Ayers House Museum

Ayers House is the last of the grand mansions of Adelaide's North Terrace boulevard.

Sunday 26 September sees us close the doors on 50 successful years of the Ayers House Museum.

We do this with heavy hearts but intend to finish our 50 years at the museum with as many of our family and friends as possible. Come and visit us one last time this weekend to create some new memories & relive some old ones. Due to Covid restrictions we ask that you guarantee your entry by booking at  https://www.trybooking.com/BTJQK

Ayers House is named after its original owner Sir Henry Ayers, distinguished politician, financier and Premier of South Australia, who lived in the house with his family during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Originally it was known simply as 288 North Terrace. Constructed of local bluestone, the design of the house is attributed to Sir George Strickland Kingston, architect of the colony and the man responsible for the design of many a grand mansion and public building. The museum began its life as a small nine-bedroom brick cottage built by William Paxton – a chemist and early Adelaide entrepreneur. Henry Ayers expanded the house in several stages with the final stage completed around 1870. Ayers House today stands as a prime example of colonial architecture and that’s before you even step inside. The interior contains many important decorative features including the ornate painted finishes and examples of trompe l’oeil on the walls and ceilings of all rooms. The State Dining Room offers visitors a moment to reflect on the life of a prominent man and to imagine the splendour of dining in such an ornate setting. Invited dignitaries would certainly have felt themselves a distinguished guest.

Visitors can explore the museum and learn about the social history of the period and life for Ayers House occupants both “above and below” stairs.

The museum is easily reached either on foot, bus or tram. Tram stop –  Botanic Gardens. Ayers House also has an on-site car park for those traveling by car. Parking ticket purchase is required.

Ayers House is Adelaide’s finest Victorian-era home, and one of the last remaining grand 19th century residences that once lined the North Terrace cultural boulevard.

After Henry’s death the property was sold, its house and grounds becoming a ‘pleasure resort’ known as Austral Gardens with an open-air theatre and the Palais de Danse. The First World War and its aftermath saw the house serve as a club for the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League, before the South Australian Government acquired it in 1926 for use by the Royal Adelaide Hospital as a nurses’ residence and training school.

The National Trust of South Australia has managed the museum and maintained public access to the house since 1973. During that time the rooms have been refurnished and major conservation work has been undertaken to preserve the house and its superb, hand-painted decoration.

Come down and enjoy this unique landmark in the heart of Adelaide’s East End, and take part in our exciting program of events, exhibitions and family-friendly programming.

Henry Ayers: the Man Who Became a Rock

Cover Henry Ayers: the Man Who Became a Rock

'The most wonderful natural feature I have ever seen.' With these words the explorer William Gosse expressed the awe he and many others have felt at the natural phenomenon of Uluru. The first white person to reach the central Australian monolith, he gave it the name 'Ayers Rock'. But who was Henry Ayers, the man whose name is forever associated with Australia's most recognisable natural icon? And why should he still be remembered today? Although the rock now carries its ancient indigenous name, Uluru, the name of Ayers is still linked with the the Rock's 'discovery' in 1873. Indeed, 'Ayers Rock' is one of the most famous natural wonders on earth and, despite its remote location, attracts over 400,000 visitors each year. This book, the first biography of Henry Ayers, focuses attention on the complex character behind the name and examines all aspects of his life - from his humble origins in the naval city of Portsmouth in southern England, his migration to Australia and his career as a m

iner, businessman and eventually as Premier of South Australia - a post to which he was elected seven times. It provides a fascinating insight into Australian history through the life of a man who was consistently in the upper echelons of influence and authority in colonial society and whose legacy lives through his association with the most famous and recognisable natural feature of his adopted country.

Ayers House Museum - The National Trust of South Australia

Ayers House Museum is the former home of nineteenth century businessman, entrepreneur and seven times Premier of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers.

The Front Hallway

Built over a twenty year period from 1855, Ayers House is today the last remaining grand mansion of North Terrace and a prime example of colonial architecture. Of major interest are the ornate, hand-painted finishes on the walls and ceilings of all rooms, the large reception rooms designed for entertaining and the external symmetry of the house with its two matching bow windows.

The National Trust is responsible for managing this historic property and has brought together a superb collection of Victorian furniture, decorative arts and artwork to recreate a visual display of nineteenth century colonial life, both "above and below" stairs.

Ayers House Museum contains an extensive collection of nineteenth cenutry furniture, decorative arts, silver and artwork. It also houses a nationally significant costume collection primarly dating from the nineteeth century but also including some examples of Edwardian and 1920s costume.

Ayers House Museum featuring a house, interior views and heritage elements

I only need accommodation for part of my trip

Visit Ayers House Museum

Ayers House Museum is an iconic Adelaide mansion built in the 1850s. Sir Henry Ayers, the five-time Premier of South Australia, lived in this mansion on North Terrace for 42 years. The house is rich with history, and since Ayers’ death it’s had a number of purposes. It was a dance hall, an open-air café and a nurses’ training centre. Today, the Ayers House Museum is dedicated to the history of the residence and its inhabitants and is owned by the National Trust of Australia, an organisation that conserves heritage places and objects.Explore the posh surroundings and gain insight of the life of not just the Ayers, but also the people of Adelaide in the 19th century. The house was meticulously restored by the National Trust. It features original silverware, furnishings and a 300 kilogram (660-pound) chandelier, all originally owned by the Ayers family. The building itself is famous for its painted ceilings. Look up as you stroll through the museum, as each room features hand stenciling. Upon entering the formal dining room, you’ll see one of the most significant painted ceilings in all of Australia. The ongoing care of the National Trust ensures that all of the ceilings remain in prime condition. Take the guided tour to get an authentic experience of the times and customs of 19th-century Adelaide. Tours can be coupled with morning or afternoon tea. During the About Time History Festival every May, a costumed butler, housekeeper and cook give after-dark tours by candlelight. The actors wear full period attire, and this is a great way to see the house.Ayers House Museum is located within the North Terrace cultural precinct, just a short walk from the CBD. A free City Loop bus stops close to the museum, as well as other attractions in central Adelaide. On-site parking is available for a fee. The museum is open daily except Monday, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Fodor's Expert Review Ayers House

Between 1855 and 1897 this sprawling colonial structure was the home of Sir Henry Ayers, South Australia's premier and the man for whom Uluru was originally named Ayers Rock. Most rooms—including the unusual Summer Sitting Room, in the cool of the basement—have been restored with period furnishings and the state's best examples of 19th-century costumes and lifestyle. Entrance is free on weekends and volunteers lead guided tours when they're available.

Husband arrested after missing woman’s body found at previous residence, officials say

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. ( WDBJ /Gray News) - After a monthslong investigation in the disappearance of a Virginia woman, authorities said an arrest has been made.

According to Amherst County Sheriff Jimmy Ayers, justice still needs to be served for Elsie Wiggington after the search didn’t end the way anyone had hoped.

Remains located at a property in Amherst, Virginia, on Wednesday were identified as Elsie Wiggington, who was reported to have been last seen in June 2023.

The grandmother’s family told WDBJ that she would never have willingly left her children behind. However, family members were the only ones searching until earlier this year, when Ayers, who was not in office when Elsie Wiggington disappeared, decided to look into the case.

“Since we started our investigation of this case, obviously, that has been the No. 1 priority to determine what the fate of Elsie was,” Ayers said.

The search began with a series of questions.

Ayers said officials were working to determine if Wiggington was still alive or possibly still out in the world, having taken on a new life somewhere. Or maybe something had been done to her.

Ayers said it became a mission he vowed to see through.

“In my heart, I felt that what was going to happen happened yesterday from Day 1, but there was still a faint hope that something would turn up that would change that direction,” he said. “But unfortunately, it did not.”

After searching last month, Ayers said authorities decided to do another check on Elsie Wiggington’s previous residence. This is where they found what is believed to be her remains.

Officials then arrested her husband, Frederick Wiggington, who was not living on the property at that time.

“It’s got to be evil in an individual to do something to another human being, whatever that may be,” Ayers said. “To extinguish a vibrant life like that is just evil.”

Elsie Wiggington’s cause of death has not yet been released.

Although Ayers is almost certain on the fate of Elsie Wiggington, he said the fight is far from over.

“The last day of this will be when we have the conviction that we’re looking for and hold the individual accountable that has done this,” he said.

Ayers said he expects additional charges against Frederick Wiggington to follow.

He said when the case goes to court, he’s determined to sit in and watch justice be served to the person who hurt Elsie Wiggington.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family.
