Booked a cruise from Sydney ? Sydney’s Cruise Ship Terminals are just a hop, skip and jump away from the best the city has to offer.

Sydney has two dedicated cruise ship terminals: the Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal and the White Bay Cruise Terminal. Getting to and from

If you’re leaving or arriving at the Overseas Passenger Terminal Pier in Circular Quay , you’re spoilt for choice with transport options. In Circular Quay, you'll find trains (City Rail), buses, taxis and the City Ferries to take you almost anywhere in and around the city.

Sydney’s Kingsford International Airport is 13 kilometres from the terminal, which is about 30 minutes in a taxi. But be sure to allow enough time for traffic, especially at peak commuting times. You can be dropped off and picked up via George Street and Argyle Street, but there’s no short or long-term parking at the terminal itself.

The White Bay Cruise Terminal at Rozelle is only 6 kilometres from the centre of Sydney and 17 kilometres from the airport. There is short-term parking and access to the terminal via James Craig Road.

What you'll find at the terminals

Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal has an ATM, passenger lifts, escalators and toilets. While there are no foreign exchange and post facilities, these are easily found in Circular Quay.

Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal has toilets, public payphones, an ATM and a cafe. However, there is no post office, foreign exchange office, or Wi-Fi access.

While neither terminal offers duty free shopping, your cruise ship will undoubtedly have plenty for you to enjoy. Both cruise terminals have wheelchair access to the ships and terminal.

Spend a few hours in Sydney

Sydney is Australia’s first and biggest city, and it’s jaw dropping – so plan to stay for a couple of days before or after your cruise. If you only have a few hours to spare, explore the shops, cafes and galleries around the bustling harbour and nearby historic Rocks precinct,

Sydney is known for its fresh seafood, so dine al fresco at one of the many shoreline restaurants and watch the yachts, catamarans and tall ships jostle with the colourful ferries. Or take to the water yourself on a jet boat adrenaline ride or Sydney Explorer “Hop on Hop off” Harbour Cruise.

Got more time? Explore further afield

If you've got more time (ideally a day or two), why not explore further afield? Kids will love a visit to the local Taronga Zoo to meet the wombats, echidnas and koalas, or take them to the child-friendly Manly Beach for a gelato. Both are within easy reach of Circular Quay by ferry.

Take a walk in the Royal Botanic Gardens, which are filled with native plants and interesting wildlife, including white sulphur-crested cockatoos. The nearby Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is the perfect place to spend a cultural afternoon and has free entry.

For the more adventurous, there’s always a scenic flight around the harbour or along the Pacific coastline. Seaplanes leave from Rose Bay, a short ferry ride away, and are a great way to begin your holiday in style!

Sightseeing:

Sydney is a definite stop on just about any cruise that travels Down Under and often serves as a starting or ending point for ships that also travel to New Zealand. It is the largest city in Australia, and while many of the nation's cultural and financial institutions are located in Sydney, the city's real draw is its dramatic natural scenery. Although it is a modern city strongly influenced by British roots and current American popular culture, Sydney's real character is derived from its exotic location and brash beauty. Walking through the glass and concrete downtown, known as the Central Business District, you could be in any other Western-culture metropolis -- until a fluorescent red and green lorikeet parrot swoops overhead or an unexpected flash of the brilliant blue harbor appears between the skyscrapers. Any proper visit to Sydney must begin in the harbor, which is both the birthplace of the city and its current iconic centerpiece. The area is called Circular Quay (pronounced "key" by locals). It is hard to imagine a more picturesque setting for a city's heart than this, with the Opera House and harbor Bridge displayed against the inlet's bright water. Sydney spreads across a massive geographic area, but the majority of its most interesting areas can be found near the ocean coast, in the area known as the Eastern suburbs. Oxford Street, the main thoroughfare running east from downtown to the ocean beaches, hosts Sydney's famous gay and lesbian Mardi Gras parade each February and is popular because of its upscale shops and cafes during the rest of the year. Sydney is a well-balanced blend of a big city lifestyle and the laid-back Australian mentality. Although Aussies who hail from other towns often disparage Sydney for its flashiness and hectic pace, urban inconveniences seem minor here compared to places like New York and London. Tourism is a huge industry around Sydney, and locals are accustomed and happy to providing visitors with service, helpful directions and a rousing welcome to the stunning city that they call

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Sydney and Bondi Hop-on Hop-off Tour

Take a tour of the world-famous Sydney Opera House . There are a handful of varieties (backstage, historic and what is called the "tour de force" for travelers with special interests in architecture, engineering or the arts). Guided tours are conducted between 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Of course, schedule permitting, travelers can also take in a show. The best way to see the harbor is to get a bird's eye view from the top of the harbor Bridge on a Sydney harbor Bridge Climb -- not your ordinary stroll across a bridge and not just for the young and crazy. The 3.5-hour trek up and down the famous landmark is safe, slow and suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels; you'll don a bridge suit and wear a bridge harness along the ladder-like stairways and narrow catwalks. The climbs are guided tours and are offered during the day as well as at night. There are lots of rules and regulations, including: no kids under 10 (and children aged 10 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult), no women more than 24 weeks pregnant, climbers must wear rubber soled shoes, and all climbers must pass a breath-test (for a blood alcohol limit of less than .05 percent). From the bridge, visitors can walk around the inlet to tour the always-crowded Opera House. It is easy to continue from there through the Royal Botanical Gardens, a collection of flowers and trees overlooking the water, where it is possible to see some of Australia's unique flora without having to leave the city. Mass transit options abound from Circular Quay. Trains (there's a stop across from the terminal) are easily accessed.

Darling Harbour is reachable within a 35-minute (2.6 km/1.6 miles) walking distance from the dock at Circular Quay, or 10-20 minutes driving, depending on the traffic. From the White Bay terminal, it takes only a 5-10 minutes drive to get to Darling Harbour. This waterfront destination is home to some of Sydney's major attractions including Wildlife Sydney Zoo , Sea Life Sydney Aquarium , Madame Tussauds wax museum, Australian National Maritime Museum , Pyrmont Bridge, and others.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Sydney to be the first Australian port to offer shore power for cruise ships

Work on the AU$20 million facility fitted at White Bay Cruise Terminal will begin by the end of 2024 with completion expected in late 2026

Sydney to be the first Australian port to offer shore power for cruise ships

By Laura Hyde | 30 September 2024

The Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) is to build Australia’s first cruise ship shore power facility at Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal.

Initial work to prepare the site is expected to begin by the end of 2024, with completion of the project scheduled for late 2026.

The AU$20 million ($13.8million) contract for the facility at White Bay berth 5 has been awarded to Powercon. Cruise ships will be able to switch offer their engines and connect to shore power in port, which is expected to reduce emissions associated with the White Bay precinct by over 4,000 tonnes every year.

“This will be the first major shore power infrastructure in southern hemisphere and the carbon emissions reduction this project at White Bay will achieve is equivalent to taking 1,100 cars off Sydney’s roads or planting 20,000 trees each year,” said Jo Haylen, NSW Minister for Transport.

Once operational, it will be mandatory for any shore power enabled ship docking at White Bay to use the facility. According to the port authority, the vast majority of cruise ships using the terminal are already shore power enabled.

Installing a shore power facility is expected to reduce emissions associated with the White Bay precinct by over 4,000 tonnes every year

Both NSW and Federal Labor announced their support for a shore power project in 2019 with the former NSW Liberal Government agreeing to deliver a facility by 2024. However, funding was unavailable until now.

“Five years ago, Labor promised we would deliver shore power for White Bay Cruise Terminal, and cleaner air for the community on the Balmain peninsula; today that promise is being kept,” said Tanya Plibersek, federal member for Sydney. “This will be the first project of its kind in Australia, and it will be run on renewables. Awarding the contract for the shore power equipment design, fabrication, supply and installation, marks a major milestone in this complex project.”

“The port authority is focused on progressing the shore power project to our revised delivery date and creating a world-class, integrated, sustainable port of the future that supports our economy, the community and the NSW Government’s vision for the area,” said Philip Holliday, CEO of Port Authority of NSW.

NSW powering up for cleaner cruise ship visits

Published: 30 September 2024

Released by: Minister for Transport

In an Australian-first, New South Wales is charging up for a cleaner cruise industry, with a $20 million contract awarded to begin the landmark Shore Power project at White Bay Cruise Terminal.

Shore Power is wharf-side infrastructure that provides cruise ships with electricity by connecting to a landside charger, which results in fewer emissions as the engine does not have to stay running while docked.

This marks a huge step towards reducing cruise ship pollution, ensuring the cruise industry can be more sustainable and continue to thrive in NSW.

It comes as the summer cruise season officially kicks off in NSW, with the arrival of Diamond Princess into our harbour on Thursday morning and the Pacific Adventure at White Bay on Friday morning.

The latest data shows the cruise industry contributed $2.75 billion to the NSW economy in 2022-23 and created approximately 9,000 jobs.

This project means cleaner air and less noise for the residents of Balmain and Rozelle, with the precinct and population expected to grow in the coming decade as the Bays Metro West opens and much-needed housing is delivered.

Shore Power is estimated to reduce emissions associated with the White Bay precinct by over 4,000 tonnes every year.

The contract for the charger at White Bay berth 5 has been awarded to global leader in shore power technology, Powercon, with initial work to prepare the site set to begin by the end of 2024.

The move puts Sydney on par with other global cities adopting this technology, such as in Europe, where shoreside electricity will be mandatory at all main ports from 2030.

With critical equipment in high demand, the White Bay Cruise Terminal Shore Power project is targeted for completion by late 2026.

Once operational in 2026, it will be mandatory for any ship that docks at White Bay Cruise Terminal that is shore power enabled to use available shore power.  The vast majority of ships that use White Bay are already shore power enabled.

Port Authority will determine the best mechanism to implement the shore power mandate, likely to be through contract obligations with its cruise industry partners.

Both NSW and Federal Labor announced their support for shore power in 2019. The former NSW Liberal Government promised to deliver it in 2022 and said it would be ready by 2024 but failed to allocate funding to the project.

The Minns Labor Government is leading the rollout of Shore Power at other ports across Australia by supporting the development of Australian Standards that will inform future projects.

Federal Member for Sydney Tanya Plibersek said:

“Five years ago, Labor promised we would deliver shore power for White Bay Cruise Terminal, and cleaner air for the community on the Balmain peninsula. Today that promise is being kept.

“This will be the first project of its kind in Australia, and it will be run on renewables. Awarding the contract for the Shore Power equipment design, fabrication, supply and installation, marks a major milestone in this complex project.

“The community in Balmain has had to wait far too long for shore power to become a reality. They will remember that the former NSW Liberal Government claimed to support this project, but would not commit a single dollar of government funding.”

NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said:

“Today the contract to deliver shore power at White Bay Cruise Terminal has been signed, sealed, and delivered, ensuring less cruise ship pollution for generations to come.

“This will be the first major shore power infrastructure in southern hemisphere and the carbon emissions reduction this project at White Bay will achieve is equivalent to taking 1,100 cars off Sydney’s roads or planting 20,000 trees each year.

“The Minns Labor Government has done what the former government could never do. We’ve put pen to paper and begun the process to deliver cleaner air for the Balmain Peninsula and set White Bay Cruise Terminal up for a sustainable future.”

Port Authority NSW CEO Philip Holliday said:

“Port Authority is focused on progressing the Shore Power project to our revised delivery date and creating a world-class, integrated, sustainable port of the future that supports our economy, the community and the NSW Government’s vision for the area.”

Where Does the Cruise Ship Dock in Sydney?

By Robert Palmer

sydney cruise ship berths

Sydney is one of the most popular cruise ship destinations in Oceania, and it’s not hard to see why. From the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge to the beautiful beaches, there is so much to see and do in this vibrant city. Cruise ships dock at various ports around the city, giving passengers a chance to explore and experience all that Sydney has to offer.

The most common port for cruise ships is Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT), located in Circular Quay. This is the terminal used by all major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises and more. The OPT can accommodate up to four large vessels at once, making it an ideal port for large-scale cruises.

White Bay Cruise Terminal (WBCT) is another popular port in Sydney. Located on the western side of the city in Balmain East, WBCT is primarily used by P&O Cruises Australia vessels. It can accommodate up to two large ships at once and offers a range of services for travellers, including shuttle buses and car parking.

For those looking for a more intimate experience, Port Jackson (also known as Darling Harbour) may be the perfect fit. This port mainly caters to smaller vessels such as luxury yachts or sailing boats. It’s also close to many attractions such as SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and Madame Tussauds Sydney.

Finally , there is Garden Island Naval Base located on Garden Island near Potts Point. This naval base has been used by various cruise lines over the years but is mainly reserved for military use today. However, some small vessels do occasionally dock here.

The choice of where your cruise ship docks in Sydney will depend on its size and type of vessel. But no matter which port you choose, you are sure to have an unforgettable time exploring this beautiful city!

Cruising to Sydney – everything you need to know

Sydney is one of the world’s great harbour cities and an essential stop for any cruise to Australia. Whether arriving or departing, you’ll cruise past the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge and through the dramatic sandstone cliffs of The Heads at the entrance to the Pacific Ocean.

A key cruise destination

Sydney offers a spectacular blend of art, culture, dining, events, outdoor activities and grand colonial architecture. It’s the ideal destination to start or finish your cruise, and it’s compact enough to explore on a day in port. It’s also the only Australian city to have two dedicated cruise terminals – the Overseas Passenger Terminal and White Bay Cruise Terminal. View the  cruise schedule  for more information on domestic and international cruises to and from Sydney.

Overseas Passenger Terminal

Located at Circular Quay in the heart of Sydney, the Overseas Passenger Terminal has uninterrupted views of Sydney Harbour and the city. It’s beside the historic Rocks neighbourhood , with its cobbled laneways, artisan markets and some of the oldest pubs in Australia. Just outside your cabin door, find attractions like zoos, aquariums, restaurants, bars, theatres and world-class shopping.

The terminal can accommodate some of the largest cruise ships in the world. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to Circular Quay station for trains, buses and ferries. Taxis and cars can also drop off or pick up passengers right in front of the terminal. Parking is not permitted in the terminal precinct, however passengers may be set down or picked up.

To get from Sydney Airport to the Overseas Passenger Terminal you can take the train to Circular Quay (17 minutes) or catch a taxi, which takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic.

White Bay Cruise Terminal

White Bay Cruise Terminal sits further into the harbour in the suburb of Rozelle, so passengers will have the thrill of sailing right under the Sydney Harbour Bridge . It’s close to the Balmain area, a trendy neighbourhood with relaxed pubs, top restaurants and boutique stores. The  Sydney Lyric Theatre  and  The Star Sydney  are also nearby.

White Bay is mostly used by smaller ships and many of Sydney’s home-ported ships are based here. The terminal is only five minutes by car or taxi to the city and there are large car parks for passengers embarking. Most cruise lines offer the option to book transfers from Sydney Airport to White Bay Cruise Terminal or to and from Central Station.

Customs and immigration

If you’re departing on a domestic cruise you’ll need to complete a health questionnaire, while international cruise passengers must complete a health questionnaire as well as an outbound passenger card. Both documents are available inside the terminal upon arrival.

Bring a passport with at least six months’ validity for international voyages and a government-issued photo ID for domestic trips. Your booking itinerary is required for all cruises. Most cruise ships will not allow you to board with alcohol. You can surrender the alcohol and collect it at the trip’s end.

Almost every Carnival cruise ship will sail to its upcoming private resort soon — see what it'll be like in Celebration Key

Carnival Cruise Line's new $600 million private port, Celebration Key , is set to open in July 2025.

Most of Carnival's ships will sail to the resort-like destination.

Cruise line-run private islands have been big moneymakers for companies like Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

One of Carnival's upcoming $600 million projects has the potential to become a massive money tree for the popular cruise line .

No, it's not a new ship. It's a mile-long slice of beachfront land on Grand Bahama island , which the company is turning into its own private tropical destination.

Beginning July 2025, Carnival says this slice of the Bahamas — dubbed Celebration Key — will entice visiting cruisers with resort-like amenities, waterslides, and 30 food and drink venues.

From its launch in 2025 through 2026, 20 of Carnival's 27 ships are scheduled to sail to Celebration Key.

The cheapest starts at about $335 per person for a three-day Carnival Glory cruise from Florida's Port Canaveral .

The private port would have five distinct sections: a lagoon for families, two adult-friendly lounges, a welcome area, and a shopping center.

The former, Starfish Lagoon, would be outfitted with kid-friendly activities like two 350-foot-long racing waterslides, a water playground, foosball, basketball, and volleyball.

Travelers who prefer saltwater over the lagoon's freshwater can head to Starfish's designated beach instead.

Looking ahead, Carnival also plans to build an on-site waterpark.

Peckish families could dine on a seafood feast at Gill's Grill.

Or, they could take a break from the sun at the five-stall food hall, which would offer grab-and-go options like hot dogs, tacos, and pizza.

Adults who need a break from rowdy kids can expect their own up-charged slice of Celebration Key.

The adult-only retreat, called Pearl Cove Beach Club, is expected to have an 11,000-square-foot infinity pool with a DJ, water lounges, and a swim-up bar.

Not a fan of the pool? Pearl Cove would also have a private beach (it is a beach club, after all).

However, entry to the adult getaway would be ticketed.

Grown-ups who don't want to pay can instead lounge at Calypso Lagoon, another adult-friendly beach and lagoon.

Some of Calypso Lagoon's amenities would echo Pearl Cove, including its numerous bar options (including one with above-water swinging seats), two restaurants, and a designated beach.

It wouldn't be a cruise line-owned private destination without plenty of opportunities to splurge.

Guests at Celebration Key could rent villas, daybeds, and cabanas (including some that float in Starfish Lagoon).

Or, they could treat themselves to some retail therapy at the port's shopping center, Lokono Cove.

Celebration Key isn't the cruise line's only land-based venture.

It also owns the smaller Half Moon Cay , a resort-like private Bahamian island frequented by its sister cruise company Holland America.

Carnival said it intends further to develop Half Moon Cay with an extended beach, more dining options, and a pier that will accommodate the cruise line's largest ships.

There’s a good reason the cruise giant is going all-in on its land-based portfolio.

Private islands can be cash cows for popular cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean .

Guests can spend big on these exclusive destinations' excursions and private lounges, boosting the cruise line's profits.

And in the case of Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key, these stops are near Florida's major cruise ports, decreasing visiting ships' travel times and fuel costs.

For some operators, these exclusive ports are also becoming a necessity.

An increasing number of cities worldwide have been restricting cruise ship access. In other cases, several of the industry's new mega-ships have outgrown some ports.

Cruise lines can just turn to their in-house destinations to recoup these lost ports — outfitted with up-charged amenities like waterparks and desirable beachfront villas.

Carnival said Celebration Key would bring 2.2 million guests to Grand Bahama.

When two additional berths are built in 2028, the number of visiting guests would grow to 4 million a year.

The $600 million project is set to be Carnival Corp's largest. Despite the hefty investment, Carnival Corp's CFO, David Bernstein, told analysts on Monday that the company is already predicting Celebration Key will be a "smash hit and provide an excellent return on investment. "
