Being an AARP member has its perks, including discounts on car rentals. Car rentals, particularly during peak seasons, can be expensive but discounts can make them much more affordable. AARP has member discounts with several major car rental companies and other online car rental sites. Below, we’ll cover AARP’s best rental car discounts and how to cash in.

AARP members can save on rental cars from several major companies

  • Do AARP Members Get Discounts on Car Rentals?

To get you where you want to be on your travel adventures you may need to rent a car. And, AARP can help you out with the costs of car rentals with some great discounts.

AARP members can save up to 35 percent off base rates when they choose the Pay Now option during reservation. If you choose “Pay Later,” you can get 30 percent off at the pickup counter. You will also get a 3 percent credit that can be applied to future rentals, a free upgrade on compact through full-size car class bookings based on availability, and can add another driver free. Customers can book their reservations online or by phone through Budget.

FYI: The bigger and more powerful the car, the more likely the rental cost will be higher (and the bigger the gas guzzler). You can also save more by picking up your car from an airport nearby.

Budget Truck Rental

If you happen to be downsizing and planning a move , you can rent a Budget truck and save 20 percent on local or one-way truck rentals, Sunday through Thursday, and 10 percent on Friday and Saturday. Discounts are off time and mileage of “The Best Available Rate” for rentals. Promotions cannot be combined with other discounts or offers and prices may vary depending on time of year.

You will also get a $10-per-day Physical Damage Waiver. You can book online or over the phone. Customers must mention the account #56000058459 at the time of reservation to receive the discount. Here are some of the features you will get as an AARP member:

  • Truck sizes up to 26 feet
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Boxes and moving supplies*
  • Towing equipment*

*Some items may have additional charges.

When AARP members choose the Pay Now option at Avis, they can save up to 35 percent off base rates at reservation. Or if they choose “Pay Later,” AARP members can save up to 30 percent at the pickup counter. Members also get a 3 percent credit on future rentals, a free upgrade on compact through full-size car class bookings based on availability, and can add a driver for free. Reservations can be made online or over the phone.

Did You Know? Many seniors are still on the road. Check out our guide to senior driving statistics to learn more.

At Payless, AARP members can save 5 percent on leisure daily, weekly, weekend, and monthly base rates. And, members get a free upgrade on bookings of compact through full-size car class. Customers can book online or via phone.

AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia

AARP members can use the Travel Center search engine to compare all rental cars at the same time, such as Avis, Budget, and Payless. You can compare car types and pick-up or drop-off locations. Customers can look for the red “AARP Member Exclusive“ badge to ensure they are getting an AARP car rental discount.

FYI: If you are planning a road trip, you can stack your benefits with a vacation package or receive 10 percent off select roadside stays.

AARP does not have specific discounts at Hertz, Dollar, National, Alamo, EZ Rent a Car, or Thrifty but you can still search for cars on the search engine and save at these car rental companies by booking through AARP Travel Center.

There are several options for personal transportation for seniors . If you prefer car sharing, then Zipcar may be what you’re looking for. Zipcar is a round-trip car-sharing network that provides access to rideshare by demand for more than one million Zipcar members. Customers have a choice of more than 60 different makes and models, such as hybrids, SUVs, luxury cars, and cargo vans.

AARP members get $20 off an annual Zipcar membership. If this is your first time using Zipcar you can get a $40 free driving credit. Your promo code is automatically applied during sign-up or you can mention your AARP membership if calling by phone, dial 1-866-494-7227.

Zipcar has a mobile app for iPhone and Android for members to locate the closest car, reserve it, unlock and lock it, and report its state. With Zipcar you don’t need to own a car. Plus, gas, insurance, maintenance, 180 miles (or 200 km) a day, and a parking spot just for you are all included.

Need to rent a car on your next vacation? AARP members save on car rentals from popular companies such as Budget, Avis, and Payless. Or why not rent from the car-sharing platform Zipcar? No matter which car rental company you choose, you’ll save anywhere from 5 percent to 35 percent just by being an AARP member.

On this page, we lay out each and every one of AARP’s car rental discounts, whether you’re a current member looking for ways to save or considering an AARP membership.

FYI: No AARP membership? Check out our full list of senior discounts .

AARP Car Rental Discounts

The chart below gives a general overview of all of AARP’s car rental discounts. Most of the companies provide 5 percent to 35 percent off base rates, but Zipcar offers annual or monthly memberships.

Expedia AARP Discount

You can save up to 30 percent on select car rentals by booking your rental car through the AARP Travel Center, which is powered by Expedia. Through the platform, you could save up to 30 percent on base rates at Budget or Avis rental cars or 5 percent at Payless Car Rental. You also will be able to get free upgrades, insurance, and an additional driver for free by either calling 1-800-675-4318 or booking online on the AARP Travel Center website.

Avis AARP Discount

You can access the AARP Avis discount either through the AARP Travel Center line, or by dealing with Avis directly by calling 1-800-331-1800 or going on the Avis website . By booking through Avis instead of AARP, you’ll save up to 35 percent on base rates if you pay for your reservation up front or up to 30 percent if you pay at the pickup counter. AARP members also receive:

  • A free upgrade on compact to full-size car bookings, if they’re available
  • A free additional driver
  • 3 percent credit on future rentals

Budget AARP Discount

You can book your Budget car rental through AARP or through Budget directly by visiting the Budget website or calling 1-800-733-9092. The benefits are the same as car rentals booked through Avis: 30 percent or 35 percent off base rates, depending on if you pay up front or at the pickup counter, plus free upgrades, a free additional driver, and a 3 percent credit on future car rentals.

Budget Truck Rental AARP Discount

Book a truck from Budget Truck Rental, which is separate from Budget, and save 10 percent to 20 percent on local or one-way truck rentals Sundays through Thursday or 10 percent on weekends. You’ll also receive a physical damage waiver for only $10 per day. To save, either call 1-866-470-7374 or go to the Budget Truck Rental website .

Payless Car Rental AARP Discount

The Payless Car Rental discount is not as high as the others on this list — only 5 percent off leisure weekly, daily, weekend, and monthly base rates. You’ll also receive an upgrade on compact through full-size bookings by calling 1-800-729-5377 or going on the Payless Car Rental website .

Zipcar AARP Discount

Zipcar works a bit differently than most car rental companies. Rather than visiting a parking lot with an office and picking up your car from an attendant, you’ll simply book a car that’s parked in your area and open it with the Zipcar app. That beats the hassle of the rental car counter, and when you’re done, you just park the car in the same general area.

Instead of booking individual car rentals, Zipcar is membership-based, on either a monthly or annual basis. Rates differ based on your location and the length of your membership, but your AARP membership will save you $20 on an annual membership. New Zipcar drivers will also get $40 in free driving credit. To get the offer, call Zipcar at 1-866-494-7227 or buy a membership on the Zipcar website .

Is an AARP Membership Worth It?

From May 2023 to May 2024, the cost of car and truck rental in the U.S. has decreased by nearly 8 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . That’s good news, but the base rates of rental cars are still around $50 to $80 per day . You’ll still want to save money on rental cars, and AARP’s car rental discounts are generous and flexible.

An AARP membership costs $12 for the first year, but it could save you up to 35 percent on rental cars. Even if you’re just renting a rental car for a day for $50, you could still save $17.50, which means the membership would pay for itself in a day. That’s not to mention the other AARP discounts on hotels, restaurants, travel, flights, and cruises — basically all the elements of a great vacation. No matter how you slice it, AARP’s affordable membership makes financial sense and can save you money on things you’d buy anyway.

For further discounts, you can see how much you can save on flights with AARP , which is one of the most significant travel expenses. We’ve also compiled a list of AARP discounts on cruises .

How to use your AARP discount on travel

Fran Golden

When AARP — the 38-million-strong organization for people over 50 — starts contacting you about becoming a member, you may freak out. My first reaction was, "I am not that old."

But after I got over my initial consternation, I realized that becoming an AARP member might open up a treasure trove of travel savings for me, including some that are always available and others that come and go periodically.

And it's a small investment: Either pay $12 a year for a multiyear membership with automatic renewal or $16 if you rejoin annually.

"One of the strengths of the AARP program is it's always on and always available," said Matthew Phillips, director of travel for the membership organization. "Another strength is there's the AARP discount and AARP member rate, and you also get those awards points with the programs you are enrolled in."

Members have access to discounts and member-specific deals at more than 10 hotel chains and their brands. There are also exclusive AARP deals for Avis Budget Group car rentals and through a cobranded AARP Travel Center powered by the Expedia portal.

Here are all the ways that you can use AARP discounts on travel, including a few you might not know about.

AARP travel deals

Hotel stays.

aarp travel discounts car rental

Hotel savings for AARP members are between 5% and 10% off the best available rate. Some hotels offer additional perks, too, such as a late checkout at 2 p.m., when available. The ongoing travel discounts are clearly spelled out on the AARP travel benefits website .

Members can click through to the AARP Expedia booking portal or link directly to the booking sites of select providers.

With an AARP membership, you can score discounts for brands in the portfolios of companies such as Hilton and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts . Wyndham, for example, offers up to 10% off, plus a late checkout when available. When you click on the AARP rate during the booking process, you should be able to see the terms, conditions and benefits.

The savings are 5% or more off stays at Best Western Hotels & Resorts and up to 10% off Choice Hotels , whether booked through the AARP Expedia portal or directly with the brands. AARP members also save 10% on stays with budget brands Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn.

At some point during the booking process, you may be asked for your AARP membership number. In some cases, you will need to show your membership card at check-in at the hotel.

Airline tickets

This may come as a surprise, but AARP has a long-standing relationship with British Airways .

The deal is for $65 off World Traveller (standard economy) and World Traveller Plus (premium economy) fares, as well as $200 off Club World (business class) fares. The discount does not apply to basic economy fares.

The savings offer applies to round-trip transatlantic tickets purchased online. Connections to more than 130 destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa are available.

With the offer, you can collect British Airways Executive Club Avios based on the fare booked.

Car rentals

AARP's car rental partnership with Avis and Budget gives members discounts of up to 30% on base-rate rentals when you pay in advance. Other perks from the Avis and Budget brands include an upgrade on a booking for a compact through full-size car, based on availability, and you can add an additional driver at no cost. There's also a 5%-off deal on Payless rentals.

As with hotels, you may need to show your membership card at the car rental counter.

Other AARP deals

Through the Expedia portal, AARP members booking cruises have access to whatever sale fares are being offered, plus an onboard spending credit of up to $100 you can use for drinks, massages or other purchases on the ship, according to Phillips. Featured cruise companies include Princess Cruises and Holland America Line .

AARP members booking vacation packages with flights and hotels or rental cars on the Expedia portal receive the bonus of a $50 prepaid Visa card.

Three escorted and guided tour companies — Collette, Grand European Travel and Vacations By Rail — also offer discounts to AARP members.

Additionally, there's a discount on airport parking — 12% with ParkRideFly — available at nearly 40 airports throughout the U.S. Popular locations include New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Midway International Airport (MDW).

Exclusive AARP offers

In addition to the anytime deals, there are other targeted sales of travel products. For example, if a car rental company is having a sale open to the general public on SUVs, there may be an added offer exclusive to AARP members.

Plus, AARP members receive the organization's magazine and printed bulletin, both of which include some travel content, and can sign up for various newsletters like "Hot Deals," which has limited-time offers in a number of areas, such as dining and insurance products — and sometimes travel.

How to become an AARP member

While AARP is focused on people over 50, there is no minimum age to join. Anyone of any age can take advantage of the travel offers and the discounts on a lot of other products.

AARP provides access to 200-plus benefits, according to the company. While most are available to any member, products that are age-restricted by vendors, such as certain insurance products, are only available to members who are at least 50 years old.

A catch for anyone younger than 50 is that everything AARP does is geared and heavily marketed toward those age 50 and up. As such, you'll get pitches that may be irrelevant to your age group.

If you decide to enroll, it's fast and easy to sign up on the AARP website .

Bottom line

aarp travel discounts car rental

Is an AARP membership worth It?

The low cost of joining AARP makes it a good bet for all ages, even if you only take advantage of the travel discounts. You'll get an immediate return on your $16 membership investment with just one car rental or hotel stay.

In addition to multiple travel benefits, including hotel, car rental and airline discounts, you can take advantage of dining discounts at over a half-dozen brands — why not save 10% off your oysters, steak and truffle fries at McCormick & Schmick's?

Ultimately, for a small annual investment, your wallet will thank you.

6 Red Flags That Will Help You Spot A Travel Scam

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

Technological advances have allowed scammers to effectively target travelers.

Travel is a great way to take a break from the demands of work and everyday life and recharge for a bit while exploring a new place. Unfortunately, people who decide to go on that much-deserved vacation often find themselves the targets of a sophisticated scam .

“The business of fraud has been ‘democratized,’ and travel scams have become one of the most common ways that scammers defraud consumers and businesses,” Brittany Allen , a trust and safety architect at Sift, told HuffPost. “Easy-to-access and use technologies, along with the information available on the dark web, have lowered the barrier to entry for fraud, and these cybercriminals are taking advantage.”

She noted that Sift’s Fraud Industry Benchmarking Resource found that payment fraud in the online travel and lodging industry doubled from the third quarter of 2023 to the second quarter of 2024.

“Travel scams have always been around, but with the ‘revenge travel’ after COVID, we certainly saw an increase in the ways criminals were using people’s desires to travel to steal from them,” said Amy Nofziger , the director of victim support at the AARP Fraud Watch Network. “Plus we are all on our phones 24/7 so scammers trying to steal from us have access to us more than ever. We have seen travel scams come in via text message, email and on social media.”

That’s why it’s important to be extra vigilant as you book travel arrangements and go about your trip. To help vacationers avoid scams, we asked experts to share the red flags they should watch out for.

The situation or offer seems too good to be true.

“The biggest tip-off about online or email scams is that if it’s too good to be true, it’s likely a scam,” explained Ned S. Levi , a columnist and travel scam expert with Travelers United. “That’s a well-known, long touted scam tip-off, but it still is true.”

In this age of skyrocketing travel costs , scammers try to entice unsuspecting vacationers with low offers well below market price. But remember that these “exclusive” deals are often too unrealistic to be credible.

The same goes for in-person fraud. Don’t let the lure of a low-cost car ride from the airport lead you into a bad situation with a scam driver .

“Never get in an unlicensed taxi or private vehicle other than one ordered via reputable ride sharing apps ― no matter how amazing the deal is!” warned Julian Moro , senior vice president and regional security director at International SOS.

Even when a transaction isn’t explicitly involved, bring a healthy dose of skepticism to your interactions as a tourist.

“A very, very attractive person comes up to you out of the blue at the bar? Maybe it’s your lucky day, or maybe they work with the bar and will run up your bill,” said travel writer Matthew Kepnes , aka Nomadic Matt. “Someone incredibly friendly has a relative from the exact same city you’re from and wants to buy you lunch? It’s possible. Or maybe they will duck out and leave you with the bill. That doesn’t mean you should avoid friendly people and constantly keep your guard up, but rather that you should always use common sense.”

The payment method seems suspect.

“Listen for the way they’re asking to be paid,” Nofziger advised. “If they are requesting a pre-paid gift card, payment by cryptocurrency or via a peer to peer app, then it’s most likely a scam.”

Wire transfers or checks shouldn’t be necessary for basic travel bookings either. Stick to secure payment methods through official channels. It might be normal to encounter a street food vendor who doesn’t accept credit cards during your trip, but you should be wary of a hotel or flight booking service that doesn’t allow credit card payments.

“Book everything with a credit card,” said Ally Armeson , executive director of programs at the Cybercrime Support Network. “Credit cards offer more fraud protection than a debit card. Even if your credit card details end up in the wrong hands, you can contact the credit card company’s fraud department to resolve the issue.”

Be sure to regularly review your bank statements throughout your travels (and in general) so that you can catch any irregular activity if your card information was somehow compromised in a scam. Take care with your money when going to unfamiliar places.

“Use credit cards and travelers checks where possible and try not to carry too much spare cash, especially when going to remote locations that you are unfamiliar with,” Moro added.

Something about the website feels off.

“Watch out for suspicious URLs ― website addresses that look slightly off or contain unusual characters, such as inconsistencies between the URL and site descriptions, grammatical errors, or using characters in place of letters, such as a zero for an ‘o,’” Allen said.

She noted that this kind of vigilance is especially important when you discover a website through an ad on social media or another website, as this kind of marketing is not thoroughly vetted in advance. If you want to book that hotel room, flight or rental car deal you saw, try to go to the vendor’s actual website to confirm it’s legit.

“Be very careful when doing online searches,” Nofziger said. “Criminals can engineer their website to be at the top of the search results to get your attention. Additionally, when needing to connect with customer service, go directly to the website and look for the ‘Contact Us’ page. Many scammers will place fake customer service phone numbers online.”

Look out for unexpected spelling and grammar mistakes and poor image quality or design before sharing sensitive information online.

“One of the best lines of defense against scams and threats while traveling is your instinct,” Moro said. “If you feel something is off about a website, a situation or in general, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Most of the time, your instinct is right.”

Communication takes place through unofficial channels.

“Never trust unsolicited communication of any kind,” Armeson urged. “Even if the message seems real, don’t click on anything or download anything until you are certain it is legitimate. Do your own independent research using official websites and phone numbers ― don’t use websites or numbers provided in unsolicited messages.”

Make sure you’re communicating with travel vendors through their official phone number, app or email address.

“You always want to go through a well-known travel company, and if online, you want to go through their website directly, not through a search link and absolutely not through an email link,” Levi said.

If you’re booking a vacation rental through a service like AirBnb or Vrbo, be wary of hosts who push you to take your conversation off the platform to an external messaging app or text. Keep communication on the system where it can be monitored.

You’re pressured to buy quickly ...

If a sales pitch turns aggressive, that might be a red flag to back away from an enticing travel opportunity.

“Do not allow FOMO get a hold of your emotions,” Nofziger said. “Take your time to think about the offer or what the offer is. For more big purchases like this, any legitimate company will not put pressure on you to buy.”

It’s worth taking time to gather all the information you need to ensure the provider is credible.

“Do your research, make sure to vet the travel company or opportunity prior to giving them money,” Nofziger said. “Type the name of the company with the word’s ‘fraud,’ ‘complaints’ and ‘reviews’ in a search bar, and let others’ experiences guide you.”

... and to share personal information.

Another red flag would be if a travel provider is pressuring you to share sensitive financial information or other personal data that either feels unnecessary for your booking or comes through unofficial channels like an unsolicited call or email.

“Never provide your personal information, such as your credit card information or bank account details, until you verify that the website, app or communication is legitimate,” Allen emphasized. “Once a bad actor gets a hold of this information, they can commit identity theft under your name or drain your bank account.”

Be mindful of giving too much personal information to people you meet during your travels as well. Again, there’s nothing wrong with being friendly and making new connections, but a level of awareness is important to protect your finances and safety.

“Do not share information with strangers including your accommodations and itinerary while embarking on your journey,” Moro advised. “And if you’re traveling with a group, avoid separating from them.”

You can strike a balance between being friendly and staying on alert.

What to do if you suspect you’ve been scammed

Falling victim to a scam can be a demoralizing experience, but there are steps you can take to mitigate the damage.

“If your financial information has been compromised, contact your credit card company or bank right away,” Armeson said. “They can help you secure your accounts and get new cards. If your personal information has been compromised, consider freezing your credit ― which can protect you from fraudulent credit applications.”

You should also dispute any fraudulent charges and see if payments can be stopped or reversed. Reach out to your travel insurance provider as well.

“If you think your device was hacked, use a reputable security app to scan for malware. Uninstall any apps that you don’t recognize or didn’t install, and ensure your operating system and all apps are up to date with the latest software,” Armeson said, noting that a factory reset might help as well.

“Change your passwords for important accounts and make sure two-factor authentication is enabled on all of them.”

In the case of an in-person scam, try to avoid a confrontation and calmly extricate yourself from the situation. Consider reporting what happened to the local authorities if it feels safe to do so. There are also helpful resources like the AARP’s Fraud Watch Network , which is available to non-members as well.

“If the scam occurred on a booking site or social media platform, report it to them,” Armeson said. “Then, go and report it to the Federal Trade Commission . Reporting scams to the FTC gives us a better idea of the impact cybercrime is having on our society.”
