The Best USA Road Trips In July

best road trip in july

It’s no secret that when summertime rolls around, we start daydreaming of all the road trips we want to take. White sandy beaches, stunning waterfalls, scenic drives with the top down on a jeep? Find a good playlist and you’re making memories to last a lifetime. Here are the best places to travel in July in the United States!

P.S. In the US, the 4th of July is a national holiday, and even when it falls on a weekend – we’re typically rewarded with an extra day off that weekend. It’s one of the busiest times to travel during the summer so make sure you plan ahead!!

A Gilmore Girls Adventure in Connecticut

Starting with a more off-the-beaten-path location for your summer road trip – consider Connecticut! Home to the birthplace of the American hamburger, miles of sandy beaches, and the inspiration for Gilmore Girls – you’ll find plenty to do in this tiny state.

Connecticut Lighthouse, Summer Road Trips, Travel This Summer, Best Places to Travel in July, Summer Road Trip, 4th of July, travel this summer,

Starting your road trip from New York City, you can enter Connecticut within an hour by car (45 minutes by train). From there, start driving North to the tiny towns of Leightfield like Washinton and Bantam that inspired Amy Sherman-Palladino to create the idyllic Stars Hollow. You’ll immediately find yourself immersed in a very Gilmore Girls vibe! These tiny towns were the inspiration for the show with charming shops around every corner and not a Starbucks in sight!

After getting your Gilmore Girls fix, head about 40 minutes east to Lake Campounce , America’s oldest theme park ! Operating since 1846, Lake Compounce has a waterpark and regular rides for a refreshing break from the summer heat.

Once you’ve eaten all the cotton candy your stomach can handle, hop back in the car and head to Gilette Castle State Park! Perched on the beautiful Connecticut River, Gilette Castle is a mid-evil fortress completed in 1919, and open to the public. The over 140-acre grounds would be breathtaking to walk through at dusk!

Connecticut’s Coast

Following a tour of the delightful Gilette castle, take your summer road trip to the coast, starting with the charming town of Old Saybrook. Along with lighthouses dotting the shore, you’ll soon run into Connecticut’s pristine, two-mile-long Hammonasset Beach . Before continuing on your journey down the coast, we highly recommend spending an afternoon lounging here! It’s one of the best places to travel to in July for uncrowded beaches! (But maybe not 4th of July…)

  • Make sure you grab a lobster roll while in Connecticut! If you’ve never experienced one before – your summer road trip won’t be complete without one of these New England native delicacies. Lobster meat slathered in mayonnaise, butter, and lemon juice sauce on a fresh hot dog bun is one of the most delicious things you’ll eat in the Northeast!

Eat your lobster roll, catch some sun, and then continue down the coast to New Haven. New Haven is home to two of the things America is most famous for: Yale University and the American Hamburger!!

  • Yale University: Why would you want to stroll through a college campus? Not only was it the college stomping grounds for our favorite young Gilmore Girl, Rory, the grounds themselves are also picturesque. Founded in 1701, you can take a guided tour through the historic 136 acres of architectural masterpieces!
  • Louis Lunch: The birthplace of the American Hamburger according to Congress !! Established in 1895 – this 4th generation family business still serves their burgers on white toast, with only cheese onion, and tomatoes for garnishes.

When you think of beaches in the United States – most people think of Florida, California, and Hawaii. There is even a 40 year old National Sandcastle Building Contest in mid-July at Delaware Seashore State Park … we would definitely participate and let the good-natured competitiveness take over!

  • Most Popular Beaches in Delaware: Broadkill Beach, Fenwick Island, Lewes Beach, Cape Henlopen State Park, and Delaware Seashore State Park

other Than The Beach

When you’re done frolicking in the Atlantic, you can head to a few more of Delaware’s claims to fame.

  • Dogfish Head Brewery – home to one of Ev’s favorite beers: the Dogfish 120 Minute IPA! Since Ev used to live close, he’s actually been to this brewery quite a few times and said the best part is their restaurant!
  • Trap Pond State Park : The home of Delaware’s Cyprus Tree Swamp – this location is famous for kayaking on the East Coast!

One of the best summer road trips you can take in the eastern US is the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Parkway runs 469 miles through Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by emerald-green mountains, late-season wildflowers, vibrant wild mushrooms, and rushing waterfalls.

As the name suggests, Mount Rainier National Park surrounds the iconic Washington landmark, Mount Rainier. It is full of hiking and gorgeous fire lookout towers you can even stay at!

Olympic National Park is on the coast and not only has beautiful beaches and mountains, but much of it is also a rainforest. North Cascades borders Canada, and while a bit less developed than most National Parks it is still worth the visit and is a great place for backpacking, camping, and it is a world-class photography destination!

This road trip is perfect for outdoors and natures lovers, but if you’re a city person, you can also fly into or make stops at Portland and Seattle! Portland is full of “weird” things to do, and a trip isn’t complete without a visit to Powell’s Books or Voodoo Doughnuts. In Seattle, take a drive to Snoqualmie Falls and visit the iconic Pikes Place Market and Space Needle.

9. Road to Hana in Maui

The island of Maui is mostly associated with waving palms and picture-perfect beaches. But did you know that this tropical paradise has much more to offer? The eastern coast is wild, lush, and home to a highway with no less than 59 one-lane bridges and 620 curves and hairpins over a distance of 52 miles. The Road to Hana connects the artistic town of Paia to rural Hana.

The destination in itself is not that spectacular but it’s the journey that makes this road trip truly legendary. From majestic waterfalls to rainbow eucalyptus trees and from colored beaches to tropical arboretums, the winding Hana highway connects dozens of the Valley Isle’s natural highlights. Along the way, you’ll find the quaintest food stalls selling mouth-watering local delicacies such as banana bread or coconut candy.

The Road to Hana counts as Hawaii’s most epic road trip so, especially on sunshiny days, there’ll be lots of people driving the same highway and stopping to see the same highlights (where there’s hardly any parking available). Therefore, leaving early is highly recommended. Also, pack plenty of water and snacks since there are no gas stations and no shops (other than the food stalls) along the Road to Hana. This is the ultimate road trip for adventurers who look forward to exploring Maui’s wild side.

10. Route 66

Route 66 is a great summer road trip option for couples, families, and solo travelers alike. Known as the “Mother Road”, Route 66 begins in Chicago, Illinois, and ends in Santa Monica, California. At 2,448 miles, to drive the entire length would be quite a road trip, but even completing a section would make for a great summer vacation for those who love quirky roadside stops and vintage memorabilia.

Some notable stops along the way are classic Route 66 diners such as the Midpoint Cafe in Texas, at the exact midpoint of Route 66, Pops in Oklahoma, a vintage diner and old school soda shop, and the Big Texan Steakhouse, known for its large portions. Some famous roadside attractions are Cadillac Ranch, the Standin on the Corner mural in Winslow, Arizona, and the donkeys that roam free in Oatman, Arizona.

Other well-known cities and towns along Route 66 with many things to do are Williams and Flagstaff in Arizona, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma, and Springfield, and St. Louis, Missouri.

If you are looking for popular, nostalgic places to stay along Route 66, then check out the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona, which was used as inspiration for the Cars movie (as was much of Route 66) and La Posada Hotel in Winslow, home to a famous railroad hotel that celebrities used to frequent. In addition, this Route 66 summer road trip can be combined with plenty of other side trip options to visit national parks like the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest.

Route 66 - Summer Road Trips in USA

11. San Francisco to Los Angeles

California’s Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles is 479 miles of killer coastal views, sandy beaches, hikes, and wineries. If you hurry, you can drive it in 10 hours, but what’s the rush? This classic summer road trip is meant to be savored.

Some of the best stops on the Pacific Coast Highway road trip , include Monterey Bay, This deep bay harbors some of California’s most diverse marine life. You can take an otter safari on the Elkhorn Slough, a whale watching boat, or see the eerie jellyfish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Big Sur. This narrow stretch of the road is bordered by steep forest on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Take a hike in the Point Lobos nature reserve or stop to see the lovely McWay waterfall at Julia Pfeiffer beach.

If you’re a wine lover, Paso Robles OR Cambria has over 200 wineries. If you are more into history, then stay on the coast and visit Hearst Castle, which is just north of Cambria.

Pismo Beach is one of the most gorgeous beaches in the US and the only one in California which allows you to drive right onto the beach. So, pack a picnic and stay awhile.

12. Southwest USA

The American Southwest is one of the most memorable and unique regions of the United States. With numerous national parks, waterfalls, scenic hikes, and panoramic landscapes, the area is a nature lover’s paradise. The perfect Southwest USA road trip itinerary should ideally include portions of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Although you could spend months exploring the southwest US and barely scratch the surface, give yourself at least 2 weeks to road trip through the region. Start your road trip in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and head north into Southern Colorado to see two of the state’s best natural and cultural wonders: Great Sand Dunes and Mesa Verde National Parks.

From there, you’ll head west to explore the Mighty 5 National Parks of Utah. Spend a few days in Moab and do some hiking in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Be sure to wake up early one morning and hike to Delicate Arch, one of the state’s most notable landmarks.

Your road trip should continue through Capitol Reef National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and down to Bryce and Zion National Park. Zion is one of the country’s most visited national parks, and for good reason. The famed park is home to two of the most acclaimed hikes in the USA, Angel’s Landing and The Narrows.

Of course, no trip to the American southwest would be complete without a stop at the Grand Canyon to take in the majestic, sweeping views. If planning a road trip to the southwest, be sure to pack plenty of hiking gear, as this area is best explored one trailhead at a time.

13. South Dakota

Most people look at South Dakota for a visit to Mount Rushmore National Monument, but there is so much more adventure throughout the western side of the state that makes the perfect road trip for any nature lover or history buff. Plan your route through 3 areas to experience all the best South Dakota has to offer: Spearfish Canyon, Badlands National Park, and Custer State Park. You can see a lot in just one day in each area, but they are all worthy of a bit more time if you have it.

It’s certainly no ordinary road trip when you travel through South Dakota on the scenic byways through Spearfish Canyon, Iron Mountain Road, Wildlife Loop Road (make sure to pack extra apples and carrots to feed the “begging burros” along the way), and Needles Highway.

Nature lovers and outdoor adventurers will love hiking the trails (don’t miss the Notch Trail in Badlands NP), some epic camping spots in the parks and in the Black Hills National Forest, and plenty of wildlife.

History buffs will enjoy touring the Delta-09 Missile Silo National Historic Site, Crazy Horse Memorial, and exploring Deadwood, SD, which offers unique sights such as the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center and Mount Moriah Cemetery.

And no road trip through South Dakota is complete without a stop at Wall Drug for some shopping and their famous hot roast beef sandwich!

15 Great Road Trips in the USA to take this Summer

Are you itching for a new adventure? I know I am! With isolation restrictions easing slowly, now is a great time to start planning a road trip. With international travel restrictions likely to be here for the remainder of 2020, there is no better time to start exploring your own backyard. What better time to plan one of these great road trips in the USA! These are our top picks for the best adventures around the country this summer.

best road trip in july

1. Phoenix to Page Arizona

One of my favourite memories in the United States was a road trip the length of Arizona. I started in Phoenix, slowly making my way to the top of the state and ending in Page. There are many great pit stops along the way, so this adventure needs at least a few days to complete (it would be better if you have a week).

Don’t miss out on Sedona , a beautiful town full of many great day hikes, climbing and mountain bike trails. Page is the last town before the border to Utah and it is here where you will find many of Arizona’s famous photographic points of interest. Horseshoe Bend, the slot canyons in Navajo country and The Wave are just a few!

2. Pacific Coast Highway

The West Coast is an adventure waiting to happen, especially if you like to escape the cities and explore the coastline. The Pacific Coast Highway is full of hidden gems, all situated between Los Angeles to San Francisco. You can do the drive in one day, though you will find it much more enjoyable by spending a night or two near the coast. Carmel-by-the-sea is a great base to stop for a few days and enjoy the slower pace of Californian coast life.

Guide to Joshua Tree | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

3. Joshua Tree National Park

If you live in Los Angeles, there’s no better escape than a mystical weekend away in Joshua Tree . The National Park aside, there are some great vintage thrift stores , swap meets on weekends, book stores and above all, the towns have a real quirky appeal.

If you plan to stay a few days, check in to the tiny cabin of Joshua Tree for a romantic escape, or there are plenty of great cabin rentals for larger groups. Of course, the National Park is the big drawcard for visitors and there are plenty of great short hikes to be discovered. However, be sure to spend a little more time discovering the small towns once you’ve seen the famous Joshua Trees as there’s a lot more to discover!

best road trip in july

4. San Antonio to Austin, Texas

There are many great reasons to visit Texas but my two favourites are San Antonio and Austin. Both of these cities have such great personalities, so a road trip between the two is a guaranteed good time. If you find yourself in San Antonio, one of my favourite hotels in the world is here – Hotel Emma . There’s a really great emerging scene of creative people in this area of the city and it is perfect for those in need of inspiration.

best road trip in july

5. New Orleans to Baton Rouge

The South is full of so many great adventures and I learned that first hand on a road trip through Louisiana about five years ago. There’s just so much culture and history waiting to be discovered! New Orleans is a melting pot of French, African, American and French-Canadian cultures is reflected in its Creole and Cajun cultures. This city is vibrant, bustling and most importantly: delicious! Make your way from New Orleans to Baton Rouge for a fun road trip discovering the culture of this southeastern state.

Guide to Newport Rhode Island | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

6. New York to Newport, RI

If you are based on the East Coast of the United States, road trips are part and parcel of the summer experience! One of my favourite destinations to visit is Newport in Rhode Island . This picturesque seaside town has enough charm to keep you coming back time and time again. The road trip to Newport from New York is especially beautiful, passing through Connecticut, one of the country’s most scenic states.

Weekend Guide to Upstate Neww York | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

7. Upstate New York

The East Coast of the USA is filled with beautiful small towns to discover. But you don’t even need to leave New York to have an idyllic escape! Upstate New York is full of beautiful hidden gems and some of them more known. Start your journey in Hudson – one of the most popular towns in the state. Then ask locals for recommendations as you go along.

best road trip in july

8. The Great Smoky Mountains

It was many years ago I drove through the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, but it is a trip I have certainly not forgotten. Straddling the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, this mountain range is one of the most beautiful drives to be had on this side of the country and summer is considered the best time to visit.

9. Route 66

Starting in Chicago, Route 66 takes you all the way to the Californian coast and finishes in Santa Monica. The route will take you across much of the American Midwest, Great Plains and Southwest. It is widely considered the classic American route across the country and one of the great road trips in the USA. However, you can’t *really* take the old original route, but you can still travel much of the same scenery on various highways.

arcadia national park

10. Park Loop Acadia National Park

The East Coast of the United States is bursting with endless road trips, each more beautiful than the next! Another top pick is the Park Loop in Acadia National Park in Maine. This is one of the most scenic parks in the entire country and not to be missed. This 26-mile route will show you all the highlights and introduce you to the lifestyle in Maine.

best road trip in july

11. Oregon Coast Highway

Driving the Oregon Coast is one of the surreal moments in life you probably think don’t actually happen anymore. While there are many more celebrated drives on the West Coast, this is one of those road trips flying under the radar. The best part about Oregon is the laidback lifestyle and no-rush attitude, making this one of the most soul-fulfilling journeys to take by road.

best road trip in july

12. Maine Lobster Trail

If you’re a seafood lover, you can’t pass up the opportunity to visit Maine and drive the lobster trail. Throughout Maine there are endless restaurants dedicated to seafood and specifically, lobster. This is the perfect weekend escape on the East Coast, filled with endless small villages and friendly locals. As far as road trips in the USA go, this is the quintessential east coast experience.

best road trip in july

13. The Alaskan Highway

A drive on the Alaska Highway can take anywhere from 60 hours to ten days. This is not only one of the best road trips in the USA, but also crosses Canada. Much of the journey takes place in the Yukon Territory and is indescribably beautiful! This is widely regarded as one of the most adventurous road trips in North America.

best road trip in july

14. Zion National Park, Utah

Utah is practically bursting at the seams with road trip opportunities. But if we had to pick just one journey, we’d opt for a road trip through Zion National Park. The park borders Arizona, with the closest town on that side of the border being Page. This is where you will find beautiful locations like Horseshoe Bend and the Slot Canyons. Therefore this is a great add-on after an adventure through Arizona!

best road trip in july

15. Black Hills Of South Dakota

If you’re anything like me, you’ve always wanted to visit South Dakota. Which basically just means you watched the film “Richie Rich” as a kid. South Dakota has some stunning scenery in the Black Hills. This underrated state was practically made for the great all American road trip!

With highs between the low 60s and mid-70s and an abundance of daylight hours, the outdoors call during the summertime in Norway's capital city. Take a ferry or bus to spend a day at the Bygdøy peninsula, which boasts picturesque views of the area's natural landscape, as well as museums, beaches and walking and running trails for travelers to enjoy. Oslo visitors can also lounge on one of the urban beaches found around the city or explore the more than 60 miles of inlet at Oslo Fjord.

best road trip in july

July is one of the busiest times of year to visit this popular Washington state national park. With low precipitation and average temperatures sitting comfortably in the 60s and 70s, it is the perfect time to explore must-see sights like Hurricane Ridge and Hoh Rain Forest, which is thought to be one of the quietest destinations in the United States. Just keep in mind, you won't be the only one hiking through the spectacular scenery. Avoid the crowds by visiting outside of the park's peak hours (between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.).

best road trip in july

Zanzibar, a Tanzanian archipelago, is an ideal, relaxed vacation spot if you're looking for coral white sands, turquoise waters and abundance of marine life. July, which sits in the dry season, is a perfect time to hit the beach. Beyond the sand, visit the UNESCO–listed Stone Town to see where African, Arabic, Indian and European cultures collide. Music lovers can visit the Freddie Mercury Museum, dedicated to the legendary musician who was born here. And no trip to Zanzibar would be complete without a spice tour to learn more about the rich history of the island.

best road trip in july

Situated at the foot of the Swiss Alps and on the shoreline of Lake Geneva, Montreux, Switzerland, is a picturesque musical muse destination in July. The city hosts the Montreux Jazz Festival throughout the month, and close to 250,000 music lovers descend upon the area for endless days of jazz. Montreux was immortalized in the final Queen album, and visitors can snap pictures of Freddie Mercury's statue by the lake. Beyond musical attractions, travelers can cruise the largest lake in the Alps, visit the Lavaux vineyards or swim among the many beaches found in the area.

best road trip in july

If you don't mind sharing the view from scenic overlooks like Mount Solaro and the Gardens of Augustus with hordes of other tourists, July is one of the most quintessential times to visit this Italian island in the Bay of Naples. Balmy temperatures in the 80s and minimal rainfall are ideal for posting up on a beach, taking a boat tour of the Blue Grotto and dining alfresco in Marina Grande. Plus, summer nights in Capri are great for enjoying the island's many lively bars and clubs.

best road trip in july

Known for its luxurious resorts and striking pink sand beaches (Horseshoe Bay Beach and Warwick Long Bay are two visitor favorites), this British overseas territory beckons to travelers seeking a relaxing summer vacation. Average temperatures in Bermuda hover in the mid-80s in July, making it an ideal time for engaging in water activities like swimming and snorkeling. This is also one of the best times for fishing on the island – July draws anglers from all over the world looking to compete in the Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship.

best road trip in july

There are many reasons to visit Juneau in July. Not only is this the warmest month of the year (daytime highs sit in the low 60s), but the days are long and the city's attractions, some of which close in the winter, are open for business. July is also prime whale watching season in Alaska's capital city and one of the best times of year for bear viewing. Although you'll spend more on airfare and accommodations by visiting during Juneau's peak season, you'll also be able to enjoy must-see sights like the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Gardens without the frigid temperatures.

best road trip in july

Considered one of the best summer vacation destinations in the U.S., Seattle offers travelers plenty to do in July. One of Oregon's top travel destinations also happens to be home to one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Cannon Beach, a small coastal town in northwest Oregon, boasts nearly 4 miles of sandy beach characterized by its spectacular rock formations (including Haystack Rock), tide pools and robust birdwatching opportunities. In July, crowds descend upon the area and hotels book up fast, but this is a small price to pay for the pleasant daytime temperatures in the mid-60s and low chance of rain.

best road trip in july

Summer brings warm weather and a full roster of events to this southern California beach town. Although this means longer lines and inflated room rates, July is one of the best times of year to enjoy activities like snorkeling at La Jolla Cove or strolling through Balboa Park, home of the famed San Diego Zoo. With average highs in the mid-70s, travelers can enjoy sightseeing in the Ribeira district, strolling across famous bridges like the Dom Luís I Bridge and wine tasting (Porto's namesake port wine is a must-try) without the stifling heat and humidity that other European cities see in summer. For visitors who need a break from the sunshine, the city offers the ornate Livraria Lello bookstore and the National Museum Soares dos Reis, Portugal's first public art museum.

best road trip in july

Travel to this small college town in the south of France if your perfect summer getaway includes meandering down tree-lined boulevards and sipping coffee at charming cafes. July brings an influx of tourists, causing airfare prices and room rates to spike. But if you can swing it, the comfortable temperatures in the 70s and 80s make hiking Mont Sainte-Victoire and exploring popular thoroughfares like Cours Mirabeau a treat. What's more, the region's famed lavender is typically in peak bloom this month, so take a day trip to the surrounding countryside for a glimpse of the fragrant fields of purple.

best road trip in july

Known for its inhabitants' longevity and as the birthplace of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, Ikaria is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal place to visit in July. The island's most famous beach, Seychelles, whose crystal-clear waters are surrounded by cliffs and rocks, is a picturesque place to spend the day. You can also learn about the island's history at the Archaeological Museum of Agios Kirykos. But July's most unique draws are Ikaria's renowned summer festivals, where visitors can dance, sample Ikarian wine and party with the locals well into the morning.

best road trip in july

Sitting about 700 miles east of Madagascar, Mauritius draws sun-seeking travelers in droves. When you're not relaxing on the African island's pristine white sand beaches, go for a ride on the longest zip line in the Indian Ocean or explore Black River Gorges National Park's numerous hiking trails. With so much natural beauty to behold (think: verdant rainforests, stunning lagoons and breathtaking waterfalls) it's easy to see why Mauritius is lauded as one of the world's best island destinations . Plus, thanks to its location near the equator, Mauritius offers sunny skies and temps in the 70s in July.

The Great American Summer Road Trip: Unforgettable Scenic Drives in the United States

Americans drive more than 3 trillion miles in a typical year, according to an estimate from the Federal Highway Administration . The months with the most drivers on the road are July and August, indicating that for a sizable chunk of Americans, summer travel means traveling by car. On some special byways, the journey itself can become the destination, taking you through a 3-D version of “America the Beautiful” lyrics, complete with spacious skies, purple mountain majesties, and amber waves of grain. Not to mention rugged coasts, sunset-red desert expanses, and glimpses of bygone Americana. So buckle up—here are our favorite scenic drives in the United States.

Pictured above: Interstate 40 East, near the Arizona-New Mexico border

The Big Sur Bridge along California Route 1

Given its size and embarrassment of natural riches, California was made for road trips. The most scenic of the state’s many scenic stretches of pavement hugs the jagged sliver where North America meets the Pacific Ocean. Traveling north to south along the Big Sur Coast from Carmel to Cambria, California Route 1 twists and turns along 1,200-foot cliffs flanked by crashing waves and redwood forests. You can also see sunbathing sea lions, charming villages and artist communities, the only waterfall on the continent that empties into the Pacific, and Big Sur Bridge (aka Bixby Bridge, pictured above), one of the most photographed sights in California. Start thinking up synonyms for “stunning” now. The landscape here can be unstable, and every so often (such as in 2017 and 2021), portions of the cliffside route collapse from erosion and need to be rebuilt. Check ahead to ensure the way will be clear, and have alternative inland detours in mind.

An Atlantic Coast alternative : On the other end of North America, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway links 43 barrier isles via a 100-mile overseas route with endless ocean vistas extending from either side.

Fair warning : In both California and Florida, traffic reaches its peak in the summer months. But you’re not in a hurry—that’s why you’re taking the scenic route, right?

Red bus tour on the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Montana's Glacier National Park

An engineering marvel when it opened during the Great Depression, the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road slices through Montana ’s Glacier National Park from east to west, providing a thorough and convincing case for what makes the place special. Starting out in valleys filled with cedar forests and impossibly clear lakes, cars climb past spectacular mountain views (including of the peak the road is named after) and surprises like the Weeping Wall—a waterfall that spills right onto the road—before crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, the road’s highest point at 6,646 feet. The journey is strictly a summertime proposition: Heavy snowfall makes it too dangerous to traverse from mid-fall to early June.

Not up to the drive? If you’re not the steady-behind-the-wheel type, the road’s narrow two lanes, hairpin turns, and dizzying altitudes might be too much. In that case, you can always opt for a guided tour aboard one of the park’s vintage red buses (pictured above).

For an even more remote experience : Take on the drive from Anchorage to Valdez in Alaska , where that state’s supercharged scenery—including glaciers, enormous mountain ranges, and sheer cliffs of ice—is on full display.

On the Keanae Peninsula, off Maui's Hana Highway in Hawaii

Hawaii’s Hana Highway , which runs along Maui ’s northeastern shore starting in Kahului, covers 50 miles but takes at least three hours (and at most a full day) to drive from end to end. That’s partly because the road has some 600 sharp curves and more than 50 one-lane bridges, and partly because you'll want to stop in numerous spots to get out of the car and wade into waterfall pools, breathe in the scents of wild ginger and plumeria flowers, sample bananas and mangos from roadside fruit stands, and snap photos of verdant hillsides lined with black- and red-sand beaches. The highway eventually ends up in the earthly paradise that is Hana , a still-secluded, still-unspoiled village in a coastal rainforest.

Start early : You want to take your time on the road to Hana, but you don’t want to be stuck in a bumper-to-bumper crawl. To beat the busiest traffic times—midmorning to afternoon—start out just before sunrise.

A Caribbean alternative : The Panoramic Route  (Ruta Panorámica) in Puerto Rico is a network of roads stretching for more than 150 miles through the island’s central mountains, past waterfalls, lush valleys, and Taino ruins.

Planning help : Order our paperback guide to Maui or download the affordable e-book.

Route 12 through Red Canyon in Utah

You can’t drive on the surface of Mars, but you can easily pretend that’s what you’re doing on State Route 12 in Utah . The 120-mile scenic byway’s western end begins amid the rust-colored rock formations of Red Canyon (pictured above) before leading into the northern portion of Bryce Canyon National Park , where an eerie, orange-tinted expanse of skinny limestone towers called hoodoos fills the canyon floor. Continuing eastward, you can learn about the region’s native peoples at Anasazi State Park , pop into offbeat cafes and art galleries, and admire far-reaching views amid groves of aspen trees on Boulder Mountain . Mars, meanwhile, doesn’t even have oxygen.

Limited access : Route 12 has only two main entry points—from U.S. Highway 89 near the town of Panguitch on the western side, and from Highway 24 in Torrey in the east. Plan accordingly.

Quicker version :  More red rocks can be viewed along the far shorter—but still ruggedly beautiful— Route 179 in Arizona , which runs about 14.5 miles between Camp Verde and the rose-hued city of Sedona .

Mabry Mill along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Meadows of Dan, Virginia

Some would argue that the Blue Ridge Parkway  is just as spectacular as the two national parks it was built to connect: Shenandoah in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina. It’s certainly not hard to see what attracts road trippers to the 469-mile, two-lane parkway—panoramas of hazy, blue-tinged mountains (the show-stopping peak is the nearly 6,000-foot Grandfather Mountain on the North Carolina side) as well as more intimate scenes of woods, valleys, and down-home Appalachian living. The culture and contributions of the region’s human inhabitants are represented at craft fairs, old country stores, comfort-food restaurants, the Blue Ridge Music Center in Galax, Virginia, and more picturesquely rough-hewn farmhouses than you’d find in a Thomas Kinkade Company showroom.

Come back in autumn to stock up on apple butter, roam mountain orchards, and see the forested hillsides after they’ve turned yellow, orange, red, and gold.

Rocky Mountains alternative : On the other side of the Mississippi, the best drive in the West's most iconic range is  Colorado 's 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway , which climbs to the top of that 14,114-foot beauty.

People climbing Sleeping Bear Dunes next to Lake Michigan

After a brief dash through a forest of beech and maple trees, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in northern Michigan , near Traverse City, opens onto dramatic views of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore—where giant, sandy bluffs tower as high as 450 feet next to sparkling Lake Michigan. Named after the lumberjack who built the road in the 1960s, the Pierce Stocking loop is only about 7.5 miles long, but there are so many good spots to stop and linger, it’ll take you a while to finish the journey. Plenty of visitors set up beach chairs in the sand to watch the sunset over the water. If you like a challenge, you can climb the dunes, though it’s a strenuous chore that might remind you of that dream where you’re trying to run up a hill but can’t make any forward progress.

Come back in autumn to check out the foliage along the forested portion of the drive, especially near the quaint covered bridge.

For the true dunes enthusiast : Make your way to Nebraska and drive along  Highway 2 amid gently rolling, grass-covered sandhills frequented by flocks of migrating cranes in the spring.

Sipping wine and listening to live music in Texas Hill Country

The second-largest wine-growing region in the United States by acreage is Texas Hill Country , the lush, rolling landscape north of San Antonio. Eighteen wineries are connected along 30 miles of Highway 290 , between Fredericksburg  (pictured above) and Johnson City. In addition to seeing cultivated grapes, you can spot the region’s famous wildflowers in the spring and early summer (bluebonnets blanket the hills in March and April). Many towns in the area, including Fredericksburg, retain links to their founders‘ German heritage, on display in architecture, place names, and local restaurants serving schnitzel and strudel. Also along the route: the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park in Stonewall, where you can tour the former president’s birthplace and ranch.

Designated driver : If you’re going to be tasting wines along 290, park your car and rely on the handy hop-on, hop-off wine shuttle .

Wine country classic : Another great drive for appreciating American viticulture is California’s iconic Silverado Trail , a quiet country road (especially compared with nearby Highway 29) that connects Napa and Calistoga via 30 miles filled with dozens of wineries.

Lobster Pot seafood restaurant in Provincetown

On the raised arm and fist that is Cape Cod , the historic Massachusetts Route 6A runs along the bicep all the way up to the knuckles. Also known as the Old King’s Highway, the 62-mile drive strings together one charming bayside village after another, starting with the Cape’s oldest town, Sandwich . You should count on making a day of it. Snap photos of 19th-century sea captains’ homes in Barnstable . Do your best imitation of a frolicking Kennedy on the beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore . At the tip of the Cape, enjoy the hubbub of Provincetown , a resort village notable for being a brief pre-Plymouth stopover for the Pilgrims and, today, a pilgrimage site for LGBTQ+ travelers. Then turn around and retrace your route around the Cape, catching what you missed the first time.

Summer crowds are large on the Cape, but Route 6A is often less clogged with tourists than Route 6 and, especially, Route 28. If you get caught in one of Cape Cod’s legendary traffic jams, you could always console yourself with a stop at a roadside clam shack.

For a fuller survey of New England : Hit the nearly 500-mile Connecticut River Byway , which follows the region’s longest river through the hills, farmland, and quaint villages of three states—Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

The Chicago skyline along Lake Michigan

Because Chicago ’s winters get such bad press, it’s probably not common knowledge outside the Midwest that the city truly shines in summer, when residents—who’ve learned to seize sunny days when they get them—stream outdoors for street festivals, patio dining, and communion with their beloved lakefront. A great way to sample this yearly display of fleeting sun worship is with a trip along one of the nation’s greatest urban thoroughfares, Lake Shore Drive , which runs for nearly 16 miles from Hollywood Avenue on the north side to Marquette Drive in the south. On one side of your car: sailboats bobbing in a dazzling, bright blue Lake Michigan bordered by sandy beaches, parkland, and paved pathways bustling with joggers and cyclists. On the other side: the iconic skyline of a city famous for its innovative architecture .

Keep driving and you can eventually work your way around the entire lake via the Lake Michigan Circle Tour, which showcases urban as well as woodsy waterside scenery in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Another incredible city drive is the Las Vegas Strip —and we mean “incredible” in the literal sense. No matter how many times you’ve been to Vegas , it’s still somehow difficult to believe that the neon behemoths lining its most famous thoroughfare aren’t a desert mirage after all.

Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island

For a drive that lets you look at spectacular views as well as look back at a fascinating chapter in American history, it’s hard to beat Newport, Rhode Island . This wedge of land in Naragansett Bay was the preferred summer playground for the country’s wealthiest families in the latter half of the 19th century and into the early years of the 20th—the so-called Gilded Age. Along Newport’s Bellevue Avenue and Ocean Drive loop , these rapacious industrialists built over-the-top mansions inspired by the palaces of Europe and called them “cottages,” which was either false modesty or true obnoxiousness. As you make your way along the rocky coastline, you can tour many of the homes, including the most famous, The Breakers and Marble House (pictured above), built for two generations of Vanderbilts.

Keep looking back at Fort Adams, a former Army post in Newport that dates to 1799.

Another chapter of history is commemorated on the Natchez Trace Parkway , which covers much of the same ground in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi as a footpath used for centuries by Native Americans and, during the 19th century, by traders, explorers, and soldiers.

In the minds of many, trips to Puerto Rico bring images of stunning beaches , delicious foods , and maybe a bioluminescent bay or two . That history can be explored via a road trip. Starting in the northern town of Arecibo, travel south to Ponce, then back north to Condado—along the way you’ll encounter petroglyphs, Indigenous sites, and breathtaking natural spots.

The drive can be completed in three hours, but if you plan to stop at any of the national parks, state parks, or museums or explore the scenic backways or hiking trails along Highway 12 then you’ll need to plan to spend a few days in the area!

3. Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most famous road trip routes in the United States.

The Blue Ridge Parkway drive is 469 miles, and it connects two national parks, namely Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Here are the five regions and the drive time through each one:

  • Shenandoah: Afton to Roanoke – 3.5 hours
  • Ridge: Roanoke to Fancy Gap – 2.5 hours
  • Plateau: Fancy Gap to Blowing Rock – 3 hours
  • Highlands: Blowing Rock to Asheville – 3 hours
  • Pisgah: Asheville to Cherokee – 3 hours

The views you’ll see along the parkway are amazing – stop often to take pictures. And don’t forget to explore the area by taking in some hiking trails.

4. The Outer Banks, North Carolina

Route 12 on the Outer Banks in North Carolina should be on your road trip bucket list!

This route starts at Bodie Lighthouse and passes through the narrow spits of land, making up the barrier islands protecting North Carolina’s mainland from the Atlantic Ocean.

There are many fun stops and things to do along Highway 12 like the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the sand dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park, piers and lighthouses, Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to name a few.

5. Overseas Highway, Florida Keys

The Overseas Highway, Florida Keys is another well-known road trip destination.

It’s often referred to as the “highway that goes to the sea” since it crosses over 42 bridges and runs 113 miles.

Because the road offers unique features you can’t find anywhere else, it’s been named an All-American Road.

Here are the must-stop areas along the route: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine & Lower Keys and Key West.

6. Kentucky Bourbon Trail

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a route that will take you to 18 different distilleries, each with its famous bourbon mix and the history behind each one of them.

7. Million Dollar Highway, Colorado

The Million Dollar Highway section of US Highway 550 connects Ouray and Silverton, Colorado.

If you enjoy mountain views, and don’t mind a windy road with steep drops on one side, then you can’t beat this road trip adventure!

The road climbs up three very steep high mountain passes: Red Mountain Pass (over 11,000 feet!), Molas Pass and Coal Bank Pass. Take your time and be prepared to stop often to photograph the endless views!

There are cool things to see and do along the Million Dollar Highway: ghost towns, hot springs, hike, fish and more!

8. Road to Hana, Hawai

The Road to Hana is the top attraction on the island of Maui, Hawaii. When taking this Hawaii scenic drive, remember it’s the journey, not the destination.

You’ll see vibrant green cliffs, stunning waterfalls, vast ocean views, colorful beaches with black, red and white sand, beautiful gardens and trails to explore.

Because this road is so popular, we recommend you start early – really early! When you start later in the morning, you’ll experience traffic and congestion which takes away from the beauty of the place.

You must do your research about this road trip before starting out to make sure it’s a drive you want to do. There are 620 curves, many one-lane narrow bridges, limited turnouts or parking, and it’s crowded. Pack your patience!

9. The Parks Highway, Alaska

The Parks Highway , also known as the George Parks Highway, runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks. It’s the most direct highway access to Denali National Park and Preserve from either city.

The entire route is 362 miles through Alaska’s untamed wilderness. Be on the lookout for wildlife like brown or black bear and maybe even moose!

During this road trip, if weather cooperates, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Denali mountain that stands at a staggering 20,310 feet!

10. Pacific Coast Highway, California

The Pacific Coast Highway is a road trip that runs along the Pacific Coast in California for 550 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

You can start in the south, but we recommend you start in the north so you’re in the lane closest to the ocean.

Plan about 3 days to make the most of this route and all the stops along the way: Monterey, Pebble Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Cambria, Morrow Bay, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Solvan, and Santa Barbara.

The Ultimate Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

From hiking in national parks to exploring charming towns, here's what to see and do on a road trip through Colorado.

best road trip in july

To experience the best of the U.S. via the great open road, look to Colorado. This picturesque state straddling the Rocky Mountains is home to some of the most astounding stretches of highway in the country, connecting mountain resorts and artists' colonies to pioneer towns. In short, it's the perfect place for the ultimate road trip. With that in mind, we've devised a route that hits plenty of spots that make the Centennial State so special.

Our itinerary takes you through three spectacular national parks: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes. While the last one doesn't require an admission fee, the first two do ($30 per car, including entry for all passengers, for one day or $35 per car for seven days of access). As of May 24, 2024, you must reserve a timed pass to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. If you're interested in purchasing an America the Beautiful annual pass, which gets you into all U.S. national parks and federal recreational lands, check each park's website below for more information about discounts for seniors, military members, and those with permanent disabilities.

Without further ado, here's our handy guide to everything you should do on a Colorado road trip.

Colorado's capital and biggest city is inevitably where any road trip should start. Not only is Denver home to the state's largest and busiest airport, and therefore where most travelers arrive, it also acts as a gateway from the plains in the east into the Rocky Mountains. There's plenty to do here before you start your journey: Grab some green chiles at El Taco de Mexico, explore historic Larimer Square, go to one of the city's great museums — the Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science are great places to start — and perhaps buy yourself a pair of cowboy boots. Whatever you do, make sure your last activity is getting in your car and driving northwest.

Denver's smaller, more free-spirited sibling Boulder is home to the University of Colorado's main campus, which means you can expect a whole lot of restaurants and businesses catering to college students. You'll also find some sublime hiking on and around the Flatirons , an iconic formation formed by dramatic, diagonally tilted slabs of rock.

Tanya Nikolic / Travel + Leisure

Your journey northwest continues to Estes Park, the first destination on this route wholly within the Rocky Mountains. This quaint town has become a popular tourist stop, due to its proximity to some of the region's best rock climbing and mountain trails. Estes Park is also considered the jumping-off point for much of Rocky Mountain National Park , where you can easily spend several days exploring backwoods trails, finding waterfalls, and spotting wildlife. This part of the itinerary is optional, but definitely encouraged if you have the time.

Trail Ridge Road

If you're road-tripping between May and October, you're in luck. The next portion of the route contains what is considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in America: Trail Ridge Road , a switchback-saturated stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that crosses over the Continental Divide and is closed during the fall and winter. In the spring and summer, you can pass through some of the region's highest mountains. Witness the sun glinting off glaciers as you weave through dramatic passes and drive along impossibly blue ponds until you reach Grand Lake. Refuel, then it's onto the next oasis.

Glenwood Springs

The aptly named Glenwood Springs is the hot spring capital of the area, with huge natural hot springs bubbling up from the earth. It's just what you want to see after a long drive from Grand Lake, and a particularly scenic remedy for driving-related cramps. The town is located right where the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers meet, in a valley cradled by steep mountain faces.

Telluride and Ouray

Gallo Images / Getty Images

Drive a few hours from Glenwood Springs and you'll enter gold rush territory. Sure, you can try panning in the Uncompahgre or San Miguel Rivers — it's a good way to cool off, but maybe not to get rich — though the real draw in Telluride and Ouray is the history. These little mountain villages are chock-full of relics from the area's Wild West days, from museums like the Ouray Alchemist Pharmacy Museum to mining tours in Telluride. They're also both tucked away in furtive, but gorgeous, canyons. You can hit Telluride, which is larger, more bustling, and artsier (it's also home to the Telluride Film Festival ), or Ouray, which is smaller and more rustic. Either way, we're venturing south.

Mesa Verde National Park

Continuing south, you'll trade the gold rush era for more ancient times at Mesa Verde National Park . These lands in Montezuma County were once inhabited by the cliff-dwelling ancestors of the Pueblo people, who constructed homes out of the sandstone from the cliffs and mesas on which they were built. The result is extraordinarily dramatic and incredibly enlightening. While there are hundreds of these sites throughout the park, the most impressive is Cliff Palace, pictured above, which lies in the shadow of a magnificent rock arch. Check out its elaborate rooms and the decorative plasters, all of which have withstood erosion and time.

Michael Snell / Robert Harding World Imagery / Getty Images

Beginning our turn east, Durango is the first major town on the map after leaving Mesa Verde. It's a great place to stop and rest for a while, combining the laid-back charm of small-town America with a rich history rooted in its importance as a railroad hub. It has also served as the backdrop in many Hollywood Western films , and you can visit several shooting locations from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Visuals Unlimited / Getty Images

Drive three hours down Route 160 and you'll arrive in a place that feels so otherworldly, you'll feel like you're on another planet. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve seems totally incongruous with the landscape around it, but that's what makes it so enticing — towering, ivory-colored dunes up to 750 feet tall are an echo of the nearby mountains. Camping here is the move, as the effect of the clear night sky over the dunes is a popular astronomical phenomenon that must be seen to be believed.

There's no better place in Colorado to witness the awe-inspiring force of water than Cañon City, so named for the steep cliffs carved by the Arkansas River. Whether you're looking for a gentle, comfortable sightseeing experience like the Royal Gorge Route Railroad or a more extreme method like rafting, you'll find it here, in addition to plenty of wineries and restaurants where you can luxuriate after feasting your eyes.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is the last stop on your vehicular journey, and it's a bit of a doozy. Not only is this the second-largest city in the state, it's also a stone's throw from two of Colorado's most impressive natural landmarks: Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods . The first can be easily ascended by car via Pikes Peak Highway, and the views from its 14,115-foot summit are truly magnificent — they actually inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write " America the Beautiful ." The second, Garden of the Gods, is a gorgeous public park that combines strikingly red rocks with lush forest scenery.

After indulging in your outdoor activity of choice, end your trip with green chiles at King's Chef Diner and bask in the success of a road trip well spent. If you're returning to Denver to fly home, it's just an hour's drive or so north to reach the airport.

Diving in Zanzibar's teal waters

Plan your travels in July with this guide to the best places to visit © Olesya Lesly / Shutterstock

It’s all about the heat come July, with the northern hemisphere’s sizzling summer temperatures adding an extra shine to some of the world’s most popular travel destinations.

Europe is bathed in sunshine, bringing the Mediterranean beach scene to the forefront, while in the tropics dry season signals prime wildlife spotting opportunities. Colder regions also benefit from the heat, with Arctic areas at their most accessible. Finally, there are the summer festivals and celebrations that bring fun and adventure to many destinations around the world.

Whatever your preference, here are our picks of where to go in July.

Where are the best places to travel to in July for relaxation?

People on a white-sand beach backed by straw huts

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Why now? Delve into Stone Town and the Indian Ocean under blue skies.

The spice island Unguja – known to most as Zanzibar – is a scent sensation. Stroll the maze-like alleys of old Stone Town on a warm evening, and you’ll catch whiffs of nutmeg, clove and cinnamon in the Darajani Market , frying seafood at stalls in Forodhani Gardens , and the aroma of black coffee in Jaws Corner, where old men gather to watch TV and gossip. Zanzibar’s historic heart, with its crumbling palaces and heartrending slavery-era relics, is just one gem of this treasure-trove island, at its best in July, in the middle of the dry season. Board a dhow to snorkel off the west coast, watching for dolphins; sniff the leaves and buds of a spice plantation; and find your own patch of coral-sand perfection on one of the wonderful beaches.

Snorkelers interact with a pod of Atlantic Spotted dolphin

Andros and Bimini, Bahamas

Why now? Alternate activity with indolence on and under the water.

The Bahamas are almost the Caribbean – yet, crucially, not quite. True, this speckle of islands and cays between Cuba and Florida boasts limpid waters and beautiful beaches. But summer here, though “rainy,” is less afflicted by the storms that often hit other islands. July brings calm, clear, warm seas, ideal for enjoying superb diving and snorkeling off tourist-light Andros; its east coast is protected by the world’s third-longest barrier reef. Hop across to Bimini for manta ray encounters (peaking in July, when sharks are less prevalent) and the chance to come face to smiling beak with an Atlantic spotted dolphin. Add mangroves, excellent fishing, thriving birdlife and white-powder beaches, but subtract crowds – Andros is even quieter and better value in July.

A kayaker viewed through a sea arch of red rock with some trees on top

Wisconsin, USA

Why now? Cool off with a great lake break.

In Wisconsin ’s warmest month, the shores of Lakes Michigan and Superior lure hordes of heat-fleeing urbanites. Unsurprisingly, the pretty waterfront villages and beaches of Door County , dubbed the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” bustle with vacationers, though there’s still peace to be found on Washington Island and in Newport State Park . For a real retreat, head northwest to the shore of Lake Superior – stopping en route to dip or fish in one of the glacial lakes peppering Vilas and Oneda Counties. Charming Bayfield, its streets lined with Victorian buildings, is likable enough in itself – but, more importantly, it’s the jumping-off point for the Apostle Islands, a mostly still-wild archipelago of 22 russet fringed emerald specks.

Where are the best places to travel to in July for wildlife and nature?

People in two canoes paddle down a river in a mountainous region

Northwest Territories, Canada

Why now? Run the river wild to immerse yourself in Indigenous culture.

This vast region of tundra and taiga is as empty as it is wild, with a population smaller than the tiniest Caribbean nation scattered across a land nearly as large as Mongolia. To discover the natural and cultural wonders of the Northwest Territories , take a river journey into its untamed heart, possible for just a few weeks from late June when temperatures are (relatively) balmy and days stretch forever. Canoe a stretch of Canada ’s longest river, the Deh Cho (Mackenzie); raft the South Nahanni from thundering, 96m-high (315ft)  Virginia Falls in the sky-piercing Mackenzie Mountains; or enjoy a gentle kayak on Great Slave Lake , North America ’s deepest. En route, learn about the traditional culture of the Dene peoples who have adapted to this challenging environment over tens of millennia, and watch for caribou, Dall sheep, black bear, moose and wood bison – the continent’s largest land mammal.

A river runs through a gorge with dramatic red-rock formations

Coral Coast, Western Australia

Why now? Meet charismatic sea creatures, roam red-rock canyons and wander among wildflowers.

Stretching over 1000km (621 miles) between Cervantes and Exmouth , the “Coral Coast” of Western Australia encapsulates much of the country’s appeal in miniature, making this relatively little-touristed stretch ideal for a winter road trip through empty expanses. Here, you’ll discover dramatic rock formations – the Pinnacles, limestone needles punching through the sand near Cervantes – and russet Tumblagooda Sandstone gorges in Kalbarri National Park. You’ll experience surfing and subaquatic adventures along the world’s largest fringing reef – 300km (186 miles) of coral that’s home to some 500 fish species. And you’ll meet miraculous wildlife, like when whale sharks gather in their hundreds on Ningaloo Reef (March to July), along with manta rays – more numerous off Exmouth May to September – and humpbacks arrive to join the fun, too.

Where are the best places to travel to in July for culture?

People are sat out on decking with drinks near a canal running through a town

Aarhus and Jutland, Denmark

Why now? Celebrate sunny days and balmy evenings in a cultural and culinary hotspot.

Denmark ’s second city is buzzier than a beehive. Founded by Vikings some 13 centuries ago, today Aarhus is eminently contemporary, with its groundbreaking ARoS art museum , rejuvenated waterfront cultural center, Dokk1 , and innovative Iceberg apartment blocks. Even the Moesgaard Museum , home of the 2000-year-old, bog-preserved Graubelle Man, offers a cutting-edge tour through the past. Come evening, the city reveals its true colors, with cafes, cocktail bars and clubs showcasing that quintessentially Danish blend of smiles and smarts. High summer brings a host of festivals celebrating flowers, jazz, Viking heritage and more, plus warm sun (nudging 20ºC/68ºF) for basking on sandy Baltic beaches: try Den Permanente near the center, silky-soft Bellevue just to the north, and the blissfully empty strands of eco island Samsø, just a short ferry ride away.

An ornate doorway in a temple complex with colorful patterns surrounding the frame

Gansu, China

Why now? Absorb Silk Road history and Tibetan culture.

While lowland regions of China swelter in summer heat, summer is the time to explore the high Tibetan plateau, when temperatures are pleasant and trails are free of snow. Cupping the northeastern arc of the plateau, Gansu province is popular with domestic tourists, renowned as the gateway of the ancient Silk Road and the home of jaw-dropping grottoes, notably at Mogao near Dunhuang . But away from those hot spots, you’ll find peace, along with rich Tibetan culture and wild landscapes, particularly in Gannan prefecture south of provincial capital Lanzhou . Here, the chants of lamas waft across Xiahe from Labrang Monastery – one of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism; walk the 3.5km (2-mile) kora (pilgrimage circuit) around reputedly the world’s longest stretch of prayer wheels, before refueling on momo  (Tibetan steamed dumplings).

Where are the best places to travel to in July for food and drink?

A hand holds a small bunch of red-black berries still attached to a tree

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Why now? For tasty times on the prairie.

Peak summer typically means peak crowds – but on Canada’s endless prairie, it’s not hard to lose the hordes. Landlocked Saskatchewan is a landscape of space and silence – indeed, an audio-ecologist deemed its Grasslands National Park one of the world’s quietest places. It’s also a great place to eat and drink. The province is the breadbasket of Canada, encompassing 50% of its arable farmland, not to mention a heap of extremely photogenic grain silos. Super-cool Saskatoon , which sits amid all this fertility, has become one of the country’s hottest foodie spots. A raft of distillers, craft brewers, artisan bakers and cocktail shakers have popped up in the small-but-mighty “Paris of the Prairies.” Take a foodie tour and cooking class, and visit nearby farms to meet producers. July also sees the sweet, nutty Saskatoon berries ripen – try them in everything from pies to wine.

A plate of cheeses with some charcuterie meats on a table next to a beer

Alta Badia, Italy

Why now? Sample superb cuisine amid marvelous mountains.

If the Dolomites are the Alps at their most magnificent, the Alta Badia valley in South Tyrol  promises the Dolomites at their tastiest. This jagged array of deep valleys, high plateaus and piercing pinnacles in northern Italy echoes with poignant history: between 1915 and 1918, Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces fought amid these unforgiving peaks, and today you can hike routes such as the Kaiserjäger to discover their trenches and gun emplacements. Alta Badia is renowned for its skiing, but in summer, the cable cars and mountain huts reopen to serve hungry hikers, cyclists, paragliders and trail runners instead. The region is spangled with Michelin stars, but even simple refuges dish up good-value but top-notch cuisine (think mountain cheeses, pasta and strudels).

Where are the best places to travel to in July for adventure?

Hikers cross a wooden suspension bridge in a jungle environment

Why now? Wake up and smell the coffee in a mini dry season.

Caribbean beaches, mountains, plains, jungle, desert: Colombia encompasses an astonishingly diverse array of landscapes, with correspondingly varied climates. July and August bring a period of drier weather perfect for touring fincas (coffee farms) amid the beautiful, rolling hills of the Zona Cafetera ; admiring dazzling birdlife in Reserva Ecologica Rio Blanco; sleeping beneath the stars among the cacti and otherworldly rock formations of the Tatacoa Desert ; hiking the lush highlands around Popoyán ; and discovering the pre-Columbian tombs, petroglyphs and huge carved heads around San Agustín and Tierradentro. Also visiting this month are giants: between June and November, humpbacks calve off Colombia’s Pacific coast – join a whale-watching tour in Nuquí or from Buenaventura into Bahía Málaga to spot breaching behemoths. It’s also the driest month to spy sloths and pink river dolphins in Colombia’s slice of the Amazon.

A mountain road weaves around bends and up and down hills

Khardung La, India

Why now? Snowless roads for a magnificent drive.

There are breathtaking road trips – and there are literally breathtaking road trips. The Khardung La is both. This 5600m (18,373ft) pass near Leh , amid the Indian Himalaya, was a key thoroughfare on the Silk Road and is now one of the world’s highest drivable highways. Crossing it by bus is an adventure; crossing it astride a classic Enfield Bullet motorbike even more so. Either way, both mountain views and soaring altitudes will leave you gasping. The roads here are only open for a few months a year, so make the most of the warm, snow-free conditions. Bikers could zigzag up from Manali ( Himachal Pradesh ) to Leh ( Ladakh ) – one of the world’s best mountain rides. Or fly from Delhi to Leh to visit the town’s Tibetan-style palace and stupas before taking the Khardung La into the isolated Nubra Valley .

  • When To Go: During the months of April, May, August, September, and October
  • Bucket List Stop: Pepe'ekeo Scenic Drive is at the start of Highway 19, just north of Hilo

Seattle To Fairbanks North American Drive

It wouldn't be a bucket list trip if it didn't have a unique route, and the drive from seattle to washington and fairbanks, alaska, also brings travelers through canada.

This suggested road trip from Seattle in Washington to Fairbanks in Alaska is the only American road trip to also pass through Canada. This is a mammoth 2,150-mile road trip passing through some of the remotest landscapes of North America (including British Columbia and the Yukon Territory). Alternatively, to keep it an all-American 'road trip', consider taking the Alaska Marine Highway - a ferry network that is part of the American highway system that bypasses Canada.

  • Length: 2,150 miles
  • When To Go: During summer months, preferably early June and July
  • Bucket List Stop: While Fairbanks is the ultimate bucket list stop, saving some time to explore Canada can also add a unique aspect to this road trip

5 reasons why Flagstaff is the best road trip in Arizona

Portrait of Michael Salerno

Suggested alternate main hed for curiosity gap: 5 reasons why this northern Arizona city is the best road trip in Arizona

Flagstaff is sometimes called the City in the Pines for its ponderosa pine forests. It's also called the City of Seven Wonders, for its proximity to the Grand Canyon, Coconino National Forest, Oak Creek Canyon, the San Francisco Peaks and three national monuments.

In July, The Arizona Republic readers bestowed another nickname on Flagstaff: Ultimate Arizona road trip destination .

Flagstaff, the winner of the azcentral.com 2024 Arizona road trip bracket, has charmed visitors for generations for its mountain scenery and sense of nostalgia that draws people to its historic downtown and Route 66. The city also draws heat-weary Phoenix residents every summer who want to spend time outdoors in a cooler climate.

Ryan Randazzo, spokesman for Flagstaff's tourism promoter Discover Flagstaff (and a former Republic reporter), discussed what makes Flagstaff stand out to visitors to explain why readers selected it as the winner of our Arizona Road Trip Bracket.

Dig in: 5 new must-try Flagstaff restaurants changing the scene

What is the hottest it gets in Flagstaff?

In Phoenix, triple-digit temperatures are the norm five months a year.

Not in Flagstaff, though. While it can get hot in summer, temperatures never reached above 97 degrees − the peak temperature was observed on July 5, 1973 − in the last 100 years of record keeping, according to the National Weather Service Flagstaff .

The cooler climate is a selling point for metro Phoenix residents who plan summer getaways to Flagstaff, Randazzo said. It also helps that there's a lot to do in the city.

“It’s hot down in the desert in Arizona and it’s about 25 degrees cooler here, but there’s lots to do in that cool weather," he said.

People who travel with their pets will find it's a good place to get their dogs out of the heat, too, as Flagstaff is a dog-friendly destination, Randazzo said.

"It comes down to the diversity of activities when you get to Flagstaff," he said. "There’s things for people who are history buffs, for people who are into Route 66 nostalgia, for people who like to get outside and get in the woods."

Things to do in Coconino National Forest

Outdoor enthusiasts head to Flagstaff not just for more comfortable summer weather, but because there's no shortage of spectacular natural beauty.

With its location south of the San Francisco Peaks and on the edge of the Coconino National Forest, Flagstaff is close to the highest point in Arizona, Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), and in the middle of the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world, Randazzo said.

There's plenty to do in these scenic locales, too. Skiing and snowboarding on Humphreys Peak are offered at the Arizona Snowbowl ski resort, and Coconino National Forest has countless trails for hiking, cycling and horseback riding.

Why is Flagstaff called a dark city?

But Flagstaff's natural beauty isn't limited to what you can see in daylight.

Since a 1958 lighting ordinance limiting the use of searchlights, which scientists at Lowell Observatory advocated for to protect the site of a newly relocated research telescope from light pollution, Flagstaff has received acclaim for its efforts to preserve the night sky. The International Dark Sky Association recognized Flagstaff as an International Dark Sky City in 2001.

Many places around town are popular with stargazers. Lowell Observatory, famous as the spot where Pluto was discovered, and the three Flagstaff-area national monuments − Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki and Walnut Canyon − are often cited as among the best spots.

"On a clear night you can see the Milky Way from downtown, which is a rare thing for any city," Randazzo said.

Lowell Observatory is seeing more visitors because of greater attention to the city's night sky viewing opportunities, and it's working to accommodate the growth with a new attraction, Randazzo said. The Astronomy Discovery Center, will include a multistory LED theater called the Lowell Universe Theater, hands-on activities including the Orbits Curiosity Zone and an open sky planetarium.

The Astronomy Discovery Center is scheduled to open Nov. 16, according to Lowell Observatory's website .

What is the trail system in Flagstaff?

There's no shortage of outdoor activities in Flagstaff, and many of them − hiking and cycling, to name a few − can be experienced using a network of trails that connects most of the city.

The Flagstaff Urban Trail System , or FUTS (pronounced "foots," according to Flagstaff officials), is a 56-mile network with plans for about 75 more miles, connecting the city through shared-use pathways that cross through city and natural spaces.

"It allows people to enjoy the outdoors and that good weather," Randazzo said.

Flagstaff Route 66 things to do

History buffs appreciate the nostalgia of historic Route 66 and the downtown buildings, which include the Weatherford and Monte Vista hotels that date to the early 20th century.

Today, downtown Flagstaff is a vibrant city center, helped by an evolving food scene and summer festivals such as Art in the Park, the Flagstaff Chili Festival, the Mother Road Classic and the Hopi Arts and Culture Festival, Randazzo said.
