And this season, the Food Network star is upping the fierce nature of the randomizer by including wildcards that get progressively more difficult throughout each round, per a release.

Guy Fieri on his career and the upcoming finale of 'Tournament of Champions'
Ayesha Rascoe
NPR's Ayesha Rasco speaks with Food Network host Guy Fieri about his career, and the upcoming finale of one of his shows, "Tournament of Champions."
(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS")
GUY FIERI: It's the most dreaded device in the culinary universe. It is the randomizer.
AYESHA RASCOE, HOST:
Guy Fieri isn't just another celebrity chef. He's the commander, the big cheese, the top hot dog of an entertainment empire stretching across numerous TV shows.
FIERI: Let's light things up.
RASCOE: One of them, "Tournament Of Champions," is wrapping up its fourth season next Sunday, April 9. While his breakout hit, "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," affectionately known as the Triple D, is finishing its 16th year on the Food Network. Guy Fieri joins us now. Welcome to the program.
FIERI: That's quite the intro, Ayesha, quite the intro.
RASCOE: We have to make sure we get it correct (laughter).
FIERI: Yeah. You had all of my stats.
RASCOE: "Tournament Of Champions" is a competitive cooking show. And this season, you added a twist - the randomizer wild card. Tell me about that.
FIERI: Well, if you understand what the randomizer is, it's five different spinning wheels that pick the protein, the vegetable, the type of food, a particular piece of equipment that must be employed and the time. Well, we thought, why don't we take it one step further? Everybody's kind of getting a little bit, you know, of an idea of what goes on. Let's try doing something different. We took the time out, and we said, OK, we'll give you a guaranteed amount of time, but you're going to get a wild-card ingredient or equipment that's going to be put into play. And it definitely sent everybody spinning this year.
RASCOE: What were some of the wildest, like, combinations that you got, and, like, were people able to, like, roll with it?
FIERI: If I were to pick five ingredients out of your cupboard and some piece of equipment and said, you've got to use this juicer. You've got to take these sardines, this peanut butter, and you need to make me an all-American dish fried in 30 minutes, you're watching Michelin-starred chefs; you're watching gurus of the industry; you're watching people that have done it all look at me with their eyes crossed and just want to go, where's my mom? Can I go home?
RASCOE: Yeah. Yeah. So you became famous thanks to "Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives," as we mentioned, the Triple D, And so let's listen to part of an episode when you tried a peanut butter burger in Logan, Utah.
(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "DINERS, DRIVE-INS AND DIVES")
ELISEO GARCIA: Let's build our peanut butter burger. Put the cheese and the bacon.
FIERI: Don't overdo it on the peanut butter.
GARCIA: Put aioli, sriracha sauce. It has tomatoes and onions - hamburger. And there you go, sir.
RASCOE: How did it taste? Let's be real. How did it taste?
FIERI: It's not going to be my first choice...
RASCOE: OK (laughter).
FIERI: ...But not because it wasn't made properly or not because people don't love it. I'm not a huge peanut butter fan in that context.
RASCOE: Tell us how this show came about. Like, you go all over the country, and you go to all these places where there are, you know, unique local gems and try the food. Like, how did this come about?
FIERI: The interest of it is these mom-and-pop restaurants. And I was a mom-and-pop restaurant guy. You know, when I started out with my first restaurant when I was 26. And I know how difficult it is to get the attention, to get the recognition, to get the awareness, to get the support. And so we said, let's build a show that goes around and finds funky joints, places that are not on the beaten path, places that you might not stop at every time 'cause it's got a funny name, or the building's not the most picturesque, or it's not in the greatest part of town, and let's go highlight these places.
And when we first started it, people said, you know, what do you think? Yeah. It'll do for a couple of years. You know, we'll probably run out of places. I could do this for another hundred years because the mom-and-pop restaurants are really kind of like the the fabric, the tent poles of the community. I mean, everybody has their favorite burger joint, their dive joint, their getaway place. It's these mom-and-pop joints that are really kind of the - they're the heart and soul.
RASCOE: You always seem to love the food. Like, is there - did you ever eat anything that you were like, this don't really taste good? 'Cause whenever I eat something I don't like, you could see it on my face immediately, from the first bite.
FIERI: I'm not selling you a bag of beans. If I don't like it, you won't see it. We do so much research. By the time I'm going to a location, I've had such a chance to understand what this restaurant's about. Like, I'm doing research right now for another shoot we're getting ready to do. And I've got five researchers that work, and they've sent me the research binder, and the research on the restaurant's about 15 pages long. And there's so many things I can tell about a restaurant before I'm actually at the restaurant that I can know whether or not it's going to work.
RASCOE: Like, what are some of the key things?
FIERI: Well, how do they make chicken? Do they make their stocks, they make their salad dressings? Do they make their - they're a pizza place. Do they make the pizza dough? They're a bakery. Do they bake the buns? How did it come together? Who are they? How did they learn? - all this kind of stuff.
RASCOE: Over the years, the types of restaurants that you go to on the show have kind of broadened. Like, at the beginning it was a lot of barbecue joints and burger joints, and you still have those. But now it seems like there's more Asian fusion. You have Haitian food, Mediterranean. Like, was this a conscious shift to kind of make sure you were diversifying? 'Cause there's a lot of food in the U.S. representing all these different cultures.
FIERI: It wasn't necessarily conscious. I don't know that I do anything consciously. I don't know that I'm that smart. It's where the food's going, you know? It's like vegetarian. I was just at my son's high school doing some projects with them for their culinary program. And we were talking about food diversities - you know? - what's going on with gluten intolerance and in vegetarian- and veganism. And I'm like, it's what's happening. It's the truth. It's the future. I'm looking for places with character. I'm looking for places with story, and I'm looking for places that make great food. And whatever combination that is, bring it.
RASCOE: I want to ask you about what your relationship is to food, 'cause food can be so complicated. You know, a lot of the food we want to eat is unhealthy. And then people can judge you if you don't eat well and the way you eat and what you eat and how you eat. There is, like, all of this stuff.
FIERI: People shouldn't judge people. If you want to eat chips that were processed and made in Schenectady in a in a factory and shipped across the country on a rail - have at it, you know?
RASCOE: I eat Doritos, so that's what I have every Sunday morning for (laughter) breakfast.
FIERI: Doritos have their place in history, all right?
RASCOE: Yes. Yes.
FIERI: We make taco salad at my house, and Doritos make it on there. The thing is this. I'm your cook. I'm not your doctor, OK? I'm not here to tell you what you should and shouldn't do to yourself. I do think people should be more conscious. Personally, I am trying to be very conscious about what I eat, when I eat, how I eat. I eat way different now than I did 15 years ago. I've learned more. I've become more educated about food and about how food makes me feel. You know, we're starting to have such a better education as a society about what food does and doesn't do.
RASCOE: I just want to ask you really quickly - the Triple D, the "Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives" - it's become its own form of comfort viewing. So it's not just comfort food. It's comfort viewing. How does that feel for you?
FIERI: Well, I think, Ayesha, it's kind of like you. Look at the smile you have on your face talking to me and sharing all this information with the world. And I think it's in human nature that we have this innate feeling of responsibility to try to take care of one another and to love one another and support one another and honor one another. I'm a cook. I'm a dude from Northern California. I don't have any special talent other than just I love to laugh. You know, I love to have a good time. And something I'm doing and putting together is making people feel happy and giving people comfort. For me, that's the greatest gift.
RASCOE: That's Guy Fieri, host of a number of shows on the Food Network, most recently the fourth season of "Tournament Of Champions."
Thank you so much for coming on.
FIERI: Thank you.

Here are Tournament of Champions 5’s chefs—minus one, plus four
Food Network’s best competition, Tournament of Champions , is returning for season five in mid-February, about a week earlier than season four premiered.
And it’ll be preceded by a new mini-spin-off competition, Food Network announced today.
Tournament of Champions season five’s 32 chefs were also announced, and include all four previous winners: Maneet Chauhan, Tiffani Faison, Mei Lin, and Brooke Williamson.
One chef not on the cast list is Darnell Ferguson, whose show has been taken off the air after his recent arrest. That he is not competing is surprising since he has represented the East Coast in all four of the previous seasons of TOC.
However: Of the chefs announced today (the full lists are below), the east coast list has 13 chefs, while the west coast list has 14. A bracketed competition doesn’t exactly work with an odd number of chefs.
Hmm. Sounds to me like someone was edited out—and perhaps even lost their first battle, making that a lot easier than if he’d gone deeper into the competition. If that’s what happened, I wonder if we’ll see that battle at all, and if not, how the show will acknowledge a winner that just appears in the second round.
With only 27 chefs announced out of 32, there will be four more chefs added to the lists, for a total of 16 on each side.
Those four will be chosen in a show-before-the-show, Tournament of Champions V: The Qualifiers , which will air on Feb. 7 and 14 at 8. That will feature “16 chefs go[ing] head-to-head to win four coveted 8th seed slots in the tournament bracket,” according to Food Network.
Tournament of Champions season five itself will premiere Feb. 18, airing Sundays at 8. It’ll be preceded by another special on Feb. 14: Road to Tournament of Champions V , which recaps last year’s competition.
TOC V will continue for just under two months, with the finale airing Sunday, April 7.

The Tournament of Champions III brackets revealed
By d. goodman | jan 28, 2022.
With Tournament of Champions III set to arrive on Food Network on February 27, many were wondering how long foodies would have to wait to find out who was competing and how the seeding and brackets would shake out.
Turns out we wouldn’t have to wait long at all. Not only have all 32 chefs taking part been revealed but Food Network has also dropped the seeding and bracket breakdown on their website.
On a side note, someone should really explain to the cabler that revealing the seeding and brackets could be a show all unto itself. For foodies everywhere, this is our own version of March Madness. There’s no reason whatsoever not to hype the hell out of this. Of all the food competitions, Tournament of Champions , despite it’s faults , is still one of the most exciting culinary shows out there.
But back to the brackets and seeding. As everyone knows, the number of chefs has been doubled from 16 to 32. That means this season we get four brackets, two for the East and two for the West, an A bracket and a B bracket.
How do the brackets break down on Tournament of Champions III?
HERE WE GO! 🔥 @GuyFieri ’s #TournamentOfChampions is back for an epic third season starting Sunday, Feb. 27 @ 8|7c! 🔪 In true Fieri fashion, this year will be the biggest, best season of TOC yet, with a supersized bracket featuring a whopping 32 chefs: https://t.co/VDtLHwys4h . pic.twitter.com/9ZEqNHfxJE — Food Network (@FoodNetwork) January 18, 2022
As everyone also knows, the Final Four from Tournament of Champions II get automatic bids the following year and this season, that means each is a No. 1 seed in their own bracket. Season 1 winner Brooke Williamson is the No. 1 seed in the West Coast A bracket while Jet Tila is the No. 1 seed in the West Coast B. Likewise, Tournament of Champions II winner Maneet Chauhan is the No. 1 seed in the East Coast A bracket and Darnell Ferguson is the No. 1 seed in East B.
After that, you see a solid mix of returning chefs from both Season 1 and 2 as well as a lot of fresh faces, some of which are completely new to Food Network. The battles in the first round are going to break down like this:
West Coast A No. 1 seed Brooke Williamson vs No. 8 seed Crista Luedtke No. 2 seed Michael Voltaggio vs No. 7 seed Phillip Frankland Lee No. 3 seed Tim Hollingsworth vs No. 6 seed Tiffany Derry No. 4 seed Aaron May vs No. 5 seed Brian Malarkey
West Coast B No. 1 seed Jet Tila vs No. 8 seed Carlos Anthony No. 2 seed Antonia Lofaso vs No. 7 seed Joe Sasto No. 3 seed Shirley Chung vs No. 6 seed Marcel Vigneron No. 4 seed Chris Cosentino vs No. 5 seed Elizabeth Falkner
East Coast A No. 1 seed Maneet Chauhan vs No. 8 seed Richard Hales No. 2 seed Amanda Freitag vs No. 7 seed Madison Cowan No. 3 seed Tiffani Faison vs No. 6 seed Bryan Voltaggio No. 4 seed Kelsey Barnard vs No. 5 seed Eric Adjepong
East Coast B No. 1 seed Darnell Ferguson vs No. 8 seed Aarthi Sampath No. 2 seed Christian Petroni vs No. 7 seed Tobias Dorzon No. 3 seed Michael Psilakis vs No. 6 seed Einat Admony No. 4 seed Karen Akunowicz vs No. 5 seed Justin Sutherland
Looking at the brackets and seeding a couple things stand out. First, the East Coast sees a lot of new additions to the tournament compared to the West. In fact the East Coast B bracket is almost entirely new faces while the A side sees many returning chefs.
How Aaron May got a No. 4 seed is anyone’s guess after the way he went out in his first battle last season. Amanda Freitag’s No. 2 seed seems generous after her first round exit last year and the same could be said of Tiffani Faison at No. 3.
However, considering you’re dealing with a lot of new chefs and an expanded bracket, overall the seeding seems pretty fair. Will we see Chauhan vs Petroni Round 3? Will Michael Voltaggio finally defeat his nemesis Brooke Williamson? Will Antonia Lofaso finally win the belt she so desperately wants?
Fans will start to get some answers in a few weeks when Tournament of Champions III begins on February 27.

Guy Fieri Says ‘Tournament of Champions’ Chefs Are Like ‘Top Athletes’
'Tournament of Champions' quarterfinals battle: OKC's Kevin Lee to face Antonia Lofaso
If you've been following the progress of Oklahoma City's chef Kevin Lee on season 5 of Guy Fieri's "Tournament of Champions" or reading my recaps, then you already know he's been giving Oklahoma a great name in the competition.
Lee, who earned a spot in the bracket after beating out three competitors in "Tournament of Champions: The Qualifiers," has taken on and beaten season 1 champion Brook Williamson and "Dumpling Mafia Queen" Shirley Chung in his first two rounds of tournament action.
Now, he's in the show's Great 8 and set to battle Antonia Lofaso in the quarterfinals this Sunday.
More: OKC chef Kevin Lee to appear on Food Network's 'Tournament of Champions: The Qualifiers'
Who is chef Kevin Lee?
Lee is the chef-owner of the recently revamped Birdie's by Chef Kevin Lee , 2201 NW 150 Street in Edmond. He has competed on multiple Food Network shows in the past, including "Beat Bobby Flay," " Alex vs. America ," " Guy's Grocery Games " and " Superchef Grudge Match. "
Lee was born in Norman, but spent a lot of time moving around while growing up, with stints in Korea, Connecticut, Washington state and Oklahoma.
While studying hospitality management at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Lee took a basic cooking course and fell in love with the kitchen.
Lee is a graduate of The Coach House Apprenticeship Program. Throughout his career, Lee has worked for some of Oklahoma City's best restaurants, including time at Vast and as the culinary director for The Social Order, owners of The Jones Assembly, along with involvement — in menu planning and creation — at other concepts like Chae Modern Korean and Gogi Go.
During the course of the show, Fieri has nicknamed Lee "The Dragon Slayer" due to his ability to take on and beat incredibly challenging competitors.

Who is Antonia Lofaso?
Lofaso is an Italian-American restaurateur and chef now based in Los Angeles, California but who originally hails from Long Island, New York.
A graduate of the French Culinary Institute (now the International Culinary Center), Lofaso is the executive chef and partner in numerous L.A. restaurants including Dama, Black Market Liquor Bar, The Local Peasant, Scopa - Italian Roots and more.
She has competed and judged extensively on cooking competition shows, with multiple appearances on Top Chef, Cutthroat Kitchen, Guy's Grocery Games and more. She also appeared on an episode of Selena + Chef with Selena Gomez.
Lofaso also hosts Food Network's Beachside Brawl competition and has competed on all five seasons of Tournament of Champions.
Fieri nicknamed Lofaso "The Warrior Princess" after years of collaboration and working together.
What will happen in the quarterfinals?
The quarterfinals begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. Both chefs will face off with the "dreaded" randomizer selecting their fates for the ingredients, tools and more required for their dishes which will be blind tasted by a panel of renowned culinary experts.
The person who advances in the competition could end up battling another past champion like Maneet Chauhan or Mei Lin who both remain in the competition.
So, will Kevin Lee survive his quarterfinals bracket challenge? Will he come out ahead of Lofaso? You'll have to tune in Sunday to find out, or check back for a recap from yours truly.
Tournament of Champions S2E5 recap: Unlikely winners and a global randomizer?
By cristine struble | apr 5, 2021.
As the quarterfinals await, Tournament of Champions posed a simple question. Are the chefs just losing a battle or did a dish really win? Sometimes the answer is clearer than Food Network fans realize.
Going into this Tournament of Champions episode , two first round battles needed to be decided. Although last week’s win by Tiffani Faison over Amanda Freitag might have surprised some, the reality is that the judges’ opinions vary. Is there a secret answer to the randomizer riddle that the judges are looking for?
For the first battle, Bryan Voltaggio took on Christian Petroni. Although Petroni had a higher ranked seed, many people though that the Top Chef veteran, Bryan Voltaggio, could earn a big knock out. Although Voltaggio might have come up short of the Top Chef crown, the reality is that his creativity has impressed many people.
Going into this first round battle, the randomizer presented pork shoulder, honey crisp apples, food mill, braised and 35 minutes. Looking at this list of ingredients, it seemed slanted towards Petroni. In some ways, the comfort food ingredients lacked a spark that could get Voltaggio’s innovation to skyrocket. To say that this combination looked like a big soft ball that a chef could hit out of the park is an understatement.
For his dish, Petroni presented a pork braciole. While the classic Italian style dish brought big flavor, the dish was diminutive. While it might be a perfect portion for a tasting menu, everyone commented how small it was. But, the dish was well balanced, even though it was just a few bites.

Bryan Voltaggio presented an elevated twist on pork chops and apple sauce. Even with that playful approach, he was able to showcase pork two ways (pork milanese and pork sausage) and apple two ways. Usually using ingredients in multiple ways scores high with the judges, but not every time.
The judges felt that the dish didn’t quite come together. It lacked a high acid to balance the other flavors. Given all the techniques, ingredients and thoughtfulness, the criticism seemed unusual.
As the scores were revealed, Petroni beat Voltaggio. The difference came down to flavor, even though Voltaggio had a resounding win in the plating category.
Although this outcome fit the seedings, many Food Network fans would have guessed that Bryan Voltaggio would have won. In some ways, it seemed that he lost the battle versus Petroni winning. Did Voltaggio think that he had the competition in the bag or maybe it was a version of the Top Chef Quickfire curse still haunting him?
Could Tournament of Champions see another upset?
For the last first round battle, Maneet Chauhan took on Madison Cowan. While this battle seemed slanted on paper, the reality that that nothing is a given in Tournament of Champions.
In many ways, the randomizer might have given Chauhan a gift. With the combination of bison, navel oranges, steamer basket, fried and 35 minutes, it seemed that this random list of ingredients played into her global flavors expertise.
Although steamed and fried might not go together, Chauhan found a perfect dish. Her Saag Kofta was the solution. The fried bison was stuffed with cheese and then enrobed with the steamed spinach puree. The dish had many bright notes. It was very well played.

While Rocco Dispirito may not have found the clear line connecting all the components, he did appreciate the flavors. It seemed that Dispirito was having a problem with finding the composition in many of the dishes. Maybe he wasn’t able to see the forest through the trees.
For Cowan’s dish, the bison bulgogi was well cooked. But, he had many components on a plate that didn’t all come together. While each item was well cooked, there was no connection, which left the judges feeling that the dish lacked cohesion.
In a resounding win, Chauhan beat Cowan with a score of 83 to 76. Although the two dishes didn’t seem that far apart, the judges were more critical in this Tournament of Champions episode. Maybe the chefs didn’t get the Cliff Notes on how to appeal to this judging panel.
And now the Tournament of Champions Quarterfinals.
With the final first rounds complete, the quarterfinal matches began. In an unlikely twist, two battles are rematches and the first one is Brooke Williamson versus Michael Voltaggio. Although Michael Voltaggio had the highest scoring plate from round one , his dishes can be a little cerebral. Could that complexity cause him to falter in round two?
Since Tournament of Champions always looks to add another layer of difficulty, the randomizer has a new twist. It is now the global randomizer. That change means not only do the ingredients have a global twist, but the kitchen tools might also not be found at the local Target.
For this battle, the chefs had to combine duck breast, bamboo, takoyaki pan, Latin America and 40 minutes. If you didn’t know bamboo wasn’t just for koala bears, now you know that you can use those sprouts in a salad too. Also, the takoyaki pan might need to be added you’re your kitchen wish list.
Looking at the two dishes, the chefs went in different directions. Williamson’s dish had a pan roasted duck breast with pickled bamboo sprouts and a tortilla hay. All the judges commented that it was a beautifully constructed dish. There was a sense of whimsy to the balance of flavors.
These are two of the most-beautiful plates served so far. #TournamentOfChampions pic.twitter.com/udYE7T3L3o — Food Network (@FoodNetwork) April 5, 2021
Michael Voltaggio went with a carne asada style duck. The judges though that the spice mixture was convincing but they felt that the wonton empanada was a misstep.
The most interesting part of the battle was that Voltaggio used the takoyaki pan in a way that it was intended, a mold for his bamboo enrobed in avocado. But, Williamson only use the pan for toasting spices. It seems that Voltaggio should have received more points for proper usage of the pan.
With a final score of 91 to 88, Brooke Williamson was once again victorious over Michael Voltaggio. After his convincing win over Cat Cora, it was surprising that he didn’t prevail over Williamson.
Looking ahead to next week’s remaining quarterfinal battles, the global randomizer will make the difference. Even though it might be “random,” there is a secret to that spinning wheel. The chef who presents the judges with the best answer will earn another win.

Tournament of champions season 5 bracket and winners.
Tournament of Champions season 5 starts on Sunday, February 18th at 8pm on Food Network and 32* chefs are competing for the biggest prize yet of $150,000. While the main tournament doesn't start until February 18th, there are qualifiers that will air on Wednesday, February 7th and 14th where 16 chefs are competing for the four 8th seeds of the main tournament.
The chefs competing in the qualifiers for the 8th seeds are: Aaron May, Adriana Urbina, Bruce Kalman, Claudia Sandoval, Chris Scott, Demetrio Zavala, Kevin Lee, Gerald Sombright, Ilan Hall, Justin Sutherland, Leah Cohen, Maria Mazon, Michael Reed, Nini Nguyen, Pyet Despain, and Ray Garcia. There are eight chefs from the East and eight chefs from the West and there will be four winners of 8th seeds to join the actual tournament (2 for East and 2 for West).
The chefs competing in the main tournament East bracket include: Eric Adjepong, Karen Akunowicz, Kelsey Barnard Clark, Maneet Chauhan ( season 2 winner ), Tobias Dorzon, Tiffani Faison ( season 3 winner ), Amanda Freitag, Jose Garces, Stephanie Izard, Marc Murphy, Britt Rescigno, Jonathon Sawyer, and Dale Talde (plus the 2 qualifier winners).
It is important to note that there are only 13 chefs named for the East bracket and when you add the 2 qualifiers, you only get 15 instead of 16. The obvious speculation is that Darnell Ferguson was involved in Tournament of Champions which was taped before his arrest . He has been involved in every season to date, so there is no reason to believe he was not involved in this season. It will be interesting to see how they edit the show if that is the case, but I would expect he didn't make it far if they didn't do any re-filming.
The 16 chefs competing in the West bracket include: Carlos Anthony, Shirley Chung, Mei Lin ( season 4 winner ), Antonia Lofaso, Crista Luedtke, Brian Malarkey, Shota Nakajima, Joe Sasto, Adam Sobel, Casey Thompson, Jet Tila, Michael Voltaggio, season 1 champion Brooke Williamson ( season 1 winner ), and Lee Anne Wong (plus the 2 qualifier winners).
Simon Majumdar and Justin Warner will once again be providing the play-by-play analysis of the competition, and Hunter Fieri will again be following the action backstage with interviews. The judges this year include Donatella Arpaia, Scott Conant, Cat Cora, Rocco DiSpirito, Susan Feniger, Lorena Garcia, Carla Hall, Michael Mina, Eric Ripert, Marcus Samuelsson, Nancy Silverton, Ming Tsai, Michael White, Jonathan Waxman, Geoffrey Zakarian and Andrew Zimmern.

10 American Bakers Say Bonjour to All-New Pastry Competition, Next Baking Master: Paris
Catch the series premiere on Monday, May 6 @ 9|8c.
Shot on-location in the spectacular City of Lights and hosted by acclaimed pastry chef Stephanie Boswell and French-born chef and restaurateur Ludo Lefebvre, Food Network’s newest culinary competition Next Baking Master: Paris gives 10 ambitious and highly-skilled American bakers unprecedented access to the most iconic pastry shops, as well as mentoring from renowned French baking experts. Premiering Monday, May 6 at 9|8c, the series demands that competitors prove their mettle in the pillars of great baking and pastry: technique, artistry, flavor, innovation, and inspiration. Each week, the lowest performing baker will be sent home -- until only one is named Next Baking Master.
“As the world’s attention turns to the City of Lights leading up to this summer’s Olympic games, Paris is not only a location in Next Baking Master: Paris, it’s a main character,” said Betsy Ayala, Head of Content, Food, Warner Bros. Discovery. ”From walking the banks of the Seine to gain inspiration for romantic chocolate desserts to exploring the Paris farmers’ markets with their bountiful fresh produce, viewers will experience this incredible city though the eyes of our competitors.”
The 10 bakers competing for bragging rights, a full suite of France’s top-of-the-line professional kitchen appliances and baking equipment valued at $25,000 are: DeAndra Bailey (Baltimore, Maryland); Brooke De Jong (Dothan, Alabama); Jeremy Intille (Minneapolis, Minnesota); Lindsay Miller (Los Angeles, California); Keely Moore (Atlanta, Georgia); Paige Nickless (Brooklyn, New York); Joe Settepani (Morganville, New Jersey); Cedrick Simpson (Atlanta, Georgia); Robert Toland (Willingboro, New Jersey) and Jennalyn Walbolt (Union, New Jersey).
"This Paris experience is a once-in-a-lifetime dream for the chefs,” said Boswell. “As a professional pastry chef, I know the inspiration they received by visiting the city's most renowned patisseries and meeting the supremely talented experts was life-changing for these up-and-comers."
Added Lefebvre, “Though my culinary career and restaurants brought me to the United States more than 20 years ago, I was born, raised and grew up as a chef in France. It’s so cool to now welcome these competitors to Paris to live and breathe the amazing baking and pastry culture the city offers – it’s the best in the world. I am so excited.
In the supersized 90-minute premiere, Stephanie and Ludo welcome the bakers to Paris for their first challenge: make a dessert that represents their culinary point of view, while demonstrating their knowledge of French techniques. The bakers are then whisked away on a field trip to the luxurious Royal Monceau Hotel to meet pastry chef Quentin Lechat, sample his delicacies and learn about a fundamental French ingredient: cream. Once they get back to the kitchen, they must demonstrate both technique and innovation as they create one showstopping cake that features two uses of cream to determine who will be named the creme de la creme. Upcoming episodes feature a visit to famed Jade Genin Chocolate with a lesson from Jade herself, a quintessential French soufflé challenge and a trip to Ladurée, the most iconic patisserie in the world.
Fans can bring the sweet flavors of Paris to their home kitchen by watching the digital companion series hosted by Stephanie Boswell, in which she shares easy, can-do recipes for elegant French desserts. Plus, stay tuned to Food Network’s social pages for an exclusive tour of the Paris penthouse where the bakers will be staying. 2024 Masters: Jon Rahm's Champions Dinner menu includes 'Mama Rahm's Classic Lentil Stew' among other tapas
The 2023 masters winner unveiled his menu for the dinner to be held on tuesday during tournament week.
The 2024 Masters is still three weeks away, but preparations for tournament festivities are in full swing. On Tuesday, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm unveiled his Champions Dinner menu that features an array of tasty bites for past champions to indulge as they enjoy their week at Augusta National.
In addition to curating the menu and making sure the wine selection is up to par, Rahm will also be responsible for giving a speech in front of the likes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. Rahm told media Tuesday that the speech is, "living rent free in my head," and he hopes a couple glasses of wine will come to his aid.
Rahm's menu is decidedly different from the simplistic approach taken by 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler last year. The world No. 3 chose to pay homage to his Spanish roots, and the selections are indicative of this mission.
Let's take a look at what will be served.
Tapas y Pintxos
- Ibéricos — Acorn-fed Iberian Ham Cured Pork Loin
- Idiázabal con Trufa Negra — Idiázabal Cheese, Black Truffle
- Tortilla de Patatas — Spanish Omelette, Onions, Confit Potatoes
- Chistorra con Patata — Spicy Basque Chorizo, Potato
- Lentejas Estofadas — Mama Rahm's Classic Lentil Stew
- Croqueta de Pollo — Creamy Chicken Fritters Confit Potatoes
First Course
- Ensalada de Txangurro — Basque Crab Salad, Potato
Main Course
- Chuletón a la Parrilla — Basque Ribeye, Tudela Lettuce, Piquillo Peppers
- Rodaballo al Pil-Pil — Turbot, Navarra White Asparagus
- Milhojas de Crema y Nata — Puff Pastry Cake, Custard & Chantilly Cream
Players like Woods, Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo, Ben Crenshaw, Jose Maria Olazabal, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Scheffler and many others will attend the festivities. Last year's dinner was originally thought to be more contentious than in past years given the presence of players who defected to LIV Golf such as Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, but those concerns were quickly squashed.
Rahm will return to Augusta National this year not only as the defending champion but also as a LIV member after making the switch from the PGA Tour this offseason. The game's division, while front of mind for many players and fans alike, will take a backseat for at least this one night as some of the best to ever do it celebrate the man who did it the best at Augusta National in 2023.
