Cruise Control Retrofit

Porsche cruise control retrofit.

You may ask “why fit cruise control to my Porsche?” Well a cruise control retrofit is becoming one of the more frequent upgrade enquiries we receive from Porsche owners.

It has never been a more beneficial upgrade than it is today, with a more stringent approach to the enforcement of speed restrictions and an ever-growing network of smart motorways. These motorway systems operate a variable speed limit designed to ease congestion, but combined with the average speed limits imposed mainly through roadworks, can become a little distractive.

While we all understand the safety reasons behind these speed regulations, they can become quite arduous and distractive, with drivers sometimes spending more time watching their speedo than the road ahead.

This is why a Porsche cruise control upgrade can be such an attractive addition to any Porsche owner. Cruise control provides a simple electronic solution to maintaining a constant speed, with just a simple adjustment on a steering column stalk, it allows you to set a desired speed and maintain this through any restriction.

Cruise control not only allows you to focus more on your surroundings and the road ahead, but it has also been claimed to reduce driver fatigue and increase fuel economy.

At RPM our Porsche technicians are experienced in the correct installation of retrofit cruise control. We offer this service to a wide range of Porsche models and only use genuine Porsche control stalks.

Cruise control cable for Porsche 996 and 986

Retrofitting of cruise control to the 9x6 series of cars is a popular modification. Fitting is well documented on a number of websites.

The pictured cables we sell were developed as a solution to this retrofit - to make it easier to identify where to put the connections.

They have proved popular with both vehicle owners and independent specialists who perform this retrofit.

There are two cables - the longer one which fits  earlier vehicles, and the shorter one fitted to the face-lifted vehicles.

This retrofit will not work on very early vehicles without electronic throttle control.

Identifying which cable your vehicle needs is usually fairly straightforward, unless it was built/purchased at or around the time of the facelift period (2001 - 996, 2003 - 986).

Generally, the face-lifted vehicle utilises the shorter cable.

To be sure we advise checking your vehicles wiring diagram which will indicate the necessary connections, as there are variations.

Wiring connections for cruise control are slightly more complex than for the OBC, but are still within the capabilities of the home mechanic.

The connections reproduced here are a guideline only - you should check what is correct for your car.

Some websites do not provide all the necessary wiring info. Or do not cater for the introduction of the later cluster type in approx 2000 for the 986. This does not generally need the additional connection from the instrument cluster to the DME (These clusters are identified by green, blue, grey connectors).

Please note - the date of vehicle registration can differ from the date of manufacture.

Connections

986 2000-2002, 996 C2 2000-2001/2, 996 C4 1999-2001/2

Cruise stalk Pin 1 - DME connector IV pin 27

Cruise stalk Pin 2 - Fuse B7

Cruise stalk Pin 3 - DME connector IV pin 25

Cruise stalk Pin 4 - DME connector IV pin 19

Instrument cluster connection Pin 16 or 17 (depending on model) to Pin 18 DME - There are a few possibilities, so research your vehicles wiring first.

On 986 cars with the later cluster with grey, green, and blue connectors (approx 200 on) this connection is not usually necessary as the CAN BUS controls the indicator light. But on the earlier vehicles  the cruise control indicator light is turned on by this wire.

There are a number of possibilities as per below, which were simplified by the introduction of the facelift models.

986 up to 2000 - Cluster with Blue, White, and Black connectors - Use blue connector pin 16 for non 'S' or black connector pin 17 for 'S')

996 Instrument Cluster with Blue, White, and Black connectors - use blue connector pin 16

DME connector IV pin 18 - The other end of this wire forms the Instrument cluster connection which causes the green cruise control lamp to illuminate.

986 - 2003 to 2004, facelift 996

Cruise stalk Pin 1 - Instrument cluster  Grey connector pin 17

Cruise stalk Pin 3 - Instrument cluster  Grey connector pin 4

Cruise stalk Pin 4 - Instrument cluster  Grey connector pin 1

Once your vehicle has had the hardware retrofitted it needs the cruise control option coded to the car.

The process varies slightly according to model and year, but is generally accomplished by adding the extra option to the DME and Instrument cluster via PIWIS, PST2 or Durametric Pro.

We can, when time allows, perform the fitting at a very reasonable cost, it takes around 2-3 hours provided there are no underlying problems which prevent the cruise control from working such as the clutch or brake switch.

Note - To prevent the airbag warning lamp from illuminating, the battery should not be connected when the airbag is disconnected.

Porsche cruise control retrofit cable

Cruise control retrofit cable designed for later (03-04) models where speed is controlled by the instrument cluster.

Porsche cruise control retrofit cable

Cruise control retrofit cable for earlier 986, 996 models where speed is controlled by the DME at the rear of the car and the vehicle is fitted with electronic throttle control.

Sorry about the repeated section in post #4 - I don't seem to be able to edit the post any more and correct that. Can a moderator help me out here and remove the duplicated section?

topradio

Well that's the most comprehensive write up I think that I've seen, it must have taken a while to do. I did the cruise mod to my car (non e-gas) a few years ago and like you I made up the looms with fabric tape and soldered / heat shrink the joints. Like yours, I think you would have to look carefully to see that it wasn't done in the factory.

mike597

great write up!

RickLS7

Excellent guide, better than any I have seen on other sites..

I added cruise & OBC to mine a couple of years ago, the facelift cars are so much easier, you just have to remove the steering wheel and instrument cluster on those.

Thanks for the kind comments. It's my first how-to guide and came out a bit longer than I expected but hopefully someone will find it useful in the future.

In the coming weeks, I'll be doing a 996 instrument cluster upgrade. I've ordered a suitable instrument cluster from eBay, I just need to read up on the coding process. I'll write up a how-to for that as well assuming there isn't already one here on the forum (I'll have a look in a bit).

I'm also designing and building a one-touch roof control (similar in function to the SmartTop) which I'll publish the design for once I've confirmed it's all working. If you know how to work a soldering iron, it should be possible to make one for about £30~£40.

Jon - I have done the cluster upgrade. I used my original one and added the two outer gauges, that way I kept the correct mileage and embedded VIN, its also said that there can be a problem with the fuel tank calibration depending upon the donor cluster, and as mine is a 2.5 the red line would have been in the wrong place as well.

All I had to do was read the EEPROM, edit one field in the HEX table (to enable the voltage gauge) and blow the data back in.

I was going to make my own smart top using two latching relays or possibly a 555 timer but never got around to it.

BestGear

Great write up... thanks for taking all the time to compile it.

mavis.d

That was a great write up, bet the post took longer that the job it's self! I have had mine coded for OBC and cruise as I have neither. Your post has only re-enforced my opinion that it should crack on as soon as I'm back from my holls. I had already decided to buy a new unit from OPC due to the lack of units for sale and the high price, for not much more I'd rather have a new unit.

Great anyway well done

:blush2:

I'd certainly recommend it the mod. Depending on the year of your car, there may be slight differences to the procedure but none of it's rocket science.

danch

What did you use to enable the obc& cruise control ?, did you use company or have you PIWIS/PST2 ?

OBC was factory fit on my car and the cruise I enabled with a PST2 I bought from a forum member recently. From what I've read, many indies will do the coding via PST2/PIWIS for a minimal fee. If you're local to the Abbots Langley/St Albans area, I'd be happy to help out if you're doing a similar upgrade.

My specialist coded mine for free when I took it on for a service.

I bought a Durametric cable recently so would be able to do it myself if not done already.

;)

starline250

I think you'll find the Durametric professional version can code the cluster.

The latest enthusiast cable can do limited coding, think it's just OBC and cruise.

The cable was a real disappointment, my car didn't have any engine, alarm, air bag or air con fault codes in memory.

I shouldn't complain!

  • 1 month later...

Fitted cruise and obc yesterday and your guide was a great help especially the bit below as mine did not need the connection, I had run the cable just incase. Everything worked as it should first go. Next time I'm down at drago.d's, Kings Langley I'll buy you a beer it's the least you deserve.

NB: Having spoken to Richard Hamilton about some of the wiring, it appears the information on the Pelican Parts website (and their book) may actually be incorrect. It would seem that only MY2000 cars need the connection between the DME and instrument cluster (to light the bulb on the dash); MY2001 and onwards use the CANbus system to communicate with the instrument cluster and illuminate the cruise bulb. If you connect the DME to the instrument cluster on a MY2001 or later car, you'll probably blow the cruise circuitry in the DME. Be warned! :-)

David, you're very welcome - I'm glad it all worked out for you.

Last weekend I managed to complete my installation of a 996 instrument cluster as well so I'll be doing a write up of that too.

Very interested in that one, how did it go? Hope it didn't affect your newly installed cruise and obc

Cruise control retrofit

  • Joe Boxster
  • Jan 27th 2022

is it possible to retrofit cruise control on the 2000 986?

And if so, what do you need for it?

This post has been automatically translated.

Hallo Joe Boxster, Schau mal hier: Cruise control retrofit [advertisement] Dort wird jeder fündig! :-)

If your Boxster already has E-Gas the retrofit is easy, connect the steering column switch with 4 levers and 4 cables in the right place, then unlock with the PIWIS and it runs.

I can't help you with the older ones with throttle cable.

  • Jan 29th 2022

There are also very good solutions for throttle cables.

I already had.

Thanks for the info. I don't know if it has e-gas, it's a 2000 model. I would guess that it does, but will check with my garage.

Step on the gas pedal and let it flip.

If it has a pull, you'll hear it clacking in the engine compartment.

Or just open the hatch and you'll see it.

Quote from Joe Boxster Whether he has E-gas, I do not know, is a 2000 model.

Then it should have E-Gas if it is a 2000 model year according to FIN.

E-gas came to the MJ 2000, so built from about autumn 1999.

If eGas, then you can find instructions at the 996 where exactly the 4 cables have to be connected.

  • Jan 30th 2022

Thanks for the info. When I step on the gas pedal and let go, I hear nothing. Then I'll have a look at the 996er.

  • Jan 31st 2022

I also have a question.

I have retrofitted the trip computer and the cruise control on a 2003 BoxsterS with Tiptronic.

After I entered the order type (order code) with a Piwis 2 in the DME, I was able to get into the coding of the instrument cluster.

I could activate the on-board computer without any problems.

However, there is no entry for the tempostat in the instrument cluster.

Only in the DME I could recode to tempstat installed.

My instrument cluster is the one with the segment display. Unfortunately not the dot matrix version. The LED for the tempstat is installed in the instrument cluster. I opened the instrument and looked.

On the BoxsterS in the warning light row on the far right.

Can someone help me?

ACC/PAS Successful Retrofit - Complete Guide

  • Add to quote
  • you need basic cruise for this retrofit. If you don't have any cruise at all, it's still doable, but you will need to obtain a cruise control activation code from Porsche.
  • you need LKA (lane keep assisted steering) for this retrofit. If you don't have it, you likely don't have the camera under the windshield, which means you will also need to retrofit the camera and replace your windshield.
  • as far as I know, this guide applies to all cars 2014-2018 (first gen)
  • Distronic Radar Eye to mount into the front bumper, part number 95B.907.567.B (I was told that it must end up in a B otherwise it might not work. Cannot confirm this). It's a lot cheaper if you buy it used, and try to buy with all 3 legs - this might save you money on calibration later.
  • New steering column switch that includes the ACC lever
  • Mounting pad and covers for the radar (I will include a photo with part numbers)
  • 3 plastic pieces to mount radar (not sold separately by the dealer, you can buy them on ali/ebay from new Honda Accord, they are commonly available and identical)
  • Bumper grille with the cutout for the radar. Or just cut it out yourself like I did.
  • Wiring to connect the radar. You cannot buy this from the dealer, but the quality of the one I got from aliexpress is actually very good and I can recommend it. Link
  • Extra canbus wire, 5m. Orange/brown and orange/blue colors are ideal, but it really doesn't matter. Link

You did an outstanding job right there, well done. Just curious, how did you work out the modules to code with PIWIS for 8T3?

It's research, trial and error. One alternative way to code in a new feature is to change it in Additional Menu > Vehicle Maintenance, then select all modules in Overview and auto code. This should also work, but it didn't quite work for me as I was seeing some odd coding errors in a couple of modules and spent a lot of time trying to figure out what they are. To figure out the modules for any given option, you can also manually go to each module's Coding tab > Manual > See if the option exists in the module. It's a bit tedious, but the most reliable way to find out.

Can anyone confirm this works on 95B.2 models? (2020)

  • Macan Electric Reviews

2024 Porsche Macan Electric First Drive Review: The revolution begins

But it's not over yet. original macan will live on alongside rapid all-electric one.

retrofit cruise control porsche 996

NICE, France — We expect evolutionary changes when a new Porsche comes out; the new Panamera is more of an update of its predecessor than a fresh start, for example. Unveiled earlier this year, the second-generation, 2024 Porsche Macan defies this trend. It all starts under the hood: There’s a frunk there instead of an engine.

Porsche made the new Macan all electric, all the time. It’s based on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that Porsche designed jointly with sister company Audi specifically to underpin EVs, so don’t expect V6 or even plug-in hybrids . Instead, the gas-powered, first-generation Macan will live on indefinitely alongside the new Macan Electric (its official name to differentiate it), but that’s a short-term hedge. Even though the existing Macan represented about 35% of Porsche’s sales in the United States with 26,947 units sold, it’s a 10-year-old car pegged in one of the market’s most competitive segments. So, while the gas-powered Macan hasn't been discontinued yet, there’s a clock ticking. For Porsche, there’s no going back and it’s certainly a risky bet.

At launch, buyers will have a choice of two versions called Macan 4 and Macan Turbo, respectively. Both are built on a 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack located under the cabin, and both offer through-the-road all-wheel-drive from a pair of electric motors (one per axle). The 4 develops 382 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque while the Turbo gets 576 horsepower and a massive 811 pound-feet of torque. There’s a Launch Control function that bumps horsepower to 402 and 630, respectively. Impressive? Hell, yes! Hitting 60 mph from a stop takes 4.9 seconds in the 4 and 3.1 seconds in the Turbo. That’s in spite of a curb weight of 5,247 pounds (Macan 4) and 5,393 pounds (Macan Turbo). For context, the V8-powered Ford F-150 Tremor weighs about 4,900 pounds.

Driving range figures won’t be announced until the EPA puts the new Macan through its paces. We do know that the 800-volt electrical system unlocks fast-charging at up to 270 kilowatts, which is incredibly fast considering most luxury EVs charge in the 150-200-kW range.

Back to the platform: “Developed jointly” isn’t synonymous with “borrowed from.” Porsche and Audi worked together on the PPE architecture, and there are several Macan-specific parts.

“The two-valve dampers, the available rear-wheel steering system, and the way the Turbo’s motor is mounted on the rear axle are some of the Porsche-specific bits,” said Dr. Robert Meier, the Macan line’s manager.

The view from the driver’s seat is familiar if you’ve spent time in other recent additions to the range, like the new Cayenne . There’s a start button on the left side of the steering wheel, a little razor-like shifter on the right side of the steering wheel, and a 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster right behind it. The screen doesn’t have a binnacle, so you’ll have to find another surface to use as a snare if you want to drum along to the music in traffic, but it’s easy to read regardless of lighting conditions. You’d think that glare would make this setup a serious pain in the trunk lid; that’s not the case, thankfully.

If you wanted to add more screens to the dashboard, you wouldn’t know where to put them. There’s a 10.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system in the middle, and you can pay extra to get a second 10.9-inch touchscreen in the part of the dashboard that faces the front passenger. You can’t see what’s shown on the passenger-side touchscreen while driving; you can’t even tell that it’s there.

Power on the Macan, flick the shifter out of park, and you’re off in complete silence. You can enable a UFO-like acceleration noise via the main touchscreen, but without it, the cabin is remarkably quiet. That’s easier said than done in an EV, because the engine’s symphony isn’t there to cover up the various squeaks and rattles. Acceleration is smooth and linear, and the 4 has plenty of power.

Every member of the Macan Electric range comes with an air suspension system on both axles, and my test car was equipped with the optional rear-wheel steering system. The old Macan (outgoing isn’t the right term here, since it’s still going) isn’t available with either. The air suspension system does a good job of evening out bumps in the road and keeping body roll in check during cornering, but it’s the four-wheel steering that really works wonders. It helps the Macan take a bend like a smaller car by turning the rear wheels up to 5 degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels at lower speeds. You can feel it and you can see it. It’s not tech for the sake of tech; it makes a big difference.

This handling capability is ultimately what sets the Macan apart, because in terms of acceleration it drives like any of the other EVs that boast the kind of horsepower you’d have expected from a supercar 15 years ago. Perhaps this is a question of habit or preference, but when driven spiritedly (which it really should be from time to time; it’s a Porsche, after all) it’s not quite as exciting as the original model.

While the “4” stands for “four driven wheels,” the Macan 4 isn’t always all-wheel-drive. It’s mostly rear-wheel-drive, because the front axle is usually in sleep mode to save energy. It joins the party “when extra stability is needed or under heavy acceleration,” Meier told me. This happens behind the scenes. From behind the wheel, you can’t tell whether the front axle is zapping the front wheels.

retrofit cruise control porsche 996

My first impression of the Macan Turbo is that it’s overkill. Not in a bad way; it’s the exact opposite. It’s overkill in the same way that a 911 Turbo is overkill compared to, say, a 911 GTS. There’s no need to have this much power under your right foot, but, damn, it’s a lot of fun and you’re glad it’s there. The power gap that separates the Turbo from the 4 comes from a bigger motor on the rear axle. It’s mounted a little further back than the 4’s motor to shift the front-rear weight distribution from 50-50 to 48-52. The 2% difference isn’t perceptible, but the trim-specific torque vectoring system helps the Turbo pivot around a turn with more precision than a heavy SUV has any right to show off.

One advantage of electric drivetrains is the instant torque, and when you’ve got this much of it to play with (remember: 811 pound-feet!) it’s almost brutal. Mash the accelerator pedal and you might as well be on the downhill part of a high-speed ride at an amusement park. It keeps going, and going … and going. There’s no lag and no interruption in the power flow. It embarrasses sports cars .

Mash the other pedal, and the Turbo stops almost as quickly as it accelerates thanks in part to six-piston front calipers (the 4 ships with four-piston front calipers). The brake pedal is a nice surprise: It doesn’t feel like a button on a Nintendo 64 controller, which is the case in many EVs and plug-in hybrid models. And yet, there’s up to 240 kilowatts of regeneration quietly slowing down the Macan.

“More than 90% of the time, when you push the brake pedal you only brake by regen,” Meier explained. “There’s no friction braking. The brakes only come into play when you really push it extremely hard. Even in ABS situations, we still use as much regen as possible before using the friction brakes.”

You don’t feel the regen while driving; the Macan coasts when you lift your foot off the accelerator. You can dial in a little bit of regen resistance by flicking a digital switch found in one of the touchscreen’s “settings” menus, but one-pedal driving, where you almost never need to step on the brake pedal, isn’t possible. Want to slow down? That’s what the brake pedal is for, Porsche argues.

retrofit cruise control porsche 996

One issue with the new Macan is visibility. The thick A-pillars block the driver’s view on either side, and the field of view out of the rear window is small. It gets even smaller when the speed-activated rear spoiler pops up. The new Macan would be a good candidate for a camera-based mirror system.

The trade-off of that visibility and the tapered rear end that causes it is a 0.25 drag coefficient, so the new Macan is considerably more aerodynamic than its predecessor, which had a 0.35 drag coefficient. Less wind resistance equals more range; Meier said his team’s simulations suggest that the Macan would lose about 52 miles of driving range if it had the original Macan’s drag coefficient. It rides on a longer wheelbase that clears up more interior space, and it benefits from more trunk space even before the frunk enters the equation. Porsche achieved this without super-sizing its smallest crossover . The new model stretches about 188 inches long, 76 inches wide, and 64 inches tall, so its footprint is almost exactly the same size as the first Macan's.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or realistically in the eye of the dude signing the check, so I’m not here to tell you whether or not the new Macan looks good. One interesting detail worth pointing out is that the lights located in the middle of the hood-bumper-fender junction aren’t the headlights; they’re the daytime running lights. The headlights are lower and integrated into the bumper.

retrofit cruise control porsche 996

Pricing for the 2024 Macan 4 starts at $78,800 not counting destination, which hasn’t been published yet, and the Turbo model carries a base price of $105,300. That’s one of the more unfortunate side effects of going electric: You get a Macan that costs as much as a Cayenne . The base 2024 Cayenne starts at $80,850 including a $1,650 destination charge, and the base last-gen Macan costs $64,895.

At least both models are relatively well equipped. The entry-level 4 comes standard with an air suspension system, 20-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, a heated steering wheel, and adaptive cruise control. Get the Turbo and the list of standard features grows with trim-specific accents inside and out, LED Matrix-design headlights, carbon fiber interior trim, 18-way power-adjustable adaptive front sport seats, a surround-view camera, and a Bose surround-sound system. Options include a head-up display, a rear-wheel steering system, and the passenger touchscreen

Porsche’s rare instances of revolutionary changes have always been met with skepticism from a slice of its customer base – look up “996-generation 911” for an example. Making the new Macan electric will spark similar debates. It’s a great SUV, but it wouldn’t be any worse with a V6 instead of a frunk.

Electrification might alienate some buyers, but it should also lure new customers into Porsche stores, and the Macan has always been a conquest model. Meanwhile, drivers who want a Macan but don’t want an EV will settle for the old one. Grab the popcorn: This will be an interesting duel to watch.

Hi, Just picked up a 997.2 C4. Exact spec I wanted but is missing the cruise control. Anyone had this retrofitted? At what cost fron Porsche? Or any cheaper alternatives? Mine is PDK with sport paddle steering wheel. many thanks Rhys

I had cruise retrofitted to a 997.1 and, more recently, to a 991. A Porsche dealer or Indy can do it easily. The cost is likely to be circa £400.

I looked in to this on my Cayman, I was told that the wiring is already there as part of the existing loom the money is spent on the 'Cruise Control lever' and the 'new steering column cover' with the hole for said lever, then it just needs plugging into a computer and ticking the 'Cruise Control fitted' box. However, not sure how true this was as it was still around £500 which seemed a lot. I have it on my new car and it is worth getting as it stops you creeping up to silly speeds when cruising on the motorways.

I have done this upgrade. Purchased a 4 stalk unit from eBay and removed cruise control switch, fitted to my existing unit wiring is already installed. You need the bottom plastic cover from the 4 stalk for the cutouts. Had the unit coded to the car at a local Indy £40. Sold the 3 stalk unit on eBay for £10 more than I payed for the 4 stalk (lucky I realise) so total cost £30. Fitting was quite strait forward and well within the capabilities of a competent home mechanic. Hope this helps
