1. Flight Attendant

Average Base Salary: $39,077

Job Summary: A flight attendant is a trained individual who ensures the safety and comfort of passengers on an aircraft. They provide customer service, conduct safety demonstrations and respond to emergencies during flights.

Qualifications: Applicants are usually required to be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Successful completion of an airline-specific training program or orientation is necessary. This training is provided by the airline and covers aspects such as safety procedures, emergency protocols and customer service. Flight attendants must also be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration to work on each type of aircraft they serve on.

2. Airline Pilot

Average Base Salary: $108,544

Their duties include conducting pre-flight checks, developing flight plans, ensuring the safety and integrity of the aircraft and maintaining communication with the flight crew and air traffic controllers.

Qualifications: Airline pilots typically need a bachelor's degree, experience as a commercial or military pilot and must meet FAA requirements, including completing 250 flight hours with a pilot ground school. After you have passed your written ground school test and logged your hours, you will need to pass a check-ride with the FAA.

3. Management Consultant

Average Base Salary: $92,345

Job Summary: Management consultants work closely with domestic or international clients to provide business solutions to organizational issues involving maximizing business performance, business processes and revenue streams. A management consultant can offer expertise in a range of fields, such as business management, marketing, business strategy, supply chain and employee productivity.

Qualifications: Most employers require applicants to have completed, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in a business-related field, such as business administration, economics or finance.

Average Base Salary: $77,965

Job Summary: An auditor examines an organization's records, accounts and finances to ensure accuracy and compliance, as well as identify and mitigate risks. There are several disciplines within auditing, including financial; environmental, health and safety; external; internal; forensic and information technology. Because auditors attend frequent client meetings, they travel extensively to company sites, including internationally.

Qualifications: Similar to the education path of an accountant, aspiring auditors are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, like finance or business.

5. Tour Guide

Average Base Salary: $35,290

Job Summary: A tour guide leads visitors through historical sites, museums, geographic destinations or outdoor excursions, extolling relevant cultural, historical and practical knowledge.

Qualifications: Most tour guide jobs require at least the completion of a high school diploma, while some employers desire a four-year degree to lead a museum tour. Additionally, some states require you to obtain a tour guide license.

6. Pharmaceutical Sales Representative

Average Base Salary: $75,806

Job Summary: A pharmaceutical sales representative travels to different locations to sell pharmaceutical products and devices to healthcare professionals, such as doctors and nurses.

Qualifications: To become a pharmaceutical sales representative, most employers require at least a high school diploma or GED. Your qualifications will lie in your ability to build relationships and be persuasive.

7. Travel Nurse

Average Base Salary: $114,279

Job Summary: A travel nurse is a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse who works short-term contracts in various locations where healthcare facilities are understaffed. When contracts end, travel nurses either extend their stay at the same hospital or move on to a new location and opportunity.

Qualifications: Travel nurses must complete a state-approved nursing program, an associate degree in nursing or a B.S. in nursing to pursue licensure where they permanently reside. They must then pass the National Council Licensure Examination.

Typically, you cannot become a travel nurse right out of college, as clinical experience is generally required.

The Nurse Licensure Compact allows licensed RNs to practice legally in 39 participating states. If your location does not fall under the NLC, you must apply for state-specific licensure before you begin employment. Some states may fast track temporary licenses.

8. Construction Manager

Average Base Salary: $91,022

Job Summary: Construction managers oversee the development of buildings and infrastructure, managing tasks onsite, scheduling, budgeting and supervising projects from start to finish. Although they have a main office, construction managers travel to field offices on-site.

Qualifications: When hiring construction managers, most employers prefer they have a bachelor’s degree in construction science, construction management, architecture or civil engineering. However, it is possible to get hired with an associate degree in construction management or technology combined with relevant work experience in the field.

9. Professional Interpreter

Average Base Salary: $53,543

Job Summary: A professional interpreter enables communication between two or more parties who speak different languages. Interpreters can only render oral language, while translators specialize in written text. The most common areas of specialization include: conference, guide, media, public sector, medical and legal. Interpreters, especially liaison or escort interpreters, travel frequently to provide language support.

Qualifications: Professional interpreters are generally required to hold a bachelor's degree, while organizations like the United Nations recommend a master's degree. They should be highly proficient in at least two languages, including the source language (the language spoken by the interpreter) and the target language (the language in which they are interpreting).

10. Diplomat (Foreign Service Officer)

Average Base Salary: $97,246

Job Summary: The mission of a U.S. diplomat in the Foreign Service is to promote peace, support prosperity and protect American citizens while advancing U.S. interests abroad. American diplomats can be employed at any of the more than 270 international embassies or consulates.

Qualifications: While there is no specific academic degree or professional experience required to become an FSO, all applicants must undergo a rigorous hiring process. This consists of a written Foreign Service Officer test, a written personal narrative, an oral interview combined with role-playing exercises and a medical and security clearance review.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place.This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!

The procedure for receiving the work visa for foreign citizens

Obtaining a work visa for the foreign citizen is a multistage and long process. For example, it will take on the average 100 days and 15900 ₽ (only to pay the state fee) for the Company-employer registered in Moscow to hire a foreign worker. Since a work permit is valid maximum for 1 year, it is necessary to start processing a new work visa 6 months after receiving the current work visa.

Citizens of the CIS do not need a visa to enter Russia, and Work permit is issued for them in the simplified order for 10 working days and 4000 ₽ approximately.

Steps of the work visa getting procedure:

  • Annual electronic application for foreign manpower need submitted to the Migration quotas automated information system.
  • Placement of vacancy in the administration of Civil service of the employment of population.
  • Permission to involve the foreign labor force in the Migration police.
  • Work permit for foreigner (Plastic Card) in the Migration police.
  • Accreditation at the local department of the Migration police.
  • Work visa Invitation for foreigner.
  • Receiving a single-entry work visa for 90 days at the Russian Consulate.
  • Visa registration with the local department of the Migration police.
  • Notification of the beginning of work of a foreigner submitted to the Migration Police.
  • Re-issue of a single-entry work visa into a multiple-entry visa with the extension of its validity period.

Detailed description of stages for the Company registered in Moscow and hiring foreign citizen to work in Moscow:

  • Every year a Company is obliged to submit the application for foreign manpower need for the next year, so that the needs of the concrete company would be taken into account while the formation of quotas for the Russian Federation subjects and of all-Russian quota. Application includes a compulsory registration with the quick information center “Migration quota” at www.migrakvota.gov.ru . This rule does not apply to non-quota positions which list is renewed every year.

Required documents:

  • Application form (PDF file, 48 KB) about the assignment to the employer of the state service of assistance in the selection of the required workers (1 copy);
  • Information about the need of workers (PDF file, 50 KB), the presence of the unfilled vacancies (2 copies);
  • Certificate from the Russian Federal Tax Service of “State registration of legal entities” and the introduction of record into the United state list of legal entities (1 notarized copy);
  • Certificate from the Russian Federal Tax Service of “Registration of the legal entity with the Tax Authorities” (1 notarized copy);
  • Codes of statistics (1 notarized copy);
  • License to carry out activities (if needed) (1 notarized copy);
  • Power of attorney (PDF file, 52 KB) to the authorized representative to submit and obtain statements of the Administration of civil service of the employment of population (UGSZN) of Moscow (1 copy).
  • Conclusion of the Administration of civil service of the employment of population (UGSZN) of Moscow (copy with the assignment of the original);
  • Request to the Administration of civil service of the employment of population (UGSZN) (PDF file, 73 KB) (2 copies);
  • Application (PDF file, 44 KB) to the Migration police of Russia (3 copies);
  • Application form of the organization (PDF file, 37 KB) (1 copy);
  • Application (PDF file, 42 KB) to the Russian Migration police of Moscow (2 copies);
  • Project of a labour contract or other documents confirming the preliminary agreement with foreign citizens or foreign partners about intention and conditions of employment of foreign workers (1 copy, signed and stamped by the employer);
  • Certificate from the Russian Federal Tax Service of “The introduction of a record into the United state list of legal entities on the state registration of changes into the constitutive documents of a legal entity” (if changes were occurred) (2 notarized copies);
  • Certificate from the Russian Federal Tax Service of “The introduction of a record into the United state list of legal entities on the state registration of changes which are not connected with constitutive documents of legal entity” (if changes were occurred) (2 notarized copies);
  • Original of a billing document (stamped by bank) proving the payment of the state fee of 10000 ₽ for giving the company a “Permit to involve foreign labour force” for each foreign worker (properties).
  • Copy of a “Permit to involve foreign labour force” (with the presentation of the original);
  • Application (file PDF, 42 KB) to the Russian Migration police of Moscow (2 copies);
  • Warrant to the authorized representative (file PDF, 52 KB) for the right to supply and obtain a work permit (plastic card) (2 copies);
  • Application (file PDF, 102 KB) about issuing to foreign citizen or person without citizenship of work permit (1 copy);
  • Letter of guarantee (file PDF, 55 KB) for the return of foreign worker (1 copy);
  • Examination certificate for knowledge of Russian language;
  • Form A30 – about absence of disease of Hansen (leprosy);
  • Form A15-A19 – about absence of tuberculosis;
  • Form A50-A53.9, A55, A57 – about absence of sexually transmitted infections (syphilis, lymphogranuloma (venereal), chancre);
  • Form 086 – for the workers connected with physical labor;
  • about absence of addiction;
  • Notarized translation of passport of foreign citizen (1 copy);
  • Colored photo of foreign citizen on the mat paper – 2 pieces;
  • Copy of document with apostille about the vocational education with the translation into Russian (1 notarized copy); or a certificate of equivalency of such document to the Russian school certificate or diploma of professional education;
  • Original of billing document (stamped by bank) about the payment of the state duty of 3500 ₽ for obtaining a “work permit for a foreign citizen or a person without citizenship” (properties).

  • Extract from the “United state list of legal entities” (remoteness of an extract should not exceed one month; 1 notarized copy);
  • If the head (Director-General) is not Russian citizen, copies of Permit to involve foreign labour force and Work permit for foreign citizen (both notarized copies) are also required;
  • Non-residential Lease Agreement (in case of sublease, copies of sublease agreement and non-residential lease agreement should be presented; 1 notarized copy);
  • Certificate of “State registration of the property rights” of the non-residential premises (at owner of premises) occupied by organization (1 notarized copy);
  • Letter of guarantee (file PDF, 41 КB).
  • Organization Registration card in the Russian Migration police of Moscow;
  • Application letter for invitation (file PDF, 116 KB) for Russian visa (1 copy);
  • Letter of guarantee (file PDF, 45 KB) from organization (1 copy);
  • Copy of “permit to employ foreign workers” (Permission) (1 copy);
  • Copy of both sides of “Work permit of foreign citizen” (Plastic card) with the presentation of original;
  • Copy of the page of passport of foreign citizen, which contains photo and specifications (1 copy);
  • Copy of labor contract;
  • Receipt for state fee payment.
  • Application of foreign citizen to the Russian consulate with purpose of obtaining single work visa for 90 days.
  • Notification of the beginning of work of the foreign national in the organization. After obtaining a work permit and a work visa, signing a labor contract with a foreign worker (or extending the existing labor contract for the new period), the Company- employer is obligated to send the notification of conclusion of the employment agreement with a foreign worker to the Migration police of Moscow in 3 days. Similar notification should be sent in case of cancellation of an employment agreement with a foreign worker.
  • Registration of the work visa with the local department of the Migration police.
  • Notification of arrival (Visa registration) (file XLSX, 130 KB) of foreign citizen to the place of stay (1 copy);
  • Letter of guarantee (file PDF, 52 KB) from the inviting organization with the request to obtain a multiple entree work visa for foreign citizen (1 copy);
  • Application with request to obtain a multiple entree work visa (file PDF, 55 KB) from a foreign citizen (1 copy);
  • Passport copies of foreign citizen with the visa and migratory card, with the presentation of originals;
  • Two photos (colored, mat paper, size of 3×4);
  • Copy of “permit to employ foreign workers” (permission), with presentation of original;
  • Copy of “work permit of foreign citizen” (Plastic card), with presentation of original.
