Brian Ellison stable tour

Brian Ellison Tour

Tour Summary

Located near the historic racing town of Malton we have put together a special package for anyone interested in horse racing – a fun and entertaining morning including breakfast, a trip to the gallops and an informative stable tour with leading trainer Brian Ellison .

Tour History

Brian has been training horses for 25 years and this is his 14th year at Spring Cottage Stables. There are 120 horses currently in training at Spring Cottage, in this very friendly, but professional yard.

Just a mile from the yard, are the superb Langton Wold Gallops, generally regarded as some of the finest in the country. The horses walk to the gallops, which itself is an ideal warm up.

Last year the yard produced over 100 winners and current stables stars include Top Notch Nonto, Montefltro, Bishops Castle and Saptapadi.

The horses under Brian's care are regularly turned in one of Spring Cottages' four paddocks.

Brian believes that keeping a horse 'sweet' is the hardest part of training and seeing how much the horses enjoy their freedom and each others company as they amble about the paddocks would warm any horse lovers heart!

Tour Itinerary

Tuesdays, Wednesday and Saturdays (available October to March inclusive)

Start time: 8am (three-hour tour)

The fun starts the moment you arrive at Spring Cottage Stables , Langton Road, Norton, Malton, YO17 9PY where the day commences in the best way possible over a winning breakfast (guaranteed to set you up for the day) with Brian.

Afterwards Brian will take you on foot or drive you to the gallops to watch the string being put through their paces at first hand.

Next it is back to the stables and enjoy an informative tour of the yard to gain an insiders' view to some of the equine stars 'looking over the doors'.

Then over a mug of coffee you'll get the chance to ask Brian about the workings of a racing yard and hear tales 'from the horse's mouth' from his colourful careers in the Sport of Kings.

Take a look inside a 214-year-old racing yard

Fancy taking a peek inside one of the country’s most historic racing stables ?

Visitors to Sledmere House in Yorkshire can now tour the stables where the Sykes family bred some of the world’s most famous racehorses — including Spearmint , Straitlace , Scottish Union , Grey Momus and and Polly Agnes .

Sledmere Stables 5

The stud was founded in 1801 by the first Sir Tatton Sykes (1772-1863) who tasted classic success with his homebred 1838 2000 Guineas winner Grey Momus.

But it was the next baronet, Sir Tatton (1826-1913) who has been credited with establishing the stud’s reputation as a top class equine nursery, breeding four classic winners — Doncaster (1873 Derby ), Spearmint (1906 Derby), Mimi (1891 1000 Guineas and Oaks ) and Disraeli (1898 2000 Guineas ).

During its tenure as a successful commercial stud,  buyers of Sledmere horses included the Queen and the Aga Khan, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth both visited the stud after the war.

Sledmere Stables 1

It is now a long time since Sledmere’s heyday, but for the first time visitors can see the stables where these equestrian stars lived, the tack rooms and foaling box.

Historic objects relating to the stables are on display, such as the racing plates from some of Sledmere’s most famous horses, racing silks in the Sledmere colours of orange and purple, stud yearbooks and foaling tags.

There is also a horse-themed activity room for children and the stables contain displays about the building’s history, including a film of the 1913 Derby, during which suffragette Emily Davidson was fatally injured. Sledmere horse Craganour was first past the post in that race, but was later disqualified.

The stables’ new inhabitants – a thoroughbred racehorse, a small riding pony and a driving cob — will be on hand to meet, and visitors can watch them doing some of the traditional work they would have performed in a great country house.

The stables and the walled garden at Sledmere House are open from 10am-4pm every day except Monday. Admission is £6.50.

Johnston Racing is one of the top racehorse training yards in Britain. It was set up by Mark Johnston in 1987 and led by him until his son Charlie took over the training licence at the start of 2023, having been Assistant Trainer for several years as well as sharing the licence with Mark in 2022. In 2009 the stable became the first in the country to send out more than 200 winners on the Flat in a year and has gone on to repeat that feat a further nine times to date. Uniquely, the Johnstons have had more than 100 winners in 30 consecutive seasons, achieving success in British and Irish Classics, and numerous Group One races. In August 2018 Mark became the winningmost trainer in British racing history when he saddled his 4,194th winner, and four years later, with Mark and Charlie holding a joint licence, Johnston Racing had its 5,000th winner.

The Best Horse Racing Courses In Yorkshire

Best Horse Racing Courses In Yorkshire main

If you lose interest in horse racing TV programming, why don’t you attend a real-life race track? There you can enjoy the hectic and lively atmosphere of the race and witness the true beauty as well as the fighting spirits of the racehorses.

With that in mind, we hereby rounded up the top Yorkshire racecourses for your reference. Let’s start to find out now.

Beverley Racecourse

For more than 300 years, Beverley Racecourse has been an integral part of the historic Yorkshire market town. With many first class horses racing at any time, this destination is the top choice fixture in the summer for any horse racing lovers in Yorkshire.

To catch the Yorkshire races at a perfect viewpoint, you can try The Premier enclosure, where they deliver outstanding service with leather sofas, a private bathroom, and a bar with real ale.

The summer last race is a festive occasion with funfair rides and face painting, and is perfect for bringing your families and making it into a memorable day out.

Catterick Racecourse

Beginning racing in Yorkshire during the 17th century, Catterick Racecourse wasn’t a full time horse racing venue until 1813.

Started on a modest scale, this course is now the biggest one in North Yorkshire, with its major race number reaching 27 each year. This place offers many venue options whether you watch the races in pairs or with your family.

The ‘Paddock Enclosure’ option is a perfect choice if you want to visit the Yorkshire races with your partner. Here you can sit back and enjoy a beer during the meet. Interestingly, Catterick also has kids playing areas if your children need a break from watching the racing.

Best Horse Racing Courses In Yorkshire race

Pontefract Racecourse

As the most popular independent racecourse in Yorkshire, Pontefract runs many major races all year round.

In the special ‘Day at the Races’ events, who wins or who loses is not important as the course incorporates the local heritage and history to make a special occasion.

The kids can join in with the entertainment, with face paints, rides and tours for them.

Pontefract is always a celebrateion of Yorkshire at its events – and lately the course offers a ‘Marvellous Tea Dance’ fwhich promises cake and fun alongside the afternoon racing. You’re right to expect more than just a day of horse racing at Pontefract Racecourse.

That is a quick overview of the top horse racing courses you can find in Yorkshire. We hope now you’re less interested in TV programmes and feel more excited and curious about your first horse racing course. Let’s check https://www.twinspires.com/results out for more information. Hopefully, a great time is waiting for you and your partner or your whole family.

How long have you held a license: 3 years

Training Facilities:    Paddocks, Lunge Area, 1.5 furlong canter ring

Number of horses in training/capacity: 20

What is your background/introduction to racing: I was a successful jockey when my dad Dandy was a leading trainer. Which jockeys do you regularly use: Barry McHugh, Connor Beasley and Andrew Mullen

Three horses to follow this season and why: Strawman (0-90) will like any Yorkshire course, over 7f – 1.1m Abate (0-80) will be suited by Ripon over 5-6f Inclement Weather will like Thirsk’s five furlongs

Anything else of note: When I was in my first year training I took a two year old to the Malton gallops and when I opened the back door two chickens jumped out! Kevin Ryan thought it was so funny and Tom Eaves had to catch them!

18 and over

Jack Channon has made a bright start to his training career after taking over the licence from his father Mick at the start of the year.

He has trained with four winners from a small team of runners on the all-weather, but the campaign begins in earnest for him with the start of the turf season at Doncaster on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Racing.

Nothing would give the rookie trainer great pleasure than emulating his father who landed the Lincoln Handicap with Johan 12 months ago and he has a live contender in Majestic who helped sign off Channon senior’s illustrious career in great style when triumphant in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket last September.

“I think I’ve got a lovely bunch of horses and fingers crossed all goes well,” Jack said. “It wouldn’t be a bad start if Majestic could win the Lincoln, he is ready to go and we will give it our best shot.”

Jack kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his main hopes in his maiden season.

Form profile

Winner of seven of his 30 starts and currently rated 108. Finished third, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Anmaat in the Group 3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock (1m 2 1/2f) last August when last seen out.

Trainer says

Certain Lad is a good old horse for Dad and now me and he has had a few issues over the last couple of years, but he has had a real clean preparation this year. He is working really well, and his aim will be the Huxley Stakes at Chester in May. He finished second when making his reappearance in that race last year and this time we should be going in there a little less leg tired, and I am hoping he can run well there again. He’s a good horse and he will be running in some good races and is good horse to have around.

Chairmanoftheboard (IRE)

  • Next Race: Newmarket, 04 May 2024 13:45

Winner of four of his 31 starts and currently rated 89. Finished sixth, beaten nine and a half lengths, to Tanmaawwy in a handicap at Ffos Las (6f) last August off a mark of 91 when last seen in action.

He is another stable stalwart, and he has had a few issues but is another who has had a great preparation and we aim to run him, if the ground is on the soft side of good, at the Lincoln meeting on Sunday. Hopefully, he will be competing in those Saturday handicaps all summer. He has finished fourth in a Stewards’ Cup and, hopefully, he can get back to that sort of level.

Easter Icon (GB)

  • 5-y-o; chestnut gelding

horse racing stable tours yorkshire

No wins from 7 starts and currently rated 52. Finished fourth, beaten five and a quarter lengths, to Bird For Life in a handicap at Wolverhampton (2m 1/2f) in October off a mark of 53.

He is a nice Sixties Icon gelding. He was a weak two-year-old and three-year-old and has just started to strengthen up. I am hoping he can start to move through the rating band. I am very happy with the way he is training, and he will probably start his campaign this week over two miles on the all-weather, but I think he could be a better horse on the turf.

Hiromichi (FR)

  • 6-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Dabirsim (FR) - Pachelbelle (FR) (Anabaa (USA))
  • Last Race: Kempton, 10 Apr 2024 18:30
  • Result: 4/10, tracked leaders on inside, ridden over 1f out, weakened inside final furlong

horse racing stable tours yorkshire

Winner of three of his 12 starts and currently rated 69. Finished seventh, beaten three and three quarter lengths, to Plumette in a handicap at Wolverhampton (7f) in February off his current mark.

He is a lovely horse, and he had his first run back at Wolverhampton in February. It didn’t go to plan as he missed the break and was a little bit ring rusty, but he is due to run on Monday and I think he will put up a good showing. He will be a better horse when he gets back on the turf, and he can go through the handicaps grade this year and is a good horse to have about.

Indian Creak (IRE)

  • 7-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Camacho (UK) - Ushindi (IRE) (Montjeu (IRE))
  • Last Race: Newbury, 19 Apr 2024 14:12
  • Result: 16/16, led centre group, led when groups merged over 1f out, ridden and headed inside final furlong, soon weakened

horse racing stable tours yorkshire

Winner of five of his 41 starts and currently rated 81. Gained his last success at Windsor (6f) last June when beating Danzeno two and a half lengths off a mark of 85.

He is a grand old horse, and he always wins his races at the likes of Windsor and Goodwood. He is a cracking little sprinter when he gets some cut in the ground and I am hoping he can win some nice races for us. He seems in great form.

Ingra Tor (IRE)

  • 5-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Churchill (IRE) - Kassia (IRE) (Acclamation (UK))
  • Trained by: Jack Channon
  • Last Race: Thirsk, 01 Sep 2023 15:20
  • Result: 10/12, raced wide, in touch, pushed along halfway, weakened over 1f out

horse racing stable tours yorkshire

Winner of two of his 10 starts and currently rated 88. Finished fourth, beaten a length and three quarters, to Dubai Station on his reappearance in a handicap at Wolverhampton (6f) in March off his current mark.

He has been a bit of enigma as we know he is very good, but he hasn’t quite reached the heights we wanted him too after his fantastic performance at the Craven meeting last year. I thought he made a very encouraging return at Wolverhampton the other day where he missed the break and raced on the wrong part of the track. He needs good to firm ground and if all falls right there is a really big handicap in him this year. Six furlongs is his trip.

Winner of seven of his 20 starts and currently rated 103. Made a winning debut for the West Ilsley team when beating Saleymm a length and a quarter in the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster last year off a mark of 102.

Johan was obviously the Lincoln winner last year and he has a few little issues and had a minor setback about February time. It meant we weren’t going to have him ready for the Lincoln, but he is fine and back in full work. I am hopeful you will see him in some of the big handicaps this year. He is a great horse to have around and there is a big one in him on his day.

Winner of two of his 9 starts and currently rated 93. Ended last season with a length and a quarter victory from Bell Rock in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket (1m 1f) last September off a mark of 86.

He is in great form, and I am chuffed with him. I think he is a well handicapped horse and I hope we can land another big pot before we move up to bigger and better things. He is working really well, and we are very happy. He has done everything at home, and we are ready to go.

Winner of three of her 41 starts and currently rated 81. Gained her last win at Newmarket (1m 6f) last August when beating Australian Angel two and a half lengths off a mark of 78.

She has been a great filly and always pays for herself in prize money. She can be a bit of bridesmaid, but she needs top of the ground and a mlle and six is probably her best trip. She will run plenty of times through the year and if she can win one or two races we will be delighted.

Three Year Olds

Gather ye rosebuds.

  • 3 Ch f Zoffany - Chelsey Jayne
She is a half-sister to Certain Lad and very nice. She has been working well and will be ready to run over a mile and a quarter when the turf starts.

Them That Can

  • 3 B f Kingman - Impressionist
She is nice filly who will be ready to go a mile and a quarter in May time.

Winner of two of her 7 starts and currently rated 99. Improved with every run last season and ended her campaign with a half-length victory from Keep In Touch in a Listed Fillies’ contest at Newmarket (1m) last October.

She is a very good filly, and she goes for the 1000 Guineas. Whether she is quite good enough to mix it at the top table we don’t know but we will see if she is. All of her training in the spring has been based around May 7th and she is on course for the Guineas as we stand. We are very happy with her and the intention is to go straight there.

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 83. Finished runner-up, beaten a nose, to Yorkshire in a novice event on his reappearance at Southwell (6f) this month.

He ran a cracker the other night at Southwell and only go caught on the line. He has been given a good opening mark and we will probably look at the six furlong three-year-old handicaps and go for the one at the Craven meeting which we won with Ingra Tor last year. Hopefully, he can go through the grades and be a very nice horse.

Flash Bardot (GB)

horse racing stable tours yorkshire

Placed in three of her 4 starts and currently rated 71. Finished third, beaten a length to Duke Of Oxford, in a novice event at Chelmsford (1m 2f) latest start.

She has been a bit of a bridesmaid this winter but she is a nice filly and I think she will be a better filly when we get on the turf. She’s proven she stays a mile and a quarter, and she could stay a bit further. She won’t be far off being in the winner’s enclosure and she is a nice filly.

Winner of one of his 4 starts and currently rated 72. Finished runner-up, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Mirabella Bay on his latest outing in a handicap at Wolverhampton (1m 4f) in March off his current mark.

“He is a lovely horse and he won for me earlier in the year and has had a couple of seconds. He is having a little bit of a break before we start a turf campaign with him, and I think he will be a nice stayer going forward.

horse racing stable tours yorkshire

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently 90. Finished last of seven, beaten only four and three quarter lengths, to Brave Emperor in a conditions event at Kempton (1m) in March.

He is a very nice horse, and we ran him in a conditions race at Kempton and ran a belter even though he finished last. They went a bit slow in that race and then just sprinted but he will have come on massively for that run, I think a stiff mile on the turf or a mile and a quarter will be his trip and we will look at something like the Esher Cup for him next. I think he will be a Saturday horse and run in some nice handicaps.

Finished runner-up, beaten four and a quarter lengths, to Bodorgan in a novice event at Newmarket in October.

He is a nice horse and he finished second at the backend of last year at Newmarket. He is ready to go and not far off running. He will run in a couple of novices before we get a handicap mark but he is an exciting horse for the summer.

Winner of two of her 8 starts and currently rated 82. Gained her last success when beating Felix Natalis two and a half lengths in a nursery at Newbury (5f) last August off a mark of 71.

She is a very nice filly, and she was a big filly as a two-year-old and very weak. She is a bigger stronger filly this year and I think she is very quick. I think she will stretch to six furlongs, but we are probably going to start off over five. I think she is a high-class filly and I hope she can go through the grades.

Placed in three of his 5 starts and currently rated 75. Finished third, beaten six and three quarter lengths, to Urban Outlook in a maiden at Lingfield (1m 2f) in March.

He is a nice horse and he got ironed out in a couple of novices’ this year, but I think he will be a good horse on the turf. We have had him gelded and I think that will have helped him mentally. He is a winner waiting to happen and we will go into handicaps and see what we can do.

Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 62. Off the mark in a handicap at Chelmsford (6f) in February when beating South Dakota Sioux three quarters of a length off a mark of 60.

She was my first winner, and I was very pleased with her. We ran her over six last time and she gave us the impression she wants stepping up in trip. Hopefully, she can win races through the summer for us.

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 83. Off the mark in a novice event at Goodwood (1m 1f) last October when beating Ramensky two and a half lengths.

He is a nice horse and a staying colt. We will start him off in a nice mile and a quarter/mile and a half handicap this year and I am hoping he is another who can go through the grades.

Winner of one of his 5 starts and currently rated 74. Finished third, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Just Bring It in a handicap at Kempton (1m) in March off a mark of 75.

He ran two nice races on the all-weather but he has been gelded and I think he will be better on the turf. He could be a nice horse through the summer.

Winner of two of his 3 starts and currently rated 80. Off the mark in a maiden at Chelmsford (1m) in February when beating Margaret’s Fuchsia three and a half lengths and followed up with a length and three quarter success from Wadacre Gomez in a novice event at Kempton (1m) in March.

Woodstock has done well and won two races and finished second. We will plot a handicap course with him and go from there.

Two Year Olds

  • 2 b c Calyx - Shanghai Rose
He is a lovely colt by Calyx and a big horse, but he does everything nice. He will probably be a backend six or seven furlong horse.
  • 2 b c Sixties Icon - Estrellada
He is a belter and reminds me of Legend Of Xanadu. I think he will be a six-furlong horse but will be ready to run over five. He is a typical Sixties Icon and a real little dinger - I am really happy with him.
  • 2 b c Inns of Court - Abiquio Unraced.
I think he will be a six-furlong colt but he is doing everything very well.
  • 2 b c Soldier’s Call - La Perla
He is pretty sharp and will probably be ready to rock and roll over five furlongs.
  • 2 b c Calyx - Gallic Star
He is a nice colt and is going to be one over seven furlongs. He is doing everything really well.
  • 2 b c Caravaggio - Sweet Dreams Baby
He is a lovely colt and has done everything we have asked of him. I think he will be starting off over six furlongs.

Miss Mach One

  • 2 b f Invincible Spirit - Promised Money
She is very quick and is likely to be one of my first two-year-old runners. She looks very sharp.

Saigon Dream

  • 2 b c Oasis Dream - Gracious Diana
He is a good-looking horse and working very nicely - I’m happy with him.
  • 2 b c Advertise - South Bay
I like the Advertises I have got and he looks pretty quick. He will be five or six furlongs May time.
  • 2 b f Advertise - Swingout Sister
We paid a lot of money for her, but she is a very nice filly. I would say she would be ready to go over five or six and she looks quite smart.
  • 2 ch f Bated Breath - The Thrill Is Gone
She is a nice filly, and she is bred to be quick, She came in a little bit late but is doing really nice and I am very happy with her.
  • 2 b f Profitable - Jillnextdoor
She is a nice filly, and she hasn't been with us long but she is doing well. She looks a nice filly
  • 2 b f Harry’s Angel - Never Lose
She is a nice filly who shows me a lot of speed but may need a little more time. The Harry’s Angels seem to come to hand as they get a little bit older
  • 2 b c Sixties Icon - Rebecca Romero
He is a half-brother to Miss Attitude and quick. He is a nice horse and going to be one over six furlongs. He won’t be too far away from running.
  • 2 b c Ulysses - Fervid
For a Ulysses, he shows me a lot of speed and he will be ready to rock and roll over five and six furlongs and is quite nice.
