  • jamesmarsden2023 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Visit!! We arrived at Pessione station - Casa Martini was just across the road! It was a little deserted, but the staff were very friendly. We had an hour to tour the museum ourselves, which was just right and we learned a lot. After the hour, we got a lovely tour of the distillery from Andrea. As it was just the two of us, he made us feel very welcome and clearly had lots of passion for the company and its products. The tasting was brilliant and he was very informative and the cocktail at the end was well worth the extra fee! A real highlight of our few days in Turin. If you like Martini/vermouth/aperativo then do it!! Read more Written April 5, 2024

  • prakashY1517BG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great ambiance and service Was always excited to visit the birthplace of Martini. Went by chance for a friend's birthday party recently. Although it was a private event, food was great, drinks (cocktails) were sublime, service impeccable and the ambiance...words won't do it justice. Chieri isn't really the most visited area in this part of Italy, but if you do happen to be in Torino, a stopover here is a must, especially if you're a Martini & Rossi fan. • rlk2013 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful day out I cannot praise this experience enough; thank you Martina, Matilde and Nino for making the day for us. The tour started with a walk around the museum followed by the discovery tour and rounded off with the tasting and good pairing. The tasting was an eye opener and I’m now a convert to Martini. From Turin catch the train from Porta Susa to Pessione (it cost €3.20 each way) and Casa Martini is right across the street. Fantastic day, thanks to all the staff Read more Written June 9, 2022
  • Fionacko 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great 1/2 hour experience Saw this from a unusual things to do in Turin website and I’m glad I did..I believe that they have recently changed their tour. The entry signs could be better I ended up in their offices initially but was re directed to the museum. The museum reception was very good, a brief explanation of the tour we had booked where to go etc.... However we did not enter the self guided tour in the incorrect place, so it would have been great if they had pointed out that the start of the tour was via wooden doors near the terrace. The self guided tour was good especially when it was in cinque with the audio guide.Loved the tour with the guide who was very knowledgeable, more access to the production areas would have been great. Would have liked to have had a bar/cafe nothing at all was very disappointing.I realised that they are also selling their tours with taster/cocktail classes so it would be a conflict of interest I suppose. The tasters were great by the way. Do try their tours. Read more Written October 2, 2020
  • RoyalBelgium 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Impressive and interesting tour As fans of the Martini brand, we had to visit the the Holy Seat of our beloved drinks. We understood that the tour had just been renovated, which now also includes a look behind the scenes of the factory. The first part of the tour is a well worked out museum which tells you the history of the Martini brand, how the products are made, its car history and even gives you the opportunity to ask a digital bartender for recipes. The second part was a great initiation in the behind the scenes of the factory where the production of the whole global market (except for part of South America) still takes place. As cherry on top, you’ll end with a tasting of different Martini products and end your journey with a cocktail in a beautifully designed bar. This has been the perfect ending of our Italy trip and will surely remain one of the highlights. Read more Written September 10, 2020

  • Eric G 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Casa Martini - hidden jewel If you are in the Piedmont region and can hop a train from Torino a hidden, fun, interesting, jewel is the audio guided experience at Casa Martini. My wife and I like to explore, go for things we didn't plan on doing but yet enjoy the experience, learn a little, drink a little. This self-guided tour is perfect. Get off the train from Torino and you are right across the street from Martini's wonderful facility. The history of wine making is the equivalent of any art or sports museum. No crowds, go at your own pace and you can catch the train back in time for dinner in Torino. Not only will you learn a bit of history but also about the paparazzi (sp?) that helped establish the image of Martini & Rossi. You might even see an advertising extravaganza included the recent George Clooney ads. Really a varied experience. HIGHLY recommend. Read more Written July 23, 2019
  • Jetrotteleglobe 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very instructive visit I went to the Casa Martini mostly because I wanted to purchase their exclusive bottle Gran Lusso which is only available at their museum shop. But I took the time to visit the museum and was greatly surprised. The museum is divided in two parts. One exhibition on wine history in general and one dedicated to Martini itself. I found both exhibition very instructive. The visit is short and the audio guide appropriate. All personnel was very nice. At the end of the visit you get to taste 2 of their products. They display some of the martini advertisement products in the shop. I really enjoyed my visit their and got my Gran Lusso bottle so I had a great time. Read more Written March 15, 2019
  • Reloncher 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience! Martini plant is a true jewel of the area! A must visit if you are around. Very friendly staff, incredible attitude and hospitality. The plant itself is a historic building that was created in 1863 by Martini and Rossi families and since then the factory is producing world's most known vermouth, sparkling and many other alcoholic beverages. The area of the factory is very pleasant especially when the weather is good. The tour has two parts - historic and production. First you visit the museum of wine where you could see ancient and medieval objects that were used in the wine industry. From pots and glasses to grape sqeezing huge machines. Then there is Martini hall of fame - various diplomas, medals, documents and photos. The exhibition is very well organized and extremely interesting to learn how the brand developed. Unbelievable to see how modern were the approaches of the family 100 years ago. From Andy Warhol to George Clooney - all are there)) Then was a part of the excursion related to production. Astonishing to see how vermouth and sparkling wines are produced. From the very beginning how ingredients are prepared to bottling and packaging. Robots everywhere including transportation where laser guided vehicles drive goods by themselves! And the finish inside the historic Martini terrace to see what kind of drinks Martini was producing. Vodka, whisky, cognac - anything under the brand of Martini. Some souvenirs in the end and great memories from the visit! Definately 5 stars!! Great experience Read more Written February 6, 2019

Tour Host, Reno, NV

Gary Lebeck & Wife,

Christian author tj martini, “journeys of paul”, *** price subject to change ***.

SATURDAY – SUNDAY – DAYS 1 & 2: U.S. / THESSALONIKI – We depart Reno today for our flight to Thessaloniki. Upon arrival in Thessaloniki, we will be met by DWM’S local representative and escorted to our hotel in Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece and capital of the province of Macedonia. It was here in the synagogue that Paul “…reasoned with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks…” (Acts17:17). Remainder of the day free. Overnight Thessaloniki. (D, B)

MONDAY – DAY 3: THESSALONIKI / AMPHIPOLIS / PHILIPPI / KAVALA – We depart for Amphipolis and the Region of the Lakes Corinia and Volvi. Paul journeyed through Amphipolis on his way to Thessaloniki. Visit the colossal Lion monument at Sunphipolis (5th century BC) and proceed to visit the unique archaeological site of Philippi, site of the famous battle between two Roman Armies. Here we will have the opportunity to follow the steps of Paul, Luke, Timothy and Silas. We then proceed to the city and the harbor of Kavala where we will have a chance to taste fresh fish and a variety of superb delicacies. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight. (B, D)

TUESDAY – DAY 4: THESSALONIKI / VERGINA / METEORA / KALAMBAKA – After breakfast, we depart for Vergina to visit the excavations of the Royal Palace, the Royal Tombs, and the new museum. We then proceed to the area of Kalambaka, where the famous monasteries of Meteora are located. You will be amazed at these marvelously preserved monasteries hidden in the mountains. We will visit the greatest and most important monastery of all, the “Great Meteoron.” Perfectly preserved Frescoes of the 14th century and Ancient Manuscripts belonging to Royal Collections and Libraries are found here. Overnight at our hotel in Kalambaka. (B, D)

WEDNESDAY – DAY 5: KALAMBAKA / DELPHI / ATHENS – Put on your hiking boots! After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for Delphi via the Central Greece Plateau. At Delphi we take a short climb to the Sanctuary of Apollo Pythion, home of the “Oracle.” A little further up is the theatre where town council meetings were conducted, and a little further, the amazingly preserved coliseum where games were played. (Get in shape for this and do not miss it! This is one of the true highlights of the tour.) We visit the museum and bookstore here, then continue to Athens for overnight. (B, D)

THRUSDAY – DAY 6: ATHENS / CORINTH – We begin this morning with a tour of the city of Athens. We drive past the Academy, the University, and the Parliament with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We continue to the Acropolis, where we visit the Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena and the Acropolis Museum. On the slopes of the Acropolis, we will visit the Areopagus on Mars Hill, site of Paul’s address to “the men of Athens” about their “unknown God” (Acts 17). We then depart for Corinth, taking the road along the Saronic Gulf, fairly the same route that the Apostle Paul took. Corinth was an important place and congregation in Paul’s odyssey (Acts 18 and Letters to the Corinthians) with its temple of Apollo ruins set against the Acrocorinth on which the Temple of Aphrodite was located. Corinth was the largest, richest, and most pleasure-loving city of Greece in the 3rd century BC, so it gave Paul plenty to renounce when he came here in the 1st century AD. Paul worked here three years with Aquilla and Priscilla. Overnight Athens. (B, D)

FRIDAY – DAY 7: ATHENS / PIRAEUS / BOARD LOUIS OLYMPIA CRUISESHIP / SAIL TO MYKONOS – This morning we transfer to the port of Piraeus for embarkation on our cruise ship. We sail to the island of Mykonos with its breathtakingly beautiful, whitewashed buildings and churches. We will wander through the many side streets with homes above the shops and numerous outside, waterfront cafes…a lovely respite. Evening sail for the island of Patmos. (All meals while on board)

SATURDAY – DAY 8: PATMOS / EPHESUS – Early morning arrival at the Island of Patmos. We visit the traditional Grotto where John received the revelations while in exile and St. John’s Monastery atop the island. This afternoon we sail to the Turkish port of Kusadasi. This popular Turkish port is the doorway to Ephesus and rich ancient history. In Paul’s time, Ephesus was a port city. Now, due to natural changes and silt build up, it is an approximate ten-mile bus trip from the port city of Kusadasi. We visit ancient Ephesus, a marvelous archeological site and base for much of Paul’s missionary work (Acts 19 and Letter to The Ephesians). Paul labored and ministered here for three years. He laid the foundation for the strongest Christian church of the First Century. John is said to have brought Mary here. Time permitting, we will wander through the famous Turkish bazaars of Kusadasi. Evening sail for Crete/Santorini. (All meals while on board)

SUNDAY – DAY 9: CRETE / SANTORINI – Morning arrival into Crete, this Island is 156 miles long and from 7 to 30 miles wide. According to legend it’s the birthplace of Zeus. The apostle Paul spent some time here at Fair Havens on the south side of the island. Great poets have sung its praises, a 4.000-year-old history. And the eternal rock continues to stand, strong and majestic, rising proudly from the sea and guarding well the secrets of Atlantis… The present-day crescent shape of the island is a consequence of the activity of the volcano in prehistoric times feeding the myth of the lost City of Atlantis. Sail back to Piraeus (Athens) in the evening. (All meals while on board)

MONDAY – DAY 10: EARLY ARRIVAL INTO ATHENS – We will have breakfast aboard the ship. We then disembark, board our motor coach and transfer to our hotel in Athens. The day is free for us to enjoy this fascinating city on our own. There are many wonderful museums in the city and shopping at the Plaka is always an adventure. Overnight in Athens. (B, D)

TUESDAY – DAY 11: ATHENS / ROME – This morning we fly to Rome from Athens arriving around noon. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight Rome.

WEDNESDAY – DAY 12: ROME – Today we visit the Vatican and St. Peter.  We then enjoy a panoramic tour of Rome.  We will see the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain.  We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, D)

THRUSDAY – DAY 13: ROME – This morning we start our tour at Tre Fountain, the inspiring place where Paul was beheaded.  We will also visit St. Paul outside the walls.  Legend says that the body of Paul is buried here.  We will continue to the Collosseum, Forum, Mamertina Prison, Piazza Navoba and the Pantheon before returning to our hotel for dinner.  (B, D)

FRIDAY – DAY 14: HOME – This morning we travel to the airport for our return flight home.  After a plane change, we continue to Reno. We will return with memories and new friends to last a lifetime and beyond.

Screen Rant

James bond exists in star trek & discovery proved it.

James Bond's existence in Star Trek's universe is tacitly confirmed by Star Trek: Discovery as 007's signature cocktail is name-dropped.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 4 - "Face The Strange"

  • Star Trek Discovery season 5 confirms the long-held belief that James Bond exists in Star Trek.
  • Commander Jett Reno name-drops the Vesper martini, which was introduced in James Bond's Casino Royale book and movie.
  • Deep Space Nine's "Our Man Bashir" homage to James Bond precedes Discovery's nod in season 5, episode 4.

It has long been suspected that James Bond exists in Star Trek 's universe, and Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange" proved it. Written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 , is an extraordinary time travel romp as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) cycle through key events in the USS Discovery's past and potential dark future. Among the surprises is an unexpected shout-out to 007 by Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) .

Star Trek is set in the future, but pop culture inevitably woven its way into the various Star Trek series and movies. For instance, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 saw then-Lieutenant Paul Stamets and Ensign Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) sing David Bowie's "Space Oddity" together. Alcohol consumption certainly has been a part of Star Trek since the saga's original pilot episode, "The Cage." Still, the signature cocktail of James Bond , the most famous secret agent in pop culture, being name-dropped in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 came out of nowhere, but it confirms the long-held belief that 007 exists in Star Trek' s universe .

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Discovery proves james bond exists in star trek, the vesper martini is jett reno's cocktail of choice.

In one of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4's time jumps, Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner are sent back to the events of Star Trek: Discovery season 3's finale when Osyraa (Janet Kidder) and the Emerald Chain attacked the USS Discovery. Burnham and Rayner take out Osyraa's goons, but Michael makes herself scarce so as not to disrupt the timeline by being seen by Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro). After saving Rayner's life, Reno suggests he buy her a drink - "Vesper martini - ice cold". The Vesper martini is the signature cocktail invented by James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Casino Royale .

The Vesper martini is named for 007's tragic love, Vesper Lynd, played by Eva Green in Casino Royale .

James Bond's creator Ian Fleming introduced the Vesper martini in the first 007 novella, 1953's "Casino Royale." The exact recipe is "Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel." Until the 2006 Casino Royale movie which also introduced the Vesper Lynd character, the previous versions of James Bond only ordered vodka martinis "shaken, not stirred". Commander Jett Reno specifically requesting a Vesper martini makes her a James Bond fan , or at least a fan of his favorite drink, and verifies that 007 and Casino Royale exist in Star Trek 's universe.

Star Trek’s Greatest James Bond Homage Was On DS9

"our man bashir" is a classic ds9 episode..

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine homaged 007 in the classic season 4 episode, "Our Man Bashir." Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) unwinds in Quark's (Armin Shimerman) holosuite by play-acting as "Julian Bashir: Secret Agent," a spy who lives in the 1960s. Bashir's holosuite program is clearly based on James Bond as Julian takes on the kind of international crisis 007 would typically face. With Garak (Andrew Robinson) in tow, Julian Bashir saved the world from destruction at the hands of the evil Dr. Noah (Avery Brooks).

A transporter accident sent Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell), Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), and Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) in the holosuite where they became characters in the Julian Bashir: Secret Agent program.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's "Our Man Bashir" premiered just two weeks after GoldenEye , Pierce Brosnan's first film as James Bond , in November 1995. Although James Bond was never name-dropped - and he still wasn't in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 - "Our Man Bashir" is an obvious ode to 007 that played into the classic James Bond tropes even more than GoldenEye did. Because James Bond lives in an era vastly different from the space-faring universe of Star Trek, it makes sense that characters like Jett Reno on Star Trek: Discovery indulge in the old-school fantasy and luxurious trappings of James Bond, like his signature Vesper martini.

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 stream Thursdays on Paramount+

Martini vermouth: tours that will excite your mind, heart and taste buds

Our vermouth tasting holidays explore one of the most iconic Italian creations of all time and journey you to the most exciting destinations in Europe. Join us on a Martini tour and unearth secrets of this drink that have mystified wine and spirit lovers for so many years.

In a world where people are becoming more discerning, and global travelers are learning more about wine and spirits, Martini remains something of a mystery to many. This category of aromatized wine is often misunderstood, and few ever get the opportunity to delve further into its exciting flavor profiles and captivating past.

To the masses, vermouth is simply something you put in a Vodka Martini. But our cultured tasting tours will show that there is so much more to Martini than the eponymous cocktail. There’s a whole new dimension of drinks to be explored for the first-time vermouth drinker.

Vermouths are primarily produced in Italy or France , and although enjoyed across the globe, there’s not much out there in terms of education. If you would like to find out more about the art of blending vermouth, join us as we journey across beautiful lands and meet the Master Blenders responsible for making the Martini range. A skill trusted to only a select few and passed down from master to master through the generations, a Master Blender is required to have years of training.

Book your tour with Wine Paths and you’ll be able to meet the experts, train your nose, and delight your taste buds with the perfect mix of Martini and gastronomy. We aim to create unforgettable holidays and can customize experiences to suit you.

All about Martini

Martini vermouth is produced by starting with a base of neutral grape wine or unfermented wine. Several wine grapes, including Clairette blanche, Piquepoul, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Catarratto and Trebbiano, are generally used to get a low-alcohol wine that is aged for a short period before adding other ingredients.

Technically, vermouth isn’t a spirit, but a fortified wine. It is a flavored, aromatized wine with an ABV boost and a variety of spices and botanicals added in. Most vermouths are bottled at between 16% and 18% ABV, compared with the 9–14% ABV of most unfortified wines. Its color is clear, with hues ranging from pale straw to blood orange or brownish red, depending on the type of grape used for the wine base.

Historically, there were two main types of vermouth being made; sweet and dry. Depending on the style, it can be sweetened with either cane sugar or caramelized sugar. But over the years, in answer to market demands, there have been creations of many more styles. Many of these feature unique profiles and are spiced or flavored with complex ingredients.

Martini Bianco is made to be somewhere between Martini Extra Dry and the Martini Rosso, giving a greater balance for those who prefer something in between. Other varieties available to try include Martini Fiero (flavored with bitter orange) and Martini Rosato (with notes of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg).

The history of Martini

The company Martini was founded in 1863 by Alessandro Martini, Luigi Rossi and Teofilo Sola in Pessione, northern Italy. Their iconic brand has kept recipes for their original Martini Rosso vermouth under lock and key for over 150 years.

At the turn of the 20th Century, Martini was being sold in 70 countries and in every continent. Ever since the vermouth has remained a bar staple. With its unique blends of wine, botanicals and sugar, the company has produced a selection of vermouths to suit every palate. A large proportion of their base wines are made from grape varietals grown in Sicily and Emilia Romagna, and a variety of dry blended herbs, fruits, spices and barks are used for the flavoring process.

Today, the company is headquartered in Turin, home to some of the best vermouth tasting experiences in the country. As well as manufacturing the world’s most recognizable aromatized wine, the brand also blends sparkling wines such as Asti and Prosecco, as well as some modern expressions of classic vermouth with a modern twist.

Where to try vermouth

One of the best places to taste Martini is in Turin, Italy’s aperitivo capital. Vermouth is one of the world’s most versatile cocktail drinks, and there’s no better place to rediscover the magic of Martini than the home of the iconic company. The brand has since been bought over by Bacardi and now offers visitors a crash course in the important history of their flavored wines.

The Martini label has come a long way, with a new wave of crafted vermouths for fans to try. From sipping cocktails in the city’s stylish cafes to enjoying a tasting lesson at Casa Martini, there are so many ways you can experience Martini in all its modernity.

Vermouth is also produced in France, primarily in Marseillan in the south. French vermouth is generally pale and dry, and is bitter compared to common sweet vermouths. The bitter flavor profile is created with nutmeg or bitter orange peel.

Join us on a vermouth tour of Italy

At Wine Paths, we take our clients to Italy to experience the Vermouth di Torino. We organize vermouth and Martini tasting tours in the city of Turin and around, and reintroduce worldly drinkers to this historic flavored beverage.

We believe that Martini is often misinterpreted as an ingredient only for Vodka Martinis, when it has huge versatility. It can be used in so many different cocktails, can be mixed in a number of ways, and can be enjoyed (best of all) straight up.

Is Martini wine related to the Martini cocktail?

Although Martini vermouth is used in the world-famous Vodka Martini cocktail, they aren’t linked. The Martini cocktail likely named itself after the vermouth, but not the other way around.

Is Martini the only brand of vermouth?

The Martini brand is the most iconic brand of vermouth in the world, but Italy is home to a number of vermouth producers.

What is the best way to taste Martini?

Try your Martini on the rocks with a citrus twist. This is one of the best ways to bring out the layers of complex aromas.

Discovery Season 5 Episode 4 Easter Eggs Dig Up Classic Star Trek Time Travel Canon

From the moment the titular starship was built, to at least one possible future, Burnham has gone back to the past of the future. Again. Here are this week's best Star Trek: Discovery easter eggs!

Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

In terms of individual episodes, Star Trek: Discovery does not hold any kind of Star Trek record for more time travel stories. But, it’s also the Trek series in which time travel is the most integral to the stories, characters, and themes. In season 1, Trek canon introduced “time crystals” and by season 2, the entire crew became unstuck in time forever.

Now, in the fourth episode of its final season, Discovery is revisiting some of its timey-wimey themes, with a time loop-ish episode centered on Captain Burnham and our new favorite grouchy first officer, Commander Rayner. And, throughout this surprisingly tender episode, Discovery drops some very deep cut references not only to its own history but the larger Trek tapestry as well. Here are the biggest, and coolest easter eggs in “Face the Strange.”

The Red Angel

Right away, just before the opening credits, Burnham and Rayner find themselves on a damaged version of Discovery stuck in a wormhole. Burnham points out the person in the space suit, flying ahead of them is “the Red Angel,” which was also her. This reveals a moment in between the season 2 finale “Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2” and the season 3 premiere, “That Hope Is You, Part 1.” So, while this is a flashback for Burnham, it’s also, technically, something we never saw in the timeline of the show. And, as the time jumps continue throughout the episode, this becomes a running theme: A jump to a familiar time, but not into an exact episode moment from the past.

Ad – content continues below

San Francisco Fleet Yards

When Burnham and Rayner find themselves looking out the window and seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, Burnham says “we’re in drydock.” This means they’re standing in the ship before the ship was even launched. Whether they’re standing in a completed version of Discovery, or just part of the ship is unclear. A huge portion of Trek starships were built in the “San Francisco Fleet Yards,” though generally, that’s considered to be an orbital facility. That said, the Trek 2009 reboot movie floated the idea that some parts of starships could be built on the ground. It would appear that this was the case with Discovery, too, since the ready room at this moment is incomplete.

The USS Discovery was first launched sometime in 2256, so this moment has to be during that year or earlier. In terms of the ship’s timeline, this is the earliest moment in history we’ve glimpsed for the USS Discovery.

Battle with Control

Rayner and Burnham soon jump back to a similar moment in time that they visited before — the battle with Control. This references the events of the season 2 finale again, “Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2,” in which the Discovery and the Enterprise joined forces to fight off the Section 31 fleet that had been possessed by the AI known as Control. This moment was also the same moment that sparked the events of the very first episode of Strange New Worlds , since these events were glimpsed by a neighboring, pre-warp planet.

The Time Bug

Rayner realizes that the reason he and Burnham are cycling through time is because of a weapon called a “Time Bug.” Rayner says it’s also called a “Krenim chronophage,” which references the alien species the Krenim from the famous Voyager two-parter “Year of Hell.” In that episode, the Krenim were using a temporal weapon to wipe out entire planets from the timeline. Rayner also mentions that the “time bugs” are “left over from the temporal war.” This references Star Trek: Enterprise , and the temporal war waged by Daniels and others. Most people aware of the temporal war were from the 30th century, about two hundred years before the events of Discovery Season 3.

Stamets’ Tardigrade DNA

Burnham knows that Stamets will also be aware of the time shifts because “he lives outside of time because of his Tardigrade DNA.” This references Discovery season 1, specifically the episodes “Choose Your Pain” and “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.” In “Choose Your Pain,” Stamets injects himself with Tardigrade DNA after he and Burnham realize that using their own overgrown Tardigrade, named “Ripper,” to navigate the Spore jumps is killing the creature. In “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” Burnham is stuck in a different time loop, and only Stamets is aware that it’s happening.

Reno’s Vesper Martini

During the next jump, Rayner and Burnham are on Discovery during the moment that Osyraa attacks the ship. This references the season 3 finale “That Hope Is You, Part 2,” in which the crew had to fight Emerald Chain forces to take back the ship. Reno is fighting off a few baddies, and Rayner has to pretend like he’s a crewmember from a different ship. Reno asks him to buy her a “vesper martini, ice cold” when everything is back to normal. A Vesper martini was popularized by Ian Fleming in 1953, in the first James Bond novel Casino Royale .

Based on a recipe suggested to him by his friend Ivar Bryce, in the novel, the drink was named for Vesper Lynd, Bond’s famous paramore in the book and the 2006 film of the same name. Interestingly, in real life, a true 1950s Vesper is hard to make because the ingredient of Kina Lillet went out of production in the 1980s. Generally, bartenders today use substitutes like Lillet Blanc in its place, but, because of replicator technology in Star Trek , it’s very possible that Reno’s Vesper martini is more accurate to Fleming’s than anything we can drink today.

Zora and the Future

When Burnham and Rayner jump 30 years into a possible future, they find the ship abandoned and Zora, the ship’s friendly AI, playing music for herself. Zora mentions that she thinks seeing Captain Burnham again is “another dream.” This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a possible future in which Zora is running the ship alone, listening to old music. In the 2018 Short Treks episode “Calypso,” a man called Craft boards a version of the Discovery in the distant future, even beyond the 32nd century setting we’ve seen in the show recently. This was the first episode that revealed Zora’s evolution, and whether or not it’s still the real destiny of the ship remains to be seen.

Warp Bubble’s Purpose

When Rayner, Stamets, and Burnham decide to break the ship’s warp bubble to stop the time bug, Burnham mentions that the warp bubble “is what protects us from the effects of relativity.” This very neatly explains that warp speed in Star Trek , is, in a sense, a form of time travel, since traveling faster than the speed of light, bends the regular way time is experienced. In the first 1964 Original Series pilot “The Cage,” Enterprise navigator Tyler even says “the time barrier has been broken,” and Captain Pike refers to warp factors as “time warp factors.” Everything in Star Trek is kinda time travel, but the warp bubble prevents it from getting too confusing.

Burnham vs. Burnham in Early Season 1

The final stop in the time jumps puts everyone back to a very, very early point in season 1. Here, Lorca is still in command of the ship, but on an “away” mission with Saru and Landry.” Because Landry is still alive, we’re directly between the events of “Context is For Kings” and “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry.” This is why the Burnham from this timeline is still known as “Specialist Burnham,” and why most of the crew hates her. From their point of view, she’s a mutineer, who only recently was allowed back in uniform.

When Burnham has to fight herself, we see Sonequa Martin-Green revert back to a version of her season 1 hairstyle, a fact which Tilly comments on when seeing the future Burnham. During the Burnham-on-Burnham fight, both employ the Vulcan martial art Suus Mahna, which originated in the series Enterprise . However, we saw Burnham and Sarek fight using Suus Mahna in the Discovery season 1 episode “Lethe,” and it’s been a staple of Burnham’s defensive style ever since.

And in the ultimate callback to her upbringing on Vulcan — and to the beginning of Discovery itself — Burnham uses the Vulcan nerve pinch on her younger self. Interestingly, the nerve pinch was invented by Leonard Nimoy for the TOS episode “The Enemy Within.” And, just like in that episode, the nerve pinch was used on a duplicate of the captain; in that case, on the “evil” Captain Kirk.

Burnham using the nerve pinch is also the action that got her busted in the first place. Back in “The Vulcan Hello,” she used it on Captain Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) which put her on the path that resulted in the entire story of Star Trek: Discovery . The Vulcan nerve pinch might be a small Trekkie plot device, but its impact is clearly bigger than a little tap on the shoulder.

Moscow Must-Experiences

You are here.

Whether you've been to Moscow before or are traveling for the very first time, there's always room for discoveries in this mighty city. Here is our list of top places not to miss on your unforgettable  tour to Moscow .

1. The Kremlin

The  Kremlin  is located in the very heart of the capital and is definitely one of Moscow's oldest and most picturesque parts. It is an ancient fortified building complex standing on the banks of the Moskva River. In fact, the city took its name from the river almost 1000 years ago. The whole complex encompasses four majestic cathedrals, five palaces, the Kremlin Wall, and the Kremlin towers.

Some of the palaces are now amazing museums, such as the well-known  Armory Chamber , which is famous for weapons, jewelry, and household objects of the tzars and the collection of fifty marvelous Faberge eggs. The Kremlin is an important cultural and architectural sight considered a true embodiment of its magnificence and poverty. What is more, it is still the current residence and executive office of the head of Russia. It is often used as a metonym to refer to the Russian Federation's government. Moscow Kremlin's complex was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 and highlighted every tour of Russia's capital.

2. Red Square

Red Square  is the oldest square in Moscow and is its main and central one. The name Red (Krasnaya) derives from another meaning of this Russian word beautiful. Located between the citadel of Kremlin and "Kitai-gorod" - a historic quarter of merchants, it is the starting point of the capital's major streets. For over 500 years, the square has been the stage for Russia's political, social, and historical changes and development. And its main buildings recall the solemn events that took place here.

In the XVI century, the Red Square was a site of execution, where Ivan the Terrible put prisoners to death, and where he later began the construction of the famous St. Basil's Cathedral as a repent of his cruel deeds. It was the location where Napoleon stayed with his army in 1912. From 1924 the Red Square complex was supplemented with Lenin's Mausoleum as a monument to the era of Communism. The Red Square (together with the Moscow Kremlin) was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1990. And today, it is a grandstand for national celebrations and parades and a major tourist attraction. Visiting the Red Square is one of the most exciting experiences during  tours to Moscow .

3. St. Basil's Cathedral

This gorgeous cathedral in the name of Saint Vasily the Blessed is considered the most emblematic architectural masterpiece symbolizing Russia. Located on the Red Square in Moscow, the colorful red-bricked beauty is its main precious decoration. Tsar Ivan the Terrible began its construction in 1552. Built in the XVI century, the cathedral originally had eight chapels. The ninth was added in honor of Basil the Blessed.

On the inside, the church is a narrow corridors system, joining perfectly asymmetrical towers, together forming a labyrinth within the cathedral space. The legend says that after the church's construction was completed, Tsar Ivan the Terrible was immensely excited and impressed by the cathedral's beauty. Surprisingly, he sentenced the architects to have their eyes put out. Such cruelty was applied so that the blind masters could never again build such a magnificent church. The  St. Basil's Cathedral  has no close analogs globally and is definitely among the absolute must-visits in Moscow.

4. The State Tretyakov Gallery

By far, the  Tretyakov Gallery  is the most important art gallery in Russia, and it's fair to say that it is among the world's most renowned and prestigious ones. Its history goes back to 1856 when Pavel Tretyakov, a local wealthy merchant, and art collector, created an exhibition of modern works by Russia's contemporary fine artists. The collection was first shown in the big hall of the Tretyakov's family house. Merely ten years later, the "Moscow City Gallery of Tretyakov" was opened to visitors as a gift to the city of Moscow, its expositions encompassing more than 2,000 artworks!

Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

Today the State Tretyakov Gallery is often referred to as "the treasury of national fine arts" for the reason that over 150,000 masterpieces are on display, representing every possible genre and the country's rich traditions. Exquisite sculptures, centuries-old icons, gorgeous paintings, some created by anonymous masters, others by world-known, and admired names. Thus, for those who highly appreciate art, the Tretyakov Gallery is a must-visit place while on  vacation in Russia . It provides a great chance to see modern colorful canvases and the legacy of all generations of artists.

5. The Moscow Metro

The  Moscow Metro  is a huge underground world that not only provides its citizens with fast and comfortable travel about the city but is also among the capital's most famous attractions. Many stations have become considerable landmarks and are protected by the Russian Federation as valuable cultural objects. Every one of the 177 stations has its own unique appearance. Paintings, monuments, bronze statues, and mosaics of marble and stained glass were used in their decoration. The "Sokolnicheskaya" was the first metro railway line in the Soviet Union built as part of the capital's modernization program and opened for citizens in 1935.

The beautiful, almost luxurious space of the first stations is often called "the underground palaces of Moscow." They were carefully designed by the country's best architects and can be truly considered a museum. The concept and style of the stations mostly reflect Soviet values and ideology. For instance, "Revolution Square," "Komsomolskaya" or the "Novoslobodskaya" are named standards of Soviet architecture of pre- and after-war periods and were created as monuments in honor of the Soviet success in industrializing the country and as symbols of the pride and victory of the Russian nation.

6. Bolshoi Theater

The building of the  Bolshoi Theater  was founded in 1825 and has overcome many changes. The biggest theater in the capital traditionally stages opera and ballet, which have always been very significant arts for Russia, pleasing viewers each season with 3-4 new shows. Yet it must be noted that the Bolshoi theatrical and ballet collectives were established much earlier - in the late 1770s. Throughout the years of their existence, they have gifted the world community with many magnificent shows. Bolshoi's Ballet company is among the oldest and largest ones globally, with more than 200 dancers performing here today.

Bolshoi Theater in Moscow

What is more, the Bolshoi Theater's orchestra is now an individual virtuoso ensemble that gives concerts of classical and modern symphonic music playing masterpieces created by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, and others both in the theater and on tours. The name "Bolshoi" has the meaning of "great" or "big," reflecting its importance for the Russian culture. Bolshoi steadily keeps the status of a world-class ballet and opera theater and is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow.

7. Kuskovo Estate

Situated in Moscow's outskirts, the Kuskovo Estate is a great example of typical Russian summer estate architecture. The complex was built in the XVIII century and was first owned by a Russian count Boris Sheremetev, a maven in arts. He turned the palace, park zone with ponds, and pavilion buildings into a real masterpiece combining classicism and baroque styles. Although the palace was located a whole day's travel from Moscow and had no guest rooms, the estate was a trendy place among Moscow's nobility.

Kuskovo Estate Outside Moscow

Balls were given here twice a week, making Kuskovo a major entertainment site for the city's cream. In 1919 after the Revolution, the edifice and its surrounding territories were turned into a natural history museum, and today, it is a place where ceremonies, summer festivals, and concerts are held. Apart from its beautiful buildings and park, Kuskovo also encompasses the famous State Museum of Ceramics, which exhibits fine porcelain and glass collections created by Empress Maria Fedorovna.

Although Moscow might seem like a huge bustling megalopolis it has it's own unique charm and inimitable beauty. Its vast expanses and awe-inspiring atmosphere are a memorable experience for all who travel to Russia's capital. We will be happy to plan your memorable Moscow vacation, feel free to  contact our specialists .
