Biden takes inaugural flight in long-delayed new 'Marine One' helicopter

CHICAGO (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday took his first flight aboard the modern VH-92A helicopter that serves as Marine One after years of delays to the program to replace the aging aircraft that carry the president and vice president.

Biden boarded the Sikorsky-made helicopter after arriving on Air Force One in Chicago where he is speak Monday evening at the Democratic National Convention. The maiden presidential voyage carried him from O’Hare International Airport to the parking lot of Chicago's Soldier Field, often used as a landing zone for presidential travel.

It marked a crucial milestone in a two-decade-long process to replace the Vietnam-era helicopters that have been in use carrying presidents, in some cases, since the 1970s.

An initial effort to purchase new helicopters was kicked off by the Bush administration in an effort to improve communications and mission capabilities in the post-September 11, 2001 environment, but it was scrapped by President Barack Obama after rampant cost overruns.

The new program was started by the Obama administration, and the helicopter, branded the “Patriot” by its manufacturer, made its public debut during the Trump administration. But issues with the secure communications system on board — required so that the president can carry out classified conversations and make military decisions in an emergency — as well as a tendency to scorch the White House South Lawn led to years of delays to the program.

The Marine Corps reported last year that the communications issues had been resolved, but it was not clear whether modifications to the exhaust system have eliminated the threat to the White House grass.

Marine Helicopter Squadron One, which operates the aircraft, has been using the VH-92 helicopters for several years in regular service, including test flights around Washington, D.C. and to carry White House staff and security personnel. The final VH-92A helicopter was delivered earlier this month, giving the USMC 21 operational aircraft and two for testing. The total program cost for the 23 aircraft was about $5 billion.

The new helicopters are based on the commercially-available Sikorsky S-92 and are larger and have longer range than the older VH-3D and VH-60N models.

It takes most people 3 days to unwind on vacation. Meet the Slowcation.

  • Slow travel is gaining popularity as more Americans seek to destress on vacations.
  • Travelers are booking longer trips and spending more time in each destination.
  • Experts recommend train travel and rest days to fully immerse in local cultures.

Insider Today

My trip to Europe in October 2022 was doomed from the start.

My itinerary? Travel by train to six cities in four countries in just two weeks.

Don't get me wrong — I had a good time on the whirlwind trip . It was fascinating to explore new cities and countries so different from mine. But ultimately, the trip wasn't fulfilling.

Two weeks just isn't enough time to see more than a small fraction of what Berlin , Vienna , Rome, Venice, Milan , and Zurich offer, as I spent one to three nights in each city.

Looking back on it, I feel like I viewed them more through my camera than my own eyes. From the Colosseum in Rome to the canals in Venice , I only hit the tourist hot spots without truly discovering what life was really like in each place.

I should have been more like Claire Sturzaker .

When the  full-time solo traveler  books a trip, she said it's usually at least a month long. She schedules time to rest and explore lesser-known destinations that are just a day trip away.

"It helps me really get to know the place without rushing around," she told Business Insider. "I'd rather spend a month getting to know a place than say, 'All right, I've been here for a day. Let's go."

And she's not the only one.

According to the Summer 2024 Travel Trends Report: The Rise of the 'Slowcation' by Scott Dunn, founder of the luxury travel provider Scott Dunn, 60% of 2,000 US participants are planning vacations to have slow travel. The report described it as a "mindset" that emphasizes "exploring somewhere on a deeper level" and "making space mentally and physically for things to happen spontaneously."

A representative of the luxury travel agency Goway told BI that their clients have been booking an average of three additional days for trips than they did before the pandemic, and more travelers now book 11-day vacations compared to any other length of time.

While the "slowcation" trend is on the rise, the idea of slow travel — spending more time truly getting to know a destination rather than rushing to hit the tourist hot spots — is nothing new.

Slow travel is about "exploring all of what one country has to offer, whether…going from different major cities to different landscapes, checking out coastal areas, or going into the mountains and hiking depending on your traveler preference," Goway destination specialist Melissa Moses told BI . "It's seeing the difference between each city and one country and the landscapes of one country to get a better idea of that culture as a whole."

It doesn't just benefit the vacationer — sustainability experts have been promoting the slow approach to travel for years.

Related stories

"Fewer but longer trips mean fewer air miles, more money in local hands, and you'll have a more relaxing trip, too," Justin Francis, cofounder and CEO of Responsible Travel, previously told BI.

Slow travel is a way to destress

Slowcations are on the rise due to more Americans prioritizing destressing on vacation, according to Dunn's report, which says that the ideal trip length is eight days, and among the travelers they surveyed, it took an average worker three days to switch out of work mode once on vacation.

Career coach Alice Stapleton agrees.

"With smartphones, social media, and easy access to WiFi, it's become harder and harder to switch off completely," she told BI in an email. "Work (and life) is incredibly consuming these days, and it can take a while for the nervous system to adjust to a slower pace."

Still, not every traveler can take a monthlong trip like Sturzaker. That's OK since Stapleton recommends taking 7-10 days to recharge for someone with a typical 40-hour week.

Slow travel isn't just about trip length

Therapist Mark Loewen also agrees with Dunn's report, adding that restoring yourself on vacation isn't just about trip length.

"What makes a bigger difference than the time is how you spend that time," Loewen told BI. "One of the big reasons…vacations are good for us is because it engages another part of our brain by paying attention to something different. And just like on a computer, it helps that area that is constantly working to cool down."

He said the second big reason is that learning and discovering new things excites our brains, creating dopamine that helps us recover from stress.

"But if we are still connected to other stressors like news, we can't fully step into whatever we're doing," he added. "So the faster we can disconnect, the faster we can get that recovery."

Aside from completely disconnecting from work, Loewen suggests spending less time on your phone while slow traveling.

"I know it can be hard. I went standup paddling the other day, and I didn't have my waterproof case for my phone. I went for an hour and didn't even take any pictures, and I was like, 'Oh, man, yeah, I can do that.'"

Loewen doesn't recommend seeing a new city every day while traveling — as I did in Europe — because the trip may feel more like checking off items on a to-do list than enjoying the moment.

"Slow down and take the time, because otherwise, you're trying to achieve again — thinking, 'now we have to get all this done,'" Loewen said. "But it's OK if we don't get it all done. If you're exploring, find days where you can just rest and relax as well. "

When planning slowcation itineraries, Moses recommends scheduling in rest days.

"I personally always suggest at least three nights in each city where one of those days is packed with activities, and then the next day is a rest day," she said.

Biking and trains are great for slow travel

Prioritizing how you travel while on vacation can give you peak slow travel benefits, such as biking or train travel.

For example, in Central Vietnam, the tour company Slow Travel Hue provides bike excursions that are a half-day long rather than just an hour or two.

"It's really about the mindset that you really take time to savor the experience," Do Phuong , tour company founder, told BI. "Search for authentic experiences. Schedule your itinerary in a very loose way. Be really immersed into the experience and try to connect with local culture, local people, and the surrounding nature," he advises.

According to Phuong, the tour company has been around since 2014, but it wasn't until 2020 that they rebranded to serve slow travelers as the trend began to build.

Loewen said train trips are also a great way to travel slowly because they make the journey feel like a destination. Scott Dunn's global product director, Simon Lynch, agrees.

"Leisurely train travel is one of the best ways to experience slow travel, allowing you to sit back and savor every moment," he told BI in an email. "A new wave of luxury rail itineraries has driven a thirst for cultural immersion, exploring the less-visited backroads of popular destinations."

Lynch added that Scott Dunn has had three times as many train trip bookings between January and April 2024 compared to the same timeframe in 2023. One of their most popular train bookings for slow travelers is the Eastern & Oriental Express sleeper that runs between Singapore and Malaysia.

Moses told BI that she recommends traveling by train to roughly 90% of destinations around Europe because it is more seamless than flying.

"The train stations are located in the city centers. It's oftentimes within a five-minute walk from your hotel. So depending on your luggage, you can always just walk to the train station. You only need to be there 20-30 minutes before your train departs and just hop on," she said. "Whereas when taking a flight, what could be a two-hour destination trip turns into a four or five-hour one."

Moses recommends slow travel by train in Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, citing the Glacier Express . It's "a stunning experience through the Alps," Moses added. "It has a clear rooftop, and you can have a prearranged three-course lunch or dinner on the train."

Despite the obvious benefits of lower stress, deeper immersion in the cities you visit, and sustainability rewards, Lynch says slow trips may also be more memorable.

"Taking a slower and gentler approach to the way that you travel — and making the journey part of your trip — will not only encourage you to relax and unwind quicker but inevitably lead to discovery along the way," Lynch said. "This, in turn, can help you to make meaningful memories, too."

The voyage of the Altar Stone: A Stonehenge mystery solved (maybe)

Researchers revealed that the long-mysterious Altar Stone at the heart of the world’s most famous prehistoric monument came from faraway Scotland.

travel long traducir

LONDON — The world’s most famous prehistoric monument continues to surprise and amaze. Researchers on Wednesday revealed that the long-mysterious “Altar Stone” at the heart of Stonehenge came from faraway Scotland, raising tantalizing new questions about how — and why — a six-ton slab of sandstone made its way from north to south 5,000 years ago.

Aliens? Not likely, unless the government knows something we don’t. Could it have been deposited nearby by ice - age glaciers that covered Britain during the woolly mammoth Pleistocene? Probably not. The ice sheets in Scotland were moving north, not south, and so deposited their moraines in the opposite direction.

So we are left with two theories: that the Altar Stone was dragged 500 miles or more overland by our Neolithic forebears, before the invention of the wheel, across the high hills and through the dense forests of prehistoric Britain; or, as these scientists speculate, that the stone was ferried via sea by Stone Age mariners, a routing that “demonstrates a high level of societal organization with intra-Britain transport during the Neolithic period.”

Meaning? That Neolithic peoples were capable of delivering a Stone Age prehistoric FedEx package weighing 13,227 pounds from as far north as the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland to the Salisbury Plain southwest of present-day London, with the understanding that six tons is approximately the weight of a full-grown male African elephant.

Such a delivery might have taken a decade or more — but “just in time” is relative.

At this point, the scientists say your guess is about as good as theirs, which is why Stonehenge remains “a wonder of the world.”

The new research, led by scientists at Curtin University in Australia, is jaw-dropping — upending a century of geological inquiry to conclude that the Altar Stone, long believed to originate from Wales, actually hails from Scotland, and would have had to make a trip of 450 to 600 miles.

The stone must have meant a lot to the people back then. There is other evidence of other stones being moved from stone circle to stone circle.

“But this is a very, very long way,” said Heather Sebire, senior curator at Stonehenge for the group English Heritage. She called the new findings “amazing.”

What was Stonehenge — a burial site, a meeting place, an astronomical clock or a “computer”?

The Altar Stone has always been a spooky outlier, unique in its composition and its placement, and one of the most analyzed pieces of stone ever, a kind of moon rock for the archaeologist set.

You can visit it today. It lies at the center, the heart, of the stone circle but was found recumbent, lying flat, on the horizontal. When did it arrive? Maybe 2500 B.C. Could it have come to Stonehenge later? Sure, but the builders might have had to squeeze it into place.

Nobody knows whether the Altar Stone served as an altar, just as the nearby “ Slaughter Stone ” probably had nothing to do with sacrifice — human or otherwise. These were just the romantic (lurid) names that the early pearl-clutching antiquarians gave the rocks, imagining druids doing their nasty business to appease some unholy deities.

A 25-year-old PhD student named Anthony Clarke, who is originally from Wales and visited Stonehenge as a child, led the search for the provenance of the Altar Stone.

Clarke and colleagues examined two polished samples of the stone, each thinner than a strand of hair — and wow.

Robert Ixer, an archaeologist at University College London, an authority on the geology of Stonehenge and a co-author of the paper that appears in the journal Nature, said the team in Australia had just two samples of the Altar Stone to work with.

“But that was enough,” he told The Washington Post.

He called the new provenance of the Altar Stone “astonishing.” Ixer spent much of his career assuming the Altar Stone was from Wales, still a far distance, but not nearly as far away as Scotland.

So precious is the Neolithic monument, a World Heritage site, that it is no longer possible to take a hammer and chisel, as the Victorians and their predecessors did, and knock off a chunk to examine.

Ixer explained that the two samples in the research paper included one collected in the 1840s with a hammer, and a second from the 1920s, which was excavated at the site as a bit of detritus. And it is those two slivers that led researchers to a conclusion about the geographic provenance of the Altar Stone.

“They are both fragments of the Altar Stone with the exact same characteristics,” Ixer said.

The analysis of the Altar Stone was also overseen by Chris Kirkland at the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group within Curtin’s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The cutting-edge laboratory usually spends its time helping to look for iron ore and gold deposits.

In this case, the group used lasers to light and mass spectrometers to explore the individual grains in the Altar Stone sliver, paying most attention to the minerals apatite, rutile and zircon, which decays at a known rate and so becomes a kind of “geologic clock” for dating material.

They found the specific grains in the Altar Stone contained minerals that were as old as 2 billion years and others 450 million years old, which produced a kind of chemical fingerprint.

The geologists from Curtin say with 95 percent certainty that the Altar Stone is Old Red Sandstone from the Orcadian Basin in northeast Scotland, an area that stretches from the Orkney Islands to Inverness.

Two other stones make up most of the Stonehenge assemblage. The big sarsen stones, which form the upright posts and lintels in the postcards, the dramatic images of the monument, came from nearby quarries, not many miles away.

The others are called “bluestones,” which form the outer circle, and those stones came from quarries in Wales.

How all the sarsen and bluestones were moved remains a hotly debated topic — were they wrapped in willow baskets and rolled? Or pushed along on sleds, or rolled on logs, or just dragged by humans with rope and leather, maybe helped by oxen?

As for the Altar Stone, these researchers like a maritime route. They point out that Neolithic people introduced the common vole from continental Europe to Orkney. There is also evidence of the long-distance marine transport of cattle and quarried stone tools and pottery. Goods and animals crossed the English Channel way back then.

Researchers have found evidence of Neolithic dugout canoes — but mostly in rivers, not seaside. Seagoing rafts, perhaps boats with hulls lined with animal skins? That is a good guess, but there is little physical evidence on the shorelines because these kinds of materials decay quickly.

The geologists here say that more geologists will now work hard to pinpoint the exact place in Scotland where the Altar Stone came from — and they confess that another generation of archaeologists will puzzle to figure out how and why the stone was moved, perhaps never to know.

“As these things may be lost to history,” as Clarke said. Or maybe not.

What is Long Term Travel?

Long term travel refers to an extended period of time spent away from one’s usual place of residence for the purpose of exploration, relaxation, adventure, or any other personal or professional goal.

While there is no strict definition for how long “long-term” travel should be, it typically involves travel durations that extend beyond the typical vacation or short-term trip. This means, it can range from a few weeks to several months or even years.

Long term travel is unique in that it allows you to truly immerse yourself in new cultures and environments without the deadline to return home looming. This allows you to get to know and understand different places and people deeper than you might with just a week or two away.

That being said, long-term travel requires careful planning and consideration of factors such as finances, accommodations, visas, and health insurance. While it can be a transformative experience, providing opportunities for personal growth, cultural immersion, and building lasting memories, it’s also not easy.

It comes with challenges like homesickness, logistical issues, and financial constraints. You will have to become savvy to address and manage all the challenges encountered throughout your epic journey.

Common Types of Long Term Travel

There are many ways to travel for a long period of time. From gap years to being a digital nomad and beyond, there’s no limitation to the age or lifestyle you need to lead when you give long term travel a try!

1. Gap Year

One of the most commonly known types of long-term travel is the famous Gap Year. A Gap Year is when students or young adults take a year between high school and college or after graduation to travel for an extended period.

During this time, they may explore new countries, volunteer, work abroad, or engage in other personal growth experiences. It’s a great way for young adults to establish their independence and get to know a bit more about the world and what they want out of life.

2. Sabbatical

A less common type of long term travel – at least in the United States – is the sabbatical. A sabbatical is when a working professional takes an extended leave of absence from their job to travel and recharge.

A sabbatical can last from a few months to a year or more, depending on the individual’s goals and circumstances. Personally, I enjoyed taking a sabbatical because I had the finances to travel and it recharged me from the day-to-day grind of work.

Some places around the world even build sabbaticals into their work culture. In some cases, corporations even buy into the idea, and you take a break from work but hold on to your job. This is ideal because you know there is a job and income when you’re done traveling!

3. Digital Nomadism

A more recent trend has been the rise of digital nomadism. Digital nomads are people who work remotely while traveling continuously or for extended periods. They leverage technology, like Wi-Fi, co-working spaces, and coffee shops to manage their careers while exploring different locations around the world.

I have given this a try and it’s a great option for those who have flexibility in their work. It’s particularly common with freelancers and consultants who are able to be location independent for their jobs.

4. Retirement Travel

How many times have you heard “I’ll travel more when I retire.”? I know I’ve heard it a lot. Retirement travel refers to retirees who embark on long term adventures after their working years have ended.

This could be by RV, cruise ship, road trips, etc. but they typically explore destinations they’ve always dreamed of visiting but never had the time and money to do so. One of the best parts of traveling when retired is that you can enjoy a leisurely pace of travel with no guilt!

5. World Travelers

Some individuals or couples make long term travel a lifestyle. This is when you continuously move from one destination to another. Sometimes this comes with the goal to visit as many countries or to see as much of the world as possible.

For many, world travel is accompanied with small jobs found along the way. This often looks like working at hostels, farming, teaching a language, or even just waitressing or ice cream shops for a small income along the journey. It helps travelers sustain the cost of living on the road without a full-time job.

My Long Term Travel Experiences

As a travel addict, which must be obvious in this travel blog, you may not know that I’ve spent years on years without a home base, traveling around the world and around the United States.

Two specific instances that made the most impact on my life are when I took a year+ off of work to travel around the world (this is what inspired the start of the Cure for Curiosity !) and when I hit the road for a year and a half with my remote job…before remote work was popularized during Covid!

Let me tell you a little about both of these instances and then we can dive into how you can handle the most common challenges and questions about long term travel!

Travel around the World Sabbatical from Work (2015 – 2016)

I did the unthinkable. I quit a perfectly good corporate 8am – 5pm corporate marketing job to travel around the world. During the 13 months I was on the road, I traveled on a budget to Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania.

It was a wild ride living in hostels and hotels taking every mode of transportation under the sun from planes and trains to motorbikes, boats, and even camels. Honestly, it was a dream come true, but it was not without its challenges.

Here are some helpful pieces based on that time in my life:

Digital Nomad while Working Full Time (2017 – 2018)

My next long term travel adventure looked a bit different. I decided to give up my apartment, while working full time, to road trip across the United States and Canada for a year and a half.

This meant finding stable internet and quiet places to work were top of mind, while budget travel was not as important. It enabled me the freedom and flexibility to see more of my own country and travel slower.

FAQs about Long Term Travel

Traveling for a year or even just a month can be complicated. Here are some frequently asked questions about the ins and outs of traveling for a long period of time.

How much money do I need for long term travel?

Long term travel budgets vary widely. Your expenses will depend on factors like your destinations, travel style, and personal preferences. You’ll also have to factor in the cost of any expenses back home, like mortgage/rent, car insurance/payments, etc.

To determine your budget, make a list of expected expenses, including accommodation, food, transportation, activities, visas, insurance, and a cushion for unexpected costs. Research destination specific costs and create a financial plan accordingly. Alternatively, you can also just wing it and travel until your budget runs out.

What about health insurance and medical care while traveling long term?

Health insurance is crucial when traveling long term. Research travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive coverage, including emergency medical expenses, evacuation, and trip interruption coverage.

Ensure that the policy covers the countries you plan to visit. Additionally, carry copies of important medical documents and prescriptions for any necessary medications. I personally travel with World Nomads , although I never needed to make a claim.

Do I need a passport and visas for long term travel?

If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll definitely need a passport. However, your visa requirements depend entirely on your nationality and the countries you plan to visit. You’ll need to research visa regulations for each destination and apply well in advance if required. An easy way to do it is using a service like iVisa .

Make sure to always keep track of visa expiration dates and renewals to avoid legal issues while traveling. One that many don’t think about is the Schengen territory in Europe … there’s a limit there too! I personally used 90 out of 90 days on my Schengen stay and then had to hop over to Morocco to avoid legal concerns.

How can I manage my finances while traveling long term?

Managing finances on the road requires careful planning. Depending how long you’re traveling for, you may want to open a bank account with low foreign ATM fees or a credit card with no international transaction fee to minimize unnecessary fees.

Also, make sure to notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid card issues and carry multiple forms of payment (cash, credit cards, debit cards) to avoid being stranded without money. This is especially useful in case of fraud or theft! You can also use budgeting apps, like Empower , or a spreadsheet to track your travel expenses.

What should I pack for long term travel?

Packing efficiently is essential, and you’ll thank yourself every time you have to move to a new city or accommodation. Make sure to pack versatile clothing suitable for various climates, quick-drying and lightweight materials, and don’t forget essential documents like passports, visas, and travel insurance.

Remember to also pack appropriate power adapters, toiletries, and any specialized gear needed for your planned activities. My long term packing list includes everything I took with me on the road and is a super helpful place to start.

Additionally, I’m an avid carry-on user. In fact, I hate checking luggage. Between the chance of lost luggage, theft, or simply delays, I’m carrying it on! As such, I have managed to travel for 13+ months out of 1 carry-on backpack. I highly recommend you give it a shot!

How can I stay safe while traveling long term?

Safety should be a top priority at home and on the road. It never hurts to check advisories for your destinations as well as identifying and avoiding risky areas. I find asking your accommodation for areas to avoid is super helpful as they know the area best!

Additionally, always stay aware of your surroundings. Secure your belongings. Use reputable transportation services. Let someone know your whereabouts. Carry photocopies of important documents and consider investing in a money belt or hidden pouch.

There’s endless tips for staying safe while traveling – check out my 35 top travel safety tips .

How do I find places to stay for long term travel?

Accommodation options vary widely. Couchsurfing , hostels , and guesthouses are budget-friendly choices, while vacation rentals and long-term apartment rentals, like on VRBO , offer more privacy. If you want to think a bit outside the box, you can also consider housesitting through sites, like Trusted Housesitters .

I personally always check Booking.com for accommodations so that I can read reviews to find hotels, hostels, or even rental properties that fit my budget and preferences.

What should I do about my job or career during long term travel?

If you plan to work while traveling, discuss options with your employer, such as remote work or sabbaticals. If you freelance, ensure you have a reliable internet connection and backup plans. You can also explore job opportunities abroad if you’re open to working while traveling.

While working and traveling is not always the easiest route (versus saving up and taking time off to travel), it can allow you to stay on the road longer. This makes it common to find long term travelers working at hostels or a local farm for a few weeks at a time.

How can I stay connected with family and friends during long term travel?

Staying in touch is essential. Fortunately, today it is so much easier than it was just a few years ago. You can purchase international SIM cards or phone plans which include international cell service.

Alternatively, you can depend on messaging apps with internet access. I personally love WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, but I have also tried Telegram and Viber.

Another way that I kept my family informed of where I was and how to find me was a shared Google Doc that kept all of my daily travel confirmations and reservations. I updated it as I went and then my family could pull it up anytime to find out exactly where I was. Similarly, if you have cell reception, you can share your location! Did I mention technology has made it easier?!

What if I get homesick or face challenges on the road?

Homesickness and challenges are natural during long term travel. In fact, it’s actually accounted for in one of the stages of Culture Shock ! To help you keep your feelings in check, make sure to maintain a support system through social media, travel forums, or local expat groups or learn to make friends on the road .

Also, practice self-care, take breaks when needed, and remember that overcoming challenges is part of the adventure. Not every day will be perfect, but it will be worth it. Besides, you’ll learn new ways to think on your feet and address challenges as they arise. It’s a growth opportunity for sure!

What is the best way to plan an itinerary for long term travel?

One of the biggest questions… where to go during long term travel. There are so many amazing places in the world, where do you even start? It really all comes down to – where do you want to go?

Planning an itinerary should involve a balance between structured plans and spontaneous exploration. You can use online resources, guidebooks, and travel forums to research destinations, create a rough itinerary, and leave room for flexibility.

I personally had a starting destination (Norway) and then a few key dates I was meeting people in various places, like Poland and New Zealand. This gave me some structure to follow but loads of flexibility on where to go in-between.

One of the best ways to plan your itinerary is to ask other travelers what their favorite places are and to then ask locals for recommendations once you arrive.

How can I handle language barriers while traveling?

Going someplace you don’t speak the language can be scary. How will you communicate? Fortunately, there are many ways to communicate – believe it or not!

One best practice is to learn a few basic phrases in the local language. It will be immensely helpful and appreciated by locals. You can also use translation apps for deeper communication.

Also, if you’re reading this in English, you’re already in luck. English is often widely spoken in tourist areas. That being said, don’t rely on that alone. Knowing a bit of the local language can enhance your travel experience and build rapport with the locals. You’ll be able to get around with ease!

When in doubt, charades and emojis can be your best friends. Lost in China trying to get to the Panda Research Center ? No worries. I literally pulled out my phone and used 3 emojis: Bus, arrow, panda. And the first person I approached was able to point me in the right direction. Use your creativity!

How can I stay organized during long term travel?

In some ways, organization on the road is simple. You have your luggage, which doesn’t change much, and your documents, which can be stored online.

The best option is to create digital backups of important documents, keep travel itineraries and reservations in one place, and use travel apps to track expenses and stay on top of travel details. With everything being online, you can regularly review your plans and update them as needed.

What are the long term effects of travel on my life and career?

One of the biggest things that held me back from taking the plunge into quitting my job to travel was the fear of returning and finding another job. As it so happened, it was not something I should have been so worried about.

Long term travel leads to personal growth, increased adaptability, and a broader perspective on life and career goals. Consider how the experiences and skills gained during your journey align with your future plans and aspirations, and use them to your advantage in your career or personal life.

In all of the interviews after my around the world travel for 13 months I was asked about my trip in a positive light. “What did you learn from it?” types of questions. Trust me… it will pique their interest!

Follow on facebook:, tractive offering x-treme pro ‘long-travel’ suspension for tenere 700, a top-of-the-line suspension kit for those that want next-level off-road performance..

travel long traducir

Since its release in 2019 in Europe and the arrival in the US in 2021, there’s no question the Yamaha Tenere 700 has become one of the most popular and sought out adventure bikes on the market. With its rally-inspired design, it hits a sweet spot in power, performance, simplicity, and price that’s hard to beat. But despite all the high points, a top drawback often reported by owners is its suspension.

While the stock KYB suspension is decently capable out of the box for average trails, it has its limits in technical off-road terrain, especially in the hands of a skilled rider. Soft springs and limited travel of 8.3 inches (210mm) in front and 7.9 inches (200mm) in the rear mean you’re likely to start bottoming out on the larger bumps at faster speeds, which gets worse when loaded up for travel. The stock damping adjusters can take you only so far in tuning out negative characteristics and the limited ground clearance leads to early skid plate scraping in rough terrain.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

Compared to other off road-focused adventure bikes in the class like the KTM 890 Adventure R, Tuareg 660 and Tiger 900 Rally Pro, it’s down about an inch on the suspension travel specs. Even a casual off-roader like the V-Strom 800DE offers more.

Few Adventure Bikes seem more deserving of a suspension upgrade than the T7 and we’ve all seen the upper end of the model’s potential on full display in the talented hands of Pol Tarres, who uses TracTive suspension components on his custom-built bikes .

For those owners who want to unleash their own potential on the trail, TracTive Suspension has the killer T7 mod in the form of the X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel kit . The kit not only increases suspension travel and ground clearance by roughly an inch front and rear, but also upgrades the quality of the suspension with race-level componentry for improved stability, control and confidence on the trail.

Front Suspension Upgrade

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

Ever felt your T7 fork clunk on a big rock or deep rut? That’s exactly what the TracTive front suspension upgrade is designed to fix. The X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel front cartridge kit is a drop-in upgrade to the existing 43mm Tenere 700 fork that doesn’t require any special mods to install. Not only does it increase suspension travel on the fork to 9.3 inches, it also offers rebound damping on one leg and compression on the other with convenient hand-adjustable dials right on top. No more getting down under the bike with a screwdriver to change compression damping settings at the bottom of the fork. The fork kit also adds preload adjustment to the front, which is useful in setting up the optimal attitude of the bike.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

The TracTive Tenere 700 fork kit utilizes an advanced closed-cartridge system that separates the oil from the air in a closed chamber pressurized with nitrogen gas. With the oil under pressure, it won’t foam or cavitate when heat builds up during aggressive riding like it can with a standard open-cartridge fork. Air bubbling in your fork oil causes a reduction in damping performance and doesn’t keep the internals well lubricated either. The main benefit is smooth and consistent performance that won’t taper off, along with more-precise damping adjustments.

Damping and bump absorption is further improved with the use of a large 35mm cartridge piston, one of the biggest among aftermarket suspension suppliers. This big piston facilitates high oil flow transfer during compression and rebound for maximum damping control — the more oil you can transfer, the more you can slow down fork movement. And when you’re really getting down to the end of your suspension travel during a big impact, there’s a hydraulic end stop waiting in reserve to help prevent any hard bottoming. (MSRP: $1,695)

Rear Suspension Upgrade

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

Just getting the stock Tenere 700 airborne a few inches off the ground can sometimes lead to bottoming out the rear suspension, especially if you’re a rider in the 200+ pound range. To combat this, TracTive swaps the stock shock for a much beefier unit that features a CNC-machined 6082 T6 aluminum housing with a hardened 42CRMo4 piston rod attached to a stout 46mm damping piston, along with high-strength bearings and stainless-steel bushings.

Like the fork kit the TracTive X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel rear shock increases the travel of the suspension, raising it to 8.9 inches in the rear. Damping is provided through high-flow oil channels, low-friction seals, an off-road specific shim stack, and an external reservoir containing significantly more oil and cooling surface than the stock shock. This ensures predictable, stable, fade-free performance in the rough stuff.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

In addition to rebound damping adjustability, the shock features separate high- and low-speed compression damping adjusters to provide more precise tuning of the rear suspension’s behavior for both quick hits and slower undulations on the trail. All damping adjustments are performed using convenient clickers for quick changes on the fly, instead of tools like the stocker. The preload adjuster also has a greater range of adjustment to support higher loads that may occur during travel, especially two-up. In addition, the shock can be purchased with or without a hydraulic ‘hand dial’ preload adjuster (HPA) that enables quick and easy preload adjustments for varying loads without tools.

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

If the longer travel and more-effective damping aren’t enough to counter a particularly big hit, the TracTive X-Treme Pro shock is equipped with a Position Dependent Damping System (PDSII) as a final defense against hard bottoming. The PDSII is a secondary damping piston mounted on top of the main damping piston. When a big hit occurs, this second damping piston enters a cup at the end of the compression stroke that creates an additional damping force. It’s like a high-tech bump stop that effectively absorbs and dissipates energy in the final phase of compression, when needed. Minimizing the number of big impacts during long off-road rides not only improves comfort and safety but also reduces wear and tear on the bike and body. (MSRP: $1,395)

Custom-Tuned Suspension

While the installation of both the fork kit and replacement shock can be done by anyone with basic mechanical skills, the technical fine-tuning work is performed at the suspension shop. Upon purchase, you’ll fill out a form that details exactly how your suspension gets configured before your products are shipped out. Both the X-Treme Pro fork kit and replacement shock get custom springs and application-specific tuning based on the rider’s weight and intended usage, whether your focus is racing, overlanding, two-up touring, or technical trail exploring.

If you’re not the long-legged type and want to keep the stock T7 ride height, you can also opt for the standard height X-Treme Pro fork and shock upgrade kit instead of the ‘Long Travel’ option. You still get all the benefits of a premium aftermarket suspension with technology on par with what top-level racers are using, like the improved damping performance and hard bottoming resistance. TracTive also has a low suspension X-Treme fork and shock kit that reduces suspension travel by about 0.8 inches (-20mm) for those that want to drop the seat height even more.

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

All TracTive products are fully serviceable and include a 2-year warranty. Pricing for the X-Treme Pro Long Travel shock starts at $1,395 and $1,695 for the fork kit. Not a bad investment considering that after upgrading a new Tenere 700 you’d still have a few thousand dollars in your pocket for additional mods when compared to purchasing a KTM 890 Adventure R, as well as a roughly 15-pound lighter machine with higher-spec suspension.

So if you are looking to upgrade your beloved T7 with the suspension Yamaha should have put on it from the factory (even better in fact), TracTive’s X-Treme Pro kits are definitely worth a look. The kit is also a compatible upgrade for the Tenere 700 World Raid and Extreme models for those who live overseas. Check out the TracTive website where you can see the range of options for the Tenere 700 and search local suspension shops that carry their products.

Over 10,000 hotel workers could go on strike this fall. Here's what travelers can expect.

  • Over 10,000 hotel workers are planning to go on strike this month.
  • The workers, including housekeepers, servers, and front desk clerks, are pushing for higher wages and fairer workloads.
  • Travelers at strike-affected hotels should expect a significantly different experience.

Over 10,000 hotel workers are planning to go on strike this fall. The move could disrupt fall travel at some of the nation's most popular hotels as workers fight for better pay and working conditions.

As of Wednesday, over 50 hotels across the U.S. in major cities such as San Francisco and Honolulu have already voted to strike. At six resorts in Hawaii – including the largest in the state, the Hilton Hawaiian Village – 94% of workers voted in favor of striking. Throughout the week, thousands more will decide whether to join the strikes, according to the hospitality labor union UNITE HERE.

The workers, including housekeepers, servers, and front desk clerks, are pushing for higher wages and fairer workloads after enduring increased burdens from the pandemic.

"Since COVID, the hotels have rebounded, but wages have not caught up," Gwen Mills, International President of UNITE HERE, told USA TODAY. "We need wages to catch up so one job can be enough."

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Hotel markets in most major U.S. cities have recovered as of last summer, with hotel prices having increased to match the demand. However, workers have yet to see the benefits of the rebound.

During the pandemic, hotels reduced staffing and guest services like daily housekeeping, forcing fewer employees to take on more work despite guest bookings picking back up. From 2019 to 2022, the number of workers per 100 occupied rooms in the U.S. hotel industry dropped by nearly 14%, according to the union.

"The workloads have gotten exhausting and overwhelming," Mills said.

How does housekeeping at hotels work? Here's what is happening behind the scenes.

"I am ready to strike for wages that allow me to take care of my family and proper staffing that allows me to take care of guests," said Rachel Santos, hostess at Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa in Waikiki and member of UNITE HERE. "I love my job, and I love my family, so I’ll do whatever it takes to protect them both."

Here's what travelers need to know about the historic number of hotel strikes happening in August.

Why are hotel workers going on strike?

Every contract between the union and hotels expires at the end of August, and union representatives have been locked in negotiations with the hotels, such as asking to hire more staff. If no progress in the bargaining process is made when the contract expires, workers can vote on authorizing a strike. However, it's somewhat of a last resort.

"We try to resolve as many issues before striking; we don't want to strike, but we will," Mills said.

According to the union, the current working conditions are unsustainable for the hotel workers, who are simply trying to make a living.

"My job was always painful, but now it’s even worse," Consuelo Escorcia, who works as a lobby attendant at San Francisco Marriott Marquis cleaning public areas, told USA TODAY in a statement. The hotel used to have six lobby attendants but downsized to two or three since COVID. "I’ve sacrificed so much for this job over the years. I had to have four surgeries in my hand and shoulder. But in return, the hotel has only made my job harder."

Which hotels are being impacted?

A total of 66 U.S. hotels in Boston, Providence, New Haven, Honolulu, Baltimore, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Seattle have their contracts expiring by the end of the month. However, that doesn't mean every hotel will go on strike depending on how negotiations go. The properties span the Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and Omni brands, with some of the most well-known being Boston's Fairmont Copley Plaza, San Francisco's Palace Hotel and Honolulu's Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, and Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Michael D’Angelo, head of labor relations – Americas, Hyatt, said:

Our colleagues are the heart of our business, and Hyatt has a long history of cooperation with the unions that represent our employees, including UNITE HERE. We remain optimistic that mutually beneficial agreements can be reached without strikes, and we look forward to continuing to negotiate fair contracts and recognize the contributions of Hyatt employees.

Hilton, Marriott and Omni did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Travelers can visit the labor union's website to see whether their hotel staff is at risk of going on strike.

How will the strike affect my trip?

Travelers at strike-affected hotels should expect a significantly different experience, as nearly all departments will be impacted. Although technically, the hotel is still open.

"You can expect a reduction in food and beverage (services), hotel housekeeping not being available, and the general premises not being kept up," Mills said. "All the workers doing that work are instead outside walking a picket line." Guests may see them on strike, too. "It can be loud protests."

According to D’Angelo, Hyatt properties have "contingency plans in place" to minimize any impact that potential strikes could have on hotel operations.

The union asks travelers to cancel their reservations and ask for a refund if their hotel is going on strike and use its website to find alternative "socially responsible union hotels" at their destination.

How long will the hotel strikes last?

Very likely well into the fall season. The negotiation process can take a while.

Khabarovsk Krai occupies a long swathe of Russia's Pacific coastline, a full 2000 kilometers of it, going as far south as Sakhalin and north to Magadan Oblast . At nearly 800.000 km², it's Russias fourth largest province. In the north, taiga and tundra prevail, deciduous forests in the south, and swampy forests in the central areas around Nikolaevsk-on-Amur . As a testament to its size there are more than 50 thousand lakes to fish in, more rivers and streams than you would care to count, and several mountain ranges intersect the region, including the northern reaches of the Sikhote-Alin mountains shared with Primorsky krai. The highest point is Mount Bery, towering nearly in fact, three quarters of the area is occupied by mountains and plateaus.

Tracking Hurricane Ernesto

By William B. Davis ,  Madison Dong ,  Judson Jones ,  John Keefe and Bea Malsky

Ernesto was a Category 1 hurricane in the North Atlantic Ocean Monday afternoon Atlantic time, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory .

The hurricane had sustained wind speeds of 90 miles per hour. Follow our coverage here .

What does the storm look like from above?

Satellite imagery can help determine the strength, size and cohesion of a storm. The stronger a storm becomes, the more likely an eye will form in the center. When the eye looks symmetrical, that often means the storm is not encountering anything to weaken it.

Ernesto is the fifth named storm to form in the Atlantic in 2024.

In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that there would be 17 to 25 named storms this year, an above-normal amount .

This season follows an overly active year, with 20 named storms — including an early storm later given the official name of “Unnamed.” It was the eighth year in a row to surpass the average of 14 named storms. Only one hurricane, Idalia, made landfall in the United States.

Typically, the El Niño pattern that was in force last season would have suppressed hurricanes and reduced the number of storms in a season. But in 2023, the warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic blunted El Niño’s usual effect of thwarting storms.

The warm ocean temperatures that fueled last year’s season returned even warmer at the start of this season, raising forecasters’ confidence that there would be more storms this year. The heightened sea surface temperatures could also strengthen storms more rapidly than usual.

To make matters worse, the El Niño pattern present last year is also diminishing, most likely creating a more suitable atmosphere for storms to form and intensify.

Hurricanes need a calm environment to form, and, in the Atlantic, a strong El Niño increases the amount of wind shear — a change in wind speed and/or direction with height — which disrupts a storm's ability to coalesce. Without El Niño this year, clouds are more likely to tower to the tall heights needed to sustain a powerful cyclone.

Tracking map Tracking data is from the National Hurricane Center. The map shows probabilities of at least 5 percent. The forecast is for up to five days, with that time span starting up to three hours before the reported time that the storm reaches its latest location. Wind speed probability data is not available north of 60.25 degrees north latitude.

Wind arrivals table Arrival times are generated from a New York Times analysis of National Hurricane Center data. Geographic locations use data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Natural Earth. Time zones are based on Google. The table shows predicted arrival times of sustained, damaging winds of 58 m.p.h. or more for select cities with a chance of such winds reaching them. If damaging winds reach a location, there is no more than a 10 percent chance that they will arrive before the “earliest reasonable” time and a 50 percent chance they will arrive before the “most likely” time.

History of Khabarovsk Krai

In the Middle Ages, the territory of today’s Khabarovsk Krai was inhabited mainly by the peoples of the Tungus-Manchu language group, as well as Nivkhs. In China they were known collectively as “wild Jurchen”. In the 13th-14th centuries, the Mongol rulers of China repeatedly organized expeditions to the lower Amur.

Russians began the development of the Far East in the 17th century. In 1639, a Cossack troop headed by Ivan Moskvitin reached the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The first stockade town was built in the mouth of the Ulya River. Later, Vasily Danilovich Poyarkov and Yerofei Pavlovich Khabarov were the first who started joining the Amur lands to Russia. Before Russians came here, the tribes of Daurs, Evenks, Natks, Gilyaks and others lived in this area (only about 30 thousand people).

The area was quickly populated by Russian settlers; new stockade towns were founded. But the process was interrupted due to a conflict with the Qing Dynasty. From the 1680s, Manchus started to fight against the Russian state.

More Historical Facts…

Russia could not move significant military forces to the Amur region and had to sign the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689). According to it, Russians had to leave the left bank of the Amur River but managed to uphold its rights for the area behind Lake Baikal and the Sea of Okhotsk coast.

In the 18th century, Okhotsk became the main Pacific port of the Russian Empire. Development of the northern coast of the Pacific, exploration of the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin prepared the basis for the return of the Amur region.

In 1847, Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov was appointed a governor-general of Eastern Siberia. He did his best to return the Amur area to the Russian Empire. The number of Russians in the region began to grow. In 1858, the town of Khabarovsk was founded.

As a result of the weakening of China during the Opium Wars, two agreements were signed - the Aigun Treaty in 1858 and the Beijing Treaty in 1860. The Russian-Chinese border was established on the Amur and Ussuri rivers.

In 1884, Zabaikalskaya, Amurskaya and Primorskaya regions were united into Priamurskoye region with the center in Khabarovsk. Until the late 19th century, the Amur area was settled slowly. The situation changed in the early 20th century. In 1900, the Trans-Baikal Railway was opened, in 1902 - the Chinese Eastern Railway.

As a result, the number of settlers grew rapidly. In 1900-1913, about 300,000 peasants from other regions of the Russian Empire came to the Amur area. There were three towns (Khabarovsk, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur and Okhotsk) on the territory, which makes Khabarovsk krai today. By 1915, there were more than six thousand settlements with a total population of 316,300 people in Primorskaya oblast.

The Civil War lead to a great number of deaths and economic collapse in Russia. The restoration of pre-war level of economy was achieved by 1926. New cities were built in the region - Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Birobidzhan. October 20, 1938, Dalnevostochny region was divided into Khabarovsky and Primorsky regions.

In 1947-1948, Sakhalin and Amur regions were separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1953, Magadan region was formed and separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1956, Kamchatka region became independent too. In 1991, the Jewish autonomous region was separated from Dalnevostochny region.

And if you’ve been too busy packing your suitcase to give that part much thought, we’re here to help. The toys, activity books, and food organizers ahead are intended to keep little hands clean, occupied and device-free on the road (and to save you from fielding the dreaded “are we there yet?” 75 times).

From folding activity trays with dry-erase boards to sliding bingo encouraging small passengers to keep their eyes on their surroundings, all of these products are loved by parents and caretakers, and have the reviews to prove it.

Whether you’re driving for days on end or just going to a family party a few hours away, you’ll be totally relieved to have these items on hand to keep car snacks where they’re supposed to be and your kids’ minds entertained until you finally reach your destination.

1. a travel tray with a white board for drawing.

Lap desk with storage pockets, shown with a child’s drawing mat, markers, eraser, and a framed photo of a puppy

With pockets, pouches, a tablet holder, and a dry-erase board, this kid's travel tray leaves no stone unturned. It's collapsable so it's easy to store in your trunk or backseat and has a removable cup holder for your little one's drink. This comes in 11 colors with a safety strap that goes around your car seat.

Promising review: "I got two of these for my kids to travel on an 8 hr road trip. They loved them!!! They mostly utilized them as a tablet holder and lunch-on-the-road surface, but both girls thanked me multiple times and asked if they could use it around town too, not JUST on road trips. Their cousins dragged their mom to the car, just so she could see, hoping she might get them some as well! Kid tested! Cousin approved!" — Julie

2. A cube-shaped cooler so kids can grab their own snacks

A young girl is sitting in a car seat next to a travel organizer on the backseat, which holds water bottles, snacks, and other travel essentials

Keep fresh snacks and drinks in easy reach with this kid-friendly car cooler. With cup holders on the front and pockets and pouches on the side, you can easily organize wipes, tissues and dry snacks before hitting the road. It comes with a carrying strap, so you can use it as a travel cooler, and has a removable tray on top, so kiddos can eat while sitting in the car.

Promising review: "I loved that this zipped up so you can contain food and books and toys in the backseat with them. My kids got their own toys and apples and chips, so it made the trip easier. My kids are 5 and 8. This is fine for adults, too, obviously, but the zip is fine once you figure out how to install it, and the cooler is very nice. Kept food good for two days. We went into the hotel and left fruit in the cooler, and it was fine the next day." — The Lance A Lot

The perfect snack container doesn't exi... wait. With soft flaps that are easy for little fingers to reach into, these spill-proof containers are a must for the car.

Promising review:  "I do not know how to have a child snack without these. It holds in anything around cereal size and can be dropped without a mess. This leads to more healthy options during car rides and less worry around the house. Personal favorites include dried fruit, sun chips, and Cheerios." — Edward

4. Or a spill-proof tumbler with a special valve that keeps liquids in even when it's upside-down

Contigo water bottle with a lid and straw, featuring a design of numerous small fish swimming around the middle section

With over 20,000 positive reviews, it's easy to see why parents and caretakers love this spill-proof kid's tumbler. It comes in 10 colors and has a special seal so your kiddo can drop their bottle or turn it upside down without it leaking.

Promising review: "This tumbler is amazing, our 1 year old uses this in the car and we don’t have to worry about any of the contents leaking out of the cup is tipped over or dropped. Speaking of dropping, this cup has been dropped hundreds of times and has not cracked in any way. It’s very durable, and I would recommend it for little ones. The straw splits in half and has a diaphragm in the middle that prevents fluid from passing unless the straw is being sucked on. While this prevents any spills it can be a bit of a chore to clean and sanitize. Personally, I would rather spend an extra minute cleaning a straw vs an extra hour cleaning a car interior!" — D M Almaraz

Just some good old-fashioned family fun to break up a a road trip. Their constructed well and hold up after some use. Careful not to bend them too much though other they won't work properly. We tried to avoid screens and movies for as long as possible, and this "tablet" was a huge success. This was a brand-new activity for the trip, and it was the most-requested toy by far. Our daughter loved scribbling and then erasing it with a button. She had a lot of fun figuring out what else besides the stylus could draw on the tablet. It's super lightweight." — Halle
