Again went on a catfish trip with Kevin and it will not disappoint you . He is a great guide and also a awesome person . Very informed with regards to all aspects of freshwater fishing and gear.

Photo of Max H.

Kevin was so great and accommodating! On call while you're in the water. Knowledgeable of the trails and very covid-conscious. Choose a nice day and rent a kayak or 2 with friends. The sky is so beautiful and sun was out to warm up a winter day!

Kayaking on the Schuylkill

I'd give 6 stars if I could!! Kevin was amazing from the get go, with patience, and flexibility that are extremely uncommon! We changed the arrival time very close to the trip and he worked right around us! When we needed to modify our departure start-point due to time constraints, Kevin did it without batting an eyelash! During the trip, he was there for us, inexperienced kayakers, the entire time. When we lost 2 paddles a few minutes into the trip due to an unexpected rapid, Kevin came right over with spares without a bad word, and not a word about charging us for them. When we needed to call off the trip in the middle, once again, Kevin accommodated us (and believe me, carrying those boats up that rocky road wasn't easy!)! Good price, great guy, and great attitude! You won't regret interacting with Kevin!!

Main Salmon

For any family looking for one of the premier river adventures in the U.S. the Main Salmon should be on the list.  Big splashy class III and IV rapids, mixed with smaller whitewater and placid pools mean this trip has all the excitement one could want without having too much.

Hells Canyon

Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America, and is filled with thrilling whitewater, arguably some of the biggest rapids in the Pacific Northwest.

Middle Fork of the Salmon

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is the quintessential river trip. It begins as a small stream near 6000 feet above sea level at Boundary Creek and drops nearly 3000 feet before meeting the Salmon River near Cache Bar.

Lower Salmon

The Canyons of the Lower Salmon River are filled with fun whitewater rapids and enormous beaches that rival any tropical destination.

Selway River

The Selway River is simply one of the most exclusive river adventures in the U.S.  One of the most remote and wild commercial river trips in the U.S. the Selway only has one launch per day (private or commercial) and has a comparatively short season from mid-may until the end of July.

Find A River Adventure

The first commercial river rafting trips in the United States were launched in Idaho. Idaho outfitters always have been leaders and standard-setters for this industry.

Idaho also has more places to go river rafting. No other state can claim as many recreational river miles as Idaho. The American Whitewater Affiliation counts more than 3,100 whitewater river miles in the state.

Outfitters offer rafting trips of all kinds for all ages and abilities. Families enjoy fun excursions on rivers such as the Main Salmon, the North Fork and Main Payette Moyie, and the St. Joe. Sightseers like quiet flat-water floats on rivers such as the Clearwater, the Boise River and the Snake in the Snake River Birds of Prey Area. Whitewater seekers go for the Middle Fork of the Salmon, Hells Canyon, the Lochsa, Selway, Bruneau, Jarbidge, South Fork Payette, or Snake River, Southern Idaho. Idaho outfitters take care of everything on these trips. Guides row the rafts or lead guests in paddling their own. They provide tents and waterproof gear bags. They cook all the meals, including salads made from fresh fruits and vegetables and Dutch-oven baked breads and desserts. They lead games on the beach and around the campfire.

Most Idaho river rafting companies carry inflatable kayaks along on their trips for the enjoyment of their guests. Guides provide instruction.

Leisurely rowing: Lakes Basin, CA

Simple pleasures really can be the best. They’re what Northern California’s Lakes Basin area has to offer. About an hour and a half northwest of Lake Tahoe, the basin holds more than 50 alpine lakes—Gold, Packer, and Lower Sardine are the most popular—accessible by car or hiking boots.

The region has its plush side—just sample the Citron cocktail at sunset at Sardine Lake Resort—but its true heart is easygoing, low-key, and thrifty. There are more than 10 public campgrounds, including Sardine Campground, where every site has a view of the jagged Sierra Buttes. You can rent boats at Sardine Lake Resort. Or hit the area’s dozens of trails: Families can wander the easy 0.5-mile path to Frazier Falls; intrepid hikers can climb about 2.5 miles to the top of Mt. Elwell or conquer the mighty pinnacle topped by the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout, a 7-mile round-trip.

Stay: Spots at Sardine Campground can be reserved ( $21; recreation.gov ). Gold Lake Campground is first come, first served ( $10 ), as are some sites at Lakes Basin Campground; others can be reserved ( from $18; recreation.gov ).

Whale-watching: Inside Passage, B.C.

The 315-mile ferry route from Port Hardy, on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, to Prince Rupert, in northern B.C., is the same one that Alaskan cruise liners follow. And B.C. Ferries’ newest vessel, the Northern Expedition, offers a decidedly cruise-ship-like experience: 55 staterooms, buffet with linen napkins, and a lounge with plush recliners stationed by picture windows. Skip the ship’s movie theater and watch the nature show outside: rain-forest islands, white-sand beaches, snow-clad peaks, orcas, porpoises, and bald eagles.

Stay: On land, spend a few days poking around Rupert, with its small inns and cafes. From $187 U.S./person plus $425 U.S./vehicle; bcferries.com

Surfing: Waikiki, HI

When it comes to surfer snob appeal, Waikiki sucks. The Kelly Slaters, the Alana Blanchards, they’re shredding monster waves in Bali, Tahiti, across Oahu on the North Shore. But for beginners? Waikiki is utter bliss. Start with the water, a caressing 72°. Add a break that generates the world’s most gentle, evenly spaced 3- to 6-foot swells. Finally, note the wealth of instructors. We’re in awe of Hans Hedemann for a boardside manner that makes the far-fetched (you, standing up on a surfboard) seem easy. Here, you will ride a wave, and if Kelly and Alana aren’t shredding beside you, you’ll be having too much fun to care. Hans Hedemann Surf School: 2-hour group lesson $75, private $150; hhsurf.com

Splashing around: Catalina Island, CA

This island retreat, only 40 minutes by ferry from the mainland, is the ultimate SoCal beach paradise and a great choice for a family weekend. You can splash around on Avalon Beach, stroll through the harbor town of Avalon, or take a jeep tour of the wild backcountry.

Kayaking: San Juan Islands, WA

It’s easy to be dazzled by talk of spotting breaching orcas, playful harbor seals, and colorful seastars. But once you’re bobbing serenely in 3-inch wavelets in the San Juan archipelago, you’ll understand the deeper seduction: the kayaking life, in which you’re no mere observer of the weather, the tides, and the marine life but a full participant among them. And there is just no better place to spend the night than camping on these serene islands. You might hear the distant thrum of boats on the water, but you’re in a different universe—one where your itinerary is shaped by nature. Anacortes Kayak Tours: 2- to 5-day tours $349–$849 May–Sep, including meals and gear; anacorteskayaktours.com

Motorboating: Lake Powell, AZ

A blue mirage set in red rocks, Lake Powell—which forms the watery heart of Glen Canyon National Rec Area—has nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline, which means a lot of Lake Powell beaches to choose from. A few, like Lone Rock Beach, can be reached by car. But some of the best are nameless coves accessed only by boat. Good thing you can rent powerboats at three lake marinas: Antelope, Bullfrog, and Wahweap. (Houseboats are also popular, but you can’t navigate into narrow coves as well.) Don’t miss a cruise to the lake’s south shore and Rainbow Bridge National Monument, home to the world’s largest known natural rock bridge. $15 per vehicle; nps.gov/glca or lakepowell.com (boat rental).

top water trips

Scenic floating: Yosemite National Park, CA

With El Capitan and Half Dome towering above, the Merced River beaches in Yosemite Valley sometimes get forgotten. Which is a mistake, especially in summer, when valley temps sizzle and the river water is blissfully cool. The two main beaches, Cathedral and Sentinel, are great for splashing or bobbing around in an inner tube. Don’t miss taking on the Merced by raft. Rent a four- to six-person raft at Curry Village Recreation Center, and float 3 miles to Sentinel Beach; the $26 fee includes shuttle service back to your start. In summer, take the El Capitan Shuttle to stop E4 and walk 1/4 mile to Cathedral Beach, or get off at E5, 1/2 mile from Sentinel Beach; $20 per vehicle; nps.gov/yose or 209/372-8319 (raft rental).

Top White Water Rafting Trips in the United States

top water trips

John & Lisa Merrill /Getty Images

White water rafting is one of the most exciting ways to get from A to B, and when you take on a trip on the white water, then you are really looking to enjoy the journey rather than looking to get to the destination as quickly as possible. The real excitement for most people is the opportunity to get wet as they go bouncing and paddling through the rapids, and the drops and turns in the river really help to make the trip successful. However, most such trips won't just be about the rapids, as the calmer periods on the river help you to relax and to enjoy the spectacular surroundings that these rivers are flowing through, with some of the country's best scenery on display.

Tuolumne River, California

Flowing from the stunning mountain scenery of the Yosemite National Park , this rafting adventure is one of the most popular trips in the country, and the action can be enjoyed over one, two or three days. This is located in a very rural and remote part of the state, so there aren't too many towns in the area, although Sonora and Groveland are usually the bases used by most people coming to explore the river. Grade IV and V rapids offer some great thrills during the journey, with the Tuolumne providing a cool stretch of water running through this dry and hot part of the state.

Colorado River, Arizona

Taking visitors along the most famous stretch of river in the United States, rafting on this river offers a variety of different rafting challenges, with the epic scenery of the Grand Canyon making for a stunning backdrop to the action. Flagstaff is a great base from which to start your trip along this amazing river, and there are a variety of options from one-day excursions to much longer adventures that can last up to two weeks, with other activities included along the way.

Arkansas River, Colorado

Located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado , the Arkansas River offers some stunning surroundings in which to venture on to the water , with the river flanked by high peaks on all sides. The rapids go all the way up to Grade V, with an awful lot of fun to be had down the deep Royal Gorge, which is a stunning steep-sided gorge filled with white water.

Deschutes River, Oregon

Most of the white water rafting will happen on the Lower Deschutes, which is a hundred miles of river running from the town of Deschutes down to the Pelton Dam. The river flows through a beautiful deep gorge with some superb rapids that is almost untouched by human activity and is known for the wonderful biodiversity, with animals such as deer, bighorn sheep, and ospreys commonly seen along the route of the trip.

Salmon River, Idaho

Situated in one of the most remote parts of the country, this wonderful river flows through the unspoiled countryside with deep valleys and beautiful forests and offers a great variety of different rafting trips. The majority of visitors head to the largest rapids that are found in the Middle Fork section of the river, but those looking for a longer trip can enjoy a wonderful week of rafting along this stunning river, along with touring the other sights .

Chattooga River, Georgia and South Carolina

The stunning Grade V rapids that can be found along the Section IV stretch of the river are enough to challenge the hardiest of rafters when the waters are high, while the rapids and the river level drops in the summer to offer more family-friendly rafting. Passing some beautiful valleys and flowing through some nice gorges, this is a great destination for rafting in the southeast .

What cocktail has been crowned Iowa's favorite?

A new study has named the Moscow Mule as Iowa’s most-loved cocktail.

On a hot summer day, just the thought of a Moscow Mule is refreshing. With your hands wrapped around a cool copper mug, sipping its gingery deliciousness is even more perfect if you’re sitting on a patio or rooftop.

How did Moscow Mules earn the spot as Iowans' favorite cocktail?

Iowans search the internet for Moscow Mules more than any other cocktail, according to a recent study by QR Code Generator .

The study looked at Google searches related to cocktail names to identify which are the most popular by state.

More: Where to find the essential bars that offer elevated cocktails in the Des Moines metro

It showed that Moscow Mules are the favorite cocktails in the state, with an average of 2,058 monthly searches.

Where to go in Des Moines for a Moscow Mule

If you’re searching for a Moscow Mule in the Des Moines metro try:

  • Francie’s Bar & Grill, 2100 Wakonda View Dr., Des Moines
  • The Copper Cup, 207 Fourth St., Des Moines
  • Angry Goldfish Pub & Eatery, 2301 SW Ninth St., Des Moines

Mojitos and Long Island iced teas rank No. 2 and 3 in Iowa, with 1,925 and 1,675 average monthly searches, respectively.

For mojitos locally, consider The Burger Shed in Altoona. Play some games at Dave & Busters while you sip a Long Island iced tea.

Aperol spritzes and margaritas round out the top five for Iowa’s favorite cocktails.

More: 11 destinations to dine and drink with a view in the Des Moines metro

Iowa’s Top 10 most popular cocktails

Based on Google searches, here's the complete list of most popular cocktails in Iowa compiled by QR Code Generator .

  • Moscow Mule
  • Long Island iced tea
  • Aperol spritz
  • Bloody mary
  • Espresso martini
  • Pina colada

How to make Iowa’s favorite cocktail, the Moscow Mule

This cocktail is traditionally served in a copper cup.

Mix 2 ounces of vodka and 1/2 ounce of lime juice. Top it off with 3 ounces of ginger beer.

How to make a mojito

This classic Cuban cocktail uses the island’s rum and gets flavor from mint, which is muddled to infuse the drink. Use a muddler to bruise the mint slightly. If you don’t have a muddler, other clean kitchen items, such as a wooden spoon, bar spoon or even a hot sauce bottle can be substituted.

Mix 1/2 ounce of simple syrup, 2 ounces of white rum, 3/4 ounces of lime juice and three mint leaves. Top it off with club soda.

How to make a Long Island iced tea

This cocktail goes down like a soft drink but packs a punch from the five hard liquors it contains. Combine equal parts vodka, rum, tequila, gin, triple sec, simple syrup and lemon juice. Top the Long Island iced tea with some Coke or Pepsi and a slice of lemon.

The Best Water Shoes for All Your Aquatic Adventures

Best water shoes in 2024

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

It’s hard—if not impossible—to enjoy a trip to the beach , lake, or river if your feet are taking a beating the whole time. Luckily, the best water shoes will prevent your toes from stubbing, your feet from slipping, and won’t leave you soaking wet by the end of your outing. These booties and sandals are obviously key gear if you’re paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking, but they can also be nice options for warm weather hikes that involve stream crossings (unless you have a great pair of waterproof hiking boots , that is).

Some water shoes are highly protective and rugged, while others are lightweight and almost socklike. Not sure which pair is right for you? We found the best options to try, according to experts, SELF testers, and online reviewers.

Our top picks

  • Best Overall: Merrell Hydro Moc
  • Best Budget: Teva Hurricane Drift
  • Most Protective: Keen Newport H2
  • Best Minimalist: Bedrock Cairn Evo Sandals
  • Best Lace-Up: Astral Loyak
  • Best Traction: Arc’Teryx Norvan SL 3 Shoe
  • Most Supportive: Chaco Classic Z/1 Sandal
  • Best for Colder Water: NRS Kicker Wetshoe

What to look for when shopping for water shoes, the best water shoes.

Hydro Moc in soft orchid color way on white background

Backcountry

  • Very comfortable
  • Cool in a gorpcore way
  • Best suited for beginners and more casual activities

Last year, our Sneaker Award testers wore their Hydro Mocs in the sand and surf at beaches along the East Coast and were pleasantly surprised. “I'm blown away by how soft and cushioned they are,” one tester wrote. “I think these outpace Crocs in terms of color (and style)—the arch is far more supportive and they feel like walking on cushioned foam.”

Honorable mentions: The large holes throughout the shoe help with drainage, while the outsole has shallow lugs for traction. Our testers also noted that Moc’s backstrap felt secure, even though it isn’t adjustable, and that the shoe was really easy to clean when mud and sand got inside. We’ll just note that, while the Hydro Moc is great for most water activities, it isn’t the most technical option on our list—so if you’re a very experienced paddler, you might want another pair for more challenging trips.

  • Sizes: US 5 to 11 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)

Hurricane Drift in black and white color way on white background

Hurricane Drift

  • Adjustable ankle strap
  • Very lightweight
  • Sand and debris can get lodged in the Velcro straps

We’re big fans of Teva’s Hurricane line, and the Drift model is the lightest style of the bunch: Clocking in at six ounces per shoe and made solely of cushy, supportive foam, they’ll actually float alongside you if you kick them off on your next tubing trip. But just because they’re wonderfully lightweight doesn’t mean they’re flimsy: “Went to a waterfall in a jungle with slick rocks everywhere. Wore these bad boys and did not slip once! 10/10,” wrote one Teva reviewer. The fact that they cost about half of some of our other picks certainly doesn’t hurt, either.

  • Sizes: US 6 to 11 | Widths: Medium | Materials: EVA

Newport H2 in dark green color way on white background

  • Tough toe bumper
  • Water-wicking
  • Available in cool colors
  • Bungee fastening isn’t as adjustable as options with straps

Travel photographer Kathryn Cooper previously told SELF that Keen’s quick-drying Newport H2 sandal sees her through long work days and fun weekend outings. “They’re easy to slip on and off [and] have the ability to go in and out of water,” she said. “I wear them both to the supermarket and on six-mile day hikes .” She also shouted out the fact that their closed-toe design keeps her feet safe from debris—and Keen really did not skimp when it comes to this pair’s protective features. The toe cap is reinforced with burly rubber, while the thick, lugged sole is designed to channel away water to help you maintain a solid grip.

  • Sizes: US 5 to 11 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Polyester, synthetic materials, EVA, rubber

Cairn Evo Sandals in black and clay color way on white background

Cairn Evo Sandals

  • Relatively lightweight
  • Easy to break in
  • Not suitable for challenging whitewater or cold water

Courtney Sweeney, a former river guide of 11 years and the office manager at Northwest Rafting Company in Hood River, Oregon, tells SELF that Bedrock’s lighter-weight hiking sandals are by far her favorite water shoes. “I wear my Bedrocks for short hikes that have water crossings (less than five miles), whitewater rafting on a moderate day, and beach trips,” she says, adding that their Vibram rubber soles are extremely grippy. Sweeney also notes that their minimal design lacks the common contact points that tend to chafe and cause blisters—plus, they dry fast and easily.

  • Sizes: US 6 to 14 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Polyester, nylon, EVA, rubber

Loyal water shoes in white color way on white background

  • Fits snugly and securely
  • Quick-draining
  • Water-repellent
  • Laces may catch on rocks and other obstacles

Lots of water shoes are slip-ons or have adjustable straps or bungee cords to make them easier to put on and take off. But if you want a super secure fit, go for a pair with laces, like Astral’s best-selling Loyak. Reviewers love it for sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, rafting, and just bopping around—it affords them enough sensitivity to feel what’s underfoot while providing plenty of traction on wet and steep surfaces.

  • Sizes: US 6 to 11 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Canvas, mesh, EVA, rubber

Norvan SL 3 Shoe in light pink and white color way on white background

Arc'teryx

Norvan SL 3 Shoe

  • Very grippy
  • Also useful for trail walks and runs
  • No drainage holes

When Sweeney wants to wear closed-toe shoes, she opts for Arc’Teryx’s Norvan SL 3 sneakers. They’re technically trail running shoes , but she says they feel exactly like a good pair of performance-driven water shoes should: They’re lightweight (for sneakers), easy to fit to your foot, and super grippy on wet ground. Their Vibram soles are so sticky that the brand actually recommends them for scrambling and climbing approaches, in addition to off-road runs. Plus, Sweeney says the Norvans are easy to wear with or without socks (so you can go without in warmer weather, then layer up when it gets chilly).

  • Sizes: US 5 to 10 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Synthetic fabric, EVA, rubber

Classic Z/1 Sandal in apricot and brown color way on white background

Classic Z/1 Sandal

  • Sturdy design
  • Excellent arch support
  • Adjustable straps wrap around your foot
  • On the heavier side for sandals

Outdoor experts, podiatrists, and SELF staffers have recommended Chaco’s OG sandal over the years for just about every reason. It’s durable, grippy, and comfortable enough to wear all day (it has a Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association, which indicates that experts have determined its design can promote good foot health). Even this writer (and her pancake-flat feet) loves Chaco’s signature arch support.

As a water shoe, the Classic Z/1s are just as impressive. “During a four-day rafting trip down the Rogue River, they were super secure during rapids, on hikes, while wet, and on uneven, slippery surfaces,” travel blogger Hanna Ashcraft previously told SELF.

  • Sizes: US 5 to 12 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Polyester, polyurethane (PU), rubber

Kicker Wetshoe in blue and gray color way on white background

Kicker Wetshoe

  • Stretchy fastener
  • Takes a while to dry, according to REI reviewers

Top paddling brand NRS made this low-profile wetshoe with a grippy, textured outsole; easy pull tab behind the heel; and a spacious toe box. It has a closed design, so you can wear it with socks, but thanks to its lightweight layer of insulation, it’s pretty warm on its own too. “Just what I was looking for to take on an Arkansas river float,” wrote one REI reviewer. “Good traction on the rocks. Feet stayed warmer in the cool water.” For even more coverage, NRS also makes bootie-style wetshoes .

  • Sizes: US 5 to 11 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Neoprene, rubber

If none of our top picks speak to you, there are still more shoes from beloved brands like Crocs and Speedo to consider. Check them out below.

All-Terrain in olive and black color way on white background

All-Terrain

Everything the All-Terrain has in common with Crocs’ Classic Clog make it great for puttering around camp . But its outdoorsy upgrades (like a higher-traction sole and an adjustable heel strap) also make it a solid option for water activities.

  • Sizes: US 6 to 12 | Widths: Medium | Materials: EVA, proprietary foam

Surf Knit Pro in white and black color way on white background

Surf Knit Pro

This straightforward water shoe costs less than $50 and has a stretchy, breathable upper. It probably won’t stand up to rougher conditions, but it can help you keep your footing on slippery surfaces in calm waters.

  • Sizes: US 5 to 11 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Synthetic fabric, EVA

Aqua X Sport Water Shoes in muted purple and black color way on white background

Aqua X Sport Water Shoes

With plenty of grip and sensitivity, Xero’s Aqua X Sport shoe allows you to feel every bit of the ground (you can even remove the insoles to feel closer to the ground). It’s flexible and light, so even though it’s a closed-toe shoe, it still provides a barefoot feel.

  • Sizes: US 5 to 12 | Widths: Medium | Materials: Mesh, synthetic fabrics, PU, rubber

Shopping for water shoes isn’t all that different from shopping for hiking boots, Maggie Peikon , manager of communications at the American Hiking Society (AHS), tells SELF. Your priorities should be traction, protection, and support.

  • Traction: This is the most important feature to consider, Sweeney says. A grippy outsole will help you avoid slipping and potentially injuring yourself when navigating wet and watery terrain (for more on making safe stream crossings, check out AHS’s guide ). She recommends buying shoes with Vibram rubber soles for traction you can trust. For even more grip, you’ll want a pair with lugs along the sole, Peikon says. Just keep in mind that “the thicker the rubber of the outsole, the less you’ll feel the rocks, shells, [and other debris] that you’re trekking over,” she adds.
  • Protection: The conditions you plan to be in will help you decide how protective you need your shoes to be: How cold will the water be? Do you need to be mindful of jagged or large rocks? Are you hoping to keep sand out of your shoes? Insulation, rubber toe caps, and less permeable fabrics like neoprene (in that order) can keep your feet safe and comfy. The caveat here is that your shoe shouldn’t be so covered and protective that it doesn’t drain well. Pairs with vents, perforations, or mesh uppers are best for shedding lots of water, Peikon says.
  • Support: Most water shoes aren’t really considered supportive the way a sneaker with a firm arch is, but they can still provide some structure for your foot if they have a sturdy sole and a secure fit. Choose a pair with reliable fasteners that’ll help the shoe fit snugly around your foot (whether that’s a system of straps, bungee cords, or laces). And make sure they don’t loosen when they get wet, Sweeney says, since a loose shoe is more likely to cause trips and slips.

Whatever your activity of choice, and whichever shoes you buy, make sure to break them in and try them on brief outings before wearing them on a full-fledged trip. As Sweeney puts it, “Test your gear!”

Ukraine war latest: Western rockets destroyed key Russian bridge, Moscow claims - as Ukraine 'inflicts maximum damage' in Kursk

The Russian defence ministry claims rockets shipped from a Western nation were used by Kyiv to destroy a key bridge in Kursk, Russia. Volodymyr Zelenskyy says his forces are inflicting "maximum damage" on the Russian army in the region, as he explains what's behind the incursion.

We've more information on the Russian attack on Sumy city that we reported earlier this morning.

Pictures show approximately 10 cars ablaze after strikes outside several apartment buildings.

Some 41 explosions were recorded across the Sumy region, according to its regional military administration, caused by missiles, airstrikes, drones, tank shells and artillery.

"Russians continue to commit crimes against the civilian population of Sumy Oblast, directing rockets at residential buildings in populated areas," the Sumy administration posted on Telegram.

Vladimir Putin will be feeling "angry and potentially humiliated" by Ukraine's surprise invasion of Kursk, says military analyst Sean Bell.

He will not accept any negotiations involving the occupied territory, despite Ukrainian ambitions, and will instead deal with it "ruthlessly", Bell said.

But for now, Putin has two choices: play to Ukraine's agenda and bolster Kursk's defences with some of his elite units from the frontline in the Donbas, or move fresh troops down from the Lithuanian border and up from Crimea.

"But none of those troops will be battle-hardened and you only have to look back to the Second World War, that Blitzkrieg worked because they had battle-hardened troops," said Bell.

"They will be no match for Ukrainian forces on the front foot."

He continued: "Ukraine probably didn't expect to get this far. They put a thousand soldiers in, probably 20 tanks, and then found they were rolling in almost unopposed and they've capitalised on that."

Ukraine also has two options: try to hold onto parts of Kursk and risk being defeated there, or eventually withdraw, leaving Putin guessing which part of Russia's longer border will be hit next and forcing him to reinforce it, thereby easing pressure on the frontline, Bell explained.

"It seems to be an absolute masterstroke," said the analyst.

"Momentum, initiative, is everything on the front line and they've seized that. They've shown that Russia isn't in control of everything on their front foot. And just imagine the effect on morale of the troops on the frontline."

However it's important to note that Kyiv has seized just 0.003% of Russian territory, compared to the 20% of Ukraine controlled by Moscow, he added.

" Although people are talking about it being a bargaining chip in some sort of negotiation, I think that's really unlikely. Putin will not want to accept any form of negotiation around something like this. He is going to deal with it. He will deal with it ruthlessly. The question is when, and when does he ease pressure on the front line?"

A Ukrainian presidential adviser has said the Kursk incursion was required to convince Moscow to start "fair" peace talks.

Mykhailo Podolyak said Ukraine had no interest in occupying Kursk but it had to force Russia to start talks on Kyiv's terms.

"We need to inflict significant tactical defeats on Russia," Mr Podolyak said.

"In the Kursk region, we clearly see how the military tool is objectively used to convince the Russian Federation to enter into a fair negotiation process."

Senior Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity should be fully respected in any peace agreement, while Vladimir Putin has demanded it give up a fifth of its territory and any aspirations to join NATO.

Former Russian president and deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has also said Russia would continue to capture Ukrainian land after any truce.

The Ukrainian invasion of Kursk has turned the "narrative of the war on its head", says security and defence editor Deborah Haynes.

Kyiv will be hoping that its capture of land and Russian prisoners of war will put pressure on Vladimir Putin should the time come for peace talks, resulting in land swaps, she said.

But the "jury is still out" on the impacts of "this stunning move".

Haynes said Ukraine is "hoping to draw Russian forces from front line positions inside Ukraine".

"While there is evidence of that happening to a degree, there's also evidence, at least from Russian claims, that their troops in, for example, the east of Ukraine, are managing to gain ground."

What's the latest from inside Kursk?

"It looks as though they [Ukraine] are trying to sever the various routes into Kursk region," said Haynes.

Just as they destroyed bridges and roads in their own territory at the beginning of the war, Ukrainian forces are destroying Russian infrastructure to stop supplies reaching Moscow's soldiers in Kursk.

It is the same the military tactics that proved successful in pushing Russian forces out of northern Ukraine, said Haynes.

Back across the border from Kursk, Russia has launched attacks on the Sumy region this morning.

The Ukrainian air force said Russia launched an Iskander-K missile attack and a KAB bomb airstrike against Sumy city.

Local authorities reported two civilians were injured, bringing the total wounded in Ukraine over the past day to 10.

Another three civilians have been killed in the same attacks: two in the Donetsk region and one in Kharkiv.

A child was among six people injured in an attack on the Kherson region.

In another update this morning, Ukraine's air force said its defences shot down 14 Russian drones fired in an overnight attack over six Ukrainian regions in the south and centre of the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has heralded the achievements of his forces in the Russian Kursk area.

He encouraged his troops to inflict "maximum damage on all Russian positions" as they attempt to destroy army logistics.

"We see that the occupier is suffering losses, and this is helpful, very helpful for our defence," he said in a video address.

"It is about destroying the logistics of the Russian army and draining their reserves.

"We must inflict maximum damage on all Russian positions, and we are doing that.

"I thank each of our warriors for their precision, I thank them for strength and for resilience."

Russia's foreign ministry claims Ukraine used Western rockets to destroy a bridge over the Seym river in the Kursk region.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said it was the first time the region had been hit by "Western-made rocket launchers".

The launcher in question was "probably American HIMARS", she said.

"As a result of the attack on the bridge over the Seym River in the Glushkovo district, it was completely destroyed, and volunteers who were assisting the evacuated civilian population were killed."

Sky News cannot independently verify this account.

Russian authorities are attempting to evacuate around 20,000 civilians from the region in the wake of Kyiv's cross-border incursion on 6 August.

The bridge links areas of Kursk that are still controlled by Russia and areas in which Ukraine has made advances.

Kyiv says its incursion is intended to protect Ukrainian lives by preventing cross-border attacks and diverting Russian reinforcements.

Russia regularly fires rockets, missiles and drones into Ukraine from its border regions.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Yesterday, fighting continued in Russia's Kursk region as Ukrainian troops pushed on with their invasion.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his forces had advanced up to 3km (1.8 miles) in the area, and they were "strengthening" their positions.

The day also saw a key bridge over the River Seym in Kursk destroyed in a Ukrainian attack, Russian state media reported.

Ukraine's air force commander Mykola Oleschuk appeared to confirm the strike, sharing footage of the moment the bridge was hit.

In a post on Telegram, he said pilots had struck "enemy strongholds" and supply routes in the region.

Along the eastern frontline in Ukraine, Russian troops continued to push forward in the Donetsk region, with Moscow's defence ministry claiming its forces had taken control of the village of Serhiivka.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities ordered the rapid evacuation of the nearby city of Pokrovsk.

We'll be bringing you the latest updates throughout the day...

That's all our live coverage on the war in Ukraine for now.

We'll be back tomorrow with all the latest updates.

Before we go, here's a reminder of today's key events:

  • An ally of Vladimir Putin - parliamentary deputy Mikail Sheremet - warned that Ukraine's invasion of Kursk had put the world "on the brink of a third world war";
  • An anti-Putin group of Russians fighting on behalf of Ukraine urged Russian soldiers in Kursk to surrender and fight with Kyiv's army;
  • Russian forces took control of the village of Serhiivka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, according to the Russian defence ministry;
  • A bridge over the River Seym in Kursk was destroyed in a Ukrainian attack, Russian state media reported, citing security officials;
  • Ukrainian air force commander Mykola Oleschuk later shared a clip showing the moment a bridge in Kursk was hit, saying Ukrainian pilots had struck "enemy strongholds" and supply routes in the region.

Nine people linked to the late Putin critic Alexei Navalny have been added to Russia's list of "terrorists and extremists", the news agency AFP has reported.

It said those placed on the list include:

  • Mr Navalny's former spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh
  • His lawyers Olga Mikhailova and Alexander Fedulov
  • The chair of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation Maria Pevchikh
  • Opposition journalist Antonina Kravtsova
  • Activist Olga Komleva
  • Dmitry Nizovtsev, a host on Navalny's YouTube channel
  • The YouTube channel's producer Nina Volokhonskaya
  • Alexei Malyarevsky, a software programmer jailed for seven years for donating to Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation

The names were included on the website of the Russian financial monitoring service Rosfinmonitoring.

The service is responsible to tackling the financing of people and groups that Russia has deemed as "terrorists" or involved in "extremist activity" and is able to freeze the bank accounts of those listed.

On X, Kyra Yarmysh claimed one of her accounts had been blocked within three hours of being added to the list.

Mr Navalny died in February while serving a prison term in an Arctic penal colony.

Russia's prison authorities said the 47-year-old died after a walk, but his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, has accused investigators of trying to cover up his murder.

Hello, my name is Kevin Moriarty!

I grew up on the edge of the Oley Valley and spent most of my time fishing with my dad. He introduced me to fishing, just as his father did for him.  My good friend Jesse introduced me to fly fishing; he laid the groundwork for the fly fishing knowledge I have today.  As time has passed my interest and passion for angling has grown & expanded. My experience ranges from Fly Fishing Guide School In Montana to competing in professional kayak bass fishing tournaments around Pennsylvania and the East Coast.

I am a certified Wilderness First Responder and am trained and certified to guide overnight, daily and weekend trips. My training also covers river entomology, knot tying, drift boating, jet boating, wilderness medicine, fly casting, kayaking, cooking, ServSafe food handling, and food safety management. I also received my Associates in Business, graduating Cum Laude from RACC.

My ideal fishing day is hitting the water early, double hauling 10-inch flies for Musky on my 10 weight. Next, jumping in the kayak and floating the river, fly fishing, and spin fishing for Smallmouth. Finally, I’ll go out in the evening to throw dries with my 5 weight at rising trout. And In the Berks, Schuylkill, and Montgomery County Fisheries, it is possible to do all this in a day!

All of my training, education, and experience have been geared towards owning and operating my own guide service, adopting meaningful responsibilities, sharing my knowledge, and providing a service unparalleled in Pennsylvania. I have a ton of fun on the water; it’s where I find myself at home. So come on out with me and get on the water! Right on!
