Pierce The Veil And The Used Announce Co-Headline The Creative Control Tour

Today, rock icons  Pierce The Veil  and  The Used  announced that they will be hitting the road this summer on  The Creative Control Tour . The epic co-headliner kicks off on May 23rd in Austin, TX, making stops across the U.S. and Canada in Tampa, Toronto, Baltimore, New York, Grand Rapids, Irvine, and more before wrapping up in Phoenix, AZ on July 2nd with support from Don Broco, Deathbyromy (5/23 – 6/10), and girlfriends (6/12 – 7/1).

Established in 2000, The Used was brought to life and have since released a collection of albums that pioneered the scene of emo rock. High energy live shows, gut wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock was the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally.

The Used released their ninth studio album,  Heartwork (Deluxe),  in 2021 via Big Noise. The extended album features 11 never-before-heard tracks that were all written during the original  Heartwork  (2020) sessions. A variety of collaborators including producer John Feldmann, co-writer Mark Hoppus (Blink-182), guest artists Travis Barker, Jason Aalon Butler (Fever 333), Caleb Shomo (Beartooth) and more helped deliver this now 27-track album that simultaneously showcases what made The Used emerge as one of the most prolific bands of the early 2000s as well as what has kept them at the forefront of the genre ever since. The band locked in #4 spots on both the Top Alternative and Top Hard Rock Album charts, #11 on Top Rock Album charts as well as landing in the  Billboard Top 200  at the #87 spot.

Pierce the Veil dropped the new album The Jaws of Life, their first in seven years, in February via longtime label Fearless Records.  The Jaws of Life  marked a welcome return for PTV, with press praise pouring in from Rolling Stone, Uproxx, Huffington Post, Gawker, and MTV, among others.

The Used + Pierce the Veil Announce Co-Headlining 2023 Tour With Three Other Special Guests

The Used and Pierce the Veil have just announced "The Creative Control Tour," a co-headlining North American run which will also feature special guests Don Broco , DeathbyRomy and/or Girlfriends at select stops.

Both groups will be out in support of 2023 albums with  Toxic Positivity from The Used arriving on May 19, just four days before the tour starts, and  The Jaws of Life , the latest from Pierce the Veil after a seven-year gap between full lengths.

It all starts in Austin, Texas on May 23 with a total of 26 dates on the books, the last being July 2 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Calling all emo kids, the Creative Control Tour is officially in motion! The Used and Pierce The Veil kicked off their joint trek on May 23rd in Cedar Park, TX, and it was everything you could imagine from the two veteran post-hardcore bands.

Both groups released new albums in 2023, and the setlist was packed with old and new essentials that made the crowd go crazy. Let’s start with Pierce The Veil, shall we? The SoCal-bred group re-emerged early this year with their fifth album, The Jaws of Life . Coming a whole seven years after their last project and a half-decade off from performing, fans have long awaited the day they could see another Pierce the Veil concert in the flesh. And Vic Fuentes and his bandmates didn’t disappoint.

They performed three brand-new songs from The Jaws of Life — “Death of an Executioner,” “Pass the Nirvana,” and “Emergency Contact.” And the cool part? They played all new tracks within the first twenty minutes of their set. Therefore, there was plenty of room to finish with the classics that every elder emo remembers “hardcore dancing” to back in the day. We’re talking about “Hold On Till May,” “Southern Constellations,” “The Boy Who Could Fly,” and “Circles.”

The final two songs of Pierce the Veil’s set are practically synonymous with the early 2000s post-hardcore scene. “Caraphernelia” is a scream-worthy track featuring A Day to Remember’s Jeremy McKinnon, while “King For A Day” has guest vocals from Kellin Quinn of Sleeping with Sirens. Sadly, neither frontman was there in person for a live duet. But Pierce The Veil frontman Vic Fuentes took over their verses with his own stellar vocal range and positive vibes. And the Pierce The Veil set ended with plenty of fist-pumping, scream-singalongs, and so much more.

Then, it was time for The Used to take the stage. And anybody who has attended their concerts in the past knows they tend to get a bit crazy! Frontman Bert McCracken lightens things up with his witty banter and bold stage presence, which he took up a notch as they celebrated their brand-new record. Toxic Positivity just came out on May 19th and is already garnering rave reviews, so they wasted no time diving into your favorite tracks.

They performed two new songs, “Numb” and “Giving Up,” from Toxic Positivity , plus other 2020s singles like “F*** You” and “People Are Vomit” that didn’t make it onto the album. The rest of the set comprised the best The Used songs from the past two decades. From “I Caught Fire” and “The Taste of Ink” to “A Box Full of Sharp Objects” and “All That I’ve Got,” it was a night of nostalgia for eyeliner-clad elder emos everywhere. The band loves celebrating every era of their career and had a blast performing alongside their friends in Pierce the Veil for the first time.

Well, kind of. The two bands have crossed paths dozens of times over the years, from their stints together on Warped Tour (RIP) to playing the inaugural When We Were Young Festival in 2022. But the 2020s have been a year of emo revival, and it was finally time for The Used and Pierce The Veil to come together on the Creative Control tour. And the best part? Pierce The Veil And The Used Announce Co-Headline The Creative Control Tour

Today, rock icons  Pierce The Veil  and  The Used  announced that they will be hitting the road this summer on  The Creative Control Tour . The epic co-headliner kicks off on May 23rd in Austin, TX, making stops across the U.S. and Canada in Tampa, Toronto, Baltimore, New York, Grand Rapids, Irvine, and more before wrapping up in Phoenix, AZ on July 2nd with support from Don Broco, Deathbyromy (5/23 – 6/10), and girlfriends (6/12 – 7/1).

Recently, The Used announced that their newest album Toxic Positivity will be out on May 19 via Big Noise. Toxic Positivity includes the previously-released, no-holds-barred singles “Fuck You” and “People Are Vomit.”

Established in 2000, The Used was brought to life and have since released a collection of albums that pioneered the scene of emo rock. High energy live shows, gut wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock was the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally.

The Used released their ninth studio album,  Heartwork (Deluxe),  in 2021 via Big Noise. The extended album features 11 never-before-heard tracks that were all written during the original  Heartwork  (2020) sessions. A variety of collaborators including producer John Feldmann, co-writer Mark Hoppus (Blink-182), guest artists Travis Barker, Jason Aalon Butler (Fever 333), Caleb Shomo (Beartooth) and more helped deliver this now 27-track album that simultaneously showcases what made The Used emerge as one of the most prolific bands of the early 2000s as well as what has kept them at the forefront of the genre ever since. The band locked in #4 spots on both the Top Alternative and Top Hard Rock Album charts, #11 on Top Rock Album charts as well as landing in the  Billboard Top 200  at the #87 spot.

Pierce the Veil dropped the new album The Jaws of Life, their first in seven years, in February via longtime label Fearless Records.  The Jaws of Life  marked a welcome return for PTV, with press praise pouring in from Rolling Stone, Uproxx, Huffington Post, Gawker, and MTV, among others.

Deepfake Creators Are Revictimizing GirlsDoPorn Sex Trafficking Survivors

For years, nonconsensual deepfake pornography has been used to harass, silence, shame, and abuse women. Celebrities and influencers have their faces implanted into existing adult videos ; men have used the technology to place “friends” into explicit videos ; and boys have allegedly created “nude” images of their female classmates . However, among the ever growing harassment and abuse , deepfake creators have now, arguably, hit a new low: using videos of sex trafficking victims as the basis of the nonconsensual videos.

Over the past two months, an account on the largest deepfake sexual abuse website has posted 12 celebrity videos that are based on footage from GirlsDoPorn, a now-defunct sex trafficking operation that the US Department of Justice says its operators used to conspire and commit sex trafficking through “ force, fraud, and coercion ,” tricking five women—and allegedly hundreds more— into making sex videos that were subsequently posted online.

The dozen videos—which ran up to 21 minutes long and racked up tens of thousands of views before they were taken down following WIRED’s inquiry—used footage originally posted to the GirlsDoPorn website and had celebrity faces added using artificial intelligence. It appears that a startup’s face-swapping tool may have been abused to transform the videos into deepfakes, according to watermarks on the footage.

As deepfake technology has become increasingly capable of creating realistic imagery and easier to use, hundreds of websites and apps designed to create or host deepfake sexual abuse have appeared. Laws to limit the use of these tools and protect those targeted are lagging, even as the malicious use of AI has evolved to not just create new victims but to revictimize survivors.

From 2012 to 2019, the DOJ says, the creators of GirlsDoPorn worked by recruiting young women, using ads posted on Craigslist, for what they claimed were clothed modeling photo shoots. When the women responded, they were told the ads were for pornographic videos, and they were pressured into taking part, according to various lawsuits and survivor testimonies .

The individuals behind the scheme, according to the DOJ , told the women the videos would only be sold on DVDs outside of the United States and the footage would not be posted to the internet. Instead, they then posted short videoclips to online platforms, such as Pornhub, and full-length versions to their GirlsDoPorn website. The videos have circulated online since.

Multiple legal proceedings against the creators of GirlsDoPorn, people affiliated with the website, and Pornhub's parent company are ongoing or have been completed—with criminal charges being issued against several GirlsDoPorn organizers in October 2019.

Since then, 22 survivors have been awarded nearly $13 million in damages, and 402 victims were given copyright ownership of videos featuring them, making it easier to scrub them from the web. At the end of 2023, Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo Holdings, agreed to pay damages to women impacted by the sharing of the GirlsDoPorn videos.

Among those charged, Ruben Andre Garcia, a GirlsDoPorn producer and recruiter, was sentenced to 20 years in prison ; Matthew Isaac Wolfe, who admitted to having a “wide range of responsibilities” at GirlsDoPorn, according to the DOJ, was sentenced to 14 years ; cameraman Theodore Wilfred Gyi was sentenced to four years ; and GirlsDoPorn bookkeeper Valorie Moser pleaded guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and is awaiting sentencing. Finally, in March this year, the alleged GirlsDoPorn mastermind, Michael Pratt, was extradited from Spain to the US to face charges linked to the operation . He has pleaded not guilty. In total, those involved in GirlsDoPorn have been ordered to pay more than $35 million in restitution.

Brian Holm, a managing attorney at the Holm Law Group and a longtime civil attorney for GirlsDoPorn survivors, confirmed that the videos posted to the deepfake sexual abuse website were originally from GirlsDoPorn. These include, Holm says, survivors who have been involved in the legal cases against GirlsDoPorn or against Pornhub.

“It’s a real double whammy for trafficking victims to see their videos used like this,” says Holm, adding that the videos are the tip of the iceberg. “From what I’ve seen on that site, I think there's 10 times the amount you sent me that I’ve seen on there.”

The 12 videos posted by the account seen by WIRED have received up to 15,000 views each, and several have a ‘girlsdoporn.com’ watermark on the footage. The account that posted the videos has a version of “GirlsDoPorn” as its username and included the sex trafficking site in the title of the videos.

WIRED is not naming the deepfake abuse website due to its role in spreading abusive content or the celebrities featured in the videos. The website is the largest website of its kind—hosting tens of thousands of videos and receiving millions of visitors. In April, the website blocked visitors from the UK after lawmakers in the country announced plans to make it a criminal offense to create nonconsensual explicit deepfakes.

“These creators of sexually explicit deepfakes have no regard whatsoever for the women and girls who are victims of sex trafficking and now being further abused through this deepfake sexual abuse,” says Clare McGlynn, a professor of law at Durham University, who works to counter image-based abuse .

“This website is actively choosing to share recordings of actual sexual assaults,” McGlynn says. “These are heinous acts, deliberately and knowingly causing life-shattering and life-threatening harms. The drive for profit, for fueling the trade in nonconsensual porn, knows no bounds. This shows a contempt for the rights of women and girls.”

Neither the account posting the deepfake GirlsDoPorn videos nor the site’s anonymous administrator’s replied to questions from WIRED.

At the end of March, another user on the website asked whether the GirlsDoPorn footage was allowed, saying it made them “feel sick.” They suggested some people may not know the history of GirlsDoPorn but pointed out: “This … one user clearly does tho, with branding themselves with a rape website.” A moderator replied saying they were not going to remove the videos but said if there was a “list” of videos confirmed to include sex trafficking victims they would notify the website’s administrators to take them down.

As well as the GirlsDoPorn watermark, the 12 videos hosted on the deepfake website also have a watermark of US company Akool, which offers generative AI services, including a “ face-swapping ” tool, to marketing professionals.

Jiajun Lu, the founder and CEO of Akool, says the company’s terms of service prohibit copyright violations, sexual and violent content, and it frequently bans accounts. “They are strictly forbidden on our platform, and we have multiple approaches to prevent it from happening, and more solutions are coming up soon,” he says. “We changed our watermarks a few months ago, and these videos might not come from our website.”

The CEO says that the company is working on new safety tools as it increases the security of its website: For instance, it is considering verifying the identity of people trying to use its face-swapping tool using face recognition, and initially the team is building more prominent warning notices about prohibited use cases.

Since 2016, Charles DeBarber, director of operations at technology firm Phoenix AI, has been undertaking the arduous task of discovering and trying to remove content from GirlsDoPorn that has been posted online. As part of Phoenix AI , this work—including building tools to automate online searches and using face recognition—has helped to remove around 60 GirlsDoPorn survivors’ footage from the web, DeBarber says.

“Not only does it open wounds of survivors already, but it's making new survivors and making new victims,” DeBarber, who has worked with GirlsDoPorn survivors for years, says of the deepfakes. The deepfake abuse website, DeBarber says, doesn’t take anything down when requests are made to it, and it is hosted by a company registered in the Seychelles.

Since deepfake sexual abuse videos appeared more than half a decade ago, those targeted by them have struggled to get them removed from the web, and US lawmakers have been slow to regulate or criminalize the abusive behavior. In many instances, including in wider cases of image-based abuse, people trying to remove abusive content from the web have had to resort to complaints made under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act . According to DeBarber, it’s not enough.

“Our laws are written in a way that protects intellectual property but not survivors, and it’s very demeaning for a lot of our survivors,” he says. “These are people that were treated like a commodity, and now we have to use intellectual property law to get it down.”

Flag-waving fans cite one reason for traveling to the Paris Games for Tuesday’s semifinal match: “We came to support Imane.”

PARIS — One bought a ticket and ventured to the grounds and walked through the gates even though, he said, “I don’t know her, and I don’t really like boxing.” One traveled about 250 miles from Lyon to Paris because, she said, “I thought she needed us.” Two brothers just starting their 20s rode the slow train 250 miles from Strasbourg on the German border for a one-night stay in Paris because, one began, “Algeria is in our hearts.”

All joined a sudden throng of Algerians and Algerian French who have forged a cheering noise grand enough to join a distinctive category among noises, even sports noises: It’s that ilk of din that seems to have journeyed from somewhere so deep in the gut that it has amassed consuming urgency and goose-bumping tenor.

As the small-town Algerian girl turned 25 and formidable in her second Olympics has faced a global firestorm about her gender, Algerians and Algerian French at the boxing venues and in Algerian newspapers have provided a lesson to outsiders: Any question about whether a country often viewed as rigid would support an athlete sometimes viewed as an outlier has been met with a demolition that all would view as emphatic.

With tennis dreamscape Roland Garros repurposed into a boxing joint Tuesday night, they poured through the stylish gates beforehand in defiance and down the stadium steps afterward in giddiness, Imane Khelif having won a unanimous decision over Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand to advance to the gold medal match.

“Actually, the story started when Imane faced injustice according to her gender,” Dhikra Boukhavouba, a young woman who came to Paris as a student and also has studied in Washington, said just after the bout. “They’re saying she was a man just because she’s an African, Algerian woman, really strong. And actually, Algerian people are known for having the blood, which means we support each other, even though we’re a really conservative country.

“But we respect women, we support each other, and especially when it’s a champion like Imane, and when we saw this injustice accorded to her, we really wanted, actually, to support her and to say that all the Algerian people are with her, and we are here to support her until the end, even if she wins or if she loses. We are here for her. We are here to support her because she’s an example of the resistance of Algerian women.”

She concluded, “She’s the daughter of the people.”

It’s the second time in Olympic history that Algeria, the North African land of 45 million that France stole from 1830 to 1962, has witnessed a crucial story about one of its female athletes. Most Algerians still regard as a legend Hassiba Boulmerka, the 1,500-meter runner who won Algeria’s first gold medal at Barcelona in 1992 under death threats from religious fanatics in the country, who had to train in hiding in Berlin and who told the BBC in 2012: “As I crossed the line, I thrust a fist into the air. It was a symbol of victory, of defiance. It was to say: ‘I did it! I won! And now, if you kill me, it’ll be too late. I’ve made history!’”

This time, the trouble blared from outside the country, spawning a different dynamic. It has sprung from boxing politics and geopolitics. It has loudened the insinuations from the Russia-backed International Boxing Association during an Olympics that has banned both that association (for corruption) and Russia (save for a trickle of athletes). The words of the famous have spurred the actions of the everyday, fueling a sense they’re needed.

“Yeah, of course, of course,” said Ramy Siouala, 23, alongside his brother Hani Siouala, 21, carrying their Algerian flag and loaning it to another man for photos just before Khelif’s fight. “Because the world was against her, like Donald Trump and Elon Musk [have been]. All those people were very bad to her and we are here to prove that she’s not alone, and we are here for her.”

That need to show support grabbed them enough to warrant the one-night trip from Strasbourg.

Inside the north edges of Paris, in the 18th arrondissement and the neighborhood of Barbes where many Algerians and Algerian French reside, the story does not shout as it has elsewhere. In an area working-class in energy while rich in African cultures both North and sub-Saharan, it’s possible to walk for three hours on a Monday, past markets and hair salons and phone shops and phone shops and phone shops, without any indication of the story. At an old standby coffee shop Algerians frequent, a man behind the bar who declined to give his name wrote in a translation app, “There are several supporters [in the shop] who have said that” they support Khelif.

In Algeria, newspapers routinely deploy the word for “heroine” in reference to Khelif. One offered a video tour of her home. Others have drawn from her Olympic bio while noting how she sold bread and scrap metal and her mother sold couscous to help pay for her training. In the El Khabar newspaper, Mohamed Rabeh wrote that Khelif had “never burst into tears after any fight she had” before these Olympics and this pressure but that “our heroine showed everyone that she is determined to fulfill a promise she made before this important sporting date to raise the national flag and play the national anthem in the sky of Paris by winning the first gold medal of its kind in Arab, African and Algerian women’s boxing at the Olympics, to put an end to all doubters and confirm that she is an example to be emulated.”

The Minister of Youth and Sport, Abderrahmane Hammad, referred to the IBA when he wrote on social media: “Our great Imane Khelif is under attack from an organization that has no legitimacy with the [International Olympic Committee]. Incredible resources [will be] used to legally pursue and hold accountable anyone who dares to threaten or defame her. Our determination is limitless.”

He addressed her: “You are our pride.”

That pride has joined the soundtrack of these Olympics, both at the first boxing venue north of the city and here at the grander site. It gushed before the bout on the front steps, near the bust of Roland Garros, the aviator, and the sculpture of Roland Garros tennis ruler Rafael Nadal, where 49-year-old Algerian and Paris-based rapper Boumohrat Abdelkader Kaky spoke.

“In sports, even guys can be assessed to have elevated [testosterone],” he said. “So the case of Imane, I think it’s politicized — it’s more political than anything else. … It’s more directed at Algeria than at Imane, but Imane has been the subject of all of this, that and the poor thing she does not deserve, because she’s an athlete — she’s not in politics. It is a shame — a great shame.”

Further in stood two friends who had just finished getting photos, Yacine Harrachif, 31, and Nassim Sahnoune, 38. Sahnoune said he didn’t know Khelif and didn’t care for boxing but had to be there.

“For me, it’s not only her; it’s for every woman,” he said. “I don’t like discrimination in general, and in this case — we can’t live in a world where people decide if you are a girl or a boy [by photo or video]. It’s impacted me because we can’t live in a world like this. Not only because she’s Algerian, it’s because she’s a woman and …”

“We cannot make opinion and judgment about women’s bodies today, in this society that we live in,” Harrachif chimed in. “She’s someone doing sports. She’s professional. She’s an athlete. … The situation is very sad because they came through her dad, they had to show the proof about her gender today [as the father did on video Tuesday], and to me, it’s not comfortable. So that’s why we came.”

Inside, by 10:44 p.m. when the announcements of names for ­Khelif’s bout began, the gales of noise began with them. “Imane! Imane! Imane!” they chanted. Flags bounced. Three women in hijabs on the front edge of an upper deck cheered and danced. When, at 10:59, the referee stood with the boxers and the announcer rumbled the identity of the winner beginning with, “In blue …”, a moment of hesitation preceded a boom of noise.

Outside afterward, Hayate Soufyane and Sehil Boussafi wore T-shirts with Khelif in a photo, her name just above and the words “Made In Algeria” just below.

“We came to support Imane,” Soufyane said, “and we are very pained by what she has suffered, the harassment she has experienced on the internet. And that’s why we came here today to support her, and it’s true that many Algerians came here today, they came out in force, and she really deserves it. We have goose bumps, and we are full of emotions — and really we are happy.”

Across the walking area beneath the stadium, Khadidja Brahimi, a makeup artist from Lyon, sat in chic attire with her glasses tucked onto her forehead and hijab. She and a friend reveled in the evening. They searched through a translation app for a word to describe their hope as a role in society for Khelif and came up with “example.”

“She needs that, and she deserves everything,” Brahimi said. “I know the city where she’s from because I have family next to her. They are poor, and so it’s amazing to see someone from this city come here in Paris and do this.”

Holidays are bright and colourful, we all love them because they form a ray of light amongst the grey monotony of the daily grind. Arbat is a real street-holiday, where it is always noisy and fun: people meet, walk, watch the performances of talented street artists with clowns, singers and dancers strutting their stuff. Right on the pavement, artists proudly exhibit their works.

There is a very special atmosphere here that has long attracted representatives of the creative intelligentsia. L. Tolstoy and S. Yesenin, A. Pushkin and his young wife N. Goncharov, A. Blok and B. Pasternak are fondly remembered by the hallowed paving stones along Arbat. It is of no surprise that the heroes of the famous novel ‘War and Peace’ were ‘registered’.

We would like to invite you to take a walk with us along the historic Old Arbat! We will talk about the history and architecture of the most romantic street in Moscow.

• You will hear a lot of interesting facts about the grand houses that were located here and their wealthy residents.
• You will learn how a once inexpensive inn for carriage drivers has since turned into one of the best restaurants in the capital!
• You will see the famous house where A. Pushkin and N. Goncharova spent their honeymoon and stand at the wall dedicated to the memory of post punk/new wave icon Viktor
• You will be carried away down the beautiful side streets such as: Bolshaya Afanasyevsky, Nikolopeskovsky, Filippovsky, Krivoarbatsky. In a bygone era, these streets were part of Arbat and were bustling with its spirit.

B.Okudzhava dedicated some of his lyrical poems to Arbat, his favourite street from childhood. A. Rybakov, author of the famous novel ‘Children of the Arbat’ also lived here. There is also a little corner of Bulgakov's Moscow on Arbat - the former Torgsin store (now the ‘The Seventh Continent’), where the novel ‘The Master and Margarita’ unfolded.

Every house on Arbat is a piece of history, and we will dive into this history head first.
