Wisconsin State Capitol from West Washington

Wisconsin State Capitol

Wisconsin State Capitol at dusk

Our Wisconsin State Capitol is without question one of the most beautiful in the country. Perched atop Madison’s beautiful isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, it’s the third Capitol building on this site and was completed in 1917.

Four wings holding offices stretch out from a central Rotunda capped with the only granite dome in the United States. The statue atop the dome, officially named Wisconsin , reaches 284 feet, 5 inches high and faces direction of Washington, DC. It was intentionally designed to be a few inches shorter than the United States Capitol. Inside, Edwin Blashfield’s mural covers the Rotunda’s interior and depicts Wisconsin’s many resources.

Wisconsin State Capitol dome view from the Rotunda

On a visit, you can explore the passageways, the Rotunda, and lay your fingers on 43 varieties of stone and a series of mosaics and fossils including coral, starfish, gastropods, and more. Weather permitting, you can head up to the fourth floor and go outside to the observation deck where you can gaze upon the city from the base of the dome and browse the fascinating artifacts and photos inside. This year, the center of the Rotunda features “A Century of Stories”, displays and exhibits taking you through the State Capitol’s 100-year history. They include previous Capitol buildings on this block (there were several), major events that happened in and around the Capitol, and people who have shaped the state’s past, present, and future.

For better or worse, they also make laws in this building; a Capitol Tour brings you to offices, chambers, and other areas where elected representatives do their work. Plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and museums surround the Capitol on the Square too; you can occupy a whole day just exploring this block! Free guided Capitol tours are available seven days a week. Check out a virtual reality Capitol tour here .

History buffs and architecture aficionados alike will appreciate a stop at the Wisconsin state Capitol. Constructed between 1906 and 1917, the building is an iconic fixture in the Madison skyline. Among the architectural highlights are the council chambers, which were modeled after Venice 's Doge's Palace , as well as the governor's conference room, which is decorated with 26 historical and allegorical paintings by Hugo Ballin. Other chambers within the building feature French and Italian marble, skylights and murals. If you can only admire the capitol from the outside, pay attention to the dome, which rises more than 200 feet and features a bronze Daniel Chester French statue (French is best known for designing the Lincoln Memorial ). During the summer months, be sure to stop by the sixth-floor museum and observation deck.

Past visitors described the building as "beautiful" and recommended taking a guided tour for the best experience.

You'll find the Capitol building in downtown Madison. From the UW Madison campus, simply walk down State Street toward the building. Entrance is free. The Capitol is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free guided tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 9, 10 and 11 a.m., as well as 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Tours on Sundays are available at 1, 2 and 3 p.m., and an additional 4 p.m. tour is available Monday through Friday. #1 University of Wisconsin – Madison Memorial Union

One of the star attractions of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the Memorial Union is beloved by students and locals alike. Open since Oct. 5, 1928, and perched on the shores of Lake Mendota, the union is perhaps best known for its terrace, which faces the lake and is filled with colorful sunburst chairs and tables perfect for enjoying the view, a brat and a pitcher of beer. When the terrace closes for the season (typically in late September), retreat inside to Der Rathskeller. With its German beer hall vibe and cozy fireplaces, Der Rathskeller is a popular spot to watch Badger games. There's also a stage for open mic nights and plenty of seating. Other Union attractions include rotating art exhibits and galleries, an ice cream shop, multiple eateries and a store selling grab-and-go items, along with Badger apparel and gifts.

Past visitors raved about the union, specifically the terrace, with a few calling it among the top spots for Madison travelers to visit. According to reviewers, the best time to visit is in summer, when the weather is just right for enjoying the building's lakefront perch. Just remember: This is a popular spot, so you may have to wait for one of the coveted terrace tables if you're here during the busy evening hours.

Eggy and Dogs In A Pile Announce Two-Night Co-Headlining Run at The Capitol Theatre

Eggy and Dogs In A Pile Announce Two-Night Co-Headlining Run at The Capitol Theatre

Eggy and Dogs In A Pile will come together for a two-night run at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y., on Nov. 29 and 30. The newly dropped dates arrive after a summer hot streak for both ensembles, who have spent the last season and beyond gaining national notoriety while traversing the country and sharing songs with fans, both new and old.

The impending concerts, presented by Relix , will feature altering closers, with Eggy and Dogs In a Pile each performing approximately 90-minute sets on Friday and Saturday nights. Each evening will culminate in a collaborative encore, which fuses their musical stylings into an amalgamated instrumental force. These shows represent the continuation of The Capitol Theatre’s Friendsgiving tradition, which was led by Twiddle in years past.

“This two-night run is the culmination of what both bands have been working towards for a long time. We are lucky to share it with each other and even luckier to share it with the folks that frequent a first-class venue like The Capitol Theatre,” said Dogs In A Pile keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan.

Eggy drummer Alex Bailey boasted, “It’s not often that a place lives up to its hype, even more rare to exceed expectations. The Cap is one of those special places that words never quite do justice. We’ve had the opportunity to experience the magic as fans and have now gotten to share the stage in support of Twiddle, The Disco Biscuits, and Umphrey’s McGee. To be able to deliver a show as a headlining band (alongside our good friends, Dogs In A Pile, no less!) is an absolute dream come true. We can’t wait to celebrate this weekend with everyone.”

For Eggy, the impending two-night stand will arrive after the September 6 release of its forthcoming LP, Waiting Game, and a hotbed of ensuing appearances, including festival slots at Austin City Limits and Sea.Hear.Now. Previously, the group drew a crowd during their Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival stand and a support slot during Blues Travelers’ annual takeover of Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Dogs In A Pile have turned up at iconic venues like The Mishawaka while on tour with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Andy Frasco & The U.N., this summer. Notably, the band is preparing for a lengthy fall run, which includes an opening slot for The String Cheese Incident on Sept. 28 at Wonderland Forest. Via press release, Dogs noted their current effort to deliver a new album in 2025.

Ticket presale for the Relix Presents event is on now through Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10 p.m. E.T. General on-sale begins Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. E.T.

How Biden is spending his final months as president

Joe Biden.

President Joe Biden is launching a new phase of his presidency this week.

Liberated from the constraints of a re-election campaign , he’s in the beginning stage of a strategy that will take him to places at home and abroad over the next five months that he most likely would have ignored as a candidate, not with the goal of keeping the White House , but of keeping his legacy and some of his most significant accomplishments secure.

On Thursday, Biden travels to a small town in a county in southwest Wisconsin that had voted reliably Democratic for two decades until Donald Trump carried it twice. Biden will make more trips like these, to Republican-leaning areas — and even eventually red states — to make the case that his agenda has also benefited those who voted against him, according to multiple Biden advisers.

Aides are also reallocating time Biden had reserved for domestic politics to focus instead on foreign policy, with plans for an international farewell tour of sorts that could include a long-promised trip to Africa in October.

“The schedule will be robust and he plans to leave it all on the field,” White House communications director Ben LaBolt said.

Biden enters the twilight of his presidency with little recent precedent to guide him. Re-elected presidents begin their second terms knowing they have years to begin shaping their legacies. Recent one-term presidents, on the other hand, were fighting until their final weeks to hold onto the office.

Yet, one senior Biden adviser noted that the president has been mindful of the weight of history since the moment he first entered the Oval Office, weeks after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and amid public health and economic crises.

“It’s been ever present, because the stakes have been so high,” the adviser said.

Still, the president’s aides said a new approach was required after Biden made the consequential decision in late July to end his bid for a second term and endorse Vice President Kamala   Harris to replace him on the Democratic ticket. One of the first directives Biden gave after bowing out was to his chief of staff, Jeff Zients, saying he wanted his final months in the Oval Office to be as consequential as any similar period in his term so far.

In general terms, that meant implementing the pillars of his legislative record — infrastructure investments, boosting manufacturing, climate change initiatives and expanded veterans care — while looking at where the president can lay the groundwork for unrealized or even new policy ideas that would give a potential Harris administration a running start.

Zients then set about working with other top advisers to put a specific action plan in place, the early contours of which were presented to Biden when he began a two-week, bicoastal vacation following his farewell speech at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19, Biden aides said.

Advisers said it focuses on four goals: finding new ways to increase investment in U.S. infrastructure; reducing costs for Americans; safeguarding freedoms the president believes are under siege; and strengthening U.S. alliances to confront global challenges.

Each goal aims to burnish Biden’s legacy, but the president’s aides said they also will help make a case against Trump that they hope will help Harris’ campaign.

“Good governance is a way to show contrast,” one official said.

Biden’s team is regularly in touch with the Harris campaign operation — one, advisers note, they largely built — to ensure the president’s actions are helpful, Biden aides said. The goal, they said, is for Biden to act “surgically” and to campaign where it is “strategically impactful” for him to go, as one of them put it.

The plan is for Biden to focus on constituencies where he has had appeal, such as senior voters and blue-collar communities, aides said.

The Biden official also argued that the president's record continues to be popular among Democrats. “It’s not like 2008,” the official noted, when then-President George W. Bush was poised to leave office with approval ratings as low as the 20% range and an economy in free fall.

Much of Biden’s domestic travel will be under the guise of official administration business, such as stops he plans Thursday and Friday in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Biden also is expected to travel extensively overseas, including in October after the annual gathering of world leaders in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, according to two senior administration officials and two former senior U.S. officials familiar with the plans.

The possible countries he could visit in October, as the presidential campaign is at a fever pitch, include Germany, as well as at least one stop in sub-Saharan Africa, the officials said.

None of the ideas under discussion have been finalized on the president’s schedule, one of the senior administration officials said, adding: “The team is pulling together options.”

Biden does plan to travel to Brazil for the Group of 20 summit and to Peru for a gathering of Asia-Pacific leaders, officials said. He is looking to hold high-profile meetings with key world leaders, including at the U.N. General Assembly later this month and a potential meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in November on the sidelines of the G20, the officials said.

Since dropping out of the 2024 race, Biden has had a lot more time to devote to foreign policy matters than his senior aides had planned for when they thought he would be campaigning nonstop for re-election, the officials said.

“His foreign policy agenda is very full” in these final months, according to White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett.

Now, Biden can chat longer on the phone with world leaders, extending calls that previously would have been curtailed with a more jam-packed schedule. In recent conversations, the president has mentioned to his counterparts that he looks forward to seeing them again before leaving office and has even joked about how much more free time he has on his hands, a Biden aide said.

While Biden’s goals for his final months in office are set, specific plans beyond September remain subject to change, aides said, noting the presidency naturally comes with unseen events.

His role in the campaign won’t be as robust as then-President Barack Obama’s was eight years ago for then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, which included regular campaign events in battleground states including a large, closing joint rally in Philadelphia.

But Biden aides pointed to the president’s event Monday in Pittsburgh as indicative of what they believe he can do for Harris, starting with vouching for her character and commitment to supporting the kind of working- and middle-class voters he has long considered his political base.

“We can help strengthen the argument, fortify the argument for her in the way that we did as vice president to President Obama, and the same way Vice President Harris helped us to win in 2020,” the senior Biden adviser said.

On Tuesday at a White House event, Biden said he would in the weeks ahead “talk with Americans all across the country about the progress we’re seeing in their communities.” He also indicated he wants to make the most of his final months there.

“I’m not going to be in the White House much longer, but you got to come and see me,” Biden told the four local officials who participated virtually in Tuesday’s event.

Robert f. kennedy jr. sues to remove himself from wisconsin's presidential ballot.

wisconsin capitol tours

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Robert F. Kennedy Jr . has filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin trying to get his name removed from the battleground state's presidential ballot after the state elections commission voted to keep him on it.

Kennedy suspended his campaign in August and endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump. Kennedy said he would try to get his name removed from ballots in battleground states, while telling his supporters that they could continue to back him in the majority of states where they are unlikely to sway the outcome.

Kennedy also filed a lawsuit in neighboring Michigan but a judge ruled Tuesday that he must remain on the ballot. A lawsuit filed Friday in North Carolina seeking his removal from the ballot is pending.

Kennedy argued in the Wisconsin lawsuit filed Tuesday in Dane County Circuit Court that third party candidates are discriminated against because state law treats Republicans and Democrats running for president differently.

Watch: Wisconsin Elections Commission votes to keep Kennedy on the ballot in Wisconsin:

Republicans and Democrats have until 5 p.m. on the first Tuesday in September before an election to certify their presidential nominee. Independent candidates like Kennedy can only withdraw before the Aug. 6 deadline for submitting nomination papers.

State law does not provide a way for independent presidential candidates to remove themselves from the ballot after they have submitted nomination papers, unless they die. Kennedy filed his papers before the Aug. 6 deadline.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission, citing that law, voted 5-1 last week to approve Kennedy’s name for the ballot after an attempt by Republican commissioners to remove him failed. That vote allowed county election clerks to begin printing ballots to meet upcoming state deadlines for mailing absentee ballots.

Kennedy is asking that the elections commission be barred from putting his name on the ballot and that the court put the commission’s vote on the matter on hold.

A spokesperson for the Wisconsin Elections Commission did not respond to an email seeking comment on the lawsuit.

Kennedy is one of eight presidential candidates on the ballot in Wisconsin.

The presence of independent and third party candidates on the ballot could be a key factor in a state where four of the last six presidential elections have been decided by between 5,700 votes and about 23,000 votes.

In 2016, Green Party nominee Jill Stein got just over 31,000 votes in Wisconsin — more than Trump’s winning margin of just under 23,000 votes. Some Democrats have blamed her for helping Trump win the state and the presidency that year.

If you’re curious if Weir and co. are headed to your neck of the woods, you can find Weir’s 2024 tour itinerary here .

Oteil Burbridge set list

While we have no idea what Oteil and friends have planned for this upcoming run, we can make an educated guess by looking backward at what they performed at the final gig of their 2023 tour, according to Set List FM .

01.) “No More Doubt” (Oteil & the Peacemakers song) 02.) “Cats Under the Stars” (Jerry Garcia Band cover) 03.) “Waiting on a Song” (Duane Betts cover) 04.) “Mighty High” (Mighty Clouds of Joy cover) 05.) “My Sisters and Brothers (In Christ)” (The Sensational Nightingales cover) 06.) “Fixin’ to Die Blues” (Bukka White cover) 07.) “Standing on the Moon” (Grateful Dead cover) 08.) “Too Many Times” (Oteil & the Peacemakers song) 09.) “Hot ‘Lanta” (The Allman Brothers Band song) Set 2

10.) “Rooster” (Oteil & the Peacemakers song) 11.) “Rubin and Cherise” (Jerry Garcia Band cover) 12.) “Tore Up Over You” (The Midnighters cover) 13.) “Midnight Moonlight” (Old & In the Way cover) 14.) “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” (The Allman Brothers Band song) 15.) “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” (Bob Dylan cover) 16.) “Magnificent Sanctuary Band” (Donny Hathaway cover) Encore

Oteil Burbridge new music

On Sept. 15, 2023, Burbridge released his nine-track record “Lovely View of Heaven.” Over 67 minutes, the gifted bassist brings nine unassuming, bluesy ballads to life.

After a handful of spins, we repeatedly returned to the calming “Stella Blue,” twangy yet chill “Mission In The Rain” and softly romantic “China Doll.”

What we’ll remember most from this album though is the dusty, gorgeously arranged “So Many Roads,” which teems with life. Around the song’s six-minute mark, a striking violin kicks in and takes the sound to a higher plain. It’s a tremendous piece of music and impossible to listen to only once.

If you want to hear the record for yourself, you can find “Lovely View of Heaven” here .

Oteil Burbridge band members

As noted above, Oteil is bringing a few friends along for the ride.

Should you go to a show, here’s who will be playing what:

Melvin Seals (vocals, piano, organ)

Steve Kimock (guitar)

Jason Crosby (keyboard, violin, guitar)

Tom Guarna (guitar)

John Kimock (drummer)

Lamar Williams Jr. (vocalist)
