  • Average temperature range in Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Luxor (middle to south of Egypt) : 22°C–35°C (72°F–95°F)

  • Rainy days : 1 day with a little shower on average
  • Sunny days : all days

Egypt Regional Weather in October

In October, you can expect temperatures to be more pleasant in the evenings and early mornings, with temperatures rising throughout the daytime.

In Aswan, one of the hotter cities in the country, maximum temperatures reach 36°C (97°F), while Alexandria is cooler (as it's in Egypt's north, near the coast), with a maximum of 27°C (82°F) in October.

If you are looking for slightly cooler temperatures, traveling to Egypt towards the end of October is better than early October . We also recommend sightseeing in the mornings or towards the end of the day, and staying out of the midday sun where possible.

When it comes to rainfall, nowhere in Egypt experiences a lot of rainfall at any point during the year, but October is a relatively "wet" month compared to others. However, in reality this only means that you may experience a short shower of rain if you are visiting Alexandria, Cairo, or Hurghada in October. Because the rest of the day is still sunny, this weather is not something that would stop you from visiting or sightseeing. On average the precipitation is around 2 to 5 mm (0.1 to 0.2 in), barely anything!

1. cairo and giza.

As Egypt's capital, Cairo is a must-see and would likely be your first stop in Egypt as this is where the country's main international airport is. You could enjoy Cairo's wonderful architecture and spend some time shopping for souvenirs at the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

To avoid the hottest part of the day, we recommend heading outside in the early parts of the day, and saving the indoor activities for the middle of the day.

The same goes for Giza, where you'll visit The Pyramids of Giza. We recommend heading over in the early morning to beat the heat.

Luxor is a great place to visit in October, when the temperatures are lower than in the middle of the summer. There you could see Luxor Temple as well as the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens , some of Egypt's most incredible historical sights that are not to be missed.

Temperatures in Luxor can be high in the middle of the day, especially in early October, so we recommend visiting the sights earlier in the day if this works with your itinerary.

3. Alexandria

Egypt's second-biggest city, Alexandria, is located on the Mediterranean coast, meaning temperatures there are slightly lower than in the rest of the country. October is a great time of year to visit Alexandria, when days are mostly sunny. Although you might experience a brief shower, it won't rain for long or much at all.

4. Hurghada

Although temperatures start to decrease in October, Egypt's seaside locations are still worth a visit during these months. With a daily average peak of 32°C (90°F), Hurghada is a great place to visit in October for those who aren't looking for scorching beach temperatures .

The slightly lower temperatures also mean that October is a better time of year for water sports and activities, such as snorkeling and diving.

When planning your Egypt trip, see our handpicked itineraries including Cairo for various durations: 5 days , 7 days , 8 days , 10 days , 12 days , 14 days and 21 days ...

As October isn't the high reason in Egypt, you won't find that there are too many crowds (peak tourist season in Egypt is December and January, during Egypt's winter). This is why October is a great time to visit, as fewer tourists also means that there are slightly lower prices throughout the country when it comes to accommodation and travel.

However, because Egypt is home to some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, for example, the Pyramids of Giza, you cannot expect anywhere to be truly empty at any time of the year. Tourists come to marvel over Egypt's history throughout the year, regardless of the month and the weather!

Monthly Weather in Egypt

What to wear in egypt in october.

October is still a relatively warm month in Egypt, so you won't have to bring too many layers with you . We recommend wearing light colored clothing rather than dark colored clothing when you are sightseeing, as this will keep you cooler throughout the middle of the day when the temperatures are higher. Bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat is also a good idea if you are going to be outdoors for most of the day.

As always, we also recommend good footwear, as some of the sights do require a decent amount of walking on uneven terrain .

It is Egyptian custom to cover the knees and shoulders for everybody, so we do recommend natural fabrics that will keep you cooler as well as covered. You can read more about What to Wear in Egypt: For Women and For Different Seasons .

The best time to go to Egypt to avoid the heat and crowds

best places to visit in egypt in october

There's always something incredible to see or do in Egypt, no matter which month you visit © Lizavetta / Shutterstock

Tourism in Egypt is bound by the seasons. While only the hardiest want to troop through temples during the scorching heat of July and August, Egypt’s mild winter brings in flocks of visitors to flop on the beaches, gawk at Giza’s pyramids and cruise the Nile.

A happy medium can be reached by traveling during the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring when the press of fellow travelers isn’t as intense at major sites and daytime temperatures hover at manageable levels.

Read on for the best time to visit whether you're heading to Egypt to sightsee, go scuba diving or cruise the Nile.

March to May plus September are the best for avoiding crowds

Traveling during shoulder season often brings the best of both worlds. Major monuments aren’t as packed and there’s usually an accommodation bargain or two to be had.

Daytime temperatures can still be very hot in May and September so shoulder season travelers sensitive to heat (and families traveling with little ones) would do well to aim for March, April or October instead.

The weather is generally bearable so you can spend an entire day outside from about late-September into October. This is really Egypt’s best travel season.  It's also a good time for diving. The light along the Nile is at its most soft and clear – great for photography in Luxor and Aswan – while in the Western Desert oases, the date harvest is in full swing.

The sand-loaded khamsin wind begins blowing in March, and the resulting sandstorms can disrupt travel and occasional ground flights; prevent feluccas from sailing in Aswan; and make sightseeing impossible due to low visibility. Add an extra day or two into your itinerary in case plans go awry.

In April, the khamsin can still be an issue, but when it isn’t blowing this is a near-perfect month for Egypt travels. The warmer evenings make it particularly good for overnight felucca trips from Aswan and camping in the White Desert.

May is usually a good time for package-deals to resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam.

June through August is the best time to go diving in Egypt

The weather switches to sweltering as average high temperature hit 108°F (42°C). Luxor’s temples and tombs open at 6am so it’s still possible to beat the heat by being an early bird.

Expect to be greeted with an ironic “Welcome to Alaska!” in Aswan. Unless you’re made of extremely tough stuff, it’s best to skip the Western Desert.

Summer is when serious divers head to Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast. They’re willing to take the baking heat on land in return for the payoff of calm, warm sea conditions and fantastic underwater visibility. Although Egypt can be dived year-round.

Just to flip the low season rule, summer is the peak domestic-holiday period along the Mediterranean coast as half of Cairo decamps to the beach. Yes, it’s still boiling in Alexandria but at least there’s a breeze.

October to February is best for milder weather in Egypt

In the Northern European winter, many travelers (and tour groups) escape the gray skies back home to bask on the beaches of Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast  this time of year.

You'll find decent weather across most of the country, although in Cairo and Alexandria  be prepared for rain. If you’re here to delve into Luxor’s glut of Pharaonic riches, winter brings blue skies and pleasant daytime temperatures to make long days of rambling around ancient ruins a pleasure rather than an endurance test.

This is also the most popular season to head into the Sinai or the Western Desert for outdoor adventures (from hiking to camel trekking), or to bask in the winter sun between learning to dive in South Sinai and along the Red Sea coast . Divers should note that sea conditions can get choppy on boat dives around December, but shore dives are generally fine.

In Cairo , the cooler weather makes November a good bet for long strolls to discover the capital’s madrassas and mosques. Be aware, it will get colder than you probably expect (especially else after dark) so you also need to pack something warm. Finally, expect high accommodation prices during the winter peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Can I travel in Egypt during Ramadan?

The dates for Ramadan (the month when Muslims fast during daylight hours) change annually as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year.

If you’re traveling during Ramadan, be aware that tourist sites, along with most shops and services, operate shorter hours and many non-tourist orientated restaurants and cafes only open after sunset.

In Egypt, non-Muslims are not expected to observe the fast but visitors should politely show respect for fasters by being discreet – don’t blatantly swig from your water bottle or munch snacks on the street.

Egypt Weather in October

You can relax on this sandy beach covered in palm trees while touring Egypt in October.

With October being at the end of fall and the start of winter, the temperatures in Egypt drop to a daily average of 28°C, which is still warm enough to enjoy a beach getaway. However, if you’re looking to visit the capital city, Cairo , you can expect warmer temperatures up to 32°C, as there isn’t as much of a coastal breeze.

The rain levels remain low, ebbing between 1-15mm for the entire month. The occasional rainfall is short and sparse, so you can still enjoy all the wonders that Egypt has to offer during October.

For a seasonal overview, check out our guide on the best time to visit Egypt .

Why visit egypt in october.

October offers plenty of reasons to book a holiday in Egypt. Here are a few.

  • More options: With the start of peak season, more tour companies and tourist-focused establishments are opening back up for business. Similarly, more resorts will be running activities to cater to the crowds. You will have plenty of options in terms of destinations and how to get there.
  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival: On the 21st of October there’s a huge festival that commemorates the day that Ramses II—one of the most famous pharaohs in Egyptian history—ascended to the throne. It’s a one-of-a-kind event that you don’t want to miss out on.
  • Celebrate harvest with Siyaha: During October, you can experience Siyaha, a full moon harvest festival at the Siwa Oasis in the Western Desert. Expect Sufi chanting, dancing, delicious food and a nighttime prayer circle that’s a huge cultural moment to witness. It is a great opportunity to find out more about local Egyptian culture.
  • Moulid of Sayyed Al Badawi : Get in touch with the religious history of the Sufi people as they engage on a pilgrimage along the Nile Delta. This pilgrimage is in honor of Sayyed Al Badawi, a 13th-century hero who helped to defeat the crusaders.

Where to go and what to do

The famous Pompey pillar with sphinx in the Egyptian city of Alexandria.

Want to inject some history and culture into your trip? Travel to Alexandria to check out the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. The underground nature of the catacombs offers a cooling respite from the north African sun. While in Alexandria, check out some of the other historical sites like Serapeum and Pompey's Pillar, erected for the Roman emperor, or the Alexandria National Museum that’s full of interesting artifacts.

October is the perfect time to check out the beach towns of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. As it’s just the start of the peak season, the crowds may not have fully descended yet and you might be able to score yourself a deal. The more manageable coastal temperatures aren’t overwhelming and, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, there are plenty of activities including parasailing, and windsurfing available to try!

Looking to add more adventure to your Egyptian holiday? Egypt is home to beautiful resorts with world-class scuba diving. The cooler temperatures and tourist spots reopening mean that October is an ideal time to get qualified. A trip to Dahab is ideal for scuba diving as it is packed with great resorts and amenities for you to enjoy even when you’re out of the water. Don’t worry about bringing all your gear, scuba diving is a popular activity here, so you can rent everything you need when you arrive. Why not enjoy a holiday and come back with a new skill?

If you’re looking to explore the expansive desert landscapes in Egypt , October is a great month to go on a desert safari. As October is cooler than the summer months with the nighttime temperatures in the desert getting down, it’s possible to explore the desert on a guided 4x4 tour, and appreciate nature at its finest.

All in all, October is an excellent time to visit Egypt, and the earlier in the month, the better (in terms of prices and crowds). However, no matter when you visit, there will be plenty of festivals, culture, history and beaches to appreciate.

It’s not always easy to plan an entire trip on your own, so why not take advantage of our customizable trip tool ? Just put in your dates and party size and our travel experts will do the hard work for you.

Why not go through our tours to Egypt in October for more inspiration.

20 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Egypt

Written by Jess Lee Updated Oct 16, 2023

Home of the ancient Pharaohs, Egypt is a destination full of dazzling temples and tombs that wow all who visit. It's not all historic treasures and tourist attractions, though. With vast tracts of desert for 4WD adventures, the Red Sea's world-class coral reefs and wrecks for divers, and cruising on the famed Nile River, there are plenty of things to do in Egypt for all types of travelers.

Beach lovers head to the Sinai or the Red Sea Coast to soak up the sun, while archaeology fans will have a field day in Luxor.

Cairo is the megalopolis that can't be beaten for city slickers, while Siwa oasis and the southern town of Aswan offer a slice of the slow pace of the countryside.

With so much to see and do, Egypt offers visitors a chance to create itineraries that combine culture, adventure, and relaxation all on one trip.

Plan your sightseeing with our list of the top attractions and places to visit in Egypt.

1. Pyramids of Giza

2. luxor's temples & tombs, 3. cruising the nile, 5. abu simbel, 6. diving the red sea, 7. explore historic cairo, 8. south sinai's beach life, 10. egyptian museum, 11. white desert, 12. alexandria, 13. abydos temple, 14. siwa oasis, 15. st. catherine's monastery, 16. red sea beaches, 17. coptic cairo, 18. wadi al-hitan, 19. temple of hathor, 20. monastery of st. anthony.

Pyramids of Giza

The last surviving wonder of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Pyramids of Giza are one of the world's most recognizable landmarks.

Having awed travelers down through the ages, these tombs of the Pharaohs Khufu (Cheops), Khafre (Chephren), and Menkaure (Mycerinus), guarded by the enigmatic Sphinx, are usually top of most visitor's lists of tourist attractions to see in Egypt and often the first sight they head to after landing.

Today, sitting on the desert edge of Cairo's sprawl, these megalithic memorials to dead pharaohs are still as wondrous a sight as they ever were and an undeniable highlight of any Egypt trip.

To beat the crowds , get here around 7:30am and enter through the main Pyramid of Khufu site entrance (rather than the Sphinx entrance). This means you can have finished exploring the interior tunnels and burial chambers of the Pyramid of Khufu by the time the tour buses start pulling in at 8:15am.

Most visitors limit their site visit to the three pyramids and the Sphinx, but there is plenty more to see on the Giza Plateau. If you can, reserve time to explore the funerary complexes of the eastern cemetery (on the east side of the Pyramid of Khufu). The tombs of 6th dynasty high officials Qar and Idu and the tomb of Meresankh III (who was one of Pharaoh Khafre's wives) are all open to the public.

Karnak Temple

Famed for the Valley of the Kings , Karnak Temple , and the Memorial Temple of Hatshepsut, the Nile-side town of Luxor in Upper Egypt has a glut of tourist attractions.

This is ancient Thebes, the power base of the New Kingdom pharaohs, and home to more sights than most can see on one visit.

Luxor's east bank is home to the modern city, with its vibrant souq; the two temples of Karnak and Luxor; and the museum. The west bank's lush farmland and barren cliffs are where the vast majority of Luxor's tourist attractions sit, with so many tomb and temple sights that it has been called the biggest open-air museum in the world.

Spend a few days here exploring the colorful wall art of the tombs and gazing in awe at the colossal columns in the temples, and you'll see why Luxor continues to fascinate historians and archaeologists.

The Valley of the Kings is one of Egypt's most visited sites but, if you are willing to get up extra early, you can beat the crowds . All of Luxor's archaeological sites open at 6am, but hardly any visitors (and no large tour operators) take advantage of this.

Kick off your sightseeing with a 6am start at the Valley of the Kings, and you'll get to experience the interiors of Luxor's famed New Kingdom tombs with hardly anyone else (except the handful of other wily early risers) there.

Cruising on the Nile at Luxor

Egypt is defined by the Nile. For many visitors, a multi-day cruise upon this famed waterway that saw the rise of the Pharaonic era is a highlight of their Egypt trip.

Cruising the Nile is also the most relaxing way to see the temples that stud the banks of the river on the route between Luxor and Aswan, plus sunrise and sunset over the date-palm-studded river banks, backed by sand dunes, is one of Egypt's most tranquil vistas.

The two famous sights on a Nile Cruise are the Temple of Kom Ombo and Edfu's Temple of Horus , where all the big cruise boats stop.

If you'd prefer a less crowded and slower experience, though, and don't mind "roughing it" a bit, you can also cruise the Nile by felucca (Egypt's traditional lateen-sailed wooden boats), which also allows you to create your own itinerary.

The vast amount of cruise boat itineraries depart from either Luxor or Aswan, but feluccas can only be chartered for multi-day trips from Aswan.

Feluccas on the Nile at Aswan

Egypt's most tranquil town is Aswan, set upon the winding curves of the Nile. Backed by orange-hued dunes, this is the perfect place to stop and unwind for a few days and soak up the chilled-out atmosphere.

Take the river ferry across to Elephantine Island and stroll the colorful streets of the Nubian villages. Then ride a camel to the desert monastery of St. Simeon on Aswan's east bank. Afterwards, relax in one of the riverboat restaurants while watching the lateen-sailed feluccas drift past.

Make sure to jump aboard a felucca at sunset to sail around Aswan's islands. This is by far, Aswan's most popular activity and the most relaxing way to take in the local sights.

There are plenty of historic sites here and numerous temples nearby, including Philae Temple on its island, but one of Aswan's most popular things to do is simply kicking back and watching the river life go by.

Abu Simbel

Even in a country festooned with temples, Abu Simbel is something special. This is Ramses II's great temple, adorned with colossal statuary standing guard outside, and with an interior sumptuously decorated with wall paintings.

Justly famous for its megalithic proportions, Abu Simbel is also known for the incredible engineering feat carried out by UNESCO in the 1960s, which saw the entire temple moved from its original setting to save it from disappearing under the rising water of the Aswan Dam.

Today, exploring Abu Simbel is just as much about admiring the triumph of this international effort to save the temple complex as it is about gaping in wonder at Ramses II's awe-inspiring building works, itself.

Most people arrive in Abu Simbel on organized day trips from Aswan, which all have an early morning start to get to the temple complex at 8am or 9am.

After 11am, nearly everyone has cleared out and headed back to Aswan. To wander through Ramses II's colossal monument without the crowds, overnight in Abu Simbel village itself and visit the temples after midday.

Divers enjoying the underwater beauty of the Red Sea

Below the Red Sea's surface is another world as fascinating as the temples and tombs on land.

The coral reefs of the Red Sea are renowned among scuba divers for both the soft corals on display and the vast amount of sea life, ranging from colorful reef fish and nudibranchs to sharks, dolphins, turtles, rays, and even dugongs.

For divers, the most famous town to base yourself in is Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula, closest to the reefs of Ras Mohammed National Park, as well as the reefs of the Straits of Tiran.

To dive the sites of the Straits of Gubal head to Hurghada or El Gouna on the Red Sea coast, while advanced divers should check out the resort of Marsa Alam, the nearest base for diving Egypt's "deep south" dive sites.

Thistlegorm wreck dive

As well as fish life and coral, the Red Sea is a major wreck-diving destination. The most famous wreck is the Thistlegorm, a British WWII cargo ship that was on its way to resupply Allied troops when it was bombed by the Germans in 1941.

Today the site is regarded by divers as one of the top five wreck dives in the world due to the vast cargo of cars, motorbikes, and WWII memorabilia that can be seen both scattered on the sea bed around the wreck and inside the ship itself.

Dive boat trips to the wreck are organized from both Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada.

The Red Sea offers year-round diving but for the calmest sea conditions and best underwater visibility, July and August are the best months . This is high summer in Egypt though with its accompanying sweltering on-land temperatures. If your Egypt trip doesn't solely revolve around diving, it's still best to avoid these months.

Islamic Cairo

The atmospheric, narrow lanes of the capital's Historic Cairo district are crammed full of mosques, madrassas (Islamic schools of learning), and monuments dating from the Fatimid through to the Mameluke eras.

This is where you'll find the labyrinth shopping souq of Khan el-Khalili, where coppersmiths and artisans still have their tiny workshops, and stalls are laden with ceramics, textiles, spice, and perfume.

Surrounding the market is a muddle of roads, home to some of the most beautiful preserved architecture of the old Islamic empires.

There is a wealth of history here to explore. Visit Al-Azhar Mosque and the dazzling Sultan Hassan Mosque , and make sure to climb up to the roof of the ancient medieval gate of Bab Zuweila for the best minaret-speckled panoramas across the district.

Mornings are the best time to visit this district as the narrow lanes are at their quietest. If you're planning to visit the area's mosques though, avoid visiting on Fridays (the Muslim holy day) . If you want to enter mosques as a tourist, dress conservatively (covering arms and legs) and bring along a scarf to throw over your head if you're female.

Keen shoppers should head to Khan el-Khalili in the evening: the shops here are all open until late and the souq is at its most vibrant after dark.

South Sinai

Egypt's South Sinai region, on the Sinai Peninsula, offers a beach for every type of traveler.

Sharm el-Sheikh is a European-style resort town packed full of luxury hotels, international restaurants, and bags of entertainment options. A favorite with Europeans on winter-sun vacations, many of the resorts here cater to families on one- or two-week sun-and-sand breaks.

Dahab is a low-key beach town with a budget-traveler heart, which is just as much about desert excursions and adventures as the sea. It's particularly known for its cheap dive-package deals and for its lagoon beach area where windsurfing and kitesurfing are the top activity.

Up the coast, between the port town of Nuweiba and the border town of Taba are the bamboo hut retreats that offer complete get-away-from-it-all respites from life and back-to-basics beach life.

Pyramid and ruins at Saqqara

Everyone's heard of Giza's Pyramids, but they're not the only pyramids Egypt has up its sleeve. Day-tripping distance from Cairo , Saqqara is a vast necropolis of tombs and pyramids that was utilized during every era of Pharaonic rule.

It's best known for its Old Kingdom Step Pyramid, which shows how the architects of Ancient Egypt advanced their engineering knowledge to finally create a true pyramid shape.

There's much more to see beyond the Step Pyramid, though, with some of the surrounding tombs, such as the Mastaba of Ti, showcasing some of the finest tomb paintings you'll see in the country.

Nearby, the pyramid site of Dahshur is home to the Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid, which should be included on any Saqqara visit.

Egyptian Museum

A treasure trove of the Pharaonic world, Cairo's Egyptian Museum is one of the world's great museum collections . The faded pink mansion in downtown Cairo is home to a dazzling amount of exhibits.

The museum's exhibits cover the breadth of the Pharaonic era with highlights including its artifacts from pre-dynastic Egypt, the Old Kingdom galleries displaying the fine statuary from Egypt's period of pyramid builders, and the displays of glittering funerary goods unearthed from the country's most famous tomb finds.

Make sure to reserve enough time at the museum to fully view the galleries devoted to the grave goods of Yuya and Thuya and the royal tombs of Tanis (both upstairs).

Until Giza's much-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opens, the Egyptian Museum is also where you come to see a selection of the riches from Tutankhamen's Valley of the Kings tomb. When the GEM finally does open, these will be moved there (and the entire Tutankhamen collection will be displayed in full for the first time).

Everything else though in the Egyptian Museum's collection will be staying in place.

White Desert

Egypt's kookiest natural wonder is White Desert National Park, out in the Western Desert, just south of Bahariya Oasis. Here, surreally shaped chalk pinnacles and huge boulders loom over the desert plateau, creating a scene that looks like icebergs have found themselves stranded amid a landscape of sand.

This highly scenic environment looks like something out of a science fiction movie and is a favorite destination for 4WD desert trips and overnight camping , which are both easiest organized in Bahariya Oasis.

For desert fans and adventurers, this is the ultimate weird playground, while anybody who's had their fill of temples and tombs will enjoy this spectacular natural scenery.

Alexandria

Alexandria has a history that not many others can match.

Founded by Alexander the Great, home of Cleopatra, and razzmatazz renegade city of the Mediterranean for much of its life, this seafront city has an appealing days-gone-by atmosphere that can't be beaten.

Although today, there are few historic remnants of its illustrious past left to see, Alexandria's long seafront Corniche road leading to its fort (sitting on the site where its famous ancient lighthouse once sat) remains a favorite summer destination to capture cooling sea breezes for Egyptians and foreign visitors alike.

Underwater archaeological projects here have imbued Alexandria's museums with interesting exhibits. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a contemporary interpretation of Alexandria's famed ancient library, and the handful of historic sights in town include an atmospheric catacombs site.

Abydos Temple

The Temple of Osiris in Abydos is one of Ancient Egypt's most fascinating artistic treasures.

The temple, begun by Seti I, sits amid a vast necropolis site where archaeological excavations are ongoing. There a various other temple remnants to see here but for most visitors, the Temple of Osiris is the main reason to visit.

Its hypostyle halls, graced by papyrus-headed columns, contain some of the finest relief-work in Egypt, with various scenes portraying the pharaoh and the gods of Ancient Egypt.

As the temple lies north of Luxor, it isn't on the main Nile cruise ship route, so it receives much fewer visitors than the temple sites in Luxor itself and the Nile-side temples to the south. This means you are often lucky enough to wander through the temple's halls with only a few other visitors on site.

Siwa Oasis

Sitting in isolation, in the western corner of the Western Desert, Siwa is the tranquil tonic to the hustle of Egypt's cities. This gorgeous little oasis, surrounded by date palm plantations and numerous hot-water springs, is one of the Western Desert's most picturesque spots.

Siwa town is centered around the ruins of a vast mud-brick citadel, known as the Fortress of Shali, which dominates the view, while various temple remnants, including the Temple of the Oracle where Alexander the Great is said to have come to receive advice, are scattered throughout the wider oasis area.

This is a top spot to wind down and go slow for a few days, as well as being an excellent base from which to plan adventures into the surrounding desert.

St. Catherine's Monastery

One of the oldest monasteries in the world, St. Catherine's stands at the foot of Mount Sinai, amid the desert mountains of the Sinai Peninsula, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments.

This desert monastery is home to an incredible collection of religious iconography, art, and manuscripts (some of which can be seen in the on-site museum), as well as the burning bush.

For most visitors here, a trip to St. Catherine's also involves a hike up Mount Sinai to see sunrise or sunset. Take the camel path for the easy route, or climb the famous Steps of Repentance if you want better views.

Umbrellas on the beach in Hurghada

Egypt's Red Sea coastline offers swaths of sand for travelers who want a time-out from temple viewing.

During winter, the resorts scattered along the shore surrounding Hurghada jump into life as European families arrive on package tourism breaks.

The big bonus of choosing a resort on the Red Sea coast over one on the Sinai Peninsula is that you are within day-tripping distance to Luxor, so this is the best place to visit for beach life if you still want to easily see some of Egypt's most famous monuments.

Hurghada and El Gouna are the two main resort towns, while the smaller, and still being-developed, town of Marsa Alam is much farther south.

Fortress of Babylon walls

The Cairo district known as Coptic Cairo is one of the most important Christian sites in the country.

Originally the Fortress of Babylon, dating back to the Achaemenid Empire's conquest of Egypt in 525 BCE, this district is home to Cairo's oldest surviving church, synagogue, and mosque, as well as the excellent Coptic Museum, which holds the world's largest collection of Coptic Christian art and antiquities.

A section of the Fortress of Babylon's walls, which were repaired and expanded under Roman rule, are also still standing and are the entrance into the district.

Make sure to visit the Hanging Church, which holds a fine collection of icons and was built half over the Roman-era water wheel (hence the church's name). Then thread your way down the narrow alley to the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus which, according to local tradition, was built atop the site where the Holy Family with the infant Jesus lived in refuge after fleeing King Herod.

Nearby, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is famous for being the site where the Geniza documents cache were discovered.

A short walk away is the Mosque of Amr Ibn Al As, built by the Arab Muslim army commander (and later, first governor of Egypt) after conquering Egypt.

Wadi Al-Hitan's fossils

Wadi Al-Hitan is in the Fayoum area, a lush and fertile depression fed by ancient canals and surrounded by desert.

The Fayoum itself, with Lake Quran, the pottery village of Tunis, and Pharaonic ruins scattered across the hinterland, is an interesting place to visit, but the main tourist attraction here, in the nearby desert, is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Wadi Al-Hitan.

Amid the orange dunes and jagged rocks of this desert valley, a vast fossil cache of the oldest prehistoric whales (the basilosaurus and dorodontus) were discovered, hugely aiding human understanding of the evolution of whales.

Some of the finds have been kept in situ, with walking tracks radiating out from the visitor's center to skeleton sites sitting amid the sand.

In the visitor center itself, a museum dedicated to the site does an excellent job of explaining Wadi Al-Hitan's importance, and displays many of the site's other finds, including a skeleton of a basilosaurus whale that measures 18 meters long.

Temple of Hathor

The Temple of Hathor at Dendara was built in the late Pharaonic era and extended during the Roman period, though Dendara itself was an important cult center from early on in the period of Ancient Egypt.

A trip here is well worth a day trip from Luxor, as the temple's youth (in comparison to other Pharaonic temples) means that it is one of the most complete surviving temples in Egypt.

The reliefs and decoration here are in an excellently preserved state. In particular, while in the hypostyle hall, which was built by the Roman Emperor Tiberius, note the columns topped by heads of the Egyptian god Hathor, and the wall reliefs of the emperor paying tribute to the Egyptian gods.

Dendara is just outside the city of Qena, 80 kilometers north from Luxor.

Monastery of St. Anthony

Secreted within the jagged northern mountains of the Red Sea coast, the Monastery of St. Anthony has been a working monastery since the 4th century, and today is still home to around 120 monks.

The Church of St. Anthony, within the fortress-like compound, has an interior of secco wall paintings that are considered one of the most important collections of Egyptian Coptic art in the world and date from around the 11th and 12th centuries. The church is also home to the tomb of St. Anthony (the father of monasticism) and is a major pilgrimage destination for Egyptian Coptic Christians.

Monks run tours of the monastery that include visiting the church and some of the monastery's gardens, as well as allowing you to head up and walk on top of the monastery's walls.

St. Anthony's Monastery is very isolated. If you don't have your own transport, the easiest way to get here is to hire a driver from Cairo or Hurghada.

Best Time to Visit Egypt: Month by Month Breakdown

Egypt is a destination of rich archaeological sites, beautiful coastline and compelling history and culture stretching back thousands of years.

Tourists have been visiting Egypt for centuries, intent on delving into the ancient world, cruising the Nile River, and staring in awe at the Pyramids of Giza.

For tourists, the weather is great in Egypt. The country enjoys sunshine and hot weather all through the year, with very little rainfall even in winter.

The weather can vary from region to region, with a Mediterranean climate on the coast, and a more desert-like climate inland.

There are usually two high seasons to consider when deciding the best time to visit Egypt.

The cooler winter months between December and February are the best time for exploring the ruins and archaeological sites.

The scorching hot summer months, between June and August, are a favorite time of year for hanging out at the Red Sea beach resorts.

Spoiler Alert! Our favorite time to visit Egypt is November.

To help you to plan your getaway, here’s our guide to choosing the best time to visit Egypt!

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Egypt (Travel Guide)

Table of Contents

Egypt Winter Months

Camels at the Great Pyramids of Giza - best time to visit egypt

Winter in Egypt is high season because the weather is cooler than other months of the year yet still beautifully sunny.

It’s a favorite spot for winter sun-seekers, and especially for lovers of Egyptology.

While the desert gets cold at night – bring a light jacket – the ruins, temples, and tombs of the Ancient Egyptians are best enjoyed in cooler climes when you won’t work up too much of a sweat.

December in Egypt

Philae Temple in Aswan, Egypt

December is one of the most popular times to be in the country, and if you want to avoid the crowds, it’s never the best time to visit Egypt.

It’s sunny across the country, although the Mediterranean coast can be hit by the odd storm or rainy day.

It’s still hot, with temperatures hovering in the mid-twenties in most destinations.

The Red Sea beach resorts are always popular over Christmas and New Year, as families head here from Europe looking for winter sun and a hot place to spend their holidays.

You’ll be paying high season prices, and sharing the beaches with a lot of other tourists.

Head south to the famous cities of Luxor and Aswan, and take a Nile River Cruise between the two.

While it’s definitely going to be busy, because the weather is perfect for exploring archaeological sites all day, it’s the best time to be in this part of Egypt.

January in Egypt

David Stock at Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt

January is likely to be just as busy as December, although visitor numbers will definitely start to fall off towards the middle of the month after the rush of the holiday season is over.

If you want a winter sun getaway then head to the Red Sea for beaches, snorkeling, and diving.

If you’re a fan of all things Ancient Egyptian, then the weather is perfect for exploring iconic places such as the Pyramids of Giza or the Valley of the Kings, but you’ll be sharing the iconic sights with a lot of other tourists.

Culturally, this is the best time to visit Egypt if you’d like to learn more about the Coptic Christian communities.

January 7th is the most important day in the Coptic calendar, as this is when they celebrate Christmas. Head to the cities of Cairo or Alexandria to see and experience more.

February in Egypt

David Stock at Edfu Temple in Egypt

Compared to December and January, February is a lot quieter and it’s a great time to explore Egypt if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel.

The weather is getting much warmer already, but you might catch a few of the last winter storms, although these are a rarity even on the coast.

This is a great time to explore southern Egypt. Take a Nile River cruise from Luxor to Aswan, and enjoy the archaeological sites before it gets too hot. The crowds won’t be quite as large as the previous two months.

Time your visit to coincide with the Abu Simbel Festival, held each February at the famous Abu Simbel Temples.

These are found on the Sudanese border, just a short journey from Aswan, and were built thousands of years ago by Ramesses II. The festival is a throwback to the region’s thousands of years of history and culture.

Egypt Spring Months

Felucca boats on the Nile River in Aswan, Egypt

The weather really starts to warm up across Egypt as you leave winter behind and enter the spring season.

The Nile River is green and verdant after the winter rain, while there are many festivals and celebrations across the country.

This is a great time for shoulder season travel, before the busy summer months, but be aware of when important religious events such as Ramadan are, as this generally tends to happen around April and May.

March in Egypt

Lina Stock at the Great Sphinx in Egypt

March is another shoulder season month, and it’s a great time to visit Egypt if you want to escape the crowds.

On the Red Sea, you can score cheap deals on flights and all-inclusive packages. With warmer waters and lots of sunshine, it’s really not a bad time lounge on the beaches or to enjoy some Scuba diving.

You’ll have fewer crowds in the south as well, but remember that the desert is starting to heat up in March.

In reality, it’s a good time to visit the temples and pyramids before the heat and the crowds of summer.

April in Egypt

David Stock at Edfu Temple in Egypt

April can be a mixed bag in terms of visitor numbers because over the Easter holidays you’ll find plenty of tourists arriving.

Try to avoid these weeks if you want to visit in April.

Travel south to Luxor and Aswan, or stick around Cairo and explore the Pyramids of Giza and other famous ancient sites, because, after this, visitor numbers will start to rise again, as will the heat.

Alexandria is glorious in April, with lovely Meditteranean weather, sunny days and clear skies.

Visit the famed Biblioteca Alexandria and the many catacombs and ruins that date back to the Greek and Roman era, when the city was one of the most important in the ancient world.

May in Egypt

Lina Stock at Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt

May is the last quiet month before the summer high season begins in earnest in Egypt, and oftentimes, this is the month when Ramadan is likely to fall.

This can be a unique festival to witness, although non-Muslims will need to be aware of the rules and local customs during the holiday so as not to cause offense.

Weather-wise, it’s getting much hotter in May, and temperatures are rising exponentially.

It’s not a good time to be in the desert, but you will enjoy the sun and cooling winds that are found on the Mediterranean coast and the Red Sea.

Egypt Summer Months

Hot air balloon flights over Valley of the Kings in Luxor - best time to visit Egypt

Summer is the high season and it’s the best time to visit Egypt if you’re looking for a beach holiday.

It’s not the best time if you can’t handle the heat and the crowds. It’s hot and it’s busy, all through summer.

June in Egypt

Lina Stock at Abu Simbel in Egypt

June is the start of peak season travel in Egypt, and prices for flights, accommodation, and tours will begin to go up.

It’s not quite as busy as July and August are going to get, so it’s a good time to visit the resorts on the Red Sea before the huge crowds arrive.

With warm waters, it’s a great time to snorkel and scuba dive on the Red Sea too, or you could even dive below the waves of Alexandria Harbour.

This is where you’ll find the uniquely preserved remains of Cleopatra’s Palace many centuries after it was lost below the waterline.

July in Egypt

Camel train at the Giza pyramids in Egypt

July is busy because this is when the school holidays usually begin in earnest across Europe.

It’s guaranteed to be hot, and in the desert, temperatures will routinely rise well above 40 degrees Celsius in the middle of the day. Even the night time can be unbearably hot.

The heat doesn’t stop people visiting, although admittedly most vacationers tend to stick to the resorts, where you’ll find busy beaches all through June.

August in Egypt

Lina Stock at Abu Simbel in Egypt

August will be just as busy as July because it’s still peak season and it’s the summer holiday season in Europe.

Prices will be higher than other times of the year, and beaches and tourist attractions will be crowded.

It’s going to be too hot to be anywhere other than the beaches though, so if you are visiting Egypt in August then brave the crowds and stick to the Red Sea resorts.

This way you can cool off in the swimming pools or in the sea.

Egypt Fall Months

Horse carriage at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt

The fall season is a great time to explore Egypt’s interior, as the heat starts to dissipate.

Compared to summer, it’s going to be incredibly quiet through the fall months, and it’s a great time to grab a great deal on flights and tours.

September in Egypt

View from the Philae Temple in Aswan - best time to visit Egypt

If you can wait out the summer and travel in September, then this could be the best time to visit Egypt.

The weather is still undeniably hot, but things are starting to cool down, especially away from the coast.

You can head south to explore the ancient sites around Luxor or cruise along the Nile River to Aswan and the Abu Simbel Temples.

Visit the Red Sea for good post high season deals on resorts.

October in Egypt

Hot Air Balloon over the West Bank in Luxor, Egypt

October is quieter than September, and it’s much cooler too. This is the perfect time to start visiting Egypt’s most famous attractions, and places that will soon become busy again in the winter.

Explore the archaeological delights of Luxor and Aswan, take in the bustling streets of Cairo and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Or uncover the hidden history of Alexandria, while enjoying the warm climes of the Mediterranean.

November in Egypt

David Stock at the Red Pyramid outside Cairo - best time to visit Egypt

November is the last shoulder month before the high season starts again in December.

It’s much cooler in November and it’s a beautiful time to explore Egypt, as you’ll avoid the worst of the summer heat and miss the worst of the winter crowds.

Take the opportunity to visit iconic destinations and famous tourist attractions, or get a steal on a resort on the Red Sea.

After this, it’s only going to get busier.

10 best places to visit in Egypt for an unforgettable holiday

Egypt is a treasure trove for lovers of history, aquatic adventures and culture. find your way to the best spots with our guide.

best places to visit in egypt in october

O ne of the cradles of civilisation, Egypt packs in more history than you can shake a textbook at. Home to the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, The Great Pyramid of Giza, this country is positively littered with pyramids, tombs, temples — and a new breed of museums to show off all the discoveries. One of the best ways to see Egypt’s ancient history is to take a cruise on the Nile, the world’s longest river.

But Egypt’s appeal extends far beyond its ancient sites. Scuba divers in the know come to marvel at the Red Sea reefs, and the country has long been a winter sun favourite for shivering Europeans, with hundreds of resorts lining the eastern coast. Most visits to Egypt start in Cairo, though more direct flights are arriving from Europe and the Middle East to Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. Here’s our pick of the best places to visit in Egypt.

As chaotic as it is captivating, the Egyptian capital of Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africaand the Middle East. At the heart of downtown on Tahrir Square is the dusty pink Egyptian Museum, packed to the rafters with display cases of ancient artefacts, though the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza could steal its crown (and a lot of its treasures, including the famous 23-karat solid gold death mask of Tutankhamun).

To the east, the neighbourhood of Islamic Cairo is a showcase of architecture through the ages, with mosques, madrassas (religious schools) and the maze-like medieval lanes of Khan el-Khalili, where traders have been touting their wares since the 14th century.

Across the Nile River is the main reason many travellers come to Cairo. The Pyramids of Giza crown a plateau and are visible from elevated points in the city on clear days. The Great Sphinx lies protectively at their feet, and the brave can even scramble around inside the steamy structures.

Make it happen

Stay in the centre of it all at the Nile Ritz-Carlton, whose central location backs onto Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Museum.

All Egypt itineraries with Exodus start in Cairo with a visit to the Pyramids of Giza.

A visitor at the Step Pyramid of Djoser (Alamy)

The Pyramids of Giza certainly hog the spotlight, but they aren’t the only pyramids in the vicinity. Take a day trip from Cairo to Saqqara and Dahshur to see the Step Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, two even earlier examples that show how the ancient Egyptians worked to perfect the architecture. Part of the vast Saqqara necropolis, the Step Pyramid of Djoser was constructed in the 27th century BC for a Third Dynasty pharaoh, some 120 years before Giza.

Nearby in Dahshur, the Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid are a step closer to obtaining the smooth pyramid sides seen at Giza, though the maths weren’t quite right — notice how the angle of the Bent Pyramid was altered during construction. The interiors of all three of these pyramids are open for visitors to climb around.

Saqqara and Dahshur are on the western side of the Nile, closest to Giza. Stay at the historic Marriott Mena House at the foot of the Pyramids of Giza for a pyramid-filled day out.

Riviera Travel includes a visit to Saqqara on its 15-day river cruise Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Aswan.

The entrance to Luxor Temple (Getty Images)

Often touted as the “world’s greatest open-air museum”, Unesco-listed Luxor has a rich cache of historical treasures like few other places on the planet. The pharaohs of the New Kingdom moved their capital here, then called Thebes, and constructed mighty monuments to their gods and themselves, many of which still stand today.

Like many ancient Egyptian cities, Luxor is split in two by the Nile: the east side, where the sun rises, was seen as the “land of the living”, while the west was considered the “land of the dead” and the setting sun. Karnak Temple is the most impressive site on the east bank, and it’s one of the largest religious temple complexes in the world, covering nearly 500 acres. Karnak is connected to Luxor Temple by the Avenue of Sphinxes and fronted by colossal statues of Ramses II. This certainly isn’t the last you’ll see of this prolific pharaoh.

Across the Nile River, the Valley of the Kings is the New Kingdom’s royal necropolis, and the magnificent tombs are carved and painted floor to ceiling with spells and blessings for a smooth journey into the afterlife.

Many Nile cruises depart from Luxor and head south to Aswan, taking a few days to stop at temples along the way.

On the quieter West Bank, the personality-filled rooms at Al Moudira inject luxury and local character into a Luxor stay.

Wendy Wu’s 11-day Dreams of Egypt tour takes in all of Luxor’s major sights before embarking on a Nile cruise.

• Best Nile cruises • When is the best time to cruise the Nile?

A Nubian woman in Gharb Soheil (Alamy)

Laid-back Aswan is one of the best places in Egypt to enjoy the Nile. Cruises arrive and depart from here, and you can also hop aboard a smaller felucca (a traditional wooden sailboat) and skirt around the Nile islands. In fact, going by felucca is the easiest — and sometimes the only — way to see some of Aswan’s sights, including the Tombs of the Nobles and the colourful, mural-covered Nubian village of Gharb Soheil. South of the Aswan Low Dam, the Temple of Isis at Philae is set on a photogenic island studded with palm trees. At the end of the day, a sundowner on the terrace of the historic Old Cataract Hotel, built in 1899 by Thomas Cook and namechecked by Agatha Christie in Death on the Nile , is a classic Aswan experience.

For history with a side of sundowners, the Old Cataract hotel is unbeatable. For a more local experience, hop across the Nile to the Nubian village of Gharb Soheil to stay in the Instagram-ready, whimsically painted domed rooms at Kato Dool.

Newmarket Holidays’ 11-day Cairo, Luxor and Nile Cruise includes an exploration of the attractions of Aswan after disembarking from your boat.

5. Abu Simbel

The Great Temple of Ramses II (Getty Images)

Less than 25 miles from Egypt’s border with Sudan, Abu Simbel is the last tourist stop on the Egyptian portion of the Nile. The Great Temple of Ramses II is guarded by four colossal 20m-high statues of its namesake pharaoh. The temple is aligned so that twice a year (in February and October) the first rays of the sun illuminate the interior statues of Ramses II and the gods Ra-Horakhty and Amun. A smaller nearby temple is dedicated to Ramses II’s favourite wife, Nefertari, and the goddess Hathor. Most travellers visit Abu Simbel as a day trip from Aswan by plane or bus.

Most travellers visit Abu Simbel on a day trip from Aswan by road or air; however, the village itself has some accommodation options. Try Eskaleh Eco-Lodge for welcoming Nubian hospitality and traditional architecture.

Take a road trip to Abu Simbel with an optional excursion on Exodus’s nine-day Nile Cruise itinerary. You hit the road at 4am, but seeing Abu Simbel early is worth it.

6. Sharm el-Sheikh

Pleasure boats in the port at Ras Mohammed National Park (Alamy)

At the southernmost tip of the Sinai peninsula, Sharm el-Sheikh provides endless days of sun and sandy fun. This resort town caters to those who need an escape as well as energetic types who prefer to peel themselves off the sunlounger and get active. On Sharm’s doorstep is Ras Mohammed National Park, which makes a delightful day trip for scuba diving and snorkelling amid the vibrant coral reefs and schools of fish that swirl like colourful clouds.

Mövenpick Resort Sharm el-Sheikh offers the best of all worlds, with private amenities but one of Sharm’s main hubs within walking distance.

7. Saint Catherine

Saint Catherine’s Monastery (Alamy)

Cradled in the Sinai peninsula’s mountainous interior among Egypt’s highest peaks, Saint Catherine’s is the oldest inhabited Christian monastery in the world, established by Byzantine emperor Justinian in AD548, and surrounding the bramble that is considered to be the biblical burning bush. For some, Saint Catherine’s is a place of pilgrimage, but even if you’re not a devotee, making the trek up Mount Sinai (also known as Jebel Musa, or Mount Moses) for sunrise is a spiritual experience no matter what you believe. The crowds pour out from tour buses at 4am to start the climb, but for a more immersive experience, arrange to camp overnight near the summit with the Bedouin guides at Wilderness Ventures Egypt. A Bedouin guide is mandatory to visit Mount Sinai at any time.

Most travellers visit Saint Catherine on a day trip from Sharm el-Sheikh or Dahab, booked through their resort. For an in-depth look into the region’s Bedouin history and culture, sign up for Exodus’s 12-day Bedouin Trails of Jordan & Egypt tour, which climbs Mount Sinai for sunrise.

8. Hurghada

You’ll encounter all kinds of colourful sealife amid the coral of Hurghada

Similar to Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada is home to a glut of Red Sea resorts that often make good-value getaways. Chill out on the beach or go snorkelling or scuba diving in the crystal-clear water that’s filled with multicoloured coral and marine creatures, including highlighter-yellow butterflyfish, pouty-looking triggerfish and pipe-thin cornetfish.

Serry Beach Resort is one of the best in Hurghada. Monochromatic accents punctuate its Arab-style architecture of breezy corridors and arches, and the resort offers a huge menu of on-site activities.

• Best hotels in Hurghada • Best things to do in Hurghada

Shopping on Lighthouse Road near the seafront in Dahab (Alamy)

A haven of hipsters and digital nomads, welcoming Dahab is as chilled out as Egypt comes. Quirky cafés line the seafront, where remote workers sip coffee and watch wetsuit-clad figures emerge from the water after a successful scuba diving adventure. Divers and snorkellers have plenty of excellent sites to pick from right in town, and underwater canyons and vertical walls of coral await to the north at the Bells and the infamous Blue Hole.

On the town’s northern fringes, Dar Dahab is a well-designed, hip space filled with Bedouin-style cushions, rattan furniture and carved woodwork that’s suitable for short or longer-term stays.

10. Alexandria

Stanley Bridge in Alexandria (Alamy)

Founded by Alexander the Great in 332BC, Alexandria was one of the great intellectual cities of antiquity. Though the famous library was lost to fire, war or invaders (scholars still debate its final fate), the institution has been resurrected as Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern marvel with enough shelf space for eight million books. Ancient archaeological sites have survived in Alexandria, including the remains of the Roman-era Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa and Pompey’s Pillar, and the 15th-century caramel-coloured Citadel of Qaitbay on the coast.

While Alexandria has a decent selection of hotels, some parts of the city feel very faded, so some travellers opt for a day trip from Cairo.

The Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano is hands down the most luxurious property in this seaside city, with plenty of sophistication and romance.

G Adventures’ short and sweet Classic Alexandria Mini Adventure offers the best of the city on a quick visit from the capital.

The Best Places to Travel in October

By Caitlin Morton

Best Places to Travel in October Neuschwanstein Castle

As much as we love beach lounging in summer and exploring snowy wonderlands in winter, there’s something extra special about traveling during the fall. Aside from fewer tourists and lower prices, October brings harvest festivals, Halloween parties, and the best foliage of the year. (And those warm beaches are still open, if you’re willing to fly for them.) Whether you’re looking to view some spectacular fall foliage or escape to the warm Caribbean this year, these are 10 of the best places to travel in October.

Note: Due to the Delta variant of coronavirus, it’s a good idea to consider extra precautions if traveling this fall. We recommend investing in “ cancel for any reason ” travel insurance and only booking changeable flights and accommodations. It’s also crucial to obtain medical insurance that will cover you abroad, and to research different countries’ case and vaccination rates when choosing your destination.

Salem, Massachusetts

It’s Halloween this month, so where better to book a trip than America’s unofficial witching capital? Snag a room at The Hotel Salem or The Merchant (they’re both owned by Lark Hotels, famed for its funky makeovers of countless New England inns) and then make your way into town. Salem celebrates its connection to the occult all month with a program of events, including horror film festivals, séances, and a fair with psychics on hand to read your future. (See complete calendar here .)

During the festivities, it’s worth pausing to consider the history of Salem’s witch trials at the 1692 Salem Witch Museum. The museum recreates the trials using actual documents as the basis for its life-size stage sets, and hosts an exploration of witchcraft in all its forms through the ages.

Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is one of the best places to travel in October, as the month signals the height of springtime in the southern hemisphere. That means you can plan on tons of outdoor activities, from walking among spring blooms in Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden to touring vineyards in Franschhoek. You could also spend an entire trip hopping between Cape Town’s best beaches. Camps Bay Beach is worth visiting for the views of Lion's Head and the Twelve Apostles alone, as is Windmill Beach (a 10-minute walk from Boulders Beach) for its warm water and boulders you can jump off.

Stay at Readers’ Choice Awards darling Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel , 15-room Georgian-era townhouse tucked away in a residential street in Gardens (a fashionable neighborhood known for its restaurants, bars, and interior shops). The street-level luxury suites come with their own spacious sun terraces and private pools, making you feel like you’re in an incredibly beautiful private home.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Known as “the most photographed event in the world,” the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (October 2 to 10) does not disappoint, offering families and travelers the chance to get up close with hundreds of seven-story balloons ranging from cute animals to Darth Vader. You'll want to wake up before dawn to get a prime viewing spot for the Mass Ascension, when all the balloons rise together to the tune of "The Star Spangled Banner."

You can crash later that night at Hotel Chaco , a sleek, contemporary property with Native American–inspired art and architecture located in the heart of Old Town. That ideal location and perfect October weather means you can explore all the museums and markets downtown without breaking a sweat.

Del Carmen Island Loreto Mexico

Loreto, Mexico

We’re big fans of the Baja California Sur peninsula in Mexico, with its beautiful scenery and luxury resorts. While most tourists flock to Los Cabos , set your sights on the underrated city of Loreto. Located about 230 miles north of Cabo, the town is best known for its secluded, unspoiled setting on the Loreto Bay National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For stress-free planning, book a stay at Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa at the Islands of Loreto , where guests can enjoy scuba diving tours, cultural city tours, whale watching excursions, kayaking, surfing, and ATV desert tours. After a day spent adventuring, head back and unwind at the 39,000-square-foot Sabila Spa or one of the resort’s five swimming pools.

Aspen Colorado

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen may seem like a bit of an obvious choice (hello, mountains famously full of yellow leaves), but obvious isn’t always a bad thing. Hotel Jerome is a great place to set up camp, with a huge array of activities on tap for guests looking for an outdoor adventure—think horseback riding in the Rockies, riding a Jeep through alpine backcountry, and stand-up paddleboarding along the Colorado River. The hotel can also arrange day trips to the Maroon Bells, a pair of mountains that is one of the most photographed spots in the entire state. In fact, professionals are known to flock to the shores of Maroon Lake well before sunrise to nab that stunning fall shot.

Best Places to Travel in October Neuschwanstein Castle

The Bavarian Alps, Germany

An autumn trip to southern Germany is about so much more than Oktoberfest (which has been canceled for 2021 anyway). Fall may be the best season to visit the Bavarian Alps , when the weather is perfectly cool and the mountains transform into a technicolor dreamscape. The season is prime for outdoor enthusiasts as well, with areas like Berchtesgaden and Lake Tegernsee lending themselves to some epic scenic hikes. Shutterbugs are never disappointed by the Disney-esque Neuschwanstein Castle, whose white turrets look best against a backdrop of deep reds and oranges.

Spend at least a couple days tucked away in Hotel Bachmair Weissach , a modern alpine property located in the lake town of Tegernsee. With walls adorned with antlers, a cloistered courtyard, plaid carpets, and scalloped wood balconies off each of its 141 rooms, it will fulfill every romantic Bavarian fantasy you can think of.

View from Cherry Tree Hill to tropical coast of Barbados

Barbados made headlines in 2020 when it announced its Welcome Stamp visa for sun-seeking digital nomads. Valid for 12 months, the visa allows anyone earning over a certain salary to live and work remotely temporarily. If you’re not ready to commit to a year-long visit, it’s still worth flying down here in October. Book an oceanfront villa at The Crane , one of the country’s finest resorts, and spend a few days exploring the Bajan rum circuit.

Though it’s now ubiquitous across the Caribbean, rum was formally first distilled at the Mount Gay Rum headquarters in 1703. Head to its visitor center and you’ll be able to learn more of that history, as well as sample a range of great dark and white blends. Then head to Bathsheba Beach on the east coast—one of the best stretches of sand in the world—where you'll find big, surf-able waves and shallow pools carved by the coral reef right off the shore.

Asheville South Carolina

Asheville, North Carolina

Don't discount the South when it comes to fall foliage, especially the Blue Ridge Parkway and Carolina mountains. Make Asheville your home base for exploring the parkway in both directions: to the south, drive to Pisgah National Forest, filled with waterfalls and fall foliage–covered hills on view from Looking Glass Rock, and to the north, the curving Linn Cove Viaduct hugs Grandfather Mountain, offering some of the parkway’s most iconic views.

Get a dose of the funky lifestyle in downtown Asheville: sample the African-meets-Appalachian food at Benne on Eagle , browse fem theory and queer lit at Malaprop's Bookstore and Cafe , and drink a Strawberry Milkshake IPA at Highland Brewing Company . Stay at Asheville's best boutique property, The Foundry Hotel, for comfortable rooms with exposed brick walls, a chic lobby bar, and a restaurants serving up modern spins on comfort food.

Santorini

Santorini, Greece

More than two million people visit Santorini each year. To dodge those crowds—and to experience a more authentic side of the island—plan your trip during the off-season in October and November. Visit Red Beach and take in the legendary sunsets in Oia, of course, but then search for some more under-the-radar spots. Only one in 20 travelers to Santorini goes to Akrotiri, an almost perfectly preserved ancient city and archaeological site. Visit some wineries at Vlychada, or hire a guide to take you around Akrotiri.

Then get some rest at Incognito Villa , located at the end of a dirt track on the beach near Monolithos and the airport. It has its own garden and a little pool, and you can walk in either direction along the beach to a taverna. Even in the height of summer, it is amazingly quiet.

Hudson Valley New York

Hudson Valley, New York

If you're looking to totally lean into the cider-sipping, sweater-wearing, pumpkin-picking vibe of fall, look no further than the Hudson Valley. Aside from offering primo leaf peeping opportunities, October is the best time to go apple picking or sample some hard cider made from local produce at Angry Orchard. Alternatively, take in a movie at the Four Brothers Drive-In Theater or celebrate Halloween with the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze in the grounds of Van Cortlandt Manor ( advance reservations required). More than 7,000 pumpkins are displayed there each night, including a 25-foot-tall Statue of Liberty, all of which are carved onsite by a team of 1,000 volunteers.

Look to Warren Street in the heart of town for accommodations: either at the retro Rivertown Lodge , complete with wood fire burners and bicycles to borrow, or the relatively new Maker Hotel , filled with one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture and a restaurant serving up ingredients sourced from local farms.

Best places to visit in october 2024.

Fall is here, and in many regions the leaves have changed and are ready for their close-up. While in some destinations you'll still have to contend with foliage-seeking tourists, other top getaways in October offer a bit more breathing room after the departure of summer crowds. Taking into account these factors, as well as expert opinion, traveler sentiment and array of sights (among other details), U.S. News chose the best places to visit in October. Have a favorite? Vote below to influence next year's list.

Yellowstone National Park

Zion national park, british virgin islands, serengeti national park, buenos aires, black forest, asheville, nc, acadia national park.

best places to visit in egypt in october

If "White Lotus" piqued your interest in a Sicilian getaway, but you don't quite have the budget to splurge, plan a trip for October when the summer tourists have gone home. At the start of the offseason, hotel rates in this Italian paradise can drop to almost half of their peak prices. You'll still be able to squeeze in some of the season's last beach days as temperatures typically remain in the 70s. What's more, the streets are likely to be less crowded, so you can easily spend your days sauntering through the region's quaint villages and sampling exquisite Mediterranean cuisine.

best places to visit in egypt in october

If you can handle declining temps (think: 40s and 50s), you'll be rewarded with a wonderful time of year to visit Yellowstone National Park. October sees far fewer visitors than peak summer months, which means you'll encounter less traffic and won't have to jostle for a spot at top attractions like Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring. Plus, you might catch the tail end of elk rutting season and hear their otherworldly bugling. This national park's roads close for the season in November, but keep in mind that some lodging options close earlier, so book your accommodations early.

best places to visit in egypt in october

Pleasant weather, more manageable crowds and fall foliage – what's not to love about Zion National Park in October? Daytime temperatures in the 70s will keep you comfortable for activities like hiking and rock climbing, but pack layers and prepare for cooler temperatures in sunless hiking spots like the Narrows. What's more, leaf peepers won't want to miss taking the Canyon Overlook trail to catch a glimpse of the autumn colors. While fewer travelers tend to visit this national park in October than the summer months, you'll want to avoid peak times like fall break.

best places to visit in egypt in october

Beat the winter holiday rush with an autumn trip to the British Virgin Islands. Though October falls in the middle of the rainy season, this typically means brief squalls rather than days full of rain, and low season travel will mean fewer tourists and great rates on accommodations. The Moorings Interline Regatta also takes place in October, delighting sailors and landlubbers alike with its exhilarating sailboat races and nightly parties. However, these great rewards do come with a bit of risk, as well. Since this island lies in the hurricane belt, you may want to consider travel insurance for a fall trip here.

Summer is undoubtedly the most popular time to visit Iceland's capital, so an October visit will give you access to top sights sans crowds. Plus, as a trade-off for shorter days and cooler weather, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the northern lights this time of year.

Serengeti National Park's wildlife-viewing opportunities are incomparable, and visiting in October at the end of its dry season offers certain benefits. October is one of the Tanzanian park's warmest months, with average temperatures sitting in the low 80s. And while you might encounter a few short rain showers toward the end of the month, October is generally still quite dry, meaning you'll find fewer mosquitos and sparse vegetation – which makes it easier to spot animals – during game drives. Strolling the tree-lined Philosopher's Path or taking in the leafy views from the Kiyomizu-dera Temple's verandah will leave you with unforgettable memories of this Japanese city. Plus, the island experiences some of its warmest weather (think: daytime temps in the high 80s) come October, so you can stretch out and enjoy various water sports on popular white sand shores like Eagle Beach and Palm Beach. best places to visit in egypt in october

While Germany's Bavaria region and its raucous Oktoberfest celebrations garner a lot of attention every fall, the Black Forest in southwestern Germany offers a quieter escape into nature. Despite its many evergreens, the Black Forest is one of the best destinations in the country for fall foliage. Take in the colors while driving along the Black Forest High Road, riding the Feldberg cableway or boating on Lake Schluchsee. Though you may encounter rain, the Black Forest (the birthplace of Grimm's Fairy Tales), offers plenty of enchanting villages and cozy towns to duck into.

Kenya: Be your own Vasco de Gama and discover one of the best corners of Africa

Kenya is a fascinating, exotic African country that is not yet known to many travelers. Just to get there, you do need to spend a lot of time traveling. But as soon as you see the picturesque flora and fauna of this country, you will understand that the treacherous journey was all worth it.

Best vacation spots in Kenya

If you’re in search of only the most pleasant memories on a measured and unhurried vacation, Kenya will surely offer you the following cool places.

Mombasa-experience an intricate combination of African, Arab, and European cultures

Mombasa has a long, diverse history with various African, Arab, and European traditions that have made their way to the Kenyan city and made it a special place. Winding medieval streets, the Portuguese fortress of Fort Jesus, and the souvenir-filled Makupa Market are perfect places to walk in the early morning or in the evening before the sun goes down. When it’s daytime, and the sun generously provides warm rays, go to the local beaches-the shade of the palms will be a natural protection on particularly hot days.

Safaris in Kenya are iconic. Take time to visit the Shimba Hills to spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, and other representatives of the animal world.

Spend your vacation in Lamu – A cool place without any cars

If you are looking for an unusual place to visit in Kenya, you want to visit Lamu. Its narrow streets make it impossible to drive in a car, so leave behind car noise for a while and let your feet take you to all the magnificent corners of Lamu. Moreover, there are tonnes of comfortable facilities made relaxation: private houses that are more reminiscent of small Arab inexpensive hotels or luxurious estates and villas with strange designs located on the ocean. After walking around the quaint medieval streets, head for the delightful Shela beach, where the purest transparent water, palm trees, and a wide strip of white sand await you.

Find a mix of European and African culture in Malindi

Malindi perfectly preserved its local ethnic features while developing an excellent service for travelers. On the one hand, there are all the modern benefits like five-star hotels and a vast array of entertainment and cuisine-on the other hand; it still has narrow, ancient quarters with medieval buildings. Make sure to visit the 520-year-old stone cross of Vasco de Gama, the first European to encounter Kenya. The clear water on the coast is perfect for diving and snorkeling.

Peru: Spend your holidays in the heart of South America

For many travelers who feel like they’ve “seen and done it all,” Peru offers a sense of mystery and intrigue-a final frontier full of history, culture, and natural beauty. You can see fascinating ruins, try culinary delights like guinea pig meat, and catch the waves of the Pacific Ocean.

Best vacation spots in Peru

Peru is a place for thrill seekers, so let’s see where you can find your next adventure.

Arequipa – A travel destination you’ll call “a home away from home”

The name of the city of Arequipa translates to “let’s stop here”-and when you get here, you will silently add “forever.” And it’s no wonder when you see the city’s wide streets lined with colorful houses made of white stone in the Spanish colonial style of the late 18th century. Numerous architectural sights will be a wonderful background for your shots: Monasterio de Santa Catalina, the Jesuit church of La Campañía, the Casa Ricketts mansion, and the Casa del Moral mansion.

Discover the Amazon jungle in the nicest weather in Iquitos

Iquitos is not as large and wealthy as other Peruvian metropolitan areas, but a couple of nearby unique places outshine the cities. Hire an auto rickshaw and discover the Amazon jungle, which can be reached by boat from Iquitos in an hour. This is where you can feel the majesty of nature: the humming, the constantly-moving jungle that represents a unique organism linked with the river washing the roots of ancient trees. Belén is another nearby village that’s also worth your time.

Lima – An iconic place for history enthusiasts

Lima is the capital of Peru and has some wonderful colorful landscapes with coastal cliffs. The capital city is sometimes referred to as “the city where the sun never shines” because of its weather peculiarities.

Nevertheless, the city is fantastic and holds so many gripping stories, like the one about an awful earthquake that happened in the 18th century that destroyed the central square of Plaza de Armas. A key sight you need to check out is the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, which houses the tomb of the founder of Lima and the first European to encounter Peru (and, subsequently, conquer a native empire that existed there), Francisco Pizarro.

Egypt: Take a trip back in time during a warm October

The ancient country of Egypt has such a rich cultural heritage and tradition that it is impossible to take all of it in at once. Many tourists visit this country repeatedly because they want to see as much as they can: the rich coral reefs, the Red Sea, the wide sandy beaches, the pyramids, the holy mountain of Moses, and much, much more.

Best vacation spots in Egypt

Let’s see what top Egyptian places are waiting to be explored for your October holiday.

Makadi Bay- A top place for those who deeply appreciate privacy and calm

Makadi Bay is located between vibrant Safaga and Hurghada. But unlike those places, this spot looks like a secluded corner in paradise. The beaches there are wide and uncrowded, and two beautiful coral reefs give you an excellent opportunity to witness the underwater life of the Red Sea.

Even if you get bored and want to party, you can venture to noisy Hurghada in a matter of minutes.

The “Egyptian Venice” of El Gouna – For a honeymoon that will impress even those who have been to Egypt many times

El Gouna is a truly marvelous resort, known for its amazing architecture, lagoons, sandy beaches and coral reefs. You can easily get to the islands separated by canals by taking a small boat along the water. A unique experience that you’ll cherish forever.

Enjoy parties and fun tourist attractions in Hurghada

Hurghada is a lure for young people from all over the world, but it would be wrong to say that this resort is only for youth and parties. A family vacation is also perfect here, but the number of discos, nightclubs, and other attractions is genuinely astonishing.

Prominent day excursions to the pyramids, Alexandria, or Luxor are also convenient and not far from Hurghada, which makes it the perfect place to base yourself on your holiday.

Frequently asked questions

France is the most visited country in the world. Because of the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, it has gotten hard to compare the popularity of countries due to severe travel restrictions. Nevertheless, in 2018 and 2019, France welcomed 90 million guests from all over the world.

Earplugs can help when you travel in a noisy vehicle or stay at a hotel in the city center. Plug adapters allow you to charge your phone when sockets differ from your home country. Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen even if you're traveling to cloudy places like Stockholm or London. And, indeed, a corkscrew will come in handy if you fancy a glass of vino.

We recommend the Tetris method: fill every inch of space (shoes should be stuffed with socks and put together, heel-to-toe, at the bottom of the suitcase). Roll clothes instead of folding them. It helps save a bit of space and avoid wrinkles. Also, keep liquids within easy reach: Airport luggage control sometimes asks you to pull out all liquids when going through security.

Start by allocating your budget and decide where and when to go. Then, find a suitable flight and accommodation. Remember to exchange money in advance if needed. Prepare medical insurance and make copies of your documents. Of course, plan some things you’d like to do. ( Stories from kiwi.com might help you come up with vacation ideas.) And finally, pack your suitcase and go!

  • Gold Coast, Australia—Straddie, Snapper (Superbank) for adrenaline surfing.
  • North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii—Waimea Bay and Banzai Pipeline for skilled surfers, and Sunset Beach on the North Shore for beginners.
  • The Great Barrier Reef, Australia—the world’s longest reef has all the tropical sea life and coral you could imagine.
  • Ko Tao, Thailand—magnificent underwater life and is a cheap place to visit.
  • Sinai Peninsula, Egypt—here, you will see not only the sea life but also a large shipwreck of a British vessel, SS Thistlegorm, that was attacked from the air and sunk in 1941. Feel as if you were investigating a great mystery with this sunken craft.

Best places to visit in October in USA

October is a fabulous time to travel, and these are some of the most ideal spots in these gorgeous United States to see. From popular fall foliage spots to destinations you’ve never heard of, let’s dive into the list!

1. The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina to Virginia

best places to visit in October USA winding road with bright red orange and green trees

Average temp:  high 62, low 41

Stretching 469 miles from the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (where it turns into the equally scenic Skyline Drive), the Blue Ridge Parkway is widely regarded as one of America’s most scenic roads.

More than 15 million people using the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) each year, making it the most visited of all the national park units in the United States. So it’s also arguably the most popular!

The BRP’s origins date back to 1935, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the historic initiative part of his New Deal. It was designed to improve American infrastructure and create jobs as a means to accelerate the nation’s economic recovery after the Great Depression.

It took until 1966 to construct the majority of the road, and another 21 years to finish the picturesque stretch from the Linn Cove Viaduct to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

The result is an epic and iconic road trip that dazzles with spectacular colors in the fall, when the leaves turn to sun-speckled gems in red, orange, and golden hues. It’s by far one of the most scenic fall drives in the US!!

An autumn drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway takes you through the Jefferson, George Washington, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forests; numerous impressive state parks (including NC’s Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak east of the Mississippi); and countless hiking trails, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and streams.

There are also some 200 breathtaking BRP overlooks as well as charming mountain towns such as Banner Elk, Boone, and  Little Switzerland .

The best of the parkway’s landmarks include Grandfather Mountain State Park, the Linville Gorge Wilderness, Looking Glass Rock, and Julian Price Memorial Park. Each offers opportunities to savor the splendor of America’s wilderness at its most pristine, preserved by FDR for future generations.

2. Bend, Oregon (one of the most underrated and best places to visit in October USA)

Average temp:  high 62, low 33

While Bend, Oregon is a fantastic destination year-round, the fall is a great time to visit this Central Oregon town. You’ll find far fewer crowds than in the summer months and the crisp autumn air is perfect for many outdoor adventures.

Bend is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, and October is a great time to experience Oregon’s high desert. Cooler autumn temperatures make it the perfect time of year to hit the nearby trails.

There are a variety of  hikes in Bend, Oregon  for all skill levels and in a diverse range of settings, from pine forests to snowcapped peaks to juniper and sage dotted deserts. You can also get out onto the water on a SUP or kayak or cruise through some of the famed Bend mountain biking trails.

A fun fall activity is to head to nearby Smith Rock State Park for beautiful views and a lovely riverside walk. Once you’ve had your fill, head to the ranch just outside the park that has a large pumpkin patch, food trucks and festive games for all ages.

October is the perfect time of year to hop around the different breweries around town to sample the local brews. If you’re a real craft beer enthusiast, you may want to participate in the Bend Ale Trail, which is run by the local tourism board. Collect stamps at each brewery you visit for a prize!

3. Mammoth Lakes, California

Average temp:  high 60, low 30

One of the best places to visit in October in USA is  Mammoth Lakes . It’s located in Eastern California and is one of the most underrated places to visit in the USA in the fall. The beautiful colorful trees with the mountains in the background make this a wonderful place to stay in October.

June Lake Loop is one of the best spots to experience the fall colors. There are many lakes to explore on the loop like Silver Lake, June Lake, Gull Lake, and Grant Lake.

The whole loop is filled with stunning yellow Aspen trees, and there are many spots to explore with these beautiful trees. Make sure to stop by Silver Lake Cafe for lunch and watch the stunning views of Silver Lake while you eat.

Another great spot to see fall colors is Convict Lake which is located southeast of Mammoth Lakes . The yellow Aspens are situated at the mountain base, so it is best to walk the whole loop.

You can also visit many of the lakes that are located in Mammoth Lakes Basin. They include lakes like Twin Lakes, Lake Mamie, Horseshoe Lake, Lake Mary and Lake George. It’s a magical area to explore in the early cool fall morning.

There are so many yellow colors in Mammoth Lakes. It is probably one of the most underrated areas to experience fall foliage, and one of the best places to visit in the US in October!

4. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (one of the best October vacation destinations)

Average temp:  high 46, low 29

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain is one of the most beautiful (and popular) national parks in the country.

Located about 2 hours away from Denver, this park takes time ans effort to explore with countless trails, waterfalls and even one of Colorado’s most popular “fourteeners” Longs Peak.

Rocky Mountain National Park is pure magic during fall, when the incredible golden colors come out in full display. The best time to see them is from mid-September through early October.

Another thing you should know about visiting RMNP during the fall is that weekends still might be busy, as more people come to take pictures and see thousands of amazing golden-hue Aspen trees. Crowds begin to dissipate in the fall, and if you want the ultimate experience, try to plan your visit for weekday.

To see the fall colors in their full glory, take a drive along the Trail Ridge Road that is open from Memorial Day until late October. The alpine highway is a perfect way to enjoy the the fall scenery at RMNP without getting out of the car. In fact, the Trail Ridge Road is one of the top Colorado bucket list activity!

Still, try to explore some trails. Take a hike or two to enjoy the fall colors , and if you plan on doing a more challenging trail at a higher altitude, make sure to bring some layers . Temperatures begin to drop in the fall, and it’s a good idea to bring a jacket with you, especially if you plan on camping here.

Note: through most of October, the park requires a timed entry permit. Plan your trip in advance and grab your permit here .

5. Door County, Wisconsin

Average temp:  high 56, low 41

Door County, Wisconsin likely isn’t the first spot to come to mind when thinking of amazing fall colors in the United States. However, the colors here are breathtaking , and there are many wonderful activities to enjoy in Door County during fall!

The colors begin changing during the end of September, and visitors hoping to see the leaves during their peak color should plan to visit the area in mid-October.

To see some of the best fall colors in Door County, try hiking in Peninsula State Park, Whitefish Dunes State Park, Cave Point County Park and The Ridges Sanctuary, just to name a few spots.

For those looking for a less active leaf-peeping experience, be sure to take a drive along Highway 42. You can also see the leaves from above at viewing platforms, such as the newly constructed Sturgeon Bay Maritime Museum Lighthouse Tower.

Fall is also a great time to visit the apple orchards in Door County. Be sure to stop by Wood Orchard Market, where you can get awesome seasonal products such as their special apple cider donuts!

With the cooler fall temperatures, cozying up to a fire during a traditional Door County fish boil is one of the best  things to do in Wisconsin  at this time of year. Fish Boils are fun to watch and delicious. Each boil master makes theirs a little differently but, you can count on all recipes using white fish and various vegetables and spices boiled in a large kettle over an open fire.

Door County is an underrated destination, and definitely one of the best places to visit in October USA!

6. San Diego, California

Average temp:  high 74, low 61

Listen, San Diego has amazing temperatures most of the year, so there’s not really a ‘bad’ time to go. However, as someone who’s traveled to San Diego many times in the fall, I can truly say that October is a fantastic time to visit this amazing city!

Less tourists visit San Diego in the fall, so there’s not as many limitations to amazing activities because of overcrowding. For instance, the San Diego Zoo is a fantastic spot to explore. It’s really enjoyable in the fall when you can see what you’re there to see, instead of waiting all the time.

An amazing activity in the San Diego area is kayaking in La Jolla Cove in October. Other top things to do include Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego and Coronado Island.

By the way, here’s an idea of how to spend a weekend in San Diego if it’s on your short list!

7. Oahu, Hawaii (top of the list for warm places to visit in October in USA)

warm places to visit in October in usa view of beach looking down with palm trees and blue water

Average temp:  high 84, low 69

The island of Oahu has beautiful weather throughout the year but fall is one of the best times to visit. At this time of year, you can expect fewer crowds around the island, plenty of days with clear blue skies and the island is still really warm so you can spend your time lying on the beach.

While it may be hotter in the summer months, the fall actually offers a more enjoyable temperature so you can get out and explore the island.

One of the highlights of any visit to Oahu is exploring the many beaches dotted around the island. The most beautiful beach on Oahu is Lanikai Beach , which is a palm tree lined stretch of brilliant white sand and crystal-clear blue water.

As it’s on the east side of the island the water is usually quite calm so it is ideal for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. If you are feeling energetic you can kayak out to the Mokalua Islands which are just a few hundred metres from shore.

Another great activity is to explore Kualoa Regional Park, which is where scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed. You can explore the park on foot or take a quad bike tour. The mountains here are unique with their deep ridges and tropical green coverings.

During a visit to Oahu you can also snorkel, surf, hike, visit local farms to try fresh fruit and so much more. It’s an amazing island and the weather in particular makes this a perfect fall getaway.

8. Acadia National Park, Maine (a top choice on this list of best places to visit in October in USA)

best places to visit in October USA view of multicolored fall foliage with ocean in distance

Average temp:  high 55, low 38

Acadia is among a very small group of US national parks with two genuine ‘peak’ seasons. Summer is naturally congested in Acadia, but fall is equally as busy and because of the spectacularly beautiful Autumnal foliage lighting up the park.

But striking colors aren’t everything and the fall season is loaded with other benefits in Acadia National Park.

Hiking conditions are cooler in September and October, which comes in particularly handy when climbing both of Acadia’s adrenaline pumping hikes – Beehive Trail and Precipice Trail.

Beehive and Precipice are the two outstanding hikes but there are a dozen other trails without ladder climbing elements. All of which summit with remarkable views over the Gulf of Maine, gorgeous lakes, tiny islands and of course mountain sides covered in vibrant orange, yellow, red and green trees.

Epic sunrises are one of Acadia’s greatest assets and from the summit of ultra-popular Cadillac Mountain, you can be among the first people in the US to see the sun rise over the eastern horizon. In fall, sunrise is over an hour later than in summer, which means a slightly less agonizing alarm time.

To see the richest and most vivid colors, simply get stuck into all of the  best things to do in Acadia National Park , including hikes, lakes and carriage roads.

Pro tip: Be sure to book Bar Harbor accommodation a long way in advance to avoid missing out and always be out in the park early, parking spaces are limited and fill quickly each day.

Without a doubt, Acadia National Park is one of the best places to visit in October in USA.

Moab, Utah is an adventure city in the Southwest USA. With countless national parks, state parks and recreation areas surrounding Moab, it’s truly an amazing place to vacation.

It makes this list of the best places to visit in October in the USA because the weather usually hasn’t turned too wintry yet to enjoy the outdoors. And in the summer, Moab is packed with tourism!

If you love hiking, October is the perfect time to explore Arches National Park by foot or hike Canyonlands National Park . There’s also white water rafting, canyoneering, wineries and breweries and so much more.

Visitors should still book accommodations as far out as possible to get the best pricing. And be sure to book any tours in advance since Moab is a hot spot!

10. Asheville, North Carolina

Average temp:  high 68, low 46

Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best places in the US to experience fall.  The mountains are blazing with red, orange, and yellow leaves, the weather is perfect and the orchards are open.

While it may be the busiest time of year, it’s well worth the visit, but try to time it for a weekday visit instead of the weekends.

Be sure to spend some time walking around downtown Asheville and wandering the shops of the hip West Asheville area.  Visiting the Biltmore Estate is also a must-do.

There are so many amazing places to eat in Asheville, you’ll be able to try new, delicious food for every meal. Tupelo Honey and Gan Shan West are great options.

One of the best things to do in Asheville is driving part of the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway and the best time to  drive the Blue Ridge Parkway is fall . There are tons of hikes to waterfalls nearby like Linville Falls, Looking Glass Falls, or Moore Cove Falls.

Visiting Asheville in the fall makes all of these things even better than they normally are because you get to see them surrounded by stunning fall foliage, and who doesn’t love that?

For a lower impact way to enjoy the fall foliage, take a scenic drive through the Chinook Scenic Byway. It’s a 107 mile road that will take you through both Mount Rainier National Park and Mount Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest.

This drive provides a gorgeous tour of rushing waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and of course, panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains’ beautiful fall colors.

12. Boston, Massachusetts

Average temp:  high 62, low 47

Fall is the ultimate time to visit New England. From “leaf-peeping” in parks to crisp weather and apple-picking, it’s no wonder that visitors flock to the region from all over the world. If you’re seeking a combination of a city break and a fantastic fall destination, consider Boston.

Boston is teeming with history, green spaces, restaurants, and quaint neighborhoods to charm any visitor. Known as the “Cradle of the American Revolution,” don’t miss the Freedom Trail .

It’s a 2-mile, largely flat walking path that traces various sites of historical importance, such as the site of the Boston Massacre, the beginning of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, and the Battle of Bunker Hill in Charlestown.

The Trail kicks off at the beautiful Boston Common, the oldest city park in the U.S., dating back to 1634! As you walk, you will also discover other lovely fall destinations, such as the Beacon Hill neighborhood, with its cobbled streets and romantic buildings. Be sure to stop at Acorn Street, said to be the most-photographed street in the U.S .

For some Victorian splendor, visit Copley Square and the Back Bay, gazing up at its two beautiful churches and the Boston Public Library – certainly one of the city’s most picturesque places. In particular, the Library’s Bates Room, with its glowing lamps and vintage books, will give you major “back-to-school season” vibes.

Nearby, the Commonwealth Avenue Mall has gorgeous trees in blazing fall colors – one of the best places to check out fall foliage in town . There are also a variety of parks to discover if foliage is what you seek, including the Fens, the Emerald Necklace parks system and the Public Garden.

Boston is certainly one of the best places to travel in October in USA, especially if you love history!

13. Napa Valley, California (a favorite of these fall vacation ideas)

Napa valley california in autumn view of winery with fall foliage and road with hills

Average temp:  high 77, low 47

It’s without question that the beautiful  Napa Valley  region in California is one of the most beautiful fall travel destinations in the USA. The normally vibrant green of the grapevines turns to shades of yellow, gold and orange in Napa Valley. And as the weather cools, the leaves start to fall, leaving a carpet of orangey gold underfoot.

Napa Valley is actually a region featuring a collection of towns in between the vineyards and rolling hills. The area is a really easy drive from the best things to do in San Francisco , and will take around 1.5 hours. Having a car is a great idea in Napa Valley so that you are able to hop between wine tastings and towns at your leisure.

For a spectacular view, Artesa Wines is a great choice for a wine tasting as the large-windowed cellar door sits stop a hill providing great panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

Auburn James, just outside St Helena, is also a beautiful winery to stop in at, with a gorgeous tasting room. It is worth noting that booking in advance for your tastings is always a good idea and usually involves a small payment.

Once you’ve finished your wine tastings, head into the township of St Helena for dinner at the Farmstead – a stellar farm to plate restaurant pairing local wines with delicious food.

If you’re looking for the best place to visit in October USA, look no further than Chicago!  This fun city is vibrant and full of fall foliage! Plus, there’s a ton of things to do, indoor and out.

While you could spend a week in the city, a Chicago 3 day itinerary would be just about perfect.

A must-see is Millennium Park and the world-famous “Bean.” October is the  perfect time to witness the ever changing colors of autumn against the Chicago skyline.  The Bean is sort of like the cherry on top of that whole experience!

If you’re into museums, Chicago has so many options to choose from. The Art Institute of Chicago is located downtown within walking distance of many other main attractions. Enjoy works by Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and so many others!

15. Kauai, Hawaii (another favorite on this list of best places to visit in the US in October)

kauai view of the napali coast rugged Ridgeline with colorful fauna and deep blue ocean

Average temp:  high 76, low 60

It sounds cliché, but Hawaii is such a gorgeous destination that it’s always worth the visit! However, as someone who has been to this beautiful island chain many times, visiting in the fall is one of my very favorite times to go.

Kauai is one of the best places to visit in October in the USA because it’s the shoulder season so it’s more affordable. Hiking trails and parking lots are generally less full, making it a great time to vacation on this island.

Highlights in Kauai in October

  • See the Waimea Canyon and NaPali Coast. It’s absolutely stunning!
  • Helicopter tour of the island . Since 80% of it isn’t drivable, this is the best way to see this gorgeous place.
  • Hike the first 2 miles of the Kalalau Trail . You’ll have to get advanced reservations to enter the park, but it’s a breathtaking experience!
  • Hike the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail in southern Kauai near Poipu. This is and easy walk and offers ocean views nearly the entire way.
  • Snorkel on Anini Beach. It’s one of the most calm spots on the island and a great spot to see sea turtles! (Just be sure to respect Hawaiian culture, keeping your distance from sea turtles and not walk on the coral.)

For the best places to eat in Kauai, it’s easier to get reservations for restaurants (which is recommended for Kauai since it’s a smaller island) in October.

Hands down, Hawaii is one of the very best states to visit in October, and Kauai is phenomenal!

16. Lutsen, Minnesota (an underrated and absolute best fall vacations in the US)

best places to visit in October USA vivid red yellow and green trees

Average temp:  high 52, low 34

A fabulous, unknown place to many for enjoying fall leaf color and waterfalls can be found on the North Shore along Lake Superior in Minnesota. The North Shore is a special place and is only 2 hours north of Minneapolis-St Paul airport.

Duluth is where the journey begins, but for the full experience continue northward two more hours to Lutsen, Minnesota.  It’s truly one of the best places to visit in October in USA!

Let’s go! Start the adventure in Canal Park in Duluth, MN with the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge in the backdrop, while you explore the lighthouse pier and the newly renovated Lakewalk. Your drive will continue with must-see stops at Gooseberry Falls, Splitrock Lighthouse and Temperance River State Park.

Great accommodations can be found in Lutsen or Grand Marais, which are centralized for hiking and lots of activities in the area. An aerial gondola ride over the Poplar River and up the Moose Mountain is an experience not to miss to see the best fall leaf colors !

The window for peak fall color on the north shore varies anywhere from mid-September to early-October. However, the fall colors continue to be stunning in different types of forests at times beyond that window.

If you haven’t yet experienced the North Shore of Minnesota in the fall it’s one to add to your list! There are so many things to do and places to stay, it’s easy to find hotels on the North Shore MN as well.

Welcome to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the town National Geographic Travel has crowned “America’s Greatest Small Town.”

Portsmouth is the crown jewel of New Hampshire’s Seacoast and is perfectly situated within an hour from the White Mountains and an hour from Boston. Its location makes it the perfect New England destination for leaf peeping .

Downtown historical Portsmouth is very unique as it has colonial homes dating back to the 17th century. The most famous historical portion of the city is located in the south end. Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum, is New Hampshire’s oldest neighborhood to be settled by Europeans.

When visiting Portsmouth, be sure to check out all the small businesses downtown in an area of the city known as Market Square.

Portsmouth has more restaurants per capita than any other small town in the United States and is also home to dozens of charming boutiques. These boutiques come to life during the autumn with their seasonal decor and gift offerings.

Be sure to swing by Cup of Joe cafe for a cozy cup of salted caramel hot chocolate or their signature pumpkin spice latte. Lastly, the best thing about Portsmouth, NH is it’s a very walkable town, meaning no car is needed to explore this charming downtown this upcoming autumn season !

Average temp:  high 62, low 38 (varies)

The Eastern Sierra of California is a fabulous fall getaway destination in the USA. Fall color here is considered second only to New England , so you know you are in for a visual treat if you visit when the colors are at their peak!

From Lake Tahoe in the north to Bishop and Lone Pine in the south, the region is ablaze with foliage colors in the fall. You’ll be mesmerized by the show of yellow, oranges, and reds put on by aspens, willows and cottonwoods.

Taking a  Highway 395 road trip  is a great way to enjoy fall in the Eastern Sierra. If you prefer to have a base, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop are the largest towns in the area, and make for good bases from which to explore the beauty of the fall foliage all around you.

Doing scenic drives to enjoy the colors is the top thing to do in the fall. There are numerous paved and dirt roads you can drive. Both Inyo and Mono Counties offer the most beautiful drives. If you plan to drive the dirt roads, bring an appropriate vehicle.

The region is also known for its numerous spectacular lakes, so get out onto the water to enjoy the colors on the banks. Boating or kayaking is offered at many lakes. You can also go hiking, to view the colors up close: there are many legendary Eastern Sierra hikes from which to choose.

The Eastern Sierras are certainly one of the beset October vacations USA for lakes, mountains and hiking.

19. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (another underrated destination on this list of beset places to travel in October in USA)

best October vacations usa view of mountains with green trees and red bushes on partly could day

Average temp:  high 58, low 39

You’ll hit gold if you visit Shenandoah National Park during the autumn . . . plus orange, red and burgundy.

Shenandoah’s trees shed their green attire. Autumn’s palette paints the forest rusty orange, reddish yellow, and burgundy. Woodland creatures abound, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys and bats.

Located less than two hours from Washington DC, Shenandoah National Park attracts hikers and drivers. It’s also a favorite for singles and families to spend a weekend. But book your reservations early for either the park campgrounds or the Skyland Resorts and Big Meadows hotels, as they routinely sell out for the weekend.

The best time to visit is Monday through Thursday as the 105-mile Skyline Drive can turn into a traffic jam in October at peak foliage times. Skyline Drive weaves its way across western Virginia. Speed limit is 35 mph.

Your best bet is to enter the enter at the Front Royal Entrance, stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitors Center to get a panoramic family portrait and then head down the road. Stop at a convenient parking lot so you can hike through forests, scale rocky ledges, explore Appalachian Trail stops and watch waterfalls.

Or you can spend 3 hours traveling the entire length of the park on Skyline Drive. It ends at Rockfish Gap Entrance Station, which is also the northern entrance to the  Blue Ridge Parkway .  Shenandoah National Park features 200,000 acres of protected land. Stony Man and Hawksbill peaks exceed 4,000 feet.

This beautiful fall destination is the perfect getaway for families, couples, solos or even a friends’ trip!

Fall vacation ideas

From big cities to wide open spaces, there’s still plenty more places to see on this mega list of the best place to visit in October in the US!

20. Austin, Texas

water falling over rock into pond on cloudy day

Average temp:  high 82, low 60

What a perfect city for a fall getaway! As someone who’s visited Austin a few times, I can honestly say October was my favorite! The weather is way better (i.e. way less hot) than during peak travel season.

Visiting Austin in the fall is the perfect time for outdoor adventures. There’s so much hiking in Austin, plus fall festivals, outdoor drive-in movies, pumpkin patches and more.

If you love being on the water, Lady Bird Lake is a great spot for kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. For easy hiking in Austin , consider McKinney Falls State Park, Barton Creek Greenbelt or the popular Mount Bonnell.

Of course there’s live music all over Austin, and let’s not forget the mural hunting, either. Whether you’re going for Insta-worthy shots or just happen to walk by them on your way to get epic cone at Amy’s Ice Cream, you’re bound to find some fun artwork in the downtown area.

October is the perfect time of year to spend a weekend in Austin .

21. Newport, Rhode Island

lighthouse along ocean at dusk best places to travel in October in USA

Average temp:  high 62, low 53

One of the best fall vacations in the US is definitely Newport, Rhode Island. The area has peak fall foliage throughout October.

It’s a small town located on Aquidneck Island and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and sea cliffs. During the fall, you can walk around and enjoy outdoor activities without the crowds.

The majority of people drive to Newport from somewhere on the east coast. If you’re visiting from further away, you can fly into Providence, Rhode Island, only 45 minutes away.

One of the best  things to do in Newport  is see the history of the area on the Cliff Walk. You can walk 3.5 miles past the Breakers, one of the Newport mansions, around sea cliffs, and past a few beaches.

Newport’s mansions are renowned for their architecture and history. Some of the mansions were constructed in the early 19th century. Walk around the Wharves (Bannister’s and Bowen’s) in the evening for a variety of food and shopping.

Newport has lots of delicious places to eat. For breakfast, head to Cru Cafe near the Audobain Museum – a great way to start the day is with their blueberry stuffed French toast!

Your New England vacation wouldn’t be complete without some seafood. At the Lobster Shack, you can find fresh seafood. You can stay at the Marriott Newport if you want to stay in the heart of Newport. The hotel is within walking distance of the wharves.

22. Aspen, Colorado (a top choice for best places to visit in October in the US)

Average temp:  high 58, low 31

Perhaps one of the most beautiful fall foliage settings is in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The town of Aspen is perfect for a fall getaway because it’s surrounded by mountains and gorgeous aspen trees. I’m convinced it’s the among the best places to visit in October in USA.

Unlike some other destinations on this list which get vibrant reds and oranges during the fall, aspen trees turn a gorgeous yellow color. And when you get a mountainside full of them, it’s like eye candy!

A gorgeous day trip from Aspen is Maroon Bells Park. The feature is the mountain peak of Maroon Bells, which are surrounded by a lake and gorgeous aspen trees in the fall.

You could spend the day hiking the trails near the Maroon Bells if you love hiking and exploring the outdoors on foot. Note: you’ll want to plan ahead for this one, as reservations are now required to visit. Get your Maroon Bells reservations here .

Other things to do in Aspen include the Silver Queen Gondola, drive Independence Pass, visit the Ashcroft Ghost Town, and of course, shopping and dining in Aspen.

So whether you’re making the fall foliage in Aspen the focus of your trip or you’re combining it with an epic Colorado road trip , Aspen will surely be a highlight for a fall vacation!

23. New York City, New York

New York City skyline with pink sky and buildings lit up

Average temp:  high 64, low 50

New York City is amongst the best places to spend fall in the United States. The city is known for its beautiful fall colors and even a bit of Indian summer if you’re lucky.

New York can get very hot during the summer so the fall is the perfect time to enjoy the city without the heat. Fall is a lot more comfortable for sightseeing and you’ll love the views of the city.

If you’re traveling with older kids, this New York weekend itinerary with teens is the perfect mix of activities.

Head to the Highline Park which is a former elevated railroad track that has been converted into a walkway. It’s the perfect way to see the city without having to deal with the traffic and busy streets!

For an even better view of the city, you need to go all the way to the top of the One World Trade Center . This modern skyscraper is a must-see and truly the best place to take pictures of the city.

Afterward, head to the river for an evening cruise. There are tourist boats that will take you around the Hudson and East River.

However, for a more affordable option just take the ferry to Jersey or Staten Island. The ride won’t be as long but tickets only cost a few dollars and you’ll get to avoid the tourist crowds.

A trip to New York City is one of the best October vacations USA and one you’ll remember for a lifetime!

24. Zion National Park, Utah (another favorite on this list of best places to travel in October in USA)

Zion national park large canyon looking down with trees and road best places to visit in October USA

Average temp:  high 66, low 39

Zion National Park is simply stunning any time of year. However, it’s especially amazing to visit this national park in the fall.  With dwindled crowds and less intense weather to worry about, Zion is a great idea for a fall vacatio n!

If you want to hike the infamous Angels Landing, advanced planning is required, as the permit application process is during the summer. But, if you happen to get a permit for the hike, October is a phenomenal time to do it!

Of course, there are many things to do in Zion without hiking this challenging trail.  The much easier and yet equally rewarding Canyon Overlook Trail is a fun one, and can be completed for most fitness levels . At just a mile, this trail offers absolutely incredible views of the park!

A place for all ages, this park is magnificent for those young and old. An itinerary for Zion with kids includes other simple hikes like the Riverside Walk. Go further into the canyon by hiking The Narrows!

If you’re looking for a scenic drive in October, the Zion Mt. Carmel Highway Scenic Drive is incredible.  You won’t get the traditional vivid colors like some of the other destinations on this list of the best places to visit in October in US, but instead you’ll get amazing desert landscape and massive canyon views. So fun!

Be sure to pack plenty of water, layers for varying weather, hiking snacks and hiking gear like grippy hiking shoes , trekking poles and a hiking backpack .

Zion is absolutely one of the best places to go in October in USA, and a spot you’ll love!

25. Las Vegas, Nevada

best places in US to visit in October - Las Vegas strip with tall buildings at sunset

Average temp:  high 83, low 46

Las Vegas is the perfect destination to visit all year round but fall is a great time to visit. Temperatures begin to cool after the summer and so do the crowds. Plus, visiting mid-week will get you cheaper hotel rates, too.

Because temperatures are cooler, it means you can take advantage of some of the best outdoor attractions in the city, perfect for those visiting  Las Vegas for the first time .

Enjoy a Gondola ride at The Venetian, watch the Bellagio fountains or watch the volcano erupt outside The Mirage.

Rent a car or join a tour to visit the nearby national parks; Grand Canyon is the most popular day trip option from Las Vegas but October is a fantastic time to visit Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Alternatively, head to the unusual Magic Mountains or explore ‘The Neon Museum’ , a gallery of old signage from Vegas hotels of the past.

In the Bellagio hotel, you’ll find the gorgeous Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This is one of the best free things to do in Las Vegas and a great indoor activity to enjoy.

Each season, the gardens get transformed and the fall display is the most breathtaking. Expect oversized pumpkins, woodland creatures and tall, entertaining trees.

For more natural fall colours, head to one of the nearby parks ; Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, Paseo Verde Park and Gilcrease Orchard are top choices for this time of the year.

We recommend staying at The Cosmopolitan; it’s an elegant, stunning hotel and rates are normally super high but drop during the Autumn time.

26. Washington DC (Rock Creek Park)

stone bridge with fall foliage over river

Average temp:  high 69, low 46

Washingtonians and visitors don’t even have to hop in a car to enjoy peak fall foliage in a forest. Rock Creek Park is situated in the nation’s capital.

It’s the nation’s third oldest national park. Rock Creek Park was authorized in 1890.

Come October, the oaks, American beech and tulip trees suddenly change into the colors of the sunset—golden, orange and red. The 1,754-acre park features hikes for the hardcore as well as weekend adventurer.

If time permits, hike the two primary trails – Western Ridge Trail and Valley Trail. They run side by side. Imagine walking along a ladder laid on the ground.

Half-day hikes include Boulder Bridge, Milkhouse Ford, Rapids Bridge and Chestnut Oak/Mountain Laurels.

Or, devote a fall weekend to exploring Rock Creek Park . Tramp around the Civil War fortifications, watch interpreters at the Peirce Mill and Barn and visit the horses.

Bring a carrot or pull on your boots to ride a horse at the Rock Creek Park Horse Center, which is the only public riding facility in Washington DC.

Families will definitely want to visit the Nature Center and Planetarium. There are picnic areas scattered across Rock Creek Park, so fill a basket with ciders, sandwiches and apples.

27. Siesta Key, Florida (another favorite warm place to visit in October in USA)

white sand beach teal water red lifeguard stand

Average temp:  high 85, low 67

A Florida beach may not come to the top of mind when thinking about the best October vacation destinations. However, it’s the perfect time to go! And what better way to end this list than one of the top-ranked beaches in the USA!

Siesta Key, Florida is home to turquoise water and some of the finest white powder sand you’ll ever step foot on. While you won’t see much fall foliage here, you’ll see wide open beaches and affordable prices, compared to the peak summer season and those looking for a winter escape.

Fall is the ideal time to visit Siesta Key. The weather is very comfortable and the water is still warm enough to enjoy.

From excellent restaurants, shopping, kayaking and beaching, there’s seriously so many things to do in Siesta Key. Whether you’re looking for a fall getaway as a couple, family, solo or friends trip, you’ll love spending time in Siesta Key!

While a bit unconventional in terms of fall colors, this is still one of the best places to visit in October in the USA.

28. New Orleans, Louisiana

city streets of New Orleans at night with blurred people and lights

Average temp:  high 81, low 62

New Orleans is one of the top warm places to visit in October in USA. It’s a fantastic walking city so it’s an ideal location to visit in the fall when the summer weather has cooled a bit and the crowds have left.

New Orleans is a very family friendly city , even in the French Quarter, or a great destination for a romantic getaway or a fun girls’ or boy’s weekend.

A trip to New Orleans wouldn’t be complete without exploring the French Quarter. Here you can aimlessly walk along cobblestone streets, poking your head into cute shops, or eating your way through delicious food.

One of the must-try treats is a beignet, a cross between a french pastry and a doughnut. They are easily found in the French Quarter.

If you’re curious about the history of this area, take one of the many walking tours that will ultimately take you to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Here you will learn all about the ghosts, the after-life and even voodoo, themes found all over New Orleans.

A fantastic experience is visiting the National WWII Museum, a short walk from the French Quarter.

This is an exceptional interactive museum that focuses on the United States’ role in Asia and Europe during WWII. It’s a thrilling experience that will grab the attention of anyone even those that aren’t normally interested in history or wars.

There are countless exciting activities to do within a short drive of New Orleans. You can visit a plantation, like Oak Alley Plantation, and learn about slavery and a difficult part of US history. The drive there is beautiful and exploring the grounds is a lovely thing to do in the fall.

In addition, you can take a swamp tour which is a lot of fun. You hop on a bayou boat and explore some of the many surrounding swamps filled with crocodiles and other wild creatures.

October is the perfect time of year to visit New Orleans due to the cooling weather and reasonable crowds.
