Aside from multiple natural springs and seemingly endless amounts of hiking trails at greenbelts, there’s one place that often takes center stage in the Capital City: Lady Bird Lake, or Town Lake if you’re a longtime Austinite.

While there’s a miles-long trail that winds around this “lake” — which is just a dammed section of the Colorado River — in the warmer months, nothing beats a day on Lady Bird Lake using watercraft like kayaks, paddleboards and pedal boats. If you’re one of many who don’t have a personal watercraft to use for a day on Lady Bird Lake, fret not! There are tons of places to rent one in the Capital City.

Note : Children younger than 13 years old are required by law to wear a life jacket at all times when on the water. Those ages 13 and older must at least have a life jacket on board when renting a watercraft or they could face a fine. Each place on this list includes life jackets with rentals.

Rowing Dock

Rowing Dock is located on the south side of Lady Bird Lake, giving people the option to park underneath Mopac near the south hike and bike trailhead. This gives those looking to rent a watercraft the ability to start upstream and visit one of the main “party in the middle of the lake” destinations (IYKYK).

Though they’re currently experiencing uncertainty regarding the future of their lease, per a Change.org petition , this watercraft rental spot is still open to the public! Better yet, it’s the closest place to Barton Springs to rent a kayak, canoe or SUP board.

Texas Rowing Center

Texas Rowing Center is one of the more popular places to rent watercraft along Lady Bird Lake due to its proximity to hot spots like Deep Eddy Cabaret, Pool Burger and Juiceland — all of which are stellar places to stop before or after a day on the water.

Hours : 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Capital Cruises not only offers boat excursions that start near Vic Mathias Shores, but they also have motorless watercraft rentals, too! However, because the dock is also used for boat cruises, SUP board rentals must be returned before the departure of nighttime cruises like the bat cruise that departs shortly after 7 p.m.

Live Love Paddle

Live Love Paddle is another place to rent watercraft on the east side of Interstate 35. There is a storefront along Riverside Drive on the ground floor of the AMLI South Shore building, and a storage unit near the water that holds the rental SUP boards, canoes and kayaks. So, don’t freak out when you see how far from Lady Bird Lake the physical store is.

Free bike ride spotlights temporary art exhibits along Lady Bird Lake

A round 30 Austinites beat the heat early by cruising on two wheels and checking out recently installed temporary art exhibitions near Lady Bird Lake.

The Trail Conservancy and Sunday Cruise ATX put on the free 8-mile bike ride on Sunday.

Riders started in East Austin and stopped at three temporary art exhibitions along the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, hearing from the artists.

The installations are part of the TEMPO on the Trail program from The Trail Conservancy and the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department. Each artist received $25,000 to design, fabricate and install their temporary artwork between March and June.

According to The Trail Conservancy’s website, “TEMPO aims to cultivate curiosity, spark imagination and encourage exploration of the vibrant city of Austin through temporary art installations.”

“Johnny Walker’s art specifically is a bunch of benches, and it’s an opportunity encouraging folks that are along the trail to stop and have a conversation, and that’s a big thing,” said Valerie Ruiz, an organizer with Sunday Cruise ATX. “My passions are … bikes, photography and bringing people together, and so, when I saw that it just seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

Ruiz and officials with The Trail Conservancy say more free community rides are happening soon.

“Everyone is welcome to join,” said Ruiz. “It’s a very beginner-friendly ride, and that ride happens regularly. Bike story night happens quarterly. But I encourage everyone to get on their bikes. This is a great city.”
