Mikel Landa to ride Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in 2022

Mikel Landa has started off his season at the Vuelta a Andalucia where he has been working on the service of his teammates and he has revealed what his plans are for the upcoming season.

“I hope to stay healthy and give the maximum this year. I’ve been up there in the grand tours before, so why not again? If the condition is there and the luck as well, I’d like to stand on another grand tour podium again," Landa said.

Vuelta a Andalucia: Wout Poels takes win on incredibly agressive stage and takes the race lead

“At first, we’ll really focus on the Giro and start well. There’s no problem combining the both of them. So once the Giro is over, there’s time to recover, and then we’ll take on the Tour," the Spanish climber said in an interview with VeloNews this week. Confirming the rumours that he would be targeting a double this year, as both routes are highly mountainous and provide a lot of opportunities for Landa to succeed.

He will start the final stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia today with the race lead on his teammate Wout Poels ' shoulders. The Dutchman went on the attack yesterday with Alexey Lutsenko in the final kilometers of what was a brutal day on the bike and has reached the race lead. Although he has been on the attack, Landa has intentionally dropped out of GC contention and has put in a lot of work for the team. He justifies, “it’s costing me a bit to get things going here at this race, I wanted to come into the season a little bit easier than most seasons, but we are little by little regaining the rhythm of racing.”

He concluded: “We start the season with the objectives of the Giro and Tour, so we’ll build slowly toward those goals, and then we’ll see how it goes."

Mikel Landa

This is the page about Mikel Landa, a Basque cyclist who has been riding for Bahrain Victorious since 2020. Landa finished third in the Giro d’Italia in both 2015 and 2022. Additionally, he has won three mountain stages in the Giro and one stage in the Vuelta a España.  IDLProCycling.com  keeps a close eye on all news related to Landa, along with maintaining a biography of his career.

Mikel Landa

Mikel Landa was born on December 13, 1989, in the Basque town of Murgia. As a junior, he was known as a talented climber and finished fifth in the Tour de l'Avenir in 2010. The following year, Landa turned professional with the Basque team Euskaltel-Euskadi. In his first year as a professional, Landa showed flashes of his considerable talent by winning the traditional mountain stage to Lagunas de Neila in the Tour of Burgos, defeating renowned climbers like Joaquim Rodríguez and the later doping-convicted Juan José Cobo. However, Landa had limited success in the next two years, and his team dissolved due to the inability to find a necessary second sponsor. He then moved to Astana.

Landa flourishes at Astana

In his first year (2014) with Astana, Landa mainly worked as a domestique and did not achieve notable results. However, 2015 marked his breakthrough as a top climber. Leading up to his main goal, the Giro d’Italia, he won a stage in his home race, the Tour of the Basque Country. Weeks later, he secured second place in the general classification of the Giro del Trentino-Melinda, behind Richie Porte.

Then came the Giro d’Italia. At Astana, Fabio Aru was of course the leader, with Landa as the main domestique. However, in the mountain stages, Landa proved to be at least as strong as his leader and clinched two stage victories. The first was an uphill finish to Madonna di Campiglio. The day after that stage, Landa triumphed again in an epic stage to Aprica, which included the steep Mortirolo climb. He broke away with Steven Kruijswijk and Alberto Contador, then outpaced his fellow escapees in the final stage. This earned him third place in the overall classification, behind winner Contador and team leader Aru.

After his successful performance, expectations for Landa naturally increased, and he aspired to be a team leader himself. Consequently, at the end of 2015, he moved to Team Sky. However, his first year with the British team was not successful. It began promisingly with a win in the Giro del Trentino, but he fell ill during his main goal, the Giro d'Italia, and had to withdraw. The rest of the year primarily involved working as a domestique for Chris Froome in the Tour de France.

Landa restricted in the Tour de France as Froome's lieutenant

The following year, Landa had big plans for the general classification in the Giro again, but once more, things went awry. During the approach to the final climb in the Blockhaus stage, he was involved in a major crash caused when a large part of the peloton went down after Wilco Kelderman collided with a motorcycle. Landa was able to continue and later won a mountain stage and the mountains classification in the race.

Coming out of the Giro in strong form, Landa was also selected for the Tour de France team. As in the previous year, his main role was to support Froome in the mountains. However, he was in such good form that he found himself in fifth place in the general classification after the first mountain stages. Team Sky, however, prioritized Froome's bid for the Tour victory over a potential podium finish for Landa. As a result, Landa couldn't attack his key rival for the podium, Romain Bardet, and ended up just one second shy of a podium finish.

Landa makes another misguided choice with Movistar

Landa's failure to secure a podium finish in the Tour led him once again to switch teams. His decision to join the Spanish team Movistar seemed sensible at first, especially considering the presence of top riders like Alejandro Valverde, Nairo Quintana, and Richard Carapaz, all aspiring to lead in grand tours. However, his choice proved detrimental. In 2018 and 2019, Movistar embarked on the Tour de France with high ambitions. Valverde, Quintana, and Landa, known as 'El Tridente' (The Trident), failed to make the desired impact. The trio struggled to work together, with nobody willing to sacrifice their chances for the others.

In the 2019 Giro d'Italia, Landa was initially the designated leader. Yet again, a teammate, Carapaz this time, emerged in a stronger position. After taking the pink jersey in the fourteenth stage, Carapaz's ascent relegated Landa to a secondary role, effectively caging him. Just like in the 2017 Tour, Landa narrowly missed the final podium. Frustrated with the same situation he faced at Sky and Astana, he decided to leave Movistar. He then joined Bahrain McLaren, assuming the role of the sole leader for the 2020 Tour de France. There, he finished fourth but was set back by injuries. In 2021, Landa aimed for both the Giro and Tour but failed to complete either.

Landa flourishes again in 2022

The year 2022 proved much more successful for Landa. Leading up to his main objective, the Giro d'Italia, he secured a third-place finish in the overall classification of Tirreno-Adriatico. In the Giro, Landa demonstrated that, barring misfortune, he remains one of the top climbers in the peloton. Although Jai Hindley and Richard Carapaz were a step ahead, Landa achieved his second Giro podium finish. He concluded the season with his first podium finish in a Monument, placing third in the Tour of Lombardy behind Tadej Pogacar and Enric Mas.

Second behind Pogacar and Vingegaard, top five in the Vuelta

In 2023, Landa aimed for the Tour-Vuelta combination. Leading up to these races, the then 33-year-old was already in good form, finishing seventh in both the Tour of Valencia and Tirreno-Adriatico, fifth in the Tour of Catalonia, and securing second in the Ruta del Sol (behind Tadej Pogacar) and in the Tour of the Basque Country (behind Jonas Vingegaard). Despite a cold, he managed a third place in the Walloon Arrow behind Mattias Skjelmose and Pogacar, followed by a withdrawal from Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Both the Dauphiné and the Tour did not go as planned, leading Landa to the Vuelta. There, he finished fifth in his home race, slotting in behind the Jumbo-Visma triumvirate and between his compatriots Juan Ayuso and Enric Mas. After three seasons with Bahrain-Victorious, Landa decided to join Soudal Quick-Step, where he signed for two seasons to support team leader Remco Evenepoel.

Mikel landa: ‘it’s a dream to win the giro d’italia’, bahrain-victorious star shakes off crashes, mishaps to rise to the top at blockhaus: 'i'd love to grab the pink jersey, and it would be a dream to have it, even if just for one day.'.

Mikel Landa is so far avoiding the traps and mishaps that can derail any grand tour bid and rolls into the second half of the Giro d’Italia poised for more.

The Bahrain-Victorious captain rode with the best Sunday at the first major date at Blockhaus, and reconsidered his GC options at the Giro’s halfway point.

“It’s a dream to win the Giro,” Landa said during a rest day press conference. “I’ve been for years dreaming of it, working on it, fighting for it, but I’ve always come up against rivals stronger than me, or traps along the way.”

  • The magic of Landa lives on in Giro d’Italia
  • Week Two: Saving the best for last at the Giro d’Italia

Going into Tuesday’s transition stage, Landa is right in the thick of the fight for pink.

He was fourth at the line at Blockhaus, where he emerged as a strong podium candidate when he marked an acceleration from Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and Romain Bardet (Team DSM).

Landa is known for his bad luck and for his great form, but also for his voodoo magic, his duende , his Landismo . He had it Sunday in spades on the Giro’s first major mountain finish.

After a string of bad luck, Landa saw luck turn his way Sunday.

It’s not exactly clear when or when, but on a sweeping left-hander in the front half in Sunday’s stage, Landa went down. He also crashed a second time and later had some equipment problems.

Luckily for him, Landa was not injured, and was able to continue. He then stood up in the pedals, and countered when Carapaz dropped the hammer.

It was only Landa and Bardet who could respond, though some other riders later regained contact on the upper reaches of the Blockhaus climb, it’s clear Landa is on good form.

“Sunday was at the same time a good day and a bad day,” Landa said. “It could have been a disaster, but in the end, it turned out well for me. The falls impacted me a bit and perhaps I wasn’t as aggressive as other moments.”

🗣️ @MikelLandaMeana about stage 9 @giroditalia : “In the end, the day was good for us, despite some crashes, not only for me but also for Pello and Buitrago. But I was in the front with the best of the day, which is a good signal.” 🔗 https://t.co/locu88Dri0 📸 @ChrisAuldPhoto pic.twitter.com/j9cIMlEvIX — Team Bahrain Victorious (@BHRVictorious) May 15, 2022

He starts Tuesday’s transition stage seventh overall at 29 seconds back, and just 15 seconds off a virtual podium spot.

“Up until now, things are going well, and this could be the year,” Landa said on Monday’s rest day. “Of course I can win. I am staying with the best in the mountains and there’s not a lot of time trials. I’d love to grab the pink jersey, and it would be a dream to have it, even if just for one day.

“I am happy, because the GC is not closed yet, and my options remain intact.”

This is Landa’s seventh career Giro start. He was third in 2015, a result that catapulted him into the peloton’s elite. Since then, he’s finished fourth, 17th and DNF’d in four subsequent Giro starts.

With a string week of transition stages stacked up across the Giro’s second week, Landa needs to avoid trouble and save his energy for the next major stages coming up this weekend.

Mikel Landa’s 2022 Bike Size

This page is about Mikel Landa’s 2022 Bike Size as he races the UCI World tour for team Bahrain – Victorious .

The Spanish pro rider from the Basque country is a GC contender type of rider. Landa finished third in the Giro d’Italia 2022 and 2015 General Classification and has won la Vuelta a Burgos twice among his great Palmares.

Landa Rides a Merida Scultura Size XS

Mikel Landa is 1m73 tall, weighs 60kg at his peak form, and rides the Merida Scultura size XS . The Merida Scultura 5th generation has been officially released as a 2022 bike model.

Sketch of Mikel Landa's Merida Scultura 2022 Bike Size XS

While the Merida Scultura 2022 has the same geometry as the Merida Reacto, by looking at Mikel Landa’s 2021 bike you will notice some details differing from his 2022 bike. The most visible one is the custom-made FSA stem aero handlebar combo with an aggressive angle. The FSA stem is 110mm and has an -15 Degrees, and Mikel uses a 400mm handlebars width.

I have found some nice pictures showing the new stem and seat post on Getty Images linked here and here . Enjoy!

The seat post is the other visual difference with Mikel’s 2021 Merida bike. Landa now rides with an FSA K-Force SB 32mm setback seat post, and his Prologo Scratch saddle is at 710mm in height from the center of the bottom bracket. The saddle’s setback is 70mm , and there is 560mm from the tip of the saddle to the handlebar’s virtual clamp axle.

Reliable Bike Set Up

The bikes of the team Bahrain – Victorious are rolling on Vision SL wheels and Continental Grand Prix 5000 S Tubeless tires. The gears are the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speeds disc groupset. Landa uses 172.5mm crankset arms’ length with 54/40 teeth chainrings which are Shimano’s new standard replacing the legendary 53/39.

The team uses the Shimano Dura-Ace SPD-SL pedals, Shimano PowerMeter and Garmin Edge GPS.

Landa’s bike Price and Wears

Mikel Landa races with a Rudy Project helmet and sunglasses, Ale cycling jersey and bib-shorts, Prologo gloves, and white color Sidi Wire 2 Carbon Air cycling shoes with Shimano yellow SPD-SL cleats.

The Merida Scultura 2022 of Mikel Landa cost approximately US$ 12,000.

Former winner Bernal to compete in 2024 Tour de France

Paris (AFP) – Colombian rider Egan Bernal, who has made a promising start to the season, announced on Wednesday he would be taking part in the Tour de France in a bid to repeat his triumph of 2019.

Issued on: 01/05/2024 - 14:23

"I'm done with the first part of the season, now in Colombia for a few days to prepare for a good Tour de France!!!", the Ineos rider wrote on his Instagram account.

The 27-year-old announced himself to the public five years ago when in the space of a couple of months he landed Paris-Nice, the Tour de Suisse and, crowned it with the Tour de France.

Two years later he collected his second major Tour with victory in the Giro d'Italia.

In January 2022, however, he suffered a serious training accident in Colombia that almost cost him his life.

Back in the saddle last year, Bernal had a difficult season, far below his pre-crash form. But he made a good start to 2024, finishing third in the Tour of Catalunya in March behind Slovenian Tadej Pogacar and Spaniard Mikel Landa.

Before returning to Colombia, he finished the Tour de Romandie in 10th place on Sunday.

Mikel Landa set for Tour de France and Basque Country Grand Depart in 2023

Bahrain Victorious teammate Pello Bilbao also missing Giro d’Italia for '23 Tour

Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) during the 2022 Giro d'Italia

After finally returning to the podium of a Grand Tour in 2022 at the Giro d’Italia, Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) has confirmed that he will be heading back to the Tour de France in 2023.

Landa, 32, told reporters on Friday that the opportunity to take part in the Tour de France , which begins on his home soil in Bilbao, was too good to miss.

Third in the Giro d’Italia last May, seven years after he finished in the same position in 2015, Landa, 32, last rode the Tour in 2020, claiming fourth overall.

His Basque teammate Pello Bilbao , who has regularly ridden the Giro in recent years and who claimed fifth last May, is also slated to head for the Tour's Grand Départ in Bilbao on July 1st. In addition, Bilbao will miss out on the Tour of the Alps next April, where he has consistently turned in top performances over the years, as he is set for a return to the Ardennes Classics.

Tour de France 2023 – Analysing the contenders Mikel Landa expects no miracles at Vuelta a España Landa eyes possible switch of Grand Tour plans after Giro d'Italia podium Bilbao reaps benefits of major race program change in Pologne

“Riding the Tour in the Basque Country is a very big motivation for me,” Landa said. “It’s a historic occasion and I am going to enjoy it. Racing over home roads will be a factor in my favour for sure.

“On top of that, the race route in 2023 has very little time trialling and is very mountainous, so that is ideal for me.”

Twice fourth in the Tour de France and only a few seconds off the podium in 2017, Landa said that his overall goals for 2023 were to be “close to the podium in the Tour, fight for a weeklong stage race like Itzulia or the Volta a Catalunya and to win a stage somewhere. It’s been too long since I last won.”

Regrettably for Landa, bad luck has been a constant in his career, with injuries and crashes wrecking his chances at times. But he said that returning to a podium on a Grand Tour at 32 as he did this May in the Giro constituted a much-needed boost to his confidence.

“It meant a lot to me,” the Basque rider said, “I’d been on the hunt for it since 2015.

"In 2021, I crashed and had to go home. So it was a really good moment, and it’s given me confidence that it’s possible again.”

Third in Il Lombardia at the end of the 2022 season in the teeth of some very serious opposition raised Landa’s confidence even higher, he said, as it came after a miserable Vuelta a España and saw him back in the game after a series of injuries, too.

“Lombardia was good because it came against some of the biggest names out there,” he said. “So it reminded me of what I can do.”

Apart from the Tour, Landa said that he would be perhaps adding in the Ardennes Classics and the Vuelta to his 2023 program. But the first priority of the upcoming season, he said, was to have a strong start to the year, “because the preparation is the same but with the Tour coming up, I hope to be more in the action in the early races as well."

Bilbao was equally enthusiastic about the Basque Country start for the Tour, saying directly that the Grand Départ was the reason for dropping the Giro from his 2023 plans.

“It’s the chance of a lifetime and you can’t ask for greater motivation than that. I know the first two stages perfectly, it’s my training grounds and the first stage goes through Gernika, my home town.”

“It’s hard to give up on the Giro, it’s a race where I’ve shone the best and which has given me the greatest confidence. But I know firsthand what doing a Giro and a Tour in the same year means and it would have been very hard to combine.”

Although Bilbao has now raced 14 Grand Tours, the 32-year-old has made only three Tour de France starts to date. But after beginning his season in January at the Tour Down Under, Bilbao said that he would be working 100 percent to be there in great form. “It’s the big objective of the season," he said.

Although the addition of Landa and Bilbao can only improve Bahrain Victorious’ chances in the Tour de France, Landa - who lavished praise on Bilbao’s role alongside him in Bahrain Victorious as a teammate "who's always helped me in the difficult moments" -  was realistic about his chances of taking on riders like Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

“It’s very hard to find a weak point in them, probably the most likely weak point would be if they had a bad day,” Landa said. “We’re all human, after all, so maybe it could happen.”
