I love using Safari for a great browsing experience, but I was recently unable to clear my history, which was giving me some problems. Fortunately, I discovered a solution to my problem. Let’s take a look at some troubleshooting steps and solutions.

Why Is My Clear History Button Grey?

If your Clear History button is grey, the most likely reason is that you do not have any History to clear. However, you may also be experiencing a grey Clear History button due to certain Content & Privacy Restrictions within Screen Time being enabled. You can check on iPhone via Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and ensure that Safari is enabled. Note, however, that this will require your password.

On Mac, you can disable Screen Time via System Settings > Screen Time>  Content & Privacy > Content Restrictions . Ensure Access to Web Content is set to  Unrestricted.  Of course, if you didn’t set up Screen Time in the first place, this likely isn’t your issue. Keep reading for further solutions.

How to clear the cache on your iPhone (and why you should)

How many tabs are open on your mobile browser right now? Go ahead, check -- you might be surprised by what you find.

Americans spend over five hours a day on their smartphones. That's over five hours of your phone potentially accessing, retrieving, and saving cache and cookies, which can negatively impact your iPhone's storage space .

What is cache?

Cache is the temporary storage of some data, like parts of a website from the last time you visited it, for example. Browser cache is content from a website that is stored on your phone during a browser session to help the browser execute faster the next time you visit that page.

Also:  How to clear Google search cache on Android

Cache data can slow down your phone's overall browsing performance, however, since it takes up storage space on your device, so it's good to clear it out regularly. In this article, we mainly focus on clearing web browser cache on an iPhone, but you should know that other types of cache include mobile app cache and CPU cache.

How to clear cache on iPhone

What you'll need: Everything you need to clear your browser cache is within the iPhone's settings app or the Safari app, so grab your iPhone to get started.

Keep in mind that clearing the cache can clear private data, which can close all open tabs in Safari. This is also likely to log you out of all your websites, prompting you to sign in again the next time you open them.

How do I clear the cache from Chrome on iPhone?

If Google Chrome is your preferred browser, it may have a substantial amount of data stored on your device, which could also slow down performance.

To clear the cache in Chrome, open the Google Chrome app and follow these steps:

  • Tap  Settings .
  • Go to  Privacy and Security .
  • Select  Clear Browsing Data .
  • Select the time from which to delete the data (if you want to delete all your browsing history, choose All Time ).
  • Go through the items you'd like to delete, like your Browsing History, Cookies and Site Data, Cached Images and Files, Saved Passwords , and Autofill Data.
  • Confirm by tapping  Clear Browsing Data  at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Done when you've deleted the Chrome cache.

Also: Apple releases iOS 17.4 with podcast transcripts, new emojis, and EU app store changes

Clearing the browsing and cache data in Google Chrome doesn't close all open tabs, but it will refresh each tab and log you out of websites. Once you tap on one of the tabs you want to access, you'll have to log back in.

How can I browse on Safari without history?

If you're learning how to clear cache on an iPhone, you may also be wondering if there's a way to use Safari without saving any browsing history. You can turn on Private Browsing by following these steps:

  • Open  Safari .
  • Tap on  Tabs .
  • Choose Private .

You can also enable private browsing by going to your iPhone Settings, finding Safari, and toggling on the private option.

How do I clear my app cache on my iPhone?

To clear the app cache from your iPhone Settings app, you can either delete the app and reinstall it, offload it, or try to clear the cache from within the app. Unfortunately, iOS apps don't have consistent settings across the board that would allow you to clear the cache of every app.

Also: Apple warns: Don't put your wet iPhone in rice. Do this instead

Apps like TikTok and CapCut, for example, have options to Clear Cache within their respective settings. Amazon lets users delete their browsing history, while the Reddit app can clear local history. It all depends on what the app's settings let you do.

Is "clear cache" the same as offloading?

Not exactly, though app offloading can help if your phone is slowed down by low storage. To offload an app  means to uninstall an app without deleting any documents or data associated with it.

Also: Apple secures iMessage against threats from the future

To offload an app, go to  Settings , then  General , choose  iPhone Storage  and select the app to offload, then tap  Offload App . If you ever download it again, you'll pick up where you left off for that app.

Are cookies and cache the same thing?

Cookies and cache are not the same. Cookies are data files that websites send to your phone, including things like saved passwords to keep you logged into an account or even the website preferences from the previous time you visited.

Also: I tested the best Mint alternatives, and this is my new favorite money app

Though they do sound harmless, cookies can also track how you browse the internet. They monitor patterns in your browsing and search history, even seeing what you clicked on or what your mouse hovered over. Ever made an innocuous search on Amazon only to find ads for it on all the apps you use? Cookies likely made that possible.

Can I block cookies on my iPhone?

While you can block cookies on Safari, the ranks are divided on whether you should. Blocking cookies entirely means that websites won't be able to get information from you, but it also means that some websites may not even work correctly on your browser. A lot of users actually enjoy a more personalized browsing experience, so cookies are a good thing for them.

If you'd like to block cookies in Safari, follow these steps:

  • Go to  Settings  and select  Safari .
  • Tap on the toggle next to  Block All Cookies .

There are also third-party extensions that help you block cookies and trackers in Google Chrome, like Ghostery and Disconnect .

How do I check iPhone storage?

On an iPhone, Settings can show you what's taking up most of your media storage, like photos, videos, and music. You can also see what each particular app's storage consumption is, which includes temporary data. To view the details of your iPhone's storage space, follow these steps:

  • Go to the iPhone Settings .
  • Tap on General .
  • Select iPhone Storage .
  • Scroll through to find the app you're looking for.
  • Tap on the app to view storage status and options.

Unfortunately, you can't clear your iPhone cache for third-party apps by going into your Settings app, but this gives you a visual of your iPhone's storage and the option to delete or offload apps.

Also: Here's the fastest way to declutter your iPhone and free up Gigabytes of space

When you look at your device's storage space, you'll probably see recommended steps you can take to optimize your iPhone's storage, like offloading unused apps.

Fascinating and Very Risqué History of $50 Million Fort Lauderdale Gem Revealed

A staggering Fort Lauderdale, FL, property with a fascinating—and rather risqué—architectural history has hit the market for an astounding $49,995,000.

The six-bedroom, 7.5-bathroom mansion has a cantilever design that gives it the appearance of floating atop the canal that surrounds it on three sides.

But the cantilever is not the only fascinating part of this property’s history, or design.

According to Mansion Global , the home was designed by famed architect  Max Strang at the behest of his clients  Brad and Shona Tuckman , the original owners of this modernist property.

However, when the Tuckmans enlisted Strang to design a home for them, they did so with a different plot of land in mind—one that they had purchased for $2.25 million just a stone’s throw away, on the edge of the same canal.

According to Brad, who is an entrepreneur and founder of The Fort , a pickleball club and restaurant set to open at the end of the year, Strang took the job incredibly seriously. He recalled how the architect set about examining every inch of the site, even “climbing trees” to assess the best views from a potential home.

But instead of a stunning vista, the architectural mastermind spotted something far more eye-opening: a nude man strolling along the canal.

“As he’s doing it, some dude across the canal is walking around naked—he’s a nudist guy—around 150 feet away,” Brad told Mansion Global in 2022. Strang factored in the potential for unwanted nudity to his original design, opting to create a home that featured very few canal-facing windows.

“He didn’t want to see the naked guy,” Brad joked.

As it happened, such precautions were unnecessary, because the Tuckmans ended up buying a separate $7,845,000 plot of land—the sought-after area at the tip of the peninsula, which was once owned by billionaire Wayne Huizenga . And it was here that they decided to construct their home.

“Nobody misses the house. It’s really stunning,” says listing agent Tim Elmes , with Compass. “Most homes that are two stories are a solid two stories. This has got these big empty spaces, one in the middle and one under the cantilever. I don’t know of another home that is cantilevered like this.”

According to seller Brad, while the cantilever may be one of the more stunning and unique elements of the home, its creation was more of a problem-solving measure—namely to deal with potential flooding.

After he and Shona, a filmmaker, discovered that the land was prone to flooding, they decided to lift it up using the cantilever. The process cost about $1 million.

Thankfully, it seems the arduous architectural move was worth it.

The home was completed in 2020 and is now listed for just under $50 million.

And while the price is high, the home offers many awe-inspiring touches courtesy of Strang, including the property’s exterior, which looks to be made of wood but is constructed from a very different material altogether.

“It’s porcelain tile, which is more and more in vogue, and [the sellers] were early on in doing it,” Elmes explains. “It looks like wood unless you touch it. You’d think it was wood, but it’s impervious to sun and weather.”

where is safari search history

Award-winning architect Strang designed the 9,995-square-foot home to take advantage of the expansive waterfront.

“It may be the only home in the entire city, brand-new home in mint condition on over an acre,” Elmes says. “Most homes have 100 feet [of waterfront]. Most point lots have 300 plus or minus. This has 740 feet of waterfront with insane views.”

The plot of land also boasts an impressive heritage.

Former owner Huizenga, who died in 2018, was the former owner of the Miami Dolphins , the Florida Panthers , and the Miami Marlins and founder of businesses such as Waste Management and Blockbuster.

The modern cantilevered home on the prime site has four bedrooms, all with walls of windows. An attached guesthouse has an additional bedroom as well as a full apartment.

The outdoor space includes a pool that runs the length of the home and, of course, a pickleball court. There is an extra lot between the house and the neighbor’s home.

where is safari search history

The buyer “could use it for whatever, a football field, soccer for the kids, or they could develop a house for the kids when they get older. It’s a very unique property in that respect,” Elmes says.

Currently, there is a small dock for a runabout, but Elmes says there is plenty of space for a much larger boat.

The sellers are downsizing, and Elmes says there have been a few showings already.

As for the perfect buyer, it’s “whoever can write a check for $50 million,” Elmes says.

“If you spend that kind of coin, you kind of want to have something that doesn’t look like a cookie-cutter house, right? This wins that competition in spades,” he says.

While actions by unions in recent years to advocate for workers are a reminder of the holiday's activist roots, the three-day weekend it creates has become a touchstone in the lives of Americans marking the unofficial end of summer.

Here's what to know about Labor Day:

How did Labor Day become a federal holiday?

Its origins date back to the late 19th century, when activists first sought to establish a day to pay tribute to workers.

The first Labor Day celebration in the U.S. took place in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, when some 10,000 workers marched in a parade organized by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor.

Workers were seeing their quality of life decline as they transitioned from artisan to factory jobs, even as the quality of life of factory owners was "just skyrocketing," said Todd Vachon, an assistant professor in the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations.

In the years that followed, a handful of cities and states began to adopt laws recognizing Labor Day. President Grover Cleveland signed a congressional act in 1894 making it a federal holiday.

That was the same year that workers for the Pullman Palace Car Company went on strike after the railcar-maker cut wages without reducing rent in the company-owned town where workers lived near Chicago, Vachon said. Over 12 workers were killed after Cleveland sent federal troops to crush the strike, he said.

Cleveland's move to establish Labor Day as a federal holiday is seen by some historians as a way for him "to make peace" with the working class after that, Vachon said.

Bay Area American Flag

What do Americans do over Labor Day weekend?

For the three-day weekend created by Labor Day, travelers pack airports and highways for end-of-summer escapes, and backyard chefs prepare cookouts for family and friends.

Barbecuing has been a part of Labor Day celebrations from the start, said Robert F. Moss, food writer, culinary historian and author of "Barbecue: The History of an American Institution."

He said it was already such an entrenched tradition in the U.S. that when the labor movements developed in the late 19th century, it was natural to way to celebrate as large groups gathered. In the 20th century, the holiday's barbecues moved more toward gatherings of friends and family in backyards, he said.

"It still has a lot of that same communal sense, gathering around the grill, eating together," he said.

Vachon said that whether the origins of the labor movement are on one's mind while celebrating depends on whether they live somewhere with a large union presence.

In Chicago, a parade and festival are held over Labor Day weekend in what is now the Pullman neighborhood, home of the holiday's roots. Bob Reiter, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor, said the parade and festival they host brings in union members and their families from all over the area.

Lowe's Reports Quarterly Earnings That Beat Expectations

How has the labor movement evolved over the decades?

When Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, unions in the U.S. were largely contested and courts would often rule strikes illegal, leading to violent disputes, Vachon said. It wasn't until the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 that private sector employees were granted the right to join unions.

Later into the 20th century, states also began passing legislation to allow unionization in the public sector. But even today, not all states allow collective bargaining for public workers.

In recent years, Vachon said, there's been a resurgence in labor organizing, activism, interest and support.

"A lot of the millennial and Gen Z folks are coming into the labor market in a period that's not a lot different from that period in the 1880s where there was a lot of labor unrest," Vachon said. "Jobs just don't pay enough for people to achieve the American dream."

People travel through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas for Labor Day weekend 2023.

What's the connection between fashion and Labor Day?

The adage that one shouldn't wear white after Labor Day is a "rule" that's broken with very fashionable results, but where did it originate?

Fashion experts say it likely goes back to the Gilded Age — the same period in the late 1800s that spawned Labor Day. The cool, white frocks worn by wealthy New Yorkers during their summers in places such as Newport, Rhode Island, would be packed away on their end-of-summer return to the city with its dirt-packed streets.

Christy Crutsinger, a professor in merchandising and digital retailing at University of North Texas, heard the adage from generations of women in her family. But "the fashion world's not working that way anymore," she added.

"People think it, say it, but don't abide by it," she said.

With back-to-school shopping and a switch by many business people from a more relaxed summer dress code, fashion is on the mind of many around Labor Day, said Daniel James Cole, adjunct assistant professor in fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology and co-author of "The History of Modern Fashion."

The holiday, he said, "is kind of this hinge" between summertime dress and fun to going "back to more serious pursuits."

Safari history no longer visible in menu bar dropdown

Safari on Mac used to have a handy selectable list of recent sites visited just by clicking on History in the menu bar. This is no longer there. The only way to view history is to select "Show All History" or press Command-Y. While these are useful, they are not as handy for immediate use as the former dropdown right from the menu bar.

Is this a bug, a feature deliberately removed, or a setting of mine that's accidentally gotten changed? Not sure, but I wish I had it back. (I'm running Ventura 13.3.1.)

I still have a list of sites visited recently as well as from Earlier Today, Yesterday, etc. under the History menu. What do you have at Safari > Settings > General > Remove History Items?

Did you try a Safe Boot?

  • No History in Safari. I'm on a Mac Pro, running Mojave 10.14.6, using Safari 14.0.3, and as of last Friday, Safari has stopped maintaining a history. Hi, I went to check the setting there, and it was already on "Manually", which is what I assume it should be. But then when I went back to check the menubar, guess what? It's automagically working again! Odd.

Do you think just the mere opening of that Settings panel could have reset something? Anyway, thanks! :D

Edit: I did click on the "Manually" to look at the options, and then left it in the same place. Perhaps just clicking it somehow reset things.

Glad you got it working. It would not surprise me that by clicking on the Setting, it started working. Its amazing to see on these forums how the simple act of switching a setting off and on will reset a preference that gets stuck in an unknown state.

Not really sure on what the default settings is for this, my Remove History Items is set at 1 year, and not sure if it was something I changed in the past which could possibly of come from previous OS versions.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.
