George Ezra review, Glastonbury 2022: Beach-side BBQ vibes from the weekend’s least-secret set

Until the avalon stage makes a big deal of having booked the joshua trees, there can’t be a more obvious secret set than gold rush kid on the john peel stage, article bookmarked.

“I asked them, ‘can it not be completely secret? Can we tell them at some point?’,” George Ezra tells a crowd stretching several football-pitch lengths outside the John Peel tent.

Secret? Until the Avalon stage makes a big deal of having booked The Joshua Trees, there can’t be a more obvious secret set than Gold Rush Kid on the John Peel Stage. His official announcement a few hours ago was a bit like a governmental press release declaring Brexit rubbish – the Ezra-ites have been camping out all morning for a set of sun-kissed Sunday vibes that, considering the crush, is about as laid-back as the only sunny lockdown bank holiday on Bournemouth beach.

Ezra – an unpretentious and genuinely endearing purveyor of vaguely soulful and tropical Radio 2 pleasantness – nonetheless makes the entire field, inside and out, feel part of his beach-side barbecue of song. “Cassy O” is a hearty country pop jig, “Listen to the Man” the softest of soft reggae and “Hold My Girl” a stirring glower ballad. The shimmer of “Barcelona” sounds like Hertford flesh sizzling gently in the Catalonian sun, while “Green Green Grass” even comes with a story of stumbling across a funeral party in St Lucia, so close is Ezra to becoming the soft pop Judith Chalmers.

The much anticipated party really kicks off with “Paradise” and the crowd groove gently through the closing third, relishing the steel drum carnival that breaks out during “Blame it on Me” – otherwise a less corny Mumford & Sons – and probably breaking records for mass yodelling on “Budapest”.

“Shotgun”, dedicated to the people under rocks on Mars who “didn’t get the memo” about Ezra’s appearance, sends us drifting cheerily off towards Diana Ross feeling, a little smugly, like someones.

BRIT award-winning star George Ezra returned to Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena last night and the show was bigger and better than ever.

The singer, whose new album 'Gold Rush Kid' was released in June, kicked off his UK tour in Liverpool last night. Those who turned up at the arena were treated to a phenomenal show - thanks to one man, who knew just how to get the people of Liverpool up on their feet within seconds.

From the first song, every member of the audience was hanging on his every word. Some musicians must have a rare quality to make an arena gig feel intimate, and let me tell you - George Ezra's got it.

George had everyone immediately enraptured with 'Anyone For You', moving seamlessly between songs we've known for years and his newer material that's just as catchy. Throughout the show, he regaled us with tales from his travels, including trips to Barcelona and St Lucia.

Bringing a sense of intimacy to an enormous gig would be a feat for anyone else, but not George Ezra. He took the time to discuss where he was mentally and physically at the time of writing his latest album 'Gold Rush Kid' between songs.

Giving the audience this time made it feel like you could be sitting together having a cup of coffee. He performed another new song, 'Sweetest Human Being', accompanied by just a pianist. The song stunned the audience into silence, with its beautiful melody and peaceful lyrics.

While each and every song was incredible, the atmosphere that came over the crowd as 'Shotgun' began is impossible to describe. It was the biggest moment of the night and it was the final song of the evening - the one we'd all been waiting for.

George Ezra performing at The M&S Bank Arena

With the crowd singing along to every word and dancing away as the show came to a close. The crowd was enthralled as they sang - and screamed - the lyrics back to him. Clearly enjoying himself too, George danced along with fans and his incredible band, who kept the crowd dancing and clapping along throughout the set.

It was a night full of magic, laughter, dancing and some phenomenal music. The atmosphere was electric and I wish I could do it all over again tonight.

George Ezra

George Ezra

25th october 2022 spark arena, auckland, new zealand..

Review by Lauren Sanderson . Photography by David Watson .

We last saw musical heartthrob, George Ezra, in 2019 when he played Spark Arena and now over three years later, the British multi-platinum-selling singer returned with a bang last night as he and his band took over Spark Arena once again for the ‘Gold Rush Kids tour’.

But first, warming up the crowd was Kiwi singer-songwriter Georgia Lines who captivated us with her angelic vocals as she played a variety of originals and surprised us with a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Driver’s License’.

This was the third time that I’ve seen Ezra and his band perform and let’s just say if his past performances are anything to go by, I knew that we were in for an epic night of storytelling, musical wizardry, and a darn good time. Playing songs from both his new highly-anticipated album Gold Rush Kids as well as much-loved golden oldies that have dominated the charts globally, Ezra had us captivated from the get-go.

You can’t help but love George Ezra – he’s sweet, charming, funny, got an epic baritone voice, and was even rocking denim on denim – what’s not to love?

Skipping onto the stage like an excited school-kid, Ezra kicked off the night with ‘Anyone for You’. The upbeat track from his new album was vibrant and was the perfect start to the evening.

Much-loved single ‘Cassy O’ followed, which was the ultimate singalong number. Ezra kindly addresses the audience by saying “I’m sorry that it’s been so long, you know the deal if you want to singalong then you can.” Taking this as a personal invite, the crowd sang in unison to the catchy foot-tapping beat.

The good vibes continued as the contagious rhythm of ‘Get Away’ echoed around the arena, the upbeat bouncy tempo had us bopping along, shouting lyrics that touch on anxiety and escapism. Whether this was intentional or not, the juxtaposition of the cheerful music paired with the sadder lyrics has captured just how easy it is to hide your anxiety.

‘Pretty Shining People’ had us grinning from ear to ear. This radiant track spread positivity and joy amongst the crowd and Ezra looked like a Cheshire cat, as he watched us belt out the lyrics “Don’t we all need love? The answer is easy” .

Ezra reflects on his songwriting process, sharing that he fills notebooks with all of his experiences, “Then when I get home I write my songs” , he says before smoothly introducing hit-single ‘Barcelona’

His six-piece band left as things were stripped back for ‘Hold My Girl’. The audience and Ezra became one by this point as the vocals intertwined to create a beautiful duet. Next up was ‘In The Morning’, which gave off gospel vibes and had us mesmerized from start to finish.

Signature songs ‘Blame It On Me’ and ‘Budapest’ were definitely the crowd’s favourites, with their vivacious lyrics and unforgettable melodies. ‘Paradise’ literally transported us to a musical paradise filled with sax, trumpets, guitars, keys, and a whole load of energy.

New track ‘Green Green Grass’ is essentially a song about death but is more so about making the most of life and the joys that life can bring. Ezra’s positive outlook and warming nature really shone through in this track and made us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The night ended on such a high note as they played old-time classic ‘Shotgun’, a summer hit that just keeps on giving. Happiness and positive vibes were all that was left in the arena as we started to depart.

And that’s the magic of Ezra’s craft, he is a musical genius who is a master of his trade. He takes the simple things in life and turns them into something truly magical, delivering 90 minutes of pure happiness.

George ezra: m&s bank arena, liverpool – a review.

George Ezra Barnett (born 7 June 1993) an English singer, songwriter and guitarist played his first UK Arena tour opening at the UKs music capital – Liverpool on a Tuesday night.  His sold out concert had a capacity crowd of 14000 chanting and whooping fans, who wordperfect, sang back to him the lyrics to the majority of his songs.

The double denim wearing, twenty nine year old who could pass for Martin Clunes’ (Doc Martin) son was overjoyed to be performing as a headliner on an arena tour.  He eloquently, profusely continually thanked the crowd for not only coming out to see him and his band play tonight but also for all the support his fans have given him since his meteoric rise to fame.

After releasing two EPs , Did You Hear the Rain? (2013) and Cassy O’ (2014), Ezra rose to prominence with the release of his hit single, “ Budapest “, which reached number one in several countries. His debut studio album, Wanted on Voyage , was released in June 2014, reaching number one in the UK and the top ten in seven other countries. It was also the third-best-selling album of 2014 in the UK.

Ezra’s second studio album, Staying at Tamara’s , was released in 2018 and reached number one in the UK and the top ten in eight other countries. The second single from the album, “ Paradise “, reached number two in the UK , while the next single, “ Shotgun “, reached number one, becoming Ezra’s first chart-topping single in the UK, Ireland and Australia. In February 2019, he won the Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist . Ezra released his third studio album, Gold Rush Kid , in May 2022. Many of the songs he performed to the delighted crowd at the concert.

The concert opened with the boppy country mix of Tiger Lily ensuring that the all-age concert was off to a raucous start.  Surprisingly, there was even a ‘bouncing’ mosh-pit! Definitely something I was not expecting to see in the standing section of the arena. This wholesome, smiley guy is… someone who most girls would be happy to take home to meet their mother; your dad would want to rock out with and your brothers and sisters would want to party with.

George bantered with the audience, told anecdotes and more impressively shared the inspiration for most of his songs. The best and most poingnant one being: whilst on holiday with friends in St Lucia, drinking homemade rum punch, he chatted to passersby asking why there was such a carnival atmosphere in the small village. The villagers responded that three people had recently died and the whole community had come together to celebrate their life with music, food and drink. When you listen to the lyrics of Green, Green Grass , it now takes on a new meaning.  He went on to tell the audience that on the day that he dies, he hopes his fans to have a similar festival to celebrate his life!  He deliberately roused the crowd by stating he was visiting Manchester on the next leg of his tour.  After the boos died down, he went onto say,  ‘i had to start with the best and we all know Liverpool is the best! – endearing him further to the crowd who were never offside in the first place. They took him to their hearts immediately.

Ezra has come a long way since appearing on the Introducing stage at Glastonbury in 2013 and later, supporting Robert Plant at the Glastonbury Extravaganza .In 2014. 2015 built on  Ezra’s success and profile when he was nominated for four Brit Awards : Best British Album, Best British Male Solo Artist, Best British Single, and British Breakthrough Artist.

Ezra is amazing live! He sounds exactly like his songs on the radio. He had no gimmicks, just simple, raw talent. His hard work has paid off and he now claims the ultimate prize of being a revered and respected artist that oozes talent. This combined with his pleasant dispotion makes him an artist that should be catapulted to fame. Catch him on this or the next tour. You won’t be disappointed.

Set List: Tiger Lily, Casio, Get Away, Gold Rush, Pretty Shiny People, Barcelona, A Dark Night, Hold My Girl, Sweetest Human Being, In the Morning, MacMillan, Green Green Grass, Paradise, Blame It On Me.

Encore: Dance All Over Me, Shotgun

George Ezra shares sunny single ‘Green Green Grass’ and announces 2022 tour

The singer-songwriter is bringing his third album 'gold rush kid' to uk and ireland arenas this autumn.

By Tom Skinner

George Ezra has released a new single called ‘Green Green Grass’ and announced a UK/Ireland area tour. The singer-songwriter debuted the uplifting track during his recent comeback show at the London Palladium . In a review of the intimate performance, Rolling Stone UK described the song as a “typically sunny” addition to Ezra ‘s catalogue. As the musician explained to the crowd that night, ‘Green Green Grass’ was inspired by his past travels to warmer climes. It serves as the second preview of Ezra’s third album ‘Gold Rush Kid’ , which comes out June 10 via Columbia Records. Lead single ‘Anyone For You (Tiger Lily)’ arrived in January. “I was on holiday in St Lucia with a few friends at Christmas 2018, with two of my closest mates from home,” Ezra explained of ‘Green Green Grass’ in a statement.

“We were in this beach bar, drinking homemade rum punch and Piton, the local lager, flip-flopping between the two, pissing about with three local guys who worked there. And this music started up, three streets back from the sea.”

He continued: “After about half an hour, I had to go see what it was. And there was a street party going on, with three different sound systems, people cooking in the street. I asked a woman what was going on and she told me it was a funeral – for three people. “They were celebrating three lives! I thought: that is not how we do this at home. And it’s really beautiful.” In the chorus, Ezra sings: “ Green, green grass/ Blue, blue sky/ You better throw a party/ On the day that I die .” This bright side outlook is captured in the single’s summery official lyric video, which finds a shades-donning Ezra driving carefree down a scenic country road. You can watch the clip above. George Ezra has also announced a UK and Ireland arena tour for this autumn – see the full schedule below and find ticket details here . As confirmed previously, Ezra is due to play his biggest show to date at London’s Finsbury Park on July 17. Support will come from Blossoms, Holly Humberstone and more.

July 17 – Finsbury Park, London August 12 – Boardmasters, Cornwall

September 13 – M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool 14 – Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff 16 – The AO Arena, Manchester 20 – Utilita Arena, Newcastle upon Tyne 22 – Utilita Arena, Birmingham 25 – P&J Live, Aberdeen 26 – The OVO Hydro, Glasgow 28 – SSE Arena, Belfast 29 – 3Arena, Dublin

October 1 – Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham 2 – Utilita Arena, Sheffield

Reviewing the singer-songwriter’s one-off London gig earlier this month , Rolling Stone UK wrote: “Ezra’s ability to get the whole crowd dancing proved that he’ll have no trouble doing the same when he plays to 60,000 fans at Finsbury Park this summer. If last night’s performance is anything to go by, it’ll be George providing the sunshine.”

George Ezra cements his spot as a summer superstar in London’s Finsbury Park

george ezra tour 2022 review

The idea of escaping can take many forms, but that idea of a release and comfort away from the world is something we can all connect with. It’s at the core of everything George Ezra does. Whether it’s reflecting on heartbreak, embracing the good times or taking us to pastures new, it’s also what has made him a beloved national treasure. As he headlines Finsbury Park, tonight is confirmation of all that and more – of an artist on the top tier doing it all in a way that makes him feel like the friend next door. The difference here, though, is laid out by the man himself: “I write about escaping, but I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to be right here.”

Up to much on your birthday? For Jules from The Big Moon , there’s the small matter of playing Finsbury Park before Mr Ezra comes later. In what feels like the start of a brand new era, days after the release of their new single ‘Wide Eyes’, their set feels like a wake-up call. Feeling effortlessly natural on a festival Main Stage, they bounce off one another between a cover of ‘Praise You’, ‘Your Light’, and more – it’s bloody wonderful to have The Big Moon back.

george ezra tour 2022 review

From the first note, Holly Humberstone has Finsbury Park in the palm of her hand. Captivating from start to finish, her level of honesty and rawness is compelling. ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ and ‘London Is Lonely’ has the park hushed in appreciation as she showcases the world she’s creating. Boosted on-stage with drummer Loda, Holly is becoming the sort-of artist that unveils another layer with every new release. ‘Scarlett’, ‘Overkill’ and ‘Sleep Tight’ fizz with big time energy, and by the time her set is through, another wave of fans are along for the ride.

george ezra tour 2022 review

Mimi Webb is a surefire crowd pleaser on a day like today. Ranging between anthems that’ll fill radio playlists all day, every day, and raw, epic ballads, her rise to the top isn’t up for debate. A cover of The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber’s ‘Stay’, a triumphant ‘House On Fire’ and breakout ‘Good Without’ are welcomed with open arms – as Mimi Webb shows her star credentials.

george ezra tour 2022 review

With undeniable confidence from Tom Ogden leading the charge, Blossoms ‘ set is a display of how to be a band in 2022 while still doing things in your own distinctive way. With dazzling new album’ Ribbon Around The Bomb’ to hand, Stockport’s finest sons flex their muscles with a festival tour-de-force. There’s everything from electric party starters like ‘I Can’t Stand It’, ‘Your Girlfriend’ and ‘There’s A Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)’ to gorgeous 70s grooves with ‘The Sulking Poet’, ‘The Keeper’, ‘Care For’ and ‘Getaway’. Throw in a dash of ABBA with ‘Oh No (I Think I’m In Love)’, plus the super-sized closer ‘Charlemagne’, and you have a band thriving with creativity. There’s nobody quite like them.

george ezra tour 2022 review

By the time George Ezra takes the stage, Finsbury Park is more than ready. “We’ve been looking forward to this day for so long,” he notes early on, and it’s clear what this show means to him. What follows is the ultimate summer headline performance from the last true bop-and-roller. ‘Anyone For You (Tiger Lily)’, ‘Cassy O”, and latest album title track ‘Gold Rush Kid’ are soaring rock-pop starters to a night that feels more like a night-in with George Ezra as he pours tales and tunes on a crowd eating up every moment. That earnest sense of knowing George is something that connects at the click of a finger – a wordsmith for a modern time that crosses generations with ease.

It’s all about joy and celebration from start to finish. The sun-kissed ‘Pretty Shining People’, ‘Don’t Matter Now’ and ‘Listen To The Man’ are met with mass singalongs and beaming smiles. George Ezra connects with his fans in a way few others can. It’s a life-affirming release led by a songwriter whose dreams have captured the hearts of millions. When he switches things up to the heartstring-pulling ‘Hold My Girl’, ‘Barcelona’ and the practically deafening ‘Budapest’, it’s jaw-dropping. For an hour and a half, nothing else matters. Any thoughts of trouble are wiped away.

But tonight is a party, first and foremost. As he rips through ‘Green Green Grass’, ‘Paradise’ and ‘Blame It On Me’ before rounding out the evening by sending confetti and fireworks into the sky with ‘Shotgun’ – George Ezra cements his spot as a summer superstar. The world still may need that sense of escapism, but tonight is a call to arms for celebrating the here and now.

REVIEW: Fans in paradise as George Ezra declares Aberdeen’s P&J Live his loudest audience so far

Epic show: George Ezra thrills the 10,000 strong crowd at the P&J Live.

With 10,000 backing singers in the audience, it’s no wonder George Ezra looked like he was having the time of his life when he took to the stage at the P&J Live for his first show in Aberdeen.

Looking genuinely taken aback by the deafening sing-a-long filling every corner of the huge arena, the BRIT award-winning, multi-platinum selling musician found himself asking the sell-out audience why he had never performed in the Granite City before.

“It’s fair to say you have been the loudest audience of the tour so far and it’s a Sunday night too – what’s going on?”, Ezra told the sea of fans dancing and singing their hearts out.

10,000 fans

Rocking double denim, his trademark slicked back hair and a huge grin on his face, Ezra appeared on stage to a raucous north-east reception following a 30-minute set by the brilliant South African trio Beatenberg.

Belting out the catchy Anyone for You (Tiger Lily) – released as the first single from his latest album Gold Rush Kid – his distinctive voice sounded even better in real life.

It’s not just Ezra’s voice that is special though as the way he chatted and interacted with the audience was heartwarming.

george ezra tour 2022 review

Compassion for his fans

At one point during the concert he even paused to make sure a fan who had taken unwell was OK.

His kind, caring and loving nature certainly shined through in his goosebump-inducing performances of Hold My Girl, Sweetest Human Being Alive and Barcelona.

george ezra tour 2022 review

Loudest audience so far

Bringing the energy back into the arena with catchy songs such as Pretty Shining People, Paradise, Green Green Grass and Blame It on Me, Ezra beamed as he watched the audience go wild.

But the loudest cheers of the night were reserved for Budapest as 10,000 fans sang the lyrics “Oh for you, ooh, you, ooh, I’d leave it all”.

By the encore, everyone was on their feet as Ezra launched into his most famous hit to date Shotgun.

Somehow I don’t think Ezra will forget Aberdeen in a hurray.

I went to see George Ezra at Birmingham Utilita Arena and the gig felt like a party

You’d have a hard time leaving a George Ezra concert without a grin on your face

  • 14:32, 23 SEP 2022
  • Updated 14:36, 23 SEP 2022

George Ezra performed at Birmingham's Utilita Arena last night

Last night I headed to the Utilita Arena to watch George Ezra and the whole night was completely charming. The Brit award winner and multi-platinum selling artist smiled the entire way through, thanking the audience after each song and stopping the set twice for crowd disturbances.

“Birmingham, you beautiful people, thank you for being here tonight. Belt out the lyrics you know,” he said after singing his first two songs ‘Anyone For You’ and ‘Cassy O’’.

That determination that everyone was going to have a good time lasted all night and was reflected in the high production value of the set and lighting. Many of George Ezra’s songs are based on travel and that was shown in the back screen, which projected sunsets in Manila, the Barcelona sun and a number of maps.

At one point he explained: “It has struck me how much of the second record (‘Staying at Tamara’s) was about escaping and dreaming and getting away. If the second album was written about escaping and dreaming the third album (‘Goldrush Kid’) was the polar opposite.

“It was about being comfortable and happy where you are and tonight there is nowhere else I’d rather be, it’s true.” That, of course, received a huge cheer from the Brummie crowd.

The beginning and end of the gig showcased George Ezra’s bouncy, folky, soul and blues infused pop while a three song interlude saw three of his slower songs, ‘Hold My Girl’, ‘Sweetest Human Alive’ and ‘In the Morning’. Though he loved the audience screaming along to the more popular party songs, it was clearly the singing along to these more stripped songs that meant the most.

At the end of ‘Hold My Girl’, Ezra took a step away from the microphone and smiled into the crowd, patting his heart. He said: “That was beautiful Birmingham, thank you very much.”

The production value was impressive at the George Ezra concert

As the concert continued, George Ezra stopped the show twice to make sure people in the crowd were okay, asking for lights up and for security to head over. This has certainly become the norm since the Astroworld travesty, yet it’s still lovely to see and earned him a clap.

The gig rounded off with three oldies but goldies which had everyone on their feet, ‘Paradise’, ‘Blame It On Me’ and ‘Budapest’, before his forthcoming single ‘Dance All Over Me’ and ‘Shotgun’ for the well received encore. Before singing, he said: “Everywhere that we play this song, we ask the audience to dig deep one more time.”

He needn’t have asked, the audience were up and hungry for the gig to continue as long as possible. George Ezra just has one of those personalities that makes you want to feel every emotion with him.

Each song transported me to a different place, thanks to the explanation preluding so many of them - the funeral street party which inspired ‘Green Green Grass’, the lecture from a friend to embrace the world in ‘Pretty Shining People’, and the relevant cities and countries in ‘Barcelona’, ‘Manila’ and ‘Getaway’.

George Ezra is a professional and a meticulous songwriter, but it's his contagious charm and need for a good time which made the concert what it was.

There are still tickets to see George Ezra on the rest of his UK tour, which you can buy through Ticketmaster .

Green Green Grass … George Ezra: End to End

George Ezra: End to End review – singer-songwriter’s charming cross-Britain hike

After months of isolation and anxious about touring again, Ezra and two friends walk the length of the UK meeting musicians in an uplifting documentary

G eorge Ezra’s reputation as the nicest man in pop emerges intact from this easygoing documentary that follows his 95-day, 1,200 mile walk from Land’s End to John o’Groats. Striding out in box-fresh hiking boots, tent strapped to his rucksack, he’s joined by two old mates from his uni days in Bristol, Adam Scarborough and Christy Tattershall, who direct. (Though we never catch a glimpse of the support vehicle that presumably carried the acoustic guitar and fire pit.)

It’s spring 2021. Ezra is anxious about touring again. After months of isolation, he wants to be back out in the world, but he’s nervous about returning to a punishing schedule. Sitting by a river in West Yorkshire, he tells Scarborough and Tattershall how unwell touring left him before the pandemic, emotionally and mentally drained. He describes breaking down in London on a rare day off, crying his eyes out trying to pull on a sock. Ezra is very good on mental health. Still, you won’t learn much about his private life here; he manages to be open about his struggles while guarding his privacy, no mean feat.

The best scenes are in places meaningful to him. Tent pitched on Glastonbury’s Worthy Farm, he talks about watching the festival every year on TV as a kid: “Even getting a ticket felt impossible.” In Bristol, where he dropped out of college, he looks wistfully at an old poster of his younger self in a pub: “I look like a baby.” There are some performances by other musicians along the route that feel a bit tacked on. Much nicer are the campfire singalongs.

It’s impossible not to be charmed by Ezra. He may be one of the most successful singer-songwriters in recent years, but if he’s got an ego, it clearly doesn’t need feeding that often. He’s positive, sunny and upbeat – even in a swirl of midges in the Highlands. He’s unlikely to get offers to present a travel show on the back of his commentary here: “Waterfalls are amazing!” But, to be fair, most of us can identify with failing to find the words to match the spectacle of a natural wonder.

DEBUTS NEW SINGLE  ‘GREEN GREEN GRASS’  THE SECOND SONG TO BE TAKEN FROM NEW ALBUM  GOLD RUSH KID , DUE 10TH JUNE  ANNOUNCES FULL U.K. ARENA TOUR, TO FOLLOW BIGGEST EVER HEADLINE SHOW AT LONDON’S FINSBURY PARK

– The Times “its arena-friendly chorus already sounds like classic Ezra” – DIY “a sugar-sweet pop banger that’ll catapult his ascent even higher,” “another insatiable earworm” – The Guardian

BRIT Award-winning, multi-platinum selling musician George Ezra today debuts his hugely infectious new single ‘ Green Green Grass ,’ the second song to be lifted from his forthcoming new album Gold Rush Kid , due for release on 10 June via Columbia Records . The single arrives alongside the announcement of a huge nationwide UK arena tour , scheduled for September and October, following George’s special show at London’s Finsbury Park in July.

Pre-order / pre-save Gold Rush Kid

‘Green Green Grass’ is an irresistibly joyful song about making the best of things, even when it might feel like the worst of things are afoot: “Green green grass, blue blue sky, you better throw a party on the day that I die.”   “I was on holiday in St Lucia with a few friends at Christmas 2018, with two of my closest mates from home,” explains George. “We were in this beach bar, drinking homemade rum punch and Piton, the local lager, flip-flopping between the two, pissing about with three local guys who worked there. And this music started up, three streets back from the sea.   “After about half an hour, I had to go see what it was. And there was a street party going on, with three different sound systems, people cooking in the street. I asked a woman what was going on and she told me it was a funeral – for three people. They were celebrating three lives! I thought: that is not how we do this at home. And it’s really beautiful.”   ‘Green Green Grass’ follows the euphoric first single and album opener ‘ Anyone For You ,’ which continues to climb the UK Official Singles Chart and is the number one song at UK radio, with A-list rotation across all major stations.   George debuted both songs to a rapturous reception at his recent intimate gigs in London, Manchester and Edinburgh – shows praised as “a joyous singalong that was impossible to resist” (5*, The Telegraph), “blazing sunshine tempered by subtle shadow” (4*, Evening Standard) and a set filled with “hooks so plentiful he could go long-line fishing with them” (4*, The Guardian).

“The Gold Rush Kid? That’s me,” says George, reflecting on the title of his third record – a 12-strong suite of marvellous, transporting, elevational songs, that more than anything “sound like me. That’s what ties them together.”   After two blockbuster albums – Wanted On Voyage (2014) and Staying At Tamara’s (2018), both of which reached number 1 in the UK and sold millions around the world, and the latter of which earned him his first number 1 single in ‘Shotgun’ and won him the 2019 Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist – it was time to return to heart and hearth, with an album written and produced entirely in London with longstanding collaborator Joel Pott.

Alongside the tour announcement, George has partnered with YouTube Music to be their Sustainability Partner for 2022. He says: “I am conscious that creating, touring and promoting a record has an impact on the environment, so I am delighted to announce I will be working with YouTube Music as their Sustainability Partner for 2022. They have very generously provided a significant financial contribution to support a cause of my choosing; this is going to be The National Trust, who are working hard to reverse the decline in nature and reduce the impact of climate change by planting trees and restoring landscapes. Together, we’ll directly use this money to plant 17,000 trees across the UK.”   The National Trust has committed to planting or establishing 20 million trees covering an area the size of Birmingham as part of their plan to become net zero by 2030. The carbon benefits from the 17,000 trees will go towards the charity’s own net zero ambitions.   National Trust Director General Hilary McGrady said: “We are enormously grateful to George for this donation, and it serves as an important reminder that only by a collective will and everyone playing their part will we help reverse some of the impacts of climate change and help the nation to reach net zero.   “This gift represents an important step as part of our ambition to try and tackle the effects of climate change. We are planting the trees in the right places to maximise the impact they will have in locking in carbon.” YouTube Music is a music app made for music listening, on top of the magic of YouTube: making the world of music easier to explore and more personalised than ever. Whether you want to listen, watch or discover – all the ways music moves you can be found in one place – not just music videos, but official albums, singles, remixes, live performances, covers and hard-to-find music you can only get on YouTube.

George Ezra says he may step away from the limelight at the end of his current tour

"I think I’ll always write and record music, I just don’t know if it’ll be as commercial"

george ezra

George Ezra has said in a new interview that he is considering stepping away from the limelight following the conclusion of his current tour.

The singer/songwriter is touring in support of his third studio album ‘Gold Rush Kid’ , having already played a huge headline show in London’s Finsbury Park this summer as well as a surprise set at this year’s Glastonbury .

Ezra has now spoken in a new interview with The Daily Telegraph  about his potential next move following the conclusion of his ‘Gold Rush Kid’ tour, which is due to wrap up at the end of the 2023 summer festival season.

“This might be a conversation for another time, but I don’t feel an urge or want to continue operating in the way we do at the minute,” he said. “And that’s not a rebellion, it’s just how I feel. Like, ‘Cool, that was a thing.’

“The last [headline tour] date lands around April next year. Then it’s festival season, then it’s my 30th, and you think, ‘Well, what an amazing decade. But don’t kid yourself into thinking that’s all life could be.'”

George Ezra

Asked about what he might do instead, Ezra replied: “Well I don’t know, and that’s OK. I think I’ll always write and record music, I just don’t know if it’ll be as commercial. Or maybe it will be but I won’t promote it much.”

Recommended

Ezra, pressed on whether he would miss playing live in front of his fans should he stop touring in the future, added: “Again, I feel so detached from it. It’s very hard to get your head around the fact it would be aimed at you.

“The memories people have with [his] songs have very little to do with [me], they’re with friends, family, holidays, kitchen discos.”

Ezra’s new documentary End To End , which documents his 1,200-mile walk across the UK in 2021, is set to be screened in UK and Ireland cinemas later this month.
