The highest priority of the Bureau of Consular Affairs is to protect the lives and serve the interests of U.S. citizens abroad.  Across the globe, we serve our fellow citizens during some of their most important moments – births, adoptions, medical emergencies, deaths, arrests, and disasters.  We also help U.S. citizens connect with the world by issuing millions of U.S. passports each year.

We keep our country safe and help foreign nationals connect with the United States by issuing visas to qualified visitors, workers, and immigrants.  Led by the Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs, our team is proud to be the public face of the Department of State, representing the best of U.S. values to millions of people around the world.  We are here to serve you.

A U.S. passport is your ticket to international travel. The U.S. passport is a request to foreign governments to permit you to travel or temporarily reside in their territories and have access to lawful local aid and protection. The passport allows you access to U.S. consular services and assistance while abroad. Most importantly, it allows you to re-enter the United States upon your return home.

The Department of State issues U.S. passports to traveling U.S. citizens. We protect the integrity of the U.S. passport as proof of U.S. citizenship at home and around the world.

Passport Services consists of:

  • 26 regional p assport agencies and centers  open to the public
  • The Charleston Passport Center (n ot  open to the public)
  • 1 Special Issuance Agency
  • 2 passport printing centers
  • The  National Passport Information Center
  • A network of thousands of  public offices  across the United States designated to accept passport applications
  • Headquarters offices in Washington, DC

We also issue passports for U.S. citizens that apply at our embassies and consulates  abroad.

Passport Statistics

If you are interested in passport statistics, please visit our  Passport Statistics  page for information on:

Passport Services Mission Statement

The Department of State will issue secure travel documents to U.S. citizens while providing the highest level of customer service, professionalism, and integrity.

Service Standards

  • Provide service in a courteous, professional manner
  • Strive to meet your urgent travel needs
  • The right to speak with management if you are not satisfied with the service you have received

The Office of Visa Services, in the Consular Affairs Bureau, Department of State provides various functions:

  • We serve as liaisons with the Department of Homeland Security
  • We serve as liaisons between the Department of State and U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad on visa matters
  • We interpret visa laws and regulations, and act as a point of contact for the public.

When to Contact Us vs. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

Defining the different roles and responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State can be confusing. We hope this information will assist you: Contact the Department of State -  A U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad will be your resource for questions about U.S. visas, including the application process, the status of visa processing, and for inquiries relating to visa denial. Visa Services,  Public Inquiries  can usually explain what aspects of immigration law and regulation are applicable in certain cases, and can also check the current status of a particular case, if processing has been delayed. Contact the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)  - The  Department of Homeland Security  is responsible for the approval of all immigrant and nonimmigrant petitions, the authorization of permission to work in the United States, the issuance of extensions of stay, and change or adjustment of status while you are in the United States. Questions about these matters should be referred to DHS,  U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) .

The protection of U.S. citizens overseas is one of the Department of State’s highest priorities. We provide information designed to help U.S. citizens stay safe abroad, and U.S. Embassies and Consulates also provide emergency and non-emergency services to overseas U.S. citizens around the world.

We help U.S. citizens in the event of arrest, death, destitution, crisis, or medical emergency overseas. We respond to welfare and whereabouts inquiries, and deal with nationality and citizenship matters.

The Office of Children's Issues (CI), part of the Bureau of Consular Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, plays an active role in the intercountry adoption process. In our work, we are dedicated to assisting parents as they seek to provide a home to orphans abroad.

We carry out the Department of State's responsibilities as the U.S. Central Authority for the Hague Adoption Convention. The Office of Children's Issues is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and implementation of the Hague Adoption Convention in the United States.

The Office of Children's Issues (CI), part of the  Bureau of Consular Affairs at the U.S. Department of State , plays an active role in the intercountry adoption process. In our work, we are dedicated to assisting parents as they seek to provide a home to orphans abroad.

We serve as the U.S.  Central Authority  for the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. Also known as the  Hague Adoption Convention , this is an international treaty among over 90 nations around the world, including the United States. The Office of Children's Issues is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and implementation of the Convention in the United States.

We have 21 full-time employees that work in intercountry adoption. Some of our primary functions include:

  • Producing and maintaining country specific information about intercountry adoption;
  • Issuing Adoption Notices and Adoption Alerts to inform prospective adoptive parents about developments in a country;
  • Providing information about the adoption process to prospective adoptive parents, adoption service providers, and members of Congress;
  • Working with U.S. embassies and consulates on diplomatic efforts with host governments about adoption laws and procedures; and
  • Monitoring complaints against Hague accredited adoption service providers, and overseeing the work of designated accrediting entities.

The Department of State has no higher priority than to safeguard the welfare of U.S. citizens abroad, the most vulnerable of whom are children. We believe that a court in the country of a child’s habitual residence is, in most cases, best placed to make decisions on matters of custody and access.

The Office of Children’s Issues serves as the U.S. Central Authority for the Hague Abduction Convention (Convention), an international treaty that offers a civil remedy to resolve international parental child abduction cases.  In that capacity, the Office of Children’s Issues leads U.S. government efforts within the Department of State and with other U.S. government agencies to   prevent international parental child abduction, assist children and families involved in these abduction cases, and promote the principles of the Convention.

If You Believe an Abduction is in Progress:

If you believe your child is  being abducted internationally  by another family member and has not yet left the United States, you can call the Office of Children’s Issues at any time at 888-407-4747.

If Your Child Has Been Abducted Overseas, We Can:

  • Give you information about various resources that may assist you in pursuing the return of, or access to, your child,
  • Provide you with a list of attorneys in the country where your child is located,
  • Answer questions from local and federal law enforcement about the Department’s role in international parental child abduction cases, and
  • If your child has been abducted to or retained in a country that is a Convention partner country, regardless of you or your child’s citizenship or legal status, forward a completed Convention application, and monitor the case throughout the foreign administrative and legal processes.

If Your Child Has Been Abducted Overseas, We Cannot:

  • Provide you with legal advice, recommend a specific course of action, or represent you in court,
  • Guarantee the return of, or access to, your child,
  • Take custody of your child,
  • Break any laws in the United States or in a foreign country,
  • Pay legal fees, court costs, or any other fees associated with court cases, or
  • Provide you with lodging.

Putin to travel to Mongolia next week despite an ICC warrant for his arrest

The Kremlin says that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Mongolia next week despite the country being a member of the International Criminal Court

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Mongolia next week, the Kremlin said Thursday, despite the country being a member of the International Criminal Court, which last year issued a warrant for his arrest.

The visit, scheduled for Sept. 3, will be Putin's first trip to an ICC member state since the warrant was issued in March 2023 over suspected war crimes in Ukraine.

Under the court’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute, ICC members are bound to detain suspects for whom an arrest warrant has been issued by the court, if they set foot on their soil.

But the court doesn't have any enforcement mechanism. In a famous case, then Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir wasn't arrested in 2015 when he visited South Africa , which is a member of the court, sparking angry condemnation by rights activists and the country’s main opposition party.

The Kremlin, which had previously stressed that it doesn't recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC, didn't comment on the prospects of Putin being arrested in Mongolia.

According to the Kremlin's online statement, Putin will travel to Mongolia upon the invitation of President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh “to participate in the ceremonial events dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the joint victory of the Soviet and Mongolian armed forces over the Japanese militarists on the Khalkhin Gol River.” Putin will also hold talks with Khurelsukh and other top Mongolian officials, the statement read.

The ICC has accused Putin of personal responsibility for the abductions of children from Ukraine , where Moscow has fought a devastating war for the last 2½ years.

It was the first time the global court has issued a warrant against a leader of one of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. The ICC said in a statement that Putin “is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of (children) and that of unlawful transfer of (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”

The Kremlin has dismissed the warrant as “null and void.”

Putin hasn't traveled to ICC member states ever since. Putin skipped a summit of the BRICS bloc of developing economies last year in South Africa.

South Africa lobbied Moscow for months for Putin not to attend to avoid the diplomatic fallout since the country is an ICC member, and ultimately announced the countries had reached a “mutual agreement” that Putin not attend a meeting he's normally a fixture at. The Kremlin said that Putin had decided not to attend in person. He instead took part in the summit in Johannesburg by video link, during which he launched a tirade against the West.

Last, year, the Kremlin also bristled at old ally Armenia over its decision to join the ICC , adding to the growing tensions between Moscow and Yerevan. Armenian officials, however, quickly sought to assure Russia that Putin wouldn't be arrested if he entered the country.

Travel TV Star Rick Steves Shares Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Pbs host rick steves shared he has prostate cancer and will embark on a new “journey”—this time for his health—after nearly 30 years of travel expertise..

Travel expert Rick Steves shared he is setting off on a new “journey” in response to a cancer diagnosis.

The PBS TV host explained on social media that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but he is “looking forward to many more years of happy travels.”

“My doctor assures me that, if you’re going to get cancer, this is a good kind to get, and careful scans show no sign of it having spread,” the 69-year-old wrote in a post to Facebook , X and Instagram on Aug. 21. “There is a clear path forward to getting healthy, and this fall, I’ll be in the hospital for a few days having prostate surgery.”

The diagnosis doesn’t seem to be slowing the travel writer down, as he explained he will be filming two TV shows in France over the course of the next few weeks prior to his surgery.

“I’ll likely get my surgery in late September,” he continued, “be laid up for a month, and—God willing—be cancer-free and back at it by the end of October.”

And in the meantime, Steves has made it clear he is in good spirits, even including a picture of him walking on a sunny mountainside with the words “Be thankful.”

“I’ve been fortunate to have never spent a night in a hospital,” he explained. “I find myself going into this adventure almost like it’s some amazing, really important trip. I feel good about my positive attitude.”

And the Rick Steves’ Europe star—who has hosted multiple travel-focused television series and specials for nearly 30 years—is looking forward to adding to his memorabilia collection, albeit in a less physical way.

“I expect to take home some delightful, if intangible, souvenirs,” he shared, “like: appreciating and seeing a vibrancy in the little things; appreciating the goodness in people and the treasure of friends and family; being wowed by modern medicine and the army of amazing, smart, and dedicated people that make it possible; appreciating what a blessing life, health, and this world to enjoy is; and—just in general—being more thankful.”

As the travel host rounded out his announcement, he ended with a sentiment tinged with the signature voice of Rick Steves.

“Thank you for your love and support,” he wrote. “And any ‘travel tips’ you may have for me as I set off on this journey.”

Russia Travel Advisory

Travel advisory june 27, 2024, russia - level 4: do not travel.

Reissued after periodic review with minor edits.

Do not travel to Russia due to the consequences of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces. U.S. citizens may face harassment or detention by Russian security officials, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, limited flights into and out of Russia, and the possibility of terrorism. The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia. The Department has determined that there is a continued risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals by Russian authorities. U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Russia should leave immediately.

The U.S. government has limited ability to help U.S. citizens in Russia, especially outside of Moscow. The U.S. Embassy is operating with reduced staffing, and the Russian government has restricted travel for embassy personnel. Furthermore, all U.S. consulates in Russia have suspended operations, including consular services.

There have been reports of drone attacks and explosions near the border with Ukraine as well as in Moscow, Kazan, and St. Petersburg. In an emergency, you should follow instructions from local authorities and seek shelter.

Russia may refuse to recognize your U.S. citizenship if you are a dual U.S.-Russian citizen or have a claim to Russian citizenship. Russia has denied consular officers visits to detained dual U.S.-Russian citizens. The Russian government has forced citizens with dual nationality to join the Russian military and prevented them from leaving the country. In 2022, the Russian government mobilized citizens for its invasion of Ukraine. Military conscription continues.

In Russia, the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech are not always protected. U.S. citizens should avoid protests and taking photos of security staff at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who joined protests. Moreover, there are many reports of Russians being detained for social media posts.

U.S. citizens should know that U.S. credit and debit cards no longer work in Russia. Due to sanctions, sending electronic money transfers from the U.S. to Russia is nearly impossible.

Commercial flight options are minimal and are often unavailable on short notice. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements. The U.S. Embassy has limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in leaving the country, and transportation options may suddenly become even more restricted.

Click  here  for Information for U.S. Citizens Seeking to Depart Russia.

U.S. Embassy staff generally are not allowed to fly on Russian airlines due to safety concerns. Recently, the FAA downgraded Russia's air safety rating from Category 1 to Category 2. Additionally, the FAA banned U.S. flights in some Russian areas, including the Moscow Flight Information Region (FIR), the Samara FIR (UWWW), and the Rostov-na-Donu (URRV) FIR within 160NM of the boundaries of the Dnipro (UKDV) Flight Information Regions. Check the FAA's Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Notices for more information.

Country Summary:

Russian officials have interrogated and threatened U.S. citizens without cause. This includes former and current U.S. government and military personnel and private U.S. citizens engaged in business. U.S. citizens may become victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion.

Russian authorities may not notify the U.S. Embassy about the detention of a U.S. citizen and may delay U.S. consular assistance. Russian security services also target foreign and international organizations they consider “undesirable.”

Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on false charges, denied them fair treatment, and convicted them without credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities have opened questionable investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Russia.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has destabilized security in southwestern Russia. In October 2022, the Russian government declared martial law in the following border areas with Ukraine: Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, and Krasnodar. Under martial law, authorities can set curfews, seize property, and restrict movement. The Russian government may detain foreigners, forcibly relocate residents, and limit public gatherings. U.S. citizens should avoid all travel to these areas.

Russian authorities have questioned, detained, and arrested people for “acting against Russia's interests.” Local authorities have targeted people for posting on social media or supporting "anti-Russian" groups and punished individuals for criticizing the government or military. The Russian government's current "LGBT propaganda" law bans discussion of LGBTQI+ related topics. In November 2023, the Supreme Court labeled the so-called "international LGBT movement" as extremist. This decision effectively made it a crime to support the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons in Russia.

Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Russia. The March 2024 Crocus City Hall incident proved they can strike suddenly. Terrorists may target tourist areas, transport hubs, and markets. They may also target government buildings, hotels, clubs, restaurants, and places of worship. Parks, events, schools, and airports are also potential targets.  U.S. government employees under Embassy (Chief of Mission) security responsibility are not permitted to travel to the North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mt. Elbrus. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to those areas.

The international community does not recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and does not acknowledge Russia’s purported annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. Russia staged its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in part, from occupied Crimea and there is a heavy Russian military presence in these areas. There is intense fighting across these regions and Russian authorities there have abused both foreigners and locals. Authorities have specifically targeted individuals who are seen as challenging Russia’s authority.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv administers consular services to U.S. citizens in Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya. However, the conflict limits the Embassy's ability to help U.S. citizens in these areas.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Russia.

If you decide to travel to Russia:

  • Read the information on what the U.S. government can and cannot do to assist you in an emergency overseas .
  • Consider the risks involved in having dual U.S.- Russian nationality.
  • Have a contingency plan in place that does not rely on U.S. government help. Review the Traveler’s Checklist .
  • Follow news for any important events and update your plans based on the new information.
  • Ensure travel documents are valid and easily accessible.

  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This will allow you to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

Why this teacher eats lunch with his students in the cafeteria every day

Dan Shutes

When the school bell rings for lunch, you won’t find 5th grade teacher Dan Shutes eating with colleagues or grading papers — he’s sitting at the lunch table with his students.

“We talk about movies or music and laugh,” Shutes, 32, an elementary school teacher in Michigan, tells TODAY.com .

Shutes, who teaches at the Paw Paw Public School District, shared why in a TikTok video posted to his 1.8 million followers.

“So, I eat lunch in the cafeteria almost every single day,” he said. “I know what some of you are thinking — ‘what about your prep time? What about your planning? Do you get anything done? Are you crazy?’ I get it,” Shutes said in the video. “I know I can grade papers, I know I can check my email. I know I can eat my food in the peace and quiet. I get all that, but it’s the beginning of the year so it’s really not that big a deal.”

Shutes added, “In the eight years of doing this, this is the most effective thing that I have to get to know my students on a personal level. Way more effective than the ‘all about me’ activities, which I still give some of those — they’re dope, don’t get me wrong. But this is way more effective.”

The teacher shared what happened during lunch period that day.

“I sat down next to a couple of my new kids. Instantly, two or three more down the table were like, ‘Hey, can you eat lunch with me tomorrow? Can you sit with me the next day?’ and I said, ‘Absolutely, mark me down.’ Because we can all agree that in this job ... the single most important thing we can do is build a relationship with every single kid that walks in the door. We can’t do our job without it.”

Shutes tells TODAY.com why he chooses lunch period to enrich his relationships with students.

“There’s definitely a more natural version of each kid ... because it’s not scripted (time),” says Shutes. “There are rules and expectations in the cafeteria but ... it’s an organized freedom.”

Every day, Shutes plops down at a student lunch table with his bagged lunch — or stands in line with the kids when the menu has children nuggets — and asks them about their siblings, hobbies and the latest in music or sports. As Shutes calls it, “normal kid conversations.”

“There is always a Q&A session going on when I eat lunch with the kids,” he says. “They want to know more about me as a person, a college athlete, what it was like when I was a kid and who’s cooler — me or my twin brother.”

Sometimes Shutes lingers for recess, which follows lunch.

“I like to peek at who my students are hanging out with — are they friends with kids in their class or other classes? Are they sitting by themselves?” he says.

If Shutes sees a child that looks lonely, he makes a mental note to check in.

“I might say, ‘How’s it going, what’s going on at recess? I saw you out there by yourself,’” he says. “It allows me to get more information like maybe they preferred to be alone or they got excluded or they’re trying to make friends and it’s not going well.”

Shutes adds, “(Teachers) know about the students academically — which is important — but I like figuring out where they struggle socially so we can get ahead of classroom drama or friendship issues.”

According to Shutes, even if teachers aren’t eating with students, they often compare notes on kids so everyone is in the know.

“I believe the vast majority of teachers’ hearts are in the right place ... and take relationships with their students very seriously,” says Shutes. “My advice to parents to put their minds at ease: Trust your child’s teacher and if your child has concerns, approach the teacher rather than jumping to conclusions.”

Eating lunch with his students also makes Shutes feel young: “I feel like I’m 32 going on 14.”

Biden plans to travel to Wisconsin next week to highlight energy policies and efforts to lower costs

his travel

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden plans to travel to southwest Wisconsin on Sept. 5, using a visit focused on small towns and rural areas to highlight his policies to lower costs and encourage renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

That’s according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the president’s schedule.

Democrats consider Wisconsin to be one of the must-win states in November’s presidential election between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris . Biden won the state in 2020 by about 20,000 votes, flipping Wisconsin to the Democratic column after Trump narrowly won it in 2016.

Biden is stepping up his public events after bowing out of the race and endorsing his vice president. Harris and Biden plan to be in Pittsburgh as part of the Labor Day holiday.

In 2020, AP VoteCast, a survey of the electorate, found that nearly half of Wisconsin voters hailed from small towns and rural areas. Of that subset, nearly 6 in 10 backed Trump. But Democrats could improve their odds of winning the state this year if they can reduce the gap.

Biden plans to stress the policies that were part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.

The law had little immediate impact on the inflation that hurt Biden’s popularity, but it was designed to save Medicare recipients money on insulin and allow the government to negotiate on prescription drug prices. It also included incentives for a shift to renewable energy and funding for the IRS to ensure it can collect more of what affluent and wealthier taxpayers owe.

PGA Tour: Scottie Scheffler builds big lead over Xander Schauffele at season-ending Tour Championship

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler seven clear of Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa at the Tour Championship; Scheffler looking to win the FedExCup for the first time; watch throughout the week live on Sky Sports Golf

Scottie Scheffler made a dream start to his bid for a maiden FedExCup victory after surging into a seven-shot lead following the opening round of the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship.

The world No 1 has already won six times on the PGA Tour this season and arrived at East Lake with a two-shot cushion over closest challenger Xander Schauffele, with Scheffler recovering from a bogey start to take early control of the tournament.

Scheffler fired seven birdies - including five in his last seven holes - to close a round-of-the-day 65 and jump to 16 under, making the 28-year-old the overwhelming favourite to win the season finale and claim the $25m jackpot.

Schauffele's one-under 70 leaves him tied-second alongside Collin Morikawa, who started his back nine with six consecutive birdies, with Hideki Matsuyama and Keegan Bradley - the winners of the first two Playoff events - in the group sharing fourth on eight under.

How Scheffler set the pace at East Lake

Scheffler's two-shot pre-tournament advantage temporarily disappeared at the par-four first, where he failed to get up and down from short of the green to save par and Schauffele holed an eight-foot birdie to move to nine under.

The FedExCup leader edged back ahead with a close-range birdie at the third but missed a chance from inside 10 feet to double his cushion at the fifth, allowing Schauffele to pull back level when he set up a close-range birdie at the par-five sixth.

Scheffler responded by rolling in a 35-footer at the seventh to regain the solo advantage and reach the turn one ahead, although he only stayed in front when Schauffele squandered an eight-foot birdie opportunity at the par-four 10th.

Schauffele failed to convert from six feet to save par at the 11th and quickly fell further behind, as Scheffler posted back-to-back birdies from the 12th to jump to 13 under and four clear of the field.

Scheffler missed his eagle attempt from 20 feet at the par-five 14th but tapped in for a third straight birdie, as Schauffele holed from 15 feet to also pick up a shot before bogeying the 16th to drop five strokes adrift.

The lead increased further when Scheffler added a 15-foot birdie at the par-four 17th, before a brilliant up and down from the greenside bunker saw him take advantage of par-five last and build the biggest opening-round lead since starting strokes were implemented at the Tour Championship in 2019.

"Yeah, I'm pleased with the day," Scheffler told Sky Sports . "I tried not to think about any sort of lead or anything like that, my job was to go out there and execute and I felt like I did a really good job of that. I felt like I was doing some good stuff to start the day. I had the bogey on one but after that I felt like I played some really good golf."

Schauffele mixed three birdies with two bogeys in a frustrating opening round, with Morikawa's 66 initially equalling the lowest score of the day until Scheffler's late birdie run.

Live PGA Tour Golf

Matsuyama and Bradley are joined eight back by Adam Scott, Sam Burns and Wyndham Clark, with Sahith Theegala jumping to ninth after five birdies in the last six holes.

Rory McIlroy's bid for record fourth FedExCup victory required three birdies in the last five holes to salvage a two-under 69, leaving him 10 strokes back, with defending champion Viktor Hovland on four under and tied-20th despite making seven birdies in his opening-round 69.

Pope breaks from regular catechesis, makes impassioned call to improve migrants’ safety in travel

his travel

a katz / Shutterstock.com

CV NEWS FEED // In his August 28 General Audience, Pope Francis broke from his regular catechesis and spoke on the importance of providing refuge and help for migrants.

“I would like to pause with you to think about the people who – even at this moment – are crossing seas and deserts to reach a land where they can live in peace and safety,” the Pope said, according to an English translation of the text published by the Vatican Press Office.

Deserts and seas on migratory routes are often deadly to those crossing, he said. The Mediterranean and some deserts are becoming, or already, “cemeteries,” and many of those deaths are often preventable. Sometimes migrants are even abandoned in deserts.

“It must be said clearly: there are those who work systematically and with every means possible to repel migrants – to repel migrants. And this, when done with awareness and responsibility, is a grave sin,” he said:

Let us not forget what the Bible tells us: “You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him” (Ex 22:21). The orphan, the widow and the stranger are the quintessential poor whom God always defends and asks to be defended.

The Pope’s remarks come amid a standoff between Italian bishops and the country’s government regarding immigration. Italian conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has supported more restrictive measures related to migration to Italy, according to a 2023 report from Politico. From 2022 to 2023, the number of migrants to Italy increased by 50%, according to a report from Etias.com.

The Daily Compass reported on August 27 that the Italian Episcopal Conference recently financed a sailboat traveling with another ship manned by members of Mediterranea Saving Humans, who “have returned to the sea in search of illegal migrants to rescue and bring back to Italy.”

Pope Francis said in his General Audience there are “many good people who are there on the front line” with Mediterranea and other organizations. He commended those around the world who strive to help save and rescue migrants who are injured and abandoned.

“These courageous men and women are a sign of a humanity that does not allow itself to be contaminated by the malign culture of indifference and rejection – it is our indifference and that attitude of rejection that kills migrants,” he said.

Pope Francis cited Scripture multiple times in the address, including a verse from Psalm 136:16 that tells of how God “led His people through the wilderness.”

These words communicate that God accompanies migrants, “suffers with them… weeps and hopes with them….” Pope Francis said.

“It will be good for us today: the Lord is with our migrants in the mare nostrum , the Lord is with them, not with those who repel them,” he added.

The solution to preventing migrants from crossing deadly deserts and seas isn’t more restrictive laws or the “militarization of borders,” he said.

“Instead, we will obtain it by extending safe and legal access routes for migrants, providing refuge for those who [flee] from war, violence, persecution and various disasters; we will obtain it by promoting in every way a global governance of migration based on justice, fraternity and solidarity,” he said, adding:

And by joining forces to combat human trafficking, to stop the criminal traffickers who mercilessly exploit the misery of others.

The Pope encouraged people who are unable to directly help migrants to pray.

Barry Williams Takes His Daughter on a Nostalgic 'Back Alley' Tour of the Iconic Brady Bunch Set

The 69-year-old gave his young daughter a backstage tour

his travel

Barry Williams/Instagram

The Brady Bunch ’s Barry Williams recently took a trip down memory lane, showing off the studio where the beloved ’70s sitcom was filmed to his own 12-year-old daughter.

The sweet backstage tour took place back in July, with Williams, 69, sharing a video via his official Instagram account ( watch it here ).

Of course, the iconic Brady house set at Paramount Television’s Stage 5 is long gone — the show ended in 1974. But Williams, who starred as oldest Brady sibling Greg, gave daughter Samantha, as well as his Instagram followers, a peek at a backstage hallway he referred to as “the back alley.”

Courtesy Everett Collection

“It’s a little different because we used to have pictures of all our fans along these walls here,” he explained. “Thousands of letters on these walls. It was like wallpaper.”

Williams also pointed out a sign on a nearby door warning people not to enter when a red light is on.

“See where it says ‘closed set’?” he said. “We never had closed set.”

But, Williams explained, the show’s young stars used the “back alley” hallway to get to their classrooms.

“Here was a classroom,” he noted, indicating a door across the hall, “And it was just me and Maureen McCormick (Marcia) — that was high school. And then this next room was for the little kids.”

This wasn’t the first time Williams revisited the Brady house. While the show’s interior sets are gone, the real Harry M. Londelius Jr.-built house used for exterior shots on the show still stands in L.A.’s Studio City neighborhood, and was the subject of a 2019 HGTV reality show, A Very Brady Renovation . Williams, McCormick and their TV siblings Christopher Knight , Eve Plumb , Mike Lookinland and Susan Olsen all appeared on the series, helping HGTV stars Jonathan and Drew Scott , Mina Starsiak , Lara Spencer and others refurbish the house to look exactly like the show’s famous sets.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

“It is very nostalgic,” Williams told PEOPLE of the finished product back in 2019. “I felt like a teenager walking in. The memories keep flooding in — episodes, scenes, what happened and what transpired. As Maureen pointed out, we can feel the presence of [deceased costars] Robert [Reed] , Florence [Henderson] and Annie [B. Davis] there with us. Maybe they’re seeing it. It’ll be nice for them to enjoy it too.”

More recently, Williams appeared on the 32nd season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars late last year. Though he was eliminated from the competition on Nov. 14, the Brady Bunch alumnus told PEOPLE that he “loved every minute” of his time on the show.
