Best Bollywood Travel Movies of All Time

#1 zindagi na milegi dobara (2011).

This one’s my all-time favorite. I’ve watched it like 10 times or more (actually I’ve lost count). I never get tired of it. It’s that amazing. So we will have to begin our list of Best Indian travel movies with this film.

3 best friends. 1 EPIC road trip. All things awesome!

ZNMD is about three friends who set on a bachelor’s trip to Spain (which they had planned during their college) to overcome their fears. They inspire the viewers to plan a Spanish vacation as they road-tripped from Barcelona to Costa Brava to Seville to Buñol to Pamplona enjoying the famous La Tomatina Festival and taking on adventures like deep-sea diving, skydiving, and a bull run along the way.

I added the ultimate road trip through Spain to my Europe bucket list before even the movie was finished. The movie has all the ingredients to revive the traveler in you. This is one of the inviting Bollywood road trip movies that will want you to pack your bags and head off.

There are a few movies that make you fall in love with your life, and ZNMD is one of those!

indian road trip film

#2 Queen (2013)

Queen inspires all the girls out there to drop their fears, take a call, and travel solo at least once in their lifetime. The movie is about a girl who embarks on a solo trip to Paris which was supposed to be her honeymoon trip.

Rani, the main protagonist falls in love with herself while wandering around the gorgeous streets of Paris and Amsterdam . The movie beautifully redefined the concept of solo travel. The journeys we take by ourselves are the journeys we take into ourselves, indeed.

indian road trip film

#3 Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

This is the movie that I watched with my best friends and yes we were living the movie while watching it. This for sure remains one of the best travel movies in Bollywood. Any youngster who watches this movie can’t help but crave to take a road trip to Goa with friends. With a beautiful storyline of how three friends discover the beauty of their friendship and life while on a trip to Goa, the movie set a record.

Dil Chahta Hai features quaint beach towns, golden-sand beaches, palm-fringed coastlines, back-country spice farms, quintessential churches and forts, and mouth-watering Goa Cuisine. This movie has contributed a lot to tourism in Goa. The movie also showcases the iconic city of Sydney, Australia .

indian road trip film

#4 Swades (2004)

All the NRI (Non-Resident Indians) would be able to relate to the movie Swades which will make them teary-eyed. It is a movie about an NRI played by Shahrukh Khan, who works in NASA and comes to India to discover his roots. He wants to take his nanny to the US along with him.

He takes on the journey on a luxury caravan that he rides and takes through rustic rural India and shows the warmth of people. It showcases the beautiful and vibrant culture of India and the value system that we believe in.

This movie would surely be nostalgic for many living far away from their homeland and remaining in the dilemma of returning back.

indian road trip film

#5 Highway (2014)

Imtiaz Ali never fails to charm his viewers. The Highway is a film about a girl who’s kidnapped and put in a truck that travels to Kashmir via Delhi , Punjab , Haryana , Rajasthan , and Himachal Pradesh . The movie beautifully brings out the beauty of freedom through this Bollywood road trip movie.

The snow-clad mountains, crystal-clear rivers, lush green landscape, tiny hamlets of Pahalgam , Aru Valley , Spiti , and the highways of North India – the movie captures the essence of travel in India.

indian road trip film

Another gem from Imtiaz Ali. Tamasha transports you to the beautiful French island of Corsica .

From Turquoise blue waters and stunning bays, to rugged peaks, gorgeous landscapes, medieval charm, and everything in between, the movie captures Corsica in a way that this breathtaking island becomes your bucket list destination.

indian road trip film

#7 Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007)

The trip changed their lives forever.

indian road trip film

#8 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

DDLJ, a directorial debut by Aditya Chopra, made me fall in love with the Swiss Alps and has been a dream destination that I wish to visit with my husband.

The story revolves around the love story of a boy and girl, both NRI living in London who meet on a vacation in Europe with their friends. They both travel on the Eurostar with their friends to exotic locations of Zweissimen , Gstaad , Jungfrau , and Interlaken .

This is one film that even lists 1001 movies that you must watch before you die. Can you believe the movie ran in a theater in Maharashtra for more than 20 years?

So how can this movie not be a part of the Best Bollywood travel movies?

indian road trip film

#9 Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)

This movie made me fall in love with cruise trips. Ayesha plans a 10-day cruise sailing through Turkey , Tunisia , Egypt , Spain , Italy , and France to celebrate her parent’s anniversary and the trip connects the dysfunctional family through a series of experiences.

It’s so exciting to see the characters exploring a new country every day! Being on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean can be insanely gorgeous and intensely cathartic. The visuals are inspiring and capture the essence of each country – the vibe and the culture.

indian road trip film

#10 Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

The movie charms its viewers with the adorable characters of Naina and Bunny, the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir , and the royal vibe of Rajasthan .

The first half of the movie showcases the characters enjoying hiking the snow-covered Himalayas and the second half takes you through the magnificent forts and palaces of Rajasthan.

It gives some serious destination wedding goals. They can be so much fun. The movie has that feel-good factor. It beautifully motivates people to take time to travel and spend time with friends.

These Hindi movies on travel are here to give you some serious travel goals.

indian road trip film

#11 Jab We Met (2007)

This is another movie I never get tired of watching. With an engaging storyline, incredible actors, and a mind-boggling and life-changing journey through various cities and towns ( Ratlam , Kota , Bhatinda , Manali , and Shimla ) in India by different modes like a train, bus, rickshaw, cycle, jeep, and even truck, Jab We Met is a delight for eyes as well as the soul.

I took a trip to Rohtang Pass after seeing the snowy landscapes and a narrow road with snowy walls on either side of Rohtang Pass in Jab We Met. Such road trip movies in Bollywood do inspire you to add them to your bucket list. The two protagonists, Geet and Aditya look so adorable together that you can’t get enough of them.

I realized that trips that don’t have a plan and are spontaneous can be so much fun(risky though but hey life’s all about taking risks). Sometimes, it’s good to have no plan 🙂

indian road trip film

#12 Piku (2015)

With a tale of a complicated yet beautiful father-daughter relationship, Piku touches hearts. The movie is set in the capital city of India. The road trip from Delhi to Kolkata en route to the spiritual city of Varanasi is the soul of the movie.

The trip brings out the differences between the lead actors (father and daughter) eventually bonding them by the end of the journey.

The quaint charm of Varanasi and the old-world charm of Kolkata will tickle the traveler in you.

indian road trip film

You are sure to be charmed by the heartfelt story and stunning locations as Barfi, the protagonist cycles through Darjeeling’s charming streets featuring rolling tea estates, lush green forests, and mist-covered peaks.

The Clock Tower, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and Glenary’s Cafe are some of the most famous landmarks of Darjeeling featured in the movie. In the second half of the movie, the city of Joy – Kolkata and its colonial charm make your heart flutter.

indian road trip film

#16 London Paris New York (2012)

It’s a tale of two characters and the world’s three iconic cities – London , Paris , and New York . The movie unfurls a love story between the two of them as they meet, separate, and reunite while traveling through these three cities.

The film didn’t do well but truly captures the beauty of the cities that invariably find a place on every traveler’s list.

indian road trip film

Chalo Dilli is about two contrasting characters who travel together on a road trip from Mumbai to Delhi to explore the colors and cultures of India’s rural and urban towns.

indian road trip film

#18 3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots played a vital role in making Leh Ladakh a popular destination. The climax of the movie features an unusually beautiful Himalayan lake – Pangong Tso that stretches between India and China. The lake instantly became a hot destination after the release of the movie. Otherwise, the offbeat location turned into one of the most touristy places in India. These are the after-effects of the best Indian travel movies.

The local eateries, restaurants, hotels, camps, and lodges mushroomed along the banks of the lake and amusingly most of them are named after the movie or its characters’ names.

Some of the parts of the movie are shot in Druk White Lotus School in Leh which is now also known as ‘Rancho School.’ Rancho is the name of the main protagonist in the movie.

The awe-inspiring landscapes of South India will urge you to travel to this beautiful part of India.

indian road trip film

It’s the story of a girl who loses her engagement ring on a trip, takes the help of a tour guide to search for the ring, and eventually falls for him.

In a light-hearted movie, Hum Tum travels to the amazing destinations of Delhi , Amsterdam , USA , Paris , and Mumbai as the two main characters, Karan and Rhea (unknowingly and unwantedly) bump into each other at different intervals in their lives.

I have been dying to visit Amsterdam since the time I watched Hum Tum. Doesn’t this happen to you when you watch Bollywood movies on travel?

indian road trip film

#22 Jagga Jasoos (2017)

The film is about a curious boy who embarks on an expedition to search for his lost father and meets the love of his life along the journey.

The movie starts in a beautiful hill station in West Bengal, Darjeeling , and later on, lets you explore some of the most unexplored parts of South Africa and Morocco .

indian road trip film

#23 Rang De Basanti (2006)

The movie is based on a rebellious concept that tastefully blends the elements of history, patriotism, sacrifice, and politics. It’s primarily set in Delhi but also features the famous attractions in Jaipur and Punjab .

Remember that song ‘Masti Ki Pathshala’ from the movie? It was shot at the baoli in Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur . The beautiful mustard fields of Punjab make your heart crave to run through those fields of yellow mustard flowers. The famous Golden Temple of Amritsar , the Hola Mohalla Festival of Anandpur Sahib, and the famed Durga Sarai Fort of Ludhiana make RDB a must-watch for the right dose of wanderlust.

indian road trip film

#24 PK (2014)

Apart from the unusual tale of an alien stuck on the earth, what caught my attention was the picture book city of Bruges in Belgium which served as a perfect setting for the love story in the first half of the movie.

The gorgeous canals, charming cobbled streets, and medieval buildings made me fall in love with Bruges . Did you know PK is the first Bollywood movie shot in Bruges?

The movie also takes you through some of the most intriguing sites in Delhi like Agrasen ki Baoli , Chandni Chowk , Connaught Place , and the colorful countryside town of Rajasthan , Mandwa . You’ll get a taste of the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

indian road trip film

#27 Love Aaj Kal (2009)

A pinch of romance, a dash of comedy, a sprinkle of drama, and a lot of places – Love Aaj Kal gracefully portrays the complications of long-distance relationships.

The story takes you on a jaunt through London , Delhi , Kolkata , Punjab , and San Francisco . With beautiful visuals from the quaint villages of Punjab , narrow streets of Old Delhi , colorful locales of London , the oldest neighborhoods of Kolkata , and a sight of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco , Love Aaj Kal pushes you to leave the comforts of home and explore the world.

Its sequel, Love Aaj Kal 2 perfectly showcases the beauty of the untouched and quaint village of Chitkul in Himachal Pradesh at the Indo-Tibetan border aka The Last Village of India .

This is what I love about Imitiaz Ali. His every movie takes you to bucket-list-worthy destinations with his characters and casts a spell of travel on its audience. His movies Breathe, Dream, and Live Travel.

indian road trip film

#28 Lootera (2013)

Lootera is a story set in the ’50s. The daughter of an aristocrat falls in love with a visiting archeologist from West Bengal without knowing a secret his life holds. It’s shot in quaint and laid-back locations in India – Khajjiar , Dalhousie , and Manikpur, West Bengal .

The snow-clad mountains, colorful wooden houses, lush meadows, striking deodar forests, and pretty lakes – Khajjiar pulls you as you appreciate the beauty it holds with every scene.

#30 English Vinglish (2012)

One of the last movies of my all-time favorite actress, Sridevi – English Vinglish is a heartfelt story of a woman named Shashi who’s made to feel insecure and inferior just because she doesn’t speak English by her husband and daughter.

The film touches your soul as Shashi sets on a transformational solo journey to the Big Apple (NYC) to attend the wedding of her sister’s daughter. You can enjoy iconic sights and attractions in New York from Central Park, and Times Square to Brooklyn Bridge, and Fifth Avenue. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, New York City makes her feel as if she belongs here.

The song Manhattan is so powerful that you end up planning a trip to New York before even the movie ends.

New Film “Indian Road Trip” Is a Wacky Adventure from the Rez to Wreck Beach

When A.W. Hopkins worked for CTV, he traveled all over the country producing Indigenous current events stories. Even when he was in the most remote areas of Canada, local kids always had the same question once they found out Hopkins was based in Vancouver: “Have you ever been to Wreck Beach?”

Hopkins says that when Bell took over CTV and cut a lot of the local programming, he saw it as an opportunity to focus on something he’d always wanted to do: write. He took classes and read books and scribbled away, but nothing stuck. “After a year, it seemed like I wasn’t getting very far because I was doing what I was seeing on TV,” explains Hopkins, “and I thought, I think I have to write something that’s really personal.”

Thinking back to his roots on the N’Quatqua reserve and his cross-Canada travels, the artist decided to tackle a film genre he’d always admired: the road trip film. He wrote a 10-minute comedy, Indian Road Trip , in which a pair of Indigenous guys leave the reserve to go on the road trip of a lifetime. The destination? Wreck Beach, of course.

“I had just spent about ten years doing Indigenous social justice work, covering AIDS, HIV, fetal alcohol syndrome, and death in custody,” says Hopkins, “And I wanted to do something that shows a different side of Indigenous people, something that is humourous and captures the people in an authentic way.”

His short got into the Whistler Film Festival’s Indigenous Filmmaker Fellowship in 2015, then the Screenwriters Lab in 2016, where Hopkins extended it into a feature-length script. He got a micro-budget grant from Telus and shot the feature in Merritt in the summer of 2017. “90% of the crew and cast were Indigenous people, and the Indigenous people on the reserves—the locals—were so kind and generous,” remember Hopkins. “We were able to use their reserves and their roads and their houses for free, and they just welcomed us with open arms.”

indian road trip film

This month is Indian Road Trip ’s world premier, hosted by the Whistler Film Festival. “We are back at Whistler, so we’ve come full circle,” says Hopkins. That happens to be his traditional territory as well— the N’Quatqua land is just past Whistler.

Indian Road Trip celebrates Indigenous humour and joy. “That humour is missing in a lot of fiction, in a lot of documentary, in a lot of the reporting on Indigenous people,” says Hopkins, “and it’s really a shame.” The quirkiness and comedy is specifically for the film’s Indigenous audience. “I focused on humour that Indigenous people would get, not necessarily anybody else—I wasn’t trying to pander to a large white audience,” says Hopkins. “I am really hoping that Indigenous people get it, that they say, ‘Hey, that’s what it’s like.’”

You can watch Indian Road Trip at the virtual Whistler Film Fest on Tuesday, December 15. Find more info here . And keep an eye out for Cloudstriker , Hopkins’ next project. In this work of fiction, a young man escapes from a residential school and raises a small army of warriors to rescue the children he left behind. “It’s kind of a western,” says Hopkins. “I’ve done a road trip drama Indigenous-style, and now I’m doing a western Indigenous-style. My style.”

wff-2020---INDIAN-ROAD-TRIP-(original-title)---Stills-[1169502](1)-copy

Indian Road Trip is the film you need right now.

Filled with laugh-out-loud one-liners, a range of loveable goofballs, and shot in the picturesque Thompson-Nicola region, it’s a one-hour-and-45-minute escape from our current realities.

“This is kind of a love letter to my people up there where I’m from and to those quirky characters,” says A.W. Hopkins, who’s from the N’Quatqua First Nation near D’arcy. “And those stupid, funny, wild situations we got into. They emerged from the back of my subconscious and imagination.”

Hopkins’ debut feature film is the story of two cousins—Hank, the brooding brains, and Cody the beefy sidekick—who embark on a road trip to travel from their small, stifling reserve where “everyone knows what you’re thinking before you even think it” to the fabled Wreck Beach (Vancouver’s famous nude beach/ hippie hangout).

After getting caught in a few cons, mostly perpetuated against clueless tourists, they get assigned a task before they can hit the road. They have to drive a curmudgeonly (but hilariously blunt) elder to see her estranged, dying sister on the old reserve.

“I realized as I was writing, I had tremendous affection for my characters,” Hopkins says. “I like them all. I want to spend time with them. It was really easy once I got going to write the script and put them in those situations. I want people to walk away with not so much a political [take] or thinking about an issue, but mainly just an emotion. ‘I experienced something that is different, that is authentic.’”

Hopkins grew up between N’Quatqua and Vancouver. He spent years working for CTV covering Indigenous current events stories. But when his job got cut, and he noticed the state of the industry, he decided to focus on scriptwriting.

It’s been a running theme throughout his filmmaking career that someone notices an opportunity and connects him with the right people, just under deadline. It all started with the Whistler Film Festival’s Indigenous Filmmaker Fellowship in 2015.

“It was the first time I spent a lot of time around Indigenous filmmakers,” Hopkins says. “That was great to connect on that level and see what people were interested in doing. Everyone seemed to like my script. I was sure I would have the very worst script and no one would like it, but it was the opposite; everyone seemed to like it.”

The following year, he was accepted to the festival’s Screenwriters Lab to further hone the script—and make industry connections.

“My career so far is very much dependent on the Whistler Film Festival,” he says.

To that end, he had a few festivals that wanted to debut the film, but he knew it had to be at Whistler.

“I’m just really grateful Whistler wanted to debut it,” he said.

The road-trip genre had always been appealing to Hopkins, but it’s the Indigenous angle that makes it unique and compelling. He taps into a humour that might be common to Indigenous people, but is rarely seen on the big screen.

“I think it is a bit untapped,” he says. “That kind of humour was a daily thing when it was in my formative years on the reservation. The two main characters are kind of loosely based on my brother and my cousin who just had such a great dynamic. They were so funny. Everyone thought they were hilarious and very cool. There has been Indigenous humour for years and years; it doesn’t get a lot of attention.”

At its core, the film is about grappling with the desire to forge your own path or stay where you have roots and connections. For Hopkins, it’s a bit of a fantasy of what could’ve been if he had chosen another path.

“I think a lot of Indigenous people who leave their land and their people and some of the history back on the reserve struggle with this feeling of, ‘How do I maintain that connection? Have I lost that?’ Once you get into the city and [start] doing education and working in an office and getting onto that wheel of accomplishment, I think a lot struggle with that and try and work out their own personal way of dealing with it.”

Dhak Dhak movie review: Four biker women take on a road trip that excites and empowers but doesn't bore

Dhak dhak movie review: watch it to experience an adrenaline rush of seeing women on bike, taking a road trip of their life..

'Sometimes in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself'. Dhak Dhak ends on this beautiful note, and it somewhat sums up what the film stands for. Four women embark on a bike trip from Delhi to Leh, and with their mean machines roaring loud, they must reach world's highest peak, Khardung La. What makes the journey even more exciting is how these four women from different backgrounds bond on common grounds, and discover themselves and their strengths, while crossing one obstacle after another. Along the journey, they laugh, enjoy, break down, rise again and ride vigorously towards their dream. Also read: Dhak Dhak Twitter reviews

Sanjana Sanghi, Ratna Pathak Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Dia Mirza feature in Dhak Dhak.

With its heart at the right place and a well-meaning plot, Dhak Dhak attempts to empower you, entertain you and keeps you excited. It is not at all devoid of the thrills and frills that you would expect to see in a road trip movie. Director Tarun Dudeja wastes no time in weaving subplots to make us meet his leading ladies.

Crux of Dhak Dhak

The story starts with Shashi Kumar Yadav aka Sky ( Fatima Sana Shaikh ), a YouTuber, who with her penchant for bikes and travel photography, wants to reset her identity that got tarnished after an ugly online scandal. Covering the Barcelona auto expo on her channel is the next big thing on her list, but she first needs to prove herself to secure that spot.

Searching for a story, Sky meets Manpreet Kaur Sethi aka Mahi ( Ratna Pathak Shah ), who had just won a bike by collecting newspaper coupons, and in no time, nurtured a dream to one day go on a bike trip to one of the world's highest motorable roads. Upon realising that only Sky can help her turn this dream into a reality, Mahi gets aboard the idea of this dangerous bike trip.

Joining the duo on this trip next is automobile mechanic Uzma ( Dia Mirza ), who couldn't have asked for a better chance in life to show to her husband that she, too, deserves to follow her aspirations. Lastly, when an extremely guarded Manjari ( Sanjana Sanghi ), who has been pressured by her single mother to settle for an arranged marriage without even meeting her to-be-groom, sees an opportunity to live her life one last time, she laps it up without any second thoughts.

How the four face all the struggles, yet don't give up on their journey, and how the most difficult roads lead them to the most beautiful destination of their life, is what forms the crux of Dhak Dhak.

Dhak Dhak needed better editing

The story co-written by Parijat Joshi and Anvita Dutt follows a simplistic screenplay without complicating it much. Though, at places, it does look patchy and inconsistent, especially in its pace. The first half brilliantly sets the premise, and gives adequate attention to the story of each of these four protagonists.

At 2 hours 17 minutes, the film could have been edited a bit more crisply. It slows down quite often, and especially in the second half, gets a tad stretched. Despite that flaws, the conviction and determination that these four actors showcase just lifts up the whole story. Sure it could have had more depth and grip on the narrative, but for most part, Dhak Dhak succeeds in keeping you invested in each of these four tales.

The performances are earnest

Ratna, a seasoned performer, brings her experience and finesse, and as a matriarch of a Punjabi family, she is so endearing and a delight to watch. The way she keeps the quartet together fills your heart with joy, giving you hope that age is never a hindrance, if you decide to live your dreams.

Fatima is quite impressive in this bold and daring act, and as the in-charge leading the pack to their destination, she exudes immense confidence and power. Dia as a Muslim wife suffering at the hands of her shauhar (husband) is a slightly stereotypical portrayal, not problematic though. Sanjana, is perhaps the weakest written character of the four, but holds her own and delivers an earnest performance in whatever she gets to do.

Dhak Dhak also has several heartwarming moments, when these women seeks solace and comfort in a stranger, and a piece of advice from the person helps them navigate ahead. Sky's heart-to-heart with a monk, Manjari's rescue moment with a truck driver, who tells her to look for solutions rather than focus on problems, and Mahi's encounter with a foreigner, who helps her bike, are among the touching moments in the film.

Dhak Dhak review: The Sanjana Sanghi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ratna Pathak Shah and Dia Mirza film released on Friday.

Doesn't opt for a preachy route to make a point

Even the sequence, when the quartet gets high on substance-laced cookies and rum, while spending a night at a lodge, has been thoughtfully written and shot. The way the four let themselves lose, discuss about orgasm, faking it, condom flavour and never being kissed, it brings out their vulnerabilities, and at the same time, letting them bare their soul and connect with each other without any inhibitions. But, one question here: Why do we always need to show women under the influence of some substance to be able to speak their mind and heart?

Besides these moments that strike a chord, there are various underline messages that the film aims at conveying and gladly, it doesn't opt for a preachy route to make a point. For instance, when Uzma tells her husband that he should seek her consent in bed. Or when Manjari confronts her mother and expresses that she wants to be like her - independent, decisive and strong. They leave you with a thought that stays with you for long.

Dhak Dhak might have used a lot of tropes that you would see in a story about women empowerment, but it is also about a lot of things that you usually don't associate with women. At the core, it remains a tale of this quartet, who continues to break free from the past, and dealing with the present conflicts. In the end, the four women's desire and dream is to ride all the way up is what leaves a sense of pride and victory. Watch Dhak Dhak to experience an adrenaline rush of seeing women on bike, taking a road trip of their life, and also enjoy some scenic views of the magnificent Leh.
