If you're here in the summer, be sure to swing by for Twilight on the Pier, a free music festival held once a week. Note that the pier is open daily until 10 p.m.
Look Up at the Night Sky at Griffith Observatory
The Griffith Observatory not only offers fantastic views of the stars above but also of the "stars" below. The view from this famous vantage point provides an unparalleled panorama of the Los Angeles skyline , which is particularly enjoyable to look at during sunset.
From 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, you're welcome to peer up at the night sky through one of the free public telescopes on hand, with telescope demonstrators available to help you get the most out of your visit. Alternatively, you can attend a star party , held once a month between 2 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. During these events, local amateur astronomers set up their telescopes on the observatory's front lawn, inviting attendees and their families to learn more about the sun, moon, and planets by trying out their equipment.
However you want to plan your visit, go early: The road leading to the parking lot closes at 10 p.m.
See the Stars Along Hollywood Boulevard
Betsy Malloy
No trip to Hollywood would be complete without a walk down the famous Walk of Fame. And at night, the sidewalks glow with reflected light. Spend time finding your favorite actors, directors, musicians, and even fictional characters like Mickey Mouse and Kermit the Frog. If there's one star in particular that you're looking for, head to the Walk of Fame's official website and look up their name on the Star Map .
Shop and Eat on Abbot Kinney Boulevard
TripSavvy / Christian Hundley
The lively part of Abbot Kinney is only a few blocks long, but it's always packed in the evening. In addition to boisterous bars and acclaimed restaurants including Felix and Gjelina , the quintessential California-cool boulevard is packed with people shopping at trendy stores like Rag & Bone, Vince, and Warby Parker. Come on the first Friday of every month between 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., when there are dozens of food trucks serving up everything from short-rib burgers to Desi street food.
Spend an Evening at Universal CityWalk
ferrantraite/iStock Unreleased
Located next to Universal Studios Hollywood, CityWalk is an entertainment complex home to lively restaurants and cocktail bars, shopping, and a movie theater with a seven-story IMAX. You'll also find fun attractions like indoor skydiving at iFly Hollywood , a dancing water fountain display, and mini golf . Throughout the year, concerts and other live events are held in the open-air shopping center.
Dance the Night Away on the Sunset Strip
Aerial Hollywood/Moment/Getty Images/Plus
If you are looking to party, some of the most infamous and raucous nightclubs in the country make their home along L.A.'s Sunset Strip, between Doheny Drive and Crescent Heights Boulevard. Here, you'll find everything from The Roxy to The Viper Room . Afterward, grab a snack at a favorite late-night haunt like the Pink Taco .
Spend a Haunted Night at the Queen Mary
Long Beach is home to the Queen Mary, a retired British ocean liner that sailed for Cunard for decades. If you're into spooky experiences, the decommissioned ship hosts several night tours that focus on her haunted history. Among the different options, you can explore the ship and hear stories about some of its most famous "inhabitants," attend an interactive seance in the onboard theater, or "dine with the spirits" at Sir Winston’s Restaurant and Lounge.
Visit Farmers Market and The Grove
This is perhaps the only place where you buy 24 carrots then head down the street to Tiffany’s to buy 24 carats. With more than 100 vendors, the charming covered LA Farmers Market sells fresh, locally grown produce along with flowers, jewelry, and clothes. It's a great place to go for food and entertainment, as well as souvenir shopping. Next to the market is The Grove , a high-end shopping complex with brands like diptyque and Nordstrom. You can continue your shopping excursion here, or opt to catch a movie or hang out and wait for the fountains to start dancing.
See the Skyline from the Jerome C. Daniel Overlook
The view from Mulholland Drive isn't quite as spectacular as the one from the Griffith Observatory, but it’s a bit more accessible. Nestled above the Hollywood Bowl, the Jerome C. Daniel Overlook offers views of the Hollywood Sign, the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater, downtown L.A., and Griffith Park Observatory. It closes at sunset, and it can get crowded, so make sure you go early.
Be in a Studio Audience
ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty Images
Fewer and fewer sitcoms use live audiences these days, but there are still opportunities to watch a television program being filmed . Many shows are taped throughout the day, but late-night shows may tape two episodes back-to-back, with one episode's taping running into the evening. These tapings can last up to several hours (a far cry from the hour you get to see on TV!) so be prepared.
Go Under the Spell of Old Hollywood at the Magic Castle
If you stay at the Magic Castle Hotel (or know a professional magician who can get you a pass), you can spend the evening at the exclusive Magic Castle Club next door. You'll find a variety of magic shows on display—ranging from sleight-of-hand tricks in an intimate gallery to grand illusions on the big stage—as well as a full-service dining room and a selection of bars. But be warned: To maintain a classic Hollywood vibe, all members and guests are required to dress in evening wear or business attire that is conservative, formal, and elegant.
Catch One of the City's Many Sporting Events
The Los Angeles area has no shortage of professional sports teams. With two professional teams each for hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, and football, the chances of a game happening on a night that you’re there are very good. If you're hoping to catch sight of a celebrity while you cheer on your favorite team, the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center will be your best bet.
Watch a Film at the Famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre
TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman's Chinese Theatre) is a Hollywood classic, having hosted red carpet premieres and other special events since it first opened in 1927. Today, it's part of a multiplex, but you can still catch a movie inside the original theater (or, if you prefer, a film within the world's largest IMAX auditorium).
Even if you don't see a movie here, we recommend signing up for the 30-minute VIP tour of the theater. During your visit, you'll learn all about its history, including fun facts about past Hollywood premieres. Afterward, check out the Forecourt of the Stars, which is filled with famous stars' footprints and handprints.
Explore the Historic Grauman's Egyptian Theatre
Built in 1922, the Egyptian Theatre is a historic establishment on Hollywood Boulevard. Like its more famous neighbor, the Chinese Theatre, the Egyptian hosts retrospective film festivals, movie premieres, advanced screenings, and other film events. Although it was badly damaged in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, Netflix purchased it in 2020 to give it a "rewind rehab," and will restore architectural details throughout the space, including the ceiling's sunburst organ grille. Renovations are expected to be complete in late 2022.
See a Movie at a More Intimate LA Theater
Residents of the Los Feliz neighborhood routinely line up down the street to see a movie at the Vista Theater. It's a charming throwback to grander days of movie-going, with its beautiful Egyptian-themed interior and, similar to TCL Chinese Theatre, a small courtyard with handprints and footprints out front. And here's a bonus: the theater has only one screen, so you won’t have to argue about what to watch.
Watch Classic and Cult Cinema at the New Beverly Cinema
You could go to the movies in a hundred places in L.A., but this one is different. Owned by director Quentin Tarantino, the New Beverly shows classics and oddball cult favorite films. Tarantino does most of the monthly programming, choosing films that sometimes come from his private collection. The theater is also known for refusing to use digital projection. Tarantino says, "As long as I'm alive and as long as I'm right, the New Bev will be showing double features in 35mm."
If Tarantino has a new film out, there's no better place to see it. Expect to see unique pre-show content as well as memorabilia from the film. Early during its run, the New Bev sometimes hosts post-showing discussions.
Go From the Beach to the Bar at The Kettle
Located just a couple of blocks from the pier in Manhattan Beach, The Kettle is a late-night favorite for all kinds of local characters. Welcoming hungry customers since 1973, The Kettle serves up classic diner fare, including buttermilk honey-fried chicken and biscuits, braised pot roast, angel hair carbonara, and burgers. It's open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday, and from 6 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday.
Have a Corned Beef Sandwich at Canter's Deli
LA's classic Jewish deli, founded in 1931, is open 24 hours a day, except on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Go for late-night lox and bagels, corned beef, and matzoh ball soup, or pick up freshly baked goods in the morning. The adjacent cocktail lounge, open from 10:30 a.m. to 1:40 a.m., hosts local bands and open mic nights, with the likes of The Doors, Joni Mitchell, and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers having shown up for midnight jam sessions over the years. Check the schedule to see what's on before your visit.
Eat a Hot Dog at This LA Institution
Evan Hurd Photography/Corbis Historical/Getty Images
Pink's Hot Dogs, an equal part hot dog joint and iconic L.A. institution since 1939, serves hot dogs and loaded chili-cheese fries all day, but it's also a popular spot at night. Most of its "dogs" are, not surprisingly, named after celebrities or movies, such as the Lord of the Rings Dog (BBQ sauce and onion rings) and the Brando Hot Dog (mustard, onions, chili, and shredded cheddar cheese).
There are plenty of things you can do in L.A. if you're under 21, including catching a movie at TCL Chinese Theatre, grabbing a late-night bite at Pink's Hot Dogs, and taking a ghost tour of the Queen Mary.
A lot of the city's top nightclubs, bars, and lounges can be found in Downtown and Hollywood, including The Edison, The Rooftop at The Standard, and The Mayan.
Some of the top foods to try in L.A. include tacos, French dip sandwiches, and Dodger dogs from Dodger Stadium.

Mitski Is a Mesmerizing Study in Movement, and in Pedal-Steel Pop, at L.A.’s Shrine: Concert Review

Mitski is such a cerebral record-maker that I didn’t expect to be coming away from her 2024 shows making proclamations that I might have just seen the best- choreographed tour of the year. But it’s true: Her run of three shows at L.A.’s Shine Auditorium was the kind of unexpected, advanced study in movement that couldn’t possibly be guessed just from listening to her records — the latest and best of which was last year’s pretty heady “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.”
Not that the 2024 Mitski setlist wouldn’t still come off just fine if she presented it in a more or less still-life format. This latest album is a departure for her, with music that feels big and orchestrated, a little bit classic-country, and fairly reverb-y, in what adds up to slightly spooky beauty. The songs sounds like they were meant to be played at the “Twin Peaks” roadhouse bar or, barring that un-reality, then in a really huge room, where the sound can bounce around a little and you aren’t quite close enough to crack the code of her stony facial expressions. The Shrine (where years ago she’d played the side Expo Hall, before moving up to the big room) felt like a perfect place to hear something this quietly magisterial and kind of old-school.
That rapt attention and appreciation didn’t seem at all mitigated, or Mitski-gated (sorry), by the fact that the singer sometimes delivered the oldies a little bit differently than they might have been expecting. That is to say, some of the material longtime fans are most familiar with was rearranged to skew closer to the style, or styles, of “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.” Its genre could be described as modern Americana meets the ghost signal of a clear-channel megawatt station from the 1950s or ’60s. When I first heard the album, my thought was that I was so happy she’d ditched the producer of her previous album, 2022’s synth-poppy “Laurel Hell,” for some new genius; the punchline, of course, is that it’s the same guy, Patrick Hyland, as it almost always is. The two of them seem inhospitable to stasis, so they’ll probably switch it up again for the next album. But while they’re touring behind this one — with Hyland as her musical director as well as guitarist, naturally — they’re letting things cohere a little while they’re in this rich vein, while not being completely resisting having some of the “hits” be as indie or synthy as they always were in her catalog. It’s an ideal balance all around.
The extent to which they’re having fun with some of the rearrangements is best found in Mitski’s new take on “I Don’t Smoke,” a 10-year-old chestnut. If you look at some setlists, fans have marked it down as “I Don’t Smoke (Folk Version).” Well, no. It’s more like “I Don’t Smoke (Hoedown Version)” — far more determinedly country than anything on her latest album (or on Beyonce’s). That’s a big outlier in the set, but a welcome one. Plenty of other moments rely on Mitski’s Patsy Cline inclinations to a far subtler degree, although the amount of pedal steel, fiddle and accordion played by Nashville alt-country veteran Fats Kaplan, the ace in her seven-piece band, is telltale about where this round of influences lies. And if you don’t like the countrypolitan touches? No problem — there’s still a lot of familiarity in this set for any returning fans, whether she’s getting synthy early on with “Working for the Knife” or reviving her more twee rocker mode to close out the encore with “Washing Machine Heart.”
For the rest of the night, once the curtain is gone, the singer stays on a round, slightly elevated platform at center stage, where her props consist of… two wooden chairs, fitfully employed when she needs something to lie down and lean against, or stand atop like she might be jumping off a building. The second number, “Buffalo Replaced,” had her going through the robotic motions of alternately hiding her eyes with both hands and putting them out as a stop signal, something she maintained even during a long, awkward pause between songs and into the beginning of the next one, “Working for the Knife.” Suddenly, in that one, she dropped the peekaboo routine and was all about graceful fluidity, or the occasional go-go-girl pose. At one point she turned her back to the audience and let her hands, wrists and arms form wavelike motions, kind of like the dancer in Bob Fosse’s “The Aloof” number in “Sweet Charity.”
Much later, and much less gracefully, Mitski was down on all fours for, appropriately, the crowd favorite “I Bet on Losing Dogs.” When a performance can make you think of David Byrne, Roy Orbison, Bob Fosse and dog-man Iggy Pop, it’s obviously doing something right.
And this is before getting to the two most interestingly staged moments in the show. In her Billboard Hot 100 hit “My Love Mine All Mine” and on through to “Last Words of a Shooting Star,” shards of something — faux plexiglass? — descended on strings from the top of the stage on down to her platform, then dangled there for a while before finally ascending, one by one, as her touch commanded them to arise. Were we to take these jagged edges as a form of danger that could be commandeered only by the awesome psychic powers of Mitski… or beauty in brokenness… or just nifty-looking stagecraft in a show that otherwise dispenses with it? Probably 6,000 different 15-to-25-agers at the Shrine held 6,000 different interpretations, and the scattered old folks, too, but we were all taken with it.
But “Heaven” offered the sweetest moment, when Mitski danced, arm in arm (sort of), with the white beam of an overhead followspot. That’s probably not as easily choreographed as it looks. (What was it they said about Ginger Rogers, that she did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in heels? Mitski did everything the spotlight did, but backwards and comprised of physical matter.)
And she did. No, it assuredly wasn’t a concert designed to wrap up her adoring hordes in warm fuzzies. But as a highly theatrical show that still maintained the sense of a real, cool, warm person animating all that minimalist artifice, it ironically felt kind of… could this be the right word?… hospitable.

Don Omar Cements His Legacy with ‘Back to Reggaeton’ Show in L.A.
- By Tomás Mier
No one takes the crown from the king. On Wednesday night, Don Omar delivered a high-energy, career-spanning celebration as part of his Back to Reggaeton tour stop in Los Angeles. During a nearly two-hour, 40-song show at the Kia Forum, Don Omar delivered a set filled with old-school perreo while also paying tribute to the artists that paved the way for him.
Don Omar, draped in a leather coat with red fur, hit the stage sitting atop a massive silver skull throne. He was surrounded by a dozen dancers and visuals that presented him as a pirate king. He opened the concert with some of his early 2000s classics, bringing fans to their feet with “Dale Don Dale,” his Héctor El Father collab “Ronca,” and a snippet of his Daddy Yankee collaboration “Sácala.”
The acknowledgments continued in the middle of the show, when he celebrated some of the biggest names in reggaeton, including the ones who played a role shaping the genre with him. He first performed a mashup of his Héctor y Tito collaborations “Baila Morena” and “Amor de Colegio,” sharing how the duo changed his life. “If it weren’t for those men who gave me the chance, I probably wouldn’t have the life I have now,” he said.
He shouted out Luny Tunes, using their track “Reggaetón Latino” to call for unity among Latinos “in a country like this that tries to divide us.” Later, he transported fans back to the MySpace days by performing his Wisín y Yandel collaborations. He ended his tribute segment by celebrating his longtime rival Daddy Yankee.

With colorful lights and confetti raining over the crowd, Don Omar ended his show with “Taboo” and, of course, his classic “ Danza Kuduro ,” featuring Lucenzo.

Bruce Springsteen’s rock ’n’ roll church is back in session with the E Street Band
- Show more sharing options

How this guy got his dog into a sold-out rock concert I can’t say.
But there he was, not long before the end of Bruce Springsteen’s gig here Monday night, hoisting a small bulldog onto an elevated walkway running across Pechanga Arena.
Springsteen , who’d come out onto the walkway to sing his indelible “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” clocked the pup as he passed by, then knelt down, entirely unfazed, to give it a little pat: just another supplicant looking for a blessing from the Boss.
With his stalwart E Street Band behind him, Springsteen has long conducted his marathon live show as a kind of secular religious revival in which he preaches a gospel of transcendence through abandon.
Weezer’s Blue Album at 30: The inside story of the debut that launched L.A.’s nerdiest band
Thirty years after the release of their debut LP, the members of Weezer reveal how the Blue Album came to be.
March 25, 2024
“We are here to wake you, to shake you, to take you to higher ground,” he told the crowd in San Diego, which roared back in approval. “I plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting and your sexual organs stimulated.”
Yet last year, this rock ’n’ roll faith leader stepped away from his pulpit when a bout with peptic ulcer disease forced him off the road amid fears that he’d lost his ability to sing. In January, another blow arrived when his mother, Adele — a crucial booster early in his career and a frequent presence at his concerts well into old age — died at age 98 .
Monday’s show, which had been rescheduled from December, was Springsteen’s third since he resumed his world tour last week after a six-month break. (He’ll play the Kia Forum in Inglewood on April 4 and 7.)
“It’s great to be back in San Diego,” he said at one point. “I mean, where the f— was I?”
Indeed, the Boss’ recent troubles seemed far from his mind throughout a rousing if somewhat standard-issue three-hour performance that delivered just what his fans have come to expect: fist-pumping songs about hope and redemption, affectionate covers of old rock and soul standards, a bit of squishy philosophizing regarding the fragility of life and just enough bum-waggling (in this case during a rendition of the Commodores’ “Nightshift”) to convince you that Springsteen is still enjoying pop stardom at age 74.
Then again, nobody goes to church to be surprised — the point of the thing, as Springsteen has always understood, is to be reaffirmed.
Here his voice was in strong shape in both the roaring uptempo numbers and the stately ballads: a keening bellow in “No Surrender” that he could downshift to summon a sense of gravelly desperation in “My City of Ruins.” He ripped shards of noise from his guitar in “Prove It All Night” and got his harmonica wheezing in “The Promised Land.” “Death to My Hometown” carried a faint whiff of Revolutionary War cosplay as several E Streeters temporarily became a miniature fife and drum corps. But it was fun to see Jake Clemons put his saxophone down to smack a bass drum hard enough that you could hear it without apparent amplification.
Other pleasures from the dozen and a half players crammed onto the stage at Pechanga: the unchanging sight of drummer Max Weinberg’s perfect posture, Nils Lofgren’s dive-bombing guitar solo in “Because the Night,” the gorgeous combination of Stevie Van Zandt’s slick leather trousers and extra-pointy boots.
After 45 minutes or so, Springsteen introduced the members by name, then asked, “Are we missing anybody?” The answer was yes: As at his previous two gigs, the singer’s wife, Patti Scialfa, wasn’t in the band Monday, though he didn’t say why.
“Everybody’s missing somebody in this crowd,” he added with a touch of poetry.
The show was long — maybe too long — on tunes from Springsteen’s most recent handful of albums. (“Mary’s Place”? C’mon.) But once the hits started coming toward the end of the night, they came in a deluge: a luscious and muscular “Thunder Road”; “Born to Run,” delirious as always under the blazing house lights; an almost comically speedy “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)” that he brought to an impressive standstill so the crowd could take the line about that “pretty little place in Southern California, down San Diego way.”
As a mover, Springsteen was maybe a little creakier than in the other shows I’ve caught over the last decade, at least until he came across that dog in his path during “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” Blessing bestowed, he stood with an ease that looked like purpose.

"Few artists in the course of history have taken creative risks, successfully transformed their music and influenced pop culture on the level that Beyoncé has," an iHeartRadio news release stated. "Throughout the years, the global cultural icon has created music that has topped the charts across multiple formats , while also architecting groundbreaking tours, including last year’s RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR — the highest-grossing tour in history for both an R&B artist and a Black female artist."
In her latest chapter, the "Texas Hold 'Em" singer is making waves in the country music genre. She said she was honored to make groundbreaking achievements with her new music but she hopes that "years from now, the mention of an artist’s race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant."
