Tom Cruise was born in 1962 in Syracuse, New York, where he grew up in near poverty. His mother was a special education teacher and his father — whom Tom's described as "a merchant of chaos," a "bully" and a "coward" — was an engineer who often physically abused him. After Tom's mother left his dad, he attended Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey, where he discovered acting. In 1980 — the same year this photo was taken — he graduated and moved to New York City to pursue acting full time. Tom, who briefly considered a career as Catholic priest when he was a teen, then moved to Los Angeles.

It didn't take long until Tom Cruise began to find acting success in Hollywood. After appearing in 1981's "Endless Love" and "Taps," he hit it big with his role as Steve Randle in "The Outsiders." Future movie stars Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe , Matt Dillon and Ralph Macchio joined him in the 1983 flick, along with established star Patrick Swayze.

Tom Cruise shot to stardom after he portrayed Joel Goodsen opposite Rebecca De Mornay in 1983's "Risky Business." The film was a critical and commercial success that grossed more than $63 million against a $6.2 million budget and went on to become a 1980s classic.

Tom Cruise truly achieved superstar status when he played naval aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in 1986's "Top Gun." The action flick was a huge blockbuster that grossed more than $356 million at the box office. Nearly 30 years after its release, "Top Gun" was selected by the U.S. Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry after being deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." The film inspired a critically acclaimed sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick," that was released 36 years after the original.

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers quietly tied the knot in May 1987 after a year of dating. The couple, pictured here at a 1989 Academy Awards afterparty, divorced after about two and a half years of marriage. Tom did take one thing from their short-lived union, however: his passion for Scientology, a religion he enthusiastically still practices today.

Tom Cruise scored his first Golden Globe win and first Oscar nomination in 1990 for his performance in "Born on the Fourth of July." He attended the Academy Awards that March with his mom, Mary Lee Mapother, on one arm and new girlfriend Nicole Kidman on the other. The couple tied the knot on Christmas Eve later that year.

"Show me the money!" Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. gave us one of the greatest scenes of all time in 1996's "Jerry Maguire." The romantic sports drama, which co-starred then-newcomer Renee Zellweger, was a critical and commercial success, plus Tom earned a Golden Globe and his second Oscar nomination for his performance as sports agent Jerry.

A year and a half after "Eyes Wide Shut" came out, Tom Cruise ended his decade-long marriage to Nicole Kidman . He filed for divorce in February 2001 while Nicole was unknowingly pregnant. She later suffered a miscarriage. "He was huge; still is," Nicole later told "Today." "To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him." The couple are seen here at Tom's "Mission: Impossible 2" premiere months before their split.

The following month, Tom made headlines for jumping on a sofa while gushing over his new real-life leading lady during an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The iconic pop culture moment was soon spoofed across the internet and even in films like 2006's "Scary Movie 4."

In June 2005 — after just a few months of dating — Tom Cruise asked Katie Holmes to be his wife, proposing at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The following week, they were photographed sharing a passionate kiss on the red carpet at the premiere of his film "War of the Worlds" in New York City.

That same month, June 2005, Tom Cruise stirred up controversy during an interview with Matt Lauer on the "Today" show. During the heated discussion, the A-list actor addressed Scientology and his issues with psychiatry, which he called "pseudoscience." The conversation was prompted by Tom's public criticism of Brooke Shields' endorsement of antidepressants, which she'd written about in her book "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression."

In 2012, Tom Cruise starred as Jack Reacher in the film adaptation of British author Lee Child's 2005 novel "One Shot." Like many of Tom's films before it, "Jack Reacher" was a critical and commercial success, grossing $216 million worldwide.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood in February 2012, but four months later, she blindsided him when she filed for divorce just days before his 50th birthday, ending their five-year union. They quickly reached a settlement only 10 days later.

Tom Cruise carried daughter Suri Cruise during an outing in New York City in July 2012, just a few weeks after Katie Holmes ended their marriage. The dad and daughter went to Walt Disney World together later that month and were photographed on a mini-golf outing in New York's Adirondack Mountains in September 2013, but have not been seen together publicly since then.

In July 2015, Tom Cruise returned to the role of Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation," the fifth installment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise — the 16th highest grossing film series ever at the time. The A-list actor, who frequently performs his own stunts, has garnered attention for the plane stunt he shot for the film, which he's called "undoubtedly the most dangerous thing I've ever done."

In 2018, Tom Cruise once again played Ethan Hunt, this time in "Mission: Impossible – Fallout," the sixth movie in the iconic film franchise. "Fallout" continued the previous films' legacy as a blockbuster with more than $791 million in ticket sales as well as a wildly high 97% fresh rating with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. For this one, Tom again did his own stunts, which included dangerous motorcycle chases in Paris, a building-to-building roof jump (he badly broke his ankle), a high-altitude, low-opening (HALO) parachute jump from the back of a C-17 military transport plane (which he did 106 times to get all the shots!), and a helicopter chase and fight with co-star Henry Cavill. "I trained for a year and a half to fly the helicopter," Tom told The Hollywood Reporter.

In 2020, Tom Cruise was rumored to be getting closer with actress Hayley Atwell as they filmed "Mission: Impossible — Death Reckoning Part One" amid the coronavirus pandemic, though neither has confirmed nor denied reports of romance. They're seen here filming in Rome that October. They were later seen together off-set at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London in July 2021.

In October 2021, Tom Cruise made headlines when he was photographed with son Connor at a National League Division Series baseball game in San Francisco with a fuller-looking face than usual, sparking widespread speculation on social media about whether he may have had facial fillers, gained weight or done something else that temporarily altered his looks.

Tom Cruise celebrated the May 2022 release of his blockbuster sequel "Top Gun" Maverick" — which hit theaters 36 years after the original and earned an incredible 96% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes — with a series of huge premieres and screenings across the globe, including in London, where he was joined by royalty : Prince William and Duchess Kate . Some surprising romance rumors popped up about Tom Cruise in May 2023 after he was spotted chatting with Shakira at the 2023 Miami Formula One Grand Prix in Florida. Despite looking very friendly, shortly after their public appearance, TMZ insisted the two were "just friends" and not dating.

In June 2023, Tom Cruise went on a worldwide press tour for his latest flick, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One." The global premiere took place in Rome on June 19, where he posed in front of the iconic Spanish Steps.

Tom Cruise slid into a living room back in the early 1980s and began a pop-culture journey that has soared to an iconic film career.

From those classic movies like “Risky Business,” Cruise has risen to a level of worldwide stardom that few actors—if any—can claim they have achieved.

His fame has been the quintessential Hollywood tale for nearly 40 years, one filled with controversy and marriages, rumors and roars, and a resume that includes some of the biggest hits in the cinematic vault.

The nostalgia mixed with a general infatuation with Cruise is at an all-time high in 2022, as the long-awaited (and delayed) “Top Gun: Maverick” hits theaters over Memorial Day weekend.

Widely considered his breakout performance at 19 years old, Tom starred as the handsome Joel Goodsen in Risky Business . There's a lot that can be said about Tom Cruise . The star is a Golden Globe-winning actor, producer, and dad of three . Cruise is known in Hollywood as one of the highest-paid stars, and he's held that status for decades.

Cruise is the only son of four children, who was raised by his mom, Mary Lee (née Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and dad, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. His parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky, where he lived for 11 years, but Cruise moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, with his mother following his parents' divorce in 1973, per IMDb .

Tom Cruise sets off to New York City with dreams of becoming a star

Tom Cruise had big plans to become a Hollywood star, and he set off to New York City with his dreams at the forefront. Though he struggled to get his career off the ground in the beginning, he persevered and kept auditioning before landing his debut gig in 1981's "Endless Love," starring icon Brooke Shields. That same year, he appeared alongside Sean Penn in "Taps."

By 1983, Cruise was establishing himself as an up-and-coming heavyweight, snagging roles in 1983's "Losin' It," "Risky Business," and "The Outsiders." He portrayed the character of Steve Randle, a member of the group of young actors dubbed the "Brat Pack," with Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, and Rob Lowe. Though "The Outsiders" didn't receive the praise it was hoping, the gig led to roles in 1985's "Legend," and ultimately, his iconic starring appearance in 1986's " Top Gun ."

"Top Gun," which became the highest-grossing film of that year (via Chicago Tribune ), confirmed Cruise's status as an A-list actor and catapulted the star into a life of fame and superstardom. According to Box Office Mojo , the action-romance flick, which follows the story of Cruise's character, Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, as he joins an elite naval flight school, has earned more than $176 million in the box office to this day.

Tom Cruise becomes one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors by the 1990s

With "Top Gun" on his résumé, Tom Cruise established himself as a Hollywood hotshot, and by that time, he was making the big bucks. In the late 1990s, Cruise snagged the title of one of showbiz's highest-paid actors in the world, according to Celebrity Net Worth .

The handsome heartthrob had already earned $9 million for 1990's "Days of Thunder" and another $15 million for his work on "Interview With the Vampire" in 1994, but his bank account skyrocketed when he landed the starring role in "Mission Impossible" in 1996. Entertainment Weekly reported he "pocketed $70 million" for the hit action film, and he also "negotiated a chunk of 'Mission's' overall $465 million gross."

Cruise's monetary gain is so impressive that a report from Casumo claims he pockets more than $7,000 per word. "When taking into account everything he's been in for almost 40 years, supposedly it's as much as $7,091 per word," CinemaBlend reported in April 2020.

But, while Cruise has more money than one could ever imagine, the producer knows he has earned every dollar in his $600 million fortune. "I get paid because I'm worth it and they should pay me that much. But I've never done work for money, ever," he shared with Vanity Fair in 2000 (via The Uncool ). "It is my life, it is what I do, it is what I love to do."

Tom Cruise falls in love with Nicole Kidman and starts a family

As he was cementing his place in the entertainment industry, Tom Cruise was also experiencing changes in his love life. The star walked down the aisle with his first wife, Mimi Rogers , in 1987, and they were together for three years. After they split in 1990, though, Cruise was not single for long, as he developed a deep bond with Nicole Kidman when they met on the set of "Days of Thunder."

Cruise wasn't the only one who was instantly smitten. "He swept me off my feet," Kidman recalled to Vanity Fair in December 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love." Later that year, Cruise and Kidman said "I do," and by 1995, they were the parents of their adopted kids, daughter Isabella Jane Cruise and son Connor Cruise .

Over the next few years, Cruise and Kidman raised their kids while juggling their busy careers as Hollywood stars. In 1997 and 1998, they worked together on "Eyes Wide Shut," an erotic thriller directed by legend Stanley Kubrick. Following his split from Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise fixated his focus on his acting career, and throughout the early 2000s, he balanced several roles in "Minority Report," "Austin Powers in Goldmember," and "Collateral." By April 2005, Cruise's personal life started making headlines once again when he publicly debuted his relationship with Katie Holmes .

While many speculated their romance was a publicity stunt, as Cruise was starring in "War of the Worlds" while Holmes was cast as the lead in "Batman Begins," they proved how serious they were when they got engaged less than two months later in June, per The Hollywood Reporter . Before they got the chance to walk down the aisle, though, Cruise expanded his family when Holmes gave birth to their daughter, Suri Cruise , in April 2006.

The duo wed seven months later in November, marking Cruise's third trip down the aisle. Following his a string of unsuccessful marriages, Tom Cruise became much more guarded in terms of his personal life. By 2016, Cruise sold both his L.A. mansions and purchased a penthouse in Clearwater, Florida, to focus on his work as a Scientologist. According to People , the home happens to be just one block away from the Church of Scientology's international headquarters.

Cruise has been a committed member of the controversial church since 1990, per Insider , and his involvement has been debated for years, especially since a source told Us Weekly in July 2019 that he's "not allowed" to see Suri. Regardless of the claims, plus the fact that Cruise has not been seen in public with Suri since 2013 , the Church fought back, telling Us, "Everything about your inquiry misrepresents the Church of Scientology."

These days, Cruise is also heavily involved in Hollywood, as he's set to star in several upcoming films . Most impressively, he's cast in an untitled project that will be filmed in space, per The Space Shuttle Almanac (via The Independent ).

Cruise isn't just busy in his professional life, though. The actor is reportedly dating actress Hayley Atwell . The two met on the set of "Mission: Impossible 7" and "hit it off from day one," The Sun reported in December 2020. It is a big weekend if your name is Tom Cruise and you’re a massive Hollywood heavyweight, as the action hero is celebrating his 60th birthday today.

He has a lot to celebrate at the moment, as Top Gun sequel Maverick is currently flying high at the box office, easily smashing through the $1billion mark worldwide.

That’s definitely a huge gift within itself.

There is no denying that he’s still at the top of his game, but how does he do it? 

In honor of Tom’s milestone big day, we’ve taken a stroll down memory lane to relieve some of his best moments and see what makes the Cruiser the last of the Hollywood icons.

1962: Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York. His full name was Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, but he was shrewd enough to shorten it. 

Suddenly, he stopped sounding like an absent-minded uncle in a Dickens novel and started sounding like a super-cool movie star.

1983: Risky Business. You may not remember much about this teen comedy drama, but everyone remembers Cruise being simultaneously silly and sexy as he dances around in his shirt, pants and socks. A star was born!

1989: Born On The Fourth of July. Cruise proved that he was more than a set of shiny teeth by playing Ron Kovic, Vietnam veteran turned anti-war activist. 

He earned the first of his three Oscar nominations, the last of which was for Magnolia in 2000. The last for now, that is …

1999: Eyes Wide Shut. Cruise and Nicole Kidman signed up for six months’ work on Stanley Kubrick’s erotic psychodrama, but they stuck it out for 15 months, hence Eyes Wide Shut holds the Guinness World Record for the longest ever unbroken film shoot. 

Cruise is no quitter – although his marriage to Kidman broke down soon afterwards.

2000: Mission: Impossible 2. Cruise dangled by one hand from a cliff, 2000 feet above the Utah desert.

And that’s really him doing the dangling, even if he had a safety rope which was digitally erased. 

Of course, the scene was hardly essential to the story, but it gave the Mission: Impossible series its raison d’etre: to show audiences a Hollywood legend doing his own insanely demanding stunts. A risky business, indeed.

2005: The Sofa Incident. Here’s where things went a bit wrong. Cruise was on The Oprah Winfrey Show to promote War Of The Worlds, but he raved about Katie Holmes and jumped on Oprah’s sofa instead. 

Between this loved-up gymnastics display and his attacks on psychiatry, Cruise acquired an unfortunate reputation for being a weirdo Scientologist. 

Lesson learnt; he’s been a lot quieter about his private life ever since.

2007: Lions For Lambs. This smug political drama isn’t great, but it IS directed by Robert Redford, and it remains the most recent example of Cruise working with a really big-name director. 

Young Cruise makes a point of ticking them off: Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Michael Mann, etc. But now he prefers to be the boss himself. 

Whoever the director may be, it’s Cruise’s vision of what constitutes an efficiently entertaining film that counts. Fair enough. If it weren’t for such control freakery, he probably wouldn’t have maintained his megastar status. 

But wouldn’t it be exciting if he collaborated with a challenging auteur once again?

2012: Jack Reacher. Cruise hasn’t made many iffy career choices, but deciding that he was the man to play Lee Child’s 6 ft 5 inch blonde vigilante was one of them. 

2017: The Mummy. Okay, so this is another iffy choice. Let’s move swiftly on.

Still, the film was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has since made every instalment of Mission: Impossible, so at least Cruise got a trusty new creative partner out of the deal.

2022: Top Gun: Maverick. A sequel to the most 1980s-ish of all 1980s movies, released 36 years after the original?

It should have been a disaster, but Cruise’s obsessive quality control paid off – and the fact that he hadn’t aged a day since the first film probably helped. 

2022: Cannes Film Festival. During an on-stage Q&A, a French journalist asks Cruise why he does his own stunts. 

Cruise’s reply: ‘No one asks Gene Kelly, why do you dance? Why do you do your own dancing?’

Yep, he’s passionate about what he does, all right.

TG:M has taken over $1billion at the box office, making it the year’s biggest cinema hit – and Cruise’s own highest grossing film. 

Don’t bet against him winning that long-awaited Best Actor Oscar next year.

‘Top Gun’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that “it wasn’t easy” to convince Cruise to take the role in a May 2021 interview with Variety. They ended up wooing the actor with his own ride on a Navy jet. 

He recalled, “They took him up on an F-14 and flipped him and did all kinds of stunts to turn him around and make sure he never got back in a cockpit. But it was just the opposite. He landed and he walked over to a phone booth and called me up and said, ‘Jerry. I’m making the movie. I love it.’ He became an amazing aviator himself. He can fly just about any plane they can make.”

“What is the challenge of this thing going to be?” he went on. “I wanted it to be an international film, and an international cast. Which at that time was different. I wanted to shoot it in England… I remember they said, ‘Can’t you shoot it in LA, or New York?’ And I was like no, I actually, I want to go to London.”

During the middle of the 1990s, Tom brought to life one of the best fictional superspies, Ethan Hunt. All of the “Mission: Impossible” films are highly anticipated and certified box hits. He also managed to win the hearts of women once again in his the movie “Jerry Maguire.” His line “You complete me” suddenly became an alternative way to say “I love you.” It moved the hearts of all hopeless romantics. Many would agree that he had us at “Hello.” 

Tom also challenged genres like science fiction in Minority Report, historical action drama in Last Samurai, political war thriller Valkyrie, musical comedy in Rock of Ages, and horror in The Mummy. The mentioned films are also fan favorites.

Tom has always adopted a modest clothing style. The talented actor is often seen wearing a simple black t-shirt, black pants, and a leather jacket during day-offs. Tom Cruise re-emerges: Actor looks his age after viral photos of his changing appearance

Tom Cruise went viral last month after photos emerged of the actor at a baseball game with a different appearance.  

This weekend, the 59-year-old actor was spotted at the Duxford Airfield in Cambridge, England, looking more like himself.

The upcoming M: 18 is the follow-up to the 2018 movie Mission: Impossible Fallout and is scheduled for release in 2023.

The actor appeared less bloated in the newer images compared to a month ago when he was subject to rumors about potentially undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Tom Cruise emerged in a navy blue sweater and dark blue jeans with a head full of hair. In addition, the Missions Impossible star appeared less bloated but seemed to have gained a little weight .

Mission Impossible 7 has finished filming

Despite currently filming scenes for Mission Impossible 8, the previous installment is yet to be released.

As with many movies in recent times, Mission Impossible 7 has had several COVID-related delays.

Mission Impossible 7 gaffer Martin Smith revealed that the movie had finished wrapping in September on his Instagram account.

Tom Cruise talks about filming Mission Impossible

Tom Cruise first starred as Ethan Hunt in the 1996 movie Mission Impossible.

The spy movie, which the actor produced, was a commercial and critical success and was the third highest-grossing film that year.

In a recent interview, he spoke about creating the movie in a clip via GamesRadar .

“I looked at Paramount, and I thought what I wanted to produce was something – I looked at it in many different ways… I wanted something that was going to be very commercial, potentially, but I wanted something that was going to be artistically challenging,” Cruise explains.

In an interview about the film, Tom Cruise explained the movie’s challenges in several countries.

“What is the challenge of this thing going to be? I wanted it to be an international film, and an international cast,” Cruise adds. “Which at that time was different. I wanted to shoot it in England… I remember they said, ‘Can’t you shoot it in LA, or New York?’ And I was like, ‘No, I actually, I want to go to London.'”

In addition, the busy actor is also promoting the upcoming movie Top Gun: Maverick, which is scheduled for release next year.
