When planning a trip to Massachusetts, your first thought is likely to visit the city of Boston. Of course, this is a top New England destination for tourists and residents alike, but you may also want to explore Western Massachusetts as well (or on a separate trip).

Western Massachusetts is home to the beautiful Berkshires, which boasts outdoor activities ranging from skiing and snowboarding in the winter, to leaf peeping, hiking, mountain biking, and zip lining when the weather is nicer. The region is filled with quaint towns to explore, with historic bed and breakfasts and luxury wellness resorts for lodging.

Read on for our favorite things to do in Western Massachusetts.

See Fall Foliage Along the Mohawk Trail

One of the best places to see fall foliage in Massachusetts is along the Mohawk Trail on Route 2, which has been known as the first official scenic road in New England since 1914. On this drive, you'll view scenery including the Berkshire Mountains, Mount Greylock, and the Bridge of Flowers . These directions  will help guide you along your drive.

Indulge in the Ultimate Spa Weekend at Canyon Ranch Lenox

Canyon Ranch Lenox , located in the Berkshires' town of Lenox, is a wellness resort that's been promising the ultimate relaxing spa weekend since 1989. While it comes with an expensive price tag, this is the type of all-inclusive experience that doesn't exist anywhere else in the area. The resort is in the former 1897 Bellefontaine Mansion, which has also functioned as a seminary and boarding school.

Included in your stay are all sorts of wellness experiences, from spa treatments to yoga classes, snowshoeing, and canoeing. You'll leave the Canyon Ranch Lenox feeling fully refreshed—and looking forward to your next visit.

Get Your Outdoor Adventuring in at the Mount Greylock State Reservation

Mount Greylock , the highest point in Massachusetts at nearly 3,500 feet, is where you'll want to go for all sorts of outdoor activities. Pick from hiking, camping, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, hunting, and more. If you plan on camping , it's $8 a night for Massachusetts residents and $10 for non-residents.

Take the Kids to Six Flags New England

Six Flags New England is the region's largest and most popular amusement park, and it's the oldest under the Six Flags name. Located in Agawam, west of Springfield, this theme park offers everything from roller coasters and a water park to shopping and dining. Single day tickets start at $53, with several packages and passes available.

Get Nostalgic at the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum

Even if you don't have kids, take a trip down memory lane at the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum in Springfield. The museum will take you through Geisel's life, while also offering guests fun activities like the Giant Marble Maze, Whoville with Ball Wall and Light Wall, and the Lorax Recycle Game.

Tickets are $13 for kids ages 3 to 7 and $25 for adults. It's recommended that you get yours in advance given that this has become quite the popular attraction for those visiting the Springfield area.

Take Photos at the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls

The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls has been curating beautiful floral scenes for more than 90 years. Initially started by the Shelburne Falls Area Women's Club, today it showcases a wide variety of flowers, plants, trees, and vines that are on display from early-April to late-October. What you'll see when you arrive depends on the time of year, but if you're looking for something in particular, check out the extensive list by time of year on the Bridge of Flowers website.

Go Skiing, Mountain Bike Riding, or White Water Rafting at the Berkshire East Mountain Resort

Another great destination for outdoor activities is the Berkshire East Mountain Resort in Charlemont. In the winter, you have your pick of options, including skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. When the weather gets warmer, you can ride at the Thunder Mountain Bike Park, test your fear of heights zip lining at the Aerial Adventure Park, or go on a white water rafting adventure.

The Tanglewood Music Center is home to a summer fellowship program for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where talented musicians come to study and practice. The campus is on 529 acres in Lenox, and what has become a popular activity for those visiting the area is Tanglewood's annual Festival of Contemporary Music . A Local’s Guide for Things to Do in Western MA: Pioneer Valley

  • A Local’s Guide for Things to Do in Western MA: Pioneer Valley - February 7, 2023

While there are many great things to do in Western MA, there’s a region that is extra special.

There is a small section in Western Massachusetts that I would describe as the ‘hidden gem’ of the Bay State.  The folks that did not grow up in this area know it as the Connecticut River Valley. But to the locals, it is known as the Pioneer Valley. Made up of the three counties of Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin, the Pioneer Valley is rich in diversity and culture, and filled with many places and activities to enjoy in every season.  The Pioneer Valley is more than just a place I grew up in. It is home.

I invite you to grab a cup of coffee, find a comfortable seat, sit back and relax as I take you on a tour through the many adventures to be had in Western Massachusetts.

Table of Contents

Things to Do in Western MA: Pioneer Valley

The ‘city life’ of hampden county, urban park adventures.

One of my favorite childhood memories I can recall is visiting Forest Park in Springfield with my grandparents.  I would enjoy feeding the ducks and geese, and exploring the ponds in the woods. The area offers many hiking trails, picnic areas, and a zoo with a variety of animals.  During the holidays, Forest Park features Bright Nights ; a festive splendor with countless displays of holiday lights that folks can enjoy without leaving the comfort of their car.

Museums, Casinos, and Entertainment, Oh My!

Looking for cultural and family friendly activities? The many museums located in Hampden County include the Springfield Science Museum, the World of Dr. Seuss Museum and Gardens, The Children’s Museum in Holyoke, Amelia Park Children’s Museum in Westfield and a variety of fine art museums. From concert performances at MGM Casino to hosting a child’s birthday party at the Basketball Hall of Fame, Hampden County has so much to offer its visitors.

Black and white antique police car at an antique show, one of the popular things to do in Western Massachusetts

If you are an antique collector, be sure to keep your eyes (and ears) open for when the Brimfield Antique Flea Market opens up.  This large flea market attracts visitors from all over New England.  This amazing event is hosted for an entire weekend in May, July, and September because it is impossible to go through the entire area in just one weekend.

New England Fairs

Across the Connecticut River heading into the towns of West Springfield and Agawam, the area is brought to life when the Eastern States Exposition comes to town.  Dubbed the “Big E” , these fairgrounds host carnival rides, vendors from all over the world, demonstrations, concerts and various events, and lets not forget about the overwhelming variety of delicious foods.  From cream puffs to deep fried Oreos, from the Maine baked potato to the buttered lobster roll, one certainly needs a hardy appetite before attending the Big E.  There is plenty to ‘fill’ one’s plate with here in Hampden County.

People walking around and enjoying a fair in Western MA. Some of the fair stands say, \"Hoops\" and \"Water Gun.\"

The Rural and Farming Communities of Hampshire County

Hiking, biking, and a whole lotta food.

The towns here offer a wide variety of adventures, especially for the outdoor enthusiast. One unique mountain I love hiking through is the Mount Tom State Reservation . Extending through the towns of Holyoke and Easthampton, Mt. Tom offers several miles of beautiful forested trails.  Activities can include watching sunsets by the towers, hiking along Bray Lake, exploring through the New England Trail (NET) and Metacomet-Monadnock Trail (M-M Trail), and hosting cookouts in designated picnic spots.

Fall foliage forests surrounding a serene lake under a blue sky with a few fluffy clouds in scenic Western Massachusetts Pioneer Valley.

During the Western MA summer, I make sure I head down the west side of the mountain into Easthampton to get myself a strawberry ice cream cone at Mt. Tom Homemade Ice Cream Shop, and enjoy it while walking along the boardwalk next to Nashawannuck Pond.

Spending the majority of my time outdoors, I enjoy viewing wildlife along the trails of the Mass Audubon’s Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, or kayaking along the Connecticut River.  The Oxbow in Northampton is another popular spot for canoeing or kayaking.  Simply let go and relax while drifting along in a unique U-shaped body of water off the Connecticut River.

If you are not much of a kayaker, but you enjoy a good bike ride, take a leisurely stroll down one of the many bike paths that meander throughout Hampshire County.  Enjoy many sights and scenic landscapes with family or friends from any of these bike paths: the Manhan Rail Trail in Easthampton; the Norwottuck Rail Trail in Hadley , Amherst and Belchertown; and the Northampton Bikeway in Northampton , Florence and Leeds which will take you straight through Look Park.  Look Park offers family picnics, a zoo, firework displays to celebrate July 4 th , and summertime train rides throughout the park.

Aerial view of a hilly landscape with greenery in the Pioneer Valley of Western MA.

If I want a more challenging adventure, I will plan a Mount Holyoke Range traverse.  Also known as the Seven Sisters, the Mount Holyoke Range begins as part of the NET that starts in Hadley and finishes in Amherst.  This day hike takes me through a variety of hardwood and hemlock woodlands with some strenuous scrambles over many geologic structures.  Be sure to have plenty of water and snacks to enjoy this journey.

After a long day of hiking, I will stop by Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery for lunch, or a slice of their chocolate cream pie.  Barstow’s Bakery is located at Longview Farm along Rt. 47 in Hadley, and they are just one of many dairy farms that make up the farming community in Western Mass.  From homemade ice cream enjoyed at Flayvors of Cook Farm during the summer to challenging your nerves on a hunted hayride at McCray’s Farm in the fall, there is so much to enjoy while visiting a neighboring farm.  Don’t forget to stop by a roadside stand to buy fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and corn, among many other varieties, for farm-fresh meals to prepare at home.

White wooden sign that says \"Open\" and lists sweet corn, cut flowers, peppers, broccoli, zucchini, and cucumbers. The sign is hanging from a red farm stand with flowers at a popular farm in Western MA Pioneer Valley

Looking for a ‘sweeter’ farm fresh product?  How does fresh maple syrup sound? Don’t go without visiting a sugarhouse during the sugaring season. North Hadley Sugar Shack is just one of many sugarhouses to visit and pick up a bottle of their fresh maple syrup.

One farm field along Rt. 47 attracts hundreds of visitors every year at the largest outdoor flea market.  From late April to early November, visitors can gaze upon the several tables filled with unique treasures, antiques, gardening plants and food truck vendors.

Shopping in NoHo

If the weather forces you to stay indoors, take a drive over to Northampton and venture through the many shops and boutiques at Thornes Marketplace. Amanouz Café, Fitzwilly’s, Eastside Bar and Grill, and Bela are just some of the multitude of restaurants (and coffee shops !) located in Downtown Northampton if one was looking for ethnicity to their cuisine.  From the farm towns to the hill towns of Western Mass, boredom is not something one will find.

Shops line the side of a street where cars are parked under a blue cloudy sky in Western Massachusetts

The Rural and Somewhat Remote Areas of Franklin County

Festivals are the best-of-alls.

From shopping at Kringle Candle in Bernardston to walking along the canal at the Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls, there is an array of activities to enjoy in Franklin County. Held on the grounds of Greenfield Community College is the annul Green River Festival .  The Green River Festival is a summer event held for one weekend every July hosting music concerts, local food, a craft fair, and a variety of activities that include a nighttime hot air balloon glow.  A fantastic summer event indeed!

If you enjoy fall festivals, my favorite one to attend is the North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival.   This festival is a perfect combination of a handmade craft fair and a farmers market.  They host local cuisines from around Western Mass, provide energy saving demonstrations, and entertain visitors with live music.  The unique qualities about this festival if that the entire area is run on solar power energy!  They have minimal trash reciprocals because they compost almost all of the waste.  Hosted for only one weekend, by the end of their festivities they would have collected approximately 3 bags of trash.  Wow!  Not only do I love attending this festival every year, but also it has become a tradition to attend among my family members.

Anything But Average Village

Taking my travels west along the Mohawk Trail on Rt. 2, I love visiting the Village of Shelburne Falls.  The first place I visit is Boswell’s Books.  I love venturing through small local bookstores, especially the ones that have a friendly feline waiting to greet me when I visit.  Okay, so I don’t know many or any bookstores that have resident cats, but this one certainly does. Even if I am not in the mood to purchase any books, I always leave Boswell’s with at least one purchase.

Pink and purple flowers in a bush, with a river in the background in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts

As I make my way down Bridge Street I take a slight turn to walk across the oh-so-beautiful Bridge of Flowers.  Although the bridge is closed during the winter, during spring, summer and fall there are a wide variety of beautiful flowers lining up each side of the footbridge.  Personally, my favorite time of the year to walk across the Bridge of Flowers is mid August when the sunflowers have bloomed.  Sunflowers are my absolute favorite flower, and I just love the way they brighten up the landscape.

A bridge made of stone stretches over a body of water. Behind the bridge is a small hill covered in forestry, under a blue cloudy sky in Western Massachusetts

Hungry? There are many restaurants and cafés that will be sure to provide a little variation to your appetite.  Enjoy a meal at the West End Pub overlooking the Deerfield River, or a unique fare at the Blue Rock Restaurant, or a heartwarming cappuccino at Mocha Maya’s Coffee House.

The Great Outdoors

Looking for a rugged adventure in Franklin County?  Book a white water rafting trip with Zoar Outdoor Adventures .  When I booked my first trip, I was impressed at the well-kept schedule they provide to ensure everyone has an unforgettable time.  At the end of the adventure, all of the visitors that day gathered around to enjoy a delicious barbeque cookout together.

Serene road covered in dead leaves surrounded by trees with fall foliage in the Pioneer Valley of Western MA

Not much of a white water rafter?  Then enjoy a hike along the trails of the Mohawk Trail State Forest.  Explore mountain ridges, gorges, and enchanting woodlands that decorate the landscape.  The most popular times to visit the forest are during the fall season.  The foliage in this region is simply breathtaking!  There are more moderate to easy trails in the forest that are perfect for snowshoeing during the winter months. There is plenty to enjoy in the Franklin County region of the Pioneer Valley in every season.

Small Valley, Endless Adventures

Whew! What an adventure!  There is so much to do here in the Pioneer Valley, and there is still so much that I have not mentioned or have yet to enjoy myself.  After a long week spent at work, it’s nice to spend a Friday evening planning my weekend activities, and there is much to choose from.  When my biggest decision of the day is trying to figure out which restaurant to go out to eat, that is when I know I am enjoying myself.

If you are entering Massachusetts from Vermont, be sure to look for the small green sign on the southbound lane of I-91 that reads “Welcome to the Pioneer Valley”.  It would not be much of a special place if there were no welcome sign waiting to greet you as you entered.

There are so many fun things to do in Western MA and Hampshire County, known as “the other side of Massachusetts”. While Boston is a fabulous city , there’s a lot happening on the other side of the state, too. I find that I’m drawn to the smaller towns that have their own unique finds and charming character. How about you?

Hampshire County is a collection of small towns in western Massachusetts, all with their own character and sense of community. Add a few outdoor adventures and intriguing discoveries, and you’ve got yourself the perfect getaway to this less frequented side of the state. Looking for western Massachusetts attractions? Things to do in Western MA

While I covered a lot of ground in a couple of days, this is merely a small sampling of the interesting places in Hampshire County. As this region is within driving distance of my home in Toronto, I hope to make it back at some point in the future to explore even more. In this Massachusetts travel guide, I’m going to show you the best things to do in:

  • Easthampton
  • Northampton
  • Williamsburg
  • And where to stay in Northampton, along with the best restaurants in Northampton

Table of Contents

Where to Stay in Western MA: The Historic Hotel Northampton

If you’re visiting western Massachusetts and Hampshire County, the Hotel Northampton is the ideal place to call home. It’s a historic hotel right in the middle of town, so you can walk everywhere.

Hotel Northampton

The hotel is luxurious with elegant rooms and common spaces. We were warmly greeted upon our arrival and felt comfortable throughout our stay. I had a cozy and restful night’s sleep, which allowed for days worth of adventures in Hampshire County.

Hotel Northampton

There was complimentary Wi-Fi, parking, and a continental breakfast. I highly recommend that you stay at Hotel Northampton. Be sure to book your stay at Hotel Northampton , and you can also check rates on Tripadvisor while browsing more reviews and photos.

If you’d like to compare prices and locations of other hotels and vacation rentals in Northampton and beyond, here’s a convenient map that makes it really easy to find the best places to stay.

Getting Around Western MA

If you’d like to check out all of the best things to do in western MA, you likely need to have a car. This is a road trip destination! While I drove my car down from Canada, you can always rent a car for the trip. Compare car rental rates here so you can find the best deal.

Things to Do in Western MA: Amherst, MA

Amherst is the highest populated town in Hampshire County (around 37,000 people). Much like the rest of Hampshire County, Amherst is known for its vibrant community spirit, its love for the arts and books, the local food scene, and its beautiful nature.

Amherst is an intellectual place with three colleges: Amherst College, UMass Amherst, and Hampshire College. As a lively college town, you can expect to find late night restaurants and cafes, live music, and tolerant outlooks. It’s also the home of famous poet, Emily Dickinson (you can check out the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, too!).

If you’re seeking fun things to do in Western MA, don’t miss a stop in Amherst. Here are a few things to do when you visit the idyllic New England town of Amherst, Massachusetts.

Hike to the Summit of Mount Holyoke

Things to do in western MA: Hike to Mount Holyoke

Hiking is one of the most fun activities in Western MA, and Hampshire County is blessed with untouched nature. There are ample opportunities to go out and explore. When you stay in Northampton, you’re just moments away from miles of hiking trails and spectacular scenery. Amherst is one of those awesome places to go in Western MA with glorious natural spaces.

While there are several bases to start memorable day hikes, like Mount Holyoke Range State Park and Mount Tom State Reservation , we chose to venture out to Skinner State Park . From there, we climbed to the summit of Mount Holyoke for one of the most beautiful views I’ve seen in a long time.

Halfway Trail to Summit - Skinner State Park

As we were teetering on the brink of rain and only had a limited amount of time to see everything, I chose to take the Halfway Trail to the Mt Holyoke Summit. You can hike right from the bottom or start about halfway up the mountain. Regardless, you’ll get a workout as there’s quite an incline to the top.

visit western massachusetts

To park at this site, it costs $5 for MA locals or $20 for anyone out of state. It’s the same parking rate no matter where you leave your car within the state park boundaries. If you want the rewarding view without much effort, you can actually drive to the top of the summit as there’s a small parking lot up there.

visit western massachusetts

I thought the hike was completely worth it as I love spending time in nature. Plus, there were really interesting rock formations along the way. At the top of Mount Holyoke, enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area. There’s also the sprawling summit house, but it’s closed for renovations when I visited. I believe it is now open, but only seasonally.

Mount Holyoke summit

It’s part of the New England Trail , which extends 215 miles. If you visit Skinner State Park between mid-September and November, you may have the opportunity to see some hawks during the annual hawk migration from the top of Mount Holyoke. I’d love to return during the fall to witness hundreds of soaring birds of prey overhead. This hike is one of the best things to do in Western MA by far.

Atkins Farms

Fun things to do in western MA: Atkins Farms

Atkins Farms is a locally owned market in Amherst, MA. If you’re looking to pick up some farm fresh produce or locally made products, Atkins Farms is a great place to do so. They started as an apple farm back in 1887 and they’ve expanded over the years to a huge market space.

Atkins Farms

They’re super eco-friendly and include many sustainable practices in their business. For instance, they use renewable energy like solar power, they practice composting and recycling, and they also buy local wherever possible.

Fun Things to Do in Western MA: Atkins Farms

At Atkins Farms, you can find farm fresh produce, baked goods, specialty foods, seasonal items, maple syrup, a deli, a candy shop, beer and wine, and even a sushi bar. When you’re in Amherst, feel free to do some grocery shopping here or pop in to browse the local specialties.

More Things to See and Do in Amherst

If you’re looking for what to do in Western Mass and Amherst, here are some more suggestions. I didn’t get the chance to visit any of these spots, but perhaps they’ll be intriguing to you. Feel free to add them to your Western MA travel itinerary and let me know what you think!

  • Go swimming at Puffer’s Pond
  • Shop at the Amherst Farmer’s Market (every Saturday from April to November)
  • Watch a movie at the independent, non-profit theater and arts center, Amherst Cinema
  • Stop for a coffee or beverage at Amherst Coffee, inside the Amherst Cinema building

What to Do in Western Mass: Easthampton, MA

Visit Easthampton, Massachusetts

Easthampton is a town that’s revitalizing itself throughout recent years, transforming from an old mill town to a center for the arts. Old factory buildings are being repurposed as places for creatives to make things like pottery and works of art.

You’ll also find great restaurants, microbreweries, and some of the top places of interest in Massachusetts. There are great hiking trails and waterways for kayaking. Easthampton was once considered to be an “up-and-coming” place to visit, but it’s really come into its own and more than ready for you to visit. Here are my top pics for attractions in Easthampton, Massaschuetts.

Things to Do in Western MA: Community Space at Mill 180 Park

Mill 180 Park

Mill 180 Park is one of the most unique community spaces I’ve ever encountered. It’s an urban park that’s entirely indoors. Spanning the floor of a century old mill building, Mill 180 Park welcomes anyone to step inside and spend time there. Unlike other parks, it’s a quiet sanctuary that can be enjoyed no matter what the weather is like outdoors.

Fun Things to Do in Western MA: Mill 180 Park

There are many spaces to mingle with friends, both old and new. You can spend peaceful moments alone or time with family members of all ages. There are games, like cornhole or checkers. Mill 180 Park has community events, like yoga classes, live speakers, or musical performances. Art hangs from the walls and ceilings.

Dine at Mill 180 Park

Dine at Mill 180 Park - Park to Table Concept - Hydroponics

Most notably, Mill 180 Park uses hydroponics to grow fresh food all year long. These plants serve both as greenery for the park and double as ingredients for the food served there. They have innovative ways of growing vegetables without soil or the sun – it’s quite amazing. All year long, they grow and harvest lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, kale, swiss chard, and herbs.

Dine at Mill 180 Park - Park to Table Concept - Hydroponics

This “park-to-table” concept features meals created from the plants grown on site, as well as other local specialties. Everything is sold for a reasonable price so everyone can access the food, regardless of income. If there is an abundance of one particular plant, it is sold directly to residents at an affordable rate or donated to a local food bank.

Dine at Mill 180 Park - Park to Table Concept - Hydroponics

While the meals aren’t strictly vegan, there are many vegan selections of soups, sandwiches, salads, and snacks. There’s coffee from a local company, beer from nearby craft breweries, and cocktails with a house-made simple syrup.

Fun Things to Do in Western MA: Mill 180 Park - Parktails

The concept behind Mill 180 Park is cutting edge and can be implemented in any city. Food can be grown locally and affordably for everyone to enjoy. Furthermore, it brings the community together and people can get to know one another in a beautiful space. One of the best things to do in Western MA is to pop by Mill 180 Park to enjoy the community space and a delicious meal.

Abandoned Building Brewery

Abandoned Building Brewery

Hampshire County has dozens of craft breweries and I was able to sample some local brews during my stay. Around the corner from Mill 180 Park in Easthampton (in the same building!), pay a trip to Abandoned Building Brewery. They’ve got a large selection of ales suitable for all tastes, including seasonal varieties.

Abandoned Building Brewery

I wanted to try an assortment of beers, so I opted for a beer flight. My personal favorite was the Blue Barn Saison, based on a Belgian classic pilsner. You can find their beers at the brewery, as well as numerous establishments in Hampshire County and all over Massachusetts. One of the top things to do in Western Ma is sample the local brews, and Abandoned Building Brewery is one you need to check out.

More Things to Do in Easthampton

While Mill 180 Park and Abandoned Building Brewery both deserve a space on your list of Western Mass attractions, here are even more suggestions for a memorable trip.

  • Go for a walk or bike ride on the Manhan Rail Trail that connects Easthampton and Northampton
  • Visit Art in the Orchard , an outdoor sculpture garden through fruit orchards
  • Go kayaking and nature watching at Nashawannuck Pond

Visit Hampshire County: Northampton, MA

Smith College Museum of Art

Have you ever travelled somewhere and immediately felt a sense of belonging? It seemed like everywhere we went, people were eager to strike up a conversation and recommend spots for us to check out. I got the impression that the locals were not only friendly, but there was an overwhelming aura of togetherness. It’s one of the best places to go when you visit Western Massachusetts.

Northampton is very liberal and has  a large LGBT community . Overall, Hampshire County is a very welcoming and accepting place. Here are some of the best things to do in Western MA, specifically in the town of Northampton.

Smith College Museum of Art

Fun things to do in Western MA: Smith College Museum of Art

I’m a massive fan of the arts, and there are a variety of creative outlets and ways to appreciate art in Hampshire County. A trip to the Smith College Museum of Art is one of the most amazing things to do in Western MA for fans of art and culture.

Fun things to do in Western MA: Smith College Museum of Art

There are four floors of galleries featuring a portion of their permanent collection, as well as rotating special exhibits. There are collections of modern art, art from the ancient world, African art, Asian art, a collection of works on paper, and more.

Smith College Museum of Art Benches

At Smith College Museum of Art, some of the art is fully functional and used regularly by visitors. For instance, there are artist designed benches throughout the museum. When you stop to rest or admire paintings or sculptures in a seated position, you’ll be sitting on one-of-a-kind benches.

Artist Designed Restrooms

Smith College Museum of Art Bathrooms

Next, the most surprising feature at Smith College Museum of Art were the artist-designed restrooms. Yes, restrooms! These are the fanciest and most captivating bathrooms I’ve ever seen (a sentence I wasn’t sure I’d ever write!). They are permanent works of art, and you’re welcome to check out both of them.

Smith College Museum of Art Bathrooms

If you’re visiting the men’s restroom as a lady (and vice versa), it’s a good idea to knock first out of courtesy for those who may be using them. I think this is the first time I’ve admired and taken pictures of the inside of a public restroom.

Discover the Street Art in Northampton

Things to do in Western MA: Street art in Northampton

Walking around the streets of Northampton, you can observe street art and murals in interesting places. All over town, we noticed sidewalks, benches, electricity boxes, and the sides of buildings painted in creative ways.

Street art in Northampton MA

You’ll be able to discover public art and street art all over town, especially on Main Street. The town itself is a living, breathing work of art. Wander around town and discover it for yourself.

Shop at Small Local Businesses on Main Street

Things to do in Northampton MA

There are no shortage of local, small businesses in Northampton with lots of unique finds. There are bookshops, gift shops, musical instrument stores, clothing stores, and so much more. You can also alternate popping into stores with sipping coffee at local cafes.

Things to do in Northampton MA

I found some really cute casual shoes in one shop that have a lime stitched into one and a coconut stitched into the other. Another shop’s storefront window caught my eye because there were so many cat themed things for sale. Finding unique gifts is one of the best things to do in Western MA and Northampton has loads of one-of-a-kind shopping experiences.

Northampton Brewery

Northampton Brewery

The rooftop bar at Northampton Brewery is not to be missed. Savor pints on the patio at this popular brewpub. For something a little different, I ordered the Pomona, a sour ale. While you’re at it, take some cans of beer to go.

Northampton Brewery

If you love craft breweries (I do, as you can tell, from the brewery mentions in this blog post!), you shouldn’t miss Northampton Brewery. It’s a favorite among the locals and visitors alike.

More Things to Do in Northampton

There are so many things to do in Northampton beyond the experiences I had. Feel free to add any of these to your list if you have more time in the area:

  • The Botanic Garden of Smith College has native New England plants and trees, plus a conservatory & greenhouses.
  • Northampton has farmers markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • Ye Ol’ Watering Hole has a Beer Can Museum with over 4000 cans lining the walls.

Places to Go in Western MA: Williamsburg

Williamsburg is a tiny, rural town (population approximately 2400) at the base of the Berkshires. In 1874, this prosperous mill town experienced a tragedy when a reservoir burst and swept away many businesses, mills, and homes. 139 people died in this disastrous event.

Nowadays, Williamsburg features a picturesque main street and many buildings with a Greek revival style of architecture. There’s a lively spirit in this community where its residents not only take great pride in living there, but also strive to help one another through volunteering initiatives. I went to Williamsburg to visit Snow Farm, one of the most amazing arts and crafts retreats I’ve ever seen.

Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program

Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program

Snow Farm is an artistic retreat in a rural setting. Guests participate in an artistic discipline of their choice, even if they’re completely new to it. Snow Farm is a nonprofit organization with classes led by experts, allowing anyone to attempt or perfect any craft.

Fun Things to Do in Western MA: Snow Farm

When I visited Hampshire County, I took a tour of the Snow Farm grounds, learning a little bit about each class. Generally, attendees stay in the dorms for a few days, meeting new people and even making long term friendships.

Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program

There are a wide variety of workshops, including ceramics, mosaics, painting, fibre arts, glassblowing, woodworking, welding, metal smithing, flameworking, and more. I’d love to return someday to take a class and learn a new craft or skill.

More Things to Do in Williamsburg

I must admit that I didn’t get to fully experience Williamsburg with my trip to Snow Farm. When I return someday, I’d love to check out the following:

  • Go hiking at Petticoat Hill up to the Petticoat Hill Summit.
  • Visit the Graves Farm Wildlife Sanctuary with its two loop trails and wildlife viewing opportunities
  • Take a trip to the quaint Williamsburg General Store on Main Street.

Vegan Eats in Northampton, MA

Northampton, Massachusetts is a super vegan-friendly city in Western MA. If you’re searching for vegan eats in Hampshire County, you won’t have any issues in Northampton. Here are my recommended restaurants in Northampton that offer plant-based, vegan, and vegetarian options.

Haymarket Cafe

Haymarket Cafe in Northampton

For lunch, dinner, or dessert, hop over to Haymarket Cafe in Northampton. It’s a vegetarian cafe with many vegan options clearly marked. There’s a huge glass case full of vegan desserts, too.

Haymarket Cafe in Northampton

I ordered the tempeh burger with the pina colada smoothie. Personally, I can’t seem to get enough tempeh, so I was really pleased with this choice. I only wish I could have returned for a second or third meal here. The other dish featured in the above photo is the “Pasta a La Norma” with roasted tomato, eggplant, and spicy pepper.

Bueno Y Sano

Bueno Y Sano

Mexican food is generally a safe bet for vegan options, but this restaurant had several vegan-friendly tacos and burritos. I ordered both a seitan taco and a tofu taco, which also came stuffed with black beans, veggies, and salsa.

Bueno Y Sano

There was an additional salsa and hot sauce bar where you could make your meal as spicy as you wanted. The portions were huge! Bring your appetite.

Sweeties Fine Chocolate & Confections

Sweeties Fine Chocolate & Confections

Walking around Northampton, I was drawn to a sign in their shop window stating that there were vegan options inside. Sweeties has the biggest selection of vegan chocolate that I’ve ever seen at a chocolate shop.

Sweeties Fine Chocolate & Confections

There were two whole shelves of dairy-free chocolates of all different flavours. I happily ordered a box of chocolates here. There were also so many vegan candies that ones with dairy in them were specially labelled as “not vegan”, being in the minority. I love that.

Glazed Doughnut Shop

Glazed Doughnut Shop

Back when I visited Northampton, I couldn’t resist a trip to the Glazed Doughnut Shop. Unfortunately, their location in Northampton has since closed, but they still have a donut shop in Amherst. Make sure to make a stop when you’re visiting Amherst, MA.

Glazed Doughnut Shop

There were several vegan donuts, all clearly marked. In fact, we bought the “day old” donuts for only $1 a piece! Fruity pebble donuts? Yes, please!

10 Fantastic Things To Do In Western Massachusetts This Week

From museums dedicated to butterflies and basketball to the longest dual zipline in America, Western Massachusetts offers so much from the Berkshires and beyond!

Ameera Hammouda

From visiting the picturesque Berkshires to a pitstop for Indian food Jerry Seinfeld style , Western Massachusetts offers an abundance of splendid offerings. It’s a lovely place for those who appreciate the outdoors. There are dozens of storybook towns in the Berkshires and beyond , such as Lenox, Stockbridge, and Deerfield.

Before we jump into our favorite things to do in Western Massachusetts , let’s clear the air on a common misconception!

What is Western Massachusetts?

western massachusetts map

Many, even Bostonians, believe Western Massachusetts to be synonymous with the Berkshires. However, the Berkshires is only a part of Western Massachusetts. This Western part of the state includes many other towns outside of the Berkshires such as Springfield and Amherst .

The map of Western Massachusetts below shows the dozens of other towns in the region in addition to the seven Berkshires towns , which we highlight later. The farther west you get from Boston, the more rural the area becomes, and then eventually you’ll find yourself in upstate New York!

What are the Berkshires?

massachusetts map by country

The Berkshires are a group of seven towns in Western Massachusetts- Stockbridge, Lenox, Lee, Pittsfield, North Adams, Great Barrington, and Williamstown . The towns reside in some of the world’s oldest mountains, dating back over 500 million years! These old, but mighty, mountains are great for fall foliage, skiing, and hiking!

Best things to do in Western Massachusetts

Western Massachusetts begins with a town called Ware, Massachusetts which is about 90 minutes from Boston . Then it extends all the way to Mount Washington, Williamstown, and Stockbridge to name a few. Each region of Western Massachusetts offers something unique to explore. Below are a few of our favorite thing to do in this part of the state!

1. Stay at the historic Red Lion Inn

9. Catch a comedy show in Springfield

Fun Things To Do In Western Massachusetts

There’s more to Massachusetts than Boston. Get to know the “other side of Massachusetts” with this list of fun things to do in Western MA.

**A big thank you to Visit Hampshire County for arranging fun itineraries during both of our visits! Although they provided free entrance to attractions and paid for some of our meals, as always, all opinions are our own.**

Fun Things To Do In Western MA

We’ll admit that we didn’t know much about the other side of Massachusetts. Before our first visit to the area with our friend Brianne of A Traveling Life , we started researching Hampshire County and we realized there is quiet a bit to do!

Boston is known for its hustle and bustle, but Western Massachusetts offers fun attractions while still having small town charm. We enjoyed our time in Western MA so much that we’ve since returned and enjoyed even more in the area.

So if you’re looking for day trips in Massachusetts outside of the big city, we recommend driving through Hampshire County. Below we’ve listed out our favorite cities and attractions.

Things To Do In Northampton MA

This city is known for its history, culture, and cute shopping area, so there are plenty of things to do in Northampton. We especially loved the  Smith College Museum of Art . It is widely recognized as one of the leading academic museums in the country.

With an expanding collection, the museum’s mission is to cultivate inquiry and reflection by connecting people to art, ideas and each other. During our second visit to the art museum (it’s so good that we wanted to visit again), they had a great new exhibit called Black Refractions which highlighted the works of various artists of African descent from the Studio Museum in Harlem.

And interestingly enough, something visitors should definitely not miss at the museum are the public bathrooms on the lower level directly adjacent to the exhibition gallery. Even they have been beautifully designed as functional art.

Smith College Museum of Art is one of the best things to do in Western MA

Another part of Smith College that we recommend you visit is the Lyman Plant House and Conservatory . It’s main greenhouses date back to 1895, and they house 3,000 species of plants. Entrance to the conservatory is free although they suggest a $2 donation.

Beautiful flowers at the Lyman Plant House and Conservatory

One of the best things to do in Western MA is to walk along Northampton’s Main Street. The shops there have fun merchandise and the storefronts are cute. We even saw some murals as we explored the area.

The History of Women in Northampton Mural

If you’re wondering where to eat in Northampton, we have a few recommendations. The first is The Dirty Truth . This fun beer hall has some really delicious food options.

During our visit we had a Mezze Plate for an appetizer, which had hummus, roasted red pepper, marinated artichoke, olives, pickles, and crackers. For our main meal we had the Mac & Cheese which was made with cavatappi pasta and had a cheddar-brie sauce mixed with some panko bread crumbs. We also added bacon to it because… why not? For dessert we had Beer Doughnuts. All of the food was great and our waitress was awesome too; she took the time to explain specials and checked on us often.

Another fun place to eat in Northampton is Filos Greek Taverna . The decor inside is fun and you feel like you’ve been transported to Greece! We really liked the Traditional Gyro Meat Wrap we ordered that came with sliced gyro meat, red onion, tomato, fried potato, tzatziki, and chopped parsley, rolled up in a hot pita.

A third restaurant option in Northampton that we recommend is Bueno Y Sano . This Mexican restaurant has some of the biggest burritos we’ve ever seen! We ordered chips and guac to start, and then had a Beef Chili Burrito and two Black Been Tacos. We don’t know how we managed to walk out of there, because we were so stuffed!

Things To Do In Florence MA

One of the most fun things to do in Western MA is in the village of Florence. Artifact Cider Project is doing something revolutionary with their tasty ciders! Using only local fruit from within 100 miles, they are truly mapping their own way as a cidery.

We hadn’t really tried too many ciders before, but after visiting Artifact’s taproom and having a flight, we have a whole new appreciation for the tasty beverage. When you visit, ask for John. He really knows his stuff and took the time to explain how their ciders are made and offered great recommendations based on the types of drinks we usually have.

A great place to eat in Florence is the Miss Florence Diner . Open since 1941 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, this unique restaurant is inside a train diner! Complete with counter and stools and even mini jukeboxes at each table, you truly feel like you’re eating at an old school diner.

During our visit we had a BLT Sandwich with crispy bacon, sliced tomato and fresh lettuce. We also had a Philly Steak and Cheese Sub with lean shaved steak, grilled onions, peppers and mushrooms, served on a grilled grinder roll and covered with Miss Flo’s special cheese sauce. Yum!

Another foodie recommendation is the Florence Pie Bar . This small cafe makes sweet and savory handmade pies whole and by the slice. Many people recommended we get a slice of pie from there before the end of our trip to Western MA, so we had pretty high expectations.

They did not disappoint! We had a slice of Winter Fruit Pie that had apple, pear, cranberry, and fig. The flavors were incredible!

Things To Do In Amherst MA

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Western MA with kids, or just like donuts, we recommend going to  Atkins Farms . They have a lot of great food items, but what they’re best known for is their cider donuts. We thought they were fantastic!

Another thing to do in Amherst is visit the Emily Dickinson Museum which is actually in her old home. Unfortunately it was closed on the day that we visited, but we would have loved to learn more about this incredible poet.

It’s also nice to simply walk around Amherst and admire the architecture and some of the shops that they have in town. There were a lot of cute book stores and beautiful churches.

Another of the best things to do in Western MA is to visit the Yiddish Book Center . Even if you aren’t Jewish, this place is amazing with so much historic value. It all came about when one man wanted to save Yiddish books that were being thrown away by American-born Jews unable to read the language of their Yiddish-speaking parents and grandparents.

To date, the center has saved over 1.5 million Yiddish books from around the world (and they receive more daily). They are also creating digital scans of the books so they are preserved for future generations. The center is a true testament of the love someone can have for their culture.

There are also artifacts throughout the center which we found very interesting, like an old printing press. During our visit, they also had a special exhibit called “A Shtetl In The Sun” which were photographs taken by Andy Sweet of the large elderly Jewish population that resided in Miami’s South Beach during the 1970s.

Things To Do In Easthampton MA

We think one of the coolest things to do in Western MA, especially if the weather outside isn’t great, is visiting Mill 180 Park . This indoor park is truly revolutionary! They bring the outdoors in, with lovely green spaces that you can enjoy as a group or in quiet solitude.

Visitors will find hydroponically-grown plants that not only add to the aesthetics, but are also used at the cafe to create the freshest dishes. The park is in a restored mill, and they’ve used the space wonderfully with play areas for kids and also little nooks for curling up with a good book.

Finding a peaceful retreat at Mill 180 Park is one of the best things to do in Western MA

Another cool converted mill building in Easthampton is Eastworks . Here, you’ll find commercial businesses, offices, artists studios, and even apartment lofts. We took a stroll along the different floors and were surprised at how many different businesses we saw.

Things To Do In Williamsburg MA

If you’d like to get your creative juices flowing, visit Snow Farm in Williamsburg. This once working farm is now home to studios and living areas where anyone can learn all kinds of crafts like glass blowing, metalworking, ceramics, and welding (to name a few). This is one of the few craft programs in the country that is open to beginners.

They offer various workshops, from two to five days, and students can stay on the property and even have their meals included with their stay. The two week program that they have for teens is especially awe inspiring as it’s almost equivalent to a college semester and the teens are able to show off their works at the end of the program.

Guests that visit Snow Farm in November also get to do some great shopping! Pieces from across the region from over 200 craftspeople are sent to Snow Farm so guests can do some early holiday shopping. You can also try blowing your own glass ornament!

Where To Stay In Hampshire County MA

As you’re exploring Western Massachusetts, there are a few options for where to stay but these are the ones we recommend. If you’re staying in Northampton we suggest staying at The Hotel Northampton . It’s right in the center of town, with great amenities and two restaurants.

One of the two queen beds in our Residential Suite at The Hotel Northampton

If you’d like to stay a bit further north in Amherst, we recommend the  Holiday Inn Express & Suites Amherst-Hadley . The hotel is in a great location, with fast WiFi and complimentary breakfast. And comfy beds!

Another place to stay in Western MA that is pretty unique is the Starlight Llama Bed and Breakfast . It’s a completely off-the-grid B&B and llama farm!

Look like a nice trip and pictures you captured in your post! Such a awesome post! Thank you so much for sharing it. Keep posting!

History, culture and cute shopping area has totally sold me on Northhampton. The Smith College Museum of art, although not a place I’d normally visit, seems to be really cool! I love how they’ve done the art in the restrooms, especially the sink. So cool! Also, ConVino’s wine collection, gnochi and cheesecake look appetising! Thanks for this informational post.

The indoor park seems like so much fun. It seems quite well done. I even like the sound of Smith College Museum of Art. There seems so much of talent there. I definitely dig those wash basins and agree with you that they are pretty. Seems like a fun place – Western MA.

Seems like there are lots of options for getaways to MA. Atkins Farm looks like something my daughter would enjoy.

Wouldn’t mind trying those cider donuts at Atkins Farm. Looks a really interesting area, we visited Boston for the first time last September but went south to Rhode Island. Wouldn’t mind going back this Autumn and heading west this time.

Looks like Buddy is enjoying his cider donut! I’m a donut fan too. High five! The Art scene and the donuts are enough to drag me to West MA! The ConVino Bar looks like a fun place to visit as well!

love the way you described about your trip, specially love your taken images which showing you enjoyed a lot in the whole trip. Thanks for sharing about western ma, next week i am too going there.

The indoor park concept sound so good, bringing nature in! Plenty of scope to enjoy during rains too. I would like to blow my own glass ornament. Great activity. The tip on where to stay is useful.

So man amazing sights and experiences in Western MA. Each seems to be offbeat and unique in its own right. I am really fascinated by the Smith College Museum of Art. The fact that the bathrooms have been done up so tastefully and with such lovely artwork is amazing. Another unique place I would love to visit is the Mill 180 park. It looks so beautiful.

It is a comprehensive guide to Western MA. So many things to do . I particulalrly liked the concept of indoor park and also the meditating garden elf. 🙂 The Bathroom just reinforces that you are in a centre for art! I think getting craftspeople is a masterstroke to keep the guests happy and engaged.

I had no idea there were so many activities and historical sites in Western MA. The cider donuts are calling to me. And, you are definitely right about the Smith College bathrooms being the prettiest bathrooms I’ve ever seen.

Hampshire County definitely has a bunch going on but I always like to pose a few other trips to folks that seem to get overlooked by Eastern Mass visitors. Try taking Route 2 (Mohawk Trail) to Western Mass through Orange and Irving (up in Franklin County) and there are many hiking and canoeing opportunities. Make a stop in Montague/Turners Falls but if you continue you’ll hit Greenfield and Shelburne Falls and have more sites. Continue to hit Williams College and North Adams. Anyway that’s just one awesome alternative. There are others 🙂

Hi Sally! Thank you so much for the great recommendations! It’s always great to learn about new spots in Massachusetts. 🙂

We hope you will stop at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art next time you are in Amherst, MA! We are minutes from Atkins Country Market!

Thank you for the recommendation Sandy! 🙂

Massachusetts looks like a great fall getaway! The foliage looks beautiful and all of the towns you featured sound like a way to enjoy some much-needed comfort and coziness. Even the bathroom of the museum you visited seems like a place not to be missed!

Western MA offers an abundance of incredible sights and experiences that are truly one-of-a-kind. Each destination holds its own charm and uniqueness. Personally, I find myself captivated by the Smith College Museum of Art. The attention to detail and artistic flair even in the bathrooms is truly remarkable. Another captivating place that has piqued my interest is the Mill 180 park. Its picturesque beauty is simply breathtaking, and I would love to explore it firsthand.

Looks a really interesting area, we visited Boston for the first time last September but went south to Rhode Island. Wouldn’t mind going back this Autumn and heading west this time.

So glad you enjoyed the post. I hope it was helpful and that you had a good time. 🙂

National Nurses Week 2024: A RN reflects on the state of the profession, calls for change

When is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is observed annually May 6 through May 12.

What is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week grew out of a congressional resolution and proclamation signed by President Reagan in 1982 deeming May 6 as a National Recognition Day for Nurses.

The American Nurses Association board of directors expanded this to a National Nurses Week in 1990. The permanent dates for the week were designated in 1993 to be officially observed starting in 1994.

The week includes National School Nurses Day on May 8 and May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, which has been celebrated as International Nurse Day since 1974.
