18 Top Things to Do in Gauteng, South Africa

gauteng tourist attractions

Located in the highveld region of northeast South Africa , Gauteng is both the smallest and the most populous of the country’s nine provinces. It takes its name from the Sotho-Tswana phrase meaning ‘Place of Gold’, inspired by the gold industry upon which its largest city, Johannesburg , was founded. Most visitors to South Africa will fly in and out of Joburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport , but here's why you should extend your stay in Gauteng—ranging from apartheid and gold rush landmarks to the booming modern culture of townships like Soweto.

Discover South African History at the Apartheid Museum

Raymond June/ Flickr.com/CC BY-ND 2.0

To understand South Africa’s complex society, one needs to learn about apartheid, the period of state-sanctioned racism that lasted from 1948 to 1994. The best place to start is at Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum , which uses artifacts, photographs, film footage, and information panels to illustrate what life was like for South Africans of all colors during that time. You’ll learn about the establishment of Black homelands; and the increasingly violent campaigns of the ANC. The museum is part of Gold Reef City and costs 100 rand ($6.71) for adults, 85 rand ($5.70) for children.

Continue Your Apartheid Education at Constitution Hill

South Africa’s journey from apartheid to democracy is also documented at Constitution Hill , the former prison that now houses the South African Constitutional Court. During the apartheid era, many famous political prisoners were incarcerated here, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. Learn about their experience (and that of the other prisoners who lived here during Constitution Hill’s 100-year history) with a tour of the site’s three different museums. The precinct is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with final tours departing at 4 p.m.

See Where Nelson Mandela Lived on Vilakazi Street

AlejandroRosa/Getty Images

Perhaps the most significant of Joburg's Mandela landmarks is the former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner's house on the corner of Vilakazi Street in Soweto. Mandela lived here during his formative years while founding South Africa's first Black law firm and the ANC Youth League. He also returned here briefly after being released from prison in 1990 after 27 years behind bars. Now a public heritage site, the house, and its simple displays give an insight into the humble origins of the iconic leader. Entry costs 60 rand (about $4) per adult.

Explore the Many Different Sides of Soweto

Masego Morulane/Getty Images

As the largest informal settlement or township in South Africa, Soweto is a place of extremes. On the one hand, it is a place of abject poverty with a history blighted by tragic events like the Soweto uprising of 1976. On the other, it is a place of renewal, where African artists and entrepreneurs are building successful new businesses that range from craft breweries to theaters . The best (and safest) way to explore Soweto’s rich history and burgeoning modern culture is to join a tour with a trusted local company like Soweto Guided Tours .

Enjoy a Fun Family Day Out at Gold Reef City

Subodh Agnihotri/Getty Images

Families flock to Joburg’s Gold Reef City amusement park, which boasts 18 thrill rides and 13 rides, especially for smaller children. When you’ve had enough of the rollercoasters, there’s plenty more to explore within the same complex, including a bowling alley, cinema, and a casino for the grown-ups. An underground mine tour transports you back to the days of the Witwatersrand Gold Rush on which the city was founded, while two family-friendly hotels give you the perfect excuse to stay overnight. The theme park is located in the Ormonde suburb.

Shop 'til You Drop in Johannesburg

THEGIFT777/Getty Images

Johannesburg is one of the country’s best retail destinations with something for every kind of shopper. For high street fashions, head to trendy Sandton City Mall . For an eclectic blend of boutique stores and independent restaurants, try 44 Stanley or 27 Boxes; then, stock up on traditional African crafts at Rosebank Art & Craft Market . Maboneng’s weekly Market on Main is an atmospheric choice for locally produced food, fashion, and homeware. Many of South Africa’s top commercial art galleries are also located in Joburg, including Everard Read and the Goodman Gallery.

Experience Jozi’s Vibrant Theater and Music Scenes

For culture vultures, Johannesburg is just as rewarding. Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein is home to the Joburg Ballet and also hosts touring West End and Broadway musicals. Newtown’s award-winning Market Theatre has a reputation for inclusivity and specializes in South African plays. Music lovers will find concert venues all over the city and its surrounding area, but two of the most famous include Lyric Theatre (part of Gold Reef City) and Big Top Arena , both of which regularly host major international artists. The latter is located in nearby Brakpan.

Go Behind the Scenes at a Top Gauteng Stadium

BFG Images/Getty Images

Gauteng is home to some of South Africa’s most iconic sports stadiums. Ellis Park Stadium (now known as Emirates Airline Park ) is famous as the location of the country’s 1995 Rugby World Cup victory and continues to host major rugby and soccer matches. FNB Stadium , also in Johannesburg, hosted the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and is the largest venue in the country for international sporting events. Both stadiums offer amazing guided tours that will take you onto the pitch and into the players’ tunnel and changing rooms.

Take a Tour of Pretoria’s Monuments and Museums

Henrique NDR Martins/Getty Images

Johannesburg often steals the limelight from Pretoria, but the country’s administrative capital is well worth a visit for its many historical and cultural landmarks. Enjoy a picnic in the terraced gardens of the neo-classical Union Buildings , home of South Africa’s national government. At Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum , the 2,286-feet Wall of Names commemorates South Africans who lost their lives in the fight for a free democracy. At the same time, the visually impressive Voortrekker Monument is a must-visit for anyone interested in the pioneer history of the Afrikaners.

See the Capital in Bloom During Jacaranda Season

Frans Lemmens/Getty Images

Blooming jacaranda trees are a harbinger of summer in many South African cities, but nowhere are the pale indigo blossoms more plentiful and beautiful than in Pretoria. Nicknamed the Jacaranda City , the capital’s streets are planted with between 40,000 and 70,000 of these exotic trees, which were initially imported from Argentina. Some of the oldest jacarandas are found around Bosman and Cilliers Streets, while the residential suburb of Groenkloof boasts a display of rare white jacarandas on Herbert Baker Street. Jacaranda season lasts from October to November every year.

Reconnect with Nature at Walter Sisulu Gardens

Jeremy Woodhouse/Getty Images

In a province dominated by its urban areas, Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden near Roodepoort has been voted as Gauteng’s best place to get back to nature for nine consecutive years. The garden showcases the natural highveld landscape with a variety of habitats, including densely forested ravines and open grassland. There are more than 600 naturally occurring plant species and a wide range of small mammals. Entry costs 55 rand ($3.69) per adult, and facilities include a restaurant, walking trails, and bird hides.

Spend a Day (or Two) on Klipkraal Hiking Trail

Alistair Berg/Getty Images

For a complete escape from city life, plan an outing on the Klipkraal Hiking Trail near Heidelberg in southern Gauteng. There are two-day hiking routes: the Panorama Trail (8 miles) and the Kraal Trail (6.5 miles), which can be combined for an overnight adventure with accommodation in one of the trail’s cozy lake houses. Expect beautiful highveld and grassland scenery, abundant bird and butterfly sightings, and occasional views of distant Vaal Dam. Only 30 hikers are allowed on the trail at one time, so booking in advance is advisable.

Visit the Legendary Cullinan Diamond Mine

DiamondGalaxy/Getty Images

Located 30 minutes east of Pretoria, Cullinan Diamond Mine is the third-richest diamond mine in South Africa and the world’s most important source of rare blue diamonds. Above all, the mine is famous for having produced the largest rough gem diamond ever found. The Cullinan Diamond was discovered in 1905 at 3,106 carats and is now part of the British Crown Jewels. Guided tours give you the chance to see replicas of the Cullinan Diamond and other famous stones and to view the big hole, engine room, and hoisting shafts.

Walk in the Footsteps of Our Ancestors at Sterkfontein Caves

Mark Harris/Getty Images

The Sterkfontein Caves in western Gauteng are famous for the fossils paleontologists have found there. These include Little Foot, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that dates back more than three million years. This find and others from the Cradle of Humankind have been instrumental in improving our understanding of how our hominid ancestors evolved to become modern man. Cave tours take visitors deep underground while many of the artifacts uncovered at the site can be seen on display at the nearby Maropeng Visitor Centre . Combination tickets cost 190 rand ($12.74) per adult.

Go on Safari in Rietvlei Nature Reserve

nomis_g/Getty Images

Gauteng may not have as many game-viewing opportunities as its neighboring provinces, but you can still experience the thrill of a safari at Rietvlei Nature Reserve . Located on the outskirts of Pretoria, the reserve protects 3,800 hectares of pristine grassland and a full cast of wild animals. Keep an eye out for predators, including cheetah and leopard, endangered white rhinos, and many different antelope species. The park is also great for birding, especially around Rietvlei Dam. Wildlife-viewing options include guided game drives, walking trails, and horseback safaris.

Play a Round at Glendower Golf Club

PeopleImages/Getty Images

Currently ranked first in Gauteng and second in the country, Glendower Golf Club is one of South Africa’s best golf courses . The 18-hole, par-72 course was first opened in 1937 but has since been redesigned to keep up with international standards. As the host of the South African Open on many different occasions, the course has welcomed the likes of Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, and Graeme Storm. You can join this exclusive club by booking tee times online. Glendower Golf Club also offers a pro shop and lessons with PGA professionals.

Escape to the Magaliesburg Mountains

Mitchell Krog/Getty Images

The scenic town of Magaliesburg lies just over an hour’s drive northwest of Johannesburg in the foothills of the Magaliesburg Mountains. Gauteng residents and visitors love this corner of the province for its valleys and rivers, and for the many nature activities to be found nearby. Try your hand at fly fishing or mountain biking, explore the countryside on horseback, or shop for souvenirs at a local craft studio. From game farms and wellness retreats to hot air balloon charters and quaint B&Bs, there’s something for everyone in Magaliesburg.

Travel in Luxury Aboard the Blue Train

Those that wish to explore South Africa in the grand style of the colonial fortune-seekers can do so aboard the Blue Train , which runs on lines initially built to transport passengers from the mail ships in Cape Town to the gold reefs of the Witwatersrand. Today, the iconic royal blue train continues to carry passengers on two different routes, both of which start in Pretoria. Opt for a 31-hour journey through spectacular scenery to Cape Town; or head east to Kruger National Park . Expect luxury accommodations and five-star cuisine.

Breathtaking scenery

The best places to enjoy nature in gauteng, cradle of humankind.

The birthplace of man is an absolute must-see. Start at the Maropeng Visitor Centre  to get an overview of the origins of mankind, then head down into the Sterkfontein Caves  to see over 500 hominids dating back more than two million years, including Mrs Ples and Little Foot. There are 12 more fossil sites and caves to explore, all of which have contributed to our understanding of the human evolution.

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

With a massive waterfall and 300 hectares of Highveld flora and fauna, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is a picnicking and birdwatchers’ paradise. Although it was only formalised in 1982, the site and its unique geological formations, and indigenous aloes and cycads, has been a popular destination for hundreds of years.

Magaliesberg Mountains

The feeling when you get to the Magaliesberg Mountain Range is of timeless magic. Just a short drive from Johannesburg, you can explore these mountains that are older than Mount Everest and host to a variety of ancient biomes. This mountain wonderland is filled with an astounding variety of flowers, trees and animals and is also home to some of South Africa’s most-loved hotels, spas and country restaurants. While there, try out hot air ballooning, go bird watching or join a safari to find the elusive leopard.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve

A local favourite, this nature reserve and wetland is teeming with wildlife such as zebra, rhino, cheetah, buffalo, black wildebeest and blesbok. Rietvlei is also great for picnics, riding, cycling and fishing. Birdwatchers are particularly happy here – sightings include the fish eagle, kingfishers, the grass owl, spike-heeled lark, buffy pipi and the orange-throated longclaw.

Tswaing Crater

Just 200 000 years ago an asteroid collided with the earth, leaving a crater 1.3km in diameter. If Pretoria was around then, it would have been annihilated. About 100 000 years ago, stone tools were being used to harvest salt and collect water. Until the 1990s, the Tswaing Crater was at the centre of a ferocious academic debate around whether it is an impact crater or not. No matter how it was created, visiting the crater is a great outdoor experience.

Melville Koppies

Situated in one of Joburg’s most popular lifestyle neighbourhoods, the rugged Melville Koppies has examples of over 80% of the flora species found in Gauteng. The hiking area has evidence of a Stone Age village and iron-smelting works, proving that Melville has been a popular village for thousands of years.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

Just south of Joburg, Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve offers 13 330 hectares of ridges, plains and kloofs for those who want to get some fresh air. Hikers can choose from 66km of trails, depending on their level of experience. While en route, look out for antelope, baboons, cheetahs and hyenas.

Take a 7km hike around the dam, or stay overnight to get the full experience.

Just 40km from Pretoria, Dinokeng, which means "Place of Rivers", is a popular destination for people looking for an easy-going game experience. Expect to see zebra, buck, wildebeest, warthog and more. There’s also a local brewery and fantastic restaurants.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve

Groenkloof was one of the first areas to be declared a nature reserve. Today, it’s considered to be one of the best hiking experiences. With a variety of options, there is a trail for everyone – from walkers, to mountain bikers and horse riders, to kids and hard-core hiking groups. While trekking, keep your eyes open for kudu, impala, blue wildebeest and ostrich.

14 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Pretoria

Written by Karen Hastings , Carri Wilbanks and Becca Blond Updated Dec 25, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

In the fertile valley of the Apies River, at the foot of the Magaliesberg range, Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City, thanks to the blaze of purple blooms that brighten its many parks and gardens in the spring. Pretoria is also the administrative capital of South Africa , sharing capital city status with Cape Town and Bloemfontein . The city lies about 55 kilometers from Johannesburg , yet the two cities seem a world apart.

Pretoria is a city of civil servants, diplomats, and trim and tidy residential districts with a large population of Afrikaners. It is also an important industrial town and an educational and cultural hub. The University of Pretoria was founded in 1930, and UNISA, the University of South Africa, is one of the largest open universities in the world.

Top things to do include checking out the city's many historic buildings, monuments, and museums, as well as its beautiful botanical gardens and nature reserves, some of which offer excellent game-viewing opportunities just a short drive from the city center. For more ideas on the best places to visit, see our list of the top tourist attractions in Pretoria.

Pretoria National Botanic Garden

The Pretoria National Botanic Garden, in the city's eastern suburbs, is a peaceful oasis close to the city. The 76-hectare gardens spotlight South African species, with more than half the country's tree species, as well as many flowering plants, cycads, aloes, and other impressive collections. A quartzite ridge slices the park into two sections, with vegetation in the warmer north-facing half contrasting with that in the colder south-facing section.

The plants are grouped according to their climatic region, such as the savannas of the Karoo, coastal forests, and the grassland plains of Namibia. Paved nature trails lead through the natural vegetation of the rocky ridge above the garden. Also on the grounds, the National Herbarium is home to the largest collection of plant specimens in South Africa, with more than a million species catalogued and stored here. After exploring the lovely gardens, visitors can enjoy a meal at the lakefront restaurant.

Voortrekker Monument

High on a hilltop south of the city center, the Voortrekker Monument is a South African National Heritage site and one of the country's most visited historic monuments. It was built in 1949 to commemorate the Voortrekkers, the Boers who pushed northward into unknown territory in the mid 19th-century.

This 40-meter-high square granite structure is a prominent landmark in the city with steps leading up to the Hall of Heroes, where 27 marble reliefs depict the Great Trek of 1838. Surrounding the monument is a wall depicting ox-wagons representing the trek wagons. On 16 December each year, a shaft of sunlight shines through an opening in the dome and illuminates a cenotaph below, which reads. "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" ("We are for you, South Africa").

Occasionally, the hall hosts classical music performances, which highlight its excellent acoustics. Museum exhibits depict snapshots of life during this important period. After browsing the interior, visitors can admire panoramic views of Pretoria from the roof or enjoy a meal at the restaurant.

National Zoological Gardens of South Africa

Spanning 85 hectares, the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa provides a full day of animal fun for the family. This large zoo encompasses a walk-through aviary, a reptile house with a collection of animals from all over the world, as well as the country's only inland aquarium where visitors can see many species of fish including ragged tooth sharks.

Among the large mammal collection, highlights include the lion and tiger exhibit, hippos, and elephants. To tour the zoo, visitors can rent golf carts by the hour, ride the cableway for a bird's-eye view, or stroll along the paths for a close-up look at the animals; wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are expansive. Night visits and overnight camping adventures are also available.

Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre

At the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, about a 45-minute drive from Pretoria, animal lovers can get up close and personal with some magnificent African creatures. This non-profit center was established in 1971 as a cheetah breeding project and has since successfully bred African wild dogs, Cape vultures, and brown hyenas among other animals.

The center was also the first breeder of the rare king cheetah. Visitors can choose from a variety of educational tours, including a three-hour guided tour and touch experience, where guests accompany keepers on the feeding rounds and enjoy a petting experience with these graceful animals. This is a fantastic opportunity for photographers to capture close-up images, and the cost helps fund conservation projects.

Union Buildings

Set in beautiful gardens, the Union Buildings command the highest point of the city on Meintjieskop Hill near historic Church Square, site of the city's first settlement. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1913, this impressive range of sandstone buildings mixes Italian Renaissance, English Renaissance, and Cape Dutch styles. It's the seat of government and also houses the offices of the president and the state archives.

In the gardens, which slope down in terraces to Church Street, are the Delville Wood Memorial , commemorating the South African soldiers who fell in the First World War; statues of the South African prime ministers Louis Botha, J. B. M. Hertzog, and J. C. Smuts; as well as a nine-meter-tall statue of Nelson Mandela. Visitors come here to stroll among the gardens, ogle the architecture, and admire the impressive city views. The site also holds a special place in the hearts of many South Africans after former President Nelson Mandela's inauguration took place here in 1994.

Address: Arcadia Park, Church Street, Pretoria

Freedom Park in Pretoria

Sitting on Salvokop Hill with panoramic views, Freedom park traces the story of South Africa's liberation and honors those who played an important role. The site opened to the public in 2007 and encompasses a series of poignant memorials and an impressive museum with exhibits examining the nation's history from the dawn of humanity to the present day.

The site overlooks the nearby Voortrekker Monument and other key landmarks of the city below. A highlight is the Wall of Names, inscribed with the names of all those who lost their lives in South Africa's major conflicts; an eternal flame; and the Gallery of Leaders, an inspirational look at role models on the road to freedom. Guided tours take about two hours and provide fascinating insight to the stories represented here, as well as the symbolic features of the architecture.

Bushbuck in the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve

A haven for hikers and nature lovers, Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve spans 100 hectares in the foothills of Moreleta Kloof near the city center. In the 19th century, the reserve was a dairy farm, and one of the original buildings has been converted to a restaurant where visitors can dine on a beautiful deck, often with a parade of animals in view.

Springbok, impala, bushbuck, zebra, and ostrich are among the wildlife found in the park, as well as an abundance of birds. A tributary flows through the reserve providing water for the animals, and hiking trails range in length from 1.5 kilometers to more than three kilometers.

Other lovely green spaces close to the city center include Faerie Glen Nature Reserve , part of the Moreleta Spruit Nature Trail, which follows a winding course along the banks of a stream through ever-changing scenery, as well as Groenkloof Nature Reserve with hiking, horseback riding, and 4WD trails. Birders will enjoy the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary, named after the South African ornithologist who wrote a popular handbook on the birds of South Africa. Bird hides line the shores of the reservoir, and more than 100 indigenous species make their home here.

Melrose House

Melrose House, a National Monument, offers visitors the experience of stepping back in time to the late 19th century. Built in 1866 by wealthy businessman George J. Heys, this handsome Victorian house was where the Treaty of Vereeniging, the Peace Treaty terminating the Anglo Boer War, was signed in 1902.

Filled with antiques, the house is an excellent example of preserved Victorian architecture. Highlights include the stained-glass windows, porcelain ornaments, paintings by British artists, and ornate architectural flourishes. Guided tours are available. The house is also used for art exhibitions, concerts, and antique fairs, and the café serves snacks in the tea garden.

Address: 275 Jacob Maré Street, Pretoria

Ditsong National Museum of Military History

Ditsong Museums of South Africa is a group of eight national museums with significant cultural collections. The Ditsong National Museum of Natural History , formerly known as the Transvaal Museum, has an extraordinary collection of mammals, amphibians, fossils, geological specimens, and archaeological material.

In the Austin Roberts Bird Hall, visitors can see more than 800 species of birds indigenous to South Africa. Another Ditsong Museum is the National Museum of Cultural History with Bushman rock engravings, an ethnological section, Cape Dutch furniture, silver, and archaeological material.

Sammy Marks House is a historic house worth visiting. This grand Victorian mansion was home to the successful industrialist and his family from 1885 to 1909 and still contains most of the original furniture and ornaments. After a tour here, visitors can enjoy tea and scones in the garden.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve

On the outskirts of Pretoria, Rietvlei Nature Reserve offers a peaceful escape to nature and great game viewing less than a 20-minute drive from the city center. The dam was built during the Great Depression, and now constitutes 15 percent of Pretoria's water supply, as well as supporting a range of highveld game that was reintroduced to the area. Eland, red hartebeest, buffalo, blesbok, waterbuck, zebra, black wildebeest, hippo, and even cheetah are among the animals found here. Birders should keep a lookout for the comical secretary birds, as well as the blue crane, South Africa's national bird, and a breeding pair of fish eagles.

The reserve encompasses 3,800 hectares of rolling hills, sprawling grassland, well-marked roads, and of course, the dam itself, where anglers can cast their lines from the northern and western shores. Other highlights include the lion tours, hiking and horse trails, bird hides, a popular tea garden, and a playground to keep the kids entertained.

Kruger House Museum

Inside a modest Victorian on Church Street, the Kruger House Museum is the oldest and best known house in Pretoria. From 1883 to 1900, it was the home of Paul Kruger, President of the former Transvaal Boer Republic.

Today it has been turned into a museum with mementos and exhibits relating to his life and the politics of the time. Note the two stone lions on the verandah. They were gifted to President Kruger for his birthday in 1896 by the Northern Cape mining magnate Barney Barnato.

Location: 59 WF Nkomo Street, Pretoria Central

From walking with baby lions to horseback safaris, Horseback Africa is a private wildlife reserve just under 50 kilometers from Pretoria and one of top attractions in the area. The Lion Tours are the most special experience here. The mission is to create greater awareness of animal conservation while allowing you to interact with young lions up to one year old.

Begin in the garden feeding the baby lion cubs and learning interesting facts about their species. Then take a walk with the adolescent lions through the reserve. While amazing for guests, the walks are also super important to the lions who need to hone their hunting skills. That said, the lions often ask to stop and cuddle.

Beyond the big cats, the reserve offers horseback riding safaris that let you get up close and personal with other wildlife like zebra, wildebeest, kudu, and giraffe on trail rides. These are suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike, as each group includes at least two guides. Although you can choose to stay the night here, many visit on a day trip, and the reserve offers a package that includes a morning horseback riding safari, lunch, and an afternoon Lion Tour.

The European-style Hazel Food Market is one of the top things to do in Pretoria on a Saturday. Located adjacent to the Greenlyn Village Centre in the Menlo Park suburb, the market has more than 70 stalls selling everything from artisanal breads to fresh fruits and veggies, flowers, baked goods, and local meats like biltong.

You'll also find a wide range of prepared food from South Africa and the globe with Thai, Mexican, Indian, and American BBQ all among the international choices. When it comes to a taste of South Africa, try the sosaties (a skewer of BBQ meat) or the koeksisters (deep-fried dough with syrup).

Location: 64 14th Street, Menlo Park

Covering an entire city block, the Pretoria Art Museum has been around since the 1930s. It was originally established to house the City Council of Pretoria's Art Collection after a large donation of 17th-century pieces from the "New Dutch" school.

Over the decades, the museum's collection has increased and now focuses mainly on South African art. The permanent collection has more than 3,000 pieces on display, including works by South African masters like Henk Pierneef, Irma Stern, and Pieter Wenning, among others. It also has a contemporary art collection with pieces by the likes of Sam Nhlengethwa, Judith Mason, and Lucas Sithole.

The museum decided to focus on South African art because Cape Town and Jo'burg already had substantial European art collections from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It hosts a permanent collection, as well as national and traveling exhibitions. These include shows by local artists, and some of the pieces are for sale.

Pretoria is also home to some excellent galleries. If landscape art is your jam, then pay a visit to the Chris Tugwell Gallery. One of South Africa's top landscape artists, Tugwell works mostly in oil, and his pieces have a subtle quality that intrigues. Located in the Brooklyn Mall Shopping Center, the gallery also features ceramics, bronzes, and sculptures from other top South African artists.

Address: Corner of Franscis Baard and Wessels Street
