No wonder that Condé Nast readers have voted Bermuda as the “best island in the Caribbean/Atlantic” no fewer than eighteen times since 1994. The archipelago is also considered to be one of the world’s top destinations for adventure travelers.

It boasts a fascinating history as well.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll find plenty to discover in Bermuda, from museums to historic sites and colonial buildings. The first European explorer to reach the archipelago was the Spanish captain Juan de Bermudez, after whom the islands are named. He did so in 1503. Since its discovery, Bermuda has been under the rule of the English Virginia Company and, later, became a British colony.

Nowadays, it’s still part of the British Commonwealth—it’s the oldest remaining, and the most populous, Overseas Territory of Great Britain. Bermuda’s capital, St. George, is the oldest continuously inhabited English town in the New World.

So, from beaches and adventure to history and culture, Bermuda has plenty to offer. I’m sure you’re pretty intrigued by now, so let’s continue with some useful information. More specifically, let’s take a look at the climate in Bermuda and the best time of the year to cruise to Bermuda.

An Overview of the Bermuda Climate

Even though Bermuda has a more northerly location than most people expect—it lies at the same latitude as the Carolinas in the United States—, it enjoys a most wonderful climate. This is not a Caribbean island, but it gets pretty close. Some would even say that it’s better than the Caribbean.

Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Bermuda is home to more than its fair share of palm trees and subtropical vegetation. Its official climate is “humid subtropical”, bordering a “tropical” climate. While the islands do experience a drop in temperature in the winter months of January, February and early March, there is no record of it ever freezing in Bermuda. The lowest-ever temperature was 43°F, or 6°C.

Summers can get quite hot in Bermuda, but they’re never unbearable. The highest recorded temperature ever was 93°F, or 34°C. Peak summer temperatures typically don’t exceed 86°F, or 30°C. Even if it does happen to get hot in the afternoon, you can simply seek refuge in the sea and wait until the evening sea breeze brings in some welcome cooling.

One thing to know, though, is that Bermuda lies in the so-called “hurricane belt”. Its location in the warm Gulf Stream puts it directly in the path of hurricanes in the westerlies. The official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. However, because of the archipelago’s tiny size, landfalls are exceptionally rare. Moreover, hurricanes usually have weakened by the time they reach Bermuda. This is simply something to be aware of, nothing to worry about.

Unlike the Caribbean islands, Bermuda does not have a wet season , which is why many prefer it over the Caribbean. Heavy downpours typically happen in summer, and then often only overnight, lasting only a couple of hours. Sunshine is available in abundance, basically all the time.

The first one, often regarded as the absolute best time of the year to cruise to Bermuda, runs from the beginning of March to late-April. These two spring months are great for budget travelers . As the temperatures climb out of their annual low, you’ll be able to enjoy more than comfortable spring weather. This is a quiet time of the year, though, so prices are low. Additionally, this time of year is when some of the most festive events take place in Bermuda. Particularly Easter is a holiday you don’t want to miss—you’ll see islanders head to Horseshoe Bay to fly their colorful handmade kites.

The second best time of the year to cruise to Bermuda is from May through September. This is by far the warmest period, roughly correlating with the summer season. If you’re looking for a beach vacation, this is when you’ll want to visit Bermuda. However, as this is the absolute high season, prices skyrocket. Some luxury hotel rooms on the islands go for more than $1,000 per night! With demand as high as it is in summer, you need to book your cruise and, if applicable, onshore accommodation far in advance. You should also keep in mind that you won’t be alone. Beaches will be crowded, restaurants filled.

The very best time to cruise to Bermuda is late spring—April and May . This period offers the best of everything. Bermuda is one of the  top cruise destinations . It is a British overseas territory located in the north Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda actually consists of 181 islands. Most cruise ships dock in the Royal Naval Dockyard, but Bermuda’s capital city of Hamilton is easily reached by ferry for shopping, restaurants, and the famous Swizzle Inn. The historic St. George can also be reached via ferry for a day of exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bermuda truly offers cruisers a slice of paradise with beautiful weather, rich history, and pink sandy beaches.

Unlike the Caribbean or Bahamas though, Bermuda is a seasonal cruise port. The cruise season generally extends from late April to early November. Much like Alaska , WHEN you visit the area is important. There are actually several factors to consider when determining the Best Time of Year to Take a Bermuda Cruise.

When Should You Plan a Cruise to Bermuda?

Best time of year to take a bermuda cruise: weather.

Bermuda is located 650 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Being much farther north than the Bahamas or Caribbean, the weather gets much cooler in the winter. During the off-season of December to March, the temperatures can drop into the 50’s (F). While this weather might be acceptable for golfing, this time of year is certainly not for beach lounging. Thus, no cruise ships sail to Bermuda during the winter months.

However, the weather in Bermuda is temperate and semi-tropical which means it never really gets too warm in the summer, and there is always a light breeze. This makes it the perfect summer escape.

Further, there is no real rainy season in Bermuda. Though, October tends to be the wettest month. Late August to October is prime hurricane season in the area, but Bermuda is less frequently hit by storms than the Caribbean.

In general, the months of June, July, and August tend to have more Caribbean-like weather. However, with this optimal weather comes increased crowds and increased price. So, you will have to weigh these factors carefully when deciding what’s the best time for you to take a Bermuda cruise. For the best prices, we tend to book our Bermuda cruises a year in advance .

Best Time of Year to Take a Bermuda Cruise: Price

It is important to first note that overall Bermuda cruises tend to be more expensive than similar trips to the Bahamas or Caribbean. Still, Bermuda cruise fares fluctuate considerably depending on a few factors. Pricing can range widely depending on the cruise line/ship, itinerary, and time of year.

As mentioned earlier, Bermuda cruise season generally runs from late April/early May through the end of October/early November. As with most seasonal cruise regions, the shoulder season is when prices tend to be the lowest . 

For those looking to save money, the best time of year to take a Bermuda cruise would be either early in the season or late in the season. Besides having lower fares, you will have greater choices for cabins and can score the perfect mid-ship balcony at a reduced cost.

While July might offer some of the warmest weather, it tends to be the most expensive month to take a Bermuda cruise.

Bermuda cruises also vary in terms of length. Depending on the departure point, itineraries can be as short as 4 or 5 days. They can also be longer than a typical 7-day cruise if they include stops in Canada/New England or the Bahamas/Caribbean.

Of course, the length of the cruise and itinerary will impact pricing. So, be sure to compare all your options.

Best Time of Year to Take a Bermuda Cruise: Crowds

There are also certain times of the Bermuda cruise season that are preferred if you would like to avoid crowds. The busiest time of year for cruises to Bermuda usually coincides with warmer weather and summer break.

To avoid the crowds, you should skip cruising in the middle of the season. June, July, and August will have peak crowds, especially July. If you cruise during this time, be prepared to share Horseshoe Bay Beach with thousands of other cruisers.

Inevitably, other popular tourist attractions and activities will also be more crowded this time of year.

If you take a Bermuda cruise during the shoulder seasons, you will not only save money but you will avoid the crowds, especially families. In late April/early May kids are usually still in school, and they are usually back to school by September. The number of families and kids will of course vary based on the cruise line and cruise ship you choose.

Popular mega-ships from brands like Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Disney Cruise Line will inevitably have more families onboard.

Best Time of Year to Take a Bermuda Cruise: Ship Selection

While not as populous with cruise ships as the Caribbean or Bahamas, you will still have a decent ship selection for a Bermuda cruise. Many major cruise lines have at least one ship sailing to Bermuda for at least part of the season. Many cruise ships even spend one or two overnight stays giving cruisers more time to explore.

While Florida is often referred to as the cruise capital of the world, you will probably have to head elsewhere for a cruise to Bermuda. Cruises to Bermuda are usually pretty popular with cruisers from the Northeast United States as many are within driving distance to a cruise port.

For instance, Norwegian Cruise Line offers round-trip Bermuda sailings from Boston, MA and New York, NY.

In 2021 and 2022, Carnival Cruise Line will sail to Bermuda from Baltimore, MD; New York, NY; and Norfolk, VA. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises sails from Cape Liberty, NJ, while Disney Cruise Line sails from New York, NY. Royal Caribbean also offers sailings from Cape Liberty, NJ and Baltimore, MD. For the first time in 2022, Royal Caribbean will be offering Bermuda cruises from Port Canaveral, FL.

While Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity Cruises have the largest presence in Bermuda, other more luxury brands like Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea, as well as select sailings from Princess Cruises and Windstar Cruises also call in Bermuda.

Further, select smaller ships might have occasional visits to the smaller ports of Hamilton or St. George.

Yes, you will be able to enjoy the beaches, shopping, historical sites, and Rum Swizzles anytime during the Bermuda cruise season. Although, when taking into account the weather, prices, and crowds, we suggest that the best time of year to take a Bermuda cruise is early in the season (late April/early May).

We cruised to Bermuda for the first time back in 2016 on Anthem of the Seas in late April. We were able to experience all this British territory has to offer with fewer crowds, and the weather was still fabulous!

The Best Time to Cruise to Bermuda for Beaches, Festivals and More

Bermuda has been a popular cruise destination for years due to its ideal summer climate, stunning Bermuda beaches , and wealth of activities. The island is conveniently located in the North Atlantic Ocean, just 7 hours away from New York City by ship. As a result, you’ll find a wide range of cruise options available that vary in length and price.

So, what is the best time to cruise to Bermuda? Not surprisingly, it depends on what you’re really looking for in your cruise vacation. Keep reading for tips on key scheduling factors.

Bermuda: Quick Climate Overview

Bermuda has a long history as a worldwide beach destination, and it remains one of the best beach destinations outside of the Caribbean. Many argue that its temperate climate makes it even more desirable than similar Caribbean islands.

Compared to the Caribbean, Bermuda is very far north, at the same latitude as the Carolinas in the United States, but it enjoys a subtropical climate due to the warm Gulf Stream that flows toward the islands. Its temperatures dip between December and March, but it never gets below freezing.

The climate makes it comfortable to visit Bermuda year-round, but there are some things you should consider if you’re planning to cruise there.

Cruise Schedules: Bermuda As a Seasonal Destination

Most cruises only sail to Bermuda between April and November as the winter temperatures dip into the mid-fifties, which, for most people, is not suitable for a beach destination, not to mention all the other outdoor activities that get chillier in the winter.

However, this is beginning to change, and more cruises may also offer cruises to Bermuda in the colder months, which also means rates can be found at a steep discount. If you see a cruise to Bermuda in the winter months, check the prices, but remember that you probably won’t be doing a lot of swimming.

April-May: Best Time to Cruise to Bermuda for Exploration and Festivals

April through May is widely considered the best time to visit Bermuda. The weather is low to mid-seventies, making it perfect for exploring the island, golfing, touring, or whatever else you want to do. However, the water temperatures are still in the low fifties, so if you want a beach vacation where you’re swimming and playing, opt for the summer or fall months.

Instead, April and May are best for the opening of the festival season, the holiday of Easter, and several world-famous yacht races that attract the best sailors from the world over. If you time your visit with Easter weekend, you can enjoy Bermuda’s Kite Festival in Horseshoe Bay, where locals and tourists alike fly kites high in the sky. Indeed a sight to behold.

Easter is a huge holiday for the island, and you’ll find plenty to see and do while visiting. Happen to visit during the end of April instead. You’ll be able to see the Bermuda International Invitational Race Week , a highly anticipated yacht race with competitors from all over the world.

May is Bermuda Day , when Bermuda celebrates its history as a colony, and if you visit at the beginning of the month, you can catch the end of Race Week. You may also see warmer temperatures and more rainfall, so pack accordingly and prepare for beach time this month.

Unless you’re visiting during a festival or holiday, you won’t have as many crowds to deal with as during peak season, and the opening of the tourist season can see up to 30% discounts on cabins and onshore accommodations.

Given the fewer crowds, better deals, and all the festivities, April and May are hands down the best months to cruise to Bermuda during the year.

June-August: Peak Season, but the Best Time to Cruise to Bermuda for Beaches

June is the opening of hurricane season, though that’s less of a concern than you might think for Bermuda. The summer season on this island is mainly known for lots of festivals, crowds, high prices, and packed beaches.

June through August is the best time to hit the beach in Bermuda. The weather is in the nineties, the ocean is in the eighties, and it’s a fantastic time to hit the beach and enjoy the balmy weather.

These months are a must if you want your plans to revolve around the beach. However, it’s also peak season for Bermuda, and plenty of other people enjoy the coast and the islands.

Cabins and onshore accommodations are expensive, so book anything ahead of time if you’re planning to visit during this season. Luckily, the festival season is still going strong through these months, with plenty of small street festivals, longer holidays, and boat races to enjoy. 

The Annapolis Bermuda Race, the Newport Bermuda Race, and the Carnival-style Bermuda Heroes Weekend take place in June and make great visits.

If you visit during July, participate in the Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship where the best anglers compete to catch the most impressive of the predatory fish species.

August has a cricket tournament called the Cup Match that takes place during the Non-Mariners Water Raft-Up, where boats of varying sizes and seaworthiness take to the sea to party. Celebrations are always happening this time of year, so you’ll be spoiled with things to do and see.

Ensure you pack a poncho for the occasional shower and that you’re aware of any tropical storms or hurricanes in the region. While nothing will likely happen, it’s good to be prepared in an emergency. The last hurricane that hit the islands was in 2003. They occasionally make landfall every six or seven years.

Thunderstorms are more common, though they fly by fairly quickly, and most rainfall is at night. But you should be packed in case a sudden bout of rain interrupts your tour or activity. Otherwise, pack lightly for hot weather, and break out the swimsuits, Bermuda shorts, and sundresses to get your feel of sunshine while on the islands.

September-November: Shoulder Season, Best Deals

Once summer is gone, so are most of the tourists. The islands begin quieting down mid-September, and most cruise lines run until the end of November, making this the best time to score great deals on cabins and accommodations. While festivals are fewer, there’s still plenty to see and do in Bermuda, like golfing, touring historic sites, and even going to the beach.

The temperature varies between the lower and the upper seventies during the fall, with more rainfall. Still, the ocean is around the same temperature, making swimming pleasant. While Bermuda doesn’t have a traditional rainy season the way Caribbean islands do, it’s good to remember there is more rain in these months and prepare accordingly.

If a few raindrops don’t stand in your way, then you’ll have islands all to yourself. Bermuda is still beautiful this time of year, and it’s the perfect time to get some beach in before winter hits. Beaches, historic sites, tours, accommodations, and cruises are offered at a steep discount.

September has a Sand Sculpture Competition , where you can show off your skills on the beach, and it rounds out the festival season for Bermuda. However, you can still attend noteworthy events, like the City Food Festival in Hamilton in October, where you can enjoy the best Bermudan food on the islands, or the World Rugby Classic in November, a must-see for rugby fans.

Keep in mind it gets colder the further you get in the year, and the last swimming temperatures would be in early October. However, Bermuda is a lot more than just stunning beaches, so there’s sure to be an activity you want to do.

Hurricane Season: Not a Concern

Hurricane season is from June through October, and Bermuda is at an elevated risk of westerlies coming in from the Gulf Stream. However, hurricanes rarely make landfall–only once every six or seven years. Many hotels and cruises offer “Hurricane guarantees,” where if a storm does throw off your plans, they’ll give you complimentary stays and free nights.

Overall, it’s good to be aware of possible hurricanes and tropical thunderstorms, but they shouldn’t be a determining factor when planning to cruise to Bermuda.

Closing Thoughts

The best time to cruise to Bermuda for hot weather and beaches is definitely during the peak season from June to August, but if you’re not concerned about swimming temperatures, you may enjoy visiting in spring for festivals or from September to November for the best deals with still decent weather.

Flaunting idyllic stretches of beach lapped by cerulean waters, Bermuda  is somewhere people come for sun, sea and serenity.

However, this tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is more seasonal than many of its Caribbean counterparts. While the summer is warm and dry, hurricane season and cooler weather keep away many visitors in fall and winter. For budget visitors, however, this is when prices plunge.

Whether you come for the sun, the sport, local festivals or the culture, here's a guide to the best times to visit Bermuda.

May to October is high season and the best time for a beach vacation

Bermuda’s spring months quickly heat up both the air and ocean temperatures, heralding the arrival of the warm summer. Highs hover around 76ºF in May before spiking to hit the high 80ºFs from June to October.

Though this may not seem outrageously high, don’t forget to check the UV index and humidity levels during your trip. The sun is intense during peak summer, and you will want sunscreen on whenever you go outside. High humidity – usually 80 to almost 100% from June to September – can make even a short walk along the beach into an effort.

This period of exceptionally warm and dry weather draws crowds of tourists, so expect high hotel prices and busy beaches. In peak summer, sea temperatures are akin to bath water – you won't get a cool, refreshing dip in July and August, but more of a thermal spa-like experience.

There are fewer people in March and April

Though short and unpredictable, the shoulder season runs from March through April. There's plenty on the cultural calendar but anything goes weatherwise. Average daytime highs hang in the low 70ºFs, which is ideal for a quiet beach day when the sun shines, but can be less delightful on an overcast day.

If you’ve previously traveled to Bermuda during high season, the end of March or the beginning of April is worth taking a gamble on for a quieter island experience.

You’ll likely have the beaches to yourself and the opportunity to stay at Bermuda’s most popular resorts at a discounted rate. For a first-time trip, though, it’s better to stick to the high season for those perfect sunny days that Bermuda is famous for.

Low season rates are on offer in November to February

Bermuda has a low season! This often shocks people who’ve never visited before and base their image of the island on photos of rose-flecked beaches perfectly juxtaposed between pastel-colored homes and turquoise waters.

These photos were likely snapped in the summer because, yes, Bermuda has a low season, marked by cool temperatures and regular windy and rainy days.

Visitors from northern climates may not consider the temperatures at this time of year to be anywhere near “cold” – on average, daytime highs are between 60ºF and 70ºF, occasionally dipping into the high 50ºFs – but locals bring out parkas and sweaters. You may even catch wafts of wood smoke from the chimneys of island homes at this time of year.

The sun is still strong, however, so if you catch a warm front, you can enjoy rum swizzles (rum, juice, grenadine and bitters) on the waterfront, putter out on a boat or take a walk on the beach. The biggest perk of the low season is the prices. Hotel rates plunge from high-season levels, so you may be able to snag a deal.

Crowds thin out, but most businesses inland operate regular hours, including restaurants and bars. You may have difficulty finding something on the beach that’s open, but the weather isn’t ideal for beach time anyway.

Stick to activities inland , explore downtown Hamilton (or “town” as the locals like to call it) and enjoy the offseason, local vibe.

Hurricane season is officially June through November

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Though Bermuda is officially within the hurricane corridor, the island is usually only affected by late-season storms in September and October, if affected at all.

Thanks to Bermuda’s northerly location and small size, direct hits are rare, so if you happen to be on the island during a storm, you'll usually only need to prepare for heavy rains and winds. Of course, this differs each hurricane season, so keep an eye on the national weather service for the latest updates.

If the thought of a hurricane makes you nervous, aim for a trip at the start of the high season instead. Storms are very unlikely in May, June and July.

January is for undisturbed beach strolls

January can be so quiet that sometimes even locals don’t know what to do. This is the month for wrapping up and walking on undisturbed beaches, cozying up in one of the island's English-style pubs or touring some of the island’s historic fortresses and museums. Athletic types come for the Bermuda Triangle Challenge  – a series of marathons that attract athletes from all over the world.  Key events : The Bermuda Triangle Challenge, Bermuda Restaurant Week begins.

February is for foodies

This is usually a rainy month with weather patterns similar to January. Luckily, Bermuda Restaurant Week is in full swing, so you can pass time enjoying culinary delights at Bermuda’s most popular restaurants. Don’t miss fish chowder with an extra splash of rum and sherry pepper at Harry’s , a fish sandwich at Art Mel’s  or fish and chips at Astwood Arms . Key event: Bermuda Restaurant Week.

March is for whale watching

The winter chill usually dissipates during the first two weeks in March, just in time for the start of the annual humpback whale migration. Take a boat trip offshore to witness these mammoth creatures breach so close that you might be sprayed by the splash. Alternatively, set up a picnic at the beach and scan the horizon – you can usually see whales breaching just offshore with the naked eye.

April brings Easter festivities

Whenever Easter happens to fall, the island is abuzz with hot cross buns and pastel-colored piles of tissue paper lining storefronts. May is the official start of summer

May 24 (Bermuda Day) is the official start of summer, and many locals won’t take a dip in the ocean before this date. For tourists, though, May 1 marks the start of the high season. Outdoor activities abound, and Hamilton's Harbor Nights kick off and continue through to October with stalls and live entertainment every Wednesday evening on Front St. Key events : International Race Week, Bermuda Day, Harbor Nights in Hamilton begin.

June sees peak sunshine and prices

Expect warm, dry days from here on out with the humidity slowly climbing to reach 80% or more for the remainder of summer.

Hotel rates increase, beaches start to get crowded, and the docks empty on weekends as locals and tourists hit the water for boating activities, from tubing to diving and drinking on "raft-ups" (groups of boats tied together or anchored in a line at a sandbar).

Sailors gather for the annual Newport Bermuda Race , while landlubbers hit the Bermuda Carnival.  Key events: Bermuda Heroes Weekend, Newport Bermuda Race, Bermuda Carnival.

July is all about the beaches and the fishing

Summer festivities continue with locals and visitors spending as much time outside as they can. The sun is warm during these months, but nothing a frosty rum swizzle can’t cool off. Sport fishers come for the three-leg Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship , starting with the Bermuda Billfish Blast. Key events: Cupmatch (if not in August), Bermuda Billfish Blast.

August is Bermuda's Emancipation  

Bermuda’s Emancipation is marked by a four-day holiday weekend that’s the peak of summer celebrations. The annual Cup Match cricket match attracts spectators of all ages, while beach trips and boat parties such as the Non-Mariners Water Raft-Up in Mangrove Bay lure those who are more enthused by the time off work. If you’re visiting during the holiday, do your grocery shopping early as most stores and businesses shutter up for the celebrations. October is great for quiet beaches

Beach lifeguards are still on duty through October, which means that beach days are still perfectly viable, though beachgoers start to thin out by the end of the month. November is a good month for cheap deals and golfers

You might hit a pleasantly sunny November, or you might have a wet, rainy vacation. CRUISE INTO DOCKYARD, GRAB LUNCH & EXPLORE THE SHORE

You’ve anchored in the  Royal Naval Dockyard , a former British Royal Navy stronghold rich in maritime history and already it’s not like any other island. The 19 th -century barracks that surround the port once kept guard over the West End, but now houses the  National Museum . An award-winning playground and  dolphin sanctuary  are pulls for the younger members of the family, but head straight to the Hall of History mural to get some quick perspective first. Local artist Graham Foster has colourfully chronicled Bermuda’s story on the two-story wall; take a few minutes to admire his awe-inspiring depiction of island life before diving into the main attractions.

Explore the area by foot. Stop at must-sees like  The Arts Centre,  Dockyard Clayworks and Dockyard Glass to see local craftspeople at work. While you're here, get a  three-day bus and ferry pass  and start planning with a locally made scoop (or two) of  Alex & Pete’s Artisan Ice-Cream  in hand. It’s a 10-minute bus ride to lunch at local-favourite  Woody’s  to enjoy their famed fish sandwich dockside. After washing it down with a cold ginger beer, get back on the bus – look out for the pink stop – to head to the astonishing  South Shore Beaches.

It wouldn't be a proper Bermuda cruise itinerary without plenty of time to explore the island's breathtaking beaches. There are several stops to choose from:  Church Bay  is a snorkeller’s paradise thanks to a network of shallow reef close to shore.  Horseshoe Bay  is one of the world’s most photographed beaches and it’s easy to see why; the wide crescent of soft, pink sand and crystal-clear water makes a great starting point for exploring nearby coves and on-site rental concessions, Rum Bum Beach Bar and changing facilities provide everything you need for a great day at the beach. Further east,  Warwick Long Bay , known for having the pinkest sand, stretches for half a mile and is great for swimming. Elbow Beach gets its name from the curve of its shoreline and offers a long stretch of pristine sand. Whichever you choose, it’s impossible to go wrong.

Hop on a bus back to  Dockyard  with enough time to freshen up in your cabin and grab a bite before booking a  Gosling’s Rum Tasting Cruise  with  Fantasea . The quintessential twilight Bermuda cruise, the itinerary begins with departure from Dockyard at 7.30 pm and is not only a way to learn the history of rum on the island – perhaps the island's best-known export – but a great way to better learn about Bermuda. The second leg of your Bermuda cruise itinerary begins with a little island-hopping – and a cup of joe. 

While one country, the island of Bermuda is actually a long ribbon of land made up of 181 islands that take on the shape of a fish hook. A fine way to see it is from the water and during cruise season, Bermuda's ferry runs from end to end. Take the early boat from  Dockyard  to  St. George's  to spend a day in the former capital and UNESCO world heritage site, a spot that begs for exploration.

Browse local shops such as the handmade  Salt Spray Soap Company , local literature and goods at  Long Story Short ,  The Island Shop  and the sweet scents of indigenous flora at  The Bermuda Perfumery  housed in photogenic Stewart Hall.

Grab island-style lunch from  Mama Angie’s , a mom-and-pop food stall by Somers Garden and take a stroll through the grounds. Legend has it that the heart of its namesake, the Admiral Sir George, is buried there.

Take a cab or minibus from  Kings Square  to  Fort St. Catherine , an impressive stronghold and museum overlooking  Achilles Bay . Settle there or beach it further down the coast at Tobacco Bay. The latter is a laid-back spot, made remarkable with its unique limestone rock formations and coral reef, popular with snorkellers. The terrace serves frozen cocktails and beach snacks to an island soundtrack. It’s an easy place to spend an hour or two.

Catch the Orange Route ferry back to Dockyard in time for dinner onboard the ship and venture out again for live music at  Bone fish Bar and Grill  and then late-night venue  Snorkel Park .

PRE-DEPARTURE SHOPPING & LUNCH WITH A VIEW

With an afternoon departure, there’s plenty of time for a morning excursion, so stretch out the final hours of your Bermuda cruise itinerary accordingly. Take the 20-minute ferry to the  City of Hamilton , the island’s business centre and capital.

The loop around  Front Street  to  Queen Street  to  Reid Street  forms the main shopping route for your island souvenirs. Grab a coffee at  Rock Island  that's made from beans roasted in-house and freshly baked pastries before browsing the shops. Best and Worst Times to Visit Bermuda

The best time to visit Bermuda is July through September for beach lovers and March through May for land lovers.

If there is one best month to visit, it is July for a combination of warm temperatures and lower risk of rain. The worst time to visit Bermuda is October when the average rainfall is more than six inches.

Bermuda does not have quite the same weather as do most Caribbean islands. It is 450 miles east of North Carolina and is technically not in the Caribbean Sea. Its northern location means temperatures are somewhat cooler.

But it often is included in Caribbean cruises embarking from the east coast of the U.S. Caribbean hurricanes and thunderstorms move north of the Caribbean and sometimes pass in the vicinity of Bermuda.

It has other features in common with islands to the south. The island’s government is a member of the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

It’s also a popular destination for cruises from the east coast of the U.S. that go only to Bermuda.

Best Times for Temperatures

The best time to visit Bermuda for beach lovers is during the later summer when average high temperatures reach the mid 80s Fahrenheit and high 20s Celsius.

Seawater temperatures are comfortable enough for swimming most of the day.

Although June is part of the summer, the average high temperature historically is 81 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Bermuda Weather Service. Seawater is sometimes not comfortable enough for swimming, especially in the mornings, because of cooling nighttime temperatures.

Rainfall during the summer averages about five inches a month, which is slightly higher than average for the year and slightly higher than most Caribbean destinations.

April and May average a little more than three inches and have the lowest rainfall of the year. Those months are best for people who like land activities, but they aren’t good months for swimming because of cooler water temperatures. Daytime temperatures average in the 70s Fahrenheit or low 20s Celsius.

Hurricane Season

The Bermuda hurricane season goes from June through October when the average rainfall exceeds five inches a month. It reaches a high point of more than six inches in October.

October is the second most active month of the Caribbean hurricane season. Hurricanes and tropical storms that reach the Caribbean from the eastern Atlantic often travel up the eastern seaboard of the U.S. They bring more rain to Bermuda, Florida and other east coast destinations.

Bermuda has the damaging effects of a hurricane about once every six or seven years, according to the Bermuda Weather Service. “Covering an area of approximately 20 square miles, Bermuda is a small target and as a result rarely suffers a direct hit,” the service says.

Other months with a high risk of rain are January, June, August and September. The high risk of rain in January is unusual compared to Caribbean destinations. January is part of the dry season for them.

Golfers and other visitors who enjoy land recreations and want to get away for a quick island trip should consider waiting until February or March.

Average Monthly Weather

The average monthly weather in Bermuda ranges from the high 60s Fahrenheit in the winter to the mid 80s Fahrenheit in the summer.

Rainfall ranges from a low point of three inches in May to a high point of more than six inches in October.

High Season

High season in Bermuda typically lasts from April to September when the weather is at its best.

Overnight tourism grows from a low point in January to the highest point of the year in July, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

For those looking for warm, sunny days to go to the beach or those looking to experience calm, cool evenings for romantic outings, this is surely the best period in which to go.  July has the best combination of warm summer temperatures and moderate risk of rain.

Major public attractions such as Bermuda’s famous pink sand beaches will have larger crowds during the high season.

During this period, average daytime temperatures often stay in the high 60s Fahrenheit. Temperatures will usually feel chilly during early mornings and late evenings. Although beach visits are possible, seawater is too cold for swimming.

Bermuda’s low season is the exact opposite of the Caribbean. Anyone looking to travel within this period but wanting to avoid high rates in the Caribbean may find that Bermuda is a better choice. That said, tourism is lowest in January, followed by February and then December.

Bermuda Celebrates Record-Breaking Cruise Season Opening in 2024

The Ministry of Transport is pleased to announce that the first quarter of 2024 has marked a milestone for Bermuda’s cruise tourism industry. Bermuda proudly welcomed an unprecedented number of visitors during this period.

Minister Furbert said, “A total of 14 cruise ship calls between January and March, brought an estimated 43,114 passengers. This quarter’s visitor numbers are exceptional and reflect Bermuda’s enduring appeal as a premier cruise destination. This sets a new benchmark for the hospitality sector and a promising start to the traditional busy cruise season. ”

Minister Furbert added, “Looking ahead, Bermuda anticipates hosting approximately 578,000 passengers throughout the year, projecting a substantial revenue forecast of $172.4 million from passenger and crew expenditures, and an estimated $26.4 million in passenger taxes, $12 million in transport infrastructure taxes, $7.7 million in visitor fees, and $10.2 million, for a total of estimated economic activity of $228.7 million dollars into Bermuda’s economy underlining the economic vitality generated by our cruise sector.

“In April, we anticipate 22 scheduled cruise ship calls, with an estimated 66,326 visitors expected to arrive, provided there are no cancellations. Despite facing early winter storms, Bermuda has demonstrated resilience and strength, solidifying its position as a preferred cruise destination.

Today, Tuesday 2 April through Thursday, 4 April,  we welcomed the inaugural call of the Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection ‘Evrima’ docking in the City of Hamilton. This brand is leading the way for a new era of ultra-luxury cruising. This call is a homeporting visit whereby 238 guests will disembark on Thursday morning between 6 am and 10 am. Approximately 228 guests will arrive by air to Bermuda to join the ship for departure on Thursday.  The No. 5 carpark on Front Street will be used for the disembarkation and embarkation process.   

Minister Furbert concluded, “As I stated in the House of Assembly on 8 December 2023, Bermuda has not only weathered the storms but has emerged stronger. As we continue into the remainder of 2024, Bermuda remains committed to providing an exceptional cruise experience, ensuring every visitor leaves with unforgettable memories of our stunning island paradise.”

Caribbean Cruise Ports Lead Segment Surge

T he Caribbean, the cruise industry’s largest deployment region, is driving its post-pandemic resurgence. Several regional destinations are reporting robust 2024 cruise arrivals following similarly positive results in 2023.

The region’s cruise ship surge lies behind a global passenger increase. A total of 31.7 million travelers cruised in 2023, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)’s 2024 State of the Cruise Industry report. The total represents a seven percent increase over pre-pandemic 2019.

Of that number according to CLIA, 44.2 percent of 2023 cruise passengers traveled to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda, far outpacing the 18.5 percent who sailed to the Mediterranean, the next-highest global region.

In all, 12.9 million cruise passengers traveled to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda in 2023, a 7.3 percent increase over 2019. “The Caribbean gained almost one million new cruise visitors in 2023 compared to 2019,” CLIA officials stated in the report.

The cruise growth trend is evident, said destination officials. The Bahamas will host 5.6 million cruise passengers at its Nassau Cruise Port in 2024, said Chester Cooper, minister of tourism.

The figure will exceed the 5.4 million the port hosted in pre-pandemic 2019, said Cooper. “We are about 40 percent higher on cruise passengers at the Nassau cruise port,” he said.

In Barbados, government officials say 392 cruise calls carrying 715,527 passengers are confirmed for the 2024 winter season. The figures represent an 18 percent increase compared with the 358 calls and 608,583 passengers hosted in 2023.

Overall, Barbados’ 2024 cruise passenger arrivals are poised to exceed its 2023 numbers, with 826,338 passengers expected to arrive at the country’s Bridgetown port this year, arriving on 338 calls. Last winter, Barbados hosted 661,635 passengers arriving on 373 calls, said Ian Gooding-Edghill, minister of tourism.

Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA) officials quoted in a Curaçao Chronicle article anticipates 300 cruise calls with an average occupancy of 90 percent in 2024. The ships will deliver 800,000 cruise passengers to the destination this year, a 13 percent increase over 2023 totals.

Cruising High

The dual-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda is also among the Caribbean’s 2024 cruise visitation leaders. The destination is expected to host 800,000 cruise ship visitors in 2024 according to government tourism officials quoted in a WICNews.com report.

On March 12, Antigua and Barbuda hosted 15,808 passengers aboard six cruise ships, a record for the dual-island destination. The vessels included ships from Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Aida Cruises and Sea Dream Yacht Club.

Antigua and Barbuda followed its record March with a five-ship day on April 1, as vessels from Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Emerald Cruises carrying 10,820 visitors called at the destination, according to government tourism officials.

Caribbean tourism officials attending last week’s Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach detailed the cruise segment’s resurgence in their countries.

Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s tourism minister, said Royal Caribbean Group officials “reaffirmed their commitment to Jamaica,” during the conference, maintaining a target of 400,000 annual visitors at Jamaica’s Falmouth cruise port.

The country hosted 389,319 cruise passengers in 2023, a 29.7 percent increase compared with 2022.

Saying “Seatrade 2024 signaled the returning strength of the cruise sector,” Bartlett held discussions with Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises during the event.

The Jamaica minister also held “very positive” discussions with MSC Cruises officials regarding “their interest in forging a larger strategic partnership involving investment in local infrastructure.”

Regional Resurgence

Other Caribbean nations reporting recent cruise visitation growth include the Turks and Caicos, where Experience Turks and Caicos officials reported 98,161 cruise ship visitors in March, the year’s highest total.

The Dominican Republic’s cruise ports hosted 52 cruise ships in April said Atahualpa Paulino, northern regional director of tourism, in a DominicanToday.com report.

The higher 2024 Caribbean arrivals follow similar success across 2023. The twin-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis hosted 774,512 cruise ship visitors in 2023, a 61 percent increase over the 481,077 arrivals in 2022.

British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) officials said the territory hosted 720,392 cruise ship visitors in 2023, a 110 percent increase over the 343, 571 visitors hosted in 2022. The 2023 total “also surpasses the highest recorded arrivals” of 699,105 passengers in 2016, according to BVIPA.

Significant room for growth remains for the Caribbean cruising despite the increased arrivals in 2023 and 2024.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ 2023 cruise arrivals growth still trails the 1,053,388 cruise visitors the destination hosted in 2019, according to statistics from Tourism Analytics.

Bermuda hosted 525,413 visitors on 183 cruise ship calls in 2023, up 30.5 percent and 11.6 percent respectively from 2022, according to the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s 2023 Visitors Arrivals Report. Yet the total still trails the 535,561 cruise visitors Bermuda hosted in 2019.

The Cayman Islands hosted 937,000 cruise ship visitors in 2023, according to Economics and Statistics office data quoted in a Cayman Compass article. The figure represents a year-over-year increase of 118.1 percent but is about half of the 2019 total of 1.83 million cruise visitors.

“We are seeing the huge [cruise] growth, but if we haven’t yet reached the numbers before COVID,” Hugo Clarinda, Curaçao’s deputy tourism director, said earlier this year.

The Caribbean nation hosted “around 700,000 cruise visitors” in 2023, said Clarinda. “We will surpass 800,000 for sure,” he predicted.  “Cruise continues to be important part of the mix [that] contributes to [our] economic impact.”

MSC Cruises Unveils New 2025 Itineraries

MSC Cruises revealed its summer 2025 itineraries for the North American market, featuring four ships sailing from U.S. homeports. Travelers can choose from various vacation options, with departures from New York City, Miami, and Port Canaveral visiting destinations in the Caribbean, Florida, The Bahamas, and Bermuda. Many itineraries include visits to MSC Cruises’ private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

MSC Cruises will run two ships from its new terminal at PortMiami, the world’s largest. MSC World America will debut in April 2025, offering 7-night cruises to Caribbean ports. This LNG-powered ship will be the largest vessel operated by the cruise line in the U.S., providing a distinct experience for guests. Ports of call will include San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Costa Maya, Cozumel; Isla de Roatan in Honduras; and Ocean Cay.
