, tell the tour guide what you want to see (but remind them; ours forgot), early tours may be better (our late afternoon guide was exhausted and forgetful).

3. Best Bay Area Tours Yosemite & Giant Sequoias Day Trip

📍 Pickup Location: Fisherman’s Wharf/Lombard Street/Union Square/SOMA ⭐️ 5.0 Star Reviews 🤑 Price: $210-230 🚐 Max Number Of People: 15

Although it deserves more time, for those that don’t have it & just want a peek, a day trip to Yosemite is a great nature tour to take from San Francisco. It’s a little bigger than some of the other small group tours, but it’s a great way to experience it from San Francisco .

➡️ Check Availability For The Best Bay Area Yosemite Tour

  • get out in nature and go on a hike

4. GoCar San Francisco Tour

If you don't want to go on a scheduled guided tour, you can take a GoCar and visit the sites on your own.

📍 Pickup Location: Fisherman’s Wharf ⭐️ 4.5 Star Reviews 🤑 Price: $97-312 🚐 Max Number Of People: 2

For those that don’t want to follow a group or be on a strict schedule, one of the best tours (that’s very small) is the San Francisco GoCar Tour . It’s a talking car with GPS that takes 2 around to major sights of the city (or lets you go off on your own).

➡️ Check Availability For The GoCar San Francisco Tour

  • go at your own pace
  • follow along with a talking car & guided GPS
  • don’t have to follow the map guide
  • lockable trunk for things
  • completely private for 2 people
  • offered in multiple languages
  • multiple tour length options
  • must wear a helmet
  • have to drive the crowded & steep streets of San Francisco
  • low to the ground
  • large refundable security deposit required
  • driver must be at least 21
  • additional collision damage waiver fee not included
  • a lot of cars we saw looked beat up

5. San Francisco Tour Company Luxury Van

San Francisco is a wonderful city to visit as long as you take normal precautions like you would in any large city.

The San Francisco Tour Company offers a similar city tour (about 4 hours) & it’s one of the most intimate small group tours with a maximum of 5 passengers.

  • luxury tour
  • max 5 passengers
  • most attractions seen from inside the car
  • only get out of the car a couple of times

*️⃣ Tip: San Francisco is known for its steep streets so certain parts aren’t very walkable, but Fisherman’s Wharf ( one of the best areas to stay ) is very flat & easy to walk around.

6. Dylan’s Tours (San Francisco, Muir Woods, Sausalito)

A lot of tours in San Francisco will add on an Alcatraz option which will not be a small group but will likely be cheaper than a ticket sold separately.

📍 Pickup Location: Fisherman’s Wharf ⭐️ 5.0 Star Reviews 🤑 Price: $129-189 🚐 Max Number Of People: 15

Dylan’s Tour of San Francisco is one of the longest small group tours available because it not only includes sights of the city, but also Muir Woods, Sausalito, and an optional Alcatraz add on (but we suggest doing the Alcatraz Night Tour ).

  • Muir Woods National Monument
  • Palace of Fine Arts Theatre
  • Pacific Heights

➡️ Check Availability For Dylan’s Tour of San Francisco

  • more area is covered on this tour
  • more of a medium sized group
  • extra fees not included
  • short length of time touring the city
  • weather can effect Muir Woods admittance
  • no need to combine the Alcatraz tour because it’s technically on your own anyway

*️⃣ Tip: After exploring San Francisco, check out other amazing nearby destinations like Monterey , Santa Cruz , Pebble Beach , & Big Sur .

7. Extranomical Tours (Muir Woods & Wine Country)

The Muir Woods is one of the most popular nature destinations near San Francisco and you can visit it and wine country on the Extranomical Tour.

📍 Pickup Location: Union Square & Fisherman’s Wharf ⭐️ 4.5 Star Reviews 🤑 Price: $179-259 🚐 Max Number Of People: 14

For those that have already seen the city sights in San Francisco , get out north of the city and find small group tours to the Muir Woods & Wine Country . At Muir Woods, check out some of these hiking trails if there’s time.

➡️ Check Availability For The Muir Woods & Wine Country Tour

  • see redwoods
  • visit three wineries
  • (select) hotel pickup
  • visit locations north of the city without having to drive
  • complaints of bus conditions
  • more of a medium sized tour
  • weather can effect admittance to Muir Woods
  • complaints of time feeling rushed

You can visit San Francisco sites on your own but one of the easiest ways is to take small group tours around the city.

*️⃣ Tip: Having at least 3 full days in San Francisco would be the perfect length of time to the tour the city, explore individual areas, and venture out to places around the city.

🚫 Why You Shouldn’t Use Big Bus Tours In SF

Big Bus tours can be extremely cheap and easy when traveling, but they’re not the best option in San Francisco because of the layout of the city . Streets are steep and sometimes difficult to navigate so those big busses can’t always go where cars can.

For example, busses can drive past Lombard Street, but they can’t drive down the crooked street the way small San Francisco group tours can.

🔁 Wrap Up: Best Small Group Tours In San Francisco

Since San Francisco streets are steep, sometimes narrow, and a bit confusing (with cable cars & trolleys), driving or taking big bus tours aren’t the best, while small group tours are less stressful, more intimate, more personal, and allow access to more places that big busses can’t fit. We highly recommend Paul’s SF Expeditions tour , but any of these are great options to explore the Bay Area.

Description, experience yosemite one day tour from san francisco.

Join us on this breathtaking tour of Yosemite National Park , whose towering granite peaks, cascading waterfalls and nature trails are perhaps the most stunning in the world. This award-winning tour spends the most time in Yosemite and includes a unique hike among ancient Giant Sequoias .

Your guided tour begins with a convenient hotel pick up in San Francisco. Sit back and enjoy the scenery as your guide explains how glitter in the American River sparked the California gold rush; what geological forces made Yosemite’s dramatic landscapes; and the role John Muir played in the formation of America’s first protected wilderness.

Be Blown Away by Awe-Inspiring Valley Views

After entering Yosemite National Park, we’ll make our way to a scene made famous by photographer Ansel Adams. Take a moment at Tunnel View. Capture yourself with El Capitan , Half Dome , Sentinel Dome, Glacier Point, and Cathedral Peak as your background.

Once you’ve had your fill of photographs from this perch overlooking the valley, the tour will arrange a memorable stop where you can get eye to eye with wispy Bridalveil Fall .

Have Your Own Yosemite Valley Adventure

After arriving to our stop in Yosemite Valley , you will have 2 hours for lunch and exploring on your own. The free time options include hiking to Yosemite Falls , meandering through Sentinel Meadow, checking out the Ansel Adams Gallery and more.

Take a Moment with More Iconic Monuments

Your Yosemite experience stops next at El Capitan Meadow to learn more about the world’s largest granite monolith and its climbing culture. As we are leaving Yosemite Valley, we will make our final stop at Valley View which serves up a panoramic landscape framing the Merced River, El Capitan and the imposing spires of Cathedral Rocks.

Feel the Quiet Grandeur of Giant Sequoias

The highlight of our tour is still ahead of you as we head to the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. In this beautiful grove, you’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with some of the largest and oldest trees on earth.

When the Tuolumne Grove trail is snow-covered or unsafe (November-March), we always spend extra time in Yosemite Valley.

By the end of the day, you’ll have experienced some of the most incredible landscapes in the world and captured memories to last a lifetime. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore Yosemite National Park with us.

What Our Guests Are Saying About Us

Amazing views and a smooth tour arrangement.

This tour was great! I can warmly recommend taking it on a weekday to avoid park-visiting crowds. The hotel pickup was smooth and the trip to and from the park was narrated with interesting info at a reasonable frequency. Thanks to it being a Tuesday we had very little traffic, which contributed to a very smooth trip.

The stops for bathroom breaks and snack opportunities were well planned, I appreciate that they stopped at outdoor shopping centers with a grocery store and a selection of not-too-pricey eateries (although we opted to bring our own cooler bag with meals and snacks). Stops for photo ops were sufficiently long to take in the scenery - the views are absolutely breathtaking on a clear day. We had a great driver (Ken) and guide (Randall) who both did a fantastic job, particularly with kind and clear reminders for participants to be back on time.

It's a great tour!

We had a female tour guide who was also our bus driver. I don't remember the name but she is excellent at her job. Entire tour she shared enough information related to the history of the place etc. It made the tour all the more engaging and entertaining. We had a female tour guide who was also our bus driver. Entire tour she shared enough information related to the history of the place etc. It made the tour all the more engaging and entertaining. If you choose Extranomical Yosemite Tour, ask for this tour guide and no other. You will get more bang for the buck. Yosemite is magical and one day tour isn't enough. But if you are short of time and get the most from your day, choose this tour. Few things to keep in mind. Keep your water bottles and food with you. Go on weekdays for better all round experience. If you want to travel solo and website doesn't seem to allow solo booking, contact their customer support and convince them.

It was a good tour, especially if you do not have so much time

Our guide was super nice and friendly. And Yosemite is a beautiful place for nice memories. Tip: Bring some food or buy on the way. I do recommend it!

This solo trip was booked as a special trip for my birthday

Communication from the team in the office was great! The park was sublime and our guides showed us all the best spots. The tour was well paced and set out and my guide on the 2nd day was far superior. Excellent jokes, knowledge and attention to detail. I'd recommend this trip wholeheartedly.

Beautiful day at Yosemite with Rob!

Rob, our tour guide and driver, took us to the best spots at Yosemite today! He drove safely, was very nice and had great humor. He was accommodating and even took us to viewpoints not included in the itinerary, which presented awesome photo opportunities. We really enjoyed our trip to Yosemite Valley and the giant sequoias grove.

Everything went smoothly and on time. We were picked up very close to our hotel, which was very convenient, as we left nice and early. Our guide, Brad, was great, very kind, giving us lots of interesting info. The valley itself is just breathtaking, majestic beauty.

Luisa Campos, TrustPilot

El Gran Capitán, the Half Dome, all the gorgeous Falls, the meadows, the river and the forests were just beautiful. And the giant sequoias are amazing. All in all, a great unforgettable experience.

Yosemite is a magical place

Yosemite is a magical place that would best be experienced over a few days staying in the valley. However, if you have one day, then this tour is the one. It's an early start and a lot of driving, but the things you'll see and feel will stay with you. Our driver Rob was a one man show, his love of Yosemite and his knowledge about the park shine through from the minute he picks you up.

Annie Middleby, TrustPilot

Rob is an everyday guy who uses comedy and lived experiences to make this a truly memorable tour. He's also driving the bus. The stop off for groceries to keep the day running smoothly is also an efficient part of the tour. I met some fantastic people, walked miles, saw world class scenery of mountains, forests, water falls and wildlife Rob was the icing on the cake. An unexpected diamond in the rough. He makes an exhausting 17 hour day worthwhile. Well done Rob and Extranomical.

Well planned tour!

The schedule is well planned, with lots of fantastic and amazing view. The tour guide provided adequate time for us to take photos at specific destinations. It was not rush at all. The tour guide, Gino Zernitskiy is funny and passionate, his uplifting altitude really brings us to immerse and enjoy the nature with our whole heart.

Enthusiastic Day!

Our tour guide David was enthusiastic, funny and very friendly. He was always willing to help and get us to the right spots for photo ops. When in Yosemite, you’re in awe of its beauty so there is no wrong spot but we definitely appreciated his knowledge of Yosemite.

Perfect Day

I had a brilliant day-trip to Yosemite National Park from San Francisco! Tony was our bus driver and tour guide, and he did an excellent job! He was very knowledgeable regarding the Park, and he took us to all the best places for photos. We were also given several hours to explore the Park on our own. Thank you!

Informative guide!

The guide had lots of information to share on the drive from San Francisco to Yosemite. So, there was plenty to learn about the various places we drove through. The day was well paced and we got to see some spectacular sights.

Very informative guide!

Gino was very informative and detailed in his explanation about the area so I feel like I learned a lot during the trip. He will make sure we pay attention to the main attraction that he was explaining about and some times he told us very hilarious and quirky jokes. Very fun trip I shall say!

ichbinmelle, TripAdvisor

I can't even begin to describe my feelings as I arrived in this heaven. Gino was our tour guide, very fun, very informative and very strict about time which helped us cover every single hot spot of what Yosemite could offer, every single of it. Gino was very informative and detailed in his explanation about the area so I feel like I learned a lot during the trip. He will make sure we pay attention to the main attraction that he was explaining about and some times he told us very hilarious and quirky jokes. Very fun trip I shall say! We first went to Tunnel View oh my god I was in awe. We even dropped by Bridalveil Fall, longer stop was at Yosemite Waterfall around 2 hrs and it was amazing and more than enough for me to take all the photos I needed and to bask in the Yosemite sunshine, soaking in its breeze. Make sure to have a good lunch here because after that you'll head to see Sequoias. And next, we even got to see El Capitan up close!! It was surreal oh god. Then after, we head to hike to see Sequoia. For me, the time allocated for hike in Sequoias which was just around 1hr 20mins should be stretched to maybe 1hr 30mins instead. The hike downhill was fairly okay but I gotta advise you to really sprint until you see the Sequoias since you will want to buy as much time as you can to hike back up to the tour bus. Please go see it, it's really worth it! The place was magical and felt like as if fairies live there lol I'm not even exaggerating. And also stick to your group tour mates for solo travelers as it helps so that you won't get left behind and they can help you take photos too! (Thank you to all my group tour mates for the wonderful photos and wonderful time!!).

Smooth trip!

An amazing tour with amazing tour guide Andy! The day was long, but went by smoothly with plenty of stops on the way, lots of information, and an animated and lively tour guide. I absolutely salute the organization of the day and how all activities and stops were kept running smoothly with clear and accessible information

An amazing tour with amazing tour guide Andy! The day was long, but went by smoothly with plenty of stops on the way, lots of information, and an animated and lively tour guide. I absolutely salute the organization of the day and how all activities and stops were kept running smoothly with clear and accessible information. The Yosemite park was stunning, I mean, with clear blue skies through the day, it was seriously hard to take a bad picture. The sequoia forest was impressive and I think lots opted to keep their energy for that hike which was indeed quite arduous coming back from due to the steep inclination (there were 2 offered during the day, a 2 hours one walking on flat terrain at the park, and the one required to go see the sequoias, both optional and much opportunities to enjoy the fresh air of the forests if not taking them); our guide was very diligent and ensured both hikes were well-described in terms of perks and difficulties and I think all had a great time. All in all plenty of time to explore, plenty of time to browse gift shops, plenty of time to exercise and follow the group into the more active parts of the day, and just enough resting time between activities. I also really appreciated that the 2 food stops of the day included the option of a grocery store, alongside interesting restaurants, and the park’s cafe.

We joined the Yosemite 1-day tour and it was just a wonderful experience. Especially the guide Gino was awesome with great experience and knowledge around the park to make flexible planning to make the day the best for everyone!

Especially the guide Gino was awesome with great experience and knowledge around the park to make flexible planning to make the day the best for everyone! Also small points like managing the time and making sure everyone is there before the bus leaves was impressing. I really recommend if you have to join a tour for Yosemite, to choose his tour.

Excellent photo stops!

Rob was our driver/guide. He showed us some excellent photo opportunities and we even got to see the GG bridge by night. He was a great driver and we really appreciated the lovely clean windows on the bus - this makes such a difference when taking photos on the move.

A little more time at the dinner stop would have been nice but understand the time constraints.

Clever guide!

The vehicle was luxurious, equipped with wifi. And although there was a slight glitch with the break system; the expertise of our driver-&-guide solved the issue in no time. Now coming to our driver-&-guide Rob.. he made the trip more fun with insightful information, fun facts and great suggestions for photos.

The company has a great follow-up system post booking of the trips.. they stay in touch with updates about the trip like pick-up time etc., and also happily address all queries on part of the customer with very little response time. The pick-up timings are almost always a little delayed.. and although they do try to reach out with the delay information.. the lack of internet connectivity for most tourists makes it hard to always become aware of these slight issues. Good experience. We were picked up at Hilton Union Square at 6 AM. The trip is ideal for someone who wishes to visit Yosemite but does not have the time to stay over. Through the tour the guide (In our case David) takes you to various photo points/breathtaking locations. Post that, one goes on the Giant Sequoia trail (it's a slightly uphill walk back - but should be fine even for those with moderate health) David our guide was wonderful, keeping us all engaged throughout the tour. He makes sure to guide through the tour, accompanying us on the Giant Sequoia walk. He even put on a movie on the way back showcasing a climber on the El Capitan at Yosemite. Truly cares about the customer's experience. Overall, this trip is for you if you are short on time/want a quick visit to Yosemite. However, in case you are looking to explore at a more leisurely pace would suggest you make the journey on your own.

Book With Confidence

Award-winning tours & customer service, money back guarantee, worry free cancellation, thousands 5-star reviews, award-winning tour, ½ million happy guests since 2002, what do i need to know about the giant sequoias hike.

The hike is only available when trail conditions are safe, usually April to October. The hike is a 2-mile round trip on a paved trail with a steep incline on the return. Individuals with respiratory issues or not used to strenuous exercise may skip the hike and wait in the outdoor seating area at the Tuolumne Grove stop.

What is the best time of year to visit Yosemite Valley?

Each season in Yosemite Valley offers its own advantages. Summer is the best chance for sunny and warm hikes, Fall offers peace and solitude at the popular attractions, Winter means a blanket of snow over all the rock monuments and Spring features the peak of the annual Yosemite Valley waterfall show.

Is a day trip enough time to see Yosemite?

Our incredible 1-day tour to Yosemite from San Francisco visits all the top attractions, like Tunnel View, El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall, Yosemite Falls, and (conditions permitting) the Giant Sequoias. A longer, multi-day tour allows time to enjoy longer hikes, bike riding, swimming in the Merced River, the night’s brilliant stars and more.

How can I travel around the park during my free time?

Walking is the best form of transportation in the Valley. We do not recommend public transportation or park shuttles during your free time since you cannot be certain about getting back to the tour vehicle on time. The most popular attractions are a short distance from the drop-off point near Yosemite Valley Lodge.

Can I use my annual pass for the United States National Parks to enter Yosemite for free?

Sorry, but no. The entrance fee we pay to Yosemite National Park is based on the vehicle and not on the individuals, and the entrance is located at a toll gate – not on foot. Therefore, the tour cost includes the admission fee.

Do you pick up outside of San Francisco?

Our 1-day Yosemite tour picks up in San Jose in the South Bay (make the reservation here), and Livermore in the East Bay. If you are staying near the San Francisco airport or another location away from the downtown area, we recommend using a ride-sharing service or public transportation to the Hilton Union Square hotel. Our pickup for that location is outside the Mason Street side entrance of the hotel.

Do you offer this tour in different languages?

Our Yosemite tour has live narration in English, but we offer complimentary recorded audio guides in 8 languages: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, and Portuguese. If an audio guide is required, please specify the language when booking.

What should I bring with me on tour?

The weather in the Sierra Mountains can be unpredictable and you will be spending 4-5 hours outdoors enjoying nature. We recommend that you dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes or hiking sandals (not flip flops). Bring along a light water-resistant jacket, camera or phone, 1-liter water bottle, hat and sunscreen, sturdy umbrella (if the forecast calls for rain), and some cash or a credit card for meals, snacks and souvenirs.

Are meals included? Can I buy or bring my own?

Meals are not included on this tour. We do make a stop about halfway to and from Yosemite, where you can buy food and beverages. There are a few restaurants and a food court in Yosemite Valley. They are usually crowded, so it’s a good idea to bring or purchase a picnic lunch prior to arriving in the park.

What stops do we have for photographs?

Your Yosemite tour will make 5-6 stops for you to exit the vehicle and take some photographs although weather and traffic conditions may require your driver to alter the itinerary slightly. The usual stops are: Tuolumne Grove of Sequoias, Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall, Valley View, El Capitan Meadow, and Yosemite Valley View lookout.

What can I do during my free time in Yosemite Valley?

Nice and easy hikes through Cook’s Meadow or to Lower Yosemite Falls or the Swinging Bridge can all be done during your free time. On clear days, biking to Yosemite Village, Mirror Lake or the Ahwahnee Hotel are great choices. Finally, the Ancel Adams Gallery is a wonderful showcase of the artist’s work. We do not recommend taking the park shuttle since the timing of the return trip can be unpredictable.

Day trip to Sonoma

Erica Bradley

July 17, 2023 15 pm EST

I was in SF for work and had a couple days of downtime and this was the perfect thing to do. Marc picked me up at my hotel and I learned so much about the area and the delicious wines of Sonoma. It was nice to get out of the city and a pleasant surprise that the wine area was about 20 degrees warmer than frigid San Francisco.

Warning: You will want to buy all the wine

We just returned from this tour and we had such a great time!! Such a fun group of people and yes I bought too much wine, but they shipped everything to me and I can't wait to impress my friends and have them over.

Such a fun day!

I’m spending 5 days in San Francisco while my husband attends a conference here, so I thought a day trip out to Sonoma for some wine tasting would be fun. Marc, the tour guide (and owner), picked me up promptly at my hotel in Union Square, and we then proceeded to pick up a family of nine at another hotel. His vehicle was clean and in great shape, and he had a cooler of water for us. It was a clear and beautiful day, so I was thrilled that we stopped at the Golden Gate Bridge for photos before driving on to Sonoma. The entire day was a fabulous experience! Marc is very knowledgeable and shared interesting facts about the history of San Francisco, as well as Sonoma and wine making. He was funny, kind, attentive, and did everything he could to make the tour comfortable and enjoyable for us. We visited three small, boutique wineries. The wines were all good, and I enjoyed tasting them all. We were also able to meet the owners, which is always nice. The family of nine was a fun and friendly group, and they made the day even more enjoyable. Our last stop was in Sausalito, to stretch our legs or to do a little looking around. This stop was only 30 minutes, and it was dark, so not a lot to report. I would say that if you want to see Sausalito, you should just take an Uber or ferry, and spend the day there, as it looked like a great place to shop and dine. Overall, this is a great tour, and I highly recommend it for a wonderful break from the city. Marc is a terrific tour guide, and it’s clear that he loves what he does for a living, and he does it well. You won’t be disappointed.

Great Tour! On account of our Tour guide Marc we had a fantastic experience with delicious wine and welcoming hosts. Can recommend it a 100% and will definitely do it again next time. Thank you also to Peter, Nilu and Courtney for explaining so extensively and passionately about wine. We loved it!

Amazing Time in Sonoma!

December 21, 2021 19 pm EST

I love wine but my husband is more of a beer guy. This trip was absolutely wonderful. All of the wines were so delicious and the guide and people at the wineries taught us so much. Sonoma is so beautiful and it was 20 degrees warmer there than in San Francisco! Wow!

Yosemite tours with lodge stay.

This Yosemite tour from San Francisco includes a stay at the charming and rustic Bug Lodge. The slowed pace and loads of free time means you can experience a giant redwood grove and enjoy leisurely hikes or bike rides to Yosemite National Park’s famous nature, monuments and waterfalls. Guaranteed departures every day of the year.

Customize your multi-day tour to Yosemite National Park from San Francisco with a stay at the charming and rustic Bug Lodge. Take all the free time you’d like to enjoy the park’s wilderness, towering granite cliffs,  Giant Sequoias  and awe-inspiring waterfalls.

Let our travel consultants and expert guides introduce you to the many summertime and wintertime activities. Be sure to hear all about the history, geology and wildlife that make  Yosemite Valley  the jewel of the U.S. National Parks.

Travel and Hospitality Awards named this the best Yosemite tour from San Francisco for its jaw-dropping natural beauty. The tour has earned more 5-star guest reviews because our top notch guides know how to maximise your time to include the Giant Sequoias among the attractions in Yosemite Valley.

Your Yosemite Giant Sequoia Tour begins on your outbound day with a pickup at your hotel, then heads east crossing through California’s fertile San Joaquin Valley and into the craggy Sierra Nevada mountains. See 150-year-old mining towns and learn the extensive history of the region.

Soon after entering Yosemite, you will experience the solitude of the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. You won’t doubt for a second that these are the largest living creatures on the planet. No picture does them justice – but that should not keep you from trying!

In winter, when conditions on the Tuolumne Grove trail are snow-covered or unsafe, we substitute this experience with other attractions.

Your heart (and cameras) will be racing as you enter and enjoy a stop at (also known as Tunnel View). Take a moment and then some selfies with, and as your backdrop.

Your free and unguided time begins after taking YARTS to check into the Bug Lodge (bus fee not included). Hostel dormitories have new white steel beds, lockers, shower amenities and linens included. Very nice and very clean, these are usually two rooms sharing two baths, two showers and a sink bank at 645 sf. Backpackers still set the tone at the Bug and we have a guest kitchen for those who bring some food of their own. Decks outside with tables and chairs, too. In-room phones and TV are not available in this class of accommodation.

Take one or more days to enjoy the park before your return day. Activities you arrange on your own range from hiking, biking, rock climbing, rafting, fishing or nighttime stargazing (in spring and summer) to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, tubing or ice skating in winter. Please note: activities depend on the season and conditions and are not included.

IMPORTANT:  Please note that the YARTS bus stop is at a bus shelter on SR 140, involving a walk of about .25 miles (400 meters) first down and then up a hill, with no street lights. The road is paved until you reach the parking area. Most of the winter is spent without significant snow here, but the road is slippery occasionally. The commute time from the Yosemite Valley to the hostel is approximately 75 to 90 minutes. Please be prepared with a flashlight.

What You’ll Experience:

  •  Stay in a shared room at the Bug Lodge
  •  Pickup at most San Francisco hotels
  •  Tour Yosemite on the arrival and departure days
  •  Hike to Giant Sequoias (conditions permitting)
  •  Expert tour guide & commentary in English
  •  Free time in Yosemite from dropoff on the first day until pick up on departure day
  •  Transportation to San Francisco on the last day
  •  8 foreign language audios
  •  Free WiFi on vehicle
  •  Park entry fee included at checkout
