Obtaining your Letter of Invitation (LOI)

Sometimes called a Voucher or Visa Support Letter, this is a document you need before you can apply for your visa to Russia and can be obtained three months before you plan to enter the country. Intrepid works with a visa partner in Russia, Parallel 60, to provide the LOI for you.

You'll need to email our partner Parallel 60 at [email protected] , and provide the following information in the body of the email:

Departure code: (for example: WBSB220613)

First name:

Middle name(or second name – like in your passport):

Date of birth:

Passport number:

Citizenship:

Gender (Sex)

You’ll need to check carefully that all information entered is correct, ensuring there are no errors in spelling or passport numbers. Reprocessing the LOI if you have made an error, changed your travel plans or obtained a new passport may incur an additional fee. Errors may also mean your visa application might not be successful so be sure to double check all personal details submitted and received.

Once our partner has all necessary information required above, they will email you with an LOI within 48 working hours.

Your LOI will be issued in PDF format and you’ll need to save the LOI to your computer and make a record of the voucher ID number.

You’ll need to submit a printed copy of your LOI for your Russia visa application. Please note that Parallel 60 are unable to assist with any specific questions about your trip or your visa application. For these enquiries, please contact Intrepid Travel or your relevant Russian Consulate or Russian Visa Centre.

Applying for your Russian visa

Once you have your LOI, you can now apply for your visa. You must apply for your visa in advance. Visas are not available on arrival in Russia. It’s your responsibility to apply for your own visa, either directly through a Russian Consulate or Russia Visa Centre by using a visa agent. We do not recommend applying for your Russian visa outside of your home country or place of permanent residence, as your application may be not be accepted.

Your LOI issued by our partner consists of two parts:

VOUCHER (right side) – this confirms that you have advance hotel bookings in Russia, made on behalf of Intrepid Travel by Parallel 60, as well as the time period you will be allowed to stay in Russia. Don’t worry if these hotels and destinations do not reflect your itinerary exactly. These are for the purposes of obtaining the visa only, not an indication of where you must stay or travel in Russia. As long as the dates on the voucher are the same as or longer than your intended period of stay in Russia your visa will be valid for your trip.

CONFIRMATION LETTER (left side) – this confirms your personal details, as well as those of Parallel 60. This is the only information you should use to complete your visa application. There is no need to reference Intrepid Travel or include a copy of your Intrepid itinerary or voucher when you apply for your visa. Please ONLY state the destinations and hotels listed on your voucher, NOT those listed on your Intrepid itinerary, even if they are different. This is because for visa purposes Parallel 60 is the inviting party to Russia, not Intrepid Travel. The information on your application form MUST match the information on this Confirmation Letter exactly for your visa application to be successful.

Here’s a translation of your LOI to help you complete your visa application:

In addition to the LOI, you may need to include a photocopy of your passport, passport photos, copy of flight details or tickets to/from Russia, or other information. Please check with your Russian Consulate or Russian Visa Centre for specific requirements and contact us should you need further supporting information for your visa application.

Have a great time in Russia!

Who can visit Russia WITHOUT a VISA in 2023

A foreign tourist poses in front of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

A foreign tourist poses in front of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

Citizens of most of the post-Soviet states can visit Russia without a visa. Countries like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Although Ukraine is not a member of the CIS, it is included in this list, nonetheless. Notably, a Russian visa is required for citizens of Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, despite these states’ Soviet past.

The rules vary as to how long citizens of these countries can stay in Russia without filing additional paperwork with Russian migration authorities. For example, citizens of Belarus can stay in Russia for up to 90 days without registering with a police division which handles migrant-related affairs in Russia.

Citizens of Kazakhstan can stay in Russia for up to 90 days, but the law requires them to register with the police if they intend to stay in Russia longer than 30 days. For citizens of Tajikistan, this registration-free term is reduced to 15 days; for citizens of Moldova this term is even shorter and amounts to 7 days.

Citizens of the above-mentioned countries are allowed to prolong their stay in Russia for up to a year if they receive a work permit or come to study at a local university.

Up to 90 days

Citizens of several other countries are allowed to visit Russia without a visa and stay in the country for up to 90 days during every 180-day-long (6 months) period. Countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Israel, Nicaragua, Peru, Venezuela and South Africa fall into this category. However, their citizens are not allowed to work or engage in any commercial-related activities during their visa-free stay in the country.

Foreign travelers from these countries are required to register with the police within seven days of their arrival in Russia.

Do I need a Russian visa support/invitation letter?

A Russian visa support invitation, also known as a Visa Support, Confirmation letter, Invitation Letter, or Tourist Voucher, is a document required for the application process for a Russian visa. All travelers who need to go to the nearest Russian embassy to apply for it need this invitation letter because it is one of the required documents. To learn about the other requirements, we suggest that you call the embassy itself.

How to obtain a Russian visa support/invitation letter

If you choose to use the services provided by iVisa, you are going to experience a smooth application process. But first, you need to make sure that you have everything you need to get started. You must provide the following:

  • Passport – if you want to apply for a Russian invitation letter , you need to hold a passport that is valid for at least another 6 months from the date of arrival in Russia. Do not forget to check the expiry date before you apply.
  • Accommodation information – you need to have proof that you have a place to stay while in Russia. You do not have to book a hotel before you apply, but you need to be able to provide the accommodation information.
  • Established travel dates – if you do not know the exact travel dates, you need to be able to provide the closest approximation possible. You do not have to book a flight before you apply.
  • E-mail address – iVisa will send you the Russian invitation letter via e-mail in PDF format. You need to print it out in color before you take it to the consulate.
  • Means of payment – iVisa accepts multiple methods of payment so that you can use the one that is most convenient for you. Credit and debit cards are allowed, but you can use PayPal, Alipay, or WeChat as well.

After you notice that you have everything you need, you can move on and fill in the application form . That should not be difficult either, but if you need help, do not hesitate to contact iVisa’s customer support. The service is reachable non-stop and free of charge.

For your convenience, iVisa broke down the form into three simple steps. During the first one, you must provide your personal information, travel details, and passport information. You must also select a processing time and a visa type, both of which have an impact on your letter’s cost. When it comes to processing, you are presented with three choices:

  • Standard processing – your application is processed within 24 hours, and you are charged $30.
  • Rush processing – your invitation letter is ready within 12 hours, and you must pay $55.
  • Super Rush processing – you receive your Russian invitation letter in just 30 minutes, but you need to pay $80.

The prices above apply when you want a Tourist invitation letter with a single entry and a 30-day validity period. If you need two entries, the processing time as 24 hours, 6 hours, and 30 minutes, and the fees are $40, $65, and $90 respectively. For the Business Invitation letter , both the processing times and the costs are higher. Your document is ready in 5 business days, 3 business days, and 2 business days. The prices are $80, $105, and $130 respectively.

During the second step of the application form, you need to make the payment and revise your application to make sure you did not make any mistakes. The third step is when iVisa asks you to upload your form’s supporting documents. That is pretty much it. All that is left for you to do is submit your application and wait.

So, to answer your question, yes, you do need a Russian visa support/invitation letter if you plan to go to the nearest Russian embassy and apply for a visa. You do not need it if you are visa-exempt or you qualify for an electronic visa.

Russian Tours and Cruises from Express to Russia

  • Order Russian Visa Invitation

Express to Russia is a non-Government based service that is officially registered under the name OOO Express as a Russian tour operator and is authorized to issue Russian visa invitations (sometimes called a Russian visa voucher or Russian visa support), the document necessary for foreign travelers to apply for a Russian visa at their local Russian Consulate.

Russian tourist visa invitations are not issued directly by the Russian government but are rather issued by a qualified Russian tour operator that arranges tour programs and hotel accommodations in Russia. Russian visas can be applied for directly with the Russian Consulate using the official site of the Russian Foreign Ministry . Express to Russia also acts as an expeditor and agent between our customers and the Russian Consulates, delivering visa applications to the Russian Consulate on behalf of our clients. This service is available in many countries including USA, Canada, Australia, India, Indonesia, China, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, and Ireland. This can save our customers time and money by alleviating the necessity for our customers to travel to the Russian Consulate themselves and to wait in long lines to apply. Please see our  full visa support  page for more information.
