How To Skip To The Front Of The Airport Security Line…Every Time

Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.

As air travel approaches pre-pandemic levels and airports become more crowded, security lines are getting longer. But there is a guaranteed way to make sure you get to the front of the line…every time you fly. That means less stress figuring out how far in advance to get to the airport , and less time actually waiting in line.

In this article, I cover the benefits of CLEAR and explain how it is different from TSA PreCheck. I’ll also teach you how to get free or discounted CLEAR membership so you can save both time and money!

Note that this article is not sponsored by CLEAR. I’ve been using CLEAR for the past four years and just want to share how useful it can be to frequent travelers.

What’s the Difference Between CLEAR and TSA PreCheck?

Cellphone showing CLEAR app (left) and example of a CLEAR booth (right)

Both CLEAR and TSA PreCheck are expedited security programs that travelers can join for a fee. However, CLEAR will get you to the front of the line more quickly.

At most major U.S. airports, there are two main security lanes: one for TSA PreCheck (usually shorter) and one for regular processing (usually longer.) TSA PreCheck is a popular program that many travelers are already members of. It costs only $85 for five years, which is great value. After a background check and quick interview, most people get approval. However, so many travelers are now enrolled in the program that the TSA PreCheck line can often get long.

CLEAR goes a step further. It is a third lane—complete with dedicated customer service agents and actual red carpet—that allows you to skip ahead.

CLEAR uses biometrics, i.e. facial recognition and fingerprints, to identify you at a kiosk. Then you’ll scan your boarding pass and a CLEAR representative will escort you to the front of the line. From there, you’ll go one of two ways…

If you have TSA Pre-Check in addition to CLEAR, then you’ll go to the front of the Pre-Check line. However, if you do not have PreCheck, then you will go to the front of the regular lane instead and have to do the usual screening, including taking off your shoes and removing any devices from your bags.

10 Free Things You Can Get at Airports

Why Should I Get CLEAR?

Basically, you don’t have to worry about how long the security line is going to be. You can leave home (or your accommodation) knowing that you just need to allow enough time to check-in, drop bags (if needed), and go straight to the front of the security line.

Given CLEAR is significantly more expensive than TSA PreCheck, this program is best suited to frequent travelers.

Where Can I Find a CLEAR Airport?

There are 30+ CLEAR airports in the U.S., including 19 of the top 20 (Charlotte is the only one missing.) It covers most of the major airport hubs, as well as secondary airports like Baltimore, New Orleans and Sacramento.

It’s worth checking the CLEAR locations page to see if CLEAR operates at your home airport and/or destinations that you often fly to. You’ll also want to check the operating hours as well as in which terminal/s a CLEAR lane is available.

For example, at my home airport of Austin, the CLEAR lane closes at 6:30pm. That means if I were to fly out on a 9pm flight, I’d want to know that I would not be able to access CLEAR before my flight.

CLEAR has also expanded to operate at sporting and entertainment venues like New York’s Madison Square Garden and Dallas’ Globe Life Field. Finally, it is increasingly becoming common to find a CLEAR lane at one-off events and festivals like Chicago’s Pride In The Park.

How Much Does CLEAR Cost?

The base membership fee for CLEAR is $179/year. However, no one should pay full price (see next section.) If you compare the two expedited security programs, CLEAR will cost you a total of $895 over five years compared to TSA PreCheck’s $85 (less than 10% of the cost of CLEAR.)

Up to three family members can be added for $50/year each. However, children under 18 years old who are traveling with you do not need a membership.

Is There A CLEAR Promo Code?

Not right now, but if you search Google sometimes CLEAR partners with companies and runs special promo codes. In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to snag a free or discounted CLEAR membership.

7 Things You Should Never Pack in a Carry-On Bag

How Can I Get a Free or Discounted CLEAR Membership?

Through a frequent flyer program.

The most common way to save money on a CLEAR membership is to apply using your Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus frequent flyer number. (Both of these programs are free to join if you’re not already a member.) Base members of these two programs get a discounted rate of $119, saving you $60.

If you have Silver, Gold or Platinum status with either program, the price drops to $109. Top-tier Delta Diamond Medallion and United Premier 1K members get a free CLEAR membership.

Through a Credit Card

Alternatively, you can get discounted membership rates if you hold a specific credit card . If you have a Delta- or United-branded credit card, you get a discounted $109 rate.

American Express Platinum and Business Platinum Card Members get a $179 statement credit each calendar year when using their card to pay for a CLEAR membership. American Express Green Card Members get a $100 statement credit.

Through a Student Discount

Students can get a four-year membership to CLEAR for only $50 per year.

Through a CLEAR Trial Membership

CLEAR offers a free two-month trial . If you do not want to continue to use the service, just make sure you cancel before the trial ends.

How Do I Apply For CLEAR?

  • Click through a cashback portal (up to $6 extra value)
  • Enroll for a free two-month trial ; or click through the Delta , United or student page for discounted membership
  • Take your ID to a CLEAR kiosk next time you fly (no appointment needed)
  • An agent will help you take your biometric information

Note that if your application is denied by CLEAR for any reason, you are entitled to a refund of your membership fee.

Bottom Line

If you are a frequent traveler and value your time, then CLEAR may be worth enrolling in. You can try out the service before you commit by signing up for a free two-month trial. You can also save money on the membership fee by either applying through Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus, or holding a specific credit card. Students get a hefty discount too.

On the other hand, if you are not a frequent traveler, getting TSA PreCheck may instead offer you better value. You’ll still save time compared to the regular line but do be aware that the PreCheck line can still be long, especially during peak travel periods.

Finally, CLEAR also offers expedited security screening at a growing number of sporting and entertainment venues and events, which will become more useful as the world opens back up.

You've probably seen the lines and machines that say "CLEAR" at an airport security checkpoint by now. The CLEAR airport kiosks use a fingerprint and an iris scan to verify your identity, so you can skip the line where the TSA agent manually checks your travel document.

The service is pricey, but CLEAR can save you a considerable amount of time going through security lines — even expediting your TSA PreCheck experience when lines are long. But does CLEAR live up to its price? Thankfully, there are many ways you can enroll in CLEAR at a discount or even free.

How Does CLEAR Work?

CLEAR security at airport

CLEAR is a membership program that allows travelers to get through airport security faster by using biometric information, (fingerprints and/or iris scans) to verify your identity. You still have to go through TSA security but can skip the part where you show your ID—and get your identification verified at a kiosk instead.

Once you’re enrolled in CLEAR and are at the airport ready to travel, here's how to use it:

  • Head to a CLEAR kiosk.
  • Follow the kiosk prompts to have your identification verified (either fingerprints or iris scans).
  • Once verified, you can skip the TSA ID verification line and go straight to the metal detectors.
  • CLEAR members can bring children under 18 with them without a membership.

If you travel a lot and are looking to make the process a little less of a hassle—and are comfortable sharing some private data—CLEAR might be worth it.

How Much Does Clear Cost?

A membership for CLEAR costs $189 per year.

CLEAR offers special pricing for some people, including:

  • Students: $60 per year for four years, if they are new to CLEAR membership
  • Newly enrolled and veteran military members: $99 per year
  • Government personnel: $99 per year
  • Select credit cardholders: Delta SkyMiles members, United MileagePlus members and some American Express cardholders have access to special pricing

  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The American Express® Green Card

Credit Cards With CLEAR Membership Discounts

Some credit cards also offer discounts on CLEAR memberships, including Delta and United co-branded cards.

United co-branded cards also come with a CLEAR membership discount ($149 annual membership):

Delta co-branded cardholders can get a discounted CLEAR membership for $149 a year:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card

Here are some other ways you may be able to save on a CLEAR membership:

  • United MileagePlus ® Premier members: All tiers offer discounted CLEAR membership, and Premier 1k status Includes free CLEAR membership
  • Delta frequent flyers without elite status: Delta offers SkyMiles® Members discounts on CLEAR membership
  • United frequent flyers without elite status: MileagePlus® members get CLEAR membership discounts, too
  • Students: CLEAR offers a deep discount per year for four years for students who are new to CLEAR membership

CLEAR Pros and Cons

  • Can save time at the airport
  • Children can go through the lane with CLEAR members for free
  • Can get faster screenings into some sports stadiums
  • Cost is much higher than TSA PreCheck
  • Some people may be uncomfortable providing biometric information

How to Apply for CLEAR

Here’s how to qualify for and apply for a CLEAR membership:

  • Go to the CLEAR website
  • Fill out your name, email address, zip code and date of birth on CLEAR’s online form
  • Complete your enrollment in person at an airport next time you travel
  • Bring your government-issued ID to complete the enrollment
  • Bring a payment method to pay for your membership

You need at least one of the following forms of identification to enroll in CLEAR:

  • U.S. driver's license
  • U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
  • U.S-issued permanent resident card (green card)
  • U.S. state-issued I.D.
  • Global entry card

Note that you have to be at least 18 to enroll in CLEAR but children are allowed to go through the CLEAR lane with an enrolled member for no additional fee.

CLEAR vs. TSA PreCheck

The best part of having a CLEAR membership is that you can combine it with a TSA PreCheck subscription. Here's how to the two programs compare:

  • With the CLEAR membership: You skip the first security line, where the TSA Agent checks your ID.
  • With TSA Pre-Check: You have shorter lines for ID verification, and you get expedited security screening.

That’s right, by having this killer combo, you will be escorted by a CLEAR representative to the front of the TSA PreCheck security checkpoint—bypassing the TSA PreCheck line without the need to take off your shoes or take out liquids and laptops. Some travel credit cards even come with free TSA PreCheck , so check your credit card benefits guide to see if you have the perk.

Best Credit Cards for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry Reimbursement

Is clear worth it.

CLEAR is worth it for people who travel through airports that have CLEAR lanes and who want to speed up the queue at sports and entertainment events that also have CLEAR. If you already have or are interested in a travel rewards credit card that offers free or discounted CLEAR membership, you might also find the program worthwhile.

If you travel very frequently, especially at a wider variety of airports, or aren’t interested in the program’s other uses, you may not find CLEAR as useful. Instead, you might prefer the cheaper TSA PreCheck membership more useful, though some savvy travelers like to combine the benefits to get the best of both worlds.

What are the eligibility requirements to enroll in CLEAR?

You must be 18 or older to apply for a CLEAR membership and must have one of the following forms of valid photo identification: U.S. driver's license, U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, U.S.-issued permanent resident card, state-issued ID or U.S. military ID.

How long does it take to get approved for CLEAR?

It should only take a few minutes to get approved for CLEAR, but the process has two steps. The first part is to fill out a very brief online form. Then you need to complete the process in person at an airport with your eligible identification. Depending on how long the lines are, that part of the process should also be relatively quick.

What do you get when you join CLEAR?

You can get through the ID portion of airport security faster with CLEAR. The program doesn't use traditional forms of ID like driver's licenses or passports to verify a traveler's identity. Instead, it uses biometric data like fingerprints and eye scans. This lets you skip the TSA PreCheck line, which can sometimes be even longer than the regular security line at the airport.

Is CLEAR faster than TSA PreCheck?

Typically, CLEAR’s biometric method of confirming your identity will get you to the front of the security line faster than TSA PreCheck. After an agent has checked your identity, they will usually escort you to the front of the TSA PreCheck line, which can make the screening process faster and easier.

Can I bring a guest through CLEAR?

You can bring your children through the CLEAR lane for free but extra adults need membership, either their own or through a CLEAR family plan. However, you can bring one guest through a CLEAR lane at stadiums or entertainment venues.

Can my family or friends join me in the CLEAR lane?

Once you join CLEAR, you can log in to your account on the CLEAR website and add up to three family members for an additional fee. CLEAR has a broad definition of what constitutes a family, so loved ones, including friends, can join you as long as you add them as family members on your account. Remember that kids under 18 can use the lane for free if they are with a CLEAR member.

Do the Chase Sapphire cards come with free CLEAR membership?

No, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® do not come with a free CLEAR membership. However, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® does offer a $100 statement credit every four years for a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® or NEXUS application fee reimbursement. Some frequent travelers like to use these programs instead of or along with CLEAR.

Even if you have TSA PreCheck® , now might be the time to add Clear® to your list of ways to get through airport security faster. A Clear® Plus memership works like this: After signing up online and completing a short in-person biometric scan to verify your identity, you’ll be able to walk up to a Clear® kiosk at any airport where there is one and scan your fingerprints or eyes (no need to scan your license or passport). Then a Clear® representative will escort you straight to the security checkpoint, bypassing the regular line where the TSA agents check your ID.

With airport security lines commanding extra-long waits nowadays and even TSA PreCheck lines getting longer, Clear® delivers a faster and more efficient airport experience. And with the right credit card or frequent flier affiliation, you can score a free or heavily discounted annual membership.

How much does Clear® Plus cost?

It typically costs $189 for an annual Clear® Plus membership , but there are several ways to lower this number through frequent flier memberships, promotional codes, or credit card statement credits. You can also add up to three family members and friends to your account for an extra $60 each per year. Those family members and friends don’t need to be traveling with you or together to use their memberships. Relatives under 18 years old can always join in the Clear® lane alongside a member at no cost.

Is Clear® Plus worth it?

Overall, a Clear® Plus membership is worth it if you regularly fly through any of the dozens of U.S. airports it currently serves, including JFK, LAX, and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. If you’re a sports fan, your Clear® membership also allows you to skip the line at many major sports stadiums throughout the country, including Oracle Park in San Francisco and Denver’s Coors Field.

Additionally, Clear® has some tools that may expedite your pandemic-era trip. You can store your digital vaccination card through Clear® as well as sometimes upload documents to create a Health Pass for air or cruise travel (when required).

How to get Clear® Plus for free

In addition to offering statement credits covering Global Entry and TSA PreCheck® fees , the Platinum Card® from American Express (annual fee $695, see rates and fees ) also offers up to $189 in statement credits each year toward an annual Clear® Plus membership fee. Same goes for the Business Platinum Card® from American Express (annual fee $695, see rates and fees ). While the American Express® Green Card provides a statement credit up to $189 annually, there is, interestingly, no Clear® benefit for Gold cardholders.

You first must enroll for this benefit online or by calling the number on the back of your card. After enrolling, simply charge your annual membership to your Platinum or Green card and days or weeks later a statement credit will appear for the amount paid, up to $189. It’s important to note that while Global Entry and TSA PreCheck credits extend to each additional Platinum card holder , the Clear® credit does not.

It’s also possible to get a free membership as a top frequent flier. If you hold Delta’s coveted Diamond Medallion status, you can get a Clear® membership for free. Likewise, those with United Premier 1K status also receive complimentary membership.

Clear® discounts for Delta SkyMiles members

Anyone with a SkyMiles account (which is free to sign up for) can pay $179 for an annual Clear® membership—a savings of $10 off the full price. If you’re a Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion member on Delta, or have a Delta SkyMiles credit card, you’ll only pay $149. To enroll, simply sign up at clearme.com/partner/delta using your SkyMiles account number.

Clear® discounts for United MileagePlus members

Anyone with a Mileage Plus account (which is also free to sign up for) qualifies for a discounted $179 annual Clear® membership. Those with United Premier Platinum, Gold, or Silver status and United U.S. credit card members can obtain membership for $149 annually. To link your frequent flier account with a membership, add your MileagePlus number when signing up at clearme.com/partner/united .

Combining Amex and airline benefits

It’s possible to combine airline discounts with Amex statement credits to maximize a Clear® membership for yourself, family, and friends. Here’s how. First, enroll for your Clear® credit as a Platinum or Green card holder. Then, sign up for a membership through either Delta’s or United’s partner links for discounted pricing. This way, your membership costs $179 at most. Platinum and Green cardholders will get the full $179 credit.

Is Clear® better than TSA PreCheck?

Although people see Clear® and TSA PreCheck as competitors, they are meant to complement one another. TSA PreCheck is free with over a dozen credit cards and is an essential for travel through U.S. airports. Clear® is an added time-saving service on top of TSA PreCheck at select airports.

If you still feel the need to choose one, TSA PreCheck always wins. PreCheck lines are far shorter and faster than regular airport security lines. The annual fee is $85 for five years (and reimbursed by many credit cards ). Not having to remove shoes, electronics, or 3-1-1 liquids makes airport security a breeze.

We don’t recommend getting a Clear® membership without a TSA PreCheck membership. You’ll still fast track to the front of the regular airport security line but will need to take off your shoes and remove your electronics from your bag while going through the checkpoint. This means your time savings are kind of out the window.

In total, the optimal situation is to have both TSA PreCheck and Clear®. It’s the most you can do to make today’s airport experience as fast and efficient as possible. Those who carry the Platinum Card® from American Express can score both for free, while frequent flier members of both Delta and United can land deep discounts on a Clear® membership.

While the offers mentioned above are accurate at the time of publication, they are subject to change at any time, and may have changed or may no longer be available. All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by AFAR.

How to Get a Discount on Clear Membership

Clear ClearMe

Clear, the expedited security program , is a big time saver. After a rebranding in 2010, the program has helped countless American fliers speed through the security line at more than 60 U.S. airports, helping to cut down wait time at the airport. While TSA PreCheck allows pre-screened travelers to join a separate, shorter security line, Clear lets members bypass the line altogether. Just find one of their kiosks after you enter your terminal, tap their biometric security screen, scan your eye or finger, and a Clear member will escort you to the front of security (along with your children, provided they're under 18.)

If you're ready to sign up, there are a few options for a free or discounted membership. Currently, Clear has partnerships with two airlines (Delta and United) that grant frequent fliers discounts from their standard price of $179 per year. Even new members can get a discount, so simply creating an account with one of these programs is an easy way to save money on Clear. If you don't wish to sign up with an airline, Clear also offers a free trial to anyone wishing to test out the service and a hefty student discount. Read on for a description of each option, and how to take advantage of them.

Getting Clear with Delta Airlines

Members of Delta's Skymiles program can get Clear for $119. That number goes down to $109 for Delta credit card holders, or fliers with Delta's Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion status. Members of Delta's top-tier Diamond Medallion status get a Clear membership free of charge.

Sign up for Delta Skymiles here. Once you're a member, it's easy to link your membership to a new Clear account.

Getting Clear with United Airlines

As of this week, members of United's MileagePlus program can also get Clear for $119. Similar to Delta, the fee drops to $109 for members of United's Premier Platinum, Gold, and Silver status holders, and anyone with a United credit card . Clear is free for members of United's top-tier Global Services and Premier 1K program. As an additional bonus, Clear's partnership with United means the service is coming to a few new airports, including Newark Liberty International and Houston George Bush Intercontinental, by the end of the summer.

Trying Clear with a free trial

Clear currently offers a two-month free trial, including for families. This is great for those who are doing a lot of summer travel, or simply want to try out the service for a limited amount of time without paying the annual membership fee.

How to get a student discount

Clear currently offers students a discount of $50 per year for four years from the time of enrollment. Anyone studying at a four-year or two-year college or graduate school is eligible for the four-year student discount , no matter if they're in their first year of college or on their last semester.

For frequent travelers, CLEAR Plus can be a great way to save time when going through airport security. If you aren't already a member, CLEAR is sweetening the pot with promotions for signing up for a new membership. Current promotions are slim, including 1,500 bonus Alaska miles. Furthermore, several airline elite status members, plus various credit cardholders, can score a discounted or free membership.

Here are all the current ways to get CLEAR for free — plus a look at the bonuses you can get for enrolling — and some methods to get a discount if you don't qualify for a free membership.

Page Contents

What Is CLEAR?

1,500 bonus alaska airlines mileage plan miles, expired clear plus new membership promotions, get a complimentary clear membership via airline elite status, get a complimentary clear membership via credit card benefit, discounted clear membership with credit cards and elite status.

CLEAR, and its CLEAR Plus membership, is a paid service that uses biometric data to verify your identity at airport security. Once verified — which takes as little as a few seconds — you're escorted to the front of the TSA security line. That means potentially speeding through security without having to wait in the standard lines.

In rare cases, CLEAR lines are longer than the regular security line or TSA PreCheck . But, my own experiences with CLEAR at the Denver and Seattle airports were fantastic, as I was (somehow) the only person in the line both times. Like all things in travel, your mileage may vary.

You can find a CLEAR kiosk at more than 50 airports across the United States. The complete list is below:

Dozens of stadiums and event centers have CLEAR capabilities, too. And CLEAR adds locations often. Click here to see CLEAR's entire list of domestic and international locations.

Current CLEAR Plus Enrollment Promotions

CLEAR regularly offers free months or discounted memberships to entice more members to join — or introduces a promotion offering bonus goodies. Some of the promotions we've periodically seen include a sum of airline miles, Uber gift cards, and United TravelBank credits.

Here's a look at the promotions that are currently active.

Alaska Mileage Plan elite members will get 1,500 Alaska miles for linking their accounts and enrolling or renewing at a slightly discounted $179 rate.

If you already have a CLEAR Plus membership, you can re-enroll for another year and get 1,250 Alaska miles. This offer is available to Mileage Plan MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K, or MVP Gold 100K members.

The bonus Mileage Plan miles will be posted to your account 60 days after completed enrollment or renewal, provided your CLEAR account is still active.

Over the past few years, CLEAR has offered several membership promotions. For reference, here are some that we've seen in case you want to wait around for another offer to surface:

  • $100 CHOICE rebate voucher for new CLEAR Plus members — June 2024
  • $75 Uber gift card promotion for new CLEAR Plus members — December 2023
  • Three months of a free CLEAR membership after enrolling through Kayak — December 2022
  • Up to 50% off CLEAR enrollment using a targeted Amex card — August 2022
  • United MileagePlus embers get up to 15,000 bonus miles with CLEAR membership — July 2022

How To Get a CLEAR Membership for Free

A standard CLEAR Plus membership costs $189 annually. However, there are various ways to get your membership for free.

If you have one of the following levels of elite status, you can sign up for CLEAR Plus for free:

  • United MileagePlus: Global Services, Premier 1K
  • Delta SkyMiles: Diamond Medallion
  • Hawaiian Airlines Pualani: Pualini Platinum (Members must have flown at least 75,000 miles in the previous or current calendar year to qualify)

The following credit cards offer a complimentary CLEAR Plus membership, or a statement credit to help you recoup the enrollment cost. Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

  • The Platinum Card ® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express
  • American Express ® Green Card
  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

If you can't take advantage of one of the methods for a free CLEAR Plus membership, there are a few options to enroll at a reduced rate.

  • Alaska Mileage Plan : All members — regardless of elite tier — can enroll at the same discounted price of $179.
  • Delta SkyMiles : General members can get an annual membership for $179. If you have a Delta credit card , Delta Silver, Gold, or Platinum Medallion status, you can get a membership for $149.
  • Hawaiian Airlines Pualani : General HawaiianMiles members can get an annual membership for $179. You can drop the price to $149 if you have Pualani Gold or Platinum Elite — or have a Premier Club membership.
  • United MileagePlus : General members can get an annual membership for $179. You can drop the price to $149 if you have a United credit card , United Premier Silver, Gold, or Platinum elite status.

An employee at a CLEAR Plus enrollment kiosk

The CLEAR partnerships with Alaska Airlines isn't that exciting. Travelers already could enroll in CLEAR Plus for $179 just by being a general Delta SkyMiles member or United MileagePlus member. After all, you can always status match between airlines and get a discounted CLEAR membership with Delta or United. At least Alaska's promotion allows you to earn 1,500 bonus miles if you have Mileage Plan elite status.

Regardless of the mileage program you link to CLEAR, it's worth remembering to enroll and pay with an eligible American Express card to get statement credits to offset your membership fee. This is the cheapest way to get a complimentary CLEAR Plus membership if you don't have an eligible tier of airline elite status.

Guide to using the American Express Clear Plus benefit

Nick Ewen

Editor's Note

Whether you're at the airport, a sporting event or a concert, going through security can be a pain. And if you've ever stood in a barely-moving line and longed to be one of the people zipping along beside you in the Clear Plus lane, you're in luck. checking

If you have The Platinum Card® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card® from American Express , the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire , or the American Express® Green Card in your wallet, you can get the entire cost of your Clear Plus membership covered — and possibly part of a family member's as well. Enrollment required. Terms apply.

Here's everything you need to know about this valuable benefit.

What is the Amex Clear Plus credit?

Clear Plus is a third-party, expedited security program that uses iris and fingerprint scanners rather than a photo ID to identify you. If you have a Clear Plus membership, you can effectively skip to the front of the security line at certain airports and entertainment venues nationwide.

clear travel discount code

In practice, you enter a dedicated security checkpoint lane and input your biometric data into a kiosk. You'll then move to the gray carry-on bins at the airport. Even better: if you have TSA PreCheck, you can still utilize that option .

A one-year Clear Plus membership typically costs $189. Conveniently, the Amex Platinum , Amex Business Platinum , Hilton Honors Aspire and Amex Green each come with up to $189 in Clear Plus statement credits each calendar year. Enrollment is required. Terms apply.

You can use the Clear Plus credit for yourself, or, if you already have a membership, you can extend this benefit to a friend or family member.

How to use the Amex Clear Plus credit

You must enroll your card for this statement credit to activate, but the process is simple.

First, log in to your American Express account, and then select your Amex with the Clear Plus benefit (if it's not the default card). At the top, click on the "Rewards and Benefits" icon.

clear travel discount code

AMERICANEXPRESS.COM

On the next screen, click on "Benefits" at the top right. This will bring you to a page of tiles, each explaining a different perk of your card. Find the one labeled "$189 Clear credit" and note your status. If you're enrolled, you're ready to use the perk. Otherwise, click on the icon to activate the benefit.

Once your Amex card is enrolled, you can apply for a Clear Plus membership online. Consider enrolling through the Delta , United or Alaska Airlines link . This is a critical step if you're a member of one (or more) of these airlines' loyalty programs and want to save on your membership.

That's because Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members can enroll for a discounted Clear Plus membership — from $10 off to a fully complimentary membership, depending on your status level and which credit cards you have:

  • General members of these programs: $179 per year ($10 discount)
  • Delta Air Lines and United Airlines credit card holders: $149 per year ($40 discount)
  • Delta Silver, Gold and Platinum Medallion® members: $149 per year ($40 discount)
  • United Premier Silver, Gold and Platinum members: $149 per year ($40 discount)
  • Delta Diamond Medallion and 360º members: Complimentary membership
  • United Premier 1K and Global Services members: Complimentary membership

Even though Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members only receive a $10 discount, they can earn additional miles when they sign up for Clear Plus. MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K receive 1,500 miles when they sign up and an additional 1,250 miles each year they renew.

Children under 18 can accompany registered adults for free, meaning your family could use the program for free or close to it when combining Amex perks and Clear Plus discounts. Adding family members who are 18 and older will cost $99 per person.

Regardless of how you apply for Clear Plus, you must use your enrolled Amex card to pay for your membership (and that of your family members, if applicable). Amex states that the statement credit should appear within two to four weeks, but TPG staff members have found that it typically triggers within one or two days . Your results may vary, of course.

FAQs on the Amex Clear Plus credit

Where does clear plus operate.

Clear Plus is far from ubiquitous, but it continues to expand to new spots. Currently, you can find dedicated lanes at around 55 U.S. airports and nearly 20 entertainment venues — including Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden in New York City ( see all locations ).

clear travel discount code

Still, if you don't think you'll travel through these airports or visit these venues regularly, this benefit may not be super valuable for you.

Can I have both TSA PreCheck/Global Entry and Clear Plus?

You can — and you should. These trusted traveler programs fulfill entirely different needs:

  • Clear Plus allows you to effectively cut the line at the airport security checkpoint.
  • TSA PreCheck allows you to keep your shoes, belt and jacket on when going through the TSA metal detector. You also can keep your laptop and TSA-compliant toiletries in your carry-on bag.
  • Global Entry expedites your immigration process when entering the U.S.

Read our post on the best credit cards for Global Entry to learn how to get TSA PreCheck and Global Entry for free. If you choose to sign up for a Clear Plus membership, you can elect to sign up for TSA PreCheck at the same time . Normally, signing up for these two programs would cost $267. That's $189 for Clear Plus and $78 for TSA PreCheck. If you sign up for both programs simultaneously, however, you'll enjoy a discounted price of $200.

Related: Why you should get TSA PreCheck and Clear Plus — and how you can save on both

Can I use the Clear Plus credit for friends and family?

Yes. You don't have to use it for your own membership; it can be for anyone. As long as you enroll your eligible Amex card and then use it to pay for Clear Plus, you'll receive up to $189 in rebates each calendar year.

Here's a screenshot from a TPG staff member who added three family members to their account. (If you add someone to your account, Clear Plus will prorate the year to match your current membership — hence the odd dollar amounts.)

clear travel discount code

In addition, when you add family members to your account, they will get a full Clear Plus membership in their own right. They don't need to be traveling with you to use its benefits.

Can I use the credit to purchase Clear Plus gift cards?

Unfortunately, no. Clear Plus gift cards are processed by a third party called eGifter. In other words, your Amex won't see this as a Clear Plus purchase, so the credit will not trigger.

clear travel discount code

However, this is a great way to gift a Clear Plus membership to someone while saving the Clear Plus credit from a card for yourself.

Is this the only way to get a discounted Clear Plus membership?

As mentioned previously, saving on Clear Plus through two major airline loyalty programs is possible.

One important clarification: If you have an Amex with the Clear Plus benefit, do not charge the Clear Plus membership fee to your Delta or United card. While being a cardholder will unlock the discounted pricing, you must use your eligible Amex to trigger the Clear Plus credit.

Do I have to use the Clear Plus credit all at once?

You don't have to redeem this up to $189 credit in one lump sum. It will activate any time you pay Clear Plus — up to $189 each calendar year. This is handy if you're eligible for discounts from any of the above methods. That way, you can pay for your membership and then add a family member (or multiple, if you have top-tier status with Delta or United).

clear travel discount code

How do I complete my enrollment?

Unfortunately, paying your Clear Plus membership fee with your Amex to trigger the statement credits is only the first step in enrollment. Once you submit your information online, you must finish the process at any airport Clear Plus location. Bring your government-issued identification, such as a driver's license or passport.

The representative will scan your eyes and fingerprints. Then, you'll be all set to use enhanced security on your flights.

Related: How to get and use Clear Plus to avoid lines

Bottom line

Clear Plus doesn't get as much attention as other traveler programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry , but it can be a lifesaver for reducing wait times at airport security. It's easy to unlock a free membership with a popular travel credit card.

The Amex Platinum , Amex Business Platinum , Hilton Honors Aspire and Amex Green each offer up to $189 per calendar year in statement credits that can be used for a Clear Plus membership. By stacking this benefit with other discount options, you could access these biometric security lanes on your next trip and might be able to add family members at no out-of-pocket cost.

The short version: Is Clear worth the cost?

How much does clear cost, what are the benefits of clear membership, how to get a discounted or free clear membership, what is clear sports and how does it work, how does clear enrollment work, where is clear available, is clear worth it.

Are you thinking about getting a Clear membership? The private biometric screen company lets paying members bypass part of the security line at some stadiums and the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint for identification at airports, which can often be the longest part of the line. If you’re a frequent traveler, using Clear can save a lot of time at the airport.

But is Clear worth the price? Or better yet, is it worth enrolling if you can get it for free? We break it down so you can decide for yourself.

If you travel a lot and want the convenience of skipping the line to reach the suitcase and body scanner, then Clear could be worth it. Although standard membership costs $189 per year, you can reduce the price or even get it for free if you have certain credit cards.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards

The standard price for an annual Clear membership is $189. Unlike government programs such as TSA PreCheck and Global Entry that offer several years of membership with a single fee, Clear’s fee is annual.

On the surface, $189 is a huge price to pay for a little convenience. Thankfully, there are several ways to knock that price down to more reasonable territory (see below).

Note: Clear is available only to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents age 18 and older with valid government ID.

Clear uses biometric data (fingerprints and eye scans) instead of traditional ID documents, like driver’s licenses or passports, to verify traveler identification. This lets you skip the TSA PreCheck line, which can sometimes be even longer than the regular line at the airport.

There are two parts of an airport security line:

Getting your ID and boarding pass verified.

Passing through the scanners.

Clear lets you bypass this first part, which is often the longest. Since Clear is completely separate from TSA PreCheck, it doesn't provide access to the PreCheck line. Once you’ve gone through the Clear line, a Clear employee will escort you straight to the scanner portion of security.

You can however, stack your Clear membership with a TSA PreCheck membership if you have both. The Clear employee will escort you to the TSA PreCheck security screening where you can proceed without removing your shoes, liquids, laptops, etc.

If you regularly fly out of a busy airport or one that has been known to have long TSA PreCheck lines, Clear may be a compelling option.

And keep in mind that Clear is available at over 67 locations, including airports and stadiums. So the service will provide far less benefit for those who live near smaller airports that lack Clear kiosks.

Avis Preferred Plus membership

In addition to breezing through lines at airports and stadiums, Clear members get complimentary Avis Preferred Plus status with the rental car company Avis. Avis Preferred Plus is the middle tier of Avis’ rental car loyalty program . Its perks include:

A free, single-car class upgrade upon availability.

The ability to earn additional bonus points on each rental.

Access to exclusive offers and promotional discounts.

You would typically need to spend $4,000 on qualifying Avis purchases or complete 10 rentals in a calendar year to qualify for Avis Preferred Plus.

» Learn more: TSA PreCheck vs. Clear: — which Is better?

Holding elite status in certain airline loyalty programs or specific credit cards can get you a free or discounted Clear membership, which normally costs $189 a year.

Save $67 on your first year of membership: Bundle with TSA PreCheck

You can now get Clear for a discounted rate of $122 for your first year of membership, but you'll have to bundle it with TSA PreCheck to do so for a total cost of $199.95.

If you're looking to get both TSA PreCheck and Clear anyway, this is a great deal, with the PreCheck portion of the bundle costing $77.95 (a few cents less than the next cheapest option) and saving you $67 on your first year of Clear membership.

In order to take advantage of this deal, you'll need to begin your application online and complete it at an airport that currently offers TSA PreCheck enrollment through Clear .

Save $10-$40: Become a United or Delta frequent flyer member

Look for a promotion

Clear often runs sales and other discount codes, some of which can be stacked with the options described above. Look on the Clear site itself and search for “Clear promotions” to see if anything pops up.

Unlike the regular Clear membership, Clear Sports is free and offered at some sports stadiums. Clear Sports allows you to enter stadiums faster by leveraging Clear’s biometric technology.

Current Clear members automatically receive access to Clear Sports, and non-Clear members aren’t charged to enroll in the program.

You can enroll in Clear Sports by downloading the app, tapping “Sports and Events” on the main screen and logging in or creating a free account. You’ll then need to take a selfie to confirm your identity and select the stadium where you’ll use Clear.

When you arrive, visit the Clear lane, take your photo at the Clear pod and you’ll be granted entry.

Unlike TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, which can be a slog to sign up for, getting started with Clear is a relative snap. Just sign up and pay online, then complete registration at a Clear location the next time you travel.

Also, no appointment is necessary to complete this sign-up in person, which is a huge plus. That said, give yourself some extra time at the airport before your flight to make sure everything goes smoothly with registration.

At first glance, $189 per year is a big price tag for cut-in-line privileges at some airports. You can knock a bit off the price if you’re a Delta or United member, and even more so if you have elite status with either airline

If you hold The Platinum Card® from American Express , American Express® Green Card or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express , the cost of Clear will be covered for you. Terms apply.

In the end, whether Clear is worth it to you depends on a number of factors:

Do you fly a lot? Even someone who takes 10 round-trip flights per year is still spending just a little over $7 per use at the lower $149/year price.

Does Clear support your home airport (and preferred terminal)? If not, it’s almost certainly not worth it.

Do you have The Platinum Card® from American Express , American Express® Green Card or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express ? Enrolling in Clear is a smart move since you’ll get an annual statement credit for the full cost of membership. Terms apply.

Are you planning to apply for TSA PreCheck anyway? Bundling the two by applying for PreCheck through Clear can save you money on both.

$189 CLEAR Plus Credit for Platinum and Business Platinum

Basic Card Members can earn up to $189 in statement credits per calendar year when the Platinum or Business Platinum Card or Additional Cards on the Account are used to pay for an annual CLEAR® Plus membership. Enrollment in CLEAR Plus is required and is subject to CLEAR’s terms and conditions. You may not receive this benefit if your purchase is made within 24 hours of account opening. CLEAR Plus Memberships automatically renew each year unless canceled and CLEAR will charge the applicable Membership fee to the Card CLEAR has on file. American Express has no control over the application and/or approval process for CLEAR, and does not have access to any information provided to CLEAR by the Card Member or by CLEAR to the Card Member. American Express has no liability regarding the CLEAR program. If a Card Member's application is not approved by CLEAR, CLEAR will refund the charges. If the statement credit benefit has been applied before CLEAR refunds the charges, that statement credit will be reversed. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $189 across all Cards on the Account per calendar year. For additional information on the CLEAR program, including information regarding Membership, eligibility, and for a list of participating locations, as well as the full terms and conditions of the program, please go to www.clearme.com. The CLEAR program is subject to change, and American Express has no control over those changes. Please allow up to 6-8 weeks after a qualifying CLEAR transaction is charged to the Card Account for the statement credit to be posted to the Account. American Express relies on accurate transaction data to identify eligible CLEAR Plus purchases. If you do not see a credit for a qualifying purchase on your eligible Card after 8 weeks, please call the number on the back of your Card. Card Members remain responsible for timely payment of all CLEAR charges. American Express relies on the merchant's processing of transactions to determine the transaction date. The transaction date may differ from the date you made the purchase if, for example, there is a delay in the merchant submitting the transaction to us or if the merchant uses another date as the transaction date. This means that in some cases your purchase may not earn the statement credit benefit for the benefit period in which you made the purchase. For example, if an eligible purchase is made on December 31st but the merchant processes the transaction such that it is identified to American Express as occuring on January 1st, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied. If you are assigned a new Card number or have a Card number on file with CLEAR that is outdated (for example, if you replace your Card or if your Card has expired), you must update your Card information on file with CLEAR to help ensure that statement credits are received for eligible CLEAR Plus Membership fees. If the Card Account is canceled or past due, it may not qualify to receive a statement credit. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time feature balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time feature balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card.

$189 CLEAR Plus Credit for Corporate Platinum

The benefit is available to Corporate Platinum Card Members. Card Members are eligible to receive up to $189 in statement credits per calendar year for CLEAR® Plus Membership when charged to an eligible Card. Card Members who established a CLEAR Plus Membership using another payment method and who would like to take advantage of the $189 Fee Credit for CLEAR must contact CLEAR customer service to change the payment method on their CLEAR Plus Membership to an eligible Card.

American Express has no liability regarding the CLEAR Plus program. Membership for CLEAR is per person, and a separate application must be completed for each individual. If a Card Member's application is not approved by CLEAR, CLEAR will refund the charges. If the statement credit benefit has been applied before CLEAR refunds the charges, that statement credit will be reversed. For additional information on the CLEAR Plus program, including information regarding the application and/or approval process and for a list of participating airports and stadiums, as well as the full terms and conditions of the programs, please go to www.clearme.com. The CLEAR Plus program is subject to change, and American Express has no control over those changes.

The CLEAR statement credit benefit applies to this program only. Other program applications including, but not limited to, Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® NEXUS, SENTRI, and Privium are not eligible for this statement credit benefit.

Please allow up to 6-8 weeks after a qualifying transaction is charged to the eligible Card account for the statement credit to be posted to the Card account. If you do not see a credit for a qualifying purchase on your eligible Card after 8 weeks, please call the number on the back of your Card. Card Members remain responsible for timely payment of all charges. To be eligible for this benefit, Card account(s) must be active through the time of statement credit fulfilment. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.

$189 CLEAR Plus Credit for Green

Basic Card Members can earn up to $189 in statement credits per calendar year when the American Express Green Card® or Additional Cards on the Account are used to pay for an annual CLEAR® Plus Membership. This benefit is only available for the American Express Green Card. Traditional Green Cards and Senior Green Cards are not eligible. Enrollment in CLEAR Plus is required and is subject to CLEAR's terms and conditions. You may not receive this benefit if your purchase is made within 24 hours of account opening. CLEAR Plus Memberships automatically renew each year unless canceled and CLEAR will charge the applicable membership fee to the Card CLEAR has on file. American Express has no control over the application and/or approval process for CLEAR and does not have access to any information provided to CLEAR by the Card Member or by CLEAR to the Card Member. American Express has no liability regarding the CLEAR program. If a Card Member's application is not approved by CLEAR, CLEAR will refund the charges.
