Itineraries

Spectrum Of The Seas itinerary program is based on Asian roundtrips from China (homeports Hong Kong and Shanghai ). The inaugural cruise (16-night Suez Canal itinerary) was from Barcelona to Dubai (departure April 18, 2019). The second relocation voyage segment (RepositionCruises.com) was from Dubai to Singapore (14-night, themed "Spice Route Cruise", departure May 4).

The combined maiden voyage (51-day "Global Odyssey"/Barcelona to Shanghai) visited ports in 13 countries and was available for booking in 5 segments. From Hong Kong and Shanghai were offered also short breaks (4-day, one-port itineraries) to Vietnam (Danang) and to Japan (Naha or Kagoshima).

From homeport Singapore, Spectrum OTS initially offered only three itineraries - 3-day to Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur Malaysia (May 18 roundtrip), 4-day to Penang Malaysia (May 21 roundtrip) and 9-day repositioning Singapore-Shanghai (May 25) visiting Vietnam ( Saigon , Nha Trang ) and Hong Kong (overnight).

From homeport Shanghai, Spectrum OTS offered 4 roundtrips:

  • 7-day "Best Of Japan" (Kobe, Yokohama)
  • 5-day "Kagoshima and Okinawa" (Kagoshima, Naha)
  • 4-day "Best Of Okinawa" (to Naha)
  • 4-day "Best Of Kagoshima" (to Kagoshima)

For 2021 were scheduled 30 departures from Shanghai (4-5-7-night roundtrips).

From Hong Kong, Spectrum OTS offers 3 roundtrip itineraries:

  • 7-day "Japan and Philippines" (Naha, Salomague Island, Luzon Island/Subic Bay)
  • 5-day "Best Of Vietnam" (Danang, Nha Trang)
  • 4-day "Best Of Chan May" (to Danang)

Following the Coronavirus crisis, in 2021 Spectrum OTS had to restart with cruises to nowhere from Hong Kong (July through November). The "nowhere" schedule included the following itineraries (all without call ports) and departure dates:

  • 2-night (July 30, Sept 5, 17)
  • 3-night (Aug 5, 12, 19, 26, Sept 2, 7, 10, 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov 4, 11, 18, 25)
  • 4-night (Aug 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, Sept 13, 19, 26, Oct 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov 7, 14, 21, 28)
  • Booking requirements for these voyages included: Hong Kong residents only, no Interior cabins (Oceanview and above categories only), passengers 16+ years old to be fully vaccinated (with the 2nd dose received at least 14 days prior boarding) and providing a negative PCR test (within 48 hours prior boarding). Hong Kong Tourism Board's regulations also required operations at 50% of the boat's max passenger capacity .

However, on June 30th, RCI postponed the homeporting and rescheduled it for September.

Spectrum OTS' first Singapore homeporting season (April 2022-2023) started on April 11, 2022. The schedule initially included only 3- and 4-night "cruises to nowhere" (Ocean Getaways), as well as (since June 30, 2022) 3-4-night itineraries visiting Malaysia (Klang/Kuala Lumpur and Klang+Penang). Fares for the 3-nighters started from US$310 pp, for the 4-nighters - from US$390 pp.

In Aug 2022 were scheduled longer (5-7-9-12-night) voyages for 2023-2024. The new program included Hong Kong, as well as ports in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka) and in Southeast Asia - Philippines (Manila), Taiwan (Keelung), Vietnam (Saigon, Danang, Nha Trang), Malaysia (Penang), Thailand (Laem Chabang/Bangkok, Phuket).

In May 2023, RCI announced that Spectrum OTS in Singapore will be replaced by Anthem OTS in 2024-2025 (starting in October 2024). Spectrum OTS will be redeployed to China and homeported in Shanghai and Hong Kong . Starting in April 2024, Spectrum OTS from Shanghai will offer roundtrips to Japanese ports, including Yokohama, Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagasaki. Starting in December 2024, Spectrum OTS has scheduled 8x roundtrips from Hong Kong (China) to ports in Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Spectrum Of The Seas Wiki

On August 16, 2017, with the steel-cutting ceremony officially started the vessel's construction. On November 8th (2017) was the keel-laying ceremony (held at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg Germany ) which started the vessel's physical construction/assembly.

Traditionally, during the special event, newly minted "lucky" coins were placed under the hull's first building block (out of all 74 blocks). All these mega-blocks (hull and superstructure) were constructed and pre-assembled at Neptun Werft Shipyard ( Rostock Germany ), then loaded (via hydraulics) onto pontoons and shipped down Ems River to the shipyard in Papenburg.

Spectrum Of The Seas cruise ship construction

Spectrum OTS is the first "Quantum-Ultra" class liner specifically designed for operations in Asia (China and Asia-Pacific regions). As of 2017, RCI had 6 ships on order (under construction) . The vessel's launch (float-out from drydock) was on February 25, 2019. Then it was berthed at the shipyard's outfitting pier to receive the funnel and North Star structure. The conveyance through Ems River to North Seas (for sea trials) was in March. Following the float-out of Spectrum OTS, into the covered building dock N2 was maneuvered back the hull of Norwegian Encore ( NCL ).

Spectrum Of The Seas cruise ship construction

Spectrum OTS' conveyance from Papenburg Shipyard to Eemshaven Holland (down Ems River) was scheduled for March 19, 2019 (starting at 6 pm) and ending on March 21. Followed sea trials (in the North Sea) to check the vessel's technical equipment and navigation capabilities. Following the sea trials, the ship arrived in Bremerhaven Germany . Next is listed the conveyance schedule:

  • March 19 - 6:30 pm (waiting in Papenburg), 7 pm (passing Dockschleuse (shipyard's river lock)
  • March 20 - 1:30 am (passing Weener Bridge), 6 am (passing Jann-Berghaus-Bridge / Leer), 10:15 am (arriving in Emsperrwerk shipyard), 11: 45 am (passing Emsperrwerk), 1:15 pm (passing Emden Germany )

Meyer Werft officially delivered Spectrum OTS to RCI on April 11, 2019. The ceremony (held at Bremerhaven Shipyard) was attended by Richard Fain (RCCL's Chairman and CEO), Michael Bayley (RCI's President and CEO) and Bernard Meyer (Meyer Werft's owner). The ship's first Captain was Charles Teige (previously Master of Liberty OTS ).

The liner's christening ceremony was held on June 3 (2019) in Shanghai China , after completing the 46-day relocation voyage from Europe (see below). The naming ceremony (held at Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal) also marked Royal Caribbean's 10th year in China. The event was attended by Michael Bayley (RCI's President and CEO), the couple Xiaoming Huang and Angelababy (godparents), Chinese celebrities.

On September 15, 2014, the shipowner RCCL (Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd) trademarked the ship names Spectrum of the Seas, Joy of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas , Emblem of the Seas, Apex of the Seas. In 2015, RCCL abandoned the trademarks Emblem of the Seas, Passion of the Seas, Pulse of the Seas (on September 7) and the trademarks Apex of the Seas, Joy of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas (on September 14).

On October 17, 2016, RCCL filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for the ship name "Icon of the Seas". RCI previously announced the order of two vessels for the new Icon-class of ships ( LNG-powered , with fuel cell technology). The ship names "Apex of the Seas" (serial number 87507244) and "Joy of the Seas" (serial number 87507232) were trademarked on June 27, 2017. Both names were previously registered on September 14, 2014, but abandoned a year later (September 14, 2015).

On June 24, 2017, RCCL filed a trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office for the ship name "Spectrum of the Seas".

Spectrum OTS drydock 2024

The ship's first drydocking was in 2024 (March 28 through April 17) at Singapore 's Seatrium Shipyard (in Tuas).

The project included regular/routine maintenance, safety inspections/classification works, minor repairs, renovation of public areas (carpeting, upholstery) and cabin updates.

Royal Caribbean SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS: Cruise Guide for First-Timers

Royal Caribbean SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS: Cruise Guide for First-Timers

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Like royalty neatly ensconced on her berth, the Spectrum of the Seas looked intimidating as our van approached the port building at Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal (or Baoshan Cruise Terminal), one of the three international cruise terminals of Shanghai Cruise Port. She reminded me of her sister, the Ovation of the Seas, which I had the opportunity to experience before. They almost look the same. Almost.

Although it’s not my first time cruising with Royal Caribbean, it was still overwhelming for me. Careful planning is key, especially for first-timers, so you won’t faint when your senses are bombarded with all the goodness a cruise can offer. Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your cruise getaway with Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas.

Note: These apply as of this writing. But please double check with Royal Caribbean or your travel agent to be sure.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

MORE ABOUT SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS

The Spectrum of the Seas is the newest addition to Royal Caribbean’s fleet. It is also the largest cruise ship in Asia. It is the first of the Quantum Ultra class, an upgraded version of the Quantum class sisters Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, and Ovation of the Seas. The design was the brainchild of both the US and China teams, having in mind the tastes and preferences of its consumers in the Asia Pacific region.

It has a lot in common with its sister ships from the Quantum-class fleet in terms of size, design, and most features. But since Spectrum is a Quantum Ultra class, it has some features that the Quantum-class ships don’t. Here are some of them:

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

  • Ultimate Family Suite (First launched in Symphony of the Seas. A two-level suite that has an indoor slide, an entertainment room, and three bedrooms. Good for 11 pax.)
  • Private suite enclave (for guests staying in Silver and Gold Suites)
  • Star Moment (Royal’s first-ever karaoke lounge)
  • Seaplex’s offerings (archery, fencing, and laser tag)
  • Different Main Dining Room Design
  • Some of the specialty restaurants are unique to Spectrum of the Seas only like the Sichuan Red and the Leaf & Bean Café.

WHAT TO PREPARE BEFORE THE CRUISE

The Spectrum of the Seas takes over the Asian itinerary programs, which was previously covered by its sister Ovation of the Seas. It will serve the Asian cruises and will have its home ports in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Here are the things and documents you need to prepare before the cruise.

  • Passport. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six (6) months. You will need to surrender your passport to the staff upon embarkation. You will have your passport back a day before you disembark.
  • Photocopies of passport. Secure a photocopy of your passport as the original one won’t be with you. Aside from your sea pass, you will need the photocopy every time you leave the ship (shore excursions).
  • Visa (only if applicable). For Philippine passport holder, you DO NOT need a visa if you are embarking in Hong Kong. Even if your itinerary involves Japan, for example, HK-Japan-HK, no visa needed. If you are embarking in Shanghai, you just need to secure a visa for China; no need for a Japan visa for Shanghai-Japan-Shanghai That’s as of this writing. But please double check with Royal Caribbean or your travel agent to be sure.
  • Credit card. Or just prepare a US$120 deposit if you don’t have one. The amount will be collected upon check-in.
  • SetSail Pass. Just like with flights, getting on a ship requires a boarding pass/ticket — the SetSail Pass. To save time and avoid the hassle of filling out forms upon check-in, you may do it online and print the set sail pass at least three (3) days ahead of the sailing date. You can also download the Royal Caribbean mobile app and use the app’s mobile SetSail Pass to board the ship.

HOW TO GET A SETSAIL PASS?

You should accomplish this three (3) days prior to your departure/sailing date.

  • Go to Royal Caribbean official website.
  • Click “Already Booked” from the Main Menu, then choose “Online Check-in”.
  • Log-in to online check-in by providing these details: last Name/surname, reservation number, date of departure, and ship name. Click SUBMIT.
  • Accomplish the online form. Note that you need to provide your credit card details (if you have one), travel plans before and after your cruise, emergency contact name and number, etc. You might also be required to upload your photo.
  • Review the details and print out the pass. There will be a barcode at the bottom or side of the page. Make sure the print out is clear, so the barcode scanner can read it. Based on personal experience, ours had to be reprinted by the check-in counter personnel because the barcodes weren’t clear.

HOW DOES THE NEW ROYAL CARIBBEAN MOBILE APP WORK?

It is best to download the app before your sailing date. It’s FREE and all guests can use the app onboard without the need to purchase the Wi-Fi package. Here are just some of the app’s features. ( Note: These vary from ship to ship)

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

  • The app will help you plan your activities by showing you everything that happens on the ship daily. You can just add the activities that you want to do for that day to your calendar.
  • You can also make reservations for onboard activities, shore excursions, shows, and specialty dining/restaurants.
  • Through this app, keeping track of your expenses while on the ship is made convenient by letting you access your Onboard Expense Account.
  • It provides complete deck plans, giving you an overview of each deck. I personally found this feature helpful because I could easily get disoriented inside the ship. :P By looking at the map, I would know where exactly is the Main Dining Room, which deck is the Royal Theater located, where to find the ATM, etc.
  • View other RC ships’ sailing dates and onboard activities. This serves those who are still planning and deciding on which date to sail and what itinerary package to take.
Note: As of writing, the app is only available on fifteen ships, including the Spectrum of the Seas. Covering the entire RC fleet is in the works. Here is the list of ships supported by the app: Adventure of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, and Vision of the Seas.

WHAT TO PACK?

  • Personally, I pack two sets of clothes per day — one for the day activities and another for the evening affairs. I am an active kind of girl, so activities that require a lot of physical exertion are always on my list. Come evening, I will dress for dinner and then watch shows or outdoor movies or check the bars.
  • Some night events call for wearing formal or business attire, but you can choose to skip them if you are not up for it. To be safe, just pack a blazer or outerwear that can pass for both casual and formal attire. If you feel like attending these formal events, you may pack a cocktail dress or a suit and tie. Don’t stress yourself too much about the outfit though; they don’t really mind.
  • Aside from the day and night clothes, I also bring with me swimwear, gym/workout clothes, and sleepwear. For footwear, just bring comfortable shoes and sandals. Bring formal shoes to match your outfit if you plan to attend a formal event or dinner.

WHAT NOT TO PACK?

Of course: don’t bring in anything illegal! Here are things that are not permitted on board. If found, these items will be confiscated immediately.

  • illegal drugs and substances
  • firearms and ammunition (including replicas)
  • flammable liquids and explosives
  • sharp object (shaving razors and scissors with less than 4 inches blade length are allowed)
  • items that produce heat and an open flame like candles, incense, coffee maker, hot plates, clothes iron, etc. (curling iron and hair straighteners are allowed)
  • extension cords
  • hoverboards
  • alcoholic beverages ( Note: On boarding day, guests may bring up to two 750 ml bottles of wine or champagne and must only be consumed inside their respective staterooms.)

Here are the things you can bring but cannot be used on board. These items must be stored in your stateroom.

  • bicycles, skateboards, and surfboards
  • golf clubs, baseball bats, cricket bats, and hockey sticks

LUGGAGE CHECK-IN/BAG DROP

When I travel, I always have one hand-carried bag with me in addition to my large luggage. I put all my valuables, travel documents, personal hygiene kit, medication (for my hyperacidity), and an extra set of clothes in my hand-carried (carry-on) bag, then check in my other big luggage.

If you choose to check in your luggage, you need to put the Luggage Tag around the handle. Make sure to follow the instructions on how to fold the tag. You will find the tag in the Guest Ticket Booklet that you will receive upon booking. This is like the airline luggage tag. Its purpose is to ensure that your luggage won’t get lost during transfer. Checked-in bags and luggage are collected on Deck 2 for delivery.

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

If you don’t want to wait for your luggage to be delivered to your stateroom (which can last until 6 PM), you can bring it with you all throughout the embarkation process. You don’t need a luggage tag if you choose not to check in your bag.

Note: Only luggage with TSA-approved locks are allowed.

HOW TO CHECK IN?

Our port of embarkation was in Shanghai, so I can only share the checking-in process from this home port. Also, starting June 2019, the Spectrum of the Seas will be homeporting in Shanghai at one of the three international cruise terminals, the Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal (or Baoshan Cruise Terminal), which can accommodate two cruise ships at the same time: one berth for 100k tons and the other one for 200k tons.

Wusongkou Cruise Terminal Contact Information Address: No.01 Baoyang Road, Baoshan District, Shanghai Landline: 400-858-0655 Office Hour 9:00-17:00 Email: [email protected] Website: www.wskcruise.com
  • Check-in time is between 11AM and 3PM. BUT make sure to arrive at the port at least 60 minutes earlier than the published sail time.
  • Proceed to the luggage drop off area if you will check in your bags. Make sure you got your travel documents with you: passport, SetSail Pass, visa (if any), and other necessary documents for boarding. If you are not checking in your bags, just follow the signs leading to the long corridor. Aside from the directional signs, staff members will also tell or motion you which way to go.
  • Continue walking until you enter the terminal for Customs and security check.
  • When you pass the security check, you will be directed to the check-in hall located on the third (3rd) floor of the terminal building.
  • Proceed to the boarding area. Wait for the announcement.
  • When boarding starts, go to the immigration hall for departure clearance.
  • Go to the second floor and continue walking towards the ship’s entrance gates. The staff will collect your passport before you board the ship. You will get your passport back a day before you disembark. Note: Keep your SetSail Pass. You will need to present it upon collection.
  • Welcome aboard!

WHAT IS A SEAPASS CARD?

Your SeaPass card is your ticket to everything on board, so don’t ever lose it! You will receive it right before you enter the ship. It serves as your I.D., your stateroom key, and your wallet/credit card as purchases can only be made via this card. Keep it with you at all times. This is also the only way for you to get on and off the ship. The SeaPass card looks like this:

WHAT TO DO AFTER BOARDING?

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

So, you are finally onboard Spectrum of the Seas! Yay! If you board earlier than 2PM, you can feast on the wide array of gastronomic delights at Windjammer Marketplace located on Deck 14.

When you are finally settled in your stateroom, rest for a bit before heading to your designated Muster Station for the mandatory safety drill that ALL guests must attend. This is a standard operating procedure before leaving the port. Apart from this, the back of your stateroom door provides information pertinent to real emergency situations such as the location of your Muster Station and the proper use of a life jacket. Your stateroom television also has the onboard safety video.

VOOM: GETTING CONNECTED ON BOARD

The internet service provider of the Spectrum of the Seas is VOOM SURF, said to be the fastest internet at sea. Rates vary per ship and per internet package, but you will have a 30% discount when you purchase before the cruise. Here are the two internet package options:

  • Surf (Limited to surfing the web and accessing/receiving/sending emails)
  • Surf + Stream (Allows surfing the web, checking emails, doing video calls, social media platforms, and streaming)

You can go to the Internet Help Desk on Deck 4 or Dial 0 on your stateroom phone if you have any inquiries regarding your connection or how to get one.

WHERE TO EAT ON BOARD?

These are the seven (7) complimentary dining places on board. Dining at these food places incurs nothing as you already paid for it when you booked your ticket. Indulge. Eat all you can!

THINGS TO DO ON BOARD SPECTRUM OF THE SEA

Like its name, there’s a wide spectrum of things to do and try on board the Spectrum of the Seas. I guarantee that you will be swamped. The amenities and services cover all types of guests with different needs and interests. From physical to intellectual, from rowdy to chill, from buffet feast to fine dining, from oldies to kiddies, from tea and coffee to wine tasting, and so on. I had a grand time doing the things that appeal to me. Same with my friends. Here are some of the things to try while on a cruise.

One feature peculiar to the first Quantum Ultra class ship is the Skypad — a bungee trampoline with a virtual reality headset innovation. For some guests who want to try this but can’t put on the headset (visually-challenged and other possible reasons), they have the option to not wear it and just enjoy the trampoline part. The Mariner of the Seas of the Voyager class fleet and the Independence of the Seas of the Freedom class fleet have this feature too, but this feature was originally designed for the Spectrum of the Seas.

LOCATION: Deck 15, Aft Section

Notes: Age Restriction: 5 y/o to jump; 7 y/o to jump with VR headset Weight Restriction: 20-240 lb Reservation: Cruise Planner or registration counter

There’s no need to reserve. Just fall in line and wait for your turn. But if you want to secure your slot, you may reserve via Cruise Planner.

We don’t say “Hold my mic” but rather “That’s my song. Pass the mic!” Star Moment is a great venue to sing your heart out and just enjoy the time with friends and family. (Enter “Cruisin'” intro) Hey, that’s my song! Catch you later, guys! :p

Highlights of Spectrum of the Seas

Some of what you'll find on board Spectrum:

  • An all-suite complex, Royal Caribbean's first ever key-card access, private elevator, all-suite complex. It features a private swimming pool and a private restaurant for suite-class cruisers only.
  • The Ultimate Family Suite, which debuted on Symphony of the Seas in 2018, is a two-story, 1,134-square-foot playground for families. The suite offers a private 3D cinema, air hockey table, a slide from the kids-only bedroom to the living room, floor-to-ceiling Lego wall and a 212-square-foot wraparound balcony with a whirlpool, climbing wall and kid-friendly pool table.
  • Skypad, a top-deck virtual reality trampoline experience, which debuted on Independence of the Seas.
  • One large dining room, rather than the four, separate themed dining rooms which appear on previous Quantum Class ships.

This expansive area is complete with a private 3D cinema, climbing wall, air hockey table, floor-to-ceiling LEGO wall and even a kid-friendly pool table. Sure to be a highlight, is a slide from the kids-only bedroom down to the living room. This certainly is a great way to get them to come out of their room, you may only have to call them downstairs once! Adults will love the 212-square-foot wraparound balcony with a relaxing whirlpool and expansive views of wherever you are at any given moment.

With an impressive, and delicious choice of 30 plus dining venues, guests will indulge in innovative and diverse culinary options. Spice it up at Sichuan Red, which made her debut on the ship, serving authentic cuisine of the Sichuan province of China. Teppanyaki is THE place for classic Japanese teppan-cooked fare, Jamie’s Italian, Chops Grille and more favorites. Splashaway Café, right next to the kids pool, has the perfect ambiance and selections for your little ones, although, big ones will be quite happy here as well!  It’s entirely possible that you may not parler Français, but La Patisserie and its delicious treats only require that you bring your sweet tooth. The main dining room is an exquisite three-level dining room with Chinese and Western a la carte selections.

Spectrum of the Seas vs Odyssey of the Seas

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas cruise ship

The Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas was built in 2019. It's 2 years older than the Odyssey of the Seas , which was built in 2021.

Comparison Overview

Number of passengers, food and restaurants, bars and drinks, pools and hot tubs, ship features and activities, cruise costs, onboard costs.

The Spectrum of the Seas is considered a large size ship. Coming in at 1,139 feet long and 135 feet wide, it's roughly the length of 3.2 football fields, as wide as 2.5 tractor-trailers and the same height as a 14-story building. The Spectrum of the Seas and the Odyssey of the Seas are in the same class, which means they're sister ships. For the most part, they're similar in terms of size and layout; although they may have different features and attractions on board.

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas holds about the same number of passengers as the Odyssey of the Seas based on double occupancy (two people per room). When you look at the "Space Ratio," or tons of ship compared to number of passengers, the Spectrum of the Seas has the same amount of space per person as the Odyssey of the Seas.

Jamies Italian on the Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas

Food is a big part of any cruise, and the ship you choose can make a huge difference in your food experience.

The Spectrum of the Seas has 23 different dining options like Jamie's Italian , Two70 Cafe , and Chops Grille . Of those options, 11 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 11 options have an additional fee.

The Odyssey of the Seas has 2 fewer dining venues. Some of its popular venues are Chef's Table , Sorrento's Pizza , and Two70 Cafe . 11 of these restaurants are complementary and the other 10 have an additional fee.

The Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas has about the same number of dining options as the Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas.

Both ships have a similar number of paid versus included dining options.

Restaurants on Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas & Odyssey of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Vintages

The Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas has 3 fewer bars than the Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas.

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Both ships serve the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship. Most Royal Caribbean ships also have Coke Freestyle machines where you can make 100 different flavor combinations.

You can check out recent the bar menus for the Spectrum of the Seas and the Odyssey of the Seas below.

The main pool on Royal Caribbeans Spectrum of the Seas

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day for 7 days in a pool, a cruise isn't for you. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas has a total of 4 pools and 4 hot tubs. Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools are adults only. 1 of the pools are exclusive access, which means there's either an extra charge to access them or you need to book a certain class of cabin to have access to them.

The Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas has the same number of pools as the Spectrum of the Seas and more hot tubs.

Both ships have lots of activities to keep you busy throughout your cruise. Below you'll see a list of some of the major features on these ships. On the Spectrum of the Seas, 78% of the activities below are included in the cruise fare. On the Odyssey of the Seas, only 75% of the activities are included, meaning you might spend more money while on board.

Royal Caribbean is a mainstream cruise line. Mainstream cruise lines cater to a variety of guests, hoping to provide something for everyone. These typically cost about $100 - $350 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year. To get a good idea of how the pricing compares, visit Royal Caribbean's website to price out the separate cruises or consult a travel professional.

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Royal Caribbean ship.

Royal Caribbean uses dynamic pricing, which means the pricing for many things will vary per sailing. The daily gratuities and tip are consistent across the fleet, but the pricing for the drink package, internet, and excursions will change. The only way to know your price is to consult the Royal Caribbean cruise planner once you're booked.

Shanghai's reputation as a center of unrestrained commerce and intrigue has drawn adventures since the time of the Opium Wars. Modern Shanghai will surprise you with its sprawling landscape of towering offices, beautifully contrasted by calm lakes and graceful pagodas dating from the 10th century. Day 5: At Sea

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. These were my 8 favorite amenities on the world's largest cruise ship.

  • Royal Caribbean invited me to spend three complimentary nights on its new Icon of the Seas  in January.
  • My eight favorite amenities included the waterpark and jazz bar.
  • I've yet to see most of the amenities on my list on other cruise ships.

Insider Today

There's a reason Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship is only operating seven-night sailings .

The 1,196-foot-long, 20-deck Icon of the Seas is packed with bars, restaurants, and things to do. Any shorter of an itinerary, and you might not have time to experience all it has to offer.

If you're a frequent cruiser — especially with Royal Caribbean — amenities like the mini-golf course and water playground may not seem exciting.

But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel.

Take a look at what made the cut.

1. The six-slide waterpark

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

It wouldn't be a roundup of Icon of the Seas' best amenities without a mention of its waterpark.

Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft.

However, if you don't like the feeling of your stomach dropping, I'd advise skipping the 46-foot-tall drop slide.

2. The adult-only suspended infinity pool

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

The 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas has seven pools and nine hot tubs. As a kid-fearing adult, I loved the grown-ups-only suspended infinity pool.

I spent my time there perched at one of its in-water loungers, contently splashing my legs around the water, wondering if I actually hated cruises.

While I would've preferred a quieter atmosphere (the DJ did not, in fact, play smooth jazz), the pool's views, day beds, and lack of screaming children were hard to beat.

3. The Crown’s Edge thrill 'ride'

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

There's no need to grab coffee before harnessing up for the part-zipling, part-agility Crown's Edge course. You'll be jolted awake when the floor drops from beneath your feet, leaving you dangling 154 feet above the ocean before the zipline kicks in.

Unfortunately, it comes with two costs: $49 and a spike of anxiety.

4. The 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Aqua Action!' shows

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

If you hate cruise shows, Icon of the Seas could make you change your mind.

The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.

For something less traditional, the semi-circle AquaDome theater hosts a compelling multi-disciplinary swim, dive, and aerial show reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil.

It's the first show-at-sea I've seen with a waterfall and nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and so far, it's one of my favorites.

5. The live jazz bar

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

Ya like jazz? So do I.

Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues.

6. The customizable Mediterranean-style wrap at the five-stall food hall

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

The mega-ship's food hall wasn't nearly as diverse or exciting as the one on Norwegian Prima .

But compared to the rest of my mediocre meals on Icon of the Seas — including dinner at a specialty restaurant — my complimentary pork pita wrap from the food hall's Mediterranean-inspired stall was admittedly pretty decent.

The Cava -like meal was balanced, succulent, and filling. Ending it with a strawberry nutella crepe from one of the vendors didn't hurt either.

7. The Pearl Café with sweeping ocean views

royal caribbean cruise compass spectrum of the seas

Everyone takes a picture inside the Pearl . But few people know that the best part about the glittering structure isn't what's inside it — it's what's behind it: the Pearl Café.

Admittedly, the food wasn't standout.

But it's 2024. In this era, we don't dine for food. We dine for vibes . And the Pearl Café was definitely "serving" (even with its mediocre sandwiches).
