105 Vacation Captions for Your Next Travel-inspired Instagram Post

Enhance your best travel photos with these clever quotes and funny lines — perfect for any destination.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

In the age of social media, there's a lot of pressure to be a wordsmith and create the perfect eye-catching travel post in real time. You've already got the breathtaking photos for Instagram; now you just need a suitable caption to wrap up your experiences.

Crafting your posts might even detract from being in the moment. To avoid this, instead of uploading photos throughout the day, try doing it before bed — or even as a post-vacation roundup. Keep the apps closed while you're enjoying an experience and turn off notifications to minimize distractions. Remember to use ethical posting practices, like avoiding geotags that could harm a destination or its locals — both people and wildlife.

With great photos and travel-inspired quotes and one-liners at the ready, every traveler can share witty posts — no matter the destination. Below, get some inspiration or borrow one of these vacation captions for Instagram.

35 BAGUIO TOURIST SPOTS & Things to Do

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

Baguio has always been one of the top destinations in the Philippines. Because of its chilly temperature, pine-dominated landscapes, and overall romantic atmosphere, this mountain city has attracted tourists especially in summer and the holidays like Christmas and New Year.

THEPOORTRAVELERKLOOK

Although a highly urbanized city, Baguio retains its rustic charm in spots. From natural sites to modern ones, Baguio has something for each type of traveler and each age group. Moreover, the food culture and shopping districts have become attractions themselves.

Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, here are some of the best things to do and places to visit in and near Baguio City. In this list, we are also including attractions in the neighboring municipalities like La Trinidad and Tuba .

Note: Baguio is geographically within Benguet but is not under the jurisdiction of the province. It has its own charter and administration.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

TOP BAGUIO TOURIST SPOTS & ACTIVITIES

Baguio is bursting with interesting places to visit and things to do. But here are some of our top recommendations!

Mirador Hill and Eco Park

JAPAN IN BAGUIO! Easily a highlight of our most recent trip, the Mirador Heritage and Eco-Spirituality Park is a rising tourist destination, boasting a combination of local and Japan-inspired attractions.

This 5-hectare property is scribbled with hiking trails leading to different sites including the Rock Gardens, the Pandemic Healing Memorial, the La Storta Garden, Ifugao Houses, and the Circular Seismic Chamber (closed when we visited). But perhaps the most popular is the iconic Mirador Peace Memorial, a red-painted torii gate atop the hill, overlooking the city and the surrounding hills. It is a favorite photo spot for many visitors.

Mirador Peace Memorial

Another crowd-drawer is the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, perhaps named after the bamboo forest of Kyoto’s temple district. While the bamboo trunks are not as big or tall as those in the Japan site, it still makes for a refreshing resting and photo spot.

Mirador Hill Bamboo Groves

Aside from the park, Mirador Hill also harbors the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Kapilya ni Hesus at Maria, Café Iñigo, and the Mirador Jesuit Villa Retreat House.

Address: Mirador Hill, Barangay Dominican Hill-Mirador, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P100 (Regular); FREE (Below 12 y/o)

Oh, by the way, if you’re interested in only the newest attractions, we have a video about that here:

Igorot Stone Kingdom

Launched to the public in the second half of 2021, the Igorot Stone Kingdom is Baguio’s newest attraction. So new that construction of some parts were still ongoing when we visited. The park showcases both modern and traditional Igorot culture as well as the values of the Cordillera Region.

Igorot Stone Kingdom

The whole area covers about 6,000 square meters and is dominated by two massive structures facing each other — a modern-day castle and an old-school stone wall. Made of hollow blocks and cement, the modern-day castle is etched with walkways, punctuated by statues, photo spots and viewing decks. It also crowned by a food court, serving mostly Pinoy snacks.

The stone wall, on the other hand, resembles the rice terraces that feature the rock-laying skills of the Igorot people. As you climb, you get to see the Fertility Stone Tower, the Temple of Kabunyan, Bangan’s Dome, the Tower of Gatan, the Face in the Rock, and many more.

Inside Igorot Stone Kingdom

Other attractions are the Igorot Gold Mine, the Wishing Well, and the Igorot Golden Bridge. Soon, the park will also have life-size statues of prominent Igorots.

Address: #86 Long-long Benguet Road, Pinsao Proper, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P100 (Regular); P80 (Senior & PWD with ID); P80 (Kids 4-12 y/o); FREE (3 y/o and below)

Tam-awan Village

Just a stone’s throw from Igorot Stone Kingdom lies Tam-Awan Village , nicknamed Garden in the Sky . It was commissioned by the Chanum Foundation in 1998 in order to create a model village showcasing reconstructed traditional Cordillera houses and make them accessible to more people.

Tam-awan Village

The village highlights the indigenous craftsmanship and aesthetics of the region and its local artists. From three huts transported from Ifugao, the village now has nine traditional houses — seven Ifugao huts and two Kalinga houses. These structures were reconstructed using mostly the original materials.

If you want to immerse yourself more, you can also book your lodging here.

Diplomat Hotel

Officially named the Dominican Hill Retreat House but popularly referred to as the Diplomat Hotel , the 17-hectare property is sprawled atop the Dominican Hill. It was originally built as a retreat house for the Dominican priests and nuns in the first half of the 20th century until World War II, when the Japanese took over and turned it into a military garrison and war prison.

After restorations and remodeling, the Diplomat Hotel was launched and operated between the 1970s and the 1980s. Given its history, especially the atrocities of WWII, it gained notoriety for paranormal activities, consistently putting it on the list of most haunted places in the Philippines.

Cemetery of Negativism

Located on a hill’s slope between Bell House and Camp John Hay Picnic Area, the Cemetery of Negativism (also called the Lost Cemetery) was commissioned in the early 1980s by the base’s commanding general John Hightower.

trip to baguio caption

But this cemetery is not the usual site for burying human bodies but rather a symbolic place for burying negativities. The tombstones were inscribed with witty and punny “eulogies” which may sometimes require a dash of sarcasm to understand.

One tombstone reads “Itz Not Possible”, conceived November 11, 1905 but “still not born”. Another one has “Know Dam Way” engraved on it, then below it, “Conceived New Years Eve 1910. Didn’t work out.”

If you are looking for something unique, funny, and inspiring at the same time, head over here and scare the bad vibes away.

Address: Historical Core, Camp John Hay, Baguio City Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P75. This fee also allows entrance to the Bell House.

Baguio Cathedral

trip to baguio caption

Baguio Cathedral , officially named Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral , is a hilltop cathedral overlooking Session Road and the busy downtown streets. It was launched in 1936 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

It follows a neo-Romanesque architectural style that features twin belfries/spires, a rose window (facade), and stained glass windows. It is one of the prominent landmarks in Baguio and is located beside Saint Louis University.

To access it from Session Road, visitors have to climb several steps, leading to the courtyard and the cathedral. Alternatively, you can go to Porta Vaga Shopping Mall and use the escalator leading to the cathedral’s courtyard.

Address: Our Lady Of Atonement Cathedral, Session Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: Tourists are welcome anytime but please be considerate when mass is ongoing. You can check the mass schedule on the official Facebook page. Entrance Fee: FREE

Ukay-Ukay Stores

Baguio won’t be Baguio without “SM” — Segunda Mano stores. These second-hand stores, locally called wagwagan but popularly called by tourists ukay-ukay , littered the busy streets and corners of downtown Baguio. Tourists will find themselves easily getting lost in the mountains of options for pre-loved items. The pieces vary — clothing, bags, shoes, belts, scarves, and others.

Honestly, the wide range of choices can get really overwhelming. But if you have the patience and the stamina (haha), you might dig up some vintage and rare items. The popular ukay-ukay areas are Skyworld (Session Road), Hilltop (at the back of Baguio City Market), and Bayanihan (near Burnham Park). You’ll also find some, well, good finds, at the night market!

Happy bargain hunting!

Session Road Nightlife

Session Road

One of the city’s major arteries, Session Road is the most famous street in Baguio. It is abuzz with locals and tourists going about their business during the day, but it becomes livelier at night as bars and hangout places pulsate with good music and great conversations.

If you want to have dinner first before losing yourself in music and booze with friends and maybe new acquaintances, Session Road hosts numerous international restaurants and fast-food restaurants.

But if you want to try the local offerings, it is also home to several homegrown restaurants including Sizzling Plate, Ocha Asian Restaurant, Vizco’s Restaurant, Volante, Oh My Gulay, and Drop Out, among others.

Baguio Public Market

Baguio Public Market

For pasalubong, make your way to the Baguio Public Market, which houses countless stalls selling products that are synonymous with the region — fresh strawberries and Sagada oranges, strawberry and ube jams, peanut brittle, fresh vegetables, and souvenirs!

And of course, grab a walis tambo!

trip to baguio caption

There’s something about Baguio’s walis tambo that makes it consistently land in the top items of pasalubong from the city. For some reason, my mom and aunts never fail to buy one when we’re in Baguio or request it from loved ones visiting Baguio. I asked my mom about it and she casually told me that the walis tambo from Baguio is sturdier and thicker.

LEONARD WOOD & MINES VIEW Tourist Spots

In this section are attractions situated northwest of the city center, usually reached by taking the Leonard Wood Road.

Baguio Botanical Garden

trip to baguio caption

One of the many green spaces in the city, the Baguio Botanical Garden (renamed Centennial Park) is located between Wright Park and Teacher’s Camp, along Leonard Wood Road.

This is another popular attraction in the city where visitors can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the verdant surroundings. The extensive garden park is just a short drive from Baguio’s Central Business District. It has many walking paths where you can see many photo-worthy spots. It also harbors the Baguio Arts Guild and the Igorot Village.

Address: 37, Leonard Wood Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE

Wright Park

trip to baguio caption

Another vast greenery is the Wright Park , named after the former Governor-General Luke Edward Wright.

This is a favorite leisure spot for both locals and tourists. It’s a lush park that offers walking and jogging trails, biking paths, and rest spots. It features a long pond or pool that almost covers the whole stretch of concrete path linking the Wright Park Kiosk and The Mansion facade. It also has a pine tree-covered forest hill adjacent to the horse stable.

If you want to go horseback riding in Baguio, Wright Park provides quite a number of horses to choose from, plus it’s not too far from the city center.

Address: Wright Park, Pacdal Circle, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE Horseback Riding Rate: P200 for 7 rounds

The Mansion

Wright Park’s long concrete path with a pool leads to the gate of the Mansion House , popularly referred to as The Mansion. It was commissioned in 1908 to serve as the official residence of the US Governor-General in the Philippines. It underwent reconstruction in 1947 after sustaining huge damage during the Second World War.

trip to baguio caption

Presently, it functions as the official summer palace of the President of the Philippines. It is also the site for other important state functions and international gatherings.

Address: The Mansion, Baguio-Bua-Itogon Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 24/7 (Mansion Gate). Most of the time, the Mansion is closed to the public, so visitors can only get a glimpse of the actual mansion from the entrance gate.

Mines View Park

Usually crowded with hordes of tourists, Mines View Park is definitely one of the most popular tourist spots. My local friends say that this is more like a tourist trap, but we’re tourists so go check it out still and see why it’s popular in the first place.

It features an observation deck that presents a panoramic view of the former gold and copper mines of Itogon town below and the mountains beyond. This is also one of the best spots for sunrise watching.

If you want to avoid the crowd, go there early in the morning. The place is peppered with numerous shops, stalls, and peddlers selling souvenir items, clothes, trinkets, food, and even plants! The entrance to the park is located along Gibraltar Road.

Plant sellers also abound in the area. Baguio’s chilly atmosphere makes it favorable for growing plants — flowering, herbs, and ornamental. The wide range of choices will make veteran and newbie plantitos and plantitas go gaga over these bloom and foliage babies.

Address: Mines View Park, Gibraltar Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM. The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: P10 (Adult); P5 (Children)

Good Shepherd Products

Not far from Mines View Park is a place where you can get the famous ube jam . It’s a quintessential pasalubong stop in Baguio where tourists willingly wait in line for the signature ube jam and other favorite products.

Good Shepherd Baguio

What makes buying from Good Shepherd special and fulfilling is its advocacy. Good Shepherd has built a good reputation for producing quality products for a cause. So where does your money go? Check the packaging (usually printed on the lid): “You help send us to college each time you buy our products”. The proceeds will be used to help send the Cordillera youth to college.

Other products are strawberry jam (seasonal), blueberry jam (seasonal), peanut cluster, cashew brittle, lengua , snowballs, angel cookies, choco flakes, alfajor cookies, banana chips, sampaloc candy, and more. There’s a strict ordering system — write down your orders first, queue, and hand over your order and payment to the attendant.

Also, don’t forget to try some of their Take Out Products which are basically snack/merienda items. Note that the lines can get too long during the peak season and there is an order limit per person. When they products are sold out, they close the site (like during our last visit).

Address: Good Shepherd Convent, 15 Gibraltar Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE

CULINARY ATTRACTIONS

Sample local dishes.

Baguio takes pride in its robust local culinary scene. Making the most of the abundance of ingredients, the locals came up with lots of innovative ways to create dishes and food products that embody the Cordillera region and neighboring Ilocos region, whose influence also seeps into the city.

Many of these dishes are available at various restaurants and eateries around Baguio. Some of the most well-known are pinikpikan (chicken soup), pinuneg (blood sausage) and kinuday (smoked meat), as well as dinakdakan (boiled, sliced and grilled pig’s head parts) and bagnet (deep-fried pork).

Pinuneg and kinuday

But if you want to sample a lot of delicacies at once, head over to The Farmer’s Daughter Restaurant , situated just next to Tam-awan Village. They serve mostly Cordilleran and Ilocano fare, prepared traditionally.

If you prefer a more modern twist, Cafe by the Ruins is an established name in the city’s food scene.

Local restaurants also add their Baguio twist to other Pinoy favorites. Mines View Park Hotel’s ZENZ Bar and Restaurant serves strawberry sinigang and strawberry adobo.

Strawberry Sinigang by ZENZ Bar

You can also go food tripping at the night market, Burnham Park, Ili-Likha, Good Shepherds, and Session Road, just to name a few.

Oh My Gulay Artist Cafe

Oh My Gulay

You might be thinking, Oh My Gulay is a local restaurant. Why does it have its own entry? Well, if you’ve been to this art cafe, you know it deserves its own spot!

Nestled on the top floor of an old building along Session Road, I was not expecting anything for that day’s lunch stop. And to be honest, I was not too excited at first because I’m not really into vegetables. But when I took the last flight of stairs, boy was I blown away by the quirky interiors and decorations! It was like being transported into a secret, mystical world. And the indoor garden setting has its own small pond, too!

Inside Oh My Gulay!

The restaurant has two-level dining areas. The upper level has two separate sections connected by a short wooden hanging bridge. The lower-level dining area has indoor seatings as well as veranda seatings with a view of the city. A collaboration of Oh My Gulay and Vocas, the place also features exhibit areas for local artists. As the name of the restaurant suggests, it serves affordable vegetarian and vegan meals.

Oh My Gulay's Vegetarian Bistek and Sliders

Address: 108 Session Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Monday, Wednesday – Thursday); 11:30 AM – 7:30 PM (Friday – Sunday); CLOSED (Tuesdays). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting.

Ili-Likha Artist’s Wateringhole

Lying along Assumption Road is the very peculiar Ili-Likha Artist’s Wateringhole , also known as Ili-Likha Artist Village . It was built by artist and filmmaker Eric de Guia (Kidlat Tahimik), who transformed a vacant lot into this whimsical treehouse-themed food park in 2014.

trip to baguio caption

The place highlights the importance of preserving nature and culture through arts and food. It is an evolving work of art with several interesting corners and iconic features like the mosaic-covered staircase.

The homegrown restaurants serve healthy, preservative-free, and organic food. Some of the restaurants are Balbacua, Leandro’s Bistro, Yomichee, Ibana, Little Milkyway Vegan Café, Oh My Gulay, Café Cueva, Kape Kullaaw, Waynu, Scout Burrows, and Natengan Ed Ili.

trip to baguio caption

It also houses arts and crafts shops and hosts different events and workshops. The whole place is photo-worthy and visitors will enjoy the relaxing and creative atmosphere.

Address: Ili-Likha Artists Village, 32 Assumption Road, Baguio City Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). The opening hours might change, so please check the official website or Facebook page before visiting. Entrance Fee: FREE

Baguio’s International Restaurants

Aside from the homegrown restaurants, Baguio also offers diverse international cuisines — Korean, Japanese, American, Chinese, and Vietnamese, to name a few. We will write a separate article about it with more details soon so watch out for that.

Baguio Craft Brewery and Craft 1945

Enough about food! How about some drinks? And by drinks, we mean beer!

If you are the type who likes hunting for local craft beers or you just want to have a chill dinner-and-beer type of night in Baguio, there are good watering holes in the city where you can quench your thirst for beer.

Baguio Craft Brewery is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. It offers a wide selection of craft beers, including its signature craft beers named after Ifugao’s mythic characters.

Craft 1945 , partly managed by Baguio Craft Brewery, is a Spanish-themed restaurant serving premium craft beers, tapas and other Spanish dishes.

Here are their addresses and operating hours.

Baguio Craft Brewery 4 Ben Palispis Highway, KM 4, Baguio City 5:00 PM – 12:00 AM (Monday – Friday) 1:00 PM – 12:00 AM (Saturdays & Sundays)

Craft 1945 9 Outlook Drive S, Baguio City 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Daily)

Reminder: The opening hours might change, so please check the official websites or Facebook pages before visiting.

Benguet Coffee

Coffee is everywhere in Baguio, and it’s not hard to score Benguet coffee when in town. The city’s high altitude and cooler temperature make it one of the best places in the Philippines to grow coffee.

Kape Umali

You can actually buy some at the public market or at cafés like Kape Umali , which is also the biggest coffee supplier in the province and other parts of northern Luzon. The café serves traditional brews as well as specialty brews like liquor coffee and gourmet coffee. Enjoy the music and appreciate artworks at the cafe’s gallery too! The three branches are located in Shangri-la Village, Mine’s View, and Baguio Market.

Ube and Strawberry Taho

Don’t you dare get out of Baguio without trying strawberry taho . They are everywhere, especially in the vicinity of popular tourist spots including Burnham Park, Session Road, and Mines View Park to name a few.

trip to baguio caption

Taho is a distinct Filipino snack made of silken soybean curd (tofu), brown sugar syrup, and tapioca (sago pearls). It’s traditionally served or peddled in the morning but nowadays, it can be consumed any time of the day, depending on availability.

Since strawberries are plenty in Baguio, the locals made their own version by replacing brown sugar syrup with strawberry syrup. And boy did they own it!

If you feel like you’ve had enough of strawberries, ube taho is also available.

Strawberry Ice Cream

trip to baguio caption

Still on the topic of putting a twist on regular snacks, the locals are really making the most of their strawberries by coming up with their own strawberry-flavored ice cream. Fine, strawberry ice cream is not new to the market BUT the ones in Baguio taste different. And we mean in a good way.

For us, the best that we’ve tried are those sold at La Trinidad Strawberry Farm. But if you are pressed for time, you can easily find it in downtown Baguio.

Detailed Baguio travel guide with DIY Baguio itinerary with budget including places to see in Baguio.

Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines, has a timeless appeal. This bustling city on the foot of the Cordillera is geographically part of Benguet province, but now operates separately since its conversion to a chartered city. Baguio is largely known as a Tourist Town , attracting hordes of tourists due to its cool weather, pine trees,  artsy-man-made attractions, museums, street arts, and neighboring flower farms and misty mountains. Baguio is also a popular University Town due to the presence of major universities and community colleges in the city. Even Koreans flock to Baguio  to study because of its good reputation as the education capital of Northern Philippines, and cool climate. Koreans even participate in the annual Panagbenga Festival, the largest flower festival in the Philippines.

ABOUT BAGUIO

Baguio City that we see today was actually established by the Americans as a hill station, largely evident are some tourist spots here with American names like Camp John Hay and Burnham Park.   But long before the arrival of the invaders, Baguio City was already inhabited by the Kankana-ey and Ibaloi indigenous peoples of the Cordillera Region, an area known as Kafagway back then.

Today, Baguio where the old and new cultures thrive harmoniously.  Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a repeat visitor, Baguio has something to offer for you. If you plan on traveling to Baguio soon, here’s a comprehensive Baguio Travel Guide with sample Baguio Itinerary for 4 days 3 nights and 3 days 2 nights for you.

BAGUIO ITINERARY: IFUGAO WOMEN

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BAGUIO

Baguio is a year-round destination. But if you want to visit during the coldest months, try December to January. February is peak season for Baguio due to the month-long celebration of its flower festival – Panagbenga Festival. It is also a good month to visit due to the activities during this season, but hotels are usually priced higher during February.

Breathe Baguio Tour (Join Tour): RESERVE HERE

Baguio historical tour: reserve here, baguio cultural tour with easter weaving: book here, baguio instagram walking tour: reserve here, northern blossoms flower farm tour: book here.

Here’s a sample Baguio Itinerary for 2 days. I included the entrance fees on the expenses. I will write a more detailed Baguio Itinerary blog soon.

BAGUIO DRONE

Be careful when flying your drone in Baguio as it is strictly prohibited in some areas, permission might be required from CEPMO. Avoid flying near Loakan Airport, PMA and other military areas, the central business district (avoid residentials buildings), avoid flying in Camp John Hay, the Mansion, and Wright Park.

BAGUIO SAFETY

Baguio is generally tourist friendly and safe even for solo travelers. I have traveled here lone many times in the past, and I’ve always felt safe even when riding taxis alone. Taxi drivers will really give you the exact change, they’re honest, unlike many taxi drivers in Manila.  But as in any other areas, be vigilant in dark places and crowded streets. There are cases of pickpocketing and robberies in Baguio already.

Baguio is a smoke-free city and is pretty strict in prohibiting smoking and vaping in all public places, including parks and other outdoor areas. Smoking is only allowed in establishments with permits to operate smoking area.

WHERE TO STAY IN BAGUIO

Baguio is oozing with accomodations for all types of budget, so you won’t really run out of places to stay, even during the Panagbenga Festival season. I recommend staying near Burnham Park or Session Road as it is near many establishments.

However, most of the newer hotels in Baguio are located outside the downtown area. And they’re usually your best option for mid-range hotels. Anyway, you can easily reach downtown Baguio via taxi or Grab. Expect to pay roughly ₱65 ($1.15) for a taxi to the city center.

Here are some of the top-rated hotels in Baguio.

  • Sotogrande Hotel Baguio
  • Location: Baguio City Proper
  • CHECK RATES HERE OR RESERVE HERE

Stayed in Sotogrande Hotel last time. This is a new hotel. Room has enough space to move around. Their breakfast buffet is pretty generous. They have an in-house restaurant, and I like their crispy pata, pizza and pasta. For dessert, try their sansrival cake.

  • The Forest Lodge at Camp John Hay
  • Location: Camp John Hay

Stayed here before and I really like the cozy lobby of this hotel as well as the restaurant. Rooms are spacious too. Food at the restaurant is just okay.

  • G1 Lodge Design Hotel
  • Paladin Hotel
  • Location: Baguio City Proper (near Burnham Park)
  • The Orchard Hotel Baguio

 HOW TO GET TO BAGUIO

VICTORY LINER BUS TO BAGUIO

1.From Manila, take a bus bound for Baguio. Victory Liner has buses to Baguio from Cubao and Pasay. Alternatively, you may also take Genesis Bus or Joy Bus to Baguio. Regular Aircon Express bus fare from Baguio to Cubao is roughly ₱626 ($11.14), while from Pasay to Baguio bus fare is around ₱640 ($11.39). See Victory Liner Bus fare below.

VICTORY LINER BUS FARE  (Cubao to Baguio)

*If you are traveling on a Friday night or over the weekend via Victory Liner, make sure you buy your ticket in advance as the line can get pretty long.  It took us 2.5 hours as chance passenger to ride the bus to Baguio. Otherwise, go to the other bus companies like Genesis and Joy Bus, they also have terminals in Cubao and Pasay.

If you are traveling in group, you may want to consider renting a van to Baguio from Manila, Tagaytay, La Union, Baguio, and more.

PRIVATE VAN TRANSFER (MANILA TO BAGUIO): BOOK HERE

Getting around baguio, baguio by tour package.

If you want a hassle-free tour of Baguio, there are several  DOT-accredited tour operators in Baguio. It is best to book a tour with them. If your time is limited,  you can also book a day tour from Manila to Baguio. SEE THE TOURS ABOVE THIS BLOG UNDER BAGUIO TRIP ESSENTIALS.

BAGUIO BY TAXI

Touring by taxi in Baguio is also a good option,  that’s because taxi drivers in Baguio are generally honest, they would use the meter and give you the exact exchange.  The current flag down rate is roughly ₱40 ($0.72) for the first 500 meters, with ₱2 ($0.040) per 100 meter increments thereafter.  Baguio taxi tour rate depends on how many hours you plan to tour Baguio.  Usual rate per day now for hiring a taxi in Baguio for 1 day is ₱3,500 ($62.94) to ₱4,000 ($71.93)  that’s good for 3-4 people and tour is from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

BAGUIO BY JEEPNEY

It is possible to get around in Baguio by jeepney. The starting rate for the classic jeepney is ₱13 ($0.23).  This is good if you want to do a DIY Baguio Travel, but make sure you know the Baguio jeepney routes (which is quite confusing) to avoid getting lost.  There’s also the airconditioned jeep now in Baguio but I haven’t tries riding it yet.

You can also hire a jeepney in Baguio to see some of the new Baguio tourist spots, as well as the classic destinations if you are a large group, say group of 10 or more. There’s a jeepney terminal just outside Victory Liner, you may ask the drivers for per day rate.

Baguio Will Always Be Baguio

Posted by Lonely Travelogue | Jul 20, 2015 | Benguet

Baguio Will Always Be Baguio

There are places that you’ve been to and that place seems like a magnet to your soul that you keep on coming back. I’ve got that place in my heart and that is Baguio City. I always hear the pine trees calling me whenever there is a feeling deviated from my normal state – that takes place most of the time.   One Saturday morning, without thinking of any work on Monday, with nothing more than the clothes I wear, and nothing to capture the moment but only my smart phone, we hopped in a bus at Victory Station in Cubao  and dreamed while my eyes were open looking at the sceneries going up to Baguio. Its going to be a long and butt numbing bus ride but who cares I love long travels. I’ve got nothing but my expectations and hope for a cool and nice weekend in Baguio.

When we arrived in Baguio, we took a cab going to Teacher’s Camp – a rather hunted place for the many but a perfect retreat place for dreary being like me. You will sleep in a decades old rooms or dormitories, with lush of pine trees, and sweet hum of the myna in the morning – that’s what will you experience in Teacher’s Camp. It was my first time to stay in Teacher’s Camp and I prefer this place than any overprice old hotels in the noisy Session Road . If you want Baguio stay at Teacher’s Camp.   We took a nap and decided to see the night in Baguio along Harrison Road – you know what I mean.

Its the Night Market!

trip to baguio caption

You won’t go to Baguio to shop for hand down clothes from Hong Kong, but why not? This seems to be an attraction in Baguio during the weekends nowadays.    Jackets, Bags, footwear, jeans, shirts, polo, belts —- everything is sold in the night market. I bought two nice sweater out of impulse for Php25.00 each. Anything more than Php30, I will not buy it. For the purposes of being thrifty at that moment. Aside from the clothes and related stuff, stalls of food items are also present. Your tummy can also do shopping of food – aka food trip.    The next day all I wanted was a cup of “taho” strawberry flavor of course.

trip to baguio caption

We spend some time in Mines View Park for where you suppose to see the mountain ranges of Benguet if there is no fog covering the vista. We sat for  a while and contemplated the changes in that once pristine park. I remember a picture of mine riding a horse with cow boy hat. That picture was taken in the 90′ when Mines View Park is not yet dominated by a lot of souvenir shops that looks like a flee market, when there were no big dogs that are overly domesticated by man’s unlimited need of money, when Mines View is just like a park, that picture was the faded glory of the Mines View Park.   I bought a piece of buttered corn sprinkled with salt for our long walk to The Mansion . But not reaching the half way to the Mansion we saw a jeep and instinctively we hopped in it.

The Mansion 2015

trip to baguio caption

The Mansion 2009   We walk through Wright Park along with other tourist strolling and some, I presume,  residents of Baguio jogging beside the man-made lagoon. On its sides are manicured plants and flowers that can only be seen in cold places like Baguio. It was refreshing to see a  lot of blooming fresh flowers in the park. It makes me want to be there just to smell the aroma of the flowers, the  leaves and the trees.

trip to baguio caption

We took a taxi to the public market in preparation for lunch but it turned out a window shopping for souvenirs and pasalubong back home. Walking in the market where organized stalls owners constantly singing their goods to the tourist strolling. I observed two things in the market, first everything is over price – same goods sold at Teachers Camp are much cheaper; and  initial prices will depend on your face value – they know that you are not from Baguio ergo prices are souring like a bird. I am not into too much haggling, but I guess you can discern the real value of a good.

trip to baguio caption

I bought a vest with Igorot design for Php200.00 (original price was Php250.00). The intricate design, was similar to the “bahag” I used for our field demnstration when I was in Grade 2. Back then, I do not like the these kind of clothing. But as I travel in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia, I came to love our identity. Upon digging in our rich heritage and culture, I found out that our diversed culture is beautiful and unique.

trip to baguio caption

Proudly wearing my Igorot vest, we walked to Burnham Park just to see the park. We’ve been there a many times in the last few years but we just want a glimpse of it and probably observe the people enjoying the park. After some time of staying there my two companion wanted to go back to Teachers Camp and enjoy the cold weather of Baguio on their bed. Me on the other hand went further to the City Hall. The Baguio City Hall  is another symbol of cultural identity of the city. It is a protected area and was declared a national cultural treasure.    I entered the City Hall and read its financial reports posted in the bulletin. I found out that Baguio City has an Internal Revenue Allotment of a little more than Php100 Million, just enough to feed the family of the civil servants of Baguio City.    I went up furher for my real agenda. I wanted to reach the clock tower and from there take an aerial view of the city or Burnham Park atleast. I reached the bell tower but I cannot open the steel gate… tsk… better luck next time.    After my sojourn in downtown Baguio I went to  Casa Vallejo  to watch an old film based from Nick Joaquin’s 1950’s play entitle  A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino . While waiting for the fillm, I swam in the rare titles of books in Mt. Cloud Bookstore and bought a collection of contemporary short stories.

trip to baguio caption

Bored and sleepy I left the small movie house in Casa Vallejo with the movie almost finished. I was walking down on the side of Court of Appeals resthouse when I bumped in my two companion heading towards where I came from.     I told them “lets have a hot chocolate” We took the taxi and headed to Chocolate de Batirol inside Camp John Hay.

trip to baguio caption

The next morning I wanted to walked around Teacher’s Camp before going back to Manila. Saying goodbye to the pinestrees, the birds and the air is never sad. The way of saying thank you to nature for making your spontaneous trip a memorable and inspiring one.

trip to baguio caption

I was amazed by the houses (rest house) inside Camp John Hay. There is a Pink Mansion in Poblete Drive that I tried to knock to see if I can enter and see its detailed architecture. I wanted to enter the unlocked gate but I pulled back and continued walking towards other houses in that area.

trip to baguio caption

Ending my weekend in Baguio lying under the pine trees looking at the sky was magical. Marvelous decade old trees are the treasures of Baguio City. Apart from Sesjsion Road’s restaurants, souvenirs of the public market, strawberries of La Trinidad, overlooking sight in the Mines View Park and the cold weather of the city, Baguio will always be Baguio because of the pine trees all over the city.

trip to baguio caption

This is not my last blog post about Baguio because I’ll keep on coming back to the city that I love. If there is a chance to relocate and build my own family in Baguio, I would gladly abide to my fate’s path. Only the Lord knows. For now let me show my love for Baguio because Baguio will always be Baguio.

trip to baguio caption

We brought our kids to Baguio for the first time. But I have visited Baguio numerous times, especially while I was growing up. We would be in Baguio practically every month throughout my childhood and when I was in my teen years. So I know Baguio very well.

As an adult, however, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve visited Baguio. And I can say so much has changed. It is no longer the Baguio of my youth, but thankfully, there are still pockets of beauty and charm that make Baguio still a worthwhile travel destination for families.

A Quick History of Baguio

Baguio City, also known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” was developed by the Americans during their occupation of the Philippines in the early 1900s. The Americans were looking for a suitable location to establish a hill station, where they could escape the heat and humidity of the lowlands. In 1900, the Americans selected the area of Baguio because of its cool climate, scenic beauty, and accessibility from Manila.

The development of Baguio began in 1901, with the construction of a road that connected the city to the lowlands. The Americans also built several buildings, including the Baguio Cathedral, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Baguio Teachers Camp, as well as a park system, including Burnham Park and Mines View Park. These structures and parks became important landmarks of the city and are still popular tourist attractions today.

Baguio became a popular summer retreat for American officials and their families, as well as for wealthy Filipinos. Today, Baguio continues to attract tourists from all walks of life with its cool climate, stunning scenery, and rich cultural heritage. The city remains a popular destination for local and foreign tourists, even though its glory days are long gone.

Things to Do in Baguio With Kids

trip to baguio caption

Baguio is a great destination for families with kids. Maybe you’re asking, “What should I visit first in Baguio?” Well, here are some of the top things to do in Baguio with kids:

  • Visit Burnham Park: Burnham Park is a popular attraction for families with kids. It has a playground, a man-made lake where you can ride a boat or bike around it, and a picnic area. You can also enjoy horseback riding, roller skating, or simply strolling around the park. It can get crowded nowadays, so it’s best to go early morning or during the off-peak season. Explore on your own or take this Burnham Park walking tour .
  • Explore Mines View Park: Mines View Park is another popular attraction in Baguio. It offers a great view of the Cordillera Mountains and the surrounding valleys. Your kids will enjoy the experience of seeing and interacting with the horses, the local Igorot people in traditional clothing, and souvenir vendors. Went we went, it was packed but not constricting. We did force our kids to take souvenir photos on a horse because why not? Mines View Park and the surrounding area are good places to buy plants, flowers, homegrown delicacies, and gifts.
  • Learn at the Tam-Awan Village: Tam-Awan Village is a cultural village that showcases the traditional lifestyle and customs of the Igorot people. Families can learn about the indigenous culture, watch cultural performances, and see traditional houses made of wood and bamboo. We couldn’t visit Tam-Awan Village, though, for lack of time.
  • Go on a strawberry-picking adventure: Strawberry-picking is a fun activity that families can enjoy together in Baguio. The nearby town of La Trinidad is known for its strawberry farms, and you can visit these farms to pick fresh strawberries. We went to Baguio in April, which unfortunately wasn’t picking season, so we skipped this. But my wife and I have been here before, so we can say it’s definitely a must-do in Baguio.
  • Go horseback riding at Wright Park: Wright Park is a beautiful park in Baguio that offers horseback riding activities for kids and families. You can rent horses and enjoy a ride around the park. When we went there, however, it was super packed, and no place to park. Sadly, some horses had their manes painted in rainbow colors, which we thought was not cool. We decided to go horseback riding in Camp John Hay instead.

Where to Go in Baguio with Kids

Baguio is a great destination for families with kids. There are many places to go in Baguio that are kid-friendly:

  • Burnham Park: The park covers an area of 32.84 hectares and features a picturesque man-made lake surrounded by lush trees and gardens. There are plenty of things to do, such as boating, biking, and skating. You can have a picnic as well. I loved Burnham Park as a kid, but sadly, it’s much more crowded these days. Went we went with our kids, we just drove around the area as parking was impossible, the rain started to pour, and the huge crowds discouraged us. But if you’ve never been, add Burnham Park to your Baguio family itinerary.
  • Mines View Park: This park is known for its panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys, including a glimpse of the mining town of Itogon. There’s a viewing deck that overlooks the breathtaking landscape, where you can take photos, shop for souvenirs, and even rent traditional Cordillera costumes for a unique photo-op. Our kids refused to wear the costumes but agreed to sit on a horse for their souvenir photos. You can also ride horseback and feed native animals like horses and St. Bernard dogs.
  • Tam-Awan Village: Tam-Awan Village is a cultural village that showcases the traditional lifestyle and customs of the Igorot people. You can learn about the indigenous culture, watch cultural performances, and see traditional houses made of wood and bamboo.
  • Strawberry Farms: Strawberry Farms are a collection of farms and gardens in La Trinidad Valley, just outside Baguio City. The farms are known for their picturesque strawberry fields, where you can handpick fresh strawberries and indulge in various strawberry treats like jam, taho (sweet tofu), and shakes. Apart from strawberries, the farms cultivate other fruits and vegetables, such as lettuce, carrots, and beans. So, this is a great place to buy produce.
  • Wright Park: The park is known for its scenic walking paths, lush gardens, and horseback riding activities. One of the main attractions in Wright Park is the “Pool of Pines,” a small rectangular pool lined with towering pine trees that reflects a picturesque view of the landscape. Horseback riding is also a popular activity in the park, where you can rent horses and ride around the designated areas of the park. We skipped this part and opted to go horseback riding in the less crowded and less stressful Camp John Hay. However, it just goes round and round a track while Wright Park would have more interesting paths.
  • Session Road: This famous commercial thoroughfare is a bustling hub of activity, lined with various shops, restaurants, cafes, and entertainment establishments. You can stroll along the road and explore its many offerings, from souvenir shops and bookstores to cinemas and nightclubs. Be warned that it’s very busy, and only a few sections retained their original charming architecture.
  • Baguio Botanical Garden: The nature park features a diverse collection of plant species, including flowers, herbs, trees, and ornamental plants. You can explore various sections, such as the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden, and the American Garden, each with unique designs and themes. The garden also has a pond, a small waterfall, and a wooden footbridge that adds to its serene and peaceful ambiance.
  • Philippine Military Academy Museum: The Philippine Military Academy Museum is an excellent destination for youngsters interested in science and history. Learn about military science, weapons, and other interesting artifacts. You can also watch the changing of the guards.
  • Baguio Night Market: The Baguio Night Market is a great place for families to experience the local culture and try out local food. The market features many products, including handicrafts, souvenirs, and street food. But the crowds might deter you, and parking can be a problem. We bought our souvenirs around Mines View Park instead, which was not as crowded.
  • Camp John Hay: There are a variety of things to do in Camp John Hay , including hiking through pine forests and enjoying the stunning views, and visiting the Tree Top Adventure Park for some adrenaline-pumping activities.

We’ve been to practically all these places over the years, but during our last visit, we only went to Mines View Park and drove around Burnham Park, Wright Park, and Session Road. We spent most of our time at Camp John Hay.

Sadly, much of Baguio has lost its charm. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, Baguio was clean and much less crowded. Session Road had a charming feel of a small American town. There was not a lot of traffic, and walking around was a pleasure. Even popular places like Burnham Park and Wright Park are no longer as pleasant.

There is one place that has retained its beauty, cleanliness, and charm: Camp John Hay.

What to Do in Camp John Hay with Family

trip to baguio caption

Camp John Hay is a former military base turned commercial and recreational complex in Baguio. We’re happy that it has been well-maintained, remaining an oasis in the city that’s not overrun by overdevelopment. Here are some of the things to do in Camp John Hay :

  • Nature walks and hiking: Camp John Hay has several trails and nature paths that are perfect for a leisurely stroll or an invigorating hike. The Yellow Trail, for instance, is a 3-kilometer walk that winds through pine forests and provides a stunning view of the city. We enjoyed just strolling along the hills and sidewalks and taking in the fresh air, cool breeze, and the beauty of the pine trees.
  • Tree Top Adventure: This adventure park offers zip lines, a tree drop, and other thrilling activities. We decided to skip this as we went to Baguio for a relaxing vacation, so we just wanted to chill and eat good food. However, Tree Top Adventure is a great option for those seeking an adrenaline rush.
  • Historical tours: Camp John Hay has a rich history worth exploring. You can join a historical tour to learn about the military legacy of the area, as well as the environmental restoration efforts that have taken place.
  • Golf: The Camp John Hay Golf Course is an 18-hole golf course surrounded by pine trees and beautiful scenery. It’s a great option for golf enthusiasts looking for a challenging course.
  • Shopping: There are several shops and boutiques in Camp John Hay where you can purchase local handicrafts, souvenirs, and other goods. Unfortunately, the iconic Mile-Hi Center is now a sad shadow of its former self. I remember playing arcade games and eating American hotdogs and ice cream as a kid. Even when the Americans left and the retail center was taken over by homegrown cafes and restaurants, it was still a must-visit destination up until several years ago. No longer. Sigh.
  • Dining: Camp John Hay and its surrounding areas have several restaurants and cafes that offer a range of local and international cuisine. The restaurants are perfect for a casual lunch or a romantic dinner. Le Chef at The Manor is the most famous.
  • Picnicking: There are several picnic spots in Camp John Hay, including The Meadow and the Butterfly Sanctuary, which are perfect for a family picnic.

Baguio City is known for its vibrant food scene, with a range of dining options that cater to different tastes and budgets. It may have lost its glory days as a tourist attraction, but it has become a mecca for foodies. Here are some of the restaurants we ate at in Baguio City:

  • Craft 1945 – We love the industrial-style interior with exposed brick walls and vintage decor. It serves a variety of Filipino and international cuisine, as well as craft beer and cocktails. We enjoyed the paella, lengua, callos, and kalderetang baka.
  • Lemon and Olives – This Greek taverna is a must-eat place in Baguio. It has a very modern, homey decor and fantastic outdoor seating with awesome views. We loved the traditional Greek dishes such as hummus, souvlaki, gyros, lamb rack, moussaka, and grilled octopus. The desserts were delicious too!
  • Hill Station – This is a famous fine dining restaurant that serves international cuisine, with a great selection of wine and cocktails. I had a date night with my wife here, where we enjoyed gambas, roast beef, crispy belly pork, and the romantic ambiance and colonial decor.
  • Amare La Cucina – Our kids loved the pizza, pasta, and gelato. The restaurant features a cozy and charming interior with vintage Italian decor, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. It serves authentic Italian dishes, including handmade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and traditional Italian desserts.
  • Agara Ramen – Agara Ramen is a popular ramen place offering classic tonkotsu ramen, miso ramen, and spicy tantanmen. We ordered tantanmen, chuka soba, and karaage. The place is small and sits only eight diners. Parking is a challenge, but we went anyway and we’re happy we did.
  • Bulalo Joint – We were craving for bulalo but wanted to eat it somewhere, uhm, clean. My dad used to bring us when we were kids to a slaughterhouse called Balajadia, which served the richest, tastiest bulalo and bistek. But it was out of the way, and my girls were not too keen when I described the place. So I found Bulalo Joint, a small but clean and modern joint that served pretty decent bulalo and crunchy chicharon bulaklak, 2 orders which my kids devoured.

Growing up, we frequented Solibao, Rose Bowl, and Mario’s Restaurant. But we decided to try restaurants we’d never eaten at before. Baguio City has many other great dining options as well, so be sure to explore the city’s vibrant food scene during your visit. We enjoyed our food trip the most in our Baguio family itinerary, making the 3.5-hour drive worth it.

  • Hat or cap: Protect yourself from the sun and keep your head warm by wearing a hat or a cap.

  • Warm clothing: Although Baguio has a cool climate, it can get chilly, especially during the early morning and late evening. It’s a good idea to bring warm clothing such as sweaters, jackets, or coats to keep you comfortable.

Best Month to Visit Baguio

Baguio’s climate is generally cool and pleasant throughout the year due to its high altitude. Still, there are certain times of the year when the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities and sightseeing. We went in early April when it was slightly warm but breezy and occasionally rainy during the day and chilly at night. Here are some things to consider when deciding when to go to Baguio:

  • Peak season: The peak season in Baguio is from December to February when the weather is coldest and the city is most crowded. This is a popular time for tourists to visit and for local residents to escape the heat in the lowlands.
  • Summer season: The summer months from March to May are also a good time to visit Baguio, as the temperature is milder than in other parts of the country, making it a popular destination for summer vacations.
  • Rainy season: The rainy season in Baguio is from June to October, with occasional typhoons hitting the city. However, the rains are usually not too heavy, and this season can be a good time to visit if you prefer a quieter and less crowded atmosphere.
  • Festivals: Baguio has several festivals throughout the year, such as the Panagbenga Festival in February, a colorful celebration of flowers and cultural traditions. The festival attracts a lot of tourists, so it is advisable to book accommodations early.

How Many Days Do You Need in Baguio?

Is 3 days enough for Baguio? The length of your stay in Baguio depends on your personal preferences and interests. If you plan to visit the city’s main attractions and do some outdoor activities, a minimum of 2-3 days is recommended. This will give you enough time to explore the city, visit popular tourist spots, and experience the local culture and cuisine.

Here are some factors to consider when deciding how long to stay in Baguio:

  • Your itinerary: If you have a list of attractions and activities that you want to see and do in Baguio, consider how long it will take to cover them all. Make sure to allocate enough time for each attraction and activity.
  • Your pace: Some people prefer to take their time and explore each attraction in-depth, while others prefer to cover as much ground as possible. Determine your preferred pace and adjust your itinerary accordingly.
  • Weather and season: Baguio’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to consider the season when planning your trip. If you are planning to do outdoor activities, make sure to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.
  • Other factors: If you are traveling with kids or elderly family members, you may need to allocate more time for rest breaks and slower-paced activities.

Overall, a stay of 2-3 days in Baguio is a good starting point, but you can extend or shorten your stay based on your personal preferences and interests. Personally, given that it took over 3 hours to drive from Manila to Baguio, we wanted to make the most of our trip by staying at least 3 full days.

Our Baguio Itinerary for Our Family

We spent 3-and-a-half days and 3 nights in Baguio. Since it’s a 3.5-hour drive away, we wanted to make the most of our mini-vacation. Our goal was to have a relaxing trip where we could hang out in our hotel and eat our way around Baguio, plus show our daughters some of the popular tourist sites we enjoyed as kids. Below was our actual itinerary:

  • Arrive in Baguio in the morning (we were pleasantly surprised the drive was smooth and fast thanks to the interconnected highways)
  • Have lunch at Cafe 1945 (delicious Spanish food, craft beer, and hip ambiance)
  • Check in at The Manor at Camp John Hay (still the best hotel in Baguio) and just chill in the room
  • Eat dinner at Amare La Cucina (yummy woodfire brick over pizza and gelato)
  • Explore Camp John Hay
  • Eat lunch at Lemon and Olives Greek Taverna (go early, it fills out fast for a good reason)
  • Head over to Mines View Park (enjoy the view and buy souvenirs)
  • Have dinner at Agara Ramen (also go early, because it’s just an 8-seater place, and parking is hard to get)
  • Buy some drinks at the nearby Rustan’s for drinks to bring to the hotel (cold beer is great to drink at The Manor balcony at night)
  • Explore the city center (we drove along Session Road and around Burnham Park and Wright Park; we gave up because we couldn’t find parking; we spent the morning lamenting to our kids that Baguio isn’t what it used to be growing up)
  • Go horseback riding in Camp John Hay (definitely a much more relaxing experience than the chaos in Wright Park)
  • Have lunch at Bulalo Joint (hello, cholesterol!)
  • Explore the grounds of The Manor and have some hot choco at the cafe
  • Enjoy dinner at Hill Station (nice ambiance, good food)
  • Have breakfast at the hotel (we had Baguio longganisa from Enriquez delivered and bought Baguio Country Club’s famous banana bread)
  • Check out of the hotel
  • Have lunch at Shakey’s (we were in a rush to go home to avoid the traffic and before it got dark)
  • Take a detour at Victor’s Barbeque & Lechon Manok in Tarlac for the best Kampampangan sisig (we got 12 orders to go; I grew up on the original Victor’s outlet in Dau)

If broken hearts go to Sagada, do healing hearts go to Baguio?

BAGUIO.png

Dubbed as the “City of Pines”, Baguio City remains one of the top destinations for tourists for a quick getaway or for those who want to unwind from the busy city. We couldn’t agree more about it! The place is famous for its greenery, famous attractions and activities that you’ll enjoy with your family, loved ones or with just as your friend.

Sadly, Baguio City government has again closed its doors to non-residents traveling for leisure or other non-essential purposes from September 3 until 19, as COVID-19 cases spike again.

Baguio, soon!

In the meantime, here are some Instagram-worthy tourist spots in Baguio that you can visit soon!

1. Twin Glass Treehouse at Tudor in the Pines

This is probably the best spot for meditation after all the burnout you’ve endured in the city. This twin glass treehouse is located in Tudor in the Pines and is the most interesting cottage area here. Tucked away in the groves of Baguio’s signature pine trees, you’ll never stop dreaming of things you could do and see there.

You should never miss staying at night as these Nordic-inspired villas with glass ceilings offer a vantage point of the Northern lights. Imagine how romantic this spot is while lying down and seeing the night glimmer before your eyes.

2. BenCab Museum

For art enthusiasts, this place is for you. BenCab Museum features works of Philippine National Artist Benedictor Reyes Cabrera. It also serves as a venue to promote and preserve arts with premium collections, from both new and master Filipino artists. The museum also has interesting galleries with various themes from erotica to contemporary art.

After that immersive art experience, stop for a cup of coffee at Café Sabel, their in-house coffee shop where you can relax and enjoy the scenic landscape and small pond surrounding the museum. With the peaceful view and unique atmosphere of the café, you’ll definitely want to revisit.

3. Tam-awan Village

If you want to get a glimpse of traditional Cordillera culture or you’re curious about the native culture of Baguio, this is your go-to place! The Tam-awan Village in Pinsao Proper, Baguio City is a colony of Ifugao houses that showcases arts and activities that are native to Cordillerans. This is also preserved and maintained by Cordilleran artists and it uniquely blends indigenous aesthetics and exquisite Cordilleran craftsmanship. It’s a bit far from the city but is surely well worth the effort. Level up the experience by renting a native hut!

4. StoBoSa Colorful Houses

The colorful houses of StoBoSa, consisting of three (3) sitios , Stonehill, Botiwtiw, and Sadjap, are some of the most photogenic spots in La Trinidad. This giant community mural project created with the local government, artists, Tourism department, and volunteers is inspired and conceptualized based on the vibrant favelas of Brazil. It is a gargantuan mural of colorful sunflowers painted using eco-friendly paint. You can never end your Baguio trip without getting out of your car and taking pictures of it.

5. Dominican Hill and Retreat House (Diplomat Hotel)

Fancy a ghost-hunt?

The two-story stone edifice Dominican Hill and Retreat House ( Diplomat Hotel ) depicts 19th-century architecture, built under the supervision of Dominican priest and engineer Roque Ruaño. Initially, it served as a vacation house for members of the Dominican Order, and then as a boarding house and college school. It later became a refugee center and prison camp during World War II, probably why it is said to be one of the most haunted places in the country due to its dark history.

Apart from its historical background, the structure was also recorded as the first earthquake-resistant building in Baguio and the first to have a rain-harvesting facility through its concrete roof deck.

6. Cafe by the Ruins

A trip to Baguio City wouldn’t be complete without a stopover at the famed rustic forest ambiance café, Cafe by the Ruins. You’ll definitely want to photograph every corner of this café from the artful pieces in the café corners, its bamboo fences, and wooden furniture that really adds charm to the place. It gives a serene feeling with the nature vibes. This is definitely a must-visit for romantic dining!

On top of the aesthetics and the supreme menu, it’s also historical. The “ruins” in the name refer to the previous site of the city’s first garden theater, an outdoor cinema that was built in 1912 by Hubert Phelps Whitmarsh. The location again became a ruins site when it was gutted after catching fire in April 2017.

Your Ultimate Budget Travel Guide to Baguio City: The Summer Capital of the Philippines

Table of Contents

N estled in Benguet’s vast mountains, Baguio City, the Summer Capital of the Philippines, uphold its picturesque mountain sceneries and breathtaking destinations tourists love to visit from time to time.

Discovered by the American colonizers in the 1900s, Baguio City has grown from a hill station for American soldiers into one of the country’s most popular and most visited tourist spots. Known for its cold climate, Baguio City endows its people with a biting cold, invigorating breeze, a perfect venue to escape the summer heat.

Christmas in Baguio City by Paul Louie Serrano

Baguio offers many attractions and destinations that showcase its rich heritage, indigenous culture, and thriving flora and fauna. Highly urbanized, it became the center of commerce, education, and tourism in Northern Luzon.

Commercialized as developments are fast transpiring, Baguio City still embodies the Cordilleran culture by representing it through traditions that are still widely celebrated through festivities and inculcating culture as a substantial part of modern society.

In this Baguio City Travel Guide blog, we listed a DIY trip itinerary and advice on how to get there, things to do and see, places to eat, best places to stay, tour packages, Baguio trip expenses, and more.

Baguio City Travel Guide and Budget Itinerary

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

The best time to visit Baguio City in the Philippines is typically during the dry season, which runs from November to April. This period offers cooler temperatures and less rainfall than the rest of the year. The city’s high elevation, around 1,540 meters (5,050 feet) above sea level, contributes to its cool climate.

Here’s a breakdown of the seasons and their characteristics in Baguio City:

  • Dry Season (November to April): This is the peak tourist season in Baguio. During this time, the weather is generally cool and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 15 to 23 degrees Celsius (59 to 73 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s an excellent time to explore the city’s attractions, enjoy outdoor activities, and experience the famous Panagbenga Festival in February.
  • Rainy Season (May to October): The rainy season in Baguio City is characterized by frequent rainfall and cooler temperatures. Packaging a raincoat or umbrella if you plan to visit during this time is advisable. While the rain can bring a refreshing atmosphere, it may limit outdoor activities and hinder some sightseeing opportunities.

Remember that Baguio City is a popular tourist destination, especially during weekends and holidays. If you prefer to avoid crowds, consider visiting on weekdays or outside major local holidays. Additionally, checking weather forecasts before your trip is good, as the climate can vary yearly.

The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit Baguio City, offering comfortable temperatures and fewer rain chances.

How to Get There

From manila.

Air-conditioned bus trips to Baguio leave Manila daily on an hourly basis. Popular bus lines en route are Victory Liner, Partas, and Genesis, among others. One way bus ticket would cost you P400 – 450, and the travel time will be approximately 6-7 hours.

Some bus companies like Victory Liner (Deluxe) and Genesis (Joybus) offer luxury bus trips for a non-stop trip to Baguio that will take 3-4 hours. These buses have their own toilets, wifi, two TVs, wider seats that will allow you to recline fully to rest, and snacks and drinks offered by the bus stewardess. The fare rate is around P650 – 720.

If you use your car, it is best to take Marcos Highway to Baguio because it is safer than Kennon Road, which is sometimes closed due to maintenance.

Victory Liner, Telephone +63 2 727 4534, +63 2 833 5019 to 20, has an hourly bus service to Baguio from its Monumento Main terminal in Caloocan City, Cubao, and Pasay City Bus terminals.

Baguio City: Your complete weekend itinerary

Baguio’s cool climate is always a welcome respite from the lowlands’ heat and humidity any time of the year. For some, weekends in Baguio also bring back childhood memories, which often includes horseback riding at Wright Park or boat-paddling at Burnham Park. (READ: 15 amazing Baguio City eats )

MEMORIES. Another classic Baguio experience, horses can be rented and taken around the vicinity of Wright Park. Photo by Nikka Corsino

Although Baguio is admittedly more congested today, this mountain city still gives plenty of reasons for visitors to keep coming.

And if a weekend is all you can spare, here are some suggestions for a great time in and around the city:

DAY 1 (SATURDAY MORNING) – ART, CULTURE AND CLASSIC BAGUIO

TO MARKET, TO MARKET. Get the freshest highland vegetables from the Baguio City public market’s ‘bagsakan.' Photo by Owen Ballesteros

If you’re coming from Metro Manila, board a Baguio-bound bus from Cubao, Manila, or Pasay on Friday night. Midnight trips are the most advisable, where you arrive at around 5 am or 6 am. If possible, book your return trip as soon as you arrive since trips back to Metro Manila on weekends fill up fast.

Buses to take:

  • Victory Liner (Cubao, Quezon City; Pasay)
  • Genesis Transport (Avenida, Manila; Cubao, Quezon City)
  • Philippine Rabbit (Avenida, Manila)

Restaurants to try for breakfast:

If your hotel, inn, or guesthouse does not permit early check-in, while the hours away by having breakfast at any of the following local places:

Danes (Lower Mabini St.)

For those on a budget, Danes is a good place for hot pandesal and coffee. Frequented by locals, Danes serves freshly baked pastries every day.

Pizza Volante (Session Road)

For those who want a rather heavy breakfast, Pizza Volante along Session Road serves hearty and affordable continental and Filipino breakfast dishes. The restaurant is open 24 hours, making it a good choice for those who arrive in the wee hours of the morning.

Choco-late de Batirol (Camp John Hay)

Another breakfast option is Choco-late de Batirol, which serves rich, hot  tsokolate  (flavors include cointreau and strawberry, among others) and Filipino breakfast choices.

Visit the BenCab museum

Km. 6, Tuba, Benguet

BENCAB MUSEUM. Discover works of contemporary Filipino artists on display at the BenCab Museum in Tuba, Benguet. Photo by Owen Ballesteros

After checking in at your hotel, proceed to the BenCab Museum (opening hours: 9 AM to 5 PM, Tuesdays to Sundays). Entrance fee is at P100. (READ and WATCH: BenCab: Finding his muse in the highlands )

The BenCab Museum is home to works of National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto Cabrera as well as those of other local contemporary artists. The museum also has a Cordillera Gallery, which houses artifacts from all over the Cordillera region. The museum also holds exhibitions regularly.

Its in-house cafe, Cafe Sabel, serves gourmet pasta, sandwiches, and salads using local ingredients.

Tip for commuters:

Although there are jeepneys passing by the museum on the way back to Baguio, these are almost always full, making the trip back a bit tricky. You may instead negotiate a waiting fee with the cab driver who took you to the museum.

Drop by the woodcarvers’ village

WOODEN ART. Purchase woodcrafts big and small from the line of shops at the Wood Carvers’ Village, near the BenCab Museum. Photo by Owen Ballesteros

It may be too early to buy souvenirs, but the handmade wooden wares at the Wood Carvers’ Village, just a few meters from the BenCab Museum, may just persuade you to fork out your first few hundred pesos. Everything from dining sets to tissue holders to ebony chopsticks is sold here.

Watch international and local classics at Cinematheque Baguio

With admissions usually at P100 (or sometimes free), the Cinematheque Baguio allows the public to view internationally acclaimed indie films, documentaries (such as Rescue in the Philippines: Refuge from the Holocaust , produced by a team that includes Emmy Award-winning producer Russell Hodge and Terry Irving); and Filipino titles, such as those by Lino Brocka and Maryo J. de los Reyes.

Film festivals are also held regularly– the Franco-German Film Fest, Bangladesh Film Day, Spring Film Festival, Football Stories Film Series, Inquirer Indie Bravo: Film Festival, Cine Europa 17, and Cine Totoo Caravan are some of the film festivals held throughout 2014.

Check the Cinematheque Baguio Facebook page  regularly for screening schedules.

Explore Tam-Awan Village

Pinsao Proper, Baguio City

Should there be no screening at the Cinematheque on the day of your visit, you can head to Pinsao Proper instead for Tam-Awan Village.

Marrying the city’s rustic mountain ambience with original works from Cordillera artists, Tam-awan Village is perfect for those who want to learn more about the region’s indigenous art forms. The village also holds regular exhibitions, workshops, and cultural shows. Entrance fee for adults is at P50, senior citizens and students at P30, and kids 12 years and below at P20.

Visit the Baguio Museum

DROP BY. See artifacts as well as traditional everyday wares from the Cordillera’s different ethnolinguistic groups at the Cordillera Gallery of the Baguio Museum. Photo from baguiomuseum.org

If Tam-Awan Village is too far for you, opt for the conveniently located Baguio Museum instead along Governor Pack Road. This four-level museum features an extensive collection of artifacts and media about the different regions of the Cordillera: Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Apayao, and Abra. The museum also holds regular workshops and seminars, as well as a library for research and exhibit purposes.

The museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays, 9 AM to 5 PM. Adults enter for P40, senior citizens for P30, college students for P20, high school students for P15, and elementary students for P10. The Baguio Museum is at the DOT-PTA Complex along Governor Pack Road, near Sunshine Park and UP Baguio.

Restaurants to try for lunch:

For lunch, dine in one of the local restaurants along (or near) Session Road: Tea House (for Chinese-style dishes), Jack’s (for affordable rice meals), Solibao (for traditional Filipino fare), Hill Station (for some of Baguio’s best fine dining), Oh My Gulay (Kidlat Tahimik’s fascinating vegetarian restaurant), and the newly opened Cafe by the Ruins Dua (for hearty Asian Fusion dishes and freshly baked pastries).

If you’re dining at Hill Station, you may also check out the other establishments located inside the historic Casa Vallejo building, such as Mt. Cloud Bookshop for some select Cordillera titles, North Haven Spa for coffee or strawberry scrubs, and Baguio Cinematheque for screenings of Filipino films, old and indie.

MT CLOUD. Browse through books, including an extensive collection about the Cordillera region, at Mt. Cloud Bookshop. Photo by Rhea Claire Madarang

You may also try Japanese restaurant Chaya along Legarda Road, or Ketchup Food Community along Romulo Drive across Wright Park. Ketchup Food Community has 5 restaurants – Canto (for lomo ribs and burgers), Happy Tummy (for Thai food), Rumah Sate (for Malay and Indonesian food), Green Pepper (for pastas and sandwiches), and Rancho Norte (for home-cooked Filipino food).

Visit Baguio’s numerous parks

If you’re traveling with family, you’re most likely going to visit some beloved Baguio spots, such as Burnham Park, Botanical Garden, Wright Park, The Mansion, and Mines View Park.

BIKE RIDE. Enjoy biking around Burnham Park at the heart of the city. Photo by Nikka Corsino

While in any of these places, snack on strawberry taho, which goes for P15 to P20 a cup.

From Mines View Park, drop by Good Shepherd Convent and stock up on ube jam, alfajor, cashew peanut brittle, and strawberry jam.

PASALUBONG. Bring home Baguio’s famous ube jam, peanut brittle, strawberry jam, and many others from the Good Shepherd Convent. Photo by Owen Ballesteros

Proceed to Fort Del Pilar to visit the Philippine Military Academy, with its Relics Point and museum (admission is at P10, from 8 am to 12 noon and 1 pm to 5 pm).

Relax and listen to music (or play some yourself) at Kaffeeklatsch

RELAX. Enjoy laid-back acoustic nights with your cup of coffee at KaffeeKlatsch. Photo courtesy of KaffeeKlatsch

Located just off Legarda Road at City Camp Alley, KaffeeKlatsch features a rustic, cozy, and relaxed ambiance, as well as an open stage where guests can opt to play acoustic music. Order a cup of Roasted Karamel coffee and sit on one of the cushy chairs at the cafe’s mezzanine.

Go thrift shopping along Harrison Road

UKAY UKAY. Prepare for a night of ukay-ukay shopping along Harrison Road at the city center, across Burnham Park. Photo by Owen Ballesteros

If you’d rather see some late-night action than chill out, and if you love thrift-shopping (and still have energy left at the end of the day), head to Harrison Road (between Burnham Park and Session Road) from 9 pm onwards for cheap clothes, bags, and shoes. Stop by for some sweet corn, noodle soup, and street food – all clumped at the northern end of the strip – in between.

DAY 2 (SUNDAY) – NATURE AND EXPLORATION

Sweat it out at the Camp John Hay yellow trail

Popular among cyclists and runners, the Yellow Trail at Camp John Hay offers a scenic trail for jogging and hiking, even for beginners. If you’re not up for this, a few rounds of jogging around Camp John Hay’s sloping grounds (or Teacher’s Camp’s) also makes for a good start to your day. Alternatively, you can do some rounds of jogging at Burnham Park.

Visit the Baguio City Public Market

Fresh highland vegetables, Cordillera coffee beans, cherry tomatoes, baby potatoes, strawberries, sundot-kulangot, and many others are available at their best prices at the Baguio City public market. Head there early in the morning to take advantage of the choicest Benguet vegetables, and take your pick from Sagada, Kalinga, or Benguet coffee beans. Coffee Alamid (civet cat coffee) is also available.

Soak up the arts and fuel up at Ili Likha Artist Village

Artist and filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik’s new art-and-food space, the Ili Likha Artist Village along Assumption Road features a mélange of artwork in a fascinating, eclectic space. A space both for artists and diners, the multi-level Ili Likha was built around trees and offers art pieces – a lot of which is recycled, such as old bicycles and bottles – in every nook and cranny.

Also a food community, Ili Likha has several small restaurants serving rice meals, stews, and hot chocolate, among others.

Have a picnic at Camp John Hay

Order food for takeout in town before heading for Camp John Hay. Try the local favorite, buttered chicken, at Good Taste (with branches along Cariño St. and behind Baguio Center Mall). A local restaurant, Good Taste is known for its big servings and affordable food. You can then rent a table at the Camp John Hay grounds for P100 and while the rest of the afternoon here.

Visit the Camp John Hay historical core

Reading epitaphs may not exactly be your idea of sightseeing, but the Cemetery of Negativity offers a rather unique experience. The entrance to the cemetery reads, “No more for here is buried the world’s negativism for all time. Those who rest here have died not in vain – but for you a stern reminder. As you leave this hill remember that the rest of your life. Be More Positive.”

The Cemetery is part of the Camp John Hay Historical Core (admission is at P60 for adults and P30 for students and senior citizens). The compound also includes the Bell Ampitheater and Bell House, named after General J. Franklin Bell, who developed Camp John Hay into a military recreation area. The Bell House, which features American architecture, houses memorabilia from the American military period.

Go strawberry picking at La Trinidad Benguet

If you are taking a late night bus trip, you can squeeze in a trip to the Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad, about 20 minutes from the city center. Strawberries are in season from February to May and they go for about P300 per kilo if you pick them yourselves (or P80 to P90 a kilo for pre-selected, packed ones).

EXTEND YOUR TRIP

Hike to Mt. Cabuyao for the sunrise

TAKE IT IN. Trudge up Mt. Cabuyao before the sun rises and enjoy this view along the way. Photo by Owen Ballesteros

Known among locals as the “hidden mickey” (because of the two radar dishes which, from afar, look like cartoon character Mickey Mouse’s ears), Mt. Cabuyao in Tuba, Benguet is reachable through a 45-minute hike from the Green Valley Police Station in Baguio.

The way to the radar summit is actually a steep road paved on most parts, making this activity perfect for beginners. Do the hike in time for the sunrise for a sweeping view of the whole city.
