Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

Who Geico may be good for:  Geico is known for having policy options that work well for preferred and high-risk drivers. With nationwide availability and plentiful discounts, Geico may be a good choice for budget-conscious policyholders seeking standard policy coverage.

Who Geico may not be good for:  Geico underwrites its auto policies, but it partners with other insurance companies for its home products, meaning Geico does not do the service or claim handling of these policies. • Geico car insurance

Geico auto insurance received a Bankrate Score of 4.4 out of 5 points. To determine this Score, our insurance editorial team reviewed Geico’s average premiums, coverage options, discounts, customer satisfaction, financial strength and digital insurance features. The better a company performed in each of these categories, the higher its overall Bankrate Score.

Along with its high Bankrate Score, Geico was also named one of this year's best car insurance companies overall, as well as the Best Budget Auto Insurance Company in the 2024 Bankrate Awards and the Best Auto Insurance Company for Young Drivers. Thanks in part to its overall lower-than-average premiums and plentiful discount opportunities, Geico may be a good choice for drivers looking for a cheap premium. Average Geico car insurance rates are also significantly cheaper than the national average when adding a young driver to the policy. Plus, Geico offers a wealth of discounts specifically for younger or newer drivers, such as a good student and driver training discount.

Geico car insurance is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Its coverage options are generally standard and it does not have as many optional add-ons as some other car insurance carriers . The only additional options listed on Geico's website are emergency roadside service, rental reimbursement and mechanical breakdown insurance.

Why Geico won

Geico offers below-average auto insurance rates as well as a solid mix of coverage options, discounts and digital tools. These factors, combined with customer satisfaction and financial strength scores, earned Geico Bankrate Awards for Best Auto Insurance Company Overall (tied) and Best Budget Auto Insurance Company (tied). Geico offers competitive rates for newer drivers and a plethora of discounts geared toward younger drivers.

Geico car insurance cost

Based on Bankrate’s study of rate data from Quadrant Information Services, Geico is one of the cheapest car insurance companies . Its April 2024 average cost of car insurance is $1,741 per year for full coverage and $459 per year for minimum coverage. This is notably lower than the 2024 national average cost of car insurance at $2,314 per year for full coverage.

Geico car insurance rates by driving history

Car insurance companies may weigh driving records heavily when it comes to calculating car insurance rates . An at-fault accident or moving conviction, such as a speeding ticket or DUI, could make your car insurance more expensive compared to a driver with no accidents or tickets on their record. Below is a comparison of rates for drivers with different driving histories. A DUI conviction has been excluded as some insurance carriers may not accept drivers with a DUI.

Geico car insurance quotes by age

The age of a driver and the years of driving experience they’ve accumulated may also play an important role in determining car insurance rates. Young drivers and those who are newly licensed typically pay more for car insurance than drivers with more years of experience behind the wheel. Average insurance rates by age show that auto insurance premiums do tend to decrease over time until your 60s, but you may be able to find the best car insurance rate at any age by compiling car insurance quotes.

Below are comparisons that show young drivers both on and off their parents' policy, as well as how they compare to other age groups. All rates are for drivers with a clean driving record.

  • Geico life insurance

Similar to its home insurance policies, Geico life insurance is offered through partner companies.

Geico's partnered life insurance offerings are available in three policy types: term life, whole life and universal life insurance. Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific amount of time, such as 10 or 30 years, and is typically used to replace lost income and cover future expenses if the policyholder passes away during the policy term. Customers shopping for the best life insurance company may be able to obtain a term life insurance policy through Geico's partner companies with no medical exam, but they will likely still have to fill out a health and lifestyle questionnaire.

Whole life insurance and universal life insurance are both types of permanent life insurance . These policies do not have a policy end date as long as policy terms are fulfilled. In addition to helping with income, permanent life insurance policies could also be an integral part of estate planning.

Whole life insurance combines life insurance with an investment component.

  • Coverage for life
  • Tax-deferred savings benefit if premiums are paid

Term life insurance is precisely what the name implies: an insurance policy that is good for a specific term of time.

  • Fixed premium over term
  • No savings benefits
  • Outliving policy or policy cancellation results in no money back

  • Compare Geico with other insurers

If you’re still wondering if Geico could be a good fit for your insurance needs, you may want to consider requesting quotes from the companies below:

  • Is Geico a good insurance company?

Bankrate’s insurance editorial staff includes licensed agents and we aim to share our intimate industry knowledge to help our readers choose the best insurance company that suits their needs. Insurance is complex and we know that finding the right carrier isn’t always easy. That’s why we spend hundreds of hours each year conducting in-depth insurance company reviews.

Bankrate’s Geico insurance review revealed that the company does not underwrite many insurance products other than car insurance. However, its partnerships with non-affiliated companies allow customers to purchase most types of insurance, including affordable home insurance , umbrella and life insurance. If you are considering purchasing a Geico policy other than auto insurance, additional research on that particular company may be required to see if it’s the right fit.

Geico customer satisfaction

Bankrate analyzes a variety of metrics to evaluate an insurance company’s customer satisfaction, including third-party scores issued by J.D. Power. Every year, J.D. Power studies customer satisfaction, claims satisfaction and digital experience for various insurance companies across the country and issues them scores in each subject, with 1,000 being the highest score possible.

Since Geico partners with non-affiliated insurance companies for its home and life insurance products, you would want to search for rankings under the individual carrier name. For example, if you purchase a Liberty Mutual homeowners insurance policy through Geico, you would want to research claims and customer satisfaction rankings for Liberty Mutual.

However, Geico's full-service mobile app and online customer portals may be a big perk for tech-savvy shoppers. While the app is highly-rated on the App Store and Google Play , the company fell under the segment average in the service category of the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study. Consumers may be more satisfied with Geico's online sales flow as the company scored above average in the shopping category.

  • Geico auto claims satisfaction

Geico's scores in the 2023 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance Study vary depending on the region. Of the 11 regions, Geico scored above the industry average in five of them: California, Florida, New York, North Central and New England, where it had the highest ranking. It also ranked first for usage-based insurance. In the 2023 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Geico landed just above the industry average for claims satisfaction.

Geico customer complaints

Our editorial team also considers the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) complaint index. The NAIC keeps track of how many complaints are lodged against an insurance company and translates this data into a complaint index score. To understand this data, know the baseline (or average) amount of customer complaints is 1.0. A complaint index score higher than 1.0 means the company receives more complaints on average for its size, and vice versa.

Geico auto complaints

Geico has fewer complaints on average for its private passenger auto insurance for a company of its size. This index may indicate that Geico's auto insurance policyholders are generally happy with the company's service.

Other Geico tools and benefits

Auto insurance may be Geico’s most popular product, but customers can also access the following:

  • Travel insurance : Offered through Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, this insurance could help insure your travel costs including trip cancellations, lost or stolen travel documents or unplanned medical costs.
  • Jewelry insurance : Geico has partnered with Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group to help customers insure valuable and sentimental jewelry against theft, damage and loss.
  • Pet insurance : Caring for a pet can be a major expense, but pet insurance may help decrease some of the costs. Geico works with partner insurance carriers to provide coverage for most accidents, non-pre existing illnesses, dental care and more.
  • Frequently asked questions about Geico

Is Geico a sustainable company?

Geico supports three main initiatives through the Geico Philanthropic Foundation : education, community engagement and equity, justice, diversity and inclusion. The Foundation has donated an average of $6–8 million annually to over 7,000 charities in the last 20 years. It encourages policyholders and the wider public to submit their 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations for donation consideration, provided that the non-profit meets Geico’s criteria. Nominations can be made from the start of the year to November 30.

How do you file a claim with Geico?

Filing a claim with Geico can be done online through its website or the mobile app. Policyholders may also call the company's claims line at 800-841-3000.

As Geico homeowners insurance is offered through partner companies, contact information for property claims may vary based on the company that writes your policy. A comprehensive list of property claims contact numbers can be found on Geico's website .

How is Geico able to offer cheap car insurance?

Geico is known as a direct-to-consumer insurance provider. Since policyholders can buy insurance online, over the phone or via the mobile app, Geico doesn't have to pay for brokers to sell and service their insurance. These savings are passed down to its customers.

What insurance products does Geico offer?

Geico has over 20 insurance products to help policyholders protect their future finances. Policies range from umbrella coverage, watercraft and business insurance to commercial and medical malpractice insurance. Aside from auto policies, most other products Geico sells are underwritten by non-affiliated insurance companies. These companies set the rate and provide service and claim assistance — Geico only sells the product.

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze April 2024 rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Rates are weighted based on the population density in each geographic region. Quoted rates are based on a 40-year-old male and female homeowners with a clean claims and incidents history, good credit and the following coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverage that meets each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2021 Toyota Camry, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.

These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.

Age: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the ages 16-60 (base: 40 years) applied. Depending on age, drivers may be a renter or homeowner. Age is not a contributing rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts.

The rates for drivers ages 16-20 added to their parents' policy reflect the good student and driver's training discounts applied. The rates for drivers aged 16-20 on their own policy do not include the good student and driver's training discounts. Additionally, 25-year-old rates are based on the driver as a renter and 30+ on the driver as a homeowner.

Incidents: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following incidents applied: clean record (base), single speeding ticket and single at-fault accident.

  • Coverage A, Dwelling: $150,000, $300,000, $350,000, $450,000, $750,000
  • Coverage B, Other Structures: $15,000, $30,000, $35,000, $45,000, $75,000
  • Coverage C, Personal Property: $75,000, $150,000, $175,000, $225,000, $375,000
  • Coverage D, Loss of Use: $30,000, $60,000, $70,000, $90,000, $150,000
  • Coverage E, Liability: $500,000
  • Coverage F, Medical Payments: $1,000

The homeowners also have a $1,000 deductible, a $500 hail deductible and a 2 percent hurricane deductible (or the next closest deductible amounts that are available) where separate deductibles apply.

These are sample rates and should be used for comparative purposes only. Your quotes will differ.

If you’re a frequent traveler, annual travel insurance may be something you’ve been considering. Unlike single-trip insurance, annual travel insurance plans can cover you for an entire year, no matter how often you’re on the road.

Let’s look at the best yearly travel insurance companies, why we choose them and the coverage you can expect.

Factors we considered when picking travel insurance companies

We used the following criteria when choosing which companies we thought were best:

Cost . Annual plans can be expensive — depending on the type of coverage you choose — so we wanted ensure that they stayed affordable.

Types of coverage . Travel insurance for annual travelers can be limited in its coverage. We picked the ones with the broadest range of coverage for possible travel disruptions.

Coverage amounts . Annual trip insurance isn’t worth much if your limits are too low. Instead, we wanted plans with reasonable coverage amounts.

Customizability . If your travels take you to different places, you’ll want the ability to customize your plan. The best annual travel insurance plans can provide this.

How to choose the best annual travel insurance policy

While we’ve highlighted some of the best annual travel insurance companies, the truth is that the best plan for you isn’t going to be the best plan for someone else. If you’re interested in buying annual travel insurance, you’ll want to collect a variety of quotes to see which policy best fits your needs.

This may mean opting for a plan that covers pre-existing conditions or one that specifically includes high-risk activities. Or, if you’re in a country where health care is notoriously expensive, you may want to choose a policy with higher maximums.

Many credit cards come with complimentary travel insurance .

Whatever the case, do your research first and review all the plan details before making your purchase.

Geico RV Insurance

In our review of Geico RV insurance, we score their services a 9.0 out of 10.0 for their great reputation, high coverage limits, and add-on options.

Key Takeaways:

  • Overall, Geico ranks 3rd out of the RV insurance companies we have reviewed.
  • Geico can cover a variety of RVs including fifth wheels, travel trailers and motorhomes.
  • Extra options from Geico include personal effects coverage, vacation liability, emergency expensive coverage and total loss replacement.

Geico RV insurance is one of the many products offered by the nation’s second-largest insurer. We at the Guides Auto Team took an independent look at the company’s camper insurance offerings to see if they meet the same standards as Geico’s other insurance products.

As part of our industry-wide study, we checked to see how Geico compares to the country’s  best RV insurance companies . Our experts took a look at Geico’s industry reputation, coverage plans, availability, typical costs and reputation among customers. Below, we’ll reveal our findings on the quality of Geico RV insurance.

Why You Can Trust The MarketWatch Guides Team

The MarketWatch Guides Team is committed to providing reliable information to help you make the best decision possible about insuring your vehicle. Because consumers rely on us to provide objective and accurate information, we created a comprehensive rating system to formulate our rankings of the best car insurance companies. We collected data on dozens of auto insurance providers to grade the companies on a wide range of ranking factors. After 800 hours of research, the end result was an overall rating for each provider, with the insurers that scored the most points topping the list.

Geico RV Insurance Review

We give Geico RV insurance 9.0 out of 10.0 stars, ranking it among the market’s top providers. While Geico scored reasonably well in each category of our review, it excelled most in its customer service reputation and standing within the insurance industry.

Geico RV Insurance Pros and Cons

Geico rv insurance ratings.

Below you can see how Geico scored in all five of our rating categories:

* Ratings are determined by our editorial review team. Learn more about our scoring methodology below.

What Makes Geico RV Insurance Stand Out?

While there’s a lot to like about Geico RV insurance, the provider stood out to our review team for a few particular reasons:

  • Specialty coverage options : Geico doesn’t offer the biggest selection of additional coverage options for RVs, but the ones it does have are among the most useful for both full-time and part-time owners.
  • Total loss replacement : Most RVs depreciate rapidly, so not all insurers offer total loss replacement in addition to an actual cash value policy. Geico does offer replacement coverage, which may be attractive for people who want to protect their investment.

Geico RV Insurance Cost

While we didn’t find specifics about the typical rate for Geico RV insurance online, the company overall is considered affordable in most markets. That doesn’t guarantee that you’ll find cheap RV insurance rates , but it does mean that it’s worth getting a free quote to find out.

According to our research, the average cost of RV insurance across the nation is around $1,500 per year. Treat this figure as a general reference point, though, as there’s a huge range of what RV premiums could cost you. Coverage for a small travel trailer may cost a few hundred dollars per year, while insurance for a luxury motorhome could cost several thousand annually.

What Factors Affect RV Insurance Costs?

Insurers use several different variables to determine how much to charge for RV coverage. Each company uses varying factors and weighs each one differently, but the following are typically the most impactful:

  • RV value : The cost of your RV can be a major factor in setting your insurance rates.
  • Driving record : Since you’ll need to take your RV on the road at some point, your driving history has a major impact on your premiums.
  • Credit score : Insurers in most states are legally able to use your credit score as a determining factor in your premiums. As you may expect, drivers with low credit scores tend to pay higher rates for RV coverage.
  • Coverage limits : The kinds of coverage that you include in your RV insurance policy and the coverage limits you set will greatly affect the cost of camper insurance.
  • Location : Similar to auto insurance, companies adjust rates based on aspects of your location such as state insurance requirements and local risk factors.
  • Level of usage : Full-time RVers usually pay more for coverage than part-timers who only use their campers for leisure.
  • RV driving experience : Towing or driving an RV is significantly more difficult than driving a car on its own. Many insurers adjust insurance rates based on previous experience with piloting an RV.

Geico RV Insurance Discounts

While Geico doesn’t list specific discounts on its website, the company encourages RVers to ask their insurance agents about potential ways to save. Make sure to mention if you have a commercial driver’s license (CDL), have taken a defensive driving course or plan to bundle homeowners, renters or car insurance with your RV coverage.

Geico RV Insurance Coverage

Geico RV insurance works similarly to auto insurance in multiple ways. As long as you meet your state’s minimum coverage requirements, you can build a policy that fits your needs and budget by using both standard insurance types and specialty add-ons.

Standard RV Insurance Coverage Types

The standard coverages offered for Geico RV insurance are nearly identical to the ones you’d find for auto insurance. They include the plans mentioned below.

  • Bodily injury liability coverage : Covers medical bills and lost wages for other parties involved in an accident you’re found at fault for
  • Property damage liability coverage : Covers the cost of damages to other vehicles and property harmed by an accident that you caused
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) : Covers medical expenses and lost wages for you and your party, regardless of who’s at fault for an accident
  • Medical payments coverage (MedPay) : Covers medical bills but not lost wages for you and your party no matter who caused an accident
  • Uninsured motorist coverage/underinsured motorist : Covers you and your party’s damages and medical expenses if an at-fault driver can’t pay for the costs incurred
  • Collision coverage : Covers damages to your vehicle following an accident, no matter who caused it
  • Comprehensive coverage : Covers physical issues with your camper caused by fire, theft, flooding and other sources of damage separate from accidents

Geico RV Coverage Add-Ons

Like most insurers, Geico offers specialty policy add-ons that can cover other aspects of using, moving and storing your RV. The company lists the following coverage options on its website:

  • Total loss replacement : Covers the replacement cost of your RV and not just its actual cash value in the event of a total loss.
  • Special windshield deductible : Covers repairs to your camper’s windshield along with all replacement costs apart from a $50 deductible.
  • Replacement cost personal effects : Covers the replacement of damaged or stolen personal property on your RV. Either $1,000 or $5,000 comes standard if you carry comprehensive and collision coverage, though the exact amount varies by state.
  • Vacation liability : Pays for damages to others’ property and for injuries caused by your RV when it’s docked. These liability claims are typically not covered by your standard liability policy because your RV is not on the road.
  • Emergency expense coverage : Takes care of food, lodging and other travel costs if your RV breaks down and can’t move for a long period of time. If you’ve got comprehensive and collision coverage from Geico, you’ll be covered for up to $1,000.

As with discounts, your local Geico insurance agent may know about more coverage options than what’s listed on the company’s website.

The insurer quickly mentions “enhanced RV coverage” on Geico.com, though it makes no mention of what’s included. Note that this expanded plan for Geico RV insurance isn’t available in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan or North Carolina.

RV Types Covered by Geico

The Geico RV insurance webpage notes that the company covers both towable RVs and motorhomes of most model years. The few model types not covered by Geico RV insurance include bus conversions and campers worth more than $500,000.

What Is a Towable RV?

Towable RVs require a separate vehicle to pull them from one site to another. Geico mentions protecting several types of towables on its website:

  • Conventional travel trailers : The most common type of RV, these campers have the widest range of all categories in terms of features, amenities and price points.
  • Fifth-wheel travel trailers : These campers get their name from the unique trailer hitch required to tow them. They’re among the largest and best appointed RVs on the road.
  • Folding camper trailers : Also known as pop-up campers, these towables pop up to reveal a full-size RV after packing down vertically for easier towing.
  • Truck campers : Not technically towables, this type of camper attaches to the bed of a pickup truck, essentially converting the truck into an RV.
  • Toy haulers : These are RV models that come with a garage so that they can haul equipment such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), kayaks and motorcycles.

Geico may also offer coverage for teardrop travel trailers, though this isn’t listed on the site. Check with a Geico agent if you’re unsure of whether your camper is eligible for coverage.

What Is an RV Motorhome?

Geico also mentions that it covers motorhomes, which are referred to as self-propelled RVs. These drivable campers come in three main categories:

  • Class A motorhome : Typically the largest and most luxurious drivable RV available, these motorhomes are the most likely to exceed Geico’s coverage limits.
  • Class B motorhome : Class B motorhomes are sometimes referred to as camper vans because they are usually built atop a cargo van chassis.
  • Class C motorhome : Larger than Class B models but smaller than Class A campers, these motorhomes offer a nice balance of accommodations and maneuverability.

Geico Customer Reviews

There are few customer reviews for Geico RV insurance online, which is pretty standard across the industry. However, reviews for the company at large can provide some insight into how it handles its customers.

Our team read through Geico insurance reviews on sites such as the BBB and Trustpilot to see what customers were saying about the company. We noticed a few patterns in both negative and positive Geico reviews.

Policyholders with positive opinions often mentioned the quality of service they got from insurance agents, who many said went above and beyond to be helpful. On the other hand, people who reported negative experiences regularly brought up communication difficulties.

Our team reached out to Geico for comment on these reviews but has yet to receive a response.

Do You Need RV Insurance?

You’ll need RV insurance that covers at least the state minimum requirements if you have a motorhome, because it’s technically a vehicle. In most cases, you’re not legally required to have insurance for towable RVs.

Whichever kind of RV you own, however, it’s probably a good idea to insure it. On top of being expensive, RVs combine the risks of both cars and homes. That means the chances of something happening to them are relatively high.

Possible Sources of RV Damage

Insurance can protect you financially from some of the risks faced by RV owners. These potential issues include:

  • Traffic accidents : Car wrecks are one of the most common sources of loss for RV owners.
  • Leaky roof or windows : It’s normal for the seals around windows and roof panels to come loose over time in an RV. When that happens, water can easily get inside and damage the interior.
  • Theft : While RV theft is not commonly reported, it still happens from time to time.
  • Tree branches : Branches and entire trees can be risky for RVs, especially if you spend a lot of time in forested areas.
  • Weather : Ice storms, tornadoes, floods and other extreme weather events can damage campers even when they’re in storage.
  • Fire : Camper fires are one of the most common sources of damage to RVs in the country, as many feature plenty of electrical wiring and appliances like cooktops.

RV Traffic Accident Statistics

Bar graph depicting a rising number of traffic accidents year-over-year

Traffic crashes are very common in the U.S., posing a real risk to RV owners as well as to those who drive standard vehicles. Even the most skilled drivers have to share the road with those who may be inexperienced, distracted or otherwise more likely to get into accidents.

Even towable campers spend time on the road, which is one reason why experts recommend coverage for all RVs. That way, your RV will stay safe as it navigates past potential dangers.

RV Fire Statistics

Infographic showing annual RV fire-damage statics, including injuries, deaths and property damages, from 2018 through 2020

Fires in motorhomes and trailers are more common than owners may assume. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported that between 2018 and 2020, there were an average of 4,200 RV fires reported to emergency services each year. These incidents resulted in around 125 injuries and 15 deaths annually.

RV fires also caused massive amounts of property damage during that time. Each fire caused an average of $15,350 in damage per incident, leading to a total of over $60 million in property damages each year.

Geico Insurance For RV: Conclusion

After examining the company, our team believes Geico RV insurance is a solid option for coverage, especially for those who place a high value on customer service. The provider also has enough specialty coverage options and discounts to build a policy that fits your needs at affordable rates.

Geico RV Insurance: Recommended Alternatives

While we at the Guides Auto Team recommend Geico RV insurance, we’d encourage you to get quotes from other companies as well. Asking for RV insurance quotes from multiple providers allows you to compare your options to see which ones have the best rates for you.

State Farm: Best for Local Service

People who value in-person service will definitely want to take a look at State Farm, the nation’s largest insurer. With a network of over 19,000 local representatives, you’ll rarely find yourself far from one of the company’s insurance agencies. State Farm also offers 24/7 roadside assistance through its mobile app to support RVers in the event of unexpected issues.

Progressive: Editor’s Choice

The company scored well in every category, offering one of the best combinations of coverage and potential discounts that we found. This means that most RVers can get the coverage they’re looking for at competitive rates.

Geico RV Insurance: FAQ

Below are some frequently asked questions about Geico RV insurance plans:

Is Geico RV Insurance Legit?

Geico’s RV insurance division has a great reputation in the industry and with customers, which is a main reason why they ranked third out of the providers we’ve studies.

What does RV insurance typically cost?

While we found the average cost of RV insurance to be around $1,500 per year, this can be a little misleading. RV insurance premiums can range from just a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on many variables.

If you have comprehensive coverage on your policy, Geico will cover water damage to your RV. Comprehensive policies cover a wide range of nonaccident issues.

What insurance should I have on my RV?

Most experts recommend getting full coverage insurance on your RV. These policies include collision and comprehensive coverage in addition to personal liability insurance and medical coverage.

How We Rated Geico RV Insurance

Because consumers rely on us to provide objective and accurate information, we created a comprehensive rating system to formulate our rankings of the best RV insurance companies. We collected data on dozens of camper insurance providers to grade the companies on a wide range of ranking factors. The end result was an overall rating for each provider, and the insurers that scored the most points top our list.

Here are the factors our ratings take into account:

  • Reputation : Our research team considered market share, ratings from industry experts and years in business when giving this score.
  • Availability : Recreational vehicle insurance companies with greater state-by-state availability and few eligibility requirements scored highest in this category.
  • Coverage : RVers can benefit from a wide variety of specialized coverage options. We evaluated companies based on the amount and diversity of coverage add-ons they offer for camper insurance.
  • Cost : As RV insurance costs are highly variable, our research team mainly considered the availability of policy discounts.
  • Customer Experience : Our research team took into account companies’ industry reputations with organizations such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as well as the ease and availability of in-person, over-the-phone and online services.
